Investment management firm State Street says that institutional clients are not deterred from investing in crypto assets despite price declines. “There is a belief that the asset class is here to stay,” a State Street executive said.
State Street on Institutional Demand for Crypto
State Street, a leading investment management firm, sees unwaning institutional demand for cryptocurrency despite market sell-offs, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Monday.
Irfan Ahmad, State Street Digital’s product lead for the Asia-Pacific region, said the banking giant’s institutional clients are still keen on crypto and its underlying technology. He was quoted as saying:
During the course of the June, July period where things were really hotting up in terms of activity, we saw institutional clients not necessarily double down, but they weren’t really deterred from placing strategic bets on the asset class itself.
“The takeaway from that is, I think, there is a belief that the asset class is here to stay,” the executive emphasized.
State Street (NYSE: STT) operates in more than 100 geographic markets globally and employs approximately 40,000 worldwide. The financial services giant had $38.2 trillion in assets under custody and/or administration and $3.5 trillion in assets under management as of June 30.
The company’s digital arm, State Street Digital, provides solutions for a range of digital assets, including cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, digital cash, and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), according to its website.
Ahmad noted that a number of major investment firms, such as Goldman Sachs, have begun offering crypto products and are likely to make further moves into the crypto space. In April, Goldman Sachs offered its first bitcoin-backed loan.
The world’s largest asset manager, Blackrock, launched a spot bitcoin private trust in August. “Despite the steep downturn in the digital asset market, we are still seeing substantial interest from some institutional clients,” the firm said.
The State Street executive further shared that institutional clients have inquired about launching crypto products, elaborating:
Certainly, our clients, they’ve been speaking to us more pragmatically about how they might be able to launch products, or what our capabilities may be in the future to help them support the launch of those products.
In July last year, State Street announced the expansion of its cryptocurrency service, citing soaring demand from traditional funds.
Crypto exchanges are also seeing rising demand from institutional investors. The CEO of Bitstamp said in August that his trading platform is seeing “massive crypto interest” from institutional clients. In June, Binance launched a new platform for VIP and institutional crypto investors to increase support for institutional clients.

Today, senior government officials from the United States and Mexico met in Mexico City to convene the U.S.-Mexico High-Level Economic Dialogue (HLED). Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo, Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Jayme White, and Ambassador Ken Salazar chaired the meeting for the United States. Secretary of Economy Tatiana Clouthier, Secretary of Foreign Relations Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Finance and Public Credit Rogelio Ramírez, and Ambassador Esteban Moctezuma chaired the meeting for Mexico.
Since relaunching the HLED a year ago, the United States and Mexico have furthered cooperation and commitment to our regional economic growth, integration, and longstanding strategic partnership. The United States and Mexico recognize that we are stronger when we address challenges and seize opportunities together to make North America more resilient, competitive, diverse, and secure. The HLED provides a flexible, goal-oriented platform to foster regional prosperity, expand job creation, invest in our people, and reduce inequality and poverty.
As our presidents stated at their meeting in July, North America is an economic powerhouse. Regional economic strength has enabled total trade between the United States and Mexico to surpass pre-pandemic levels. The HLED builds on this dynamic and flourishing economic relationship with specific projects to strengthen North American supply chains and regional competitiveness. Our shared vision and planned scope of work set a collaborative path to address the climate crisis, the global pandemic, and enduring inequality.
Building on the work of the last year, the HLED continues to focus on four central pillars:
Building Back Together;
Promoting Sustainable Economic and Social Development in Southern Mexico and Central America;
Securing the Tools for Future Prosperity; and
Investing in Our People.
Today we reviewed accomplishments under the HLED and discussed new areas for collaboration, such as partnering to address climate change challenges to meet our commitments under the UN’s 2030 agenda and greening transportation at the border to improve air quality and public health. We also discussed collaboration on electromobility, digital economy, workforce development, and supply chain resilience in sectors such as pharmaceuticals, where Mexico’s Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks is working to optimize the regulatory environment.
The passage of the CHIPS and Science Act in the United States provides unprecedented opportunities to enhance our already dynamic supply chains. Likewise, the Inflation Reduction Act – the most significant climate legislation in U.S. history – includes $369 billion to curb emissions and spur demand for electric vehicles and clean energy technologies. These laws will increase investment into the North American manufacturing sector, lower energy costs for families and businesses, bolster our supply chains, and shore up our collective energy security. It will also create jobs in both countries and position North America as a leader in clean energy.
To Build Back Together, the United States and Mexico will work to improve the regional business climate and strengthen the resilience of U.S.-Mexico supply chains. Last year’s HLED launched the U.S.-Mexico Supply Chains Working Group to assess supply chain needs to attract investment and reduce vulnerabilities to disruptions in critical sectors, such as semiconductors and information and communication technologies (ICT).
Both countries committed to work with our private sectors to identify locations with the right skillsets, infrastructure, and industrial capabilities for greater investment in the semiconductor and ICT ecosystem. We will work together to pursue a pilot project to determine the feasibility of near-shoring semiconductor manufacturing inputs to reduce the risk of future supply chain disruptions and also support the further integration of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) into these supply chains.
We will address climate change by accelerating the transition to clean energy, especially through the adoption of zero-emission vehicles. Federal agencies in the United States and Mexico are working with state and municipal governments, the private sector, and civil society organizations to develop green spaces and sustainable economic development zones to benefit sister communities across our shared border. Doing so not only helps us keep within reach our goal of limiting warming to 1.5°C, but also improves public health and agricultural productivity.
Later this year, the United States and Mexico will celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations. Our long-standing familial, cultural, and business ties propel us to explore new ways to facilitate legitimate trade and travel along our shared border through infrastructure modernization, partnerships with private sector stakeholders, and trade facilitation programs. Our countries remain committed to completing a multi-year joint U.S.-Mexico border infrastructure modernization effort for projects along the nearly 2,000-mile border, leveraging the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the $1.5 billion commitment from the Government of Mexico to strengthen infrastructure, unite border communities, and make the two-way flow of commerce and people more secure and efficient.
To Promote Sustainable Economic Development in southern Mexico and Central America, the United States and Mexico cooperate to improve the regional business environment and livelihoods through the creation of jobs and opportunities in El Salvador, Honduras, Guatemala, and southern Mexico. Our federal governments, in partnership with regional leaders from the private sector, have organized five joint meetings with Mexican southern state governors to promote public-private cooperation to advance investment opportunities, economic development, and environmental and climate goals.
In December 2021, our two development agencies launched a new collaborative framework called “Sowing Opportunities” (Sembrando Oportunidades) to increase technical cooperation and address the root causes of irregular migration in northern Central America. The U.S. Agency for International Development has launched a new economic development project called Southern Mexico Generating Employment and Sustainability (SURGES) to mobilize private sector investments and strengthen the capacity of rural communities and small farmers to take advantage of market opportunities and integrate them into existing regional supply chains.
To Secure the Tools for Future Economic Prosperity, the United States and Mexico are working towards supporting regulatory compatibility and risk mitigation on information and communications technology (ICT), cybersecurity, telecommunications, and infrastructure issues. Through mechanisms including the U.S.-Mexico Working Group on Cyber Issues, both governments coordinate to strengthen our cybersecurity protections in global supply chains and tackle cybersecurity challenges through international industry best practices and standards, and continue cooperating on ICT infrastructure deployment, including 5G networks.
To Invest in Our People, both governments promote initiatives that expand collaboration on technical education and training, invest in entrepreneurs, support small and medium-sized enterprises, and enhance access to economic opportunities for women, youth, indigenous persons, and members of the LGBTQI+ community. High-tech manufacturing in North America relies on a highly skilled workforce and a robust ecosystem to promote high-tech entrepreneurship. Labor and education authorities from both countries will share best practices on apprenticeship programs and vocational and technical education in October.
Our collaboration to enhance technical education and create English-language certifications will prepare students to work in high-tech manufacturing, a key factor in attracting greater investment as we seek to near-shore manufacturing inputs. This work includes implementing programs for women entrepreneurs and coordinating with Small Business Development Centers to expand their professional networks in southern Mexico. We are investing in our entrepreneurs and SMEs by launching a public awareness campaign to support innovation and creativity and reduce counterfeit goods and pirated content from supply chains.
The United States and Mexico remain committed to building a more inclusive workforce that recognizes that all our citizens should benefit from our economic growth. To that end, we are working together to promote responsible business practices, implement obligations under international labor conventions, cooperate to eradicate the use of forced labor in our supply chains, and expand temporary worker programs with strong labor protections. Doing so will help us make progress on the commitments we made with partners to promote transparency, diversification, security, and sustainability in global supply chains in the July 2022 Joint Statement on Cooperation on Global Supply Chains.
We welcome and rely on stakeholder input to define and implement HLED initiatives. We affirm our commitment to continued stakeholder engagement with the private sector, academia, and civil society and look forward to expanding our engagement with state-level representatives.

The last of dozens of executive orders issued by Gov. Jay Inslee due to the COVID-19 pandemic will end by November, the governor announced last week.
During a Sept. 8 press conference, Inslee announced Washington’s state of emergency regarding the pandemic will end on Oct. 31. As of the announcement, three quarters of Inslee’s executive orders had already ended, with the last 10 set to be lifted at the end of next month, according to a governor’s office release.
Washington was the first state in the U.S. to report a COVID-19 case in January of 2020. In February, Inslee announced the state of emergency, which was among the 85 executive orders issued during the course of the pandemic.
“We’ve come a long way the past two years in developing the tools that allow us to adapt and live with COVID-19,” Inslee stated in the release. “Ending this order does not mean we take it less seriously or will lose focus on how this virus has changed the way we live. We will continue our commitments to the public’s well-being, but simply through different tools that are now more appropriate for the era we’ve entered.”
Washington State Secretary of Health Umair Shah said the removal of the orders “marks an important transition for the state” but doesn’t mean COVID-19 is no longer a worry.
After October, the requirement for facial coverings in health care and correctional facilities under certain circumstances will remain. Most state agencies will continue to require COVID-19 vaccinations for its employees, though the requirement will be lifted for workers in education and health care. Employers may keep the requirement if they choose.
Following Inslee’s announcement
of the end of the orders, local lawmakers responded that although welcome, the removal of the state of emergency could have come sooner.
State Sen. Lynda Wilson, R-Vancouver, said the current emergency powers law was 50 years old and didn’t take into account the ability of legislators to make decisions remotely. In a statement, Wilson said Senate Republicans proposed “sensible reforms” as the state of emergency was in effect that would have put a check on executive orders that went beyond 30 days.
“The governor showed no interest in our ideas, nor did his allies in the current legislative majority, and I heard nothing from him today to suggest a change of heart,” Wilson said.
Wilson said Washington families deserve better than what they got from Inslee’s executive actions, which shut out them and their representatives in the process of responding to the pandemic.
“I’m glad the state of emergency will be over, but it will be critical for the Legislature to reflect on the errors that were made and take steps to make sure our laws are ready for the next emergency,” Wilson said.
State Senate Republican Leader John Braun, of Centralia, said the orders were justified at the pandemic’s onset given the limited information about the novel coronavirus.
“Unfortunately, there came a point when Governor Inslee began drifting away from the data and toward other metrics that seemed more political than scientific,” Braun said.
After questioning from Republicans throughout the pandemic, Braun felt Inslee’s excuses dried up, which led to the recent announcement of the orders’ end.
“(F)rom that standpoint I welcome today’s announcement,” Braun said.

The gay rights organisation LGB Alliance was set up to “promote transphobic activity rather than pro-LGB activities”, the head of Consortium, an umbrella group of LGBT organisations told a court on Monday.
In the first full day of hearings in the appeal by the transgender rights charity Mermaids against the Charity Commission’s decision to award charitable status to LGB Alliance, Paul Roberts, the chief executive of Consortium, said that LGB Alliance was created to pursue an anti-trans agenda.
In cross-examination, Akua Reindorf QC, for LGB Alliance, repeatedly questioned whether the label transphobic was merited, arguing there were areas where the rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people might not be aligned with the rights of trans people, justifying the creation of a separate charitable organisation.
The day’s hearing at the General Regulatory Chamber explored the line between transphobia and campaigning for the separate rights of lesbian, gay and bisexual people.
Questions focused on several contested areas of LGBTQ+ rights. At the start of the hearing there was a discussion of the changing definition of sexual orientation. The definition given by the country’s largest LGBTQ+ organisation, Stonewall, has shifted in the past decade from “same-sex attracted” to “same-gender attracted”; LGB Alliance says it was founded to stand up for the rights of same-sex attracted people.
Reindorf asked Roberts: “Do you think it is transphobic to say a person with a female body cannot be a gay man.” Roberts replied: “Yes.”
Reindorf asked if being attracted to people of the same gender was “a qualitatively different thing” to being attracted to people of the same sex. “I don’t believe we live in such a clearcut, binary way,” Roberts replied.
Reindorf also highlighted concerns raised by LGB Alliance that some children who have been referred to gender identity services might otherwise have gone on to be gay, but were offered puberty blockers as treatment for gender dysphoria.
She cited media interviews with Tavistock gender clinic staff warning that possible same-sex attraction was being ignored and noted that some clinicians had said sending children who may be gay down the pathway to change gender felt like “conversion therapy”.
Roberts said there were “elements of transphobia” in that position.
Roberts was asked about questions raised in the Hilary Cass review of gender identity services for children and young people over the 4,400% rise in the number of young girls, a disproportionately high percentage of whom were same-sex attracted, being referred to the service.
“There seems to be an extraordinary sudden rise in same-sex attracted girls identifying as male and seeking a medical pathway. If this is happening, then is it not properly a matter of great concern to an organisation which promotes LGBT rights?” Reindorf asked. Roberts said he was not an expert in this area, but added that in his daily work he saw “many young trans people and many trans adults living healthy lives, and this would not reflect their experiences”.
Roberts was also asked to address the question of whether lesbians should be refused membership of lesbian dating sites if they stated they would refuse to date trans women and to state whether he agreed with comments made by Nancy Kelley, the chief executive of Stonewall, that not wanting to date trans people was “sexual racism”.
He said no one should be coerced to have sex with someone against their will.
In 2020 Consortium refused to admit LGB Alliance to its umbrella group of organisations, of which Mermaids is a member. In skeleton arguments released on Monday, Mermaids said it would argue that LGB Alliance was “not tackling problems facing lesbian, gay and bisexual people, but rather is seeking to prevent the resolution of problems facing transgender persons”.
In its skeleton arguments LGB Alliance said the appeal was ideologically motivated, arising from a “profound disagreement with LGB Alliance’s approach to the promotion and protection of LGB rights”.
It is understood to be the first time one charity has attempted to remove legal status from another. The hearing will continue until Friday.

Roblox Inc. is recognized as being one of the leaders working to create the so-called “metaverse,” but one analyst thinks even the social-gaming platform will get overwhelmed by the competition.
“While we think the development of the metaverse represents an enormously important technology, we also think realization of the metaverse could be at least 10 years away,” Cowen analyst Doug Creutz, who just started coverage of Roblox RBLX, , said in a Monday note, entitled “Roblox and the metaverse: With the (virtual) universe at stake, competition will be intense.”
“Current tech incumbents and content owners are very aware of the potential power of the metaverse, and therefore Roblox is likely to face extremely determined competition,” he said.
Creutz noted that the term “metaverse” is borrowed from Neal Stephenson’s 1992 science-fiction novel “Snow Crash,” which follows the hacker/pizza-delivery guy protagonist literally named “Hiro Protagonist.”
“In the lingo, this imaginary place is known as the Metaverse,” the novel reads. “Hiro spends a lot of time in the Metaverse.”
Creutz said people are also thinking of “The Matrix” as a template for contemplating what the metaverse will be like.
“In 1999, a Warner Bros. marketing campaign asked audiences ‘What is The Matrix?’” Creutz said. “Here, we propose to at least try to answer the question ‘What is the metaverse?’ since Roblox has made its intention clear to be a major player in this emerging junction of technology and media.”
It’s here where Creutz describes why he refuses to capitalize the “m” in metaverse: “In this note we decline to capitalize the term ‘metaverse’ except as it refers to specific uses in other media, since we are referring to a still-indefinite concept as opposed to an actual destination that merits the use of a proper noun, like the Internet.) “

Creutz uses that quote in his note in explaining how Roblox will fare in the metaverse.
“Is it a red pill/blue pill situation in believing in forecasting Roblox dominance in the still science fiction ‘metaverse?’” Creutz said.
While Roblox has big plans for the metaverse, Creutz believes that the metaverse “will be much bigger than what Roblox can possibly hope to provide, given the technical requirements and need for diverse and compelling content.”
“As a destination in the metaverse, Roblox will face competition from many companies that are simply much better equipped in terms of technology and capital, and which perhaps more importantly have demonstrated an overwhelming will to power during Web2.”
It seems that people have different ideas about what the metaverse will be like, but it is still imaginary, so how do people imagine something that doesn’t exist yet? Creutz said people likely will use science-fiction movies and books to get their ideas.
Creutz also cited the movie “Tron,” William Gibson’s “Neuromancer” and Ernst Cline’s “Ready Player One” as also being big influences for how people imagine how the metaverse will be.
“Most everything that companies like Roblox and Meta are talking about today was imagined on a page or screen as much as 40 years ago (if not earlier),” the Cowen analyst said. Creutz said that while many people think of Roblox as a template for the virtual world, he disagrees.
“We believe the current entertainment experience that is closest in spirit to a real metaverse is not Roblox, but [Take Two’s] ‘Grand Theft Auto Online,’” he said.
“Even if we are wrong, however, and the metaverse arrives sooner than we expect, we are skeptical that Roblox will find dominance and profitability therein,” Creutz said. “Unlike social media and search, where existing tech incumbents failed to recognize the importance of the emerging platforms and allowed upstarts (Facebook and Google) to grow rapidly and profitably until it was too late, the focus on metaverse development is intense and widespread. As a result, we think success in the metaverse will be in the context of a highly competitive market, with no chance to catch incumbents unawares. We see plenty of other companies with more significant financial and content resources as positioned to be powerful metaverse players, including (but not limited to) Sony 6758, , Take-Two TTWO, , Microsoft MSFT, , [Alphabet Inc.’s GOOGL, GOOG, ] Google, Apple AAPL, , Meta META, and Epic Games.”
In August, Roblox shares took a hit after the company reported a surprise decline in bookings, their second year-over-year quarterly decline in a row, but executives were quick to note that July booking had risen.
The company defines bookings as “revenue plus the change in deferred revenue during the period and other noncash adjustments.” The importance of bookings comes into play as the company sells virtual currency on its site that may be considered deferred revenue.
Back in May, Roblox shares also came under heavy fire after the company reported an unexpected decline in bookings, resulting in Roblox stock logging its worst one-day performance since it went public. The company dropped more than a quarter of its value in one trading session, following lighter-than-expected results as once-stuck-inside kids were finding other ways to spend their time as pandemic restrictions eased.
Roblox went public through a direct listing in March 2021, and was a darling stock as recently as last November, when the company said in an earnings report that a three-day outage over Halloween weekend did not fail to stop October growth. But, as restrictions eased, children put down their tablets and ran outside to play as evidenced in Roblox’s results in February.
Of the 23 analysts who cover Roblox, 12 have buy-grade ratings, eight have hold ratings, and three have sell-grade ratings, with an average target price of $45.44. Back in June 2021, all eight analysts covering Roblox had buy-grade ratings, which it enjoyed for six quarters, according to FactSet data.

Sell LUNA, Buy TAMA?
Retail investors tend to buy the top of bull cycles by FOMO’ing into green candles – by the time Terra (LUNA) and Terra Classic (LUNC) had made mainstream headlines for their explosive run ups in the past weeks, the top was in.
One positive for Terra bulls is that the LUNA price has bounced from the daily EMA 8 at $4 as shown on the Terra price chart above.

Futures in the Asia-Pacific were mixed on Tuesday as investors looked ahead to the U.S. inflation report for the month of August.
The Nikkei futures contract in Chicago was at 28,390 while its counterpart in Osaka was at 28,360. That’s lower than the Nikkei 225’s last close at 28,542.11.
In Australia, SPI futures were at 7,000, higher compared with the S&P/ASX 200‘s last close at 6,964.50.
Mainland China, Hong Kong and South Korea markets will resume trading after a holiday.
Overnight in the U.S., the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 229.63 points, or 0.71%, to end at 32,381.34. The S&P 500 gained 1.06% to 4,110.41, and the Nasdaq Composite increased 1.27% to 12,266.41.
Headline inflation in the U.S. is expected to decline in August, according to a Dow Jones survey. But core inflation, excluding energy and food, is projected to rise. Headline CPI is expected to come in at 8%, compared with 8.5% in July.

1. Blue Origin booster suffers fiery anomaly during launch
An uncrewed flight of Blue Origin’s New Shepard suborbital rocket ended in failure shortly after lift-off on Monday morning from Launch Site One in West Texas. The capsule, packed with scientific and technological payloads, managed to survive an apparent booster malfunction, with the launch escape system successfully working as designed. The booster anomaly happened just over one minute after the rocket launched.

2. Instagrammers aren’t using Reels
Instagram looks a lot more like TikTok as of late, but that radical metamorphosis and new focus on short-form video hasn’t translated into TikTok’s ludicrous viewership numbers. In news surprising no one, a leaked report apparently said that Instagram users are not spending much time watching these short-form videos, and even worse, “most Reels users have no engagement whatsoever”.
3. Humans and cockatoos locked in an ‘arms race’ over rubbish
Man and bird are waging a fierce battle over the most precious of resources: garbage. Over the past several years, a team of scientists has studied sulphur-crested cockatoo parrots in the area that have learned — and even taught other parrots — how to rob garbage bins around Sydney. Humans have now started to devise their own methods to keep the birds out, to varying degrees of success. There’s science involved, we promise, read more about it here.

4. Climate Council’s 10 steps to beat emissions reduction target
The federal government’s climate target is now enshrined in law, meaning that by 2030, Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions need to be 43 per cent lower than they were in 2005. A new ‘plug-and-play’ roadmap from the Climate Council has now asked the government to do 10 things in order to reach this target. As the ABC is reporting, this includes moving to 100 per cent renewable grid supply.
5. iOS 16 is here
Apple first announced iOS 16 back in June at its annual WWDC developer conference. Some features of the new software include the ability to unsend or edit texts sent via iMessage, (almost) complete Lock Screen customisation, Family sharing (think parental controls), the ability to share photo galleries with family and friends and makeovers to a few existing apps/features/settings. We’ve been using the Beta if you want to know what to try first. It’s available today.

Debates about debates between candidates running for office are tedious, as barbs are traded over the number of matchups, the timing, the ground rules. But the one being played out in Pennsylvania between Lt. Gov. John Fetterman (D) and his Republican opponent in the race for U.S. Senate, Mehmet Oz, is worthy of attention. The race might well determine which party controls the Senate, and voters would benefit from seeing the two candidates exchange ideas and test each other. Mr. Fetterman has seemingly been reluctant to commit to firm debate dates, and that troubling stance has raised questions about whether he, still recovering from a serious stroke, is fit to serve in the Senate.
After suffering a stroke in May, Mr. Fetterman was off the campaign trail for three months and has campaigned little since then; he held a rally Sunday. Mr. Oz has pressed for five debates, but Mr. Fetterman dodged and ducked before tentatively agreeing last week to one but not until “sometime in the middle to end of October.” That’s well after Sept. 19, when voters can start casting mail-in ballots, and it’s short of the two debates that had been the standard during recent competitive Senate contests in Pennsylvania.
Since returning to the campaign trail, Mr. Fetterman has been halting in his performances. He stammers, appears confused and keeps his remarks short. He has held no news conferences. Mr. Fetterman acknowledges his difficulties with auditory processing, which make it hard for him to respond quickly to what he’s hearing. He receives speech therapy — and we wish him a speedy, full recovery — but the lingering, unanswered questions about his health, underscored by his hesitation to debate, are unsettling.
The Fetterman campaign squandered credibility by concealing from the public for two days after his stroke that he had been hospitalized. It waited weeks longer to reveal a more complete picture of his medical history, including that he had been diagnosed in 2017 with cardiomyopathy. Mr. Fetterman had a pacemaker with a defibrillator implanted after the stroke. The campaign’s response to questions about Mr. Fetterman’s health is to point to a doctor’s note, released more than 14 weeks ago, which said “he should be able to campaign and serve in the U.S. Senate without a problem” if he takes his medications and exercises.
That’s not good enough. Mr. Fetterman is asking voters for a six-year contract without giving them enough information to make sound judgments about whether he’s up for such a demanding job. We have called for full disclosure of health records from candidates for federal office in both parties, including Donald Trump and Joe Biden, and we believe Mr. Fetterman should release his medical records for independent review.
And he should debate Mr. Oz before voters start casting their ballots. Mr. Oz, for his part, has not exactly conducted himself with glory. The campaign’s offer to fund “any additional medical personnel [Mr. Fetterman] might need to have on standby” during a debate and its mocking comment about Mr. Fetterman not eating enough vegetables were sophomoric and unseemly, made worse by the fact that Mr. Oz is a cardiothoracic surgeon. Both candidates have something to prove to voters, and there is no better forum than a debate.

The U.S. Army Medical Materiel Development Activity (USAMMDA) showcases the prototype of the interior of the Army’s only Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Ambulance and other technologies designed to improve automation, compliance, efficiency and data analytics at this week’s Military Health System Research Symposium in Kissimmee, Florida, today through Thursday.
During the symposium, officials say the products demonstrate the current levels of care a Service Member receives as well as the future of Role 1-3 care, and tools to improve hospital planning and data systems management. Other technologies on display include the Health Readiness and Performance System and the Canine Thermal Model System, wearable devices to monitor the physiological condition of both troops and military working dogs.

President Joe Biden will not be bringing his predecessor — or any other former president — to accompany him when he travels to London for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the White House has said.
In response to a question on whether Mr Biden would invite Donald Trump or any of the three other living ex-presidents to join an official delegation to the late sovereign’s memorial service, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that the official invitation from His Majesty’s Government was extended only to the incumbent president and his spouse, First Lady Jill Biden.
Ms Jean-Pierre said the invitation was transmitted on Saturday as a diplomatic note from the protocol directorate of the UK foreign and commonwealth office, with Mr Biden accepting it a day later.
“The invitation was extended to the US government for the President and the First Lady only,” she said.
Foreign heads of state and their partners have been asked to arrive in the UK on commercial flights and have been told there will be no use of helicopters allowed to move them around London.
They have also been told that they will not be allowed to use official cars to attend the funeral on Monday 19 September but will instead be bussed to Westminster Abbey from a site in west London, according to Politico.
The late Queen’s seven decades on the throne spanned the terms of 14 US presidents, from the 33th — Harry S Truman — to Mr Biden, the 46th. Of those 14, the only one she did not meet in person was the 36th, Lyndon Johnson.
Following the announcement of the Queen’s death, Mr Trump, who was invited for a state visit to the UK in 2019, took to Truth Social to praise her “generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor”, adding that she was a “beautiful lady”.
“Melania and I are deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Together with our family and fellow Americans, we send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom during this time of great sorrow and grief,” he wrote.
The former president continued: “Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty’s generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!”
The former president visited the UK on three occasions during his time in office. In July 2018 he met with the Queen and Prime Minister Theresa May, returning in June of the following year for an official state visit and the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
In December 2019 he returned for a Nato summit and again met with the Queen.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks climbed again Monday, as Wall Street made its final moves ahead of a high-stakes report that will hopefully show inflation hammered the economy less hard last month.
The S&P 500 rose 43.05, or 1.1%, to 4,110.41 for its fourth straight gain. That’s its longest winning streak since July, in the early days of the market’s bounce back from its battering earlier in the year.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 229.63, or 0.7%, to 32,381.34, and the Nasdaq composite rallied 154.10, or 1.3%, to 12,266.41.
The nation’s punishingly high inflation, and the steps the Federal Reserve is taking to combat it, have been the driving forces on Wall Street all year. Economists expect a report on Tuesday to show that prices for consumers were 8.1% higher in August than a year earlier, but that inflation was not as bad as July’s 8.5% rate.
A slowdown would bolster hopes that inflation topped out in June at 9.1% and is on its way back down. That in turn could allow the Federal Reserve to avoid a worst-case scenario for markets, where it jacks short-term interest rates up to recession-causing levels and holds them there a long time.
“This week is going to be very telling,” said James Demmert, founder and managing partner at Main Street Research.
Beyond Tuesday’s headliner report on inflation at the consumer level, a report on Wednesday is expected to show inflation slowed at the wholesale level last month. A report the following day will show how U.S. households have altered their spending amid high inflation, while a Friday report will show how much inflation households are preparing for in upcoming years.
They’re all crucial data points for the Federal Reserve as it mulls how much to raise interest rates at its meeting next week. Fed officials have loudly reaffirmed recently their plans to raise rates enough to slow the economy, plus their commitment to keeping rates high for long enough to ensure the job is done on inflation.
But with Tuesday’s report possibly continuing a trend, many investors and economists are hopeful that inflation could return to more “normal” levels quickly, unlike the 1970s, when it took many years.
Jonathan Golub, chief U.S. equity strategist at Credit Suisse, wrote in a report that investors and economists expect inflation to collapse within the next 12 to 18 months.
Markets are fairly convinced the Fed will hike its key short-term interest rate by a hefty 0.75 percentage points next week for the third straight meeting. But the hope is that an easing of inflation will allow the Federal Reserve to successfully tiptoe the narrow pathway for a “soft landing” of the economy.
That’s where higher rates slow the economy enough to halt inflation but not so much as to cause a scarring recession. Higher rates hurt the economy by making it more expensive to buy a house, a car or anything else bought on credit. They also push down on prices for stocks, bonds and other investments.
Many traders are forecasting the Fed will begin downshifting the size of its rate increases after next week through the end of the year, before potentially keeping rates steady through the first half of 2023.
Of course, such hopes could also be setting Wall Street up for disappointment. The economy has given head fakes on inflation before, with hopes percolating that a peak has passed only to begin accelerating again.
Demmert said the broader market is looking for inflation to not just peak, but to start cooling meaningfully. He said the strong hopes for Tuesday’s inflation report are likely “not going to be healthy for stocks.”
Wall Street economists are still split on whether the U.S. economy will fall into a recession next year because of higher interest rates and other factors.
The Fed has already raised short-term rates four times this year, and its aggressive moves have helped the value of the U.S. dollar soar against many other foreign currencies.
A strong dollar helps to limit inflation at home by pushing down on prices for commodities and imports, but it can also hurt profits for U.S. companies that have a lot of sales coming from overseas. The dollar gave up some of its gains on Monday after slipping against the euro, British pound and several others.
Treasury yields were mixed. The 10-year Treasury yield, which helps control where mortgages and rates for other loans are heading, is back at 3.34%, close to its highest level in more than a decade.
The two-year yield, which tends to track expectations for Fed action, held steady at 3.56%. It remains close to its highest level since before the 2008 financial crisis.
In the stock market, the vast majority of stocks rallied. Energy producers were close to the top of the leaderboard, benefiting from climbing oil prices.
Bristol-Myers Squibb gained 3.1% for one of the biggest gains in the S&P 500 after federal regulators approved its treatment for adults with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, a time to recognize the impact that falls have on the lives of millions of Americans each year and take steps to prevent falls.
The U.S. CDC reports that each year one in four adults over the age of 65 experiences a fall. Additionally, the National Council on Aging reports that an older adult is seen in an emergency room every 11 seconds due to a fall-related injury.
“Healthy Living for ME is actively making a difference for Mainers who are at risk for falls. Through workshops and resource connections, network partners throughout the state are helping Mainers reduce their risk of falls and improve their quality of life,” said Jennifer Fortin, training & fidelity manager of Healthy Living for ME. “During this Falls Prevention Awareness Month, we encourage Mainers to assess their own risk for falls and have conversations about preventing falls with loved ones who may be at risk.”
In May 2022, Healthy Living for ME announced that over 2,100 Mainers had participated in the network’s falls prevention workshops, with 98 percent of participants reporting they have made positive changes due to their experience.
In 2022, Healthy Living for ME will be marking Falls Prevention Awareness month with several events in addition to the network’s regularly offered falls prevention workshops.
Falls Prevention Awareness Week is held during the awareness month, Sept. 18-24. During this week, Healthy Living for ME will be holding two public drop-in events to provide free balance assessments and information/resources to Mainers.
Aroostook Agency on Aging will partner with HL4ME during the Falls Prevention Awareness Month to host several events including regional informational sessions, as well as several demonstration events for ongoing wellness classes that are designed to improve balance, strength, and mobility to prevent falls. Among the factors that may put someone at risk for falls are balance and gait, as well as the presence of chronic conditions that lead to inactivity or pain. The World Boxing Association (WBA) officially joined the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The Court was originally created in 1984 to settle disputes at that year’s Olympic Games. However, time has led to its to growth and to encompass different branches in the global arena.
“The WBA has long been pursuing access to CAS as a way to give new resources of justice and transparency to boxers and everyone involved in the sport. We are very happy to have entered this system and deliver a new resource to all. CAS is a very respectable institution that has been involved in anti-doping cases, cases related to FIFA World Cups or decisions in Olympic Games. Undoubtedly, it will bring many benefits,” said WBA President Gilberto Jesús Mendoza.
The CAS has its headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, but also has courts in New York, United States; in Sydney, Australia; in Panama City, among other places.
The entry of the WBA into this system is a way to resolve conflicts once internal resources have been exhausted. The entity makes its entry effective and formally establishes that its decisions can be appealed through CAS, so that the ruling of this body will be definitive and final.
Athletes or any interested party may appeal by their own means in any of the three available languages (English, French and Spanish) and appoint their own lawyer to proceed.

Universal Music Group’s 10:22PM label created the group in partnership with NFT collector Jimmy “j1mmy” McNelis, who owns the NFTs.
Universal Music Group announced today that its virtual metaverse band, Kingship—which features characters based on Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT artwork—has tapped a pair of very real music producers that have created hits for superstars like Beyoncé, Jay Z, and Bruno Mars.
The veteran producers—Chauncey “Hit-Boy” Hollis and James Fauntleroy—will take the roles of co-executive producers and songwriters behind the Bored Ape band, and work to create music for the NFT-inspired characters to perform in videos and immersive online metaverse worlds.
Kingship hails from UMG’s 10:22PM label and was created by label head Celine Joshua. The characters in the band are based on Bored Ape Yacht Club and Mutant Ape Yacht Club NFTs licensed from notable collector Jimmy “j1mmy” McNelis. It’s similar to the seminal virtual band Gorillaz, albeit with a handful of valuable NFTs used as source material.
Hit-Boy is a well-known hip-hop producer and three-time Grammy winner who has produced hit singles for artists like Beyoncé, Kanye West, Rihanna, Jay Z, and Ariana Grande. Fauntleroy, meanwhile, is best known as a four-time Grammy-winning songwriter for artists like Bruno Mars, Beyoncé, and Justin Timberlake, plus he’s produced music for various other musicians.
A recent Kingship teaser video, released in August to mark a promotion with the M&M’s candy brand, offered the first taste of their musical contributions to the project. In July, Kingship released its own NFT project, launching 5,000 Ethereum key cards that provide special access to exclusive content and token-gated future experiences.
An NFT is a blockchain token that represents ownership of a digital item, and can be used for things like artwork, Bored Ape-style profile pictures, collectibles, and access passes to online communities and live events. The NFT market swelled to $25 billion worth of trading volume in 2021, per data from DappRadar.
The Bored Ape Yacht Club is arguably the best-known project in the space, racking up billions of dollars’ worth of trading volume while amassing numerous celebrity and athlete holders. Yuga Labs, the creator of the Ethereum project, raised $450 million earlier this year at a $4 billion valuation, and is working on its own metaverse game called Otherside.
Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT holders are given broad rights to use their owned images to create and sell derivative artwork and products. Some owners have used their Bored Ape imagery for things like fast food restaurants, cannabis and alcohol packaging, toys, and apparel.
UMG and 10:22PM aren’t the only creators that see opportunity at the intersection of Bored Apes and music: Storied producer and Ape owner Timbaland has also produced music from Bored Ape-based artists. He also released a single as his Bored Ape and sold NFTs of the music video itself.
Meanwhile, rappers Eminem and Snoop Dogg—also both Bored Ape NFT owners—recently released a collaborative single called “From The D 2 The LBC” that features their Ape images in the music video. They also performed the song live via 3D Ape avatars at the MTV Video Music Awards, and sold limited-edition merchandise based on their NFT characters.

NEW YORK, Sept 12 (Reuters) – Wall Street extended its winning streak on Monday, rallying to a sharply higher close as investors awaited crucial inflation data that could provide clues about the duration and severity of the Federal Reserve’s tightening policy.
Energy (.SPNY) and technology (.SPLRCT) shares helped the three major U.S. stock indexes touch two-week highs and notch their fourth straight session of gains, in which growth (.IGX) stocks were slightly favored over value (.IVX).
The Labor Department’s consumer price index (CPI), expected before Tuesday’s opening bell, is this week’s main event, and will be scrutinized for any signs regarding the number and size of future interest rate hikes from the Fed.

“CPI is expected to see a little bit of a decrease,” said Robert Pavlik, senior portfolio manager at Dakota Wealth in Fairfield, Connecticut. “The market is hoping that news translates into smaller rate hikes after the Sept FOMC meeting.”
“Because of that, you’re seeing a risk-on type of mentality today,” Pavlik added.
On Thursday, Fed Chair Jerome Powell affirmed the central bank remains “strongly committed” to tackling decades-high inflation, and that it would “keep at it until the job is done.” read more
Economists polled by Reuters expect monthly CPI to have contracted 0.1% in August from July, edging down to 8.1% year-on-year, mainly due to the recent cool-down of commodity prices. read more
Financial markets have currently priced in a 92% probability that the Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC) will implement its third straight 75-basis-point interest rate hike at the conclusion of next week’s policy meeting, according to CME’s FedWatch tool.
“The market has now fully priced in 75 basis points for September,” Pavlik said. “The market is hoping the next one is 50 basis points and that we’ll see a slight decrease in rate hikes after that, and Wall Street can live with that.”
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJI) rose 229.63 points, or 0.71%, to 32,381.34, the S&P 500 (.SPX) gained 43.05 points, or 1.06%, to 4,110.41 and the Nasdaq Composite (.IXIC) added 154.10 points, or 1.27%, to 12,266.41.
All 11 major sectors of the S&P 500 closed green. Energy companies (.SPNY), boosted by rising crude prices , enjoyed the biggest percentage gain.
Economically sensitive transports (.DJT) outperformed the broader market, while market-leading megacaps provided the most lift.
A 3.9% jump in Apple Inc (AAPL.O) shares gave the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq their biggest boost, days after the gadget maker unveiled updates to its iPhone and Apple Watch. read more

Earlier this year, news emerged about yet another Atari classic-gaming compilation, meant to celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary of originally incorporating. As we’ve seen quite a few Atari-branded collections over the years, we wondered exactly what shape Atari 50‘s selection of “over 100 games” would take ahead of its launch on Steam, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch on November 8.
Thanks to a European retailer listing that emerged over the weekend, we now have an apparently final list of the Atari 50 selection of games: 103 in all, as spread across arcade cabinets, six console families, and a selection of “reimagined,” newly coded games and ports. The verdict: It’s pretty good, yet it’s still a glaring reminder that the compilation might better be named “Atari Corp. 50.”
Missing vowels and details about Vctr Sctr (for now)
We’ll break this article up with platform-specific lists, which each include our own notes and analysis, and we’ll start with the least-surprising list. This collection’s stewards at Digital Eclipse (TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection) had already announced plans to “reimagine” six games beyond the original code supplied by Atari’s archives, and these alone could be worth the price of admission for ’70s and ’80s gaming stalwarts.
Two of these, Haunted House and Yars’ Revenge Reimagined, were announced as straightforward modern-graphic versions of their Atari 2600 counterparts, and while we trust Digital Eclipse’s track record, we have yet to see exactly how these two games have been rebuilt, or whether they lean on classic pixel designs or new 3D assets. Two additional games sound like souped-up, modern remixes of their original counterparts: Quadratank (a four-player touch-up of the 2600’s Tank) and Neo Breakout (which combines Breakout and Pong as a two-player versus game).
The last two reimagined games in the collection are the most intriguing. Vctr Sctr will combine “gameplay from a variety of vector arcade classics” into a newly remixed experience. It’s unclear whether this new game will break classics up into mini-games or smush them together into a new game experience, but either way, the original Atari arcade library was rich with vector-driven games to choose from. Additionally, Swordquest: Airworld is a brand-new sequel to the 2600’s three-part Swordquest series.
This week’s leak does not include any previously unknown games in the above “reimagined” category. For surprises, we should move onto the compilation’s selection of arcade cabinet games:

Since these lists are alphabetical, this selection’s biggest surprise is at the top. Akka Arrh is one of the rare few Atari arcade games to be canceled and somehow avoid a wider online release or leak in the years that followed. That changed in 2019 thanks to a controversial dumping of a rare cabinet’s ROM chips, so this game’s inclusion isn’t necessarily a world premiere for MAME enthusiasts. Still, Digital Eclipse and Atari Corp. deserve credit for shaking hands and giving fans a legitimate path toward purchasing and enjoying this unreleased game. (Atari Corp. had previously done this for the unreleased arcade game Maze Invaders, which launched on Atari Flashback Classics Vol. 3 in 2018.)
The collection’s biggest concession is made clear by the date range in the above list. Notice that no cabinets beyond the year 1983 appear. That’s no accident. Shortly after the early 1980s video game industry crash, the company’s corporate masters at Warner opted to break Atari into parts and sell them off. The hardware-focused division, Atari Corp., is responsible for this year’s anniversary compilation, while Atari Games, Inc., went on to release many incredible Atari-branded arcade games before eventually being acquired by Midway—which, this many years later, is now controlled by Warner Bros. Discovery. (A chance corporate-gaming reunion, then!)
Thus, Atari Corp. and Digital Eclipse apparently have not licensed a number of notable “Atari” arcade classics from their current license holders at WBD. That list is quite long, but just counting the year 1984, that leaves out the megaton games Paperboy and Marble Madness, with the legendary likes of Gauntlet and 720 following a few years later. Similarly, anything with a significant Hollywood tie-in, like 1983’s Star Wars, also doesn’t make the cut.

Digital transformation and sustainability consultancy Knowit AB is acquiring Ascend AB and its sister company Ionic AB. The enterprise value of the two companies initially totals SEK 200 million. Additional consideration can be paid out, conditional upon the EBITDA level for 2022 and 2023 respectively in the acquired entities. The additional consideration is estimated at SEK 50 million, which will also be included in the acquisition balance sheet on the day of acquisition, the companies said.

Knowit Acquires Ascend and Ionic
Knowit, founded in 1990, is based in Stockholm, Sweden. The company has 3,809 employees listed on LinkedIn. Knowit’s areas of expertise include application management, business intelligence, system development, test and quality management, Microsoft, EpiServer, digital marketing, web analytics, digital business transformation, organizational development, strategy, mobile development, management consulting and business consulting.
Ascend, founded in 2014, is based in Stockholm, Sweden. The company has 51 employees listed on LinkedIn. Ascend’s areas of expertise include business transformation, management consulting, sales transformation, service transformation and operations transformation.
Ionic, founded in 2019, is based in Stockholm, Sweden. The company has 13 employees listed on LinkedIn. Ionic is an IT consultancy delivering services covering all phases of cloud adoption.
The acquisitions will add around 60 employees in Stockholm, Sweden, to the combined company and bringing a total of about 500 consultants in the Nordic region. Ascend and Ionic will become part of Knowit’s Insight business area and bolster the firm’s management consulting offering in business technology and commercial excellence, the companies said. All four founders will remain with the company after the merger.

Before their Friday night matchup against reigning Class 6 state finalist Madison, the Yorktown seniors posed a challenge to one another: try to have fun, regardless of the circumstances.
Expectations were low outside of the Patriots’ locker room. The team had fallen to the Warhawks, 41-0, last year, and the players had seen people trash-talking them online. But Yorktown put all that aside and earned a 14-11 win to improve to 2-1. The Warhawks, meanwhile, suffered their third-straight one-score loss.
“Before the game, people were saying we’re supposed to get blown out, saying we’re a bunch of soft kids,” Yorktown senior running back Miles Fang said. “It was a great morale boost.”
The senior class, led by Fang and quarterback James Yoest, called it one of the biggest wins in their high school careers, and endorsed the play of the team’s unsung heroes.
Senior Dylan Minsker was the first to step up. The defensive back, who placed third in the high jump in the winter’s regional track and field meet, snagged a floating pass out of the air in the third quarter to give Yorktown the ball at the 5-yard line. One play later, the Patriots led 7-3.
Next came senior guard Daniel Sennott. Trailing again in the fourth quarter, Sennott set a block for his quarterback to extend life in the backfield. A clutch block came as no surprise to Fang, who has played with most of the linemen since eighth grade, nor Yoest, who has bonded with his teammates in the trenches since transferring during his sophomore year. The group has established traditions: When the front line plays well, someone on the team buys doughnuts.
Yoest rolled out behind Sennott, fell as he released the ball and prayed for a positive outcome. When he looked up, the Patriots had the lead.
“Charlie Taylor just took it all the way to the crib, and one of my coaches hoisted me up off the ground,” Yoest said. “The crowd was roaring behind us. It was just an awesome feeling.”
The team shared seven dozen doughnuts after the game.

The turnaround continues at Leonardtown
For the Leonardtown Raiders, Friday night’s 7-0 win over Huntingtown signified more than a successful defensive effort.
Sure, the defense was superb. The Raiders forced three turnovers and held Huntingtown, consistently one of the better teams in Southern Maryland, to fewer than 100 yards of total offense. Quarterback Dreylen Howard’s touchdown provided the difference.
But, there was big-picture significance as well. Wins such as that one don’t come often for Leonardtown. In 42 years, the program has posted just five winning seasons, including last fall.
“We’ve had to work to get everyone to believe that we could win,” Coach Justin Cunningham said. “We haven’t always been in that position to do that. But the staff and I have worked to let them know that if we work and we do our job, we can win on a Friday night.”
Cunningham, in his fourth year leading the Raiders, has toiled away at this turnaround. He took over the program after it had gone 1-19 in the previous two seasons, and the Raiders went winless again in his first year at the helm.
But those players that were freshman in Cunningham’s debut season are now seniors. And the Raiders are now being rewarded for that experience.
“That senior class has done a great job of leading by example for those younger guys,” Cunningham said. “And they didn’t necessarily have somebody to set that example for them.”
So, there was plenty to be proud of after Friday night. After the win, Cunningham told his team to take the night to enjoy it. After that, the turnaround would continue.
“The message is: ‘Great job. We just beat a really good football team. …We’re back at it tomorrow,’ ” Cunningham said.
Jeremiah Seaton, Blake: Seaton, only a sophomore, ran wild in the Bengals’ rout of Churchill. He finished with 254 yards rushing and four touchdowns.
Carter Working, Lightridge: The junior was nearly spotless in the 3-0 Bolts’ blowout win over Dominion, completing 16 of his 17 passes for 175 yards in just one half of play.
WR Max Moss, Archbishop Spalding: The senior caught the game-winning 83-yard touchdown pass with 51 seconds remaining in the Cavaliers’ 20-13 win over Imhotep Charter (Pa.).
Kshawn Cox, Wise: The senior returned a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns in Wise’s 57-0 win over Northwest. Cox was in line to return a second punt for a touchdown, but elected to share the wealth by handing it off to a teammate at the 10-yard line.

McNamara nabs first victory
Greg Calhoun believes building relationships and exposure for his players is as important as schemes while constructing a contender. So three months after Bishop McNamara hired Calhoun as its coach, Calhoun followed a June practice with an opportunity to display his personality.
The Alexander City, Ala., native cooked Conecuh sausage from Alabama and ordered a slip-and-slide for players and coaches.
“You can be hard on them, be demanding,” Calhoun said. “But at the same time, also just being a person who can have fun with them as well.”
McNamara took its first step toward contention under Calhoun on Friday, when players gave Calhoun a Gatorade bath after his first win, 38-12, over Riverdale Baptist.
Calhoun learned the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference’s prestige when he started as an assistant coach at Gilman in 2017. The Baltimore school opened its season with losses to Gonzaga and Good Counsel. Calhoun desired to lead a WCAC program, and that became a reality in February after he served as an assistant at Clark Atlanta University in Georgia last year.
Calhoun, 33, took over a program that has long been the doormat of the WCAC’s Capital division. Trying to match the exposure rivals receive, the Mustangs (1-2) will participate in a showcase at Rutgers on Sunday against Lincoln (N.Y.).
“It’s been very known that, ‘Hey, we’re supposed to be at the bottom of the conference,’ ” Calhoun said. “But at the end of the day, it’s almost like, ‘Why not us?’ ”

Friendship Collegiate stays confident
Coming into Friday night’s meeting with Dunbar, Friendship Collegiate found itself in an unfamiliar situation.
After establishing itself as one of the premier football programs in the area over the last 10 years, Friendship Collegiate, affectionately known as the Beach Boyz, limped to a 3-7 record in 2021. A topsy-turvy start to this season fueled online chatter about there being a changing of the guard within the D.C. State Athletic Association hierarchy.
During pregame preparations, members of the Tide could be seen pointing toward Friendship’s sideline as they emphatically rapped the lyrics of Bank Roll Fresh’s hit single, “Take over yo trap.”
But once the ball was snapped, the Tide’s proclamations fell hollow as the Knights flexed their muscles on the way to a resounding 27-14 home victory.
“Last year was disappointing for us record-wise, because we didn’t meet our program expectations,” Coach Mike Hunter said. “With that being said, we never lost confidence or feared that we couldn’t be one of the best teams in D.C.”
Dunbar pulled off a double-pass play for a long touchdown, but after that Friendship Collegiate (2-1) asserted its dominance with 27 unanswered points.
“If people want to view us as an underdog, that’s perfectly fine with us, because as a program we pride ourselves on playing a challenging schedule,” Hunter said. “But regardless of how others view us coming in, they still have to strap up and prove that on the field.”

EA Sports have revealed the top 23 men’s players on FIFA 23, ahead of the game’s launch later this month.
In what will be the final game of the iconic series before the franchise moves in a new direction, without the FIFA license, there has been relatively little movement at the top.
Indeed, only three of last year’s top 23 (Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, Gianluigi Donnarumma and Luis Suarez) have dropped out this time around.
Global cover star Kylian Mbappe may have expected to finally be top dog as the powers of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo wane, but the Paris Saint-Germain phenom has just made the podium thanks to another pair of experienced heads ageing like fine wines.

He won UEFA’s player of the season award, he finished top scorer in La Liga and the Champions League en route to lifting both trophies, he’s the clear favourite for the Ballon d’Or, and now he’s the standout in the virtual world, too.
Karim Benzema has been ranked as the game’s best player by EA Sports, with a career-high overall rating of 92 for his base card on FIFA Ultimate Team.
The Real Madrid striker’s pace has shot up from 76 to 80, shooting from 86 to 88, and passing from 81 to 83.
His physicality has improved by one point to 78, while dribbling (87) and defence (39) have remained consistent with last term.

Messi still ranks within the top five players on FIFA 23, with an overall rating of 91. However, it does seem a far cry from his peak of 94 (seen on FIFA 12, 13, 14, 16, 19 and 20). Last season, he was the best player in the game.
Though he’s started the current campaign on fire, Messi’s form dipped drastically upon moving from Barcelona to PSG. As such, five of his six core Ultimate Team stats have fallen since FIFA 22, with only his defence (34) staying the same.
Of particular concern to FUT managers, his pace has dropped by four to 81, and his shooting by three to 89.

That’s a drop of one on FIFA 22, for the striker now finding himself in the unusual position of warming the Old Trafford bench.
The Portuguese’s pace has sharply dipped by six to 81, with passing falling by four to 78.
How many Premier League players are in the FIFA 23 top 23?
Arsenal are the only member of the Premier League’s ‘Big Six’ without a representative in this first batch of FIFA 23 ratings.
The other five teams have combined for 11 players here, with Liverpool boasting Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson.
Manchester City can equal that, as Kevin De Bruyne and Ederson are joined by new boy Erling Haaland.
Manchester United are on two, as Casemiro reuintes with fellow Real Madrid legend Cristiano Ronaldo. Spurs maintain the same pair as last season, in Harry Kane and Heung-min Son.
Chelsea round out the list of England-based players, with N’Golo Kante, despite his struggles over the last year.
In comparison, there are five players from La Liga, four from Ligue 1 (all PSG) and three from the Bundesliga (all Bayern Munich).
Who are the biggest movers since FIFA 22?
Benzema has the seen the biggest year-on-year improvement of any player, going from 14th to first following his spectacular run to Champions League glory.
Sadio Mane, who led Senegal to the Africa Cup of Nations title and starred for Liverpool before his summer switch to Bayern Munich, has shot up by nine.
Haaland is next, jumping eight places following his switch to City, even though his overall rating of 88 has remained the same, with scores across the board seemingly slightly lower this time around. This comes after a 71-spot leap last season.
Centre-backs Van Dijk and Marquinhos have also climbed by eight places.
Of those in this batch of 23, Jan Oblak has taken the biggest nosedive, dropping 13 places after his shakiest season with Atletico Madrid yet.
A pair of Premier League stars have fallen the next-furthest, with Kane dropping by nine, and Kante by 10.
Three men have stayed in exactly the same position: Robert Lewandowski, De Bruyne and Manuel Neuer.

It’s something of a cliché to state that an artist needs no introduction, but with deadmau5, this may in fact be true. His big-eared mouse helmet might possibly be the most recognizable brand in electronic music.
Finding globe-sweeping success in the late ‘00s, deadmau5 played a pivotal role in pushing EDM into the musical mainstream, becoming one of the world’s highest-played and highest-paid electronic artists in the process. Grammy nominations, platinum records and world tours soon followed, as the producer courted adoration and controversy in equal measure over the next decade.
Fast forward to 2022, and he remains as influential as ever, and no less exploratory: continuing to produce electrifying singles that reimagine progressive house with each release, he’s nurtured the careers of like-minded artists through his label, mau5trap, and entered into the software world with the release of OSC/PILOT, an innovative performance tool for electronic artists.
For a man that’s notoriously averse to interviews, we find mouse-headed superproducer deadmau5 in a relatively good mood. Speaking to us, sans headgear and cigarette in hand, from his home in Ontario, Joel Zimmerman seemed content to spend an expletive-sprinkled thirty minutes talking shop, painting a picture of an artist equally excited by the technology used to create and perform music as the music itself.
Can you tell us about some of your favourite software tools?
“I don’t know, man. I guess everyone was like “fuck it” during the pandemic. Nothing really crazy has really advanced that far. To be honest, I feel like we’ve kind of ceilinged on music software. There’s a lot more of the same that’s come out, like… oh hey, it’s a new reverb. Nothing’s really stood out. But then again, I hadn’t really been looking.”
So you think we’ve hit a wall in terms of advancements in music software?
“Well, you can always do better, faster, more efficient. But in the realm of DSP, I almost feel like we’ve hit it all. It’s just a lot of the same. And I’m just like, waiting for a lot of things to get overhauled and done a different way. I’m seeing some new DAWs come out, and stuff like that. The ones that I’m liking the most are the ones that have a lot of really cool protocol control inside of them.

“Ableton’s been cool, just because it’s 18 years in development, it’s nice and stable and all that stuff. And it’s shell-ready. But it really lacks in protocol modularity. It’s just like, oh, here’s MIDI. Here’s an antiquated 60-year-old protocol you guys can still use… like what? Just have OSC! And they do, but you have to do it in Python or use Max for Live, and there’s no native OSC stuff. So actually, a lot of the time I’ve spent during the pandemic was developing a VST that will allow for the interchange of different protocols in and out of any DAW.”
What DAW are you using the most these days?
“I switch between all sorts of things depending on what it is that I’m trying to do. For MIDI-deep stuff like I tend to go to Cubase for better control. Because Ableton is not so great for that, but Ableton is good for quick and dirty. So if I just need something quick and dirty, I’ll just go in there and do some quick edits.
“It just depends on what it’s called for. Because a lot of the mixing I’ll do on my desk, and neither Cubase or Ableton supports SwiftMix for my Neve console, but Pro Tools does. So I gotta use that for that, so I can recall faders and stuff like that on my desk. It’s a big mess of different DAWs for different things.”

Tell us about the approach behind the production on your latest single, XYZ?
“I don’t think I really had one. It was just like, okay, time to sit down in the studio and crank one out. It was just a lot of farting around and tooling and playing with some synths, and just coming up with this main hook thing. And I was like, okay, I can work with that. And then I just built around that.”
Were there any particular instruments, synths or effects that were fundamental to the track?
“I did get to finally try out VCV Rack 2.0. I’ve been waiting so long for this. VCV Rack has always been great. But 2.0 finally has sample-accurate sync with the plugin in a DAW now. The other one, you had to use a host and it was a little late here and there, and the sync wasn’t nice and all that stuff. But now in VCV Rack 2.0 Pro, they have a host that works in any DAW that’s sample-accurate, finally, and it’s fucking amazing.
“Because a lot of the modules, these days at least, with modular racks, if you go out and buy a bunch of mods, chances are one in three, it’s going to be a digital module, which means it’s just lines of code. So there’s all the Mutable Instruments stuff, and all the really cool fancy expensive ones, you can buy for like next to nothing through VCV Rack, and they’re the exact same module. Even better, because you don’t have to record the analogue path. It’s just printing it digitally, right there.
“A lot of those oscillators are great. Obviously, not so much the analogue oscillators like you’d get out of a Cynthia or something like that. But the digital oscillators, all the wavetable stuff and the digital FM ops, and stuff like that are fucking great. So I actually did get to use that on XYZ. That was kind of cool.”
Do you have a physical modular set-up too?
“Oh, you clearly didn’t Google that. Yeah, I’ve got a 30-foot wall. I’ve been known to collect the analogue modulars.”
What was the last module you bought?
“The last module I bought was probably my third Yarns from Mutable Instruments, because like I said, it’s got to be at least a good 20, 30 feet. Having just one MIDI-to-CV converter somewhere in there is kind of inconvenient, because I have to patch out to mults, and then into other things. So I had to get three to space them out throughout the system, so I can reach cables to certain banks of oscillators without having to go through like 20 mults just to get to the other side of the synth.”

Having a modular synth that large, is there ever a point where you’re confronted with too many options?
“Yeah, but it’s not crippling. It just means I get a different result every time, which is kind of nice, as opposed to just doing the same thing over and over.”
Looking back now to when you first started producing, you were using Impulse Tracker, right?
“Yeah, actually. Wow, see – he knew that. [laughs] Actually, if you want to be stupid about it, my first song was written in Turing. Then I upgraded to MS-DOS. Jeffrey Lim, the Australian guy, wrote Impulse Tracker. Scream Tracker was their other one, those were the two big trackers back in the early ‘90s. I did cracktros – that was fun.”
How did things progress from there?
“I hung around in that scene for a while, and then met some dudes and hung out with like minded people who did the same thing, and then showed them what I was using, versus what they were using. It was a very small collective back in the day, because the Internet was not as big. And there definitely weren’t any real life clubs of people using trackers or anything like that. It’s not like I had a friend within 100 miles of me that even knew what a tracker was, much less knew they could make music on a computer alone.
“It was just a case of putting feelers out there, putting in some footwork and meeting a couple of likeminded people. Then moving within those tribes and creating opportunities for myself to apply those skill sets into real world practicalities, like working in a radio station, or making advertisements or composing music for stock library stuff. And that’s kind of where it all stemmed from.”

Do you still use trackers today?
“Not really. Matter of fact, I don’t even think I could probably get around an Impulse Tracker anymore. I’ve seen it, I know what it looks like in my brain. You know the old monitors when they would burn the image into the monitor? That’s what I’m seeing in my brain, but I don’t think I could figure it out. I don’t know if it’s like riding a bike. They’re all very programmatic. It was a lot of using the arrow keys. And no mouse – once you load the tracker, you just put the mouse to the side and use your keyboard and navigate around that way.
“There are some plugins that will emulate what trackers do. Even then, if you just want to run a pure tracker, you’ve got to run a virtual machine or something to emulate that MS-DOS functionality and all that stuff, too. I think that’s all deprecated in Windows now.”
Would you describe yourself as more of a keyboard-and-mouse producer or someone that’s more tactile, and likes working with real instruments?
“Keyboard and mouse all the way. Some people will have that kind of muscle memory and those skill sets ingrained in their brain to be able to put their hands on some tactile instrument and put out their idea and do whatever they want. But I’ve gone through those motions where I tried to train myself to be a proficient player, but the right brain turned on and I’m like, well – why? So I just kept doing what I was comfortable with. There’s no better way to do that, and everyone’s different. For me, it just worked out that I’ve just got a very input/output brain.”
How often are you experimenting with new gear?
“I’ve got my mainstays, which contribute to the tone and sound you’ll hear in my music. You know – you hear a fucking saxophone and you know it’s Kenny G. I do introduce new stuff from time to time just for fun, and playing with it and ...
