They took a Lambeau Leap and celebrated the upset by donning a cheesehead, much to the chagrin of a Packers player. It was rookie cornerback Sauce Gardner who wore the cheesehead, a gift from an ecstatic Jets fan in the crowd. As he strutted off the field and to the tunnel — the wrong tunnel, as it turned out — Gardner was caught from behind, so to speak, by Allen Lazard. The Packers’ wide receiver knocked Gardner’s block (of cheese) off, creating a moment that went viral on social media. “I’m definitely never going to forget this moment,” Gardner said, laughing at his locker. “It’s a tribute to the Jets fans. They put in on my head, the Jets fans. I just had to take it and run with it.” Lazard took it well, complimenting Gardner on his game and his nickname (“Sauce, that’s a cool name”) and insisting he wasn’t bothered by the rookie’s gesture. “It’s just a little competitive spirit,” Lazard said. “Nothing too harmful in that aspect or anything. CFTC Action Shows Why Crypto Developers Should Get Ready To Leave The US – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cftc-action-shows-why-crypto-developers-should-get-ready-to-leave-the-us-cointelegraph/ Considerable anxiety exists in the world of Web3 related to regulation and the legal status of cryptocurrency projects. It’s particularly apparent in the United States, where the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) fueled concerns in September with an announcement that it was imposing a $250,000 fine on a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO), Ooki DAO, and its investors. The fine was particularly ominous, considering DAOs are intended to be “regulation proof.” The CFTC said in its statement on the issue that Ooki DAO’s bZeroX protocol offered illegal off-exchange trading of digital assets. The agency took issue with the fact that the founders, Tom Bean and Kyle Kistner, tried to use the existing bZeroX protocol within the DAO to put it beyond the reach of regulators. “By transferring control to a DAO, bZeroX’s founders touted to bZeroX community members the operations would be enforcement-proof,” the CFTC said. “The bZx Founders were wrong, however. DAOs are not immune from enforcement and may not violate the law with impunity.” The fine is not all that surprising. The CFTC and other regulators are not going to abide by a veil of decentralization. But, there is something within the ruling that is extremely worrying to Web3 lawyers and developers. The agency’s complaint indicated that the voters within a given DAO could be distinctly liable. In other words, no longer will only founders be targeted, as users who take part could also be liable. This is sure to have a chilling effect on turning people away from DAOs and Web3 in general. After all, the whole point is to avoid this kind of targeting and to create new ecosystems where all parties can vote in peace on issues that concern them. The Securities and Exchange Commission is vying with the CFTC for authority over the world of Web3. Crypto libertarians would dispute whether centralized authorities should have a say at all in an ecosystem that they have only attacked and never aided. The Stabenow-Boozman bill, a proposal in the U.S. Senate, would potentially give the CFTC direct oversight of tokens that qualify as digital commodities. This means that exchanges and online Web3 providers would potentially register with the CFTC, further enmeshing decentralized finance (DeFi) within a centralized web that it was engineered to escape. Monitoring wallets, targeting smart contracts and more The SEC has traditionally sought to regulate cryptocurrency as much as possible. The agency plays a useful role as it is able to pursue instances of outright fraud and Ponzi schemes, which are rampant in Web3. But, there is a stark difference between going after instances of fraud and regulating or governing the industry with regulations that are inapplicable. There are too many question marks related to crypto regulation. One example is related to microtransactions and airdrops. Such transactions take place on many different exchanges over many years, with various price fluctuations. This is impossible to report on from a tax perspective, especially when many platforms are no longer operating. Along with rewards for staking and even derivative tokens liquid staking, it becomes almost impossible to account for. The Biden administration is even targeting Proof-of-Work (POW) blockchains with new “comprehensive guidelines” issued in September. That’s at the same time many administration officials seem to be pushing for a digital USD. Another extremely controversial, draconian crypto regulation that lawmakers have floated includes forcing receivers to verify the personal information of senders when transactions exceed $10,000. They are also seeking to regulate smart contracts as future contracts. And criminal charges are being introduced for those who develop mixers or privacy coins. Though nobody has really said it, what we seem to be witnessing is a war on crypto cloaked in democratic language. The very pillars upon which distributed ledgers have been built are crumbling if these measures are enforced. More conflict to follow? The conflict between traditional regulators and modern finance seems to be reaching a melting point. Regulations are not adapting to meet the needs and strengths of modern DeFi. As such, there is now a standoff between new Web3 protocols and existing legislation. It is almost impossible to deal with the existing legal system as it is not flexible enough to account for DeFi. Ooki DAO is indeed a bad omen for U.S. crypto developers. And it certainly won’t be the last one. A sleuth of bills and procedures are in place. Paradoxically, such actions are likely to simply encourage developers to create programs that are even more resistant to existing laws. The impossibility of complying with existing legislation can leave them with little other choices. From another angle, perhaps the path forward is quite clear. All protocols moving forward may have to be fully decentralized. This was the premise of the very first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin (BTC). Without a central point of failure, there is nobody to target. Developers will have to work on building ecosystems that are completely separate with no ties to the legacy financial system. Blockchains free of identity and Know-Your-Customer (KYC) requirements are the only possible option if developers want to continue operating on American shores. (Photo by Andrew Hile/UAA Communications) Sunday, October 16, 2022 Gators Find Success on Sunday at ITA Southeast Regionals De Oliveira captured the consolation singles title while Briggs and Dudeney advanced to the championship of main draw doubles.   ATLANTA – Florida women’s tennis found success on the courts at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southeast Regional on Sunday, capturing a consolation singles title while sending doubles team to the championship round.   In the main draw of doubles competition, the duo of Carly Briggs and Alicia Dudeney continued to roll, earning a spot in the championship on Monday after a strong performance in the semifinal round. Taking on Georgia Tech’s Kylie Bilchev and Alejandra Cruz, the duo earned a straight-set victory behind a 6-4, 7-5 effort.   With the doubles title on the line, the Gators will meet the top-ranked doubles tandem in the country on Monday at 12 p.m. ET when Georgia Tech’s Kate Sharabura and Carol Lee take the court against the Orange & Blue.   Sophomore Emily De Oliveira represented the Gators in consolation singles on Sunday, beginning with the semifinal round in the morning when she met South Florida’s Laura Pellicer Perello. De Oliveira maintained her impressive play, defeating her opponent: 6-4, 6-2, to earn a spot in the consolation championship.   Alejandra Cruz of Georgia Tech awaited De Oliveira in the final matchup of the consolation tournament, setting the stage for a highly-contested championship. Cruz struck first, taking the opening frame 6-4, before De Oliveira responded with a dominant set of her own, evening the match with a 6-2 second set. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office reported around 2:30 p.m. that the fire had broken through containment lines and is aggressively moving to the west and southwest. The fire has grown from 156 acres to about 350 acres, according to the Department of Natural Resources A large smoke plume, blowing generally east to west, became visible throughout the metro area late Sunday morning as fire activity picked up.  “This is highly dynamic, wind-driven fire with long-distance spotting,” DNR spokeswoman Trina Contreras said Sunday afternoon before a 3:30 p.m. press conference at Grove Field in Camas. She said emergency warnings have been sent to about 3,000 residents using the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency’s alert system. Contreras said the fire had remained contained until high winds whipped up Sunday morning, driving the blaze to the west and southwest. “The winds up there were really gusting, and we got some significant growth,” Contreras said. Those high winds prevented the use of an air tanker on the fire earlier in the day, but Contreras said conditions had improved Sunday afternoon and the tanker was being used again. Evacuation zones have expanded repeatedly throughout the day and may expand more, officials warned. Updated fire and evacuation information will be posted at www.cresa911.org. A shelter location has been opened by the American Red Cross at Camas Church of Nazarene, 2204 N.E. Birch St, Camas. ilani has opened up parking lots 10 and 11 for evacuees. Those using the lots are asked to put a sign in their window saying “Fire Evacuee.” No RV services are available, and gray water will need to be dumped at the Gee Creek Rest Area. For livestock shelter, call  360-607-2535 for assistance. Livestock can be taken to Clark County Fairgrounds, 17402 N.E. Delfel Road, Ridgefield. Level 3 “Go Now” mandatory evacuation area has expanded to include the Larch Mountain Corrections Center and outlying areas in Camas and Washougal, including the Bear Prairie and the Ireland area near Livingston Mountain. Level 2 “Get Set” voluntary evacuation area now expands into Hockinson and north Camas and Washougal. Level 1 “Get Ready” warnings extend throughout Camas and Washougal and as far west as Northeast 182nd Avenue and as far north and Northeast Sunset Falls Road. Those in “Level 3 Go Now” should evacuate to the south toward Washougal River Road into Washougal. “Please understand that this is a very dynamic situation and if you are anywhere near this area, you should take precautions to evacuate,” a bulletin from CRESA said. The fire activity has increased as the area remained under a red flag warning for wind and low humidity levels through 6 p.m. Sunday. Southeast winds of 10-20 mph were forecast in the area of the fire, with gusts up to 30 mph and humidity as low as 22 percent. The National Weather Service reported that an air quality alert remains in effect for the area through 5 p.m. Monday. The AirNow.gov website shows air quality in the moderate to unhealthy in parts of Southwest Washington due to wildfire smoke. The Nakia Creek Fire started on Oct. 9 in an extremely steep area covered with a mix of brush, medium logging slash and timber. Prior to the fire’s expansion Sunday containment was estimated at 20 percent. The fire had been smoldering and creeping with some torching observed and short-range spotting. Fire managers said the potential for fire growth remains, and containment lines are being put in place. Contreras said there are 110 personnel working the fire with one spotter plane and one air tanker. A larger Type 2 team has been called in and will assist in the effort, she said. Staying safe The American Red Cross offered these wildfire safety tips for those in the fire area: Be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice and obey all evacuation orders from officials. Back your car into the garage or park it outside, facing the direction of your evacuation route. Keep your pets in one room, so you can find them if you need to evacuate quickly. Limit exposure to smoke and dust. Keep indoor air clean by closing windows and doors to prevent outside smoke from getting in. Don’t use anything that burns, such as candles, fireplaces and gas stoves. If you’re trapped outdoors, crouch in a pond, river or pool. Don’t put wet clothing or bandanas over your mouth or nose, as moist air can cause more damage to your airway than dry air at the same temperature. If there is no body of water, look for shelter in a cleared area or among a bed of rocks. Lie flat, face-down and cover your body with soil. Breathe the air close to the ground to avoid scorching your lungs or inhaling smoke. Don’t return home until officials say it’s safe to do so. Inspect the roof immediately and extinguish any sparks or embers. Wildfires may have left embers that could reignite. Check your home for embers that could cause fires. Look for signs of a fire including smoke or sparks. Avoid damaged or downed power lines, poles and wires. Keep a close eye on your animals. Hidden embers and hot spots could burn them. Wet down debris to minimize breathing in dust particles. Wear work gloves and shoes with heavy soles. Throw out any food that has been exposed to heat, smoke or soot. Marathon Runner On Living And Running With MS – Prevention Magazine https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/marathon-runner-on-living-and-running-with-ms-prevention-magazine/ I started training for my first marathon in 2016. I’m competitive by nature, so I had high expectations of myself and was excited to show off my skills to my family in my hometown of Chicago. But things didn’t go as I’d planned. During the race, I had trouble lifting my foot. I stopped for a while in the medical tent and ended up walking, rather than running, to the finish line. It wasn’t the way I’d hoped to finish but I figured that a visit to a doctor in Houston, where I live, would get me through my injury. By the time I went to the doctor, though, I was noticing other symptoms that caught me off guard. For instance, not only was I having trouble lifting my foot (known as foot drop), I was feeling exhausted daily and often I wasn’t able to feel my extremities. The doctor told me I didn’t have a sports injury and that instead I should see a neurologist. After several frustrating months of appointments and testing—including an MRI and bloodwork— I was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis, which is a disease that develops when the immune system attacks the central nervous system and causes nerve damage. The “progressive” part of my diagnosis meant that my symptoms would continue to get worse and would drastically limit my functioning. Oddly enough, getting the diagnosis was a bit of a relief because I finally knew the reason I was experiencing tremors, numbness, and fatigue. Of course, I was also scared, but I was referred to an MS clinic near me and I trusted that the doctors there would help me. Living life with MS To my shock, I was told that based on my neurological loss, I would have only about five more years until I’d be confined to a wheelchair. They told me to travel and do all the things I wanted to do while I was still able. Not wanting to think about the future, my husband Joe and I chose to focus on the present and travel to as many places on our bucket list as possible, as quickly as we could. More From Prevention In April of 2019, we took our first bucket-list trip to Ireland. As luck would have it, there was an MS run/walk happening there and we signed up. In the race packet, I read about “HSCT” (technically called hematopoietic stem cell transplantation) for the first time, which was described as an experimental treatment that could stop MS progression by essentially wiping out your immune system then receiving healthy stem cells to “reset” it. There are trials underway here, but it’s not available in the U.S. as a standard treatment option—and it’s extremely expensive, risky, and new. So I put it on the back burner and continued to focus on making the moments I had count. I continued running, but it was getting harder and harder. Even though I didn’t want to acknowledge it, I had to come to terms with the fact that my racing days were limited. I remember telling my running partner that once it became impossible for me to run, I’d just cheer her on. But I was hard headed and wasn’t going to stop without a fight. What my invisible disability looks like I usually didn’t even appear to have a disability to the outside world. In fact, when I was first diagnosed and got the handicap placard for my car, people actually yelled at me for using a handicap space because they didn’t think I had a true disability. That would upset me, but I’m not one to yell out my personal diagnosis across a parking lot to someone who is unimportant to my life, so I tried to ignore that as much as I could. One thing that helped, however, was that I got a therapy dog, named Hope, who was trained through the National Multiple Sclerosis Society to recognize and assist with tremors and seizures. I put a vest on her that said, “I’m visible. Her disability isn’t.” As Joe and I were about to fly to Paris on our second bucket-list trip—where I was planning to run my last half marathon ever—I came to a realization. There I was in the airport, using a cane (albeit a cute one), wearing an e-brace on my leg (a device that sends electrical shocks to help me lift my foot), and watching Joe lug around a big wheelchair the doctors had suggested we bring just in case I needed it. And it struck me that if I didn’t try to stop the progression of my MS, we were headed for a lifetime with that wheelchair and a future where my husband and daughter would have to wait on me hand and foot. So Joe and I decided we had to at least see if I was a candidate for HSCT. The treatment is not for everyone with MS, but I qualified for it, and we hurried to make arrangements to go the HSCT clinic in Mexico in January 2020. I had a lot of fears and there was a 20 to 30 percent chance that the treatment wouldn’t work, but I felt that this was my shot, and I had to take it. Patrick Pressgrove Where I am today The treatment wasn’t easy, but I really did go into the clinic with my cane, and walked out of the clinic a month later on my own. It was surreal. Afterwards, my physical therapist helped me to strengthen the muscles I’d stopped using and retrain my weakened body, and slowly but surely, I learned to walk and run with an improved gait that helps me control my foot. I wasn’t the same runner I was before my MS diagnosis but I was determined to run marathons again because training puts me in a positive mindset and gives me something to work toward. I soon learned that I qualified for the 2021 Boston Marathon as an adaptive athlete (a person with disabilities who is allowed modifications during sports competitions) and I went for it. Unfortunately, during the race, I had to stop at mile 20 because I suffered an extreme bout of foot drop. I had to move forward carefully so as not to cause further damage, which is a risk when the muscles are strained. I was disappointed that I had to walk the rest of the way to the finish line, but the experience led me to an even more exciting opportunity: I was picked by Degree Deodorant to get another chance at finishing a marathon as one of their “Not Done Yet” runners for the San Francisco Marathon in July 2022. I was thrilled because being a part of the campaign would enable me to spread the word about HSCT and show others that those of us with disabilities can break barriers. I trained hard for this one. And it paid off. When I ran across that finish line, it was momentous. It was definitely an “ugly cry” moment. Now, I’m ready for more. I’m back in training for my next marathon. I still have tremors when my muscles are fatigued. I also have to be very particular in my movements in order to do things that were once simple, and that takes a lot of extra effort and focus. But I push through it because it’s worth it and because I’m not going to let MS define me. I might stumble but I don’t quit, and I hope that inspires other people with disabilities to go for their goals, too. Back to the We Are Not Invisible project

He’s now had multiple drops and was part of the fumbled exchange with Allen on Buffalo’s first series. Pinned This is a fun watch by nature of Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes being the QBs, but it’s not really a good watch in terms of smart, efficient football, at least so far. Both sides are content letting their star signal-callers drop 10-15 yards behind the line on every play, so that they can uncork a big shot. When, in reality, Buffalo for example could just keep running Devin Singletary and be in the red zone every series. There’s not a ton of balance here; just sheer gunslinging. That’s why it’s 7-3 and not 20-17. But man, if you’re a Bills fan, you gotta be on edge every time he runs the ball. A few times in this game already he’s powered into a defender near the sticks and taken big shots. Woolworths subsidiary suffers data breach Online marketplace MyDeal, which is a subsidiary of Woolworths, revealed 2.2 million customer records had leaked from its CRM thanks to a ‘compromised user credential’. Data accessed includes customer names, email addresses, phone numbers and delivery addresses, and in some instances, dates of birth (if provided to purchase alcohol). MyDeal does not store payment, drivers licence or passport details and no customer account passwords or payment details have been compromised. No other Woolworths system was involved in the breach. 2. QLD e-scooter penalties ‘designed to hurt’ Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced Friday afternoon that from November 1, tough penalties will apply for those using an e-scooter in the state. The biggest fine will be $1,078 for using your phone while riding, with drink driving the next highest penalty, at $431. The fines are hefty, but state Transport Minister Mark Bailey said, “The fines are going to hurt, they’re designed to”. Be safe out there, folks. Why? Well according to a blog post, the card is “fantastic,” but “it’s not named right. Having two GPUs with the 4080 designation is confusing.” Not helping Nvidia’s attempts to avoid confusing its customers, the company’s short and un-revealing announcement isn’t completely clear about what’s really going on here. While a government-issued photo ID is not required to vote, it can be helpful to bring one should any questions about registration, address, signature, or more arise during the voting process. Guava is one such seasonal fruit that we wait for throughout the year, and we are glad guava season is now in full swing.  There are many ways we can use guava to create delightful recipes. Other than the usual savoury street food that is made with a spicy mustard sauce and other condiments, there are several other ways to go about it. GUAVA JAM Making guava jam every season has become a tradition in many households. This can be enjoyed with bread or used as a filling in pies, cookies, jam bars, and cakes. Ingredients 300g ripe guavas 2/3 cup sugar 1 tbsp lime juice Water Red food colour Method Grate the guavas finely and add them to a pan with enough water to cover them entirely. Then, cook this on medium heat for about one hour until the guava pieces change colour and become soft. Place a cheesecloth on a large sieve and pour the cooked guava over it. Squeeze out all the guava water and boil this with sugar. Cook the guava water by stirring continuously and once it is in full boil, add lime juice and red food colour. After about 15 minutes, check by pouring a little amount in a bowl of water – if it does not mix then it is ready, but if it mixes with water cook for another five minutes. Boil a glass jar for five minutes to sterilise it and then wipe it dry with a clean cloth. Pour the guava jam in it while it is still hot and let this cool in room temperature for eight hours or overnight. After that, you can store this in the refrigerator. GUAVA MOJITO The freshness of guava and a spicy kick from the chilli powder makes this mojito a truly sensational drink.   Ingredients 1 large guava 2 tbsp sugar 1 tsp black salt 1 lime ½ cup water 250ml soda water  1 tsp red chilli powder 1 tsp salt A handful of mint leaves  Ice cubes Method Cut the guava into cubes and blend with a little bit of water, sugar, and black salt to make a fine puree. Pass this through a fine-mesh sieve to get a smooth puree and get rid of the seeds. Rub a lime wedge on the rim of a glass and in a plate, mix chilli powder and salt, and dip the rim of the glass in it. Muddle a lime wedge and some mint leaves together in the glass and add a few ice cubes. Pour in the guava puree and then add in soda water. Gently mix these together, this is ready to drink! To uplift your presentation, in a skewer, add a lime wedge and half-moon guava slice and place it on top of the glass for added edge. GUAVA PUDDING This is a quintessential summer dessert that is soothing to the taste buds and stomach, which will leave you craving for more with every mouthful. Ingredients 2 medium-sized guavas ¾ cup water 1/3 cup sugar ¼ cup corn flour ¼ tsp black salt Few drops of green food colour (optional) Few mint leaves Method Dice the guavas into little cubes and blend them with water to get a puree – pass this through a sieve to make it smooth. To this, add sugar, black salt, corn flour, and green food colour. Mix everything together until it is one homogenous mixture and cook it on medium heat. Stir and cook until the mixture thickens and bubbles form. Remove this from heat and let it cool. Once cooled, pour this into individual serving bowls and top each one with a sprig of mint. Let this cool in the refrigerator for two hours before serving. GUAVA IN COCONUT CREAM This refreshing dessert is one of a kind. It is creamy and refreshing with sago pearls, and the tartness of the fruit provides a refreshing balance to the sweetened coconut sauce. Ingredients 1 can coconut milk 1 cup water   ½ cup coconut cream ½ cup sugar ½ cup sago pearls 3 small ripe guavas A pinch of salt Method   Cook the sago pearls in boiling water until they are translucent and puffed. Once cooked, drain the starchy water and leave this aside. Next, in a pan, add the coconut milk, sugar and salt, and bring this to a simmer. The Hokies had tied the set at 19-19 after a kill from Cera Powell but the Irish came out of the timeout to take the win. Powell and Petersen each led Tech with three kills, as Powell added six digs in the first.  Virginia Tech responded to pick up a 25-20 victory in set two, evening the match at one set apiece. A powerful defensive showing helped the Hokies, who totaled six blocks in the set win. The Hokies rallied from down five at 17-12 to claim the set two win, fueled by four blocks from freshman Sarah Malinowski. Tech held Notre Dame to a -.026 hitting percentage. Malinowski also had three kills in the set to lead Tech to the win. Also on the defensive end, Maddie Slage had six digs to help the Hokies cause. It depends on how they behave, on how they communicate, on how much they actually want to serve the community or serve their own self-interests or the interests of a few,” District 2 Councilor Julie Olson said in an interview. While the business of the county will go on no matter who is elected — primarily due to the qualified staff who “know what they’re doing,” Olson said — the actions of the council will impact residents. “The business of the county will continue. It’s just a matter of whether Clark County will be respected in our legislative community, be respected around the state, if we can actually be productive and professional as the work gets done,” Olson said. “And that all depends on the individuals and how they operate on a day-to-day basis.” Here are the races: District 1 The race is between Vancouver residents Glen Yung and Hector Hinojosa. Candidate Doug Coop was eliminated in the primary. Although both candidates have prior experience working with nonprofits and community organizations, and neither has served in an elected office, they offer different approaches to similar issues. Hinojosa, who is perhaps more widely known as one of the founders of the Southwest Washington League of United Latin American Citizens, says the county needs to do more to address homelessness. “Vancouver has been leading the way with that type of funding,” Hinojosa said during The Columbian’s editorial board meeting in July. Yung, who owns a residential remodeling company, said the county needs a holistic approach that incorporates homelessness, housing, law enforcement and more. Hinojosa’s top priorities include preserving agricultural lands, transportation and infrastructure needs, racial equity and climate change. Yung lists affordable housing, public safety and preserving the county’s natural resources as his top issues. District 2 Two former contenders for Vancouver Public Schools’ board are facing off in the race for the District 2 seat. Michelle Belkot and Chartisha Roberts, both of Vancouver, took the top two places in the August primary. Neither candidate has been elected to office previously. A third contender, Kim Hamlik, lost in the primary. Belkot is a 24-year veteran of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force and works as a civil servant. Roberts has worked in human resources for the past 13 years, primarily in the health care and transportation industries. Although both are working mothers, any similarities between the two candidates ends there. Belkot was a vocal critic of mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic and supported a mini-initiative to “ban discriminatory health mandates,” such as mask and vaccine requirements, that was ultimately voted down by the council in January. Belkot said there is a disconnect between residents and the county council. She lists public safety at the top of her priorities, along with homelessness and transportation. The top priorities for Roberts are homelessness, affordable housing and transportation. Both candidates put public safety among their top concerns, but they have different approaches. Roberts said her chief concern is making sure the sheriff’s office is adequately funded, but she also wants to make sure those funds are spent wisely, especially the newly passed public safety sales tax. Belkot was opposed to the public safety sales tax but does support increasing sheriff’s deputies’ pay, which she said lags behind the pay in other jurisdictions. District 5 Of all the candidates running for a county council seat, perhaps the two most dissimilar candidates are District 5’s Sue Marshall and Don Benton. Current District 5 Councilor Richard Rylander Jr. and former law enforcement officer Rick Torres were eliminated in the primary. Benton is certainly the more well known of the two. A former state lawmaker, state campaign manager for former President Donald Trump and one-time head of the U.S. Selective Service, Benton is now semi-retired and works for McKeon Group, a consulting and lobbying firm based in Alexandria, Va. While still serving in the state Senate, Benton was appointed as the county’s director of environmental services. His lack of experience in the field and bypass of the county’s civil service hiring process led to sharp criticism of both Benton and the county council. Benton was let go in 2016 following a departmental restructuring but later won a wrongful-termination lawsuit against the county. Marshall and her husband own and operate their family farm in rural Ridgefield. While she may live in a rural area and is a political newcomer, Marshall said she’s been involved in county business, especially land use and planning, for many years. Benton has made protecting property rights, rural economic development, reducing crime and addressing homelessness the cornerstones of his campaign. He has also pledged to never vote to raise property taxes and said raising taxes should always be a last option. With Clark County soon to begin updating the Comprehensive Growth Plan, due in 2025, Marshall has focused much of her campaign on land-use policies, but she also wants to address public safety and affordable housing. As I was reminded repeatedly, I would have no friends or family closer than a 10-hour drive. At 73, wasn’t I too old to pull up stakes? No, I explained. At 73, it was time to live my dream. In Chicago, my friends were three traffic jams away and my family had busy lives. The year my youngest grandchild got her driver’s license seemed the perfect time to trade in my aging granny-mobile for a more reliable car and find my dream place on the ocean. After selling my house, packing, buying a condo, and unpacking, I lay across my bed in my new condo, exhausted and depleted. “I could never do this again,” I moaned. I looked out my sliding glass doors at waves crashing on the sand and knew that if this was it, it was an “it” that suited me.  After 30 years of living alone, I cherish my single life, but everyone needs friends. In the friendly South, I figured that making friends would be easy. It turned out to be a project that took commitment and the ability to handle rejection without pouting. Here are my suggestions for making friends in a new town. Your local library offers more than books. See what activities they host. Photo credit: Carol Stigger 1. Get A Library Card In addition to borrowing books, movies, music, and museum, park, and event passes, libraries offer activities for a wide range of interests. I checked the library’s calendar of events. Craft lessons: Not for me. Book club: Not a fan of their selections. Line dancing: Why not! I made some fun acquaintances, but no solid friendships. Two years later, I found a meaningful way to fit into the library scene. I schedule writers for their monthly “Meet the Author” event. To do this, I have coffee with candidates, read their books, promote the events, and introduce the authors. It’s a great way to meet people who share my interest in books and writing. Visit Places Of Worship These are known to be friendly places, and you don’t have to be religious to participate in their activities. I chose the first church I visited because their sign said “The Friendly Church.” It should have said, “We will make you feel like wallpaper.” I am sure members are friendly among themselves, but they didn’t have a handle on “hospitality.” I signed up for one of their Bible studies and met some narrow-minded people, a few absolute jerks, and a woman who asked me if my Coach handbag was a knock-off. I told her the truth: “I shop at consignment stores.” Gasps were audible. The next church I visited is the one I joined, thanks to a woman I met at a fellowship dinner. “I live alone, too,” she said scrawling her name and phone number on a napkin. “Call me anytime you need to talk or a bowl of chicken soup. I don’t care if it is 2 a.m.” Her friends were just as hospitable, and I quickly made several friends I can depend on. In addition, the church has a near-professional music program with frequent, free concerts in the sanctuary and on the lawn. Pro Tip: Stay away from churches whose belief systems set your hair on fire. You don’t need those kinds of friends. 3. Hand Out Business Cards How many pounds of paper scraps with phone numbers scrawled on them are in landfills? I wouldn’t take a stab at that one, but I envision scraps with my phone number filling a yard waste bag. Now, I hand out business cards with my name, phone number, website, and motto: “Not all who wander are lost.” The line for “job title” was a puzzle. “Retired” sounded like I had given up. “Retired Teacher” would provoke controversial conversations I did not want to have. I settled on “Journalist,” which is a good conversation starter that I can steer in a comfortable direction.  Sometimes I’m a travel journalist (people love to talk about their travels). With receptive people, I’m a microfinance reporter, which opens the door to talking about my favorite way to help families in poor countries work out of poverty. You can leave that line blank or get a little personal. “Aspiring Golf Pro,” “Kitchen Magician,” “Star Gazer,” and “Globe Trotter” are a few ideas. Consider your interests and boil your favorite down to a few words. Pro Tips: Include a headshot on your business card. Don’t get glossy cards, because you can’t write on them. Consider Adopting A Rescue Dog Doctors advise, “Walk your dog every day, even if you don’t have a dog.” I’ve always had dogs, but I downsized from my beloved labs to a 10-pound Yorkie mix rescue dog named Harley (like the motorcycle). Such a little dog deserved a big name. I have not made one friend walking Harley up and down the beach, through parks, around lakes, and shopping centers. But, I’ve gathered hundreds of smiles and engaged in many casual conversations thanks to Harley. A cute, little dog is hard to resist. As I live in a vacation area, most people I encounter are happy, and their cheer is contagious. When I set out for a walk with Harley, sometimes I’m in low spirits. Thanks to exercise and cheerful greetings, I usually come home with a spring in my step and a smile on my face. If having a dog is incompatible with your living space or lifestyle, many animal shelters welcome volunteer dog walkers. You get all the benefits of walking a dog with none of the responsibilities. Harley uses his porch potty after dark when I’m asleep. Photo credit: Carol Stigger Pro Tip: I live in a condo with no elevator, so yard access requires navigating 30 stairs. Midnight doggie nature calls are hazardous for elderly people using stairs while half asleep, but I found a solution. A Porch Potty is perfect for a small dog, but I would not recommend it for a large dog. Harley’s porch potty has artificial grass and a plastic fireplug.  A year after my move, I had an interesting group of friends: a retired traveling nurse who scuba dived around the world; a cloistered nun who walked out of the convent after 10 years and married a Jewish man; a horse whisperer; a successful, imaginative entrepreneur; and several writers, to name a few. Before I had friends, the sticker shock in travel was not the plane fare, it was airport parking and dog boarding. A friend and I dog-sit for each other and time our trips accordingly. Because I need some sort of schedule, I joined a weekly brunch group on Tuesdays and Rummikube (gin rummy with tiles not cards) players on Saturday. My writers’ group meets weekly. Now, my calendar never has a bleak, blank look but allows enough time for that leisurely pace I dreamed of before I retired. Each person has their own social needs and finding that personal balance takes time and effort. It’s an enjoyable project and the rewards are satisfying.
