After Black Infant Mortality Surged In Kansas, Birth Workers Jumped Into Action – Lawrence Journal-World https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/after-black-infant-mortality-surged-in-kansas-birth-workers-jumped-into-action-lawrence-journal-world/ Wichita — Peggy Jones-Foxx knows what it takes to raise a baby. “It’s the hardest work I’ve ever done,” she said. “And I have a master’s degree.” At the Dellrose United Methodist Church in Wichita, she teaches pregnant women, particularly Black women, about that work — with the understanding that, statistically, their babies are less likely to live to see their first birthday than white children. So she coaches them on how to stay healthy during pregnancy: Are they taking their prenatal vitamins? Do they have strategies for managing stress? Do they know what resources exist if they need help buying healthy food? Jones-Foxx, who is president of the Wichita Black Nurses Association, lingers on a slide about the importance of communicating with their doctors. She tells the women to write down any questions they might have ahead of a checkup, and insist that they get answers. After all, she said, it can make a big difference when it comes to keeping Black mothers and their children alive. “Sometimes that can be pretty intimidating because we’re all a little shy when it comes to professionals,” she told her class. “They ask if you have any questions as they’re already walking out the door — but that’s your time to ask those questions that may be weighing on you.” These “Baby Talk” prenatal education classes represent a new partnership between the nurses association and the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita’s Center for Research for Infant and Birth Survival (CRIBS). The impetus? New data revealing that Black infant mortality in Kansas surged 58% in 2020. Now, 17 Black babies out of every thousand die before their first birthday — over three and a half times the rate of white babies. Of the 2,369 Black babies born in the state in 2020, 40 died in their first year. “I hope to be able to, one by one, shift those numbers for young mothers in the state of Kansas,” Jones-Foxx said. The classes are part of a multi-pronged effort by the Center for Research for Infant Birth and Survival, or CRIBS, in response to the increase. The center also runs an in-home visitation program for young families. Director Cari Schmidt said it’s trying to secure funding for research that would help the center better understand the causes of sudden unexpected infant death. “As long as there is a disparity” between white and Black infant mortality, she said, “we clearly haven’t done everything we can do.” Public health experts are still trying to understand why Kansas saw so many babies die during the first year of the pandemic when infant mortality dropped slightly in the U.S. overall. Most suspect the virus has something to do with it — whether from direct impacts to fetal development or stress from job loss and isolation. Sharla Smith, a University of Kansas professor who directs the Kansas Birth Equity Network, said both of those experiences were more common in Black communities: Black people were more likely to catch COVID-19 and they tended to feel the pandemic’s vast economic fallout more acutely. “All of this has just contributed to the stress on the Black body,” she said. Focusing on the health of Black mothers will be crucial to addressing Black infant mortality going forward, she said. In part, that’s because of racial differences in why babies die in Kansas. While white and Hispanic infant mortality is most commonly caused by birth defects, Black infant deaths more frequently stem from complications related to being born too early and underweight. Premature birth can be caused by a host of factors, including a pregnant woman’s preexisting health issues and challenges accessing prenatal care. Smith said both can stem from bias and systemic racism within the medical field. Research shows doctors are less likely to diagnose Black women with endometriosis or refer them for cardiac treatment and are more likely to ignore their pain. “This is not just about getting an appointment,” she said. “Black women are just not heard.” Researchers say poverty can play a role in infant mortality too, but it’s far from the only reason. A 1992 study found that a stark infant mortality gap existed between babies born to Black and white parents even when both were college-educated. Among that group, Black babies were nearly twice as likely to die as white babies. “If you’re only saying it’s poverty, then you’re missing a huge piece of this,” said Michelle Redmond, a KU professor and Smith’s collaborator at the Kansas Birth Equity Network. “You really have to look at what we define as social determinants of health — it’s social, environmental, economic, educational.” A few miles away in North Wichita, Sapphire Garcia-Lies is trying to tackle those factors through the Kansas Birth Justice Society, a nonprofit that serves Black, Latino and Native American families. Its approach is holistic, focused on improving both maternal and infant health. “We can’t separate the two,” said Garcia-Lies, who founded the center during the pandemic. “They’re two sides of the exact same coin.” That means providing supplies that low-income families might struggle to buy. The building houses a room stacked floor-to-ceiling with free diapers and baby clothes, a community fridge, and a lending library full of books about the birthing experiences of women and queer people of color. There’s also a meditation room and a meeting area for parent support circles. And the organization is recruiting and training lactation consultants of color — a first for Wichita. “This is the first space in the Wichita area that has lactation consultants of color on staff,” said Garcia-Lies. “Because people need culturally affirming care. They need to feel like they belong.” The goal is to help Black, Native American and Latino families, who breastfeed at lower rates than white and Asian families, continue breastfeeding past the newborn stage — which research indicates is correlated with a lower risk of infant death. “It provides protection from infectious diseases and sudden infant death syndrome,” said Lisette Jacobson, a KU professor who studies the relationship between breastfeeding and infant health. “To optimize those benefits, you want to be exclusively breastfeeding for at least six months.” For families of color, meeting that target often involves navigating more roadblocks than white families do. “Lots of times, the biggest obstacle is that they have to go back to work really early,” Garcia-Lies said. “For some of them, it’s two weeks or less after they give birth.” This year, the Kansas Birth Justice Society will pair around 75 families with doulas who’ll support them throughout pregnancy, birth and infancy. That can involve advocating for patients during doctor’s visits and ensuring they aren’t pressured into medical interventions in the delivery room, like labor induction or C-sections. It’s an issue close to Garcia-Lies’ heart. She lost her second daughter to miscarriage in 2013 after, she said, a doctor brushed aside red flags she’d brought up about the pregnancy. “By the time I went for a second opinion, she had passed away,” she said. “I was full-term. We were days from her due date.” “And it didn’t just happen to me — it’s continuing to happen all the time.” Now, she works so that fewer families have to go through that heartbreak. Reducing racial disparities around infant mortality, she said, requires community-driven support for Black and brown families in a world that’s hostile to them. “We know that as soon as they walk outside these four walls, they’re going to face all the same things that they walked in with,” she said. “But when they’re here, we love on them and we nurture them. And we try to make sure that everyone who walks through those doors understands that they matter.” — Rose Conlon reports for Kansas News Service.

Dodgers Vs. Padres Score: Live Updates From NLDS Game 4 As San Diego Looks To Close – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dodgers-vs-padres-score-live-updates-from-nlds-game-4-as-san-diego-looks-to-close-cbs-sports/ The Dodgers and Padres are heading toward the ninth inning …  See New Posts Pinned The 111-win Los Angeles Dodgers were eliminated by the San Diego Padres in Game 4 of the National League Division Series Saturday night.  The struggling Dodger offense broke through with some much-needed timely hitting in the third inning to take the 2-0 lead that grew to 3-0 with a “small ball” seventh inning. Dodgers starter Tyler Anderson worked five scoreless frames, and then the Dodger bullpen took it from there. On offense. Freddie Freeman tallied three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Mookie Betts reached base four times and scored two runs. But the Padres stormed back with five runs, and won 5-3. Pinned The Padres eliminate the Dodgers Wow. Unbelievable series. The 111-Dodgers are out. The Phillies and Padres are in the NLCS.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Two down Freddie Freeman to the plate. The season after he won the World Series with the Braves and left them. And they were eliminated today, too.  Pinned Hader Ks Betts One down.  Pinned Josh Hader on for Padres Only three teams in MLB history won more games in the regular season than the 2022 Dodgers. If Hader gets three outs before the Dodgers score two runs, their season will be over. High drama in San Diego.  Pinned Pinned Pinned that’s a five-run inning Cronenworth singles to plate two more. It’s 5-3 Padres. The 111-win Dodgers won more games than all but three teams in the history of this, our baseball. They are six outs away from elimination before the NLCS.  Pinned Hoooooooooly Pinned Pinned pitching change With a 1-0 count, the Dodgers are going to Alex Vesia. He’s been one of their best relievers all season. You could argue he (a lefty) should have faced Soto, actually.  Pinned Oooo a mid-at-bat pitching change. Pinned Houdini act on tap?  After the Soto single tied it, Almonte got Machado on a strikeout and induced a Drury foul out (on a very nice play by Freddie Freeman, by the way). Though it’s obviously bad the lead has been blown, getting out of this with a tie would be huge for the Dodgers, so long as we start with the score being tied as our perspective.  Pinned Pinned WE ARE TIED Soto with a line drive single to RF. Tie game. And it’s first and third with no out for the NL MVP candidate Manny Machado. No place to put him.  Pinned This right here is why you trade for Juan Soto. Pinned Pinned Kim is such a fun player. I love him. Pinned Kim doubles down the line!  It’s 3-2 Dodgers and runners are on second and third with no out for Juan Soto. Manny Machado is on deck. Wow.  Pinned Yency Almonte on to try and clean up this mess for the Dodgers Pinned Pinned oh boy, here we go … Nola with a grounder that glances off Freddie Freeman’s glove as an infield single. It’s 3-1 now with runners on first and second with no out for Ha-Seong Kim with Juan Soto and Manny Machado looming.  Pinned Padres threatening Jurickson Profar walks and Trent Grisham singles to center and the Padres are in business here in the bottom of the seventh. Austin Nola and then the top of the order with no out.  Pinned Pinned Sac fly for Smith Not a hit, but Will Smith with the productive out to make it 3-0 Dodgers. That’s the first run off the Padres bullpen in this series. It feels like we’ll be watching these two teams again tomorrow night.  Pinned Boat race coming?  Trea Turner with a perfect bunt and Freddie Freeman hit with a pitch. The bases are loaded with no out.  Pinned Dodgers have another baserunner in front of their boppers Leadoff man Mookie Betts has a leadoff walk in the seventh. Will he be stranded?  See More

3 Newly-Launched Earphones On Fit, Comfort, Style And Sound, Including The New Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Gen – NYLON SINGAPORE – NYLON SINGAPORE https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/3-newly-launched-earphones-on-fit-comfort-style-and-sound-including-the-new-apple-airpods-pro-2nd-gen-nylon-singapore-nylon-singapore/ It’s worth upgrading your earphones now if you’ve had them for a while. The second generation of the AirPods Pro came out a few weeks ago, and just before that, Huawei launched their competing version, the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2. We tested each of them out for fit, comfort and sound. Read on. Apple AirPods Pro 2nd Generation Above: Apple AIRPODS PRO (2nd generation) It’s been almost three years since the launch of the original AirPods Pro. This second generation version improves on everything such as having a H2 chip (more efficient!), better Active Noise Cancellation (it’s said to be double the noise cancelled compared to the original AirPods Pro), Touch Control (more intuitive), and Personalised Spatial Audio — an extension of Apple’s Spatial Audio, and a feature that’s supposed to precisely tune the surround sound experience to the user’s ears. The Personalised Spatial Audio feature is interesting; it uses the TrueDepth camera on the iPhone to capture the shape of the user’s ear, and then tuning and optimising the audio to suit that ear. The sound is supposed to be more full and immersive. This customisation works differently from the NURATRUE earbuds that use sound waves to map the ear. Above: it’s the same sized case as the 1st generation airpods pro, so you can reuse your favourite existing case cover. Sound: Full, rich, with a strong and clear bass. Music sounds delightful to listen to. Noise Cancelling: Noise cancelling is powerful. It silences the outside so the focus really is on the music. There’s a useful transparency mode, which blends in surrounding sound so you’re not totally unaware when crossing the road. Design: It’s sleek — after all, it’s an Apple design. The case is small and handy and has the same dimensions as the first generation AirPods Pro, so you can reuse your existing case covers. Comfort & Fit: There are four silicone ear tips with M fitted on as standard out of the box. The earbuds sit in the ear nicely and feel secure. There’s no need to fiddle with the angle of it in the ear since it’s obvious which way faces down. Controls: It’s a swipe up swipe down touch control on each of the earbuds. It’s intuitive to use and you’ll likely get it right on your first try. Wireless Charging: Yes. Just place the case on any MagSafe charger, Apple Watch charger, or Qi-certified charger. Battery Life: Up to 6 hours listening time on a single charge, and up to 30 hours with the MagSafe Charging Case. Price: $359, available at apple.com. Above: the earbuds are ergonomically shaped. NYLON’s Recommendation: It’s quite a step up from the standard AirPods and even the first generation AirPods Pro. It’s worth getting if you’re an audiophile and really enjoy listening to your music while on the go; plus if you own an iPhone. Because pairing and connecting to Apple devices is instant; just open the case and you’ll be prompted to pair your gadgets together. You can switch easily between Apple devices as well — it’s the Apple ecosystem at work. Overall, the audio experience really is excellent; I’d save up and spring for these as a travel essential. Above: (left to right) Apple AIRPODS PRO (2nd generation) and AIRPODS (3rd generation). Above: the Apple AIRPODS PRO (2nd generation) earbuds vs. the AIRPODS (3rd generation) earbuds. Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 Above: Huawei FREEBUDS PRO 2 in ceramic white. So out of the box, these look really similar to Apple’s AirPods Pro, with the small design differences being a rounder case, and flatter earphone arms. I could pair this easily with the iPhone by pressing the “sync” button on the side of the charging case (you have to really look for it, I promise you, it’s there), and  once it’s paired by Bluetooth, the connection is pretty seamless. Above: Huawei freebuds pro 2 earbuds. Sound: Volume levels are louder than the AirPods Pro; these would work great for those who love to blast their music, and the audio doesn’t crack at all at these high levels. Quality of the audio is decent. It’s not as clear as what the AirPods Pro produces, but you do get more bass — and it can go louder. Noise Cancelling: Good noise cancelling, but not as powerful as the feature on the AirPods Pro. But do you really need to create a sound vacuum in your ear? Do you? That’s up to you and your wallet. Design: Can’t go wrong with this all-white design. The larger black accents on the sides of the earbuds work too and make this one stylish little gadget. This also comes in Silver Frost and Silver Blue colour options. Comfort & Fit: These feel like they sit in the ear more securely than the AirPods Pro — like they won’t fall out as easily. But that also means that you can “feel” these more in the ear. With the AirPods Pro, it’s like they aren’t even there. Good and bad. Controls: Controls are meant to straightforward with a swipe up and down to change volume and a squeeze and press to pause and play. On my first try, I couldn’t tell where the sensors were and got frustrated trying to get my music to play. It’s not terribly intuitive and could definitely be better. Wireless Charging: Yes, with any Qi-certified charger. Strangely, it wouldn’t charge with my MagSafe charger. Battery Life: Up to 4 hours listening time on a single charge with ANC enabled, and up to 18 hours with the charging case. With ANC off, you get up to 6.5 hours on a single charge, and up to 30 hours with the case. Price: $298, available on Shopee. NYLON’s Recommendation: This is a good $61 less than the AirPods Pro, plus Shopee always has some promotion going on (the earphones are $273 at the time of writing). It’s not an “AirPods Pro killer” as some other reviews have called it, but both products are appealing in their own way. Get the Apple one if you’re an iPhone user, and get this Huawei version if you want to save a bit of money and don’t need a fancy case cover for it (most earbuds case covers are made for the AirPods line). It’s not a bad choice at all, considering you can choose the cool Silver Frost (dark grey) or Silver Blue (pale blue) colour options this is available in. Jabra Elite 5 Above: Jabra ELITE 5 in Gold Beige. I’ve always liked Jabra earphones. They are comfortable, feel secure, look good, and sound pretty good too for its price. The Elite 5 came out not too long ago last month and is positioned as an all-rounder that’s good for listening to media or taking calls. Above: Jabra elite 5 earbuds. Sound: Just when I thought that the Huawei FreeBuds Pro 2 was bassy, along come these Jabras that take it up another notch. The sound is full and feels like it’s pumping — which makes this great for workouts! Music and audio isn’t as clear and nuanced as the AirPods Pro, so if you’re getting earphones just for the listening pleasure of music, consider forking out more for the ones from Apple. Noise Cancelling: There’s ANC and it works well, but it’s not as powerful as noise cancelling with the new AirPods Pro. Design: I really love the earbud design; it’s compact and looks beautiful when worn (especially this Gold Beige version). I do like the matte finish as well, which sets it apart from many earbuds in the market now. This comes in a full black version too, which is very sleek. Comfort & Fit: These fit so snugly in the ear, I have no fear of them dropping out. Undoubtedly, they’d be the pair I’d take when I go jogging. They are extremely comfortable too! It feels very satisfying popping these in. Controls: Just to be sure how the controls work, I read the instructions, and once I knew, I knew. It’s not hard at all to operate these; the earbuds are controlled with the large button on the flat end that faces out, which is very convenient. Wireless Charging: Yes, with any Qi-certified charger. It charges standing up rather than lying flat on its side. Tried it with a MagSafe charger and yes it charges with it. Battery Life: Up to 7 hours with ANC on, and up to 28 hours with the case. Price: $228, available on Shopee. NYLON’s Recommendation: I’d be less “precious” with these earbuds than the glossier versions from Apple and Huawei. I’d take these running and on the airplane, and I’d appreciate the longer battery life that it offers. It took me a while to figure out how to pair it with the iPhone (press and hold both top buttons on the earbuds to trigger the sync mode), but once I got them connected, there have been no hiccups. If you don’t need to wear a “branded” pair of earphones (eg. Apple), or just don’t like those “drop-down” arm designs, these earbuds are for you. Sound is good, connection is stable, it fits nicely, so all is well.

Bank Of America’s Survey Of Wealthy Americans: Younger People Are 7.5 Times More Likely To Hold Crypto In Their Portfolios – Featured Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bank-of-americas-survey-of-wealthy-americans-younger-people-are-7-5-times-more-likely-to-hold-crypto-in-their-portfolios-featured-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Bank of America has found that younger wealthy Americans are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios than investors aged 43 and older. “If the youngest cohort isn’t confident in stocks, where do they see opportunities for investment growth? Alternatives, including cryptocurrencies, which are their No. 1 choice,” the bank wrote. Young Wealthy Americans Prefer Cryptocurrencies to Stocks Bank of America released its 2022 Private Bank Study of Wealthy Americans this week. The report highlights the results of an online survey, conducted from May to June, of 1,052 people who were over the age of 21 with household investable assets of more than $3 million. The bank noted that the respondents are a nationally representative sample of the U.S. high-net-worth population and not necessarily clients of Bank of America. “Conventional investment advice suggests that younger investors hold more stocks, not fewer, than older investors. Yet the 21 to 42 age group holds just a quarter of their portfolio in stocks, compared with 55% of investors aged 43 and older,” the report details, noting: If the youngest cohort isn’t confident in stocks, where do they see opportunities for investment growth? Alternatives, including cryptocurrencies, which are their No. 1 choice. “While 29% of younger people said crypto presents a leading opportunity to create wealth, only 7% of the older group agreed. The younger group is generally more interested in private equity or debt, as well as sustainable or environmental, social and governance (ESG)-related investments,” the report adds. Bank of America emphasized that age is “the dominant factor when it comes to interest in cryptocurrencies,” elaborating: While overall usage is low, younger people are 7.5 times more likely to hold crypto in their portfolios and five times more likely to say they understand it quite well. Furthermore, the survey found that “Half of the younger group said they turn to social media for guidance on crypto, compared with 30% of the older group.” What do you think about the findings by Bank of America? Odelyn Joseph/AP hide caption toggle caption Odelyn Joseph/AP Protesters calling for the resignation of Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry run after police fired tear gas to disperse them in the Delmas area of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Monday, Oct. 10, 2022. Odelyn Joseph/AP SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — The U.S. and Canada sent armored vehicles and other supplies to Haiti on Saturday to help police fight a powerful gang amid a pending request from the Haitian government for the immediate deployment of foreign troops. A U.S. State Department statement said the equipment was bought by Haiti’s government, but it did not provide further details on the supplies flown on military aircraft to the capital of Port-au-Prince. A spokesman for the U.S. military’s Southern Command said he could not provide further details on the supplies sent, though he added it was a joint operation involving the U.S. Air Force and Royal Canadian Air Force. “This equipment will assist (Haiti’s National Police) in their fight against criminal actors who are fomenting violence and disrupting the flow of critically-needed humanitarian assistance, hindering efforts to halt the spread of cholera,” the State Department said. The Pan American Health Organization said there are more than 560 suspected cases of cholera, some 300 hospitalizations and at least 35 deaths, with experts warning the numbers are likely much higher than what i’s being reported. The equipment arrived more than a month after one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs surrounded a fuel terminal and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Demonstrators also have blocked roads in major cities to protest a sharp rise in fuel prices after Henry announced in early September that his administration could no longer afford to subsidize fuel. Since then, gas stations have closed, hospitals have cut back on services and banks and grocery stores open on a limited basis as fuel, water and other supplies dwindle across Haiti. The owners of the fuel terminal announced Saturday that armed men had attacked their installations for a second time and fled with more than 28,000 gallons of petroleum products after overpowering surveillance and emergency personnel at the facility. It was the second time this week that armed men broke into the terminal, which stores more than 10 million gallons of gasoline and diesel and more than 800,000 gallons of kerosene.

Omaha Man Pleads No Contest To Misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide – Longview News-Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/omaha-man-pleads-no-contest-to-misdemeanor-motor-vehicle-homicide-longview-news-journal/ OMAHA — A 21-year-old Omaha man pleaded no contest Friday to misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide in the March death of an Omaha mother. Family and friends of the victim maintained their disappointment that he was not charged with a felony.  Jonathan McDougald faces up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine when he’s sentenced in January by Douglas County Judge Jeffrey Marcuzzo.   Authorities said McDougald was angry and went on a drive March 12, driving 66 mph when his car collided with an SUV driven by 35-year-old Regina Bright. Bright was driving near 42nd and Grover streets, which is a 35 mph zone. At some points in McDougald’s drive, officials said, he sped up to 90 mph.  Regina Bright McDougald, driving a Chevrolet Impala, was southbound on 42nd Street when his car struck Bright’s Jeep Compass, which was northbound on 42nd Street and turning left into a gas station. The force of the impact caused the Jeep to hit a utility pole, rotate clockwise and land on its driver’s side. Bright was pronounced dead at the scene.  Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said in August that he determined a misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide charge was appropriate because McDougald was simply speeding. “The courts have determined that excessive speed, without other factors, is not enough to make it a felony,” he said.  A handful of family and friends of Bright who appeared at the hearing Friday said that’s not enough.  Veronica Bright, Bright’s mother, said she thinks that reckless speeding that causes someone’s death should be a felony. She wants to make her case to state legislators to change the law.  “We pretty much have to leave it in the hands of the court and hope that this judge is fair,” she said. “Reckless driving should be a felony. Whether he was drunk or not, it should be a felony.” Bright left behind two children, ages 15 and 14. Veronica Bright, who wore a T-shirt with her daughter’s photo on it and a button with her birth and death dates, said her daughter was generous and kind. “Gina was honestly all about love and laughter and hope and bringing people together. That was Gina,” she said. “I never met anybody who didn’t like Gina.” Friends Yolanda Delts and Precious Clark, who met Bright in the sixth and 10th grades, respectively, said they don’t feel that McDougald has shown remorse. They also worry about what message the case sends to reckless drivers.  “We just feel like, if he gets off of this, it opens the door for other young people to think that they can be mad and angry and go out,” Clark said. “And just because you weren’t drunk or under the influence does not give you a right to not be able to handle your emotions and go out and drive and be reckless and careless.” Top Journal Star photos for October The basketball courts at Antelope Park went from gray to filled with color this fall. Maui Visitors And Residents Square Off Starting Here Beat Of Hawaii
Maui Visitors And Residents Square Off Starting Here – Beat Of Hawaii https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/maui-visitors-and-residents-square-off-starting-here-beat-of-hawaii/ Maui has great resorts and many of them. It also has a large and much-improved airport, and the Valley Isle succeeded in attracting the most flights (including widebody) to Hawaii of any airport other than Honolulu. But now it has clearly become too much of a good thing. So what happens next and will there ever be a way to make everyone happy? We’re focusing today on what is happening at some of the iconic Maui beaches, as well as in Lahaina, Wailuku, and soon thereafter, Hana. In the next few months, Maui will implement substantial visitor-only parking fees and limit hours of visitor parking entirely, at a range of popular beaches. The final start date of early 2023 is still being devised together with some further specifics outlined below. Is it the money or the idea that stings visitors the worst? We’ve had hundreds of comments about the plans for paid beach parking on Maui, and they have included various ideas. Residents say they can no longer park at these locations because the parking is overcrowded with tourists. Tourists are incensed that they will need to pay up to $30 for beach day parking. Others have mentioned that if you can afford to come to Maui, the $30 means nothing. Whether free parking is extended to Hawaii residents other than Maui County is not yet resolved. Comments have mentioned that charging a $30 flat rate encourages visitors to park for an extended period. In contrast, paid hourly parking (such as at Honolulu Zoo, for example) encourages those parking to leave sooner and make space available for others. $30 beach parking for visitors. $0 for Maui residents. The price range for parking may vary by location, season, and other variables yet to be set forth. The citations for violating the new parking rules also have not been announced. The county locations included in the initial roll-outs include the following. These were confirmed last week by Maui County Council’s Vice-Chair. The county said these locations were chosen partly because of the ease of implementing parking kiosks. Kamaole Beach Park I Kamaole Beach Park II Kamaole Beach Park III Ulua Beach Other locations being discussed, likely with hourly rates: Paia Town Hana Town Lahaina Town Wailuku Town The parking website says Maui’s “new parking management program strives to implement forward-thinking solutions for parking at beach parks, in business districts, and on streets throughout our island’s most heavily utilized areas.” The theory. “When parking demand clusters in certain areas, parking policies can mitigate congestion and improve access. Strategic investments in technology will streamline parking management and transform parking into a customer-friendly component of the overall transportation system.” I‍n other words, start charging now in the worst areas; raise prices as demand dictates until the desired reduction in vehicles occurs, then expand the program incrementally as quickly as feasible. Why now? Maui has more than 3 million visitors a year. The sheer magnitude and the lack of adequate infrastructure mean residents cannot easily access the island’s parks and beaches. PARKMAUI says, “Lahaina and Paia have become so unpleasant for residents to find parking, many have stopped going, and Wailuku has long suffered from a parking shortage.” It’s been nearly a decade that the Valley Isle has been looking for ways to better manage congestion, initially in Wailuku and Lahaina. Subsequently, it became clear that the effort should be greatly expanded to include most beaches and parks. Much like on Maui, beaches on Oahu and Kauai find themselves simply without parking much of the time. Examples are Kailua and Lanikai beaches on Oahu, Tunnels Beach, and Hanalei Beach on Kauai. Highlights of the new parking program: Maui County residents who register will have free parking at Maui’s parks and beaches at all times, as well as 1-2 hours of free parking and/or discounted parking in Lahaina and Wailuku. ‍Non-residents must pay for parking at Maui’s parks and beaches and in those two towns. Parking passes will be available online or via mobile app or pay stations. It sounds like the app may not be available at the program’s roll-out. Thus kiosk-based payments may be visitors only option. The program hopes to be financially sustainable, reinvesting the revenue into various, unspecified County resources and programs. State parks and beaches are not included. Hawaii state beaches, including Makena Beach and Waianapanapa Beach, are subject to state rules and fees and not those from the county. Waianapanapa State Park, for example, charges $5 per person plus $10 per vehicle. New PARKMAUI program. What is your take on Maui’s visitor parking plan? Since your editors are residents of Kauai County, we, like mainland visitors, may be subject to these new fees. We’ll have to give it thought before paying $30 for beach parking at Kam III on the next trip to Maui. Pilot paid parking at Maui beaches. Maui’s Ulua beach and Kamaole I, II, and III Beaches will have parking equipment installed. This will be evaluated during the first 90 days of operation, and changes may be made subsequently to enhance the program. After that, paid visitor parking is planned “throughout South and West Maui beach park locations as timing, funding and permitting allows.” Pilot paid parking at Lahaina and Wailuku towns. In Lahaina and Wailuku, visitors compete with employees and residents for limited parking. Additional small-town parking fees will be implemented as soon as possible. The announcement of the final plans is forthcoming. Next week the Maui County Council’s Infrastructure and Transportation Committee plans to meet to finalize the terms of the measure. We just learned that residents might initially be able to insert driver’s licenses into the kiosks as proof of residency.  Later, the app will be rolled out and will offer pre-registration for parking. The app is said to advise on parking conditions so that users can know in advance whether or not parking is likely to be available. A new “parking ambassador” rule is being designed for those who will be handling parking enforcement. What’s your take on Maui’s parking plans? Leinster Star’s Move From Back Row To Zambrero Burrito – Independent.ie https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/leinster-stars-move-from-back-row-to-zambrero-burrito-independent-ie/ Mexican-inspired fast food restaurant Zambrero is on track to expand from 13 to 20 restaurants across Ireland over the next year, with a number of new openings imminent. he healthy eating focused fast-food restaurant opened its 13th Irish restaurant in Blackrock, Co Dublin, this month and is now expecting even further growth. Zambrero Ireland general manager Darragh Fanning, who first brought the concept from Australia in 2015, is a former professional Leinster rugby player who attracted franchise partners around the country after his unlikely trajectory into Ireland’s booming casual dining sector. “We have Liffey Valley opening in November, Maynooth in January and we’ve heads of terms agreed for another few early next year and another few well advanced in the pipeline,” he said. “We’ve grown well in the last couple of years and that doesn’t look like slowing.” Fanning went to school in St Mary’s College in Rathmines where he was a year behind Johnny Sexton: “He was my captain and after that I played professionally for Connaght. It was going really well in the first year. We played Munster on St Stephen’s Day. Two days later my appendix ruptured and I missed the second half of the season.” His professional contract fell through and he moved to Australia and played semi-professionally for a year: “When I came back to Dublin I thought I had missed the boat in rugby. I was enjoying playing for Marys again but Joe Schmidt spotted me and it just went crazy from there.” He played on the wing for Leinster for three years, loving every minute. But having turned 30 in 2016, when the end came, it was swift and brutal. “Training had gone very well during the week. But [Coach] Leo [Cullen] rang me and said ‘you won’t be on the bench or travelling this weekend.’ That was it. I hung up the phone and broke down crying. My dad took over as my agent and negotiated my exit. I signed the offer on a Thursday and then flew to Barcelona for a stag. But in the end I walked away happy. Playing for Leinster had been a childhood dream.” For more than a year he had been quietly cooking up another plan. Two weeks after leaving Leinster he opened the first Irish Zambrero in Dublin’s Hatch Street. That only happened because he had put the plan into action long before he left rugby. In fact, the idea to bring the brand had originally started while living in Australia. Fanning had helped an old St Mary’s friend, Sean McCarthy, open two Zambrero franchise restaurants in Northern Queensland. He returned to Ireland and reconnected with McCarthy at a wedding a few years later, in 2014. His friend now had 30 outlets and had a business development remit with the chain. Although he was playing for Leinster, he proposed to Fanning that he bring Zambrero to Ireland. “I made a quick decision and said yes. It started slowly, meeting suppliers and property agents after training. It took about 17 months to get Hatch Street open in 2016. It couldn’t have happened if I hadn’t met Niall O’Connor, our operations manager. He came with great experience and has been brilliant.” With three company-owned stores opened and a supply chain established, they were allowed to franchise the brand. “Our first franchise opened five years ago and it was always about getting that first person to trust you and make the leap. Franchisees could be investing €250,000-plus in a restaurant so they have to put their faith in me making the whole thing a success. That trust is what drives me on. There is no point opening a load of unsuccessful restaurants. But things are going great. September was a record month for us and I think October will be a record again.” Today, Zambrero is hosting its first ever meal-packing event to mark World Hunger Day. With the help of over 100 volunteers, Zambrero Ireland aims to pack 30,000 nutritious meals which will be donated to people in need in developing countries.

The Trojans enter as one of two undefeated Pac-12 teams and a darkhorse contender for the College Football Playoff nearly midway through the 2022 season, but it’s the Utes that won this matchup a year ago and are now looking to defend their conference championship. USC beat Washington State 30-14 last week behind 149 yards and a touchdown from running back Travis Dye to reach bowl eligibility in coach Lincoln Riley’s first season. Wide receiver Mario Williams had a pair of touchdowns in the content and continues his tremendous connection with star quarterback Caleb Williams. Utah, meanwhile, lost its second game of the season against No. 11 UCLA after giving up six touchdowns in a 42-32 loss. While admitting that it is hard for him to understand why crypto has value, the former executive believes that 50 years from now, crypto could be “a huge way that monetary transactions take place.” Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack on Bitcoin and Crypto Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack talked about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in an interview with CNBC Thursday. Mack was the CEO of the global investment bank from June 2005 to January 2010. Responding to a question about whether he currently owns bitcoin, he confirmed: “I do. Yes.” He further shared: Through my family office, we have some outright positions in crypto. The former Morgan Stanley executive also discussed whether Wall Street will become completely digitized in the future. “I don’t think it goes away but I think it changes dramatically,” he said. “Take crypto, it’s hard for me to understand why it has value,” Mack continued, adding: Fifty years from now maybe that will be a huge way that monetary transactions take place. It’s easy to wire. You don’t have to worry about putting in a bank. It’s on a computer. The former Morgan Stanley executive opined: “You gotta make sure it’s insulated, protected, and no one can break into it. Fifty years from now, I think things will be even more electronic and driven more and more by input from humans in the computers on how to trade, how to take risks, and make sure they don’t go over their limits.” Mack has been investing in crypto for many years. In July 2017, he told Bloomberg while discussing his investment in crypto startup Omega One: “I have been watching and investing in the cryptocurrency market over the last several years.” Regarding Omega One, he said at the time that he finds the company “to be an important next step in the emergence of this new economy … making crypto assets cheaper and easier to access.” What do you think about the comments by former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack? The Last Of Us Fan Shares Gorgeous Astronaut Ellie Tattoo – GameRant https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-last-of-us-fan-shares-gorgeous-astronaut-ellie-tattoo-gamerant/ A fan of The Last of Us shares their beautiful tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet inspired by a touching moment from The Last of Us 2. A fan of The Last of Us shared a gorgeous astronaut Ellie tattoo. Ellie’s infatuation with the world prior to the infection represents one of the more wholesome characteristics of The Last of Us, which includes her love of outer space. The Last of Us has inspired all kinds of fan creations, such as a life-like Clicker mask from one fan, and illustrations that celebrate moments from the game’s story. Even so, nothing is as permanent as a tattoo to showcase one’s adoration, especially one that is as breathtaking as this one. Fans getting tattoos inspired by this series is not new, such as an incredible The Last of Us Clicker tattoo, or one that pays homage to the giraffe scene. This specific tattoo is more like the latter, in the sense that it reflects the wholesome elements of the series and characters in a way that fans can appreciate. Crossikki shared a photo of their Last of Us tattoo of Ellie wearing an astronaut helmet on Reddit. The tattoo is in a black and white minimalist illustrative style, shaded with stippling to highlight details like Ellie’s backpack and wrinkles in her jeans. Fans can also spot a Firefly symbol on Ellie’s astronaut helmet, which can be interpreted in different ways considering Ellie’s relationship with the Fireflies in the first and second games. The great thing about tattoos like this one is that they’re mostly only recognizable to the fan-base. Because of that, it is presented as both a meaningful moment to connect players to the game and a breathtaking piece of art that newcomers can enjoy, and potentially even entice them to play. Ellie herself sports a tattoo in The Last of Us 2 that could inspire players in the same way, and the Last of Us tattoo was used for a PS5. In The Last of Us 2, there is a flashback chapter of Joel leading Ellie to an abandoned museum on her birthday, showcasing Ellie’s excitement and child-like innocence when interacting with different exhibits on dinosaurs, history, and space. The tattoo is inspired by a specific moment where Joel surprises Ellie with a replica spaceship, an astronaut helmet, and a cassette tape that Ellie used to imagine herself as an astronaut taking off for space. This iconic moment has inspired not only tattoos but also beautiful The Last of Us illustrations that reflect what is so great about the seriES, and why it has touched so many. The Last of Us Part 1 is available on PS5 and coming to PC. MORE: What God of War Can Learn From The Last of Us’ Character Swapping

IBM Hopes Autonomous Vessel Technology Can Make Waves In Ship Market – TweakTown https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ibm-hopes-autonomous-vessel-technology-can-make-waves-in-ship-market-tweaktown/ Tech giant IBM expects its autonomous ship artificial intelligence technology used by commercial and research ships one day. The software is able to optimize decision-making by simulating different alternative choices and identifying possible issues while a ship is on the ocean. 2 VIEW GALLERY – 2 IMAGES Earlier in 2022, the unmanned Mayflower Autonomous Ship (MAS) traveled 3,500 unmanned miles from Plymouth, United Kingdom to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The Atlantic Ocean crossing took 40 days and featured no human ship captain or onboard crew as it made the journey. Since naval companies tend to be slower to newer trends, fully autonomous ships probably won’t happen for quite some time – but an AI-powered first officer might prove useful. The majority of marine accidents tend to involve human error, so autonomous software might be able to help a human captain make critical decisions. Non-profit group ProMare designed and built MAS, and IBM supported the project with its AI and automation technology. MAS features 6 AI-powered cameras, 15 Edge devices, and more than 30 seconds that feed into the AI Captain to guide decision-making. Even though this technology looks promising, it still had some glaring issues during the Mayflower’s first open tests. It was noted the first run in 2021 saw the AI work efficiently, but there were mechanical issues, such as when an exhaust system pipe sheared and damaged the generator. And the problems only piled on, as noted by Andy Stanford-Clark, master inventor and CTO for IBM UK, in a statement published by IoT World Today: “And the second one, we had two problems − one was that an isolator switch failed in the open position which disconnected the generator from the battery pack, so we couldn’t charge the batteries. And the other one, we lost the main navigation computer, which is why we ended up going to Halifax. Luckily, we had a spare, but we only had one spare.” This type of technology will need much more time before any manufacturers or shipping companies want to jump on board. However, there are definitely possible uses to help augment staffing on ships or used to help a captain make decisions while in control. Introduction of the MAS and its AI and automation power:

Omaha Man Pleads No Contest To Misdemeanor Motor Vehicle Homicide – Lincoln Journal Star https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/omaha-man-pleads-no-contest-to-misdemeanor-motor-vehicle-homicide-lincoln-journal-star/ OMAHA — A 21-year-old Omaha man pleaded no contest Friday to misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide in the March death of an Omaha mother. The Régie De Courances: A Royal Family-Friendly Cottage 1 Hour From Paris – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-regie-de-courances-a-royal-family-friendly-cottage-1-hour-from-paris-forbes/ Alexis Armanet Head to the Essone département in the Ile de France region close to the Gâtinais forest, and find a picture-perfect landscape of green fields dotted with pretty rural towns and villages, and one of France’s most well maintained castles, the Château de Courances. Still lived in by its current owner, the handsome 17th century castle is the stuff of dreams. Think tall winding iron gates, an elegant double stone staircase leading up to the main floors, honey hued stone exterior coiffed by a light slate roof and surrounded by acres of magnificent gardens. © Eric Sander Upscale French self-catering rentals company Pierres d’Histoire has made it possible to have Courances all to yourself for a few days by renting out the former estate manager’s home to guests. The Régie de Courances, a two-floor cottage with all the trimmings — including high chairs and cots, and toys for the little ones — sits at the entrance of the castle grounds and gives guests a taste of chateau life. Pull back the velvet drapes in the morning and you’ll be charmed by the daylight filtering through tall swaying chestnut trees that line the long driveway to the castle. Each floor has an apartment with two bedrooms and a kitchen, which the owners have been careful not to overly restore so the spaces still feel homely and lived-in. Hand drawn sketches and water colors of birds and plant life found on the grounds hang in the hallway, while a selection of books about the region and the artists who lived nearby in Barbizon or Milly-la-Forêt like Jean Cocteau and Niki de Saint Phalle are scattered on console tables by soft velvet couches and Victorian chaise longues arranged under floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the park with a creak. Alexis Armanet In winter, sit reading by the open fire in the living room after brisk countryside walks through the 185 acres of grounds (open to the public at weekends) of forested land and gardens with water features that look like something out of a fairy tale — perfect for younger guests to amble through. In summer, picnics are to be had out on the lawn that last until the setting sun makes the castle’s walls glow pink and purple. Just an hour south from Paris, Courances is located on the outskirts of the Gâtinais forest, which is great for dipping into nature and getting a taste for French countryside living without having to travel far from the city. Alexis Armanet At Courances, there’s also a small café in the old water mill where you can have lunch or tea and cake, with a nook of tables in a small clearing of the forest at the back, or a terrace at the front that looks out onto meticulously looked after Japanese gardens. Line the gardens and you’ll come to a wooden gate that leads to the restaurant where the kind staff, who are really great with kids, serve lunch, dinner and brunch at the weekends, on open-timber tables decorated with the most beautiful fresh flowers. Below is a small boutique selling produce grown on nearby farms like fruit and vegetables, a small selection of locally made jams, pasta and other sundries, as well as a collection of handmade soaps and wooden utensils for bathrooms and kitchens. James Darling Photography For evenings and mornings off, guests can also order breakfast baskets of fresh crusty baguettes and salted butter, jams and fruit to be delivered to the door, and light Mediterranean focused home cooked meals mixing with local produce from the restaurant kitchen. Respectful renovations of historic properties is what sets Pierres d’Histoire apart from other vacation home rental companies. As well as the Régie de Courances, the small company has six other maisons including a manor in Normandy, two stately family homes and an apartment on the grounds of another chateau not far from Courances, as well as a beautiful manor house in the Luberon countryside and a restored mill in the Languedoc. Each property’s soul shines through thanks to carefully considered refurbishments and tasteful hand-picked finds that fit with each house’s story, making it feel more like staying with a friend than in just another impersonal rental.

3 Healthy Eating Habits In The Elderly To Maintain Longevity | TheHealthSite.com – TheHealthSite https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/3-healthy-eating-habits-in-the-elderly-to-maintain-longevity-thehealthsite-com-thehealthsite/ World Food Day 2022: To maintain and achieve a healthy weight and feel better, you must eat nutritious meals and exercise regularly. Moreover, you could realize that exercising and eating healthier can make it easier to manage your demanding, busy life and be there for those dependent on you. Therefore, eating healthy is essential to keep oneself active to improve well-being and feel great. This ‘mantra of life’ implies to all, irrespective of age, gender, topography and many other factors. And for the senior elders of our society,’ eat healthy to stay fit must be followed just like a religious holy book. As you grow older, you undergo many changes, and you may need to adapt your lifestyle for healthy ageing. Healthy eating and regular physical activity are fundamental to good health at any age. Making appropriate lifestyle choices may also avert health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Dr Prateek Bhardwaj, COO of Vesta Elder Care, shares a few healthy eating tips to help you know what’s best for your older loved one: Choose high-fibre foods such as fruits, beans, whole-grain loaves of bread and cereals, unsalted nuts and seeds, vividly coloured vegetables (like green beans), and beans. To retain your bones healthy and strong as you age, consume low-fat or fat-free milk, milk products, or nondairy soy, almond, rice, or other beverages with added vitamin D and calcium. Skip the fried meals. Drink fluids all day long. You can feel less thirsty as you age, but your body still requires fluids to be hydrated and maintain regularity. Types Of Foods And Drinks Needed For Elderly Your body requires fewer calories as you age, but you still need the same amount of nutrients. So, it would be best to concentrate on eating foods high in nutrients. Foods that are high in nutrients pack more of the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients your body needs into fewer calories. So, increase your intake of nutrient-dense foods and liquids. Older people should “eat the rainbow of foods” since they are full of nutrients, including: Veggies and fruits Fat-free or low-fat milk; milk products; or nondairy soy, almond, rice, or other drinks with additional vitamin D and calcium. Whole grains, such as oats, whole-grain bread, and brown rice. Poultry, eggs, lean meats, and shellfish If you are tolerant and aren’t allergic to beans, peas, unsalted almonds, and seeds, they can be your partners in healthy living. What To Avoid? Some foods and beverages have many calories but few essential nutrients your body needs. Therefore, you must focus on avoiding or consuming less of these. Added sugars, solid fats, and salt ( in packaged foods ) hold many calories but don’t provide a healthy amount of nutrients. It will be a wise choice to limit these foods and drinks, such as: sugar-sweetened beverages and foods foods prepared with solid fats like butter, lard, margarine, and shortening foods with a lot of salt and additional fat (like butter or lard) (sodium) Conclusion The quantity of food and drinks you consume daily depends on your weight, age, metabolism, sex, and physical activity. Predominantly, men require more calories than women. However, at all ages, adults who are more physically active may need to consume more calories than those who are less active. Indian Sports News Wrap, October 16: Bhullar Grabs One-Shot Lead In Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational – Sportstar https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/indian-sports-news-wrap-october-16-bhullar-grabs-one-shot-lead-in-jeev-milkha-singh-invitational-sportstar/ Here are all the major developments in Indian sports on Sunday, October 16. GOLF Bhullar grabs one-shot lead in Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational Gaganjeet Bhullar shot a solid four-under 68 to lead by one shot after the penultimate round of the Rs 1.5 crore Jeev Milkha Singh Invitational in Chandigarh on Sunday. Bhullar has a three-day total of 14-under 202 at the Chandigarh Golf Club. Bengaluru’s Chikkarangappa S struck a 67 and local favourite Karandeep Kochhar carded an error-free 68 as both players were hot on the leader’s heels in tied second place at a total of 13-under 203. Second round leader Abhijit Singh Chadha, another Chandigarh golfer, slipped to fourth place at 11-under 205 after shooting a 72 on Saturday. Bhullar (69-65-68), a winner of 11 international titles, gained one spot from his overnight second position as a result of his steady effort that featured five birdies and a bogey. He sank early birdies on the first and third from a range of eight to 12 feet. After his bogey on the fourth, Gaganjeet created a few opportunities on the front-nine but could only manage a birdie on the sixth as he missed a few short putts. On the back-nine, Bhullar made a couple of good par saves and birdies on the two par-5s, 13th and 16th, including a great up and down on the latter, to end the day as sole leader. Bhullar, who originally hails from Kapurthala but is now based in Chandigarh, said, “I struck it well and hit a lot of regulations today but didn’t hole as many putts as the last round. It was a steady round as I just conceded one bogey. “My past experiences have taught me that whenever you are in contention over the weekend, minimizing unforced errors gives you an opportunity to climb up the leaderboard. That was the goal today. “I play this golf course four times a week. In the past two years I have spent a lot of time in Chandigarh. That’s the reason that I feel at home playing here.” Chikkarangappa’s (65-71-67) round featured seven birdies and two bogeys and lifted him two spots from his overnight fourth position. He managed to pull himself out of trouble on a few occasions. Chikka, the 2018 champion, extracted birdies in situations where he found the bunker, trees and the rough. Karandeep (65-70-68), the 2020 champion, brought in a card of 68 to move up one spot from his overnight third place. Among the seven players bunched in tied fifth at a total of eight-under 208, were Chandigarh-based golfers Akshay Sharma and Amrit Lal as well as prominent names Rahil Gangjee, Rashid Khan and Khalin Joshi. Among the other big names, Jyoti Randhawa was tied 13th at six-under 210, while Ajeetesh Sandhu and Udayan Mane were both tied 28th at four-under 212. The two amateurs who made the cut, local golfer Brijesh Kumar and Bengaluru’s Aryan Roopa Anand, were both tied 52nd at three-over 219. – PTI

Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse ‘Sad’ And ‘Empty’, Leaked Internal Documents Complain – Slashdot https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mark-zuckerbergs-metaverse-sad-and-empty-leaked-internal-documents-complain-slashdot/ Mark Zuckerberg’s Metaverse ‘Sad’ and ‘Empty’, Leaked Internal Documents Complain (cnbc.com) Posted by EditorDavid on Saturday October 15, 2022 @06:52PM from the un-friended dept. It’s been one year since Facebook changed its name to “Meta Platforms” remembers The Street. So after Mark Zuckerberg “bought the Oculus Quest VR headset, rebranded it Meta Quest, and formed Reality Labs solely to work on all projects related to the metaverse” — what happened next? Meta’s shares and market value have dropped and Zuckerberg’s personal fortune has shrunk, falling from $125 billion in January to $49.1 billion at last check, putting him No. 23 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Reality Labs is facing the hard reality that it’s pouring out gallons of red ink, losing $10 billion last year and about $5.7 billion so far in 2022. And leaked internal documents reveal discussions between Reality Labs management and employees, indicating that “Horizon Worlds” [Meta’s flagship metaverse for consumers] is ridden with game-breaking bugs, leading to a “quality lockdown” for the rest of the year. In fact, Horizon Worlds is also “failing to meet internal performance expectations,” reports CNBC, citing internal company documents reviewed by The Wall Street Journal: Meta initially aimed to reach 500,000 monthly active users in Horizon Worlds by the end of the year, but the current figure is less than 200,000, according to the report. Additionally, the documents showed that most users didn’t return to Horizon after the first month on the platform, and the number of users has steadily declined since spring, the Journal said. Only 9% of worlds are visited by at least 50 people, and most are never visited at all, according to the report.” “An empty world is a sad world,” one internal document reportedly adds. And Fortune cited some more discouraging statistics from the Journal‘s article: – Meta wants users to create their own worlds using Horizon’s tools. Less than 1% are doing so. – A tip feature to reward creators for their efforts has generated payouts of under $500 globally. Cumulatively, Horizon’s worlds have brought in only about $10,000 in “In-World Payments”. – Retention rates for the Quest virtual-reality headsets — sold by Meta to access Horizons — have dropped in each of the past three years. CNBC also notes that the report “comes as the company’s stock falls, user numbers decline and advertisers cut spending. Meta shares are down 62% so far this year….” So how did Meta respond to the Journal’s article? A Meta spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that the company continues to make improvements to the metaverse, which was always meant to be a multiyear project. Representatives for Meta didn’t immediately respond to CNBC’s request for comment. Meta has said it will release a web version of Horizon for mobile devices and computers this year, but the spokesman didn’t have any launch dates to disclose. “Atomic batteries to power, turbines to speed.” — Robin, The Boy Wonder Working…

9 Hardest Stealth Games Ever Made Ranked GameRant
9 Hardest Stealth Games Ever Made Ranked GameRant
9 Hardest Stealth Games Ever Made, Ranked – GameRant https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/9-hardest-stealth-games-ever-made-ranked-gamerant/ Stealth mechanics are a common feature in modern video games. Even games that are traditionally action-focused, like Elden Ring for example, contain at least a few stealth abilities, usually cobbled together from mechanics featured in other games. Crouching in tall grass? That’s stealth. Sneak up behind an enemy for an easy kill? That’s stealth too. Running away until the enemies “forget” they saw a threat? That’s definitely stealth. However, when it comes to games where stealth is the primary focus, these mechanics are much more robust. Enemies are smart and deadly, and their vision and hearing pick up the slightest hints of movement. The best – and most difficult – stealth games embrace all the features mentioned above as well as many others, weaving them into a tapestry of danger that requires strategic planning, lightning-fast movement, and a finely-tuned sense of timing to succeed. 9/9 Deus Ex: Mankind Divided The Deus Ex series has always been known for its incorporation of stealth mechanics into what outwardly appeared to be a sci-fi FPS game. The newer entries to the series take that stealth element to even greater heights, especially in the semi-open world city of Prague in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Mankind Divided received a lot of (fair) criticism about its story, particularly its abrupt ending. Lost in that conversation is the treasure trove of stealth options provided to players as they explore Prague. Adam Jensen has some unique stealth abilities, and whether he’s jumping across rooftops or skulking through sewers, the game incorporates them into its systems incredibly well. When players encounter a room full of enemies, and the real test begins. Trying to clear the game non-lethally is intensely challenging, and will require every bit of tech Jensen installs on his body. 8/9 Chronicles Of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay When it comes to movie tie-in games, one that gets criminally overlooked is Escape From Butcher Bay, the tie in to Vin Diesel’s The Chronicles of Riddick from 2004. The game is a prequel to the franchise’s first movie, Pitch Black, and chronicles Riddick’s escape from the most dangerous and brutal prison colony in the galaxy. It’s not entirely stealth-focused, there are moments of first-person shooting and hand-to-hand combat, but the stealth sections are where the game really shines. For one, they’re extremely challenging. Riddick can die in just a few hits, so caution dictates every move. That said, these sections also make the best use of Riddick’s skills, including his “eyeshine” ability to see in the dark, which can also blind him if used in bright areas. Riddick can take out enemies from behind or by dropping from above, getting quick kills with improvised weapons he finds throughout the prison. The game strikes a perfect balance between making Riddick feel vulnerable, and making him feel like a total badass. 7/9 Dishonored 2 The Dishonored series is best known for its stealth gameplay. While technically players can take an aggressive playstyle (and a few have pulled off some awesome sequences doing so), the stealth approach is the most challenging – and most rewarding – way to play. The first game in the series acts as a fantastic proof-of-concept, but Dishonored 2 is refined to a spectacular degree. The way to truly make Dishonored 2 one of the hardest stealth games of all time is to try playing non-lethally on the hardest difficulty. Even without changing difficulty settings, it’s still a huge challenge. One enemy won’t pose much of a threat, but as soon as a few of them work together death comes quickly afterward. Combine that with the extreme verticality and unusual gimmicks in each level, and Dishonored 2 never fails to put up a challenge. 6/9 Alien: Isolation Most players wouldn’t immediately think of Alien: Isolation as a stealth game, but while the player does receive the occasional weapon, for the most part they spend the game hiding under medical gurneys and inside closets, quietly moving past a host of dangerous enemies. The one enemy that transforms this game from hard to very hard is the Xenomorph. There are only a few missions where players deal with the Xenomorph directly, but they are widely considered to be the best (and hardest) parts of the game. Players can track the Xenomorph via the iconic motion detector, but they move more slowly while doing so. Even if they manage to detect the thing, there’s no way to fight it. It just gives the player an extra moment to find somewhere to hide. If they don’t, it’ll take the Xenomorph about three seconds to kill them. 5/9 Mark Of The Ninja It doesn’t necessarily leave this impression upon its completion, but Mark of the Ninja is a hard game. Its generous checkpoint system makes it easy to forget how many attempts each level – and even each section of a level – takes to complete, but this is a game that takes its stealth very seriously. 2D platformers don’t really jump to mind when imagining an ideal stealth experience, but Klei Entertainment crafted a masterclass in slow, quiet action gameplay. Every enemy the player faces requires pinpoint timing and a pre-planned escape route, and as the levels progress and the challenge ramps up, not even that will be enough to ensure success. 4/9 Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory There have been three Splinter Cell games released since Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory in 2005, but when fans envision a new, modern take on the series, that vision always harkens back to Chaos Theory. For a franchise with as much success as Splinter Cell has had, this entry is still the premier example of what the ultimate Sam Fisher video game looks like. A big part of that is just how real these games feel. There is a palpable sensation to the way Sam hides in the shadows. He’s not a bullet sponge, and his enemies always have the more powerful weaponry, but Sam Fisher possesses a unique set of skills (and a few essential gadgets) that make him a nightmare to deal with. It’s up to the player to master those skills and gadgets, because one misstep into a well-lit room will leave Sam exposed and almost completely helpless. The Metal Gear franchise practically pioneered the stealth genre, dating all the way back to the first game in 1998. While Hideo Kojima has spent the better part of his 30-year development career refining the series’ gameplay (with a couple digressions along the way), he hit a pinnacle with Metal Gear Solid V. Most stealth games give the player some sense of when they are or are not visible to enemies. The Phantom Pain does no such thing, and instead relies on player understanding. If it seems like Snake should be hidden, he probably is. It takes some getting used to, especially in the game’s brightly-lit areas, but the more players adapt to that system the more reliable it becomes. Combine that with a multitude of gadgets, weapons, and companions Snake can bring with him on missions, and despite the controversy surrounding its development,The Phantom Pain is arguably the most complete stealth experience ever made. 2/9 Shadow Tactics: Blades Of The Shogun For the PC players out there, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun offers a stealth experience that stands apart from every other entry in the genre. In a typical stealth game, players would have full control over one character. In Shadow Tactics, players have an isometric tactical view through which they issue orders to five characters at once. Naturally, this significantly increases the game’s challenge. Guiding those five assassins through enemy camps riddled with enemies is no easy feat. It takes planning, caution, and wits to pull it off. The best option is usually to avoid combat entirely, picking off the occasional lone guard when there is no other choice. Shadow Tactics stands apart in its genre both for its gameplay, its setting, and its high degree of difficulty. 1/9 Hitman: Absolution There was no doubt that a Hitman game would make this list, but of all the possible entries, why the often-criticized Hitman: Absolution? The game was heavily panned for taking the Hitman franchise away from its roots and pushing it in a more action-heavy direction. Well, that’s exactly why it’s the hardest stealth game of all time: because it’s not designed to be a pure stealth game. Cranking Hitman: Absolution up to the hardest difficulty and trying to play through it without being detected is virtually impossible. Crowds are dense in this game, and enemies become suspicious at the faintest hint of Agent 47’s presence, and will draw their weapons the next instant. The game wants players to start shooting to save themselves. Ignore that solicitation, and this may be the hardest challenge players will ever face. Terra Classic Price Prediction – Is LUNC Dead, Two Experts Predict ‘Zero’ – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/terra-classic-price-prediction-is-lunc-dead-two-experts-predict-zero-cryptonews/ The day the Terra Classic price (LUNC) hit its 2022 top, two of the best crypto traders correctly predicted the bull run was over. That was September 8th, when the LUNC price reached $0.000593 on Binance, and as of mid October LUNC is now trading over 50% lower, below the $0.0003 support level. Terra LUNA Classic Price Prediction – Light Crypto Light (@lightcrypto), who has 169,000 followers, tweeted: “Think LUNC burn trade is about to implode, momentum just broke, elevator down is a high possibility”. GCR (@GiganticRebirth), who has 187,000 followers, replied from his secondary account with a Hillary Clinton quote “that’s right, zero”. GCR famously won a $10 million bet against former Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon, with his bearish Terra LUNA price prediction back in March. Light, who runs a prop trading firm, then posted a long tweet thread a few days later with a mix of fundamental and technical analysis: As well as predicting the Terra Classic price action would be a pump and dump – “pumped by hit-and-run developers and cynical exchange operators, all taking advantage of the hordes of retail looking to make it all back in one trade” he tweeted a few days later that LUNC would drop 90%+ to return to its origin, or lower. Later that month, the LUNC price did crash 70% to $0.000179, although nothing goes down in a straight line (the Terra LUNA collapse in May was a black swan event caused by the circulating supply hyper inflating to 6.5 trillion). For Light’s prediction to play out – he charted a target of $0.00004, the yearly low of the new Terra Classic asset since the hard fork, hit on June 9th 2022 – the LUNC price would need to drop 84% from today’s price. October LUNC Price Prediction Tweets – LUNC Burn Light’s most recent tweet thread this month centres around Binance burning LUNC tokens, and how the 1.2% LUNC burn is not enough to justify Terra Classic increasing over $1 billion in market cap since it was announced. He also posted Coinalyze data on Oct 3rd showing an “insane amount of deadwood to wipe out in LUNC derivatives, $262.2 million across venues and instruments, all levered, all driven by a bankrupt narrative into a sell the news event.” Light opened a Terra Classic short position on Oct 2nd: “LUNC managed to add over $1b in market capitalization on a Binance announcement that will see a few million dollars removed from its circulating supply tomorrow. And in the long run, that weekly burn will trend to 0 along with LUNC’s volume. Filled full short again.” Incredibly, Oct 2nd was again a top, as the LUNC price spiked back to $0.000372 but the bounce from $0.0001794 ended there. Like his Sept 8th post, the Terra Classic price has not traded higher than that day since then. Across crypto Twitter circles, Light is considered one of the best crypto traders to follow for price predictions and other market analysis. As is GCR, who corrected predicted the Bitcoin price was topped out back in November 2021, when the all-time high of $69,000 was hit and the bear market began. We reported on how Gigantic Rebirth shorted LUNC at $0.00042 on Sept 9th, and was up almost $4.4 million in PnL a week later. Also on the day the Terra Classic price topped, another notable crypto analyst Tree of Alpha compared LUNC to a ponzi scheme and pointed out transaction tax burns didn’t prevent SafeMoon from going to zero. Terra Classic Alternatives If Light and GCR’s Terra Classic predictions continue to be accurate – as they have been so far – retail investors holding LUNC will stand to lose a lot in the correction. See our reviews of the latest crypto presales for some high potential LUNC alternatives. New token presales typically generate a higher ROI than assets that already have a multi-billion dollar market capitalization. We previously reviewed Tamadoge before it outperformed the Terra Classic bull run within the space of a week, rising over 1,900% before a retracement. Opioid Crisis: US Teens Fastest Growing Group To Die – BBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/opioid-crisis-us-teens-fastest-growing-group-to-die-bbc/ Image source, Ramos family Image caption, Melanie Ramos was 15 when she took a pill that killed her By Regan Morris BBC News, Los Angeles Teen overdose deaths have never been higher in the US as young Americans are increasingly poisoned by the synthetic opiate fentanyl, even as fewer teens use drugs. More than 100,000 Americans died of drug overdoses last year – the vast majority were adults – but the fastest growing group to die of overdoses were teenagers. Melanie Ramos’ family knows this all too well. The 15-year-old girl died inside her school’s bathroom last month after taking a pill laced with fentanyl. Melanie and her friend thought they were taking Percocet, a pain medication that is sometimes abused. But the counterfeit pills were laced with fentanyl and she was poisoned. “She was a beautiful, sweet girl coming from hardworking parents,” her uncle Oscar said at a candlelight vigil on the steps of Bernstein High School, where friends and family prayed in Spanish and placed flowers on a shrine to Melanie. Fentanyl is typically smuggled into the United States by Mexican drug cartels. While it used to be laced into the hardest drugs like heroin, the cartels now mass-produce fentanyl pills in rainbow colours to mimic prescription pills and, some say, to target kids who are more willing to experiment with them. In Los Angeles a spate of overdose deaths from pills has authorities worried, and on Wednesday, the state of California seized 52lb (24kg) of fentanyl powder – enough to make a quarter million pills – as part of a state-wide operation led by the Justice department. But the problem extends across the US. In New York last week, authorities seized 15,000 rainbow coloured pills hidden in a Lego toy box. The US is an outlier when it comes to overdoses, with a death rate 20 times the global average – although Scotland is not far behind. “We are far and away the world leader in overdose death unfortunately,” said Joseph Friedman, a substance use researcher at the University of California Los Angeles. The overdose rate among school-aged children in the US doubled between 2019 and 2020 and then rose a further 20% last year, he said. “Teen drug use is becoming more dangerous but not more common,” Mr Friedman said, adding that fentanyl, not the stress of the pandemic was to blame: Teen drug use actually dropped sharply during the pandemic because it is usually a social activity. Image caption, Melanie’s high school, like other LA schools, will now stock Narcan, an overdose reversal medication At a contentious meeting at Bernstein High School, where Melanie died, officials and police warned upset families and children that “one pill can kill”. Her death has prompted LA officials to stock the overdose reversal medication, Narcan, in every school. The medication, which commonly comes in the form of a nasal spray, can be used by anyone to reverse the effects of an overdose. Increasing access to Narcan is also part of a federal response to the opioid crisis announced this month by the Biden administration, which said it would inject $1.5bn (£1.3bn) to fund programmes and support law enforcement to go after drug traffickers. Experts say teens will experiment with drugs no matter what they are told or taught in schools, so overdose prevention is the only way to slow the growth in overdose deaths. Community Health Project Los Angeles workers provide free Narcan and fentanyl testing strips – so people can test drugs before getting high. They are glad schools will now keep Narcan on hand, and have urged parents and kids to carry it in their backpacks. Image source, Getty Images Image caption, Schools will have the nasal spray version of Narcan At a recent training, drug and alcohol counsellor Sandra Mims demonstrated how to use the spray – one spritz up the nose, followed by a rub on the sternum. Then another spray 2-3 minutes later if the person overdosing did not respond. “Children start as young as 12,” Ms Mims said. “It’s so much more deadly now with fentanyl and the synthetic pills.” Nick Angelo, who has used opiates in the past but now works for the non-profit, saved three people with Narcan in a single week. But he sounded weary rather than heroic when talking about it. “When me and my friends were using opiates we didn’t have to worry that every single hit we took could be our last,” he said.

Idaho Now Open For Bitcoin Business – Local News 8 – LocalNews8.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/idaho-now-open-for-bitcoin-business-local-news-8-localnews8-com/ ABERDEEN, Idaho (KIFI) – The Idaho Utilities Commission has made a decision in the clash between the crypto company GeoBitmine and Idaho Power, which could impact crypto start-ups throughout the state. GeoBitmine had plans to convert the old Simplot plant in Aberdeen into a greenhouse, which would then be heated by crypto-mining computer servers. But those plans were halted, due to a new customer classification by Idaho Power. The class would involve a set energy rate for crypto companies and would let Idaho Power divert energy from the company in the summer, without compensation. The Utilities Commission has now denied GeoBitmine’s petition for a new rate, but ruled that Idaho Power must give the company fair compensation when diverting their electricity. GeoBitmine founder and CEO, Jay Jorgenson, says with this change, they’re willing to come back to the negotiating table. “We want to take advantage of an opportunity to develop the state of Idaho, create those year-round jobs in jobs, and bring a lot of tax revenue and benefits to the state,” said Jorgenson. “The Aberdeen Idaho facility is still very much a place that we would like to entertain, if Idaho Power would be willing to come back to the table and say, ‘Okay, we’ve learned a few things, let’s see how we can do business together.'” But the crypto company has other options in the state if the partnership doesn’t work out. Idaho Power was not available for comment, but their new crypto customer classification has been approved by the Utilities Commission. However, owners of crypto companies believe that the new resolution opens the door for more Bitcoin mining in the state. “Now you have a lot of people in and around the country, different capital groups looking for places to deploy mining operations. Idaho now becomes a contender,” said Bosie-based Bitcoin Miner, Tom Merkle. “So, basically you could say, you know, Idaho is now kind of given a stamp of approval.”

Authorities: Man Arrested For Eluding Deputies, Believed He Wouldn’t Be Pursued – KOIN.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/authorities-man-arrested-for-eluding-deputies-believed-he-wouldnt-be-pursued-koin-com/ PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A Vancouver man was arrested after ignoring several traffic rules and attempting to escape a police chase on Friday night, which resulted in a crash, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities say the driver, identified as 26-year-old Kostyantyn Kray, was booked into the Clark County Jail on a charge of attempting to elude a police vehicle, which is a Class C felony in Washington. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says it started when a deputy tried to stop an SUV with no license plates after the car ran a red light at the intersection of NE St. Johns Road and NE 88th Street just before 9 p.m. The SUV then attempted to escape the deputy by speeding through another red light, authorities say. The deputy stopped the pursuit, following Washington State law, but it wasn’t long before the deputy saw a cloud of dust fill the air, according to authorities. The SUV allegedly had attempted to drive between two moving vehicles and hit a pickup truck, sheering the driver-side wheels off of the SUV and pushing the truck through a median, across the road, and into a utility pole. Kray, the driver of the SUV, was taken into custody, according to the Clark County Sheriff’s office, and was then taken to a local hospital, where he was medically cleared and then taken to the Clark County Jail. A passenger in the SUV told deputies that they heard that the police had been defunded and were short-staffed so they wouldn’t be pursued for a traffic stop and that they believed Kray wanted to test this for himself, authorities said. There were no reported injuries as a result of the crash.
