Hall 3 of the fair gives an intriguing insight into how a veteran from the Armed Forces switched to organic farming and is keen to promote an organic range of products that are suitable for all age groups. A team of six veteran members from Uttarakhand took up the initiative of pursuing organic farming. “We cultivate 83 varieties of crops including pulses, sesame, millets, and vegetables depending on the weather conditions prevailing in Dehradun. In order to expand our customer base, we have also come up with organic noodles and organic cookies for the present generation so that they can adapt to organic food by enjoying the food that they are fond of consuming”, said the exhibitor of the Assav Organics. He further added that they have adopted the method of biodynamics, a pseudo-scientific method of agriculture, to enhance their production. Along with diverse organic products, the stall also provides eco-friendly jute bags from Odisha.  ‘Adopt a Beehive’ in Uttarakhand Himalayas Another exhibitor from Uttarakhand displayed packages of organic tea and honey with small hampers that can be presented as healthy Diwali gift packs. The exhibitor mentioned that the honey is created from traditional methods and was high on nutrition and medicinal value making it ideal for everyone’s consumption. In addition, he also introduced a concept of ‘Adopt a Beehive’ promoted by Himalayan Tree whereby visitors can support the honeybee population by supporting those who manage their colonies; the beekeepers who are keeping the artisanal honey production alive. Through this, the visitors can provide livelihood benefits to rural producers and environmental services in return of purest, raw and organic seasonal honey delivered to their doorstep from their own beehive. Undoubtedly, CII provides a great platform and acts as a catalyst in showcasing new inventions and inculcate the habits among the general public towards healthy living, especially since the pandemic struck the world. The exposure which small brands get here adds a lot to their confidence, especially ones with less interaction opportunities with their direct consumer.

The Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has announced Dubai’s Metaverse strategy. In a tweet, he attached the following infographic. Fostering Innovation In many ways, it’s not surprising that innovative governments like Dubai‘s are starting to consider the Metaverse. Dubai has a history of embracing innovation, having already attracted 1,000 companies in the blockchain and Metaverse space, which makes it more inclined to understand that building the necessary infrastructure and fostering a healthy ecosystem around this emerging industry can pay off well in terms of the city’s overall economy. Citi released a report that estimated the Metaverse market’s size to be between $8 and $13 trillion — that means there are many companies and jobs that may exist in Dubai. Just as the Bay Area became the physical epicenter of the personal computer and the internet, Dubai’s leaders intend for it to become the internet’s next evolution center. The strategy is meant to foster innovation in blockchain and Metaverse technologies, as well as set standards for investors and users. Dubai’s state news agency WAM also emphasized its mission to provide education for developers, creators, and users looking to transition into the Metaverse and Web3. This is critical to creating the experiences needed to draw users to (and enable them to use) new platforms. Determining Regulations Part of this mission also revolves around putting the right regulations in place to help in the creation and adoption of new technologies and services. Determining which regulations are right, however, has been one of the main debates, especially around cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies. If there’s too little regulation, then investors are at harm — this was the argument made after LUNA’s crash in May. If there’s too much regulation, then the space can’t grow. This is what most crypto-enthusiasts believe is holding innovation back. In March, Dubai established the Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) and passed its first law dealing with such assets. The city has already granted licenses to many large crypto exchanges like Binance and the European subsidiary of FTX. Faced with increasingly restrictive regulation by other governments, exchanges and blockchain companies are strongly incentivized to set up shop in crypto-friendly locations like Dubai. Bybit has announced that it would soon open its global headquarters in Dubai. Other players in the space like Crypto.com said they would establish a presence in the city. Incorporating Metaverse Tech for Smart Cities Major companies based in Dubai are starting to incorporate the Metaverse and blockchain-based technologies into their businesses. Notable examples include airline company Emirates; business conglomerate Damac Group; fashion house Roberto Cavalli; and UAE health care firm Thumbay Group, who plan to release a “Metaverse hospital” in the fall where patients can consult doctors virtually. Dubai’s Museum of the Future in September hosted the Dubai Metaverse Assembly, which saw more than 300 experts and 40 organizations come together to discuss the Metaverse and its opportunities. Hamdan bin Mohammed also recently announced the establishment of the Higher Committee for Future Technology and Digital Economy, which will play an integral part in Dubai’s mission to spearhead the Metaverse and Web3. Dubai’s government has many options to integrate Metaverse technologies besides just fostering entrepreneurship and innovation. While the promise of “smart cities” has long remained only in the hype-based vocabulary of tech enthusiasts, the improvement of AR (augmented reality) hardware may finally allow us to move closer to intelligent cities. As AR technology improves, cities like Dubai can incorporate immersive experiences into public infrastructure. Facilities like bus stops and public bathrooms may be marked in a user’s field of view. The government may decide to build a low-resolution digital replica of the city and overlay storefronts, roads, and historic landmarks with important information or educational content that may explain the landmark’s history, for example. In some ways, public sector officials, particularly city officials, can contribute more to the Metaverse than large corporations and national governments. There are many ways immersive technology and blockchain can deliver value to the public and through public infrastructure; they can help shape the regulation necessary for industries to grow. Projects can start small, like adding a QR code to a public art installation that leads to a mobile AR experience, or end up big, like switching the national monetary system from a fiat currency to a cryptocurrency. Binance Announces $500 Million Funding For Bitcoin Mining – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/binance-announces-500-million-funding-for-bitcoin-mining-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / Iryna Budanova Binance Pool, the crypto mining services arm of cryptocurrency exchange Binance, aims to support Bitcoin miners to weather the crypto winter with a $500 million loan.  The ongoing bear market has had deep impacts on almost all industry participants, particularly miners. Amid rising fuel and electricity prices and the crypto market downturn, this cohort has been hit the most, with many miners proceeding to shut down their machines as profitability becomes negligible.  In a bid to help miners and in turn, help the broader crypto market from further damage, Binance Pool, one of the world’s largest crypto mining pools, has decided to offer a $500 million loan to support Bitcoin miners, the company said in a Friday blog post.   “Binance Pool has a responsibility to help maintain a healthy digital asset ecosystem,” the post read. “In light of current market conditions, Binance Pool is launching a $500million lending project to support crypto miners and digital infrastructure providers.” The report detailed that both “public and private blue-chip bitcoin (BTC) mining and digital asset infrastructure companies globally” would be able to secure debt through this initiative and finance their services.  Some terms of the loans include “an 18 to a 24-month term,” interest rates ranging from 5% to 10, and “offering security, either physical or digital assets, satisfactory to Binance.”  Aside from Binance, other major industry players have also taken measures to support struggling crypto miners. For one, Jihan Wu, the founder of crypto mining rig-maker Bitmain, plans to set up a $250 million fund to purchase distressed assets from mining firms. “There are opportunities in every cycle,” Matt Kong, chief executive officer of Bitdeer, reportedly said. “If you can time the market and enter at the bottom, come out at the top, then you will make money. It works especially well for mining.”  Bitcoin Hashrate Hits New ATH On Tuesday, the total hashrate of the Bitcoin network reached a fresh all-time high, suggesting that miners are now more optimistic about the bitcoin price as they have become online despite consistently low BTC prices. The Bitcoin hashrate is a measure of the amount of computing power that is dedicated to mining BTC and securing the network. An increasing hashrate means that more mining machines are coming online, which could signal rising optimism among miners about bitcoin prices going forward. Data from Blockchain.com shows that the total Bitcoin hashrate hit 241.88 Ehash/s last week, up significantly from this year’s low of 168.2 Ehash/s in early January. The all-time high was reached when looking at the data on a 7-day moving average basis, an often-used way to smooth out shorter-term fluctuations in the hashrate on the Bitcoin network.

And nearly 30% of people say they hang out with their neighbors and local friends more than they used to. No. 1 most neighborly city in the U.S. in 2022: Rochester, New York Population: 206,357 The Flower City topped the list because of its consistent ranking for neighborly acts, volunteering, charitable giving, and happiness. Aside from the city offering plenty to do in its bustling neighborhoods, Rochester is also home to Art Park. It’s the only park in the U.S. dedicated to visual and performing arts, according to Neighbor.com. However, there’s a new coffee stand in town that prefers to take a more rural approach. Marirose Haatia is the franchise owner of the newly opened Country Coffee drive-up coffee shop, at 6202 N.E. Highway 99 in Hazel Dell. Country Coffee may be a new addition to Clark County, but its origins date to 2013. Country Coffee got its start as a small espresso stand in Boring, Ore. Its founder, Melanie Ward, died earlier this year, but her legacy is carried on by her family, friends, and team members. Country Coffee has now grown to 12 different shops across Oregon. Now Country Coffee has been able to expand into its first location in Washington. Haatia started working for Country Coffee four years ago, while studying to become a veterinary technician. While she would go on to enjoy her time in the veterinary field, she often found herself thinking back to Country Coffee and soon realized it was her true passion. We made great memories but if I did it all again, I’d be sure to learn from the following mistakes. From shifting my mindset to winging it for naps, here’s what I wish I did differently. This summer, I planned a vacation to Oahu, Hawaii, with my husband and 1-year-old daughter. It was our first time visiting Hawaii as a family. But I kept delaying it, either because COVID-19 transmission rates were too high and I didn’t feel comfortable traveling, I was too overwhelmed while taking care of a baby, or too busy handling a cross-country move from New York City to California. Finally, this summer, the timing felt right. My family was now West Coast-based and Hawaii seemed like the ideal destination.  We planned to visit for a week and split our time between the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort on Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Disney’s Aulani Resort & Spa in Ko Olina, and back to Waikiki to the Royal Hawaiian Hotel before we flew out of Honolulu. We made some great memories and I’m glad we went, but if I could do it all over again, there are a few mistakes we made that I’d handle differently.  I first learned that, as a parent, traveling with a small child isn’t a vacation — it’s a trip. Probably bringing a 1-year-old to Hawaii. I love my daughter more than life itself but she’s a toddler and toddlers are … tough. Traveling with a toddler is even harder. Due to the pandemic and the nature of having a young child, we didn’t travel much with our daughter since she was born, aside from a few close-to-home getaways. This was our first big vacation outside of the continental US and I was excited. And while that’s not inherently a bad thing, I should have lowered my expectations from the start. We were headed to paradise, but I wouldn’t even come close to kicking back at the pool with cocktails, reading a good book, or working on my tan.  Instead, most of the time I was trying to corral and entertain a jet-lagged 21-month-old with a short attention span who had no desire to go to the beach, got bored of the pool easily, and refused to sit in restaurants for any meals.  Each day I was more tired than the last, frustrated by so many tantrums, and longed to collapse onto a lounge chair or swim in the ocean. I’m still glad we went, but next time, I’ll shift my thinking, expect the worst, and hope for the best. I wish I better prepared for our flights and packed a few key carry-on items. I wish I devoted the same level of attention to my carry-on for our 5-hour flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu. We had an 8 a.m. flight and by the time we made it through security and to our gate, my daughter was tired. I didn’t pack enough snacks thinking I’d buy her a pastry at the airport, but the line at Starbucks was so long, we’d miss our flight if we waited, and there was nowhere else to eat in the terminal. Naturally, she refused the items I had on hand, leaving me to contend with a hangry toddler.  Fortunately, she fell asleep soon after takeoff across my lap. But that meant I had to sit in an uncomfortable position for the next few hours and try not to move or risk waking her. I regretted not bringing a sweater or neck pillow to use as a cushion for my elbow, which quickly lost all feeling. The airplane cabin was also stuffy and warm. I was sweating from carrying my daughter through the airport and quickly realized I had forgotten two other key items to keep cool: a water bottle and a hair tie.  On the return flight, I made sure to come better prepared, but I should have packed more diversions to keep my daughter busy. Going there, she was happy to watch the iPad, but coming back, it didn’t interest her as much and I wished I had more distractions to keep her from kicking the seat in front. When we landed in Hawaii, we picked up a rental car, which I thought would give us freedom to explore and travel between hotels. Booking transfers would have been cheaper. My daughter in the car. Emily Hochberg/Insider I booked our weeklong rental car through Costco Travel for $476, which I thought was a good price given the summer travel dates. I wanted a rental car so we wouldn’t be reliant on anyone else to get around and could install my daughter’s car seat once and be done with it. I initially thought it would be the cheapest option, too. But I forgot about parking. At Hilton Hawaiian Village, the self-parking charge for registered hotel guests is $57 per night; for our three-night stay, it cost $171. At Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, self parking is $37 per day, though valet was the same price, so we chose that; for two nights, it cost $74. Finally, at the Royal Hawaiian, self parking for our two-night stay was $45 per day, so that cost $90. In total, we spent $335 on parking during our trip. We also didn’t end up driving much and mostly stayed at our hotels. We only used the car to get to and from the airport, switch hotels, and make one afternoon trip to the Honolulu Aquarium. The upside was we only had to fill up the gas once before returning the car, and that cost just $21. Had we relied on airport and hotel transfers, I estimate we would have saved around $100. Charley’s Taxi, a popular service recommended by each hotel we stayed at, offers flat rates to and from the airport to Waikiki Beach for $31 each way, and $95 each way between Waikiki Beach and the Aulani resort. The service would have cost us around $252. Even with tips or fees added in, I still think it would have been cheaper and someone would have helped us with all our luggage. While I enjoyed the convenience of being on our own schedule, Hawaii is expensive, and a car wasn’t really necessary for our itinerary. I tried to have too many nice meals at restaurants. Our trip would have been less stressful for everyone if we chose takeout. Emily Hochberg/Insider I already know it’s unrealistic to expect a toddler to sit quietly in a restaurant for an hour-long meal. But since I hadn’t properly lowered my expectations enough on vacation, I incorrectly thought it would be easy to dine out by the water if we chose somewhere low-key, that wasn’t remotely fancy. On our first night at the Hilton, we chose a casual beachfront restaurant, but even that was too much for my jet-lagged daughter. She didn’t want to watch videos or sit still. The time change also affected her appetite and she wouldn’t eat foods she normally enjoyed, adding to her fussiness. So rather than savor the view and my meal, I had to carry a screaming, kicking toddler out of the restaurant to the horror of my fellow diners while my husband averted eye contact and ate his meal alone. Later, I picked a hibachi-style restaurant thinking she’d love the fire and action of the experience. Unfortunately, I didn’t anticipate that strangers in the group dining format would make her shy and run from the table. She spent the whole meal in the corner, with me or my husband taking turns standing with her. And on our last night, I thought we’d have a quick meal and enjoy final mai tais. But before we could even order, she demanded to run onto the sand with my husband and wouldn’t return.  We would have been better off just doing takeout in a park or on the beach and actually enjoying our meals together. You know what I am talking about. “I should save more money.” “I should be further along in my career.” “I should clean my refrigerator.” “I should exercise more.” “I should go on a diet.” Sometimes it sneaks in as a shouldn’t. “I shouldn’t feel this way.” “I shouldn’t eat that …” Here is the problem with these s-words. They are ripe with guilt, meant to make us feel inadequate and less than. And they really serve no better purpose than do a number on our self esteem. Diet culture knows the power of shoulds/shouldn’ts and has done a phenomenal job tapping into our deep wells of guilt and self doubt to sell us solution after solution claiming to cure us once and for all of our shoulds. “You should weigh less? Great. This diet will get you there. You should have a beach body in 6 weeks? We have a solution for that too.” Here’s the thing though. The joke’s on us. Diet culture isn’t selling us the answer, it’s keeping us stuck. Listen, there is no doubt you can go on a diet, work out seven days a week and lose weight. BUT when the motivation is driven by a feeling of guilt or fear that you somehow don’t stack up to the image you’re being sold, the likelihood of sustaining that weight loss is slim (no pun intended.) If you want to define good health as a measurement of what you weigh or how much you workout by all means, keep doing what you are doing. But if you want to expand your idea of health to also include your well being consider this; research shows that counting calories you consume along with the number you burn does not translate to reliable results after about 6 months. (Mann et al., 2007) So what does translate into sustainable good health and well being? How about starting with this idea. No matter what you weigh there is nothing you can eat that deserves punishment either through a negative thought pattern or exercising it off. See, when we take that path, we miss so much fulfillment that comes from the experience of truly enjoying our mom’s famous apple pie or what it feels like to go for a run on a beautiful fall day, experiencing the colors, sights and smells. We operate from a place of inadequacy, guilt and shame and frankly those make for terrible motivators. When we start to ignore what we should be doing, we free ourselves from this place of restriction that leaves us desperately wanting more. Let’s face it — restricting certain foods means we are MUCH more likely to overeat them than if we’d just said yes in the first place. And who is going to stick to a workout routine that feels like punishment? Creating a healthy lifestyle requires flipping the switch. Rather than relying on the latest diet trend to tell you what, when and how much you should be eating, start listening to what YOU hear your body telling you. What foods give you more energy, make you feel less bloated, keep you full until lunchtime or help you finish the workout strong? What exercise gives you that great feeling of accomplishment? Allows you to get outside and see the world around you? There is no question that this is easier said than done. We have been inundated with this idea that we don’t know ourselves and therefore shouldn’t trust ourselves to know what we need. It takes a great deal of awareness to challenge these thought patterns and not panic when they sneak back in. I am still a work in progress and likely will be for a long time to come. But I can tell you this: Going out to eat with dear friends is a lot more enjoyable when I am not fretting about what to order or how I will feel about it later. My body began to have less running injuries when my motivation was about feeling accomplished and not trying to undo last night’s dinner. And it is a LOT easier to make healthy choices when I give myself permission not to from time to time. This is where healthy living starts. By learning to trust yourself and your own ability to know what your body needs to feel its best. It was his fourth career four-strikeout game in the postseason and all four have come against Cleveland — Judge had four strikeouts in Games 1, 4, and 5 of the 2017 ALDS. Two games does not a postseason make, and the Yankees are even in the series rather than trailing, but they are at their best when Judge is a threat to change the game with each swing every at-bat. Right now, just getting the bat on the ball has been a challenge. The sooner Judge gets back into a groove at the plate, the better New York’s changes of moving on. Right now, he looks as lost as he has at any point in 2022. “It’s baseball. You’re up against the best. Tough hitting conditions. Great hitters go 0-for on a given day. Google introduced Starline in 2021 with the goal of making video calls less weird and awkward. It’s essentially a very complicated video conferencing booth that uses cameras, depth sensors, and three-dimensional imagery to approximate face-to-face conversations between two remote participants. A suite of cameras even track both participants’ eye movements and adjust the view on the other side to enable the two people to make eye contact. Our reporter tried it and found that it does a good job creating the sense that the other person is sitting across from you, making the resulting interactions feel very realistic. Others who have tried it say the same. Video: Google Google has been testing the setup internally and is now preparing to set up Starline booths in offices outside the company. Chances are you won’t be able to use Starline quite yet, unless you happen to work with one of the companies Google is partnering with in the US. (Salesforce, T-Mobile, and WeWork, to name a few.) It’s also not clear what Google plans to do with the tech. The company has positioned it as a way for long-distance relatives or coworkers to connect. Having a more lifelike interaction could help remote workers have less stilted conversations. Yes, you’re stuck in that Starline booth, but at least you don’t have to jump around with a headset on. Here’s some more of this week’s news from the Gear desk. iPhone Coasters At its iPhone announcement event in September, Apple took several opportunities to scare the living daylights out of anyone who dares venture outside their home. Apple’s true goal was to highlight the emergency response features in its new iPhones and Apple Watches. One of those was crash detection, which can automatically call emergency services when the phone senses you’ve been in an auto collision. Apple says its hardware can detect the kinds of sudden stops and inversions that might occur in a wreck. Oh, but you know where else those movements might happen? On a roller coaster. At theme parks around the US, iPhone users have reported going on twisty-turny roller coasters then discovering later that their phone has called the cops. In some cases, emergency responders have shown up on the scene for these false alarms. Critics have expressed concern that this could potentially tie up emergency phone lines and personnel. Apple has said the issue is not widespread and that the tech will improve over time. Wish Upon a Polestar The Swedish car company Polestar has announced a new electric vehicle. The Polestar 3 is an all-wheel drive SUV. The company says the 400-V battery gets up to 300 miles on a charge. Inside is a dashboard powered by an Nvidia computer that projects driving information onto the windshield like a head-up display. It starts at $83,900, which is nearly twice as much as the debut price of the previous model, the Polestar 2. There isn’t an official release date for the Polestar 3, but the company says it plans to start selling the vehicles toward the end of 2023. The Zuck Zone Mark Zuckerberg has bet big on the metaverse. His company, Meta, has already pumped billions of dollars into the virtual realm, convinced that one day it will inevitably become mainstream. Thing is, that bet will take a long time to pay off. Meanwhile, Meta just announced a new $1,500 VR headset. The tech is cool, but there’s still no sign whatsoever that society at large is eager to strap on a face computer and hop into the virtual realm. (Never mind that the headset also uses inward-facing cameras to track the wearer’s eye movements and facial expressions, which raised privacy concerns—especially because it’s Meta on the other end.) Cardano recently achieved another milestone with the release of the Vasil upgrade. According to Charles Hoskinson, founder of the network, this software upgrade focuses on scaling the blockchain. The Vasil Upgrade saw the Cardano protocol reach a larger network capacity – supported by lower transaction fees and higher throughput. Furthermore, Cardano is grinding toward another upgrade dubbed Voltaire – which will introduce governance standards. Cardano’s focus on decentralization sets it up for the front-row role in blockchain security and scalability. Over the last year, Cardano technically rebranded from a sleeping to a tech star. In addition to bringing staking to Cardano in the third quarter of 2021, the protocol’s adoption has been aggressively expanding globally among governments and organizations. Cardano price prediction to a new all-time could be rather reserved, considering it rallied 2,300% from $0.12 in July 2020 to $3.09 in August 2021. Such a run-up from the current price will place ADA price slightly above $8.00. It is worth mentioning that in the short term, Cardano price could face restricted movement owing to the current bear market conditions. However, in the next bull run, ADA may have the potential to climb to $15.00. According to Dan Gambardella, an analyst and a Cardano bull, the worst of the bear market is nearly gone, and the only way will soon be to the upside. I asked Marios Georgiou, a guide who often works with large groups, about ways to avoid the crowds. The trick is to know where the tour buses and cruise ship passengers go and to find out-of-the-way spots like Paphos, where you can participate in pottery workshops at The Place, an art studio in town, or visit Paphos Castle, an ancient structure overlooking the Mediterranean. If you get out of town just a little, the crowds will thin out, and you’ll feel like you have the place to yourself. “Just be adventurous,” he recommends. Konami to Enter Metaverse and Web3 Arena Konami, one of the biggest AAA game developers and publishers in Japan, is showing interest in jumping on the metaverse and Web3 entertainment bandwagon. The company recently published a series of job openings for the production of experiences that include this type of technology in its next games. The company is recruiting via 13 different job openings in the areas of infrastructure development, production and operations, and support. These new openings will help to “provide new experiences such as Web3 and Metaverse,” according to Konami’s news release. While there have been no statements about the IPs (intellectual properties) that will be using these new technologies, the company did explain its general plans for the future, which also include non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Konami stated: We have been conducting research and development to incorporate the latest technology into games and contents, and plan to launch a service where players can trade their in-game NFTs (digital items) through a unique distribution platform using blockchain. Konami’s Background This isn’t the first time around for Konami using blockchain-based elements as part of its operations. In fact, the company has already released an NFT collection to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of Castlevania, one of its most beloved franchises. The NFT collection, which features videos and images of some of the first games of the franchise, was successful and managed to raise over $160K in January. As a result, the company signaled in favor of further adopting this technology, noting it would be using the same for “content preservation” purposes. Other Japanese players have the edge when it comes to the metaverse and Web3 developments. Bandai Namco is already working on establishing its own multi-IP metaverse, and in February stated it would be investing $130 million toward this goal. Square Enix has also included blockchain and play-to-earn as part of its business strategy, even announcing the launch of a Final Fantasy-themed NFT collection for next year. Sega also recently announced it will produce its own blockchain-based, IP-licensed game, using Japanese blockchain provider Oasys to support its decentralized components. Yellen was joined in that push by Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, who virtually addressed a World Bank meeting of top financial officials on Wednesday. Yellen also raised the issue at a private meeting this week at the International Monetary Fund with European Commission Executive Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and European Economy Commissioner Paolo Gentiloni, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private meetings. She raised the issue again at a subsequent meeting of all E.U. finance ministers, the person said. New projections from the World Bank last week suggest that Ukraine’s economy will contract by 35 percent this year, and the country’s financial officials say inflation could hit 40 percent early next year — close to economists’ definition of “hyperinflation.” Even as the situation on the battlefield has turned in Ukraine’s favor, the nation’s exports have plummeted, tax revenue has crumbled, millions of people have fled and Russian attacks have pulverized critical infrastructure, including the electrical grid. International assistance has not proved enough to make up the gap. Zelensky on Wednesday said Ukraine needs as much as $38 billion in emergency economic help from the West for next year’s budget alone. That figure excludes the additional $350 billion the World Bank has estimated will be necessary for Ukraine’s long-term reconstruction once the war ends. On Wednesday, Yellen again stressed the need for rapid disbursement of direct cash payments — rather than loans that have to be repaid — to assist the country’s economy. Yellen’s comments were a thinly veiled reference to the E.U., which has almost entirely given its aid in loans. “Donors need to keep stepping up,” Yellen said. “The scale, predictability and grant component of disbursements must improve.” Both Ukrainian and U.S. officials are careful not to antagonize their European allies with harsh public condemnations but have still conveyed their sense that the commission is moving too slowly. “I know they’re very frustrated,” one former senior Treasury official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to reflect private conversations with Treasury leadership. “The U.S. officials want to see Europe deliver far more quickly … They want Europe to deliver far more expeditiously. They need to deliver.” In a statement, European Commission spokeswoman Nuyts Veerle strongly rejected the idea that the E.U. had been slow or inadequate in its disbursement of aid. The overall commitment of “Team Europe” — including not just the E.U., but also its member states and financial institutions such as the European Investment Bank — amounts to roughly 19 billion euros, Veerle said. The European Commission is also pledging to have disbursed 10.2 billion euros in emergency economic support for Ukraine by the end of the year, excluding military aid, Veerle said. While the vast majority of the assistance is in the form of loans rather than grants, those loans are made on highly favorable terms to the borrowers. Part of the challenge is that such decisions by E.U. capitals have to be supported unanimously, creating the opportunity for roadblocks, whereas the United States can approve aid without having to consult other nations. “The E.U. has been welcoming millions of refugees from Ukraine and has been taking care of them on E.U. territory. Europe faces a severe economic slowdown and likely recession this winter as Russia chokes off the continent’s sources of energy in retaliation for sanctions imposed over the war. Inflation in Europe is continuing unabated, and energy prices have soared higher there than in the United States. But the economic situation in Ukraine is worse, and warnings have accelerated in recent weeks despite the nation’s victories on the battlefield over Russia. Ukraine’s tax revenue is now almost entirely devoted to military operations, forcing the country’s government to print new money — driving up inflation and forcing down the value of its currency. Inflation is already above 30 percent, and the country’s currency, the hryvnia, has fallen in value by roughly 70 percent, according to Maryan Zablotsky, a member of Ukraine’s parliament who sits on its finance committee. More digital nomads are staying put in one destination versus traveling more frequently too. Countries are responding to the trend. Now there are almost 40 special visas for digital nomads, including Spain, Mexico, Germany and Australia. To find the right destination, people are considering factors such as cost of living, visa requirements, and health and safety of the place. With over 70% of digital nomads being women, especially solo women travelers, making sure their destination is relatively safe and healthy tends to be top of mind.  Is it safe for women to solo travel, live abroad? The global prevalence of violence against women can make solo travel seem like a risky choice. Women often have to face societal customs and laws in certain countries and are considered to be easier targets by criminals compared to men. Besides breathtaking nature and outdoor adventures, the country had some of the strictest quarantine requirements in the world during the height of the pandemic.  Working holiday visas are offered to young people between the ages of 18 and 30 (or 35 for some countries) and let you travel and work in New Zealand for a year. (Although U.K. and Canadian citizens can stay for 23 months.) Requirements for this visa include not bringing dependents nor accepting a permanent job. You don’t have to work during your stay, but you do need to show evidence that you can meet the cost of living – people will need to make at least 350 NZ a month or 4200 NZ for the 12 months. The State Department issued New Zealand with a “Level 1” Travel Advisory in July, noting that the crime rate is “relatively low,” but thieves can target tourists in crowded public areas.  Portugal With a GHI ranking of 33 and a GPI ranking of 6, Portugal has recently become a hotspot for expats – the number of Americans who moved to Portugal rose by 45% last year, driving gentrification among locals. The country draws people in with its warm climate, access to health care and affordable cost of living. Earlier this summer, the country announced it will soon offer a visa specifically for digital nomads. “Portugal is a country for immigration. Every year, we receive thousands of immigrants seeking opportunities in our country,” Ana Catarina Mendes, Minister in the Cabinet of the Prime Minister and for Parliamentary Affairs, said in a statement. “A country that wishes to welcome immigrants as it wishes its emigrants to be welcomed too.” Currently, the country offers a two-year D7 Visa to retirees or people who make more than a year’s worth of minimum wage in passive income, like from rental income, which may apply to some digital nomads. This visa also allows you to travel throughout the Schengen Area, although you’ll need to spend six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months in Portugal. Unlike other long-stay visas, the D7 welcomes families as long as you can prove you can financially support them too. Portugal was given a “Level 1” Travel Advisory by the State Department on Tuesday in response to possible terrorist attacks across Europe. People should also watch out for “crimes of opportunity,” such as pickpocketing.
