This Is How OYO Became Profitable At Operating Level In Q1FY23, Reveals Jefferies – Punjab News Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/this-is-how-oyo-became-profitable-at-operating-level-in-q1fy23-reveals-jefferies-punjab-news-express/ NEW DELHI: As hospitality major OYO firms up plans for its initial public offering (IPO), financial services company Jefferies says that while the company saw one of the strongest first quarters in many years, there are some challenges that it needs to address to maintain growth momentum. According to the report the two major factors that have helped OYO improve unit economics as it turned EBITDA (adjusted) positive in the first quarter of FY23 is the broad-based improvement in travel trends and business restructuring by the company. Even though OYO faces stiff competition from traditional hotel companies, short-term vacation rental companies, other online travel agencies (including Super Apps hosting peer OTAs) and competition from search engines in attracting, engaging and retaining customers on platform, the Covid-induced downturn gave OYO an opportunity to rethink the scale, size and cost of operations and shifted its focus on refining the hotel footprints by increasing profits per hotel according to Jefferies. Its revenue shows steady momentum across all segments in Q1FY23. “OYO’s ability to provide customers with access to a broad range of high-quality storefronts at a compelling price point, coupled with brand strength and attractive loyalty and referral programs, provide organic and repeat demand for storefront bookings, resulted in increased Gross Booking Value (GBV) for the company, ” quotes the report. The Gross Booking Value (GBV) per hotel per month modestly recovered in FY22 and has seen a sharp jump in 1QFY23 after bottoming out in FY21. The report also highlighted that the number and variety of storefronts is a measure of width and reach of the platform and is a key value proposition to the customers. Therefore, growth in patron base and storefront footprint globally will be critical for the organisation. It will also have to keep the focus on growing the gross bookings value (GBV) per storefront — organically, including from various loyalty programs to incentivize bookings from new customers and drive growth. The report also referred to OYOs asset-light, technology-driven business model that has enabled it to scale business globally and provided it with a competitive advantage in the short-stay accommodation space, besides accelerated development and adoption of technology/products to reduce operating costs and reposition its offerings. OYO’s adjusted Gross Margin improved from 9.7 per cent in FY20 to 33.2 per cent in FY21 and 40-41 per cent in FY22/1QFY23. In FY22, Adjusted EBITDA losses narrowed to Rs 4.7 billion from Rs 17.5 billion losses in FY21, and the company turned profitable on EBITDA (Adjusted) in 1QFY23. In addition, the company’s Contribution profit improved from 5.1 per cent in FY20 to 22-23 per cent in FY22 and 1QFY23. OYO’s employee expenses decreased by 63 per cent YoY in FY21 (grew 7 per cent YoY in FY22) driven by rationalisation of employees, centralisation of key functions in strategy, better revenue management, moving corporate support teams from a country level to a regional level, rationalisation of non-core businesses and increased automation led operational efficiency. However, the report also pointed out that OYO is presently focused in India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Europe since they are more mature in terms of the scale of storefront footprints and unit economics. These markets together account for 90 per cent of its storefronts globally.

NATO Holds Nuclear Talks Amid War Tensions, Putin Threats – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nato-holds-nuclear-talks-amid-war-tensions-putin-threats-69news-wfmz-tv/ BRUSSELS (AP) — NATO’s secretive Nuclear Planning Group met Thursday as the military alliance presses ahead with plans to hold a nuclear exercise next week as concerns deepen over President Vladimir Putin’s insistence that he will use any means necessary to defend Russian territory. Defense ministers led the session, which usually happens once or twice a year, at NATO headquarters in Brussels. It comes against a backdrop of high tension as some NATO allies, led by the U.S., supply Ukraine with advanced weapons and munitions to defend itself against Russian aerial attacks. NATO is keeping a wary eye on Russia’s movements, but has so far seen no change in its nuclear posture. But additional uncertainty comes from the fact that Russia is also due to hold its own nuclear exercises soon, possibly at the same time as NATO or just after, according to NATO diplomats. That could complicate the 30-country military organization’s reading of the war and of Moscow’s intentions. “Russia will also be conducting its annual exercise, I think, the week after or just after the annual exercise,” U.K. Defence Secretary Ben Wallace told reporters. But “what we don’t want is to do things out of routine.” “This is a routine exercise and it’s all about readiness,” Wallace said, just as “NATO’s meeting is all about making sure we are ready for anything. I mean, that is the job of this alliance — to make sure that the 30 partners together are ready for what is thrown at us. And we have to continue to work at that.” NATO’s exercise, dubbed “Steadfast Noon,” is held around the same time every year and runs for about one week. It involves fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear warheads, but doesn’t involve any live bombs. Conventional jets, and surveillance and refueling aircraft also routinely take part. Fourteen NATO member countries will be involved in the exercise, which was planned before Russia invaded Ukraine on Feb. 24. The main part of the maneuvers will be held more than 1,000 kilometers (625 miles) from Russia. NATO as an organization doesn’t possess any weapons. The nuclear weapons nominally linked to the alliance remain under the firm control of three member countries — the U.S., the U.K. and France. But France insists on maintaining its nuclear independence and doesn’t take part in Nuclear Planning Group meetings. Earlier this week, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned that it “would be absolutely the wrong signal to send” if the world’s biggest security organization were to cancel the maneuvers. “NATO’s firm, predictable behavior, our military strength, is the best way to prevent escalation,” Stoltenberg said. “If we now created the grounds for any misunderstandings, miscalculations in Moscow about our willingness to protect and defend all allies, we would increase the risk of escalation.” With the Russian army retreating under the blows of Ukrainian forces armed with Western weapons, Putin raised the stakes by annexing four Ukrainian regions and declaring a partial mobilization of up to 300,000 reservists to buttress the crumbling front line. As his war plans have gone awry, Putin has repeatedly signaled that he could resort to nuclear weapons to protect the Russian gains. The threat is also aimed at deterring NATO nations from sending more sophisticated weapons to Ukraine. Stoltenberg described Putin’s spiraling nuclear rhetoric as “dangerous and reckless,” and underlined that the allies “have also conveyed clearly to Russia that it will have severe consequences if they use nuclear weapons in any way.” Follow the AP’s coverage of the war at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About STAT
The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About STAT
The Global Diabetes Crisis Few Are Talking About – STAT https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-global-diabetes-crisis-few-are-talking-about-stat/ In the numbers game of disease statistics, type 1 diabetes takes a back seat to type 2 diabetes, which accounts for more than 95% of diabetes cases around the globe. But the impact of type 1 diabetes (T1D), which tends to emerge earlier in life and can quickly kill an individual if it goes unrecognized or untreated, is huge. Its global burden, however, hasn’t been well understood — until now. With the proper care and treatment, including access to insulin, which people with type 1 diabetes must use every day, individuals can live long and healthy lives with this disease. But many in the United States and countries around the world do not have access to even the most basic treatments. To assess the impact of type 1 diabetes, JDRF, the organization I lead, and its global partners created the Type 1 Diabetes Index (T1D Index), a first-of-its-kind tool, to identify and address the wide gaps in knowledge about the incidence and impact of type 1 diabetes country by country. With this knowledge, interventions can be developed that will save lives and improve the health of those living with the disease. advertisement The index quantifies that, without modern care, type 1 diabetes shortens lives, kills people, and is incredibly costly for the individuals living with the disease, their families, and health care systems. An individual diagnosed with the disease at age 10 loses an average of 32 healthy years of life. Based on birth cohorts from 1950 to 2040, 6.85 million lives will be lost by 2040 if people universally do not have access to interventions to diagnose and treat type 1 diabetes, and it stands to become one of the world’s largest deadly chronic health conditions, of similar scale and impact to HIV. advertisement This crisis can be forestalled, and the lives of millions of people can be improved, with relatively modest investments. It is my hope that the T1D Index offers governments and health organizations an essential starting point for prioritizing research on type 1 diabetes and interventions for it. The index can also help empower people living with T1D and their caregivers advocate for the care and support they deserve. My colleagues and I at JDRF have heard stories from around the world about dramatically disparate standards of care. This is not just an issue in the developing world, but also in wealthy countries. My brother, Stephen, and I have lived with T1D for 45 and 38 years respectively. He was diagnosed with it at age 3; I was diagnosed at age 13. Advances in treating type 1 diabetes like improved insulins, continuous glucose monitors, and automated insulin-delivery systems have transformed our lives for the better. Yet others with T1D in the U.S., as well those in wealthy and low-income countries, lack access to these improvements. According to the T1D Index, since the inception of modern medical reporting on T1D, more than 300,000 Americans would still be alive today if they had not died due to complications and challenges associated with the disease, including many who rationed insulin due to cost. This is unacceptable. Clinicians in Malawi shared with us that if children with type 1 diabetes were able to get a prompt diagnosis and basic care, their lives could be extended by decades. In Mexico and Brazil, the standard of care is years behind, leading to devastating complications such as blindness or kidney disease, and premature death. These stories are compelling, but not enough to drive policy change and new investments on their own. As is the case with many challenges, data can help drive change. The T1D Index has helped identify four key interventions that can change the current trajectory for people with T1D: enable better education and training to accurately diagnose T1D create easy access to insulin and tools to measure blood sugar ensure that everyone living with T1D has access to technology that automates blood sugar monitoring and insulin delivery invest in more research into emerging ways to prevent, treat, and cure T1D. With the global snapshot of type 1 diabetes provided by the T1D Index, advocacy organizations like JDRF, working with policymakers, nongovernmental organizations, and other decision makers around the world, can develop targeted strategies to help implement these interventions and deliver quality care to people with T1D so they can thrive no matter where they live. If something as simple as a correct diagnosis and basic care can extend lives by decades, the world is morally obliged to act. Aaron J. Here Is The Latest SEC Sports News From The Associated Press – Beckley Register-Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/here-is-the-latest-sec-sports-news-from-the-associated-press-beckley-register-herald/ UNDATED (AP) — Alabama’s Will Anderson and Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker and Josh Heupel are some of the Southeastern Conference’s top performers so far this season. Anderson is the unanimous pick as The Associated Press’ top SEC defensive player at the midway point. Hooker was voted as the top offensive player and Heupel was the unanimous choice as top SEC coach of the first half. The midseason awards were voted on by AP reporters covering the SEC. The third-ranked Crimson Tide and sixth-ranked Volunteers play this weekend in Knoxville. UNDATED (AP) — This weekend in college football includes a season-high six games matching teams ranked in the AP Top 25. Three of those games also match unbeaten teams. They include No. 3 Alabama at No. 6 Tennessee; No. 10 Penn State at No. 5 Michigan; and No. 8 Oklahoma State at No. 13 TCU. By Saturday night, the championship picture could be very different. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo calls it a Super Saturday. LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky coach John Calipari says on social media that consensus national player of the year Oscar Tshiebwe will have a “minor” 15-minute procedure to “clean some things up” in his knee. Calipari did not specify in a Twitter post on Tuesday which knee will be treated. The school did not have specifics on how long Tshiebwe will be out. The coach said he sat the 6-foot-9 senior forward for practices on Saturday and Monday but that Tshiebwe pushed to participate in Sunday’s pro day workout before NBA scouts in what Calipari described as “an unbelievable performance.” UNDATED (AP) — It could well be among the marquee quarterback matchups of the season: Alabama’s Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young versus Tennessee’s rising star Hendon Hooker. Young’s sprained right shoulder was being re-evaluated, but coach Nick Saban seemed somewhat optimistic about his status for the Saturday’s game. Hooker and Young are still among the leading Heisman Trophy candidates. Jalen Milroe started for Alabama in a squeaker over Texas A&M. UNDATED (AP) — Ole Miss’ Jonathan Mingo is coming off of the biggest game of his career. He broke the receiving record set by current New York Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore by getting 247 yards against Vanderbilt. It was the most yards of any FBS player in a game this season and vaulted Mingo into the Southeastern Conference lead with 507 yards entering Saturday’s game with Auburn. Mingo has battled injury in his career and been overshadowed by 1,000-yard receivers Moore and Dontario Drummond. Now, he’s among the elites for No. 9 Ole Miss. Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. Wall Street Questions Facebooks Desperate Metaverse Push Business Insider
Wall Street Questions Facebook’s ‘Desperate’ Metaverse Push – Business Insider https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/wall-street-questions-facebooks-desperate-metaverse-push-business-insider/ Mark Zuckerberg made another pitch for his metaverse this week, failing to placate investors. One analyst called it a “desperate” and likely doomed attempt by the company to reinvent itself. Facebook stock went down to its lowest price since late 2018 after the event. Investors were not impressed by Facebook’s latest product reveals, which included among other things, the launch of avatar legs – showing that the company still has a ways to go before investors feel better about its costly push into building the metaverse. The company’s annual developer conference Connect this week focused on the metaverse, envisioned by founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg as an immersive digital world that will displace the current iteration of the internet led by smartphones and personal computers. But Neil Campling, an analyst and head of research at Mirabaud, summed it up in one word: “desperate.” “No wonder investors are in despair,” he added. Shares of Facebook, which last year changed its name to Meta, dropped again on Wednesday to $127, their lowest price since late 2018. “Captain Zuckerberg continues to steer the Meta ship towards an unknown path called the Metaverse and is determined to splurge billions and billions of dollars in an endeavor to reinvent itself,” Campling said. Campling estimated that Facebook will spend around $15 billion this year on the metaverse. That’s in addition to the $10 billion it lost last year. He was not impressed by the various advances Facebook showed off at Connect, like an upgraded Quest Pro headset, more expressive and photo realistic avatars (unavailable) and a version of avatars with legs (available sometime next year). Avatars currently come only from the torso up. “So, the greatest development of burning $10 billion of cash flow on this endeavor is legs?” Campling asked. “Fiscal discipline has become the focus of most corporates in 2022 – but Meta seems determined to follow its own risky path.” Even boosters of VR technology, like John Carmack, the former CTO of Oculus who advises Facebook on the metaverse and its headsets, admitted to being “grumpy” during a talk at Connect about the company’s rate of progress. He appeared throughout his session as an avatar, mostly in a version that is currently available to users. It looked much less refined than the pre-recorded version displayed by Zuckerberg and other executives during the conference. Carmack noted, too, continued frustration around the reliability of the Quest 2 headsets. He said a Facebook employee posted internally of the difficulty using a headset and that it took 20 minutes to figure out. “It pains me to hear people say that they don’t even get their headset out to show off at the company because they know it’s gonna be a mess of charging and updating before they can make it do something cool,” Carmack said. “VR should be a delight to demo for your friends.” At the same time, Carmack noted that these products have made improvements in graphics and latency issues. And the Quest Pro, while much more expensive than Quest 2, is “a very fine piece of engineering,” he said. Some on Wall Street are also willing to give Facebook more of a chance to prove itself, despite the costs. “If they find a real product market fit and it takes off, no one will remember how they got there,” said Mark Shmulik, managing director and senior analyst at Bernstein. “If they become the company in this space that everyone has to work with, the size of the business could be massive.” Still, it’s a long way from certain that Facebook’s bet will be a success. “If we have some progress then,” Shmulik said, “it’ll give them another year.” Are you a Facebook employee or someone with insight to share? Estonia’s Katana Bags €36M For Its Manufacturing And Inventory Software That Helps Scale Businesses – Silicon Canals https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/estonias-katana-bags-e36m-for-its-manufacturing-and-inventory-software-that-helps-scale-businesses-silicon-canals/ Katana’s management team and angel investors: (L to R) Hannes Kert, Kristi Schumann, Brett Astrid Võmma, Priit Kaasik, Gristel Tali, Kristjan Vilosius, Oliver Vesi | Image credit: Katana As part of the deal, Michiel Kotting, a partner at Northzone, will join Katana’s board. Kotting says, “We’ve been deeply impressed with Kristjan and the team, who combine strong product skills, essential to building something as complicated and powerful as a basic ERP system, with commercial savviness and drive. We believe this unlocks the next category in modern-day, modular, user-friendly software, and has the potential to be a defining business in that category.” Katana was also supported by their angel investors, including Sergei Anikin (former CTO at Pipedrive, also serving as Katana’s Chairman of the Supervisory Board), Sten Tamkivi (co-founder of NFTPort and former Skype executive), and Ott Kaukver (CTO of Checkout and former CTO of Twilio). Fund utilisation Katana says it will use the funds to scale its features for small to medium-sized manufacturers, allowing them to manage D2C and B2B sales using a single software solution. To support these plans, Katana continues to expand its international team, which increased from 30 to over 140. As the company serves additional markets and larger clients, the addition of new product development teams will speed up feature releases, while the expansion of customer support teams will guarantee that outstanding customer satisfaction remains a major differentiator. Kristjan Vilosius, Katana’s founder and CEO, says, “From offering software to single-person workshops to bigger and bigger manufacturers over time, Katana now serves over 1300 companies across 80 countries. This investment helps us continue to develop a manufacturing ERP platform customers love, as well as offer support to an under-served market which is having its own incredible renaissance.” The era of “Made in China” is over “Made in China” era of production comes to an end as manufacturers are moving closer to customers by selling directly through their own websites or online marketplaces, sometimes in conjunction with a B2B strategy. With so many alternatives available to them, consumers tend to choose brands that more closely match their particular beliefs, favouring sustainable, ethically produced, or organic goods over those that are mass-manufactured. An increase in direct-to-consumer production has led to a surge of new manufacturers searching for software that will help them run their businesses holistically, tying together aspects of their operations beyond inventory management. Most traditional business suites for manufacturing are yet to catch up with today’s usability standards, proving a barrier as they lack modern API functionality and generally do not integrate well with business essentials like e-commerce stores, accounting platforms, and shipping operators. Because of this, the ERP market is renowned for having poor UX/UI and low customer satisfaction.  This is where Katana steps in. The company brings manufacturing software into the digital era and claims to match the standards of consumer technology and other SaaS verticals. “Everything you need to keep manufacturing” Founded in 2017 by Hannes Kert, Kristjan Vilosius, and Priit Kaasik, Katana is a modern manufacturing and inventory software for scaling businesses. Its plug-and-play manufacturing ERP (enterprise resource planning) software for SMEs supports real-time workflows, boosting productivity and enabling material inventory control. Katana claims to offer everything companies need to keep manufacturing, uniting all the processes, tools, and software that manufacturers require with an “easy-to-use” ERP. Since closing a Series A in 2021, Katana launched an open API, app marketplace, and over 60 integrations and feature releases. The platform provides compatibility with popular e-commerce sales channels and accounting tools such as Shopify, Amazon, WooCommerce, QuickBooks, and Xero, among others. Manufacturing companies subscribe using their credit card after going through a 14-day, free trial. During the trial, they can test the functionalities and get assistance if needed. The subscription cost depends on the size of the client’s business and the complexity of the functionalities it needs.  Vilosius says, “If you’re a five- to 20-member team, selling cosmetics or some cool gadgets through Shopify, a Katana subscription might cost $100-300 (approx €82-246) a month. A larger factory with 30 or 50 people might pay $400-1000 (approx €328-821) a month. We also have annual plans which offer discounts.” Katana’s revenues come from the monthly or annual subscription packages it offers to manufacturers. October Becomes Worst Month For Crypto Hacks With Two Weeks To Go – Yahoo Finance https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/october-becomes-worst-month-for-crypto-hacks-with-two-weeks-to-go-yahoo-finance/ October has become the worst-ever month for crypto-related crimes with over $718 million in overall losses, and that’s with two more weeks to go before the month ends. Data pointed out by Chainalysis on Thursday noted that the amount was stolen from several decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols across eleven different attacks. “2022 will likely surpass 2021 as the biggest year for hacking on record,” Chainalysis researchers wrote. “So far, hackers have grossed over $3 billion across 125 hacks.” “Despite the current bear market, we’re seeing a lot of activity among hackers, who are targeting various protocols,” said Jasper Lee, audit tech lead at crypto auditing firm Sooho.io. “For those protocols or Dapps [decentralized apps] which have not been thoroughly audited, they make for easy and reliable short-term profit. Poorly protected protocols are low-hanging fruit for hackers, who make easy pickings of their too-easily accessed locked,” Lee added. Attackers gained over $3.2 billion in 2021. But this year was off to an even-rocky start with a $325 million exploit of popular cross-chain service Wormhole, which was followed by a $625 million attack on Axie Infinity’s Ronin bridge, and then a $200 million exploit of the Nomad bridge. Attack vectors in the crypto sector range from exploiting bridges, a blockchain-based tool that allows users to transact between different networks, to market manipulation, where rogue traders utilize millions of dollars to move thinly-traded markets in their favor to net several multiples of the initial capital deployed. Over three bridges were breached this month alone, Chainalysis said, with an attack on a BNB Chain-based bridge over the weekend saw exploiters illicitly gaining over $100 million after the bridge was exploited for $566 million. Then on Monday, the layer 1 blockchain QANplatform was the target of a bridge hack that resulted in the theft of nearly $1 million in QANX tokens. Elsewhere, Tuesday night saw $100 million in liquidity drained from Solana’s popular Mango Markets trading protocol after a rogue trader manipulated spot token prices to borrow the entirety of the protocol’s assets against their position.

Euro Zone Bond Yields Just Off Multi-Year Highs Ahead Of U.S. Data – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/euro-zone-bond-yields-just-off-multi-year-highs-ahead-of-u-s-data-reuters-com/ Oct 13 (Reuters) – Euro zone borrowing costs edged lower on Thursday as investors paused for breath ahead of key U.S. economic data after driving government bond yields to fresh multi-year highs. U.S. producer prices increased more than expected in September, but underlying goods prices posted their weakest reading in nearly 2-1/2 years. Concerns about stability in the UK gilt market weighed on bond prices after the Bank of England governor told pension funds they had until Friday to fix liquidity problems before the bank withdraws support. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The Financial Times later quoted sources as saying the BoE had privately indicated that its emergency bond buybacks could be extended. Markets repriced their inflation expectations ahead of U.S. data. A key market gauge of long-term inflation expectations rose to its highest since May at 2.3% on Wednesday while forwards on euro short-term rates (ESTR) are now peaking in November 2023 around 3.1%. Germany’s 10-year government bond yield , the benchmark of the bloc, fell 2 basis points (bps) to 2.32% after hitting its highest since August 2011 at 2.423% on Wednesday. U.S. consumer price numbers due later on Thursday will be the last before the November Federal Reserve policy meeting. Analysts said that, while the Fed was unlikely to shift from a 75 bps hike, signs that inflation is yet to peak might fuel further hawkish rhetoric. Fed policymakers agreed they needed to move to a more restrictive policy stance and maintain that for some time, a readout of last month’s two-day meeting showed on Wednesday. “Higher-than-predicted figures would probably have a stronger negative impact on U.S. Treasuries, and fixed income securities in general, than lower-than-expected data would,” Unicredit analysts said. Meanwhile, remarks from European Central Bank officials supported expectations for a further rise in euro zone bond yields. ECB President Christine Lagarde said on Wednesday a debate about mopping up excess cash – quantitative tightening (QT) — got underway. “With investors apparently staying away from duration, the ECB probably remains among the few last buyers at the long-end, as even Lagarde yesterday confirmed that the ECB is discussing reverting quantitative easing (QE),” Commerzbank analysts said. Dutch central bank chief Klaas Knot said on Wednesday two rate hikes would take the ECB to the so-called neutral rate, but that is unlikely to be enough, and the bank needs to go into restrictive territory. Italy’s 10-year government bond yield fell 3.5 bps to 4.76%. It hit its highest since February 2013 at 4.927% on Sept. 28. The spread between Italian and German 10-year yields was at 242 bps. TSMC Cuts Capex On Tool Delays, Demand Woes; Cautious On Outlook – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tsmc-cuts-capex-on-tool-delays-demand-woes-cautious-on-outlook-reuters/ Q3 profit T$280.9 bln vs T$265.64 bln analyst view Q3 revenue up 36% on year at $20.23 bln Sees Q4 revenue up 29% to $19.9-$20.7 billion TAIPEI, Oct 13 (Reuters) – Taiwanese chipmaker TSMC (2330.TW) cut its annual investment budget by at least 10% for 2022 and struck a more cautious note than usual on upcoming demand, flagging challenges from rising inflationary costs and predicting a chip downturn next year. Speaking on the latest set of U.S. export controls aimed at slowing China’s progress in advanced chip manufacturing, TSMC CEO C.C. Wei said on Thursday that it had obtained a one-year authorisation that covered its factory in Nanjing, China. The new rules require companies looking to supply Chinese chipmakers with advanced gear to obtain a licence from the U.S. Department of Commerce, though Washington is expected to spare some foreign companies operating in China. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “Based on our initial reading and feedback from customers the new regulations sets the control threshold at a very high-end specification, primarily used for AI or supercomputing applications. Therefore our initial assessment is the impact to TSMC is limited and manageable,” Wei said. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC) , the world’s largest contract chipmaker, makes most of its chips in Taiwan. After posting an 80% surge in third-quarter profit, the strongest growth in two years, TSMC said it was being more conservative in planning investments for 2023. “We expect probably in 2023 the semiconductor industry will likely decline, but TSMC also is not immune,” Wei told a media call. TSMC’s dominance in making some of the world’s most advanced chips for high-end customers such as Apple Inc (AAPL.O) and Qualcomm Inc (QCOM.O) had shielded it from the downturn flagged by chipmakers including AMD (AMD.O) and Micron Technology Inc (MU.O). The Taiwanese company’s commentary on Thursday, though, was more in line with industry concerns about decades-high inflation, rising interest rates and COVID-19 lockdowns in China that have squeezed the consumer electronics market. TOOL DELAYS TSMC, Asia’s most valuable listed firm, cut its capital expenditure (capex) for 2022 to around $36 billion. In July, the company said it would skim the lower end of its previous capex guidance of $40 billion to $44 billion this year, with some expenses pushed to next year because of a delay in the delivery of some chip-making equipment. “About half of the change is due to capacity optimisation based on the current medium-term outlook and the other half is due to continued tool delivery challenges,” Chief Financial Officer Wendell Huang told a media call. For the fourth-quarter, TSMC forecast a 29% rise in revenue to between $19.9 billion and $20.7 billion, compared with $15.74 billion a year earlier. The company said its data centre and auto businesses remained steady for now, and that its business overall will be more resilient than others. “We say 2023 is still a growth year for TSMC, and the overall industry probably will decline,” said Wei. Only in July, TSMC said it had seen little impact from the current down cycle in the sector and long-term demand for its chips was “firmly in place” thanks to businesses shopping for high-performance computing chips used in 5G networks and data centres, as well as an increased use of chips in gadgets and vehicles. Net profit for the third quarter ended September rose to T$280.9 billion ($8.81 billion), compared with the T$265.64 billion average of 21 analyst estimates compiled by Refinitiv. Revenue for the quarter climbed 36% to $20.23 billion, versus TSMC’s prior estimated range of $19.8 billion to $20.6 billion. China accounted for just 8% of revenue in the third quarter, down from 13% in the second. Shares in TSMC have fallen almost 36% so far this year, giving it a market value of $323.7 billion. The stock fell 0.6% on Thursday, compared with a 2.1% fall for the benchmark index (.TWII). New IPhones, Samsung Phones Sold Without Chargers, Earphones, Nigerians Kick – Legit.ng https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-iphones-samsung-phones-sold-without-chargers-earphones-nigerians-kick-legit-ng/ Apple and Samsung have resolved to ship their latest phones to Africa without the needed accessories The phone manufacturers cited environmental issues and plastic waste as the issue Nigerians, however, refused the assertion by the two makers saying they want to burden consumers with extra costs Frontline phone manufacturers have resolved to ship phones without accessories such as earphones and chargers, citing environmental issues. The move has put pressure on consumers who have to shop for the accessories separately, incurring additional costs. Nigerians kick over Samsung and iPhones sold without accessories Credit: Joy 1000 Source: Getty Images Samsung joins Apple to ditch accessories Samsung began the practice after Apple ditched the idea and stated that it wanted to curtail plastic waste and environmental degradation. PAY ATTENTION: Share your outstanding story with our editors! Please reach us through info@corp.legit.ng! The latest iPhone 14 and 14 Pro shipments, including the Samsung S21 and S22 series, came without chargers and earphones. The Brazilian example Last month, the Brazilian government banned the sale of iPhones without chargers. The Ministry of Justice and Public Security fined the company $2.34 million for the infraction. According to the order, environmental factors are insufficient for selling the products without the requisite accessories. However, consumers in Nigeria have lamented the decision of the top phone manufacturers as cumbersome and extra costs for them after coughing out huge sums to purchase already expensive gadgets. Nigerians react on social media On Twitter, Nigerians vented their anger at the phone makers for isolating them. “Now you buy a charger and air pods after buying a phone. What’s next? Phones won’t come with batteries, and you have to buy that separately? I cannot believe we are okay with this. Vehicle manufacturers are taking notes; soon you will buy a car and then buy a battery and tyres separately. Let’s be watching! “I really hope Europe does something about this so it can cascade across the world, America is the global HQ of capitalism so nothing will happen there,” he added. @SuogheneB said: “My Samsung came without an earpiece I demanded to know why and was told some even come without a charger. Not cool at all.” @robisky6 said: “This is serious oh. So, a first-time iPhone user will have to go buy a charger separately if peradventure he doesn’t have a spare one. That’s like renting an apartment without a roof.” New features in iPhone that have been on Android for years Legit.ng reported that Apple hyped many new features at its iPhone 14 event last week, but those features are very familiar to many Android users. iPhone users are entirely into Apple’s ecosystem and may not know that many of the features the company unveiled with glee have been in Android devices for years. Apple’s much-touted reality distortion field is also a reminder not to believe every claim by Apple. Source: Legit.ng

Crypto News Today: What Are The Top 3 Under-Hyped Crypto Coins Today Stellar Shiba Inu And Moshnake? | Bitcoinist
Crypto News Today: What Are The Top 3 Under-Hyped Crypto Coins Today – Stellar, Shiba Inu, And Moshnake? | – Bitcoinist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-news-today-what-are-the-top-3-under-hyped-crypto-coins-today-stellar-shiba-inu-and-moshnake-bitcoinist/ The coin market is similar to other financial markets worldwide. Every experienced trader knows the importance of hype and how it can spur an asset to new heights. As a result, most traders are found purchasing coins with plenty of hype around them. While this may seem like a sound strategy, an interesting thing to note is that occasionally certain coins spring out of nowhere and take over the market space. Many times, these explosive price movements occur when no one is paying attention. If you’re interested in trying another trading strategy, purchasing coins that are not the center of the news and waiting for them to bloom, this piece is for you. You’ll find a list of crypto tokens that are currently underhyped but with the potential for much more. Stellar An interesting thing to note about the coin market is that several innovative digital assets exist. Each of them offers something different. While you’ll find coins that are satisfied with solely being used as a means of payment and transfer of assets, others provide a unique type of utility. Stellar is one of those projects introducing an entirely different set of features to the coin market. This cryptocurrency is designed to support payment systems worldwide. It aims to be the first blockchain-based solution to unite the traditional financial system. Think of the near-limitless potential that traditional financial institutions would enjoy if their transactions could be processed seamlessly without lengthy confirmations. This means that Stellar can be used to process cryptocurrency transactions. Stellar was a decentralized protocol created by the Stellar Development Foundation. XLM is the token that powers this decentralized protocol. Through token burns, the Stellar Development Foundation plans to maintain a high price of its digital asset. These burns will reduce the overall total supply of Stellar. Shiba Inu Shiba Inu was among the most popular meme coins on the coin market. But the hype around it has died down significantly. After Shiba Inu proved it could compete with Dogecoin, many users started flocking to it. They believed that Shiba Inu would be the next top coin in the crypto space. There were some interesting things to note about Shiba Inu. To start with, Shiba Inu adopts a community-driven approach. This means that a community of users will determine its growth and development. Today, there are more than five hundred thousand users on Shiba Inu, and there are still more on the way. This active community of users is referred to as the Shiba Army. Also, Shiba Inu’s developers recognized some of the deficiencies of Dogecoin. That’s why they have ensured that Shiba Inu will have a limited market supply. Furthermore, Shiba Inu is more than a meme coin. It will be an ecosystem of cryptocurrency activities. Through the ShibaSwap, users can trade different cryptocurrencies for each other. Shiba Inu has introduced token burns to reduce the number of SHIB in circulation and force its value to increase. Moshnake Moshnake is a play-to-earn NFT game that has won the hearts of crypto users worldwide. Why have users fallen in love with this crypto token? Well, Moshnake adopts the same system as an early retro game. So, this game brings back unique memories for users. Anyone can be a part of Moshnake’s gaming world, but you’ll need to get your own NFT snake to get started. You can buy either viper, cobra, krait or mamba. However, you need to note that the prices and attributes of each of them are different. Players will earn money from taking care of their NFT snake. The longer it gets, the more money you’ll earn from it. Your snake will grow by feeding it eggs and other in-game items. To purchase these items, you’ll spend MSH tokens. I used the latter so much on long calls while I walked on the terrace, that one evening when I tried to clock more steps than usual, they popped out of my sweaty ears and got trampled under my feet. The AirPods Pro was my closest ally in my loneliness, as well as in the claustrophobic environs of Zoom calls. Now the latest version is here, and with some extra features on what was already the best truly wireless earphones out there. Truly wireless earphones are hard to improve, especially if the audio quality is already good. But Apple has thought out of the box on how this can be achieved, justifying the gap between device updates. There is almost no change in the design, or so you will think initially. But there are new elements here — a small lanyard loop, the ability to be charged using the Apple Watch charger, and some speaker grills. Why would the AirPods Pro case need speakers, you might wonder? Well, this is because Apple is trying to solve a problem faced by many users, that of misplacing the case. Now, one can use the FindMy app on your iPhone to seek and find the case, like you would use the Apple AirTags. If you are near the location and still can’t find it, there is the option to make the case play a tone, and that is why these have speakers. There are new elements here — a small lanyard loop, the ability to be charged using the Apple Watch charger and some speaker grills. (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan / Indian Express) I tested the feature first at the Ahmedabad Airport while waiting for a flight, and it worked wonderfully well in the crowded space with multiple iPhones for the device to send pings to. Back home in Noida, the AirPods still seem to show the Airport as its location, even though it’s been over 10 days since I returned from Gujarat. I think this is because the phone recognises that the AirPods are nearby and with the earbuds inside them. Setting up Apple devices is so easy. As soon as you take the AirPods Pro out of the box, the iPhone starts guiding you on what to do next. In the process, it also asks you to take photos of your ears, so that it can customise the spatial audio experience for you. Many other earphones, especially from Sony, do this now. You can also check if the silicone tips are fitting perfectly, and the app will recommend if you need a better seal. All this preps you for the experience that is coming. One can use the FindMy app on your iPhone to seek and find the case like you would use the Apple AirTags (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan / Indian Express) The first AirPods Pro had very good noise cancelling. And Apple has really outperformed itself with what it offers in this version. The noise cancelling is perfect in many aspects, and it is not just keeping the noise out. Once you wear the new AirPods Pro, it is as if you are wearing two pods of silence. They just negate the sharpest noises and soften everything else. And it does so without creating the sort of negative space that we in the initial years identified with noise cancelling. While travelling in the US, one thing you realise is how popular the AirPods are as a product. It is as if everyone is wearing a pair. And this is where the new adaptive transparency feature on the new AirPods Pro is so innovative. When in transparency mode, the AirPods immediately cancel out loud noises around you on their own. This is a great feature for those wearing these in urban environments. This is also where the difference between Apple’s noise cancellation and transparency modes needs to be underlined. You have the noise cancellation mode, where most ambient noise around you is negated. You can switch this off and hear what you would without the AirPods on. But in transparency mode, you actually hear a bit better than natural. This is the best mode to be in when you are with people or in a situation where you might have to interact with others, like at an airport. In a noisy restaurant, this will ensure you hear everyone at the dinner table. Once you wear the new AirPods Pro it is as if you are wearing two pods of silence. They just negate the sharpest noises and soften everything else. (Image credit: Nandagopal Rajan / Indian Express) There is a lot of ease with using the AirPods Pro, especially if you are a slave of the Apple ecosystem as I am. For one, the AirPods know when they are in your ears and switch on noise cancellation automatically. Then they connect by default to your iPhone. If you are working on the MacBook, it sends you prompts asking if you want to connect there. If you do, and then later shut the MacBook, it goes back to pairing with the iPhone. Yesterday, I was in the office canteen and didn’t realise I had left the iPhone on my desk. That’s when a call came in and I had to take it on the watch. Voila, the call was in my ear thanks to the AirPods, which I had previously not connected to the Apple Watch Ultra, which I was reviewing last week. That’s the ease of use you pay for, along with everything else. But how good is the audio quality? Well, let me tell you that spatial audio makes more sense on Apple devices than earphones from others. For instance, I was listening to the latest episode of my favourite Empire podcast at the Delhi airport, and the spatial audio made it feel like I was in a room flanked by William Dalrymple and Anita Anand. The sense of space these tiny AirPod Pros can recreate, even while listening to a simple podcast, is amazing. And this goes to a whole new level when you listen to something from Apple Music that is produced to be consumed with spatial audio and Dolby Atmos. Like Luke Combs performing Hurricane for a live audience literally transports you to Charlotte. It is as close as possible to the real thing. With something richer, for instance, the title track of Garuda Gamana Vrishabha Vahana, the AirPods show their versatility. They fill up your ears with layers and step up the game when needed, but without trampling on the details that add so much to the composition. This is almost like a microscopic study of the OST, with notes big and small getting the same amount of attention. Ramin Djawadi’s overture for Surreal is in a different spectrum altogether. The AirPod Pro’s near-surreal noise cancellation mixes with Djawadi’s soft notes to create a satin cushion into which you can sink in, and float to your own lonely worlds. I was listening to the latest episode of my favourite Empire podcast at the Delhi airport and the spatial audio made it feel like I was in a room flanked by William Dalrymple and Anita Anand. The AirPods are easy to control by pressing on their stems to pause, play or skip a song. And you swipe up the step to increase volume. But I preferred using the iPhone, which was almost always nearby, to do these. The battery life is good enough to last a week with regular usage. If like me, you also wear the AirPods all day long to cut out the noises that have started permeating our lives as we return to public spaces, then you can maybe squeeze in three days on a full charge. But the best thing for me is how this can be juiced up on the wireless charger I have on my office table. At Rs 26,900, the new AirPods Pro are not for everyone. But I would like to stick my neck out and call these the best truly wireless earphones around. Now, I am saying this not because these have the best audio profile at the moment. There are models from Sony and Sennheiser that maybe do a better job, but no other earphone offers such a complete package as the AirPods Pro. This is a bundle of the best noise cancelling, ease of use, convenience and audio quality, especially for Apple users. And that makes the AirPods Pro worth every penny you spend on them.

Corydon Man Dead In Police Shooting At Walmart Had Been Recently Released On Probation – Yahoo! Voices https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/corydon-man-dead-in-police-shooting-at-walmart-had-been-recently-released-on-probation-yahoo-voices/ Oct. 12—CLARKSVILLE — Indiana court records show the man shot and killed by a Clarksville police officer after brandishing a machete Monday night at the Walmart on Veterans Parkway had been sentenced to probation in Harrison County last week. According to court records, Daniel Francis Scott, 30, of Corydon, had taken a plea deal in a fraud case on Oct. 5. On Oct. 6 he was sentenced to probation. Indiana State Police Detective Matt Busick said employees of the store notified officers from the Clarksville Police Department of a suspicious male inside the store on Veterans Parkway around 11:15 p.m. The store closed at 11 p.m. and Scott refused requests to leave the store, authorities said. Police said he appeared to have “severe lacerations to the neck.” Three Clarksville officers were outside the store on an unrelated investigation and immediately responded. They saw Scott walking around inside the store. Police said that based on information and video gathered at the scene, detectives believe “Daniel Scott brandished a machete-style knife when approached and charged toward an officer. That officer fired his department handgun, striking Daniel Scott.” ISP said police began life-saving measures and called for an ambulance. Scott was taken to Clark Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said they believe the lacerations on Scott’s neck were likely self-inflicted. They also said Scott took both a razor and machete from the store, before being asked to leave. There have been at least four other fatal police shootings in the area since 2019. In each instance, police reports said the deceased had a weapon and refused to drop it before officers fired. Max David Helton, 43, died in a Clarksville police shooting in April 2019, after a domestic disturbance at 514 Howard St. Police said they were called to the home and saw Helton with a gun at the doorway. He then retreated into the house and barricaded himself and the original caller in the residence. Police encountered him again and he was still brandishing a handgun that he refused to drop after police told him to. At least one Clarksville police officer fired at Helton. Police then began aid and Helton was taken to University of Louisville Hospital before being pronounced dead. Clark County Prosecutor Jeremy Mull’s investigation into the incident concluded the officer’s use of force was justified. Justin Moore, of Owensboro, Kentucky, was shot and killed by a Palmyra police officer in May, after officials said he fired a weapon multiple times at authorities. The authorities responded to a call about a stranded motorist near an elementary school in Harrison County. Harrison County Prosecutor Otto Schalk said the officer was justified in his actions and that Moore had fired a shotgun at both the officer and a volunteer firefighter at the scene first. The firefighter, Jacob Tyler McClanahan, was struck by a bullet from Moore’s gun and died from his injuries. A Clarksville man, Malcolm Williams, was shot and killed by an ISP trooper in Jeffersonville in April 2020. Clark County Prosecutor Mull said in July 2020 that the officer was justified in using deadly force in the case. ISP’s account of the case said Williams fired three rounds at an ISP trooper before the gunfire was returned. Williams’ family is disputing the police account of the incident and filed a federal lawsuit in 2020 that said he was handing the officer the gun when he produced it and that he didn’t fire it. In July 2019 two Salem City police officers shot and killed Mark A. Naugle, 53, Scottsburg, on fairgrounds property after they said he charged at them with a hammer and refused to put down the hammer. Washington County Prosecutor Dustin Houchin said the officer was justified in this case. That same month police shot Stephen E. Fischer, 62, Charlestown, at a Love’s rest stop in Memphis. A preliminary investigation found that Clark County Sheriff’s Office deputies saw a man, later identified as Fischer, fire a pistol into the pavement of the parking lot at Love’s. An Indiana State Police news release said once officers were on the scene they first attempted to mitigate the situation before firing. Officers from Charlestown, Clark County, ISP, Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Sellersburg police were all on scene during the incident. At the time ISP said it wasn’t clear who fired the shot. There have been at least two non-fatal police shootings in Floyd County since 2019.

Trips To Italy, 6-Course Dinners And Endless Booze: Do Fancy Work Trips Really Stop Staff Leaving? – Euronews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/trips-to-italy-6-course-dinners-and-endless-booze-do-fancy-work-trips-really-stop-staff-leaving-euronews/ Imagine waking up to early morning yoga in the hills of Piedmont. Archery lessons overlooking a sprawling castle. Limousines, five-star hotels and Michelin-starred cuisine. But this isn’t a holiday. This is a company offsite. As we emerge from pandemic lockdowns and restrictions, many companies are maintaining a fully remote model. In some cases, in-person interactions have become a thing of the past, making it challenging to establish a strong company culture. For some companies, a team lunch doesn’t cut it anymore. They’re looking at far-flung locations, luxury hotel stays and meticulously designed experiences to quickly establish trust between employees that have only met through a screen. We spoke with some experts to learn more about the trend, and why it’s important.  What is a company offsite? Offsites are team-building days designed to bond employees, brainstorm, boost morale and establish a company culture. These are often an opportunity for managers to organise focus groups and explore the ‘big picture’ goals of the company. The ‘traditional’ image of a company team-building day is in a hotel conference room, with employees taking part in challenges and presentations. Now, and especially as we emerge from the pandemic, companies are blurring the line between work and vacation to keep a stronghold on company culture. What do company offsites look like today? There have been reports of Uber taking its employees to a Beyoncé concert in Las Vegas, a WeWork summer camp fueled with booze and sex, and Glossier’s lavish ‘glamping’ trips. The New York Post reports the owner of a Chicago recruiting company “used the money her company saved on office rent during 2020 and 2021 to shell out $80,000 [€82,500] for her employees to take a three-day weekend trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in February.” And at night, the booze always comes out. “It’s still one of the oldest tricks in the book if you want to get people to bond,” Johannes Hoyos, owner of the Piedmont-based Workation Village, says to Euronews Travel. “Give them some booze and then it’s gonna happen.” Aron Solomon, the head of strategy at Esquire Digital, also noted that all-nighters in Berlin and Paris, clubs, and lavish dinners are pretty commonplace for big firms. “Believe me, when they go to these offsites, they stay in the best hotels, they’re eating at the best restaurants – at least the big companies, the big law and accounting firms,” Solomon reveals. “We’re talking about a lot of expensive meals. We’re talking about limousines for airport transfers, $500 to $700 [€515-€720] night rooms.” Which destinations are most popular for company offsites? Solomon says US companies are looking to Europe more than ever, and expects this to continue into next year. He expects this is a reaction to the pandemic lockdowns. “People have missed Europe… A lot of these executives or people who get to go offsite, who might have travelled to Europe regularly, have missed it,” he says. “So the idea of a company doing an offsite kills two birds with one stone.” New companies have been popping up in Europe that design and host company team-building trips. Again, we’re not talking about a conference room or business lunch. Solomon predicts companies will be looking for “something kind of exotic” in their 2023 offsites. In 2021, Hoyos transformed a sparsely populated Italian village into a campus for company trips. The Workation Village hosts multi-day offsites for big names like Google and Spotify, for up to 200 people. Hoyos tells Euronews Travel to think of it as a sort of countryside boutique hotel meets modern co-working space meets yoga retreat meets adventure space. According to Hoyos, being in a stunning natural setting is conducive to creative and productive thinking. “Our brains are super hardwired to come back again to certain patterns of thought,” he explains. “When we are in our typical environments – cities, airports, meeting rooms, office spaces, restaurants, hotels – [they] tend to trigger these patterns that we are hardwired to.” Breaking routine and being in a natural setting breaks that cycle. What’s the point of company away days? Though individual companies may plan away days with specific goals, there’s one theme that seems everpresent: building trust. This is especially important now in a remote working environment. Most of the Workation Village’s clients are technology companies that are otherwise working remotely. – “The goal of those teams is to get to know one another because they normally don’t work together in the same space,” Hoyos says. “That’s one of the key issues. How do you build trust?”  Hoyos describes that being in such close proximity in a new environment can create bonds between employees in a way that may not be possible virtually. “Say for the first time in your life, you’re participating in yoga and you do these awkward movements and you feel a bit embarrassed,” he theorises. “But then you feel like it’s ok, and this creates trust.” Now, in the age of social media, cool offsites have also been an opportunity for company branding. “We have local photographers and videographers, and we help [employees] to use content around their experiences here to tell the story about their company, their team, company culture, and so on,” Hoyos says. As businesses continue to adapt to hybrid systems – and employees become more selective about the companies they work for – offsite opportunities could be a powerful tool in the modern workplace.

Downtown Lynchburg YMCA Reaches $7.5 Million Of $11.5 Million Fundraising Goal For Renovations – WDBJ https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/downtown-lynchburg-ymca-reaches-7-5-million-of-11-5-million-fundraising-goal-for-renovations-wdbj/ LYNCHBURG, Va. (WDBJ) – Three new stories and 23,000 square feet in space is what the YMCA of Central Virginia leaders envision for the downtown Lynchburg location. This week, they’ve wrapped up their year long leadership phase and have now raised $7.5 million towards the project, with an ultimate goal of $11.5 million. “What we hope to achieve, is community projects here. So our entire first floor, we’re going to bring this building down to ground level and our entry level will be all for the community. We’re going to have a teaching kitchen, which is going to be able to help our healthy living programs and our community health programs,” said Mary Taylor, association director of development for the YMCA of Central Virginia. There will also be a kids play zone and a new teen center. “For those that are 13 and above, they really don’t have anywhere to go in the downtown area.” Overall, the main focus of the renovation is about collaboration with other community organizations. “We will kind of be the hub here in the Lynchburg downtown area to be able to reach out to the others.” The current building was constructed in 1956 and YMCA leaders are looking forward to having more space for their programs and community outreach. ”We have so many other nonprofits in this area and they need space and we’re going to help them out, we’re going to partner with them.” The Capital Campaign now heads into the community phase, where the YMCA will be working to raise the final $4 million. Leaders hope they’ll be able to begin construction next year. For more information about the project, you can find the press release here. Copyright 2022 WDBJ. All rights reserved.

Pens’ Core Of Crosby, Letang, Malkin Still Together – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pens-core-of-crosby-letang-malkin-still-together-warren-tribune-chronicle/ Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin (71) skates to the bench after scoring against the Boston Bruins as Sidney Crosby (87) and Kris Letang (58) follow during the second period of an NHL hockey game, Monday, March 15, 2021, in Pittsburgh. (AP Photo/Keith Srakocic) PITTSBURGH — The scene was mundane only in its familiarity. Sidney Crosby working just off to the side of the net. Kris Letang circling the point. Evgeni Malkin coiled in the right circle. The whistle from a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins coaching staff the only thing breaking the silence. Ignore the rest of the players on the ice — some of whom were in elementary school the first time the core that’s defined one of the NHL’s marquee franchises for the better part of two decades took the ice together — and it could have been 2009. Or 2013. Or 2017. Or really, pretty much at any other point since Oct. 16, 2006, when Malkin, Crosby and Letang lost to Martin Brodeur and the New Jersey Devils 2-1 in an arena that long ago became a parking lot. They were kids then. Letang and Crosby, just 19. Malkin, all of 20. They didn’t know what they were getting into. The bond they created has withstood various coaches, general managers, health scares as well as the fiscal realities of the salary cap era. When the Penguins open the season on Thursday night against Arizona, Crosby, Letang and Malkin will begin their 17th year together, tying the run of New York Yankees stars Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera as the longest-tenured trio of teammates in major North American professional sports history. It’s rarified air, a milestone — for a few anxious days over the summer anyway — it appeared they wouldn’t reach with Letang and Malkin potentially poised to hit free agency. Malkin agreed to a four-year deal just hours before hitting the market, a signing created in part by Letang’s decision spread out his $36 million contract over six years instead of four, freeing up enough cap space to make sure Malkin stuck around. “It’s something special,” Letang said. “It’s something we’re going to have together our entire life and (now) we have a chance to make it even stronger and try to win.” Something that hasn’t been an issue for the Penguins since Crosby’s No. 87, Malkin’s No. 71 and Letang’s No. 58 became fixtures in the lineup. Pittsburgh hasn’t missed the playoffs since 2006, the season before Malkin and Letang arrived to help Crosby resurrect the fortunes of a team coming off a volatile period that included bankruptcy and the threat of relocation. Three times Crosby, Letang and Malkin have paraded through the downtown streets of their adopted hometown with the Stanley Cup. Yet it’s been five years since that giddy night in Nashville when the Penguins became the first team in a generation to claim back-to-back titles. It’s a fact not lost on any of them, one of the main reasons they don’t view the decision to stick together as a money grab. This isn’t about nostalgia. Their legacy was secure long before Malkin and Letang signed their new deals that could keep the core intact through at least 2025, when Crosby’s current contract ends. This is about making another deep postseason run next spring. And the spring after that. And the spring after that. “The main goal of having us all together is because we know we can win,” Letang said. “We have the recipe and that’s what we want to want to do again. And that’s all that matters. It’s not breaking records. It’s about winning.” It’s in the how where things get tricky. Malkin is 36 and coming off a wildly uneven season as he recovered from major knee surgery. Crosby and Letang are both 35 and while they remain in remarkable condition — Letang’s ice time last season was 25:47, the third-highest of his career — their bodies don’t bounce back quite like they used to. And they know it. Crosby smiled while pointing out that 10 years ago, he typically would have stayed on the ice for an extended period after practice rather than try to conserve his energy before the six-month slog that is the regular season begins. Don’t mistake Crosby’s more pragmatic approach to how he uses his time with a concession to Father Time or the idea he’s somehow lost a step or two. His next season averaging less than a point per game will be his first. “You’ve still got to continue to improve and work on your game,” said Crosby, whose 1,108 regular season games are a franchise record. “And you can’t cut corners there either. So it’s just a matter of balancing that.” Letang tries to rein himself in on his days off, but says he once hops over the boards it’s like “a switch.” “You’re playing the game,” he said. “You’re going as fast as you can. You don’t want to start managing yourself. That’s where you get hurt or that’s where, you know, your play starts to go down.” Coach Mike Sullivan made it a point recently to say that his team — with an average age of 30.3 — is “older but not old.” There are a sprinkling of kids on the roster. Defenseman Pierre Olivier Joseph and forward Ryan Poehling were both born in 1999 and have no recollection of the Penguins without Crosby, Letang or Malkin. Joseph remembers living in Montreal in the early 2000s and listening to his father, Frantzi, talk about a young Canadian phenom who was hockey’s next big thing. Fast forward nearly two decades and the phenom and his buddies are still going, setting an example Joseph is trying to absorb as best he can. “To see the chemistry that they have and just see the experience that (Crosby) has and they have,” Joesph said, “is really fun to see.” Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

10 Marvel Comics Wakanda Forever Should Pull From – CBR – Comic Book Resources https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/10-marvel-comics-wakanda-forever-should-pull-from-cbr-comic-book-resources/ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the most anticipated upcoming superhero film of the year. Since the sudden passing of actor Chadwick Boseman, who nailed the role as King T’Challa, fans have been curious if the second Black Panther film would be just as entertaining as the first one. With T’Challa being the most prominent character to carry the Black Panther mantle, many Marvel Comicsand MCU fans may wonder how the story can go on without him. Thankfully, Marvel houses some amazing ongoing series and miniseries that the Wakanda Forever filmmakers can pull from to keep the Black Panther legacy alive while giving T’Challa a proper sendoff and introducing Namor and Atlantis to the MCU. 10/10 Shuri’s First Run As Black Panther Black Panther Vol. 4 By Reginald Hudlin, Ken Lashley & J. Scott Campbell Shuri was nominated by the queen, Storm, to take on the Black Panther mantle while T’Challa was in a coma recovering from Doctor Doom’s attack. The panther goddess Bast tells Shuri that she was not worthy of the powers. Regardless of Bast’s rejection, Shuri dons the Black Panther mantle anyway to protect Wakanda from Morlun. While fans are not sure how T’Challa’s death will be handled in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, there are great expectations for Shuri to take on the Black Panther mantle. Doom may not make an appearance in the MCU just yet, but his attack on T’Challa can inspire the character’s death in the film. 9/10 Fantastic Four Shows Namor’s Hatred Of The Surface World Fantastic Four #147-149 By Gerry Conway, Rich Buckler, Joe Sinnott & Linda Lessmann The Fantastic Four has yet to make their MCU debut as a team but their connection to Namor could provide a great backstory for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After finding a nuclear device polluting the oceans, Namor decided that the surface world was the enemy because pollution was slowly destroying his home world. In retaliation, Namor used the sea monster Giganto to attack surface dwellers, but the Fantastic Four was able to defeat him. If pollution is used to express Namor’s hatred for the surface world in Wakanda Forever, it would be a conflict that realistically motivates Namor’s rage. Also, it would be cool to see Namor attack Wakanda while on the back of a beastly sea monster. 8/10 Namor’s Attack On Wakanda Avengers Vs. X-Men By Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, Matt Fraction, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker & more. Avengers vs. X-Men was one of the most exciting crossover events for Marvel Comics. In the series, Namor was one of the five members of the X-men who were possessed by the Phoenix Force. Under the influence of the Phoenix, Namor made his way to Wakanda and created a massive tidal wave, destroying almost all the nation. Comic fans have been looking forward to Namor appearing in the MCU for a while now, and many are curious to see how he makes a splash in Wakanda Forever. With the Phoenix Force played out in the X-Men films, Namor’s attack on Wakanda will most likely take a different turn in the movie. 7/10 Shuri’s Retaliation Against Namor New Avengers Vol. 3 #7 By Jonathan Hickman, Mike Deodato, Frank Martin Jr. & Rain Beredo Following his relief from the Phoenix Force, Namor looks to T’Challa to make peace for their respective nations to move on. As fellow members of the Illuminati, T’Challa agreed to make peace with Namor but Queen Shuri refused to forgive him. In response to Namor’s attack, Shuri initiated a virtual attack on Atlantis, leading to the death of a large population of Atlanteans. With the death of T’Challa and the possibility of a destroyed Atlantis, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will most-likely display some friction between Namor and Shuri, and this particular comic can be a great way to keep the hostility alive onscreen. 6/10 Riri Williams’s First Appearance As Ironheart Invincible Iron Man Vol. 3 #7 By Brian Michael Bendis, Mike Deadato Jr. & Frank Martin Jr. Riri Williams will make her film debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With that in mind, it is going to be important for the film to point out how she became Ironheart. Riri created her own prototype of the Iron Man armor using stolen tech from M.I.T. Tony Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgamecan result in Riri Williams’s inspiration to create the armor. Whether Riri was blipped or survived Thanos’s tumultuous snap, she was inspired by Iron Man in someway and Wakanda Forever will have to pull from the comics to properly introduce Ironheart. 5/10 Riri Meeting Shuri and The Dora Milaje In Wakanda Ironheart #9 By Eve Ewing, Geoffo, Matt Milla & Luciano Vecchio Though fans were excited to learn that Riri Williams was going to make her MCU debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, there were some questions on how she even ended up in Africa. In the comics, Riri appeared in Wakanda and met Shuri. With the assistance of Okoye, they defeated shadow creatures. MCU fans are still unsure on how Riri ends up in Wakanda, but there is a theory out there that suggests that she’s there to study Wakandan tech. Whether Riri’s travel to Wakanda is inspired by the comics or there is a new reason in the film, fans are excited to see the two young geniuses fighting side-by-side. 4/10 Introducing The Midnight Angels As The Dora Milaje’s Strongest Warriors Doomwar By Jonathan Maberry, John Romita Jr., Scot George Eaton, Will Conrad, Dean White & Dennis Mallonee Within the latest trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, fans pointed out that the Dora Milaje’s Aneka appears to wear the Midnight Angels. During Marvel Comics’ Doomwar event, T’Challa prepared a subgroup of the strongest Dora Milaje members to fight against Doctor Doom and his robotic army using specialized weapons aside from the usual Wakandan tech. When fans saw actress Michaela Coel dressed in the Midnight Angels costume in her portrayal as the Dora Milaje’s Aneka, there were many posts about the appreciation of some of Dora Milaje’s greatest warriors from the comics. There may not be a war with Doom in the film, but the Dora Milaje are more than prepared to face-off with Atlanteans. 3/10 World Of Wakanda Could Explain Aneka’s Disappearance From The First Film Black Panther: World Of Wakanda By Roxane Gay, Alitha Martinez & Rachelle Rosenberg Aside from being assembled to fight Doom, there was another form of Midnight Angels in the comics. Initially, Aneka was the general of the Dora Milaje but was stripped of her position after killing an abusive chieftain from her village. With the help of her fellow Dora Milaje and lover Ayo, Aneka stole the Midnight Angels tech and formed a new version of the group to revolt against Wakanda. In the first Black Panther film, Aneka was not introduced as a member of the Dora Milaje but Ayo was. It would make sense if the film explains how Aneka left Wakanda for a similar reason as she did in the comics and return to her homeland to help fight against the Atlanteans. 2/10 Fear Itself Could Inspire A Revelation To Namor Fear Itself By Matt Fraction, Stuart Immonen, Wade Von Grawbadger & Laura Martin When word got out that Attuma would also be making his debut in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, fans were shocked to see the character working well alongside Namor. During the crossover event Fear Itself, Attuma was transformed into Nerkkod: Breaker of the Oceans by one of the seven hammers of the worthy and destroyed Namor’s kingdom. It wouldn’t be much of a surprise if it turns out that Namor’s concern for Atlantis turns out to be an inside job led by Attuma in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Attuma’s character arc may be changed for the movies, but that doesn’t stop fans from expecting to see him face the Sub-Mariner in an attempt to usurp the Atlantean crown. 1/10 Shuri Comics Display Her Self-Identity Shuri By Nnedi Okorafor, Leonardo Romero & Jordie Bellaire Within the entire Shuri series, Shuri achieved self-discovery after being overwhelmed with suddenly becoming Black Panther after T’Challa’s disappearance. Eventually, Shuri realized that she was able to take up the Black Panther mantle while being true to herself and used the advanced gadgets she created to upgrade the suit. Though Shuri may have taken on the Black Panther mantle for a short time before, her role in her self-titled comics is more compelling and dynamic. It would be awesome to see Shuri flying around with wings on her suit in the film, just as she does in her comic series. NEXT: 10 DC Comics Black Adam Should Pull From

Corydon Man Dead In Police Shooting At Walmart Had Been Recently Released On Probation – Yahoo News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/corydon-man-dead-in-police-shooting-at-walmart-had-been-recently-released-on-probation-yahoo-news/ Oct.
