Special Olympics is an inclusive movement and an athletic organization, but it’s also a conduit for healthy living, something everyone can benefit from. Special Olympics Athlete Kayla Cornell serves as a health messenger for the organization and was recently chosen to attend the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health to advocate.
The last time the President of the United States convened a conference on this topic was more than 50 years ago when Special Olympics was newly founded.
Cornell was one of 500 attendees at the conference in our nation’s capital, hand-picked by Special Olympics International to represent those individuals with intellectual disabilities.
Cornell, alongside Special Olympics Minnesota Health Messenger Kayte Barton, met in small groups with members of Congress, federal civil servants, representatives of the private sector, and leading civil society organizations.
Now a nine-sport Special Olympics Michigan athlete, Cornell was first introduced to Special Olympics on the ski slopes in seventh grade. She began sharing her own health message in 2019 when she became a certified international Health Messenger for Special Olympics.
Educating herself, Cornell has lost more than 40-pounds and learned the physical and emotional value behind a balanced diet. Currently, Cornell teaches a cooking class for Special Olympics Michigan; a seven-week class that can be done online or in person. She’s also enrolled in college to become a dietician.
“You can go to doctors’ offices or talk to health professionals and talk to them about how they can understand our disabilities more, and how they can work with us,” Cornell explained. “Some athletes lead exercises at practices, I have my cooking class, and there are multiple things you can do to get involved as a Health Messenger. That’s how I found my passion and what I love to do. I wouldn’t be where I am if I wasn’t selected (in the Healthy Messenger program).”
Cornell plans to continue conversations with Congress and Michigan lawmakers in an effort to educate the need for better health services.

Dolphins Week 6 Power Rankings Roundup Sports Illustrated
Dolphins Week 6 Power Rankings Roundup – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dolphins-week-6-power-rankings-roundup-sports-illustrated/
The Miami Dolphins continued to fall in the national NFL power rankings following their second consecutive loss, this one a 40-17 decision against the New York Jets.
The Dolphins, of course, were down to third quarterback Skylar Thompson against the Jets after Teddy Bridgewater was removed from the game after one offensive play because of the new concussion rules, this after he started in place of the injured Tua Tagovailoa.
In our survey of rankings of 10 national outlets —CBS Sports, NFL.com, The Athletic, The Sporting News, The Ringer, USA Today, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Yahoo, and Pro Football Talk — the Dolphins averaged a ranking of 11.8 among the 32 NFL teams, down from their average of 5.5 after Week 4.
The Dolphins were ranked as high as sixth and as low as 18th.
Here’s the breakdown of the Dolphins’ 10 power rankings spots, along with the commentary associated with it:
CBS Sports
Ranking: 10 Previous: 5
Analysis: With Tua Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater out, they had no shot against the Jets. But the defense has been an issue all season long. That’s a major concern.
NFL.com
Ranking: 18 Previous: 10
Analysis: The Dolphins have cooled off after their hot start, and injuries at the game’s most important position help to explain why. Tua Tagovailoa (concussion) sat out Sunday’s game against the Jets, and backup Teddy Bridgewater lasted one play before he, too, was sidelined after being evaluated for a head injury. Bridgewater passed the tests administered by doctors on Sunday, but was ruled out due to the new “ataxia” addendum to the league’s concussion protocols. Third-string QB Skylar Thompson performed admirably on short notice, but struggled to take advantage of Miami’s explosive playmakers. The result was an average Dolphins attack that all but disappeared in the fourth quarter, when the Jets reeled off 21 unanswered points to turn a tight contest into a laugher for the home team in green.
The Athletic
Ranking: 15 Previous: 5
Analysis: Maybe Teddy Bridgewater will be able to move quickly through the concussion protocol this week in order to start for the Dolphins on Sunday, but Miami is in danger of frittering away its 3-0 start if it has to go with Skylar Thompson against the Vikings. Enter Sudfeld, who spent the 2021 season with Mike McDaniel. Because the Lions have a bye this week, it’s no skin off their backs to not have a backup quarterback. Then the Dolphins can trade Sudfeld back to the Lions next week and he can be embroiled in a brand-new competitive-balance controversy.

Analysis: The NFL is unfair. No, the Dolphins were never the best team in the NFL, as some were saying after they started 3-0. But they were good. Then they lost a quarterback in each of the past two games and are 3-2. Both games were close in the fourth quarter and probably Miami wins if they had their quarterback who started the game. It’s hard to even get a true read on Miami until they get Tua Tagovailoa back.

Ranking: 9 Previous: 4
Analysis: We can’t punish a team down to its third-string quarterback too severely. The Dolphins are still dangerous, and they’re fifth in the NFL in EPA per dropback. This is still astounding, even if Tua Tagovailoa was under center for every down.
ESPN
Ranking: 12 Previous: 5
Analysis (on the biggest obstacle to making the playoffs): The health of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who remains in concussion protocol after being briefly hospitalized in Week 4, is paramount. There is no timetable for his return, at least not one that the Dolphins have shared publicly, and their first game without him was a bust. Teddy Bridgewater was ruled out after a single snap Sunday and was also placed in concussion protocol. Rookie Skylar Thompson then had a rough debut in a 40-17 loss to the Jets. Miami’s schedule for the next two months is easy enough to get it back atop the AFC — with Tagovailoa under center. That confidence wanes with anyone else.
The Ringer
Ranking: 6 Previous: 7
Analysis: By the second offensive snap of Sunday’s game against the Jets, the Dolphins were down to their third-string QB, rookie Skylar Thompson, after Teddy Bridgewater was removed under the NFL’s new concussion protocol. (Starter Tua Tagovailoa remains sidelined because of the concussion he suffered in Week 4.) Thompson completed 19 of 33 passes for 166 yards and threw an interception in his NFL debut. Running back Raheem Mostert and the Dolphins’ rushing attack helped keep the game close into the fourth quarter, but after Tyreek Hill exited with a foot injury, the offense unsurprisingly ran out of gas in the final 15 minutes of the 40-17 loss.
The Sporting News
Ranking: 12 Previous: 5
Analysis: The Dolphins’ offense has gone from breakout with Tua Tagovailoa to hampered with rookie Skylar Thompson in a hurry. Their defense isn’t capable of holding up in that scenario and the Jets exposed that with a variety of plays featuring a similar creative attack.
USA Today
Ranking: 12 Previous: 4
Analysis: Yes, the quarterback depth chart is temporarily tattered. But that’s masked the disappearance of the defense – and, to a lesser extent, the special teams – over the past two weeks, when Miami has been torched for 67 points.
10 Coolest Pieces Of Alien Technology In Games TheGamer
10 Coolest Pieces Of Alien Technology In Games – TheGamer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/10-coolest-pieces-of-alien-technology-in-games-thegamer/
It’s completely plausible to assume that there is advanced and sentient alien life out in the ominously dark and seemingly endless ocean of outer space. It’s also not hard to imagine that their technology would probably blow ours completely out of the water.
Video games provide the perfect conceptual testing ground for what alien technology could conceivably be. It has the opportunity to offer gamers extremely powerful and devastatingly destructive technology to do with as they see fit. More than just an exciting thought experiment, these games can allow us to live out our power fantasies and imagine the tantalizingly exciting possibilities of the distant future. Here are some of gaming’s coolest gadgets, weapons, and tech.
XCOM 2’s mechanized Andromedons actually house an organic life form within their airtight battlesuits and are immune to all sorts of elemental damage. The suit has a devastating plasma cannon and can pummel straight through walls in an attempt to take you out. Once the invading alien pilot is killed, the fight isn’t over.
In a second attack phase, the suit itself will gain sentience and charge at you with deadly melee attacks, leaving a trail of a nasty poisonous substance in its wake. Also, if you opt not to kill the metallic beast and mind control it instead, it becomes a very powerful ally on the battlefield, causing quite a nuisance to their original alien comrades.
9/10 Predator: Hunting Grounds – Predator Suit
In Predator: Hunting Grounds, you have the chance to play as Predator in 1v4 multiplayer against a squad of puny human soldiers. As always, the Predator has a variety of death-dealing tricks up its sleeve that all originated from another world.
There’s a collection of primitive and advanced weapons and technology to help them with all that incessant murdering, including an advanced laser-guided plasma caster, the iconic net gun, and the relentlessly fun smart disc. All of that lethal tech couples perfectly with your active camo enabled. They’ll never know how much they had it coming.
8/10 Destroy All Humans – Anal Probe
The recurring Anal Probe gadget in the Destroy All Humans series finally answers the age-old question of why probing human nether regions is necessary for intergalactic research. As it turns out, all humans have a pure form of Furon DNA, which is exactly what Crypto and his alien species need to prevent their extinction.
Luckily, they have the perfect tool. The Anal Probe does exactly what it says on the tin – aim at a poor unsuspecting subject’s bottom, fire an intimidatingly green beam of energy into their rectum, and witness in horror as they defecate all over the floor and their head explodes. Whoever said being an alien was clean work?
7/10 Prey – Mimic Matter
Mimics in 2017’s Prey are a subspecies of hostile aliens that can camouflage themselves by transforming into any inanimate object. After doing a quick scan of a mimic with your trusty Psychoscope, you’ll have the same transmutable ability with Mimic Matter.
You can transform into everyday household objects such as a garbage can or an unsuspecting coffee mug, and later you get the chance to inhabit the shapes of much deadlier objects. Being able to shift into basically anything you see fit is a great way to solve puzzles and get to hard-to-reach areas. It opens up the gameplay quite a bit, and it’s a blast to mess with the enemy AI.
6/10 Star Wars – Lightsaber
Perhaps the most iconic weapon in all fantasy fiction, the Lightsaber is a powerful ancient blade made of pure plasma energy that has the ability to cut through almost anything. The weapon has been a staple of the Jedi and Sith orders for millennia and has been used by any alien race skilled and disciplined enough to wield it.
Pretty much every video game with the Star Wars name has included the Lightsaber in some shape or form. Some of the more notable include Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi: Fallen Order, and Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. In all of these games, you can construct your own lightsaber, choose its color, and wield the ancient weapon in a variety of forms and styles.
5/10 Half-Life 2 – Gravity Gun
Half-Life 2’s Gravity Gun uses crystals from the alien planet of Xen for its power and has two distinctive fire modes that are useful for both combat and puzzle-solving. The first fires a potent energy blast that applies an astounding amount of force to whatever it is directed at – which is great for swatting away enemies and blasting aside seemingly immovable objects.
The secondary fire mode allows you to levitate items off of the ground and move them to where you see fit. When combining both, the gadget has the potential to be a very devastating weapon that will hit harder depending on the type of material you lob at your foes.
4/10 Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy – Element Guns
After receiving them on his 13th birthday, Peter Quill finds out that his Element Guns were once owned by his father, a native of the planet Spartax. As the name suggests, the guns allow you to conjure four elements at will.
At first, the gun’s abilities are limited, but as Peter bonds with the rest of the team, he gains access to ice, lightning, wind, and plasma shots that each affect combat, puzzle-solving, and traversal. The fact that you have to deepen your relationships with each of the Guardians of the Galaxy before having access to these upgrades is a nice touch, and gives them an air of appreciated gravitas.
3/10 Mass Effect – Mass Relays
‘Mass Effect’ actually refers to the manipulation of matter from the mysterious Element Zero, which can manipulate the mass of anything in the field it creates. That’s where Mass Relays come into play.
Built eons ago, they are ancient structures that act as gargantuan transit devices that are scattered across the Milky Way. These impressive pieces of tech allow for intergalactic space travel with your hub spaceship, which makes the galaxy a much smaller place. It’s because of Mass Relays that races from all over the galaxy have discovered and shared with each other their respective cultures, technological advances, and general distaste for the new kids on the block – the humans.
2/10 Halo – Halo Arrays
There’s a reason why the title of an entire franchise is named directly after these beautifully colossal celestial space rings. They’re kind of a big deal. Originally created by the Forerunners, an ancient advanced civilization, Halo Arrays were built to serve a very important purpose. Kill everything.
After discovering the Flood – an entire species of parasitic organisms desperate to take over any organic lifeform – the only logical to do is to hit the intergalactic reboot button. There are multiple Halo rings dotted around the galaxy that will destroy all sentient life in a devastating chain reaction when activated, in order to stop the ever-pervasive spread of the Flood. More than just a pretty face, eh?
1/10 Destiny – The Traveler
Bungie sure likes a grand galaxy-spanning tale. The Traveler in Destiny’s expansive sci-fi series is a giant mechanical spherical entity of ancient origin that has the ability to boost the development of civilizations and literally resurrect people from the dead.
After hanging about for a few billion years, this very large, round machine decided that humans were its next target. It proceeded to pop in and out of our solar system, terraforming previously inhospitable planets to make us feel more at home. It does this with Light, a paracausal force that is the very source of life itself. Before becoming dormant in the sky of the last remaining city after the collapse, it birthed the Ghosts – sapient machines who could find fallen heroes capable of wielding this inexplicable power. If terraforming entire planets and advancing the technology of multiple galactic civilizations isn’t cool, we don’t know what is.

Crypto Exchange Bittrex To Pay $30M To Settle OFAC Charges It Allowed Sanctioned Jurisdictions To Trade – CoinDesk https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-exchange-bittrex-to-pay-30m-to-settle-ofac-charges-it-allowed-sanctioned-jurisdictions-to-trade-coindesk/
Nikhilesh De is CoinDesk’s managing editor for global policy and regulation. He owns marginal amounts of bitcoin and ether.
Crypto exchange Bittrex settled charges alleging it inadvertently violated federal sanctions with the U.S. Treasury Department, agreeing to pay just under $30 million in fines and keep a closer eye on its compliance program.
The U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the federal government’s sanctions enforcer, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), Treasury’s money laundering watchdog, announced the settlements on Tuesday. Alongside the monetary penalties, Bittrex has already taken remedial action to correct these issues, OFAC said.
Between 2014 and late 2017, Bittrex allowed around 1,800 people in sanctioned jurisdictions – including Iran, Cuba, Sudan, Syria and Crimea – to conduct more than 116,000 transactions worth roughly $260 million through its platform, according to the settlement. The Seattle, Washington-based exchange has since taken action to better comply with sanctions blacklists.
OFAC has a number of comprehensive sanctions actions, prohibiting U.S. persons – defined as anyone on U.S. soil and U.S. citizens located abroad – from interacting with or providing services to people in these jurisdictions.
Bittrex acknowledged years ago that it had allowed users from some sanctioned jurisdictions, such as Iran, to sign up for its platform. The exchange reached out to some of these customers in 2019 to offer to return their funds.
In a company statement, Bittrex said that it maintained anti-money laundering and sanctions compliance processes, and tapped unnamed third parties and service providers to assist it with verifying accounts and screen for sanctions compliance.
“As a growing company, during the period in question, we routinely assessed and improved these functions,” the statement said.
OFAC said there were a number of mitigating factors, including the fact that Bittrex was “a small and new company” at the time and the company “provided substantial cooperation” with OFAC’s investigation.
“In response to the Apparent Violations, Bittrex swiftly took a series of subsequent remedial measures that significantly curtailed the Apparent Violations,” OFAC said, including blocking the IP addresses tied to sanctioned jurisdictions, restricting sanctioned jurisdiction account holders and using new tools to improve compliance.
The maximum possible penalty for the OFAC allegations could have exceeded $35 billion, OFAC said, but given the various factors, the final fine is just over $24 million.
While OFAC focused on the alleged sanctions violations, the FinCEN settlement focused instead on suspicious activity reports (SAR) that the regulator alleges Bittrex failed to file during that same time period.
Bittrex “failed to file” SARs tied to 200 transactions moving more than $140,000 worth of cryptocurrency, and 22 transactions touching over $1 million, FinCEN said.
“Bittrex failed to implement effective transaction monitoring on its trading platform, relying on as few as two employees with minimal anti-money laundering training and experience to manually review all of the transactions for suspicious activity, which at times were over 20,000 per day,” FinCEN said.
FinCEN fined Bittrex $29.8 million, but said it would credit the exchange’s $24 million OFAC fine, meaning the company will only pay an overall total of just under $30 million.
In its statement, sent through a company attorney, Bittrex said it was “pleased” to have settled the charges.
“The settlement provides full resolution of both OFAC’s inquiry into transactions in sanctioned jurisdictions that occurred predominantly through 2017, and FinCEN’s assertion that Bittrex did not fully implement all of its Anti-Money Laundering Program controls through 2018,” the statement said. “… Importantly, both FinCEN and OFAC acknowledge that Bittrex’s longstanding responsive remedial efforts have significantly curtailed the risk of continued violations.”

Study Finds Climate Change Is Bringing More Intense Rains To U.S. The Washington Post
Study Finds Climate Change Is Bringing More Intense Rains To U.S. – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/study-finds-climate-change-is-bringing-more-intense-rains-to-u-s-the-washington-post/
When it rains, it pours.
A new paper published Tuesday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters finds that it’s raining harder in most of the United States. The study, authored by researchers at Northwestern University, tied the results to climate change — and warmer air’s ability to hold more water.
The findings echo the fundamental laws of physics and thermodynamics, as well as decades of research, and highlight the real-time role that humans are having on the weather and climate.
The research offers confirmation of what atmospheric scientists have been warning of for years: a warmer world is, on balance, a wetter world. And as global temperatures continue to warm, an uptick in precipitation extremes is expected.
Climate change is causing heavier rain events
What the study finds is consistent with a basic tenet of atmospheric physics: For every degree Fahrenheit, air temperatures warm, and the atmosphere can hold 4 percent more water; this is known as the Clausius-Clapeyron relationship. Where storm clouds develop and the atmosphere is sufficiently moist, it means a warmer climate will support more intense rainfall.
The study reports “consistent shifts from lower to higher daily precipitation intensities, particularly in the central and eastern United States.” The authors compared rainfall over two periods — 1951 to 1980 and 1991 to 2020 — to see how patterns evolved over time.
“When it’s raining, it’s raining more,” said Ryan Harp, the author lead author on the study, in an interview. “But what we also did was … we were able to verify some of the expectations we had based on modeling studies.”
In other words, most similar studies to date had centered around projections made by forward-running computer models fed with historic data. This is among the first that, on a nationwide level, examines observed daily rainfall trends.
“I think during that process we were a little surprised that this paper hasn’t been written before,” said Daniel Horton, study co-author and a professor at Northwestern University, in an interview. “We know that precipitation should be increasing … but we just wanted to do a very straightforward paper that says ‘yep, we’re seeing it.’”
Harp said the fact that reality matched simulations lends credence to climate models.
“People should in general be trusting in climate models,” he said. “We’re constantly working to improve them to the best of our abilities.”
Not necessarily more rain overall, and not everywhere
In the study, the authors examined daily data from more than 1,700 weather stations scattered about the Lower 48. Each one had to have a continuous record dating back to at least 1951 to be included in the study.
In the eastern United States, the pair observed a 4.5 to 5.7 percent uptick in average daily rainfall on days when it rained. That does not say there are more days with rain, or more rain overall.
“That doesn’t necessarily give us the whole story,” said Harp. “There may be places where precipitation intensity is increasing, but frequency is decreasing, we might not know if there’s an overall increase or decrease. That’s one thing that we’re working on.”
Greg Carbin, head of the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center who was not involved in this research, appreciated that the study touched on the “paradox of potentially fewer precipitation days with higher-intensity precipitation occurring on those days.”
Carbon has noted a tendency for more rain falling on fewer days in his own analysis of recent precipitation.
“Overall, the area covered by the count of 1-inch rainfall days was lower than in recent years across large parts of the central and eastern U.S.,” Carbin wrote in an email. “In fact, moderate to severe drought has plagued areas of the Northeast, and extreme to exceptional drought is now expanding across part of the central U.S. Nonetheless, we have had extreme rainfall events occur in St. Louis, Dallas, eastern Kentucky, and most recently with Hurricane Ian in Florida.”
Despite strong trends in the central and eastern United States, the authors noted that there were a few places where rainfall did not appear to be growing more intense. The paper does detail “mixed signals in the western U.S.,” however, for reasons the authors are still trying to sift out.
“That [trend] didn’t hold true for the western U.S.,” said Harp, especially in the Pacific Northwest. He explained that changes in the overall placement of weather systems are “suppressing” any tendency for heavier precipitation in the West. A slight change in the location at which high and low pressure systems are anchored can have enormous bearings on steering currents, and subsequently how much precipitation falls in a given location.
Changing precipitation trends poses societal challenges
With the planet continuing to warm, a continued increase in rainfall intensity can be expected. That spells concern over whether existing infrastructure can handle the downpours of the future.
Communities may need to turn to simulated precipitation events of the future to guide building decisions, Horton said.
The past summer was a testament to how climate-supercharged downpours can wreak havoc on major metropolitan areas. During a five-week span in July and August, five 1,000-year rain events — or extremely heavy rainfall episodes that have a 0.1 percent chance of happening in any given year — occurred across the nation.
“Recent years have seen some remarkable high-end precipitation events,” Carbin said.

A new guide from the Department of Homeland Security’s Science and Technology Directorate is full of information for potential partners to take part in collaborative research and develop long term partnership opportunities. To learn more, Federal News Network’s Eric White spoke with Megan Mahle on the Federal Drive with Tom Temin . Mahle is director of industry partnerships in DHS’ office of innovation and collaboration.
Megan Mahle: At the Department of Homeland Security Science and Technology Directorate, the industry partnerships are essential to how we do business. So we know that research and development doesn’t just happen in a vacuum. And it happens via collaborations with all sorts of partners. We have partnerships with academia, national laboratories, other international government partners, as well as the private sector. And so our hope in developing the partnership guide was to really put all the information in one spot and make it easy for people to learn how to work with us. So we have information in there about partnership opportunities, the kind of vehicles we use, the types of partners we’re looking for. And then the real meat in the back is a list of our research development test and evaluation priority areas.
Eric White: All right, so you put it out in front there for me. The meat of it, what are the evaluation areas that you are looking to focus on?
Megan Mahle: Sure. So the guide includes a list of five priority areas, with a number of different programs and projects underneath them. But at the very high level, the five areas are border security, chemical, biological and explosive defense, counterterrorism, cybersecurity, and information analysis. And then capabilities for first responders.
Eric White: What are the methods that you all use for engaging the industry side of things? Do they mostly come to you? Or do you really go out there digging and trying to get them to work with you?
Megan Mahle: I think it’s a little of both. And a big priority for us is to ensure that people aren’t having to go to sam.gov and search for some, you know, 75-page solicitation and figure out what we’re talking about. We’re really trying to break it down, and make it easier to digest the types of work that we are looking to do, and hope that it helps people want to understand what we’re trying to accomplish and see how it might connect with what they already have ongoing on the commercial side, potentially, and how that might map to DHS missions.
Eric White: And once you make that connection, what is the next step? Do you ever feel as if they’re kind of wary if its their first time working with you all? Or do you find that they are very accepting and trying to help towards what your mission is.
Megan Mahle: So I think the nice thing about DHS S&T Is that we have such a variety of ways to partner with us. It is not just, you know, a standard contract, we have a lot of programs that are focused specifically on small businesses, on startups, on citizens, you know, we have prize challenges that we put out that individual innovators could respond and win cash prizes for. So it really is a very wide variety of people that we’re looking for. And through this guide, we’re really hoping to engage with new people. We don’t want the same people all the time, we want people to be aware of what we’re doing and get excited and interested in our mission space, and really grow our network so that we have the private sector working together with us to address homeland security mission needs.
Eric White: Yeah, it seems as if a lot of the S&T folks, whether it’s at DHS, or on the space side, really, agencies that depend on innovative technologies are looking to expand the dome in the realm of people that they work with. What is the layout right now? Are you all working with a lot of different small businesses? Or is it a little bit more like the defense side where it’s three or four major players in the game?
Megan Mahle: I’d say we have a lot of small businesses, we have a lot of variety. I’m just always interested in getting more variety, you know, changing the face of who we’re working with just being as inclusive as possible. And I think, you know, for DHS, we have a lot of, you know, dual use possibilities. We have a lot of possibilities for people that could promote their technologies on the commercial market, in addition to selling back to the department. So I think we really have a lot of opportunity for innovators of all kinds. We know that innovation is happening in large businesses, and we know that it’s happening in the startup community. So we really have focused on developing a number of programs that sort of target all those types of audiences.
Eric White: Are there any major technologies that DHS uses today, whether it comes to border control or cybersecurity anything like that, that have been formulated strictly from a partnership that your office maybe even it was responsible for creating in the first place?
Megan Mahle: So we have an interesting program, the Silicon Valley innovation program. So that really is focused on the startup community. And it’s not just on Silicon Valley, we have startups that have been awarded from all over the U.S, and internationally. And we have some great examples of technologies that are in use by Customs and Border Protection, for example, that have grown out of the startup community, taking what they have already developed on the commercial side, and getting an understanding and relationships with our end users, and seeing how that fits into homeland security missions. So it’s really giving people access to understand how their technologies could be used by us and doing some tweaking and some small developments to really make it work within the department.
Eric White: Yeah, that tweaking that was kind of the nice segue way into what my next question is, which is, when you have a specific need that may not be commercially viable, what is your role in reaching out to companies who you think might be well-suited to fill that need? But not necessarily for any profit sake or anything? But just specifically for what you all want to use it for?
Megan Mahle: I think it varies. I mean, we have all sorts of entry points, whether it’s the the most basic of research to very advanced applied commercialization. So it really runs the gamut depending on the individual need. But I think the the opportunities that we have, as part of our tech transfer and commercialization mission as well, really allow us to sort of partner in ways outside of contracts through agreements, like our cooperative research and development agreement, CRDAs, to really help with those type of technologies. And that type of testing really to get us hands on with a technology, like you said, that might only have a small market, a limited use case for DHS, specifically,
Eric White: As somebody who covers the different industries that work with the government, the homeland security, you know, I don’t even know what to call the industry sometimes has seen a significant amount of growth. Is your Rolodex gotten bigger over the years? And what have you seen from the industry side that you’re seeing more players come coming to you all, or what what does it look like?
Megan Mahle: Yeah, I think I’d agree, I think there’s more interest in working with us. And I think, you know, it’s also a concerted effort on our side of explaining the missions. I mean, I think people are familiar with some of the DHS missions. But there’s so many that, you know, maybe they aren’t aware of that really are ripe for commercial solutions, and partnerships. And so I think by putting out the document, like the partnership guide, we really are trying to focus on those that full idea of what the missions and the possibilities are.
Eric White: I was going to say it doesn’t hurt that DHS’ list of areas of responsibilities keeps growing.
Megan Mahle: Exactly, it can be so overwhelming. And I think that’s sort of the point. And the opportunity here is to really help break it down and make it less, you know, monolithic and a little bit more digestible for people.
Eric White: Well, we’ve probably got some folks listening that might be interested in finding the guide, what can you tell them about, you know, if somebody owns a small business, or has an idea that they want to bring you all what’s the best route in your mind to go?
Megan Mahle: So the guide is available on our DHS Science and Technology website for download. We also encourage people and if they read the guide, they’ll see throughout the document, we really encourage people to reach out to S&T’s industry liaison, and we have an email address in the guide. That really, we’re interested in hearing from people. We want people to jump on our mailing lists and hear about upcoming opportunities that we have, especially once they get an idea for where they might fit and what opportunities they’re eligible for. I think they can keep an eye out as as those come up, but, you know, encourage people to take a look at the guide, learn about our business processes, and then reach out to our industry liaison. And we’d love to have follow up conversation about technologies that are being developed and then explain or can make connections to our program offices.
Tom Temin: Megan Mahle is the director of industry partnerships in the Homeland Security’s office of innovation and collaboration, part of the science and technology directorate.

Local Tourism To Benefit From Caribbean Travel Marketplace Barbados Today
Local Tourism To Benefit From Caribbean Travel Marketplace – Barbados Today https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/local-tourism-to-benefit-from-caribbean-travel-marketplace-barbados-today/
Discussions between the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), airlines and other tourism interests at the recent Caribbean Travel Marketplace (CTM) are likely to result in benefits for the industry here in the upcoming winter season and beyond, a senior BHTA official has disclosed.
Although keeping the details close to his chest, the association’s chief executive officer Geoffrey Roach told Barbados TODAY that this year’s Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA)-organised CTM was productive, and the aim now is to follow through on the preliminary talks held during the 40th edition of the Caribbean’s largest and longest-running marketing event.
“I wouldn’t want to go into detail because some of [the people we had talks with] have asked us not to share too much at this point, but I would say that for the industry there are promising discussions with airlines, with persons who are looking for accommodation, persons who want to bring groups to the island,” he told Barbados TODAY in Puerto Rico last week as the first face-to-face CTM since the onset of COVID-19 was winding down.
“The discussions have yielded some promising potential for the country and really, at the end of the day, what comes of it will be based on what we do after . . . .
“We have to . . . sit and strategise around some of the discussions that we’ve had.
Meetings are one thing but it’s about the plans that we make coming out of the discussions that we had,” Roach added.
The BHTA’s participation in this year’s CTM – which allowed tourism suppliers to meet face-to-face with wholesalers from around the world selling Caribbean vacation travel – marked the resumption of the association’s in-person marketing thrust to the international market.
(Left to right) BHTA chairman Renée Coppin speaking with BHTA CEO Geoffrey Roach, BTMI Director, USA, Eusi Skeete, and Loreto Duffy-Mayers (backing) at the recent CHTA Caribbean Travel Marketplace in Puerto Rico.
Chairman Renée Coppin noted that although participation at the two-day event may not have been as high as before COVID-19, it was still tremendously successful with over 800 delegates represented.
“We had a very busy schedule with a number of productive meetings looking at how we can build business for Barbados for the upcoming winter season as well as 2023 into 2024,” Coppin said.
“Another major focus for us was working on maintaining the strong relationships for which Barbados has always been known with our trade partners, as this has been extremely important to our success as a destination over the years.”
More than 20 BHTA member companies along with representatives from the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) and Intimate Hotels of Barbados (IHB) attended the event which attracted tourism suppliers, traditional and new buyers and travel advisors from around the world. (DP)

French PM To Requisition Workers Amid Refineries Strike 69News WFMZ-TV
French PM To Requisition Workers Amid Refineries Strike – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/french-pm-to-requisition-workers-amid-refineries-strike-69news-wfmz-tv/
PARIS (AP) — French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne announced a decision to requisition workers operating petrol depots of ExxonMobil’s French branch Esso and threatened to do the same for those of Total group, amid strikes that have led fuel pumps to run dry in the country.
The drastic measure came as drivers waiting in long lines to fill up their cars and petrol stations closed while awaiting deliveries have become an increasingly familiar sight in France in recent days.
Requisitions allow authorities to order some of the workers of the petrol depots hit by strikes to return to work. It was not immediately clear how the order would be applied. A similar measure was imposed in 2010 during strikes in French refineries.
Speaking Tuesday at the National Assembly, Borne said about 30% of France’s petrol stations are experiencing temporary shortages with at least one or more type of fuel. She noted that strong differences between regions, Paris area and northern France being the most affected places — making life difficult for drivers.
She called for urgent dialogue between unions and management as strikers seek pay rises amid soaring inflation in the country.
“A salary disagreement do not justify blocking the country,” she said.
Borne’s announcement comes one day after a deal was reached between two unions and Esso’s leadership over a pay rise. Yet some other hard-left unions have rejected it and decided to continue the strike.
“I asked prefects to launch the procedure to requisition workers who are indispensable to the functioning” of the Esso petrol depots, Borne said.
She added that she is ready to make a similar decision regarding Total facilities if salary negotiations do not start quickly.
Panic buying by some people worried that stations might run out of fuel altogether is exacerbating problems facing motorists, though authorities are urging consumers not to worry. Government officials said they increased petrol imports and released some of the state’s strategic stocks to help ease the shortages.

White House Holds Historic Conference On Hunger Nutrition And Health Mirage News
White House Holds Historic Conference On Hunger, Nutrition, And Health – Mirage News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/white-house-holds-historic-conference-on-hunger-nutrition-and-health-mirage-news/
At the first White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health in over 50 years, President Joe Biden presented a new national strategy for combating hunger, improving healthy eating, and reducing diet-related disease by 2030 in the U.S.
The president said public and private partners in health care must work to: improve Americans’ access to healthy food; better integrate nutrition with health care; make nutritional information as transparent as possible; and invest more in nutrition and food security research.
And that would only be the start.
“There’s so much more in our strategy,” Biden said during opening remarks at the conference, held on September 28. “There’s so much more in our imagination, but one thing is clear. Meeting our bold goals requires a whole-of-government approach and a whole-of-society effort.”
The new national strategy included many recommendations put forth in August by the Task Force on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, an independent, nonpartisan group of subject matter experts and multi-sector leaders. Task force co-chair Dariush Mozaffarian, currently the dean for policy and Jean Mayer Professor of Nutrition at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, said at the release of their report that “the actions and strategies we have outlined are sensible and actionable, and would create transformational change for Americans.”
Along with other national stakeholders, Tufts played an important role in helping to bring about the conference, which comes 53 years after the first White House Conference on Food, Nutrition, and Health was chaired and organized by former Tufts president Jean Mayer. Mayer founded the university’s school of nutrition, and the Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts bears the name of the former university president.
The White House Conference represents the culmination of a significant amount of planning and coordination by the White House, the various federal agencies, and Congress. The D.C. event, which launched the new national strategy, brought together leaders from state and local governments, nonprofits, private businesses, farmers, faith-based leaders, and youth advocates, as well as researchers and healthcare providers to “unite around a vision” proposed in the national strategy, in the words of Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack. “Changes are crucial,” he said. “However, the federal government cannot do them alone.”
To achieve its goals of ending hunger, improving nutrition and physical activity, and reducing diet-related diseases by 2030, the Biden administration seeks to make the Child Tax Credit permanent, provide free meals for all students during and outside of the school year, expand access and healthy eating in the federal nutrition programs, create healthcare programs that support food as medicine interventions, advance nutrition science, create new package labeling and targets for reducing sodium and added sugar, and more.
Speakers and attendees at the Conference focused on the twin problems of hunger and poor nutrition, which are often flip sides of the same coin for individuals and families.
“We have the biggest military, but we lead industrial nations in diet-related diseases,” said Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, who supported the Conference along with Congressman Jim McGovern of Massachusetts, Senator Mike Braun of Indiana, and the late Representative Jackie Walorski of Indiana. “Half of our population right now is diabetic or pre-diabetic. Black Americans are 77 percent more likely to get diabetes and twice as likely to die from it,” said Booker.
“There’s no one in this room that does not know someone going through a chronic disease,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams, who spoke at the Conference. He recounted to audience members that after two months of following a plant-based diet, his diabetic mother was able to go off insulin – this, after seven years of regular injections. “Chronic disease hijacks your life.”
At a session titled “Making Healthy Choices,” Susan Mayne, director of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), explained the range of impacts of proper food labeling: “When we put things on the label… it empowers consumers with information…and leads to many industries wanting to reformulate their products to make them healthier.” When the FDA required trans fats to be listed on nutrition labels, for example, population trans fat intake dropped 80 percent, Mayne said.
Chair of the House Appropriations Committee Rosa DeLauro gave a rousing speech during afternoon plenaries. “We can do this,” she said. “And I’m going to say this to the administration: Strategies are laid out. Put it in the 2024 budget, so that we can deal with it, and move on it in the Congress. Let us then take it from there.”
“We live in a country where hunger absolutely does not need to be a problem,” said 17-year-old high school senior and healthy-living advocate Avani Rai, in a conversation with Domestic Policy Advisor Susan E. Rice. “We have the capabilities to make a difference to end hunger. It’s a choice that we have to make, but a choice that we have to make all together.”
It remains to be seen what specific policies will be implemented by the administration and Congress in the coming months. Mozaffarian is leading an ongoing advocacy initiative at the Friedman School, supported by philanthropic gifts, to ensure that the most promising actions in the national strategy happen. “The national strategy sets out a strong, detailed, whole-of-government approach to fixing food,” says Mozaffarian. “It’s up to all of us to ensure these are not just words on a page but become real actions.”
For Rocco Perla, a healthcare expert and co-founder of The Health Initiative, a campaign to increase investments in health, prioritizing nutrition is key. “What do people actually need to be healthy? It’s not complicated,” he said. “If we’re really committed to population health and reducing medical costs, we need to put the health care system to work for health.”
Senator Bill Frist, former Senate Majority Leader and one of the co-chairs of the Task Force on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health, said in a statement that the conference is a “great [step] forward in reducing hunger, rooted in listening to those with lived experiences and bipartisan action.”
Mozaffarian thanked the Biden administration and members of Congress for their leadership in making the conference happen. “We stand ready to support their efforts and move us forward,” he said. “The next phase of work for all of us across the nation will be after the conference, to ensure continued energy and attention on these critical issues and implementation of the national strategy for systemic change.”

Tokyo, Oct. 11 (Jiji Press)–Japanese schools are joining forces with metaverse platforms to nurture creators who can support the economy by making and selling digital content, such as avatars.
Last month, U.S. technology conglomerate Meta Platforms Inc., formerly Facebook Inc., announced a tie-up with the Kadokawa Dwango Educational Institute, which operates correspondence high schools in Japan, in offering educational programs focusing on virtual reality and augmented reality for over 1,200 students.
In an event held in Tokyo, students showed off their VR projects themed on a metaverse school.
Simon Milner, who is in charge of public policy in the Asia-Pacific region at Meta, said the metaverse will “work as similar kinds of new opportunity in the future” to ones that have been created by the internet.
The creators will be “at the forefront bringing this future closer,” he stressed.

Analysis | Crypto Regulations Are On The Front Burner This Week – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/analysis-crypto-regulations-are-on-the-front-burner-this-week-the-washington-post/
Good morning! I’m sitting in for Tim this morning and thankful I didn’t have to monitor any flight info yesterday. More below on the apparent Russian hack that knocked more than a dozen airport websites offline yesterday.
Below: Officials say flight operations weren’t affected by pro-Russian hackers’ denial-of-service attacks and in a speech today, the U.K. intelligence chief will warn about China’s use of technology.
Watch for new global rules for cryptocurrency, used by criminals to profit off cyber attacks
Washington is the center of the world for the cryptocurrency industry this week, as top crypto executives and global financial regulators converge on the city for a pair of meetings that could indicate how the sector will fit into the broader financial system.
The meetings come as U.S. law enforcement and national security officials warn that cybercriminals are using cryptocurrencies and tools to profit off cyberattacks and launder their ill-gotten gains.
U.S. policymakers take the stage first, starting today, as the two-day DC Fintech Week kicks off with speeches from acting comptroller of the currency Michael Hsu and Rostin Behnam, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission chair who has been angling to oversee more of the industry.
But a potentially bigger reveal will come as soon as Wednesday: The Financial Stability Board, which coordinates international financial regulation, is set to unveil its proposed global rules for crypto amid a conference of Group of 20 finance ministers. The board’s plan is expected to advocate a strict approach to ensuring digital assets don’t pose a systemic risk or allow terrorists and other criminals to fund their exploits.
The group has no formal power to set policy. But it has a track record of pushing its views into force. For one, its recommended capital and liquidity requirements for banks in the aftermath of the global financial crisis helped establish the new standard, Cowen Washington Research analyst Jaret Seiberg wrote in a note to clients. “That gives it clout.”
And U.S. regulators who have called for getting tough on the crypto industry play a key role in the group. “It’s fair to say the U.S. wants to lead on this globally and largely has been leading on it,” said Patrick Dougherty, a former Securities and Exchange Commission lawyer who is now on the board of the Global Digital Asset and Cryptocurrency Association.
The White House has called for oversight and enforcement in the cryptocurrency space, with officials citing massive North Korean hacks and the use of cryptocurrency in the ransomware ecosystem. President Biden is considering amendments to finance and other laws so that prosecutors can investigate and crack down on criminals using cryptocurrencies, the White House said.
Law enforcement officials have clawed back some ransoms paid to cybercriminals, and the Treasury Department has sanctioned cryptocurrency mixers that have been used by cybercriminals to launder their profits. But the cryptocurrency industry has been critical of the sanctions on Tornado Cash, a mixer, with cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase bankrolling a lawsuit to challenge the sanctions.
The crypto industry has won powerful friends in Congress, but federal financial watchdogs remain skeptical.
Just last week, the U.S. supercommittee of financial regulators known as the Financial Stability Oversight Council issued a warning that left unchecked, crypto could grow into a systemic financial threat.
SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, who sits on both that panel and the global board, has drawn criticism from the crypto industry for arguing that existing securities laws give him the authority he needs to police the industry.
The Financial Stability Board appears primed to make a similar case. Steven Maijoor, who is crafting the group’s policy, told Politico last month that a “lot of the activities in crypto assets and crypto assets markets resemble activities in the traditional financial system and therefore we take the approach: Same activity, same risk, same regulation.”
The board is also set to take a closer look at stablecoins, the digital tokens that peg their value to an external asset such as the dollar. The failure of the Terra stablecoin in May wiped out $40 billion in value and accelerated a downturn in crypto markets, underlining the urgency of establishing rules for issuers of those cryptocurrencies. Yet a congressional push to regulate stablecoins has foundered ahead of the midterm elections. Congress, rather than global regulators, still needs to resolve the matter with clearer rules for the assets, said Dario de Martino, co-head of the fintech and blockchain practice at law firm Allen & Overy.
In the meantime, the Crypto Council for Innovation, an industry group that takes an international approach, warned “a heavy-handed approach could cut this technology off at its knees.” Linda Jeng, the group’s chief global regulatory officer, said in a statement that global coordination “is a good thing. Flight operations weren’t affected by pro-Russian hackers’ denial-of-service attacks, officials say
Websites for a half dozen U.S. airports went offline after a group of pro-Russian hackers known as Killnet called for coordinated denial-of-service attacks on a list that included U.S. airports, Lori Aratani reports. In denial-of-service attacks, targets are flooded with traffic until they can’t respond or crash.
“Managers at multiple airports said they notified the FBI and the Transportation Security Administration about the cyberattacks,” Lori writes. “In a statement, the FBI said it was aware of the incident but had no additional information. The TSA declined to comment, referring inquiries to individual airports.”
Though the attacks were highly visible, Mandiant Vice President for Intelligence John Hultquist characterized denial-of-service attacks more as a “public nuisance” than a serious cybersecurity threat because they don’t target key internal systems that would affect the operations of an airport. But when such attacks do take place, they’re effective in drawing attention, he said.
The Killnet group has been behind other such attacks, including ones targeting European governments. Last week, the websites of some U.S. states went down after the group took aim at states, NBC News reported. Ukraine’s government-affiliated volunteer force known as the IT Army has rallied its supporters to launch waves of traffic directed at Russian sites, NBC News reported.
Former NSA employee who tried sending documents to Russia should be detained pending trial, prosecutors say
The crimes that former National Security Agency information systems security designer Jareh Dalke is being accused of — six counts of trying to send defense documents to Russia — are so serious that Dalke should be detained before his trial, prosecutors said in a filing. Dalke was an NSA employee for a month-long period this year; around a month after he left, he tried to contact Russian agents, prosecutors say.
Dalke sent documents on plans to update cryptographic programs, information on U.S. defenses and details about a foreign government’s military capabilities to an undercover FBI agent, prosecutors said.
In a sealed filing, Dalke “appears to concede that he is accused of a serious offense and therefore that he should only be released on the strictest of conditions,” the government said in its filing, noting that Dalke “claims that his background in the military and law enforcement weigh in his favor.” But prosecutors say he betrayed the United States — apparently out of a mix of “profit and ideology” — and needs to be held in custody.
A federal court is set to hold a hearing on Dalke’s detention today. Dalke’s attorneys didn’t respond to a request for comment.
U.K. intelligence chief to warn about China’s use of technology
GCHQ Director Jeremy Fleming will warn in a speech today that China’s pursuit of digital currencies and satellite systems could allow the country’s government to easily track its citizens, NBC News‘s Dan De Luce reports. Fleming is set to deliver the China-focused remarks at the Royal United Services Institute think tank.
U.S. and U.K. officials have been warning that China’s government poses a significant threat to the United States. In July, FBI Director Christopher A. Wray and MI5 Director General Ken McCallum warned that Western firms and governments are under relentless pressure from the Chinese government.
Fleming also plans to discuss Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, De Luce reports. “Far from the inevitable Russian military victory that their propaganda machine spouted, it’s clear that Ukraine’s courageous action on the battlefield and in cyberspace is turning the tide,” Fleming plans to say.

U.S. Judge Approves Sales Process For Shares In Citgo Petroleum’s Parent – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-judge-approves-sales-process-for-shares-in-citgo-petroleums-parent-reuters/
HOUSTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) – An auction schedule to sell shares in Citgo Petroleum’s parent company, which could force a breakup of the Venezuela-owned U.S. oil refiner, was approved by a U.S. federal judge and filed on Tuesday.
U.S. District Judge Leonard P. Stark’s order sets bidding and sales procedures, hiring of investment banker Evercore Group and directs an approach to the U.S. Treasury Department to seek a decision on any share sale. The Treasury has protected Citgo from creditors by previously not allowing transactions.
Citgo declined to comment.
Delaware District court judge Stark last year approved the sale of shares in PDV Holding, whose only asset is Citgo shares, to pay Canadian miner Crystallex $970 million. The debt is outstanding from an expropriation judgment on its Venezuelan assets.
Citgo is the crown jewel of Venezuela’s overseas assets, and has split from its Caracas-based ultimate parent, Venezuelan state-run oil firm PDVSA. It is currently under control of Venezuela’s opposition leader Juan Guaido.

Research Reveals Racial Disparities In Access To New Mammography Technology Mirage News
Research Reveals Racial Disparities In Access To New Mammography Technology – Mirage News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/research-reveals-racial-disparities-in-access-to-new-mammography-technology-mirage-news/
OAK BROOK, Ill. – Among the Medicare population from 2005 to 2020, Black women had less access to new mammography technology compared with white women, even when getting their mammograms at the same institution, according to a study of over 4 million claims published in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
Black women are 40% more likely than white women to die from breast cancer, even though the cancer incidence rate among Black and white women is approximately the same.
Mammographic technology used to screen for breast cancer has undergone two major transitions since 2000: first, the transition from screen-film mammography (SFM) to full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and second, the transition to digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT). While these advances in early detection mean that more women can survive breast cancer, not all women have equal access to these newer technologies.
More sufficient, initial Medicare coverage can aid access to new breast cancer screening technologies in underserved areas and reduce the duration of related racial and regional breast cancer care disparities. Such disparities are transitory and eventually ease as technology dissipates from affluent areas – with more private insurance coverage – to underserved communities where public insurance may be more prevalent. However, this process is prolonged by Medicare reimbursement that is 1.2 to 1.8 times lower than that of private insurers.
“In the increasingly competitive healthcare environment, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) cannot expect medical providers to ignore these competitive forces and engage in health equity efforts without regard for the economic consequences by locating technology and services where reimbursement is low,” said study co-author Eric W. Christensen, Ph.D., principal research scientist in health economics for the Harvey L. Neiman Health Policy Institute and adjunct professor of health services management at The University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “Inequities result when lower payments make technology investments economically unsustainable for practices that serve higher proportions of Medicare patients.”
The study was the work of the Neiman Health Policy Institute in collaboration with the Radiology Health Equity Coalition (RHEC), an initiative of 10 major radiology organizations to positively impact health care equity.
“The Radiology Health Equity Coalition understands the indispensable role research plays in addressing health disparities,” said study co-author Jinel Scott, M.D., M.B.A., associate professor of clinical radiology in the Department of Radiology at State University of New York Downstate Health Sciences University, and chief quality officer at New York Health and Hospitals/Kings County, in New York City. “Our paper is an example of the coalition’s goal to evolve from predominantly descriptive analyses to predictive and ultimately prescriptive approaches to combating the patient outcomes that are related to inequities in health care delivery.” An at-large director on the RSNA Board of Directors, Dr. Scott serves as RSNA’s representative to the RHEC.
For the study, Dr. Christensen, Dr. Scott and colleagues set out to examine the relationship between race and use of newer mammographic technology in women receiving mammography services.
The researchers conducted a retrospective study of women aged 40-89 with Medicare fee-for-service insurance who got mammograms between January 2005 and December 2020, using a 5% sample of all Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries.
The researchers analyzed 4,028,696 institutional mammography claims for women (mean age 72 years). Within an institution, the odds ratio (OR) of Black women receiving digital mammography rather than SFM in 2005 was 0.80 when compared with white women. These differences remained until 2009. Compared with white women, the use of DBT within an institution was less likely for Black women from 2015 to 2020 (OR: 0.84).
Across institutions, there were racial differences in digital mammography use, which peaked at 3.8 percentage points less for Black compared with white women in 2011 and then decreased to 1.2 percentage points less in 2016. These results show the transitory nature of these differences, and while the transition to DBT is still underway, those differences also appear to be subsiding.
The study found evidence of racial differences in the years following the introduction of newer mammography technology. These disparities include both within institution and comparable-institution differences. According to Dr. Christensen, advocacy for favorable reimbursement and incentive policies may diminish these differences if kept apace of evolving technologies.
“Current reimbursement contributes to inequity because locating new technology in facilities that serve patients with public insurance, Medicare and Medicaid, is not economically sustainable,” he said. “CMS can create economic incentives to lessen disparities through reimbursement that is either comparable to private payers or that more directly incentivizes adoption of newer technology in underserved communities.”
The researchers stipulate that organizations have a responsibility to be equitable in the provision of care. The ability for them to do so will be enhanced by reimbursement policies that facilitate investing in sites that serve disadvantaged individuals. The fact that the racial differences for digital mammography were transitory and subsided as new technology became universal supports the real potential for such policy changes to mitigate transitional disparities associated with technological advances. Equitable provision of breast cancer screening has the potential to improve population health and supporting health policy can propel the U.S. health care system closer to this goal.
The RHEC includes RSNA, ACR, American Board of Radiology, American Medical Association Section Council on Radiology, Association of University Radiologists, National Medical Association Section on Radiology and Radiation Oncology, Society of Chairs of Academic Radiology Departments, Society of Interventional Radiologists, Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and American Association of Physicists in Medicine. Several other groups, including specialty and state radiology organizations, have also joined the initiative as Coalition partners.
“The RSNA supports the work of the RHEC and values an intersociety approach that provides members with the information and tools needed to be advocates for the communities they serve,” Dr. Scott said.

Money Saving Strategies and Key Destinations from Leading Travel Planning Service
, /PRNewswire/ — With travel forecast reports predicting a continued rise in costs into 2023, travelers will have to be more judicious with how they spend their vacation budgets.
Greg Buzulencia, CEO of ViaHero, a leading travel planning service that connects travelers with locals in 22 destinations, is an industry expert with years of experience planning value-minded trips to destinations around the world. Buzulencia offers some smart strategies to help travelers keep inflation in check and make their next trip both affordable and enjoyable.
“One way to stretch travel dollars is to choose a destination where the dollar is strong. Cuba, Mexico, and South America are great values right now, and ViaHero has seen an increase in bookings in these regions, where the U.S. dollar goes further than places like Europe,” says Buzulencia.
“Cuba is a great destination for 2023, because it’s become easier to travel there. American has announced daily flights from Miami to five new destinations: Santa Clara, Varadero, Holguin, Camaguey, and Santiago de Cuba. These are in addition to the current daily flights that airlines already operate.”
Another tip from Buzulencia is to be strategic when booking airfare to ensure the best prices. The Google Flights team analyzed five years’ worth of flight data to provide consumers with insights on how to book the cheapest flights. For one, It’s 12% cheaper to fly on a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and that number jumps to 20% cheaper when booking domestic flights. As for when to book, prices appear to bottom out about 44 days before departure dates. And, adding a layover can save up to 20%. One common myth busted: booking flights on a Tuesday doesn’t save money.
As for booking hotels, Buzulencia suggests doing some research to help decide which destination is least affected by inflation. According to a recent study by Amex GBT, hotel prices will jump across the board by up to 30% next year. The highest jump? Buenos Aires. Lowest? Try Amsterdam or England.
Many travelers either book their own trips or use a traditional travel agent. Instead, using a travel planning service such as ViaHero can help save money in the long run. ViaHero connects travelers directly with locals at destinations around the world. These local “Heroes” then create customized guidebooks based on personal preferences and travel styles. Using ViaHero is a win-win for both traveler and locals. Travelers get to experience a unique side of a destination and travel independently, while saving time and money in the planning process. Heroes can also assist in saving travelers money by recommending inexpensive or even free activities. They also know where to get the best food and hotels, for the best value.
ViaHero charges $40 for each day of an itinerary. This modest fee can save travelers an average of 18 hours of planning and up to $345 per trip.
Another tip is to travel during shoulder or off season. Places like Central America have great deals in the “rainy season,” typically mid-November to May, but this doesn’t mean rain every day. As a bonus, travelers will experience fewer crowds and lusher, greener landscapes.

Bank Of England In Fresh Emergency Move To Calm Markets BBC
Bank Of England In Fresh Emergency Move To Calm Markets – BBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bank-of-england-in-fresh-emergency-move-to-calm-markets-bbc/

The Bank of England has warned of a “material risk” to financial stability as it made a fresh emergency move to try to calm investors.
It said it would buy more government bonds to try to stabilise their price and prevent a sell-off that could put some pension funds at risk of collapse.
It is the third time the Bank has had to step in since the government’s mini-budget sparked alarm among investors.
The chancellor promised huge tax cuts without saying how he would fund them.
The prime minister’s spokesman said she “remained confident” that her plans would boost growth and that she was in regular contact with the Bank.
On Monday, in a bid to reassure investors Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng said he would bring forward his economic plan where he will spell out how he plans to pay for the tax cuts and provide an independent forecast on the UK economy’s prospects.
Ahead of this the Bank had also said it was prepared to double the amount of bonds it was buying to help support their price, but reiterated it would end this support as planned on Friday.
Government borrowing costs rose sharply despite these actions as investors continued to remain wary of buying bonds.
Shadow chief secretary to the Treasury Pat McFadden said the fact the Bank had been forced to step in for a second day running created “renewed pressure for the chancellor to reverse his budget.”
The government raises money it needs for spending by selling bonds to investors. The Bank first stepped in on 28 September, when days after the mini-budget, investors began demanding higher rates of interest on those bonds and government borrowing costs surged to worrying levels.
The market turmoil had forced pension funds to sell bonds due to concerns over their solvency, but this threatened to create a downward spiral in bond prices as more were offloaded and had left some pension funds close to collapse.
By buying bonds, the Bank is hoping to help keep their price stable and prevent investors selling them.
The turmoil has fed through to the mortgage market, where hundreds of products have been suspended due to concerns about how to price these long-term loans.
Last week, interest rates on typical two and five-year fixed rate mortgages topped 6% for the first time in over a decade.
Under pressure from its MPs to change course, the government has been forced into a series of embarrassing climbdowns.
Among other things it had to U-turn on a promise to scrap the top rate of income tax.
On Tuesday, the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) think tank warned that Mr Kwarteng would have to make “big and painful cuts” of up to £60bn to balance the books when he announces his economic plan on 31 October.
Mr Kwarteng will take questions from MPs this afternoon in the Commons for the first time since being appointed.
“A material risk to UK financial stability” are words the Bank of England uses rarely, a warning of a threat to the financial system it can’t confidently ignore. It’s even more rare for several senior Bank executives to have indicated part of the blame for the turmoil may lie at the government’s door, the result of domestic policy.
They’re not alone. The sharp rise in the cost of new government borrowing – the interest on those bonds – reflects an anxiety amongst investors that its tax-cutting plans risk the UK overstretching itself. And it’s pensions funds and borrowers who are hit by the fallout.
It’s the Bank who – again, a rare event – had to try to ease their pain. But it’s made it clear that the medicine is a stop gap – and the lingering unease in the market emphasises it’s ultimately looking to what it sees as the source of its unease – the chancellor’s approach – for a remedy.
Resolving this crisis of faith will ultimately depend on what the chancellor unveils in his Hallowe’en plan. If the IFS is right, the price of restoring credibility could involve upwards of £60bn worth of cuts to public spending.
Explaining its intervention on Tuesday, the Bank of England said government bonds had seen a “significant re-pricing” since the start of the week and warned there was a risk of a fresh downturn in markets.
It said it would now buy a wider range of bonds as well as continue to buy bonds as part of the original emergency measures it launched on 28 September.
Sir John Gieve, a former deputy governor for fiscal stability at the Bank, said the Bank was primarily stepping in to protect pension funds, many of which hold government bonds as investments.
However, he said the “underlying problem” was that markets did not believe the government would be able to cut spending enough before its growth measures took effect.
“The underlying problem came on the back of the announcement of huge amounts of extra borrowing and without a clear plan on how to pay for them,” Sir John told the BBC.
“And the latest speculation on that is that in order to make the books balance [Mr Kwarteng] will have to promise [billions of] spending cuts. It’s one thing to say that, but can he actually deliver that?”
Prime Minister Liz Truss has said that around £43bn of promised tax cuts will boost UK economic growth and therefore pay for themselves.
The chancellor has also committed to publishing an independent forecast of the UK’s economic prospects by the OBR, the independent budget watchdog, at the same time as his economic plan on 31 October – something he declined to do with his mini-budget.
But Ms Truss faces a potential rebellion from her MPs after declining to say whether she would increase benefits in line with inflation next April.
It is thought that increasing benefits in line with wages instead could save the government £5bn.
50 Million To Turbo-Charge Research Into Health Inequalities Affecting Local Communities News-Medical.Net
£50 Million To Turbo-Charge Research Into Health Inequalities Affecting Local Communities – News-Medical.Net https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/50-million-to-turbo-charge-research-into-health-inequalities-affecting-local-communities-news-medical-net/
People set to benefit from a £50 million research boost to tackle health inequalities in local areas and improve health outcomes across the country.
The significant investment, overseen by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), will enable 13 local authorities to set up pioneering Health Determinants Research Collaborations (HDRCs) between with experts and academics to address knowledge gaps in local areas.
This will enable new high-quality research into the local challenges affecting people’s health – such as facilitating research to better understand and introduce interventions to help with childhood obesity, Covid recovery, mental wellbeing and drug use.
Local authorities up and down the UK are being awarded funding – from Plymouth and London to Newcastle and Aberdeen – to ensure health disparities are being addressed across the board.
This forms a key part of the government’s Plan for Patients by supporting people to stay well and within the community, easing pressure on health and care services and enabling people to access the care they need, when they need it.
Minister of State for Health, Robert Jenrick, said:
The pandemic shone a light on the stark health inequalities that exist across the country – we are committed to levelling up the health of the nation.
This funding will drive progress to address health challenges locally, particularly in the places and communities most affected by ill health such as high levels of obesity, drug use and poor mental health.
Everyone should be able to live long, healthy lives regardless of their background and where they live, and this new research will help us deliver on our ambition.”
This is the first time funding for research into health disparities has been given to local authorities for them to lead on innovative new projects within their communities, signaling the government’s commitment to leveling up.
Every collaboration will be set up in partnership between universities and local government, capitalizing on the world-leading experience and skills of the academic community. This will support the development of better data and evidence to inform local decisions to improve people’s health and reduce variations in healthy life expectance between rich and poor.
The funding will also help to stimulate economic growth across the country – particularly in some of the most deprived areas – by creating new jobs within research, as well as identifying local solutions to address some of the key challenges facing our society such as obesity and poor mental wellbeing.
Professor Lucy Chappell, NIHR Chief Executive Officer, said:
Millions of people living in Britain’s towns, cities and regions face a huge range of public health challenges, made even more acute during the Covid pandemic. Thanks to NIHR this vitally needed research funding will provide a foundation to galvanise local authorities’ capacity and capability to conduct high-quality research.
I’m always personally struck by how people working in local government have the added advantage of knowing their local areas and communities. This investment will equip them to embed a lasting legacy of research culture to help local populations take huge steps forward in tackling health inequalities.”
Professor Brian Ferguson, Director of the NIHR Public Health Research Programme, said:
Many people living in communities across the country are facing major challenges that are impacting on their health. Our newly launched HDRCs will serve as nationally recognised centres of excellence, boosting local government’s ability to tackle these challenges by enabling breathing space to become more research active.
This is a hugely important step forward in one of NIHR’s key aims to help local government develop research that improves health and wellbeing. By focusing on the wider determinants of health such as employment, housing, education and the physical environment, the areas we are supporting have a tremendous opportunity to make a lasting impact on health inequalities and wider deprivation.”
Professor Jim McManus, President of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health, said:
We know that health inequalities are one of the major barriers facing communities the length and breadth of the country, especially for disadvantaged groups and areas.
HDRCs will help drive the research culture within local government, building on the local knowledge that authorities already have and enable what is being done to be more readily researched and evaluated to make a difference to local people.”
In addition to the research funding, staff working across the health and social care sector will be better equipped to tackle health inequalities from today, following the publication of a new e-learning resource developed by the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and Health Education England (HEE).
The free-to-access module brings together bite-size learning on what health inequalities are, as well as the actions and interventions that frontline staff, leaders, and commissioners can take to address them in their day-to-day work.
It has already been proven to give users a deep understanding of health inequalities and how they can be tackled, helping to improve quality of life while reducing costs to the NHS and benefitting the wider economy.
Background information
The HDRCs formally commenced on 1 October 2022, with three of the 13 undertaking additional developmental work to enable HDRC status by 1 October 2023.

Why Bob Costas Is Calling Yankees Vs. Guardians 2022 ALDS Series Sporting News
Why Bob Costas Is Calling Yankees Vs. Guardians 2022 ALDS Series – Sporting News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/why-bob-costas-is-calling-yankees-vs-guardians-2022-alds-series-sporting-news/
What an unfortunate thing to happen on “Dozen-Egg Night.”
Viewers tuning into the ALDS on Tuesday night will hear a familiar, velvety voice coming over the airwaves — that’s because Bob Costas returns to the postseason baseball scene, decades after hanging up his microphone on the equally high-stakes BASEketball scene.
Costas heads up a duo that features former MLB player and current analyst Ron Darling in the TBS booth for the Yankees-Guardians ALDS series, marking a return of Costas to the broadcast booth for a playoff series for the first time in over 20 years.
MORE: Watch Yankees-Guardians ALDS starting Tuesday
And, of course, for Costas, baseball is still his first love.
“It’s the sport that I still follow most closely,” Costas told The Athletic. “Am I still interested in other sports? Yes. But am I connected to baseball? Yeah, more so than the other sports.”
Here’s why Costas is calling the ALDS starting on Tuesday night:
Why is Bob Costas calling Yankees-Guardians?
Costas is calling the Yankees-Guardians ALDS as an expansion of his TBS duties that he’s handled throughout the 2022 season; Costas has been calling games for TBS’ Tuesday night national package in 2022, sharing play-by-play role with Brian Anderson.
Costas has also held spot duty for MLB Network and YES Network recently, but this marks the first time since the 2000 ALCS between the Yankees and Mariners that he’ll have the opportunity to call a playoff series in its entirety.
In years past, Costas has called a game here or there during the division series for MLB Network, but not a full series.
Calling a full series, of course, is a benefit for him (via The Athletic):
To do a full series like this, I haven’t done that since I did the ALCS for NBC in 2000, the Mariners against the Yankees. So it allows you to get into a rhythm. It isn’t quite like playing, but it’s the closest thing to it. You remember every pitch. So if something happens in Game 3 and it somehow connects to some tension from Game 1, you’re on top of it in the way that a good local announcer would be.
Costas has actually worked with TBS throughout the 2022 season, calling “Tuesday Night Baseball” games for the network’s nationally televised games.
Beyond the ALDS, Costas will host TBS’ on-site studio for the ALCS, joined by Pedro Martinez, Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson.
Not Even The Facebook Employees Want To Use Their Metaverse Gamereactor UK
Not Even The Facebook Employees Want To Use Their Metaverse – Gamereactor UK https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/not-even-the-facebook-employees-want-to-use-their-metaverse-gamereactor-uk/
Talk of creating a metaverse has been going on for a long time and tech giants are ploughing billions into it. However, no one seems to be going as hard as Facebook and their Horizon Worlds concept.
The idea is to create a kind of new internet where we can walk around in a virtual world and do things together. The idea, as previously stated, is not new in any way. One of the more successful concepts is Second Life, which still has failed to get a major user base, and the big problem with the metaverse idea is the question “why?”.
Neither we nor the companies have a good answer to this and when Mark Zuckerberg himself tried to impress us with a Facebook post showcasing Horizon Worlds in August, it was actually hard to keep us from laughing, as it mostly looked like an old Wii game (that’s us being nice!). Now it turns out, via leaks to The Verge” target=”_blank”The Verge, that even the employees at Facebook doesn’t like their metaverse, and therefore don’t use it. A manager of the project writes in a memo to employees:
“For many of us, we don’t spend that much time in Horizon and our dogfooding dashboards show this pretty clearly. Why is that? Why don’t we love the product we’ve built so much that we use it all the time? The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?”
This was later followed up by another memo some time later, in which the same manager apparently noted that the call for employees to use the service they actually work on was not heeded:
“Everyone in this organization should make it their mission to fall in love with Horizon Worlds. You can’t do that without using it. Get in there. Organize times to do it with your colleagues or friends, in both internal builds but also the public build so you can interact with our community.”
How do you feel about this yourself, how keen are you on Facebook’s Horizon Worlds service and the metaverse in general?

Top Air Fryers and Pressure Cookers
The Ninja AF101 is small but mighty! It can fit two pounds of french fries, which is certainly more than enough for two people. It bakes, roasts and dehydrates, plus the basket and rack are dishwasher-safe.
“The Ninja takes up slightly less space than the stand mixer,” said a happy Amazon shopper. “It’s lightweight and easy to pull out from under the cabinet to use (to allow for airflow). I like it so much… So much easier to clean than a pan and my stovetop. It cooked breaded chicken rounds, fish, and tater tots and in about 10 minutes. Much less time than a toaster oven.”
It preheats much faster than a regular oven and is much more efficient as well. Best of all, clean up is a breeze! Both the tray and basket are nonstick and dishwasher-safe!
One shopper called it the best kitchen appliance they ever bought: “This gets used at least once a week and sometimes every night of the week. Game changer for cooking during the summer and not having to use my oven. This doesn’t heat up my house. I’ve cooked so many different things in this (not just frozen food processed food) steak, veggies, stir fry, bbq chicken, fajitas, fries, tenders…I make my toast in it every morning. It takes some patience in getting the right temp. and cooking time, but there are many websites/resources to assist with this. Once you get the times/temps, write them down and you’re good to go.”
The Cosori Pro Air Fryer is much beloved for a reason: It just works! It’s easy to clean and it crisps up foods beautifully. With over 74,000 five-star ratings, the it makes cooking fun, easy and approachable.
“I have used this air fryer every single day since I purchased it,” said one happy shopper. “I am amazed at how easy it makes cooking chicken breasts, chicken tenders, and pork chops. I especially like how the meat is fully cooked (I test using a meat thermometer) but still so tender and juicy…. I am so happy I finally purchased an air fryer, and this Cosori is still easy to clean (even after I made pork chops with a lot of sauce the other night), easy to use, and has made cooking so much easier.”
COSORI
Cosori Air Fryer Toaster Oven
$117$150Save $33
$117 at Amazon
Want a toaster oven that can do everything? Then this might be it — it can air fry as well as bake, roast, and dehydrate! It also works with Alexa. Save an extra $10 by applying the on-page coupon!
The Cosori Air Fryer Toaster Oven can fit up to six slices of bread, a 12-inch pizza or even a five-pound chicken. It’s a lot faster and more efficient than a regular convection oven, plus it’s super smart so you can control it with just your voice!
Even professional chefs love it: “I am a chef, and I run a teaching kitchen. I already had two full-size gas ovens and one full-size electric oven. I wanted to have a backup so that students could socially distance but didn’t want a lot of space taken up. I bought this oven in early December and have been putting it through its paces so that I know its weaknesses and strengths so there are no surprises during cooking classes. After using it a few times daily for more than a month and tapping into all of its features, I highly recommend this sweet little oven. It is fast, efficient, easy to use, and big enough to cook a sizeable roast or chicken.”
What sets this Instant Pot apart from the rest is that it has five programmable settings which you can set for your own favorite recipes. Plus, the inner pot comes with stay-cool silicone handles, so you can take it from your Instant Pot to the counter! Other features include overheating protection, a safe locking lid, and a gentle steam release which helps reduce noise and prevents splashes.
One five-star review on Amazon says it makes the best chicken ever. “I bought this for my mother… and I’m so glad I did. She would not stop talking about it for months and still uses it a few times a week. She cooks a whole chicken in it and it is the easiest meal ever. I don’t know what magic is in this machine but the chicken is so juicy and never dry. I have never experienced a chicken like the one we cook in this machine.”
The Instant Pot Pro Crisp has an air fryer lid, which lets you add even more functionality to the Instant Pot. It adds an air fryer, a roaster, a mini oven, a broiler and a dehydrator. It also has an inner pot that is safe for the stovetop.
“The duality of this machine is fabulous!!!” exclaimed an enthusiastic shopper. “The air fryer works like a dream and I made the most amazing Chili Verde in 45 minutes thanks to the pressure cooker. If you like really good crispy food, a delicious roast or stew in under an hour, and easy clean up, this is the magic machine for you!”
It’s large enough to fit four generously sized burgers and about a pound of fries! Bonus: It’s so powerful that you can easily turn frozen food into char-grilled wonders in under 25 minutes.
“It’s a Ninja innovation,” exclaims this enthusiastic five-star review. “In a nutshell, it’s a very well-designed and engineered indoor grill with the added benefits of the air frying that I love so much along with baking/roasting functions and dehydration…. This thing is…pretty much perfect. It does have a significant footprint BUT if it’s something that’s going to be used all the time, as I do, the physical size doesn’t really matter…. In sum, this Foodi rocks the house. It’s an incredibly valuable addition to my kitchen and even only having it for a short time it’s already become a nearly-indispensable part of my kitchen equipment.”
This Philips Air fryer has a 3-quart capacity which will easily fit a bag of frozen fries. It can air fry, bake, grill, roast, reheat, dehydrate and more. And since it’s power-efficient, it will heat up much faster than a traditional oven.
“This thing is EXCELLENT!!” said a five-star Amazon review. “So far I cooked chicken, fish, french fries and onion rings and they have never tasted better. I put a whole chicken in it and it came out juicy and with crispy skin, without the fat. Frozen onion rings and french fries were crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Fish (I cooked cod) was fantastic. Cleanup is pretty easy. It all just wipes off clean. I have not tried to put it into the dishwasher, even though it says you can. I recommend this to everyone.”
Best coffee and tea devices
The coffee pot has a no-drip spout and a simple on/off button — all you need to make the perfect wake-up cup.
“Nice coffeemaker, and at just 13” tall, shorter than most, fits under my kitchen cabinets well,” said a five-star review. “Makes good coffee. Our last maker didn’t have an auto shutoff so could easily scorch leftovers in an unattended pot. This maker shuts off after an hour, too soon for leisurely sippers! … we get around that by resetting the on/off button, which then extends the heated plate an additional hour.”
All you need to do is add your favorite Nespresso Vertuo capsule, and you’re able to enjoy a fresh cup in seconds. It features a large 40-ounce water tank plus a 17-count used capsule container.
A five-star shopper on Amazon loves it: “I can’t rave enough about the Nespresso machine! For one, you can decide where the water tank goes. It can be on the right side as pictured. Directly behind. Or to the left. It’s easy to turn. The water tank has an impressive capacity. There is no max marking, only a min marking…. So far we’ve had no issues and we use this twice a day. Soooo easy!! It’s got a quick warm-up time too…. I love this machine. It’s quiet, it’s easy and it makes an amazing cup of caffeinated deliciousness!
This kettle has a hold-temp function that will keep the contents of the kettle warm for up to one hour! The five different temperature settings are designed for specific brews: white, oolong, green, black tea or coffee.
One shopper said it’s great for every use. “It’s the best. Hands down. So easy to program, takes 60 seconds to go from cold tap to a perfect boil, and super simple clean. I even brought it to the office so my co-workers and I could have a fancy coffee day and instantly 2 folks bought one…. Highly recommend if you drink tea, hot toddies, pour over or French press coffee, or just want some warm milk before bed.”
Best Blenders, Food Processors and Mixers
The Ninja Nutri-Blender is powerful enough to crush ice and break down fruits and veggies. It comes with dishwasher-safe parts along with two 20-ounce Ninja to-go cups so you can easily sip on your smoothie on your work commute.
“You cannot go wrong with this machine,” raved this five-star review. “Everything about it is excellent. It looks great and takes up very little space. It appears to have the power of a...
Play-To-Earn Project MetaBlaze Raises $3.5 Million In Presale Ahead Of NFT Launch Cryptonews
Play-To-Earn Project MetaBlaze Raises $3.5 Million In Presale Ahead Of NFT Launch – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/play-to-earn-project-metablaze-raises-3-5-million-in-presale-ahead-of-nft-launch-cryptonews/
Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights by crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com.
New crypto project MetaBlaze is in the final stages of its presale ahead of its NFT mint on October 15.
The project, which combines NFTs and play-to-earn (P2E) gaming, has less than $600,000 of tokens to sell out before it hits its hard cap of $4 million.
The project will then launch its NFT collection of 10,000 MetaGoblins on October 15 – with the goblins to feature in-game utility.
What is MetaBlaze?
MetaBlaze is a new crypto project that sees players collect Bitcoin and other cryptos while mining for Terranzinite crystals in the MetaBlaze universe.
The project is unique in that while players can earn rewards for taking part in games and events in their metaverse, the rewards will not be distributed in the native $MBLZ token.
Instead, MetaBlaze has enabled players to reap rewards in BTC, Ethereum, Solana and BNB, rolling out the first-ever revolving rewards pool within its Blaziverse decentralized app (dApp).
The first P2E mini-game is MetaMinez, a strategic, time-bound game that generates rewards.
Players enter a mine, select a miner, commit $MLBZ tokens and a life petal – as well as any other in-game consumables – needed for that specific outcome.
Total Mining Power is then calculated and after a fixed duration, the game is finished, and rewards are distributed.
With many play-to-earn games falling by the wayside in 2022, the MetaBlaze developers have focused on a narrative-driven experience for its flagship game.
The as-yet-untitled game is a fully immersive on-chain RPG where players explore the vastness of Galaxia Blue and complete quests along the way.
Details are currently limited, but players will battle over key areas of space, control trade routes and economic hubs.
What are MetaGoblins?
MetaGoblins are a collection of 10,000 unique NFTs that will be the primary asset in MetaMinez.
Unlike the in-game Goblins, which can only be used once, MetaGoblins can be used over and over and act as an in-game multiplier for a player’s Total Mining Power.
They come in four rarity tiers (8,897 Mystic, 1,000 Epic, 100 Legendary and 3 Rare King) and will have one of four Land Focus Types (Carbon, Glacial, Igneous, Sedimentary).
The MetaGoblins NFTs will be minted from Saturday, October 15 on Launchpad.xyz.
MBLZ Token
As mentioned above, the $MBLZ token presale is less than $600,000 from reaching its hard cap.
The BEP-20 token has a max supply of 420 billion but rather than being solely a token to hold and secure, it will act to enhance a player’s experience with MetaBlaze.
The more tokens one holds the more they will get out of the project – for example, 1 MBLZ equates to one Mining Rig in MetaMinez and the more mining rigs a player deploys the more likely they are to win rewards in other cryptos.
MBLZ will also be the only currency for in-game consumables and mystery boxes, which will enhance the player’s experience and ability.
Furthermore, the developers have made the token deflationary, with a percentage of all MBLZ transactions being burned and eventually 48% of the total supply being permanently removed.
Only 10% of tokens – 42 million – are on sale during the presale phase, with 18% also set to be burned at launch.
MBLZ will have its initial exchange offering (IEO) on PancakeSwap with a list price of $0.0002.
The date is not yet confirmed.
MetaBlaze Verdict
MetaBlaze is a unique new project that combines play-to-earn gaming with NFT ownership.
The project has a fully doxxed and public team that has had its KYC verification by market leading blockchain security firm Certik.
It also has strong tokenomics – similarly audited by Certik – and a robust burn system that could see it gain in price in the coming months.
Furthermore, the game will offer rewards in other cryptos, a unique quirk that will appeal to many gamers, and has been developed in a narrative-driven fashion to keep players coming back.
Despite the ongoing bear market, finding and investing in good presale projects has proven to be a solid strategy to return gains. We have analyzed a full MetaGoblins price prediction here.
However, it is important you conduct independent research and your own due diligence.
For more information on the project read the MetaBlaze Whitepaper and join the Telegram group.

Israel Lebanon Agree To Maritime Border Deal Brokered By The U.S. Axios
Israel, Lebanon Agree To Maritime Border Deal Brokered By The U.S. – Axios https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/israel-lebanon-agree-to-maritime-border-deal-brokered-by-the-u-s-axios/
Officials in Israel and Lebanon announced Tuesday they have accepted a U.S.-mediated agreement on a maritime border between the countries.
Why it matters: Once signed, the historic deal between the two traditional enemies will allow the beginning of natural gas exploration in the disputed area in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and reduce the threat of regional war.
The dispute is over a potentially gas-rich, 330-square-mile disputed area of the Mediterranean Sea with an estimated value reaching billions of dollars.
The need for a deal has become especially urgent as the Karish rig, a major Israeli gas project that Israel’s government says is south of the disputed area, prepares to come online. Hezbollah has called the beginning of production in the Karish rig a red line.
What they’re saying: “This is an historic achievement that will strengthen Israel’s security, inject billions into Israel’s economy, and ensure the stability of our northern border,” Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said Tuesday in announcing that Israel had agreed to the final draft proposal.
“The draft agreement meets all the security and economic principles laid out by Israel,” he added.
Lebanese President Michel Aoun officially announced that Lebanon accepted the final U.S. proposal and said he hopes an agreement can be announced as soon as possible.
The big picture: U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein in the past year resumed efforts to reach a deal after efforts by previous officials over the last decade failed.
Israeli national security adviser Eyal Hulata said Tuesday that all of the Israeli government’s demands in the maritime border negotiations with Lebanese officials were met.
“The changes we asked for in the text were made. All of Isrsel’s security interests were safeguarded. We are on a path towards a historic agreement,” he added.
Lebanese chief negotiator Elias Bou Saab told Reuters the proposed agreement “takes into consideration all of Lebanon’s requirements” and “could imminently lead to a historic deal.”
Between the lines: The agreement still faces several challenges on the Israeli side. The security cabinet, which is expected to meet on Wednesday, will likely approve the agreement, but it also needs to be approved by the full government plenary.
Alternate Prime Minister Naftali Bennett has veto power in the plenary, though at this time it appears he won’t use it.
The agreement will be reviewed by the Knesset for 14 days and then go back to the government plenary for final approval.
Flashback: A week ago, it appeared the two sides were headed toward a deal. But negotiations broke down after Israeli officials rejected comments by their Lebanese counterparts on the draft agreement, claiming they were a “material breach” of the text.
Israeli officials were concerned about their Lebanese counterparts’ refusal to recognize the three-mile security line of buoys Israel placed in the sea between the countries, and the Lebanese reservations about the compensation Israel would get for its economic rights in the disputed area.
But U.S. officials continued to mediate between the parties. And Israeli and U.S. officials said on Monday night that a solution was found to the remaining issues and a final text was sent to the parties.
What to watch: Several right-wing Israeli NGOs appealed to the supreme court against the agreement.
The supreme court process could halt the final approval of the agreement and potentially stop it completely until after the Nov. 1 Israeli election.

Donna Rozar And Lisa Boero Vie For 69th Assembly District Seat Marshfield News-Herald
Donna Rozar And Lisa Boero Vie For 69th Assembly District Seat – Marshfield News-Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/donna-rozar-and-lisa-boero-vie-for-69th-assembly-district-seat-marshfield-news-herald/
Incumbent Donna M. Rozar, a Republican, will face Democratic challenger Lisa Boero in the race for Wisconsin’s 69th Assembly District seat. Rozar is seeking her second term in office.
The 69th Assembly District covers the northwest corner of Wood County, including a large portion of Marshfield, southwest Marathon County, eastern Clark County and a portion of northcentral Jackson County.
To learn more about registering to vote and to find your polling place, visit My Vote Wisconsin.
The Marshfield News-Herald and Wausau Daily Herald asked each of the candidates to address important issues in the district and why they believe they are the best candidate for the position.
Donna M. Rozar
Age: 72
Residence: Marshfield
Occupation: Retired RN/nurse educator
Campaign website: voterozarforassembly.com
Lisa Boero
Age: 49
Residence: Marshfield
Occupation: Attorney
Campaign website: campaign.lisaboero.com
Why are you running for office?
Rozar: I bring a unique perspective to the issues discussed in Madison because of my work and life experiences. As a registered nurse and Wood County Board supervisor, I have knowledge that can be used to make an impact on public policy. It has been effective over the past two years, and I would like to continue that input in the next legislative session.
Boero: I felt called to make a difference in my community.
What makes you the better candidate?
Rozar: My experience over the past legislative session working with the majority party. I have made connections that will help my friends and neighbors in rural Wisconsin with the issues that are important to us. I look forward to building on those relationships.
Boero: My district needs common-sense solutions to so many issues, and I think that my legal background will help me to navigate these issues successfully.
What is the most pressing issue facing Wisconsin, and how would you address it?
Rozar: Inflation is an additional tax on those who can least afford to pay it. To help combat the horrible policies coming out of Washington, D.C., I will work to help hard-working Wisconsinites keep more of their money.
Boero: We cannot tell the women and girls of Wisconsin that their future health is dependent on a law from 1849. And we cannot expect physicians to risk their career just to provide needed care.
Would you vote to repeal Wisconsin’s ban on abortions, or to add exemptions to the law?
Rozar: I am a pro-life candidate who believes in supporting life from conception to natural death. I authored and co-sponsored, along with Senator Bradley, the Heartbeat Bill last session. While working to protect the lives of the pre-born and supporting the mothers who give birth to those precious babies, I understand the horrible and rare circumstances regarding the victims of rape and incest. I look forward to the discussion regarding those exemptions, along with the life of the mother. I will support all three exemptions with specific language defining what constitutes those exemptions.
Boero: The law needs to be rewritten to reflect the rights to privacy and health inherent in the Roe decision.
Are the public schools in your district properly funded?
Rozar: I hear on a regular basis from school administrators in my district there is not enough funding. I have a responsibility as a rural legislator to communicate the needs of those schools in Madison. I believe in quality education and thank those who teach students. We need to fund that education and make certain parents are involved in the education of their children. The gaps in reading and math are unacceptable and need to continue to be addressed.
Boero: No. School districts had to ask for the largest amount of extra bond funding ever this year. This tells us that the needs outstripped the funding.
How should state government help Wisconsin residents combat the effects of inflation?
Rozar: Helping them keep more of their hard-earned money and being fiscally responsible legislators. We cannot spend more than we have and need to make certain there is accountability on allocated resources.
Boero: We need to focus on Wisconsin industries. Buying local saves money and directly supports our communities.

Relentlessly Tight Labour Market Stifling Business Growth Scottish Business News
Relentlessly Tight Labour Market Stifling Business Growth – Scottish Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/relentlessly-tight-labour-market-stifling-business-growth-scottish-business-news/
FROM THE period of June to August 2022, Scotland’s estimated employment rate rose over the quarter to 75.8 per cent. This is the joint second highest employment rate in the Scottish series with Mar-May 2019 and May-Jul 2017 (all 75.8%). Scotland’s estimated unemployment rate fell over the quarter to 3.3 per cent and the estimated inactivity rate fell to 21.6 per cent over the same period.
The employment rate for women (16-64 years) in Scotland was the highest since the LFS series began in 1992 (74.9%).
Separate HMRC early estimates show 2.43 million payrolled employees in Scotland in September 2022, 41,000 more than in February 2020, prior to the pandemic.
Commenting on the publication of the latest ONS labour market statistics, Employment Minister Richard Lochhead said:
“The Scottish economy and labour market are continuing to show resilience, with the employment level the highest in the series and the rate increasing over the quarter to 75.8 per cent. Additionally, the employment rate for women in Scotland was the highest since the Labour Force Survey estimates were first published in 1992.
“This is despite the serious challenges Scotland is facing as we recover from the pandemic, the ongoing cost crisis impacting businesses and households, the continued impact of Brexit and the economic consequences of Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine all impacting on the economy
“The UK Government’s Brexit policies are continuing to cause labour shortages, which continue to have a negative impact on a range of sectors across Scotland.
“The UK Government holds key powers over migration, visas, VAT, National Insurance and key parts of employment law. I have been calling on the UK Government to establish a joint taskforce with devolved nations to alleviate the pressures that current labour market shortages pose.
“Despite agreeing to engage with the devolved nations on these issues in June, we have received no further response to our request for a joint taskforce. The UK Government must engage with the Scottish Government and use all available powers to address these matters.”
Commenting on the latest ONS Labour Market statistics released today, British Chamber of Commerce Head of Research, David Bharier, said:
“Once again, today’s data confirms that the UK is facing the tightest labour market in years. Our own research shows that labour shortages are holding back the ability of many businesses to service existing customers and grow.
“Despite a further decrease in the number of job vacancies to just under 1.25m, the overall level remains very high. Businesses are currently facing multiple external shocks, from global supply chain disruption, rampant inflation, and rising interest rates. Labour shortages are yet another issue weighing down on business confidence.
“While the unemployment rate of 3.5% stands at the lowest level since 1974, the increasing economic inactivity rate, now standing at 21.7%, should be a cause for concern, with long-term sickness cited by the ONS as a key driver of this. Average weekly earnings also continue to be outstripped by inflation for workers overall.
“If Government is serious about growth, it needs to get serious about jobs. There are key reforms it should adopt to help ease tightness in the labour market. These include supporting greater business investment in workforce training, adopting flexible working practices, expanding the use of apprenticeships, and a comprehensive reform of the Shortage Occupation List to allow sectors facing urgent demand for skills to get what they need.”
