£50 Million To Tackle Health Inequalities Through Research – GOV.UK https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/50-million-to-tackle-health-inequalities-through-research-gov-uk/ 50 million awarded to 13 local authorities across the UK – from Aberdeen to Plymouth – to tackle inequalities and improve the health of the public Part of the government’s commitment to boost growth, level up the health of the nation and empower people to live healthier and longer lives, regardless of their background or where they live People set to benefit from a £50 million research boost to tackle health inequalities in local areas and improve health outcomes across the country. The significant investment, overseen by the National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR), will enable 13 local authorities to set up pioneering Health Determinants Research Collaborations (HDRCs) between with experts and academics to address knowledge gaps in local areas. This will enable new high-quality research into the local challenges affecting people’s health – such as facilitating research to better understand and introduce interventions to help with childhood obesity, Covid recovery, mental wellbeing and drug use. Local authorities up and down the UK are being awarded funding – from Plymouth and London to Newcastle and Aberdeen – to ensure health disparities are being addressed across the board. This forms a key part of the government’s Plan for Patients by supporting people to stay well and within the community, easing pressure on health and care services and enabling people to access the care they need, when they need it. Minister of State for Health, Robert Jenrick, said: The pandemic shone a light on the stark health inequalities that exist across the country – we are committed to levelling up the health of the nation. This funding will drive progress to address health challenges locally, particularly in the places and communities most affected by ill health such as high levels of obesity, drug use and poor mental health. Everyone should be able to live long, healthy lives regardless of their background and where they live, and this new research will help us deliver on our ambition. This is the first time funding for research into health disparities has been given to local authorities for them to lead on innovative new projects within their communities, signalling the government’s commitment to levelling up. Every collaboration will be set up in partnership between universities and local government, capitalising on the world-leading experience and skills of the academic community. This will support the development of better data and evidence to inform local decisions to improve people’s health and reduce variations in healthy life expectance between rich and poor. The funding will also help to stimulate economic growth across the country – particularly in some of the most deprived areas – by creating new jobs within research, as well as identifying local solutions to address some of the key challenges facing our society such as obesity and poor mental wellbeing. Professor Lucy Chappell, NIHR Chief Executive Officer, said: Millions of people living in Britain’s towns, cities and regions face a huge range of public health challenges, made even more acute during the Covid pandemic. Thanks to NIHR this vitally needed research funding will provide a foundation to galvanise local authorities’ capacity and capability to conduct high-quality research. I’m always personally struck by how people working in local government have the added advantage of knowing their local areas and communities. This investment will equip them to embed a lasting legacy of research culture to help local populations take huge steps forward in tackling health inequalities. Professor Brian Ferguson, Director of the NIHR Public Health Research Programme, said: Many people living in communities across the country are facing major challenges that are impacting on their health. Our newly launched HDRCs will serve as nationally recognised centres of excellence, boosting local government’s ability to tackle these challenges by enabling breathing space to become more research active. This is a hugely important step forward in one of NIHR’s key aims to help local government develop research that improves health and wellbeing. By focusing on the wider determinants of health such as employment, housing, education and the physical environment, the areas we are supporting have a tremendous opportunity to make a lasting impact on health inequalities and wider deprivation. Professor Jim McManus, President of the UK Association of Directors of Public Health, said: We know that health inequalities are one of the major barriers facing communities the length and breadth of the country, especially for disadvantaged groups and areas. HDRCs will help drive the research culture within local government, building on the local knowledge that authorities already have and enable what is being done to be more readily researched and evaluated to make a difference to local people. In addition to the research funding, staff working across the health and social care sector will be better equipped to tackle health inequalities from today, following the publication of a new e-learning resource developed by the Office of Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) and Health Education England (HEE). The free-to-access module brings together bite-size learning on what health inequalities are, as well as the actions and interventions that frontline staff, leaders, and commissioners can take to address them in their day-to-day work. It has already been proven to give users a deep understanding of health inequalities and how they can be tackled, helping to improve quality of life while reducing costs to the NHS and benefitting the wider economy. Background Information The HDRCs formally commenced on 1 October 2022, with three of the 13 undertaking additional developmental work to enable HDRC status by 1 October 2023. This funding is from existing funding routes devoted to research. Funded HDRCs: Tower Hamlets Council Newcastle City Council Doncaster Council Aberdeen City Council City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council Plymouth City Council Gateshead Council Blackpool Council Coventry City Council Middlesbrough Council and Redcar & Cleveland Council ** The London Borough of Lambeth Medway Council ** Islington Council ** ** these three areas are receiving development award funding during 2022/23 with a view to them becoming full HDRCs in 2023/24. The Health Disparities and Health Inequalities resource complements the 30 plus existing modules within the All Our Health programme, covering a range of public health topics including Cardiovascular Disease Prevention, Childhood Obesity and Air Pollution. For more information and to access the latest resource in the All Our Health collection, please select the Health Disparities and Health Inequalities session on the All Our Health eLearning page or visit GOV.UK.

Sibos 2022: Is The Metaverse A Journey Or A Destination? – Technology Record https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/sibos-2022-is-the-metaverse-a-journey-or-a-destination-technology-record/ Paul Clarke and Dave Birch considered how the metaverse will impact financial services, and vice versa Dave Birch from 15MB and Paul Clarke from Lateralleap considered the concept of the metaverse and the financial sector’s role in its success at Sibos’s Innovation Tribe stage on 11 October 2022. “The metaverse has an important role in solving complex problems,” said Clarke when introducing the concept to the audience. “It’s about creating digital worlds for a purpose rather than replicating our existing world.” Clarke and Birch established the goal of the metaverse as developing a hyperreality rather than simulating the real world, where business agreements and transactions can be made cost effectively. As such, the two agreed that the financial sector must develop new ways to process money both in and out of the virtual world, as well as between that and reality, with tokenisation as an example. In addition, Birch considered the challenge of digital identity, asking if the role of banks is fundamental to providing a stable infrastructure for the metaverse. Clarke responded, highlighting that banks are a source of fundamental truth, but “entirely new financial services will be possible within the metaverse, too”.   The financial industry is currently considering how to implement new strategies and technologies within the metaverse. “The tide is coming in and fast,” said Clarke. “Imagine that tide is a tsunami; that’s where we’re at with the metaverse. The concept is on a non-linear, exponential journey where we can’t even predict the first round of outcomes.”

Amazfit Launches GTR 4 And GTS 4 Smartwatches With NavIC Support The Indian Express
Amazfit Launches GTR 4 And GTS 4 Smartwatches With NavIC Support – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/amazfit-launches-gtr-4-and-gts-4-smartwatches-with-navic-support-the-indian-express/ Amazfit recently launched the GTR 4 and GTS 4 in India. The newly launched Amazfit GTR 4 and GTS 4 smartwatches are NavIC-compatible, thereby expanding their already lengthy list of known features further. For those unaware, the technology is a homegrown one that allows for greater positional accuracy, and is even said to outperform navigational staples like GPS and GLONASS. It works by using eight indigenous satellites in the sky that cover not just the entire Indian subcontinent but also extend up to 1,500kms beyond India’s borders. Amazfit claims that both its flagship smartwatches are now “capable of GPS tracking that is up to 99 per cent as accurate as hand-held GPS locators in open-air conditions.” This is made possible through circularly-polarised antennae claimed to pick up around 100 per cent of a satellite’s signals vs. the 50% that conventional smartwatches with linearly-polarised antennas do. The increased precision comes in useful while running/hiking in areas where signals may be blocked by trees or large buildings. Considering that NavIC support calls for dedicated hardware in the form of a dual-GNSS module with support for the L5 band, the Amazfit GTR 4 and GTS 4 have always been capable of supporting the technology on the hardware front, right from day one. Funnily, Amazfit failed to specify this in its product pages for both watches. The Amazfit GTR 4 and GTS 4 currently are Amazfit’s most premium offerings in the country, second only to the GTR 3 Pro in price. Both watches support Android and iOS, have Alexa built-in, offer 150+ sports modes, are powered by Zepp OS 2.0, and feature large AMOLED displays. Other cool features include music storage and playback, store cards for simplified shopping, powerful and accurate health technology, and online and offline voice assistants. Both carry the same Rs. 16,999 pricetag and are identical on most fronts, save for the designs and battery capacity. While the Amazfit GTR 4 looks a tad sportier with its rounded dial, the Amazfit GTS 4 is a great buy for fans of rectangular builds. The second differentiating factor is the battery capacity — the GTR 4’s 475 mAh unit makes it capable of running for 14 days on normal usage, while the GTS 4’s 300 mAh lasts up to 8 days on normal usage. © IE Online Media Services Pvt Ltd First published on: 11-10-2022 at 04:06:08 pm

U.S. Not Expecting Any Big Breakthroughs On Debt Issues This Week -Treasury Officials – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-not-expecting-any-big-breakthroughs-on-debt-issues-this-week-treasury-officials-reuters/ U.S. dollar banknotes are displayed in this illustration taken, February 14, 2022. REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration WASHINGTON, Oct 11 (Reuters) – U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen views debt restructuring as a key priority, but senior Treasury officials said they do not expect any major breakthroughs on debt matters at this week’s meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said on Monday she hoped debt restructuring efforts for Zambia and Chad could be completed by the end of the year, which she said would pave the way for more countries to seek help. The Group of 20 nations launched its Common Framework for debt relief in late 2020 together with the Paris Club to aid low-income countries, but it has failed to produce even one debt restructuring deal thus far, even though some 60% of those countries are in or near debt distress. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Yellen last week singled out China, the biggest creditor to many African countries, for dragging its heels, and said it was crucial for all the world’s major bilateral creditors to participate meaningfully in restructuring efforts. “To date, China has delayed providing debt treatments to borrowers in debt distress or has provided treatments that fall short of restoring the borrower’s debt sustainability,” she said in a speech at the Center for Global Development. China last month denied any foot-dragging in the case of Zambia’s debt, saying it has played a “positive role” in its restructuring. A U.S. Treasury official told reporters there had been some incremental progress in the cases of Chad and Zambia, but agreements were unlikely in the next couple of days. China was also still blocking calls to expand the G20 debt reduction initiative to include middle income countries, the official said, but progress on individual cases was possible. Aiding Sri Lanka, one of the most urgent such cases, would require a process with key creditors outside of the G20 framework, the Treasury official said. Yellen, who last week warned that some countries would need “considerable debt relief,” would discuss the issue with her counterparts during the week, a second Treasury official said. The Zambian government told investors on Friday it hoped it would agree debt relief terms with official creditors by the end of the year or early 2023. Zambia was the first African country to default in the COVID-19 era as it struggled with debt that reached 133% of GDP at the end of 2021. Chad’s creditors are also close to reaching a debt relief agreement, a French Finance Ministry source said on Monday. Can You Get A Tax Exemption For Travelling? CNBCTV18
Can You Get A Tax Exemption For Travelling? – CNBCTV18 https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/can-you-get-a-tax-exemption-for-travelling-cnbctv18/ Mini The LTA is only applicable if an employee takes planned leave from work and travels during the period of leave. Travelling during public holidays is not considered for LTA reimbursement Are you aware of the component of Leave Travel Allowance (LTA) for employees, that covers your travel expenses? Do you know that the component is already part of your salary and you are eligible to use it for your travels? Read on to find out all about LTA and tweak your upcoming travel plans accordingly. What is the allowance for? Leave Travel Allowance is a component that has to be included by employers in their employees’ annual CTC, as a best practice, to enable people of the working class to enjoy vacations with their families. This allowance does not come under the total taxable income, which means that the employee need not pay tax for receiving LTA. As evident from the name itself, LTA covers only the travel expenditure involved, and not expenses related to staying, food, shopping, short travels within the vacation destination or international travel. LTA can only be claimed for travels made within India. Who is eligible? If you are a salaried employee and your offer letter contains the LTA component, you are eligible for the allowance. There is no waiting period for the LTA, the eligibility begins on the first day of employment. It can cover the actual travel expenses of you, your spouse and your immediate family (parents, in-laws and two children if they are born after 1 October 1998.) After the trip, you can submit bills of travel collectively, for all persons who travelled, to your admin/finance department, for reimbursement, subject to your salary slab. No amount will be credited to you in advance. What routes and transport can I take? You are eligible for reimbursement only for the travel fare between your starting point (origin) and your farthest destination in the trip. Stops or reroutes in between will not be considered. The first preference is for you to travel by first-class AC train or by air. If a railway connection is available for a portion of the route or is unavailable, the employer would consider the fare equivalent to that of an established transport medium (first class AC, or deluxe bus, whichever is appropriate to the route.) for reimbursement. When can I avail of LTA? An employee can avail of LTA twice in 4 years (a block year). The latest block year was 2018-2021, and the current block year is 2022-2025. If you fail to avail of LTA in the last two years of the block year, you can avail of the allowance in the succeeding block, subject to terms and conditions. LTA cannot be availed for a yearly vacation. Can I travel during public holidays and claim LTA? The LTA is only applicable if an employee takes planned leave from work and travels during the period of leave. Travelling during public holidays is not considered for LTA reimbursement, however, some companies make the exemption. How to claim LTA? After the travel, the employee is required to submit all bills relating to travel to the HR/Admin department of the company, after considering your eligibility, the HR approves and sends it to finance, after which they proceed with your reimbursement. As much as these foods are heart-filling and hard two resist, they can cause severe bowel issues and other issues such as acid reflux. To avoid these energy-consuming health issues, it is essential to take the right preventive measures. Besides working out and eating in controlled portions, make sure to also add these foods to your diet. These foods will help ensure constipation and other digestion issues stay at bay as you enjoy scrumptious festive foods this season. These 6 foods ensure better digestion while you indulge in unhealthy festive foods this year-end: 1. Kiwi Kiwis are believed to help prevent constipation in addition to their fibre content. Another theory suggests that actinidin, an enzyme, is in charge of kiwi’s beneficial effects on bowel habits and gut motility. You may consume raw kiwis. Simply remove the green meat and seeds by peeling or halving the fruit. They go well with fruit salads and can be included to increase the fibre content of smoothies. 2. Apples Apples contain a lot of fibre. Apples contain soluble fibre, mostly in the form of a dietary fibre known as pectin, even though the majority of that fibre is insoluble. Pectin is quickly digested by bacteria in the stomach to create short-chain fatty acids, which have the ability to draw water into the colon. It may also help reduce cravings for weeks during this season. 3. Sweet potato A rich source of fibre is found in sweet potatoes, which can aid with constipation. Most of the fibre in sweet potatoes is insoluble and comes in the form of cellulose and lignin. Pectin, a soluble fibre, is also present. By making stools heavier and more voluminous, insoluble fibre can help with bowel motions. It can also be used as an alternative to regular potatoes that are used in many festive recipes. 4. Chia seeds One of the foods with the highest fibre content is chia seeds. Chia transforms into a gel when it comes into touch with water. This may aid in digestion by softening faeces and facilitating their passage. Furthermore, chia seeds may absorb up to 12 times their own weight in water, which can assist give stools greater thickness and weight. Chia seeds are incredibly adaptable and may be used to significantly increase the fibre content of many dishes with little to no effort. Consume warm water each morning during this season of festivities. 5. Citrus fruits Pectin, a soluble fibre found in citrus fruits, is particularly abundant in the fruit’s peel. Pectin can shorten the duration of intestinal transit and ease constipation. Citrus fruits also contain a flavanol called naringenin, which may help explain how well they treat constipation. You can incorporate limes, lemons, oranges, etc. into your daily diet this festive season. 6. Cruciferous vegetables In addition to being high in fibre, vegetables like spinach, broccoli, and Cauliflower are also excellent providers of folate and the vitamins C and K. These vegetable aid in giving stools weight and volume, which facilitates bowel movement. Try using spinach in a quiche, pie, or soup to add more of it to your diet. To increase the fibre content of salads or sandwiches, raw baby spinach or small greens can be used. They can be roasted, grilled, boiled, steamed, or steam-cooked and eaten warm or cold. These foods can incorporate into your festive indulgence and can help you maintain your weight as well as prevent constipation. Latest Crypto News – The Most Innovative Features – Decentraland, Polygon, And Big Eyes Coin? – NewsWatch https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/latest-crypto-news-the-most-innovative-features-decentraland-polygon-and-big-eyes-coin-newswatch/ The cryptocurrency market is known for rapid changes. Trends occur quickly, and improvements are always welcome in the ecosystem. Constant trend changes are responsible for driving progress in the market. As traders are constantly looking for the next new thing to buy and hold, there’s a tendency for innovative crypto solutions to thrive. These projects usually introduce new use cases or technology to the crypto space. Are you looking for innovative crypto projects to buy and hold for potential gains? This piece has information on everything you need to know. Expanding The Metaverse With Decentraland There are only a few projects that are currently as innovative as Decentraland. This cryptocurrency focuses on offering users access to a virtual world known as the metaverse. Many people have been given rave reviews about the metaverse, and how it is a virtual representation of human society. That’s why many people want to be a part of it. Decentraland is an Ethereum-based platform that lets users purchase pieces of land in the virtual universe. The digital land on Decentraland is designated as LAND. MANA is the coin that’s spent on Decentraland. Traders use MANA to purchase virtual land and other in-game items. One of the unique things about Decentraland is that it allows users to enjoy a custom experience. For instance, you can have a shopping mall where you’ll meet your friends or a business meeting place with your friends. Decentraland is not the only project that’s experimenting with the virtual universe. However, this project stands out in the aspect of ownership. The Decentraland DAO offers a truly decentralized system. Users will stay in control of the experiences and content on the platform. The control extends even to the transaction fees you’ll charge other users for using your content. Many traders prefer Decentraland to other metaverse-based platforms because it does not involve hidden fees, charges, or commissions. A Worthy Solution – Polygon Another innovative project in the cryptocurrency ecosystem is Polygon. While Polygon is a decentralized network, it’s different from others because it’s a layer-2 protocol. As a layer-2 protocol, Polygon helps its main chain (Ethereum) to process transactions faster. When developers realized Ethereum had become slower, they searched for a solution. While they could have opted to create a completely new blockchain, they opted for a solution to spread the computational load – Polygon. So, how does Polygon help Ethereum run faster and cheaper? Polygon is hosted on the Ethereum blockchain. It increases the flexibility, scalability, and sovereignty of Ethereum. However, it ensures that users can enjoy the benefits of Ethereum. MATIC is the currency that powers the Polygon protocol. However, MATIC is an ERC-20 token. This means that users can also use the token on Ethereum’s blockchain. Another interesting thing to note about Polygon is that the decentralized protocol is designed to run on a proof-of-stake mechanism. This means that users will stake their digital assets to secure the transactions that occur on the platform. Stakers will be rewarded with MATIC tokens. Cool Cats And Kittens Listen Up – Big Eyes Coin (BIG)  Arrives Only a few meme coins in the crypto space have been able to make a lasting impression on the coin market. Big Eyes Coin (BIG) has plans to be among the notable meme coins in the coin market. According to the developers of this project, Big Eyes Coin (BIG) plans to be one of the biggest cryptocurrencies on the market by 2030. Big Eyes will ensure that it stays relevant in the crypto space by supporting the minting of NFTs. It’ll also use a community-driven approach to support consistent growth and policy development. There’ll be a total supply of 200 billion BIG tokens. Big Eyes Coin (BIG) is currently in the fourth stage of its presale, and you can join it by clicking this link. Researchers Create Map Of Milky Ways Graveyard Of Dead Stars The Indian Express
Researchers Create Map Of Milky Way’s Graveyard Of Dead Stars – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/researchers-create-map-of-milky-ways-graveyard-of-dead-stars-the-indian-express/ Researchers have created a chart of the corpses of massive stars that have since collapsed into black holes and neutron stars. The study reveals that this “galactic graveyard” stretches three times the height of the Milky Way and that close to one-third of the objects have been flung out from the galaxy. “These compact remnants of dead stars show a fundamentally different distribution and structure to the visible galaxy,” said David Sweeney, a PhD student at the Sydney Institute for Astronomy of the University of Sydney, and lead author of the paper in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, in a press statement. “The ‘height’ of the galactic underworld is over three times larger in the Milky Way itself. And an amazing 30 per cent of objects have been completely ejected from the galaxy,” added Sweeney. Black holes and neutron stars are formed when stars which are more than eight times larger than our Sun exhaust their fuel supply and suddenly collapse. When this happens, it triggers a reaction that blows apart the outer portion of the star in a supernova explosion. Meanwhile, the core keeps compressing itself until it becomes either a neutron star or a black hole, depending on its starting mass. Neutron stars have cores so dense that electrons and protons combine at the subatomic level to form neutrons. This squeezes its total mass into a sphere that is “smaller than a city.” If the starting mass of the star is more than 25 times that of our Sun, this collapse will continue until the core gets so dense that even light cannot escape, creating a black hole. Both kinds of stellar remnants warp space, time and matter around them due to their density. The researchers carefully recreated the full lifecycle of these ancient star corpses to construct the first detailed map of the “galactic underworld” where they lie. A rendition of the Milky Way Galaxy (top), compared with its galactic graveyard. (bottom) (Image credit: Sydney University) “One of the problems for finding these ancient objects is that, until now, we had no idea where to look. The oldest neutron stars and black holes were created when the galaxy was younger and shaped differently and then subjected to complex changes spanning billions of years. It has been a major task to model all of this to find them,” said Sydney Institute for Astronomy’s Professor Peter Tuthill in a press statement. Tuthill is a co-author of the paper. According to the researchers, newly-formed neutron stars and black holes stay conforming to today’s galaxy, letting astronomers know where to look. But the oldest neutron stars and black holes are like “ghosts still haunting a house demolished long ago.” “The hardest problem I had to solve in hunting down their true distribution was to account for the ‘kicks’ they receive in the violent moments of their creation. Supernova explosions are asymmetric, and the remnants are ejected at high speed – up to millions of kilometres per hour – and, even worse, this happens in an unknown and random direction for every object,” explained Sweeney. Point-cloud chart of the Milky Way (top) and its ‘galactic underworld’. (Image credit: Sydney University In order to find out the location of these dead stars, the researchers had to look deep into the depths of cosmic time and use complex models to reconstruct how they behaved over billions of years. The researchers compared it to a snooker table, where you might be able to find out where a ball went based on how hard it was hit and how it was hit. The University of Sydney researchers collaborated with Monash University researchers to build intricate models that encoded where the stars were born, where they met their end and how they were eventually dispersed as our galaxy evolved.

Week seven – Adkins and Miami Northwestern were blown out, 42-7, by Miami Central and U of L commitments Stanquan Clark and Catuarus Hicks. 2023 OT Luke Burgess (Photo: Mick Walker, 247Sports) New Palestine, Ind., standout Luke Burgess became the first offensive lineman commitment in the class when he gave a verbal in late June. The 6-foot-7.5, 295-pound Burgess had been one of the top targets for the Cardinals for several months. “I think what made Louisville the right fit for me was the coaching staff and university itself was the two biggest things it came down to as well as the city of Louisville,” Burgess told 247Sports. “I feel it was a great fit for me as well as the coaching and coaching staff how they present themselves, I felt like it was the perfect situation for me to grow.” Burgess chose Louisville over a host of scholarship offers, including Miami, Boston College, Cincinnati, Iowa, Iowa State, Michigan State, Oregon, and Tennessee. A 247Sports Composite three-star, Brown checks in as the No. 425 nationally overall and the No. 35 offensive tackle. Week one – New Palestine won 42-28 over Westfield as the offense rushed for 299 yards, including six yards a carry. Week two – New Palestine decked Decatur Central 49-0 and rushed for 261 yards and four TDs, averaging 11.3 yards a carry. Week three – New Palestine is averaging 244.5 yards a game on the ground and rolled 50-13 at Yorktown to go 3-0. Week four – Burgess helped the offense run for 224 yards – 6.8 yards a carry – in a 42-6 win over Mt. Vernon. Week five – New Palestine amassed 470 total yards in a 42-14 win over Pendleton Heights. Week six – Burgess and New Palestine are still undefeated after a 42-7 win over Greenfield-Central. The Dragons amassed 433 yards of offense. Week seven – Burgess and New Palestine stayed undefeated, amassing 486 yards of total offense in a 56-0 win over Shelbyville. Week eight – Another week and another huge offensive game. New Palestine averaged 7.1 yards rushing and had five TDs on the ground on a 63-12 win over New Castle. New Palestine is undefeated heading into the final week of the regular-season. (Photo: 247Sports) Miami, Fla., four-star linebacker Stanquan Clark became the seventh four-star commitment in the class when he announced on Aug. 14. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Clark had said he wanted to make a decision prior to his senior season. He picked U of L over finalists Auburn, NC State, Kentucky, Miami, Michigan, Rutgers, and FAU. Clark played his junior season at Miami Killian where he totaled 131 tackles (24 for loss), four sacks, and two interceptions. Clark was named “Alpha Dog” of the 10-team Palm Beach Gardens Jamboree back in May and has since transferred into Miami Central where he will wrap up his prep career. 247Sports recruiting analyst Andrew Ivins provided a scouting report on Clark’s junior season. “The type of defender that has a knack for just making plays, and at key moments, whether that be an interception on third down or a forced fumble when opponents are driving. Lined up primarily as an inside ‘backer in a 4-3 front as a junior at Miami Killian and spent most Friday nights simply crashing the A and B gaps. Will need to eventually improve tackling technique, and must learn how to take down college-sized ball carriers, but has a bit of a mean streak to him, and isn’t afraid to lower the shoulder pads and deliver a blow. Tends to freelance, but has flashed the ability to read and diagnose, which is promising.” A 247Sports Composite four-star, Clark checks in as the No. 321 nationally overall and the No. 26 linebacker. Week one – Miami Central went on the road and beat then No. 4 ranked IMG Academy 20-14 and Clark had nine tackles. Week two – Miami Central had an open week. Week three – In a matchup of state powers, Miami Central dominated Booker T. Washington 36-19. Clark had eight tackles, two sacks, and two tackles for a loss. Week four – Miami Central and Clark whipped Carol City 34-0 on Thursday and he then made a visit to Louisville on Friday. Week five – Miami Central is now 4-0 after a 43-7 win over Dillard with Clark coming up with eight tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, and two tackles for a loss. Week six – Clark had two tackles, including one tackle for a loss, to help Miami Central to a 5-0 record and a shutout – a 41-0 blowout of North Miami Beach. Week seven – Clark had 11 tackles as Miami Central decked Miami Northwestern 42-7. He is averaging around seven tackles a game. (Photo: Blair Angulo, 247Sports) Four-star Bellflower, Calif., St. John Bosco quarterback Pierce Clarkson has been the MVP of the class to this point. Clarkson was the second commitment in the class when he announced on Jan. 28 and has since been very active in attracting others to join him in the Louisville recruiting class. “I love the Louisville football program itself,” Clarkson told 247Sports analyst Greg Biggins. “I see a lot of opportunities for them to turn things around pretty quickly. I plan on bringing in a pretty special 2023 recruiting class with me. You’ll see, you’ll see.” Clarkson picked U of L over a host of scholarships, including Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Michigan State, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Ole Miss, Indiana, Purdue, Kentucky, Virginia Tech, and others. As a junior, Clarkson split time at QB with Michigan State freshman Katin Houser. He completed 71 of 118 passes for 1,416 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also ran 38 times for 254 yards and four TDs for a 10-2 team that lost in the state playoffs to Anaheim, Calif., Servite. A 247Sports Composite four-star, Clarkson checks in as the No. 208 nationally overall and the No. 14 quarterback. Week one – Clarkson completed 9 of 19 passes for 156 yards and three touchdowns and ran eight times for 62 yards and one TD as St. John Bosco decked Allen, Tx., 52-14. Week two – Clarkson completed 8 of 14 passes for 158 yards and 1 TD, while also rushing two times for 37 yards and 1 TD in a 42-7 blowout at Bishop Amat. Week three – Clarkson completed  9 of 9 passes for 183 yards and two TDs in a 49-0 blowout of Portland, Ore., Central Catholic. Week four – Clarkson completed 10 of 15 passes for 90 yards and one TD, while also throwing one...

German Tourism Industry Leaps Into The Digital Age Hindustan Times
German Tourism Industry Leaps Into The Digital Age – Hindustan Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/german-tourism-industry-leaps-into-the-digital-age-hindustan-times/ In this day and age, planning and booking a holiday on the internet has become the norm. So is trawling social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube for vacation inspiration. As a result, to stay competitive, travel companies and hotel chains must keep up with the digital age and ensure prospective holidaymakers can find and book their offerings online. The German tourism industry, however, has been slow to embrace the digital solutions. When the COVID pandemic hit, however, many were left with no choice but to go digital. Pandemic kick-starts digitization When pandemic-related travel restrictions made it difficult to travel abroad in 2020 and 2021, many Germans opted to spend their vacations within Germany. During the warmer months, German beaches were packed with holidaymakers, and many campsites and hotels were booked out for weeks. On top of that, many companies working in the tourist sector began advertising their services online. “The coronavirus pandemic forced and convinced small companies in particular to embrace digitization,” a spokesperson for the Federal Association of the German Tourism Industry (BTW) tells DW. (Also Read: China holiday tourist trips fall 18% over the week-long National Day holiday) Hotels and restaurants introduced a spate of innovations, such as virtual menus, online reservation and booking systems, as well as contact-less check-in options. A 2021 survey by the German Tourism Association (DTV) found that 84% of businesses said the pandemic had spurred digital transformation in the industry. Tourists visiting Germany’s East Frisian Islands can now, for example, use a special app to check-in and out of hotels, or book restaurant tables. Guests wishing to book and pay for a beach chair along Germany’s popular North Sea or Baltic Sea coast can do so online. And vacationers heading for spa towns can now buy virtual visitors’ cards, entitling them various discounts and free beach access. While progress has been made in some areas, Germany still lags behinds in others. Take cashless payments, for instance. While card payments are widely accepted in Denmark, Poland and Lithuania, many German businesses still run on cash. When out and about in rural Germany, you are also likely experience poor phone reception, slow internet, and a dearth of public wifi. Travelling back in time Overall, however, Germany’s tourism sector seems to have awoken from its analog slumber and is embracing the digital age. Almost overnight, many business have begun advertising their services online, investing in mobile-first and social media platforms, and using Instagram as a marketing tool. Some are even developing new gadgets and technologies to pull in new clients. City marketing agencies in Munich, Bamberg and Wolfenbuttel, for instance, now offer virtual tours to attract prospective tourists. The city of Essen, in Germany’s far-west, began running hybrid tours that combine virtual and analog elements in 2021. Visitors don virtual reality goggles, which track their GPS location, showing them what Essen city life was like in the late 19th century. Other companies offer similar history tours of Cologne. Sign up with TimeRide Go!, and you can experience certain parts of Cologne as they were decades ago thanks to special virtual reality glasses. Airbnb, the popular accommodation platform, also offers virtual cooking classes, and online-only tours of famous landmarks, such as India’s iconic Taj Mahal palace. Travel agencies are also letting clients explore potential holiday destinations with virtual reality goggles. All this helps attract and retain customers. Managing visitor flows Traveling around Germany has become much easier in recent years thanks to new digital technologies. Some are applied to better manage visitor flows and avoid overcrowding of roads, tourist attractions, beaches and so forth. When masses of German holidaymakers streamed to the North Sea coast in the summer of 2020 and 2021, crowding beaches, authorities found themselves worrying about how to ensure social distancing to prevent the spread of COVID-19. They then tasked a marketing agency with developing a virtual traffic light system indicating how many people are frequenting local beaches at any given time. Laser sensors register the number of beachgoers and vehicles in an area, then translate this information into a simple, color-coded traffic light heuristic accessible online and displayed on local monitors. This way, people at home, and nearby, can pick less frequented beaches to avoid overcrowding. Challenges remain Germany’s Hotel and Restaurant Association (DEHOGA) says some business still, however, have a hard time integrating digital technologies into their existing infrastructure. Two reasons explain this sluggish uptake, according to industry association DTV: A lack of funds and pronounced staff-shortages. The latter has meant that companies lack employees with the necessary expertise to oversee such changes. That said, not all services could or should be shifted online. The tourist trade is built, after all, on interpersonal encounters, hospitality, brick-and-mortar hotels and restaurants, great food and friendly smiles. After all, this is what holidays are really all about.

Four Destructive Habits That Are Slowly Killing You SciTechDaily
Four Destructive Habits That Are Slowly Killing You SciTechDaily
Four Destructive Habits That Are Slowly Killing You – SciTechDaily https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/four-destructive-habits-that-are-slowly-killing-you-scitechdaily/ Habits are a double-edged sword. Healthy habits can change your body, mind, and general life trajectory for the better. They’re profoundly beneficial and transformative. Unfortunately, unhealthy habits can ruin your health and overall longevity. Worse still, you might be engaging in these habits daily without realizing just how dangerous they are. Here’s a list of four everyday habits that can turn deadly if left unchecked. Poor Sleep Poor sleep quality and chronic sleep deprivation can disastrously affect your physical and neurological well-being. Several studies have shown that middle-aged persons who get six or fewer hours of sleep per night are 30% more likely to suffer from dementia (Bryant, 2021). Likewise, scientists have linked inadequate sleep to a laundry list of health issues, including high blood pressure, heart disease, depression, and anxiety. If living a long, healthful life is your priority, don’t skip out on a good night’s rest. Not Exercising The benefits of cardiovascular and strength training are challenging to ignore. Yet millions worldwide continue living largely sedentary lifestyles that are slowly killing them. A lack of exercise can increase the likelihood of heart disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes (CDC, 2022). Cardiovascular activities like cycling, jogging, and swimming can go a long way in preventing such diseases. Resistance training exercises like weightlifting are essential, too. Recent studies have shown that an hour of strength training per week can lead to a 15% risk reduction in all-cause mortality (Momma et al., 2022). Resistance training can also help you mitigate the risk of serious injury, especially in your senior years. Exercise is a cornerstone of healthy living and remaining injury-free in your later years, so remember to stay active. Neglecting Sun Protection There is nothing wrong with enjoying a little sun during the year’s warmer seasons. Sun exposure is critical for regulating several bodily functions, including circadian rhythms, energy levels, and vitamin D absorption. With that said, too much of anything is harmful, and the results can be deadly in the case of sun exposure. One of the most common causes of squamous cell and melanoma skin cancers is overexposure to UV radiation from the sun. In Canada alone, around 80,000 people are diagnosed each year with skin cancer, and a whopping eighty to ninety percent of those cases are linked to UV exposure (Sander et al., 2020). The solution is simple: sunscreen. Studies have shown that routine sunscreen use can significantly decrease cancer rates among most age demographics (Sander et al., 2020). A sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection and an SPF of at least thirty will keep your skin healthy, youthful, and cancer-free. Vaping The last item on the list might seem obvious, but vaping rates continue to rise yearly. Since 2011, the global number of e-cigarette users has soared from 7 million to 41 million in 2018 (SingleCare, 2022). Although not as dangerous as cigarettes, research has shown an increased risk of chronic lung disease and asthma among frequent vape users (Blaha, 2022). The vaping industry is also less regulated than traditional tobacco products leading to the use of chemicals with unknown risks in the production process. Lastly, vaping does not help reduce nicotine addiction. If anything, nicotine use has soared amongst younger demographics since the introduction of e-cigarette products into the mainstream. In a 2021 U.S. National Youth Tobacco Survey, over two million middle and high school students reported frequent e-cigarette use (Blaha, 2022). Traditional cessation methods, including nicotine replacement therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, are far healthier options than vaping. Final Thoughts If you struggle with any of the abovementioned habits, remember to be patient with yourself. Breaking habits takes time, but with enough consistency, you’ll be able to put these nasty habits behind you and live a healthier and more fulfilling lifestyle. Teachers Call For End To Mandatory Retention Policy Warren Tribune Chronicle
Teachers Call For End To Mandatory Retention Policy Warren Tribune Chronicle
Teachers Call For End To Mandatory Retention Policy – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/teachers-call-for-end-to-mandatory-retention-policy-warren-tribune-chronicle/ A Campbell teacher joined the Ohio Education Association on Monday to urge the Ohio Senate to pass a bill that would eliminate a requirement that third-graders be held back a grade if they do not hit a certain score on a standardized reading test. Since the 2013-14 school year, third-grade students have taken a standardized test each spring and the score they get determines if they will continue to fourth grade, or be retained in third grade. House Bill 497 would change that, so students still would take the test, but parents would work with their child’s teacher to decide if retention is best for that student. It has been approved by the Ohio House, but not the Ohio Senate. OEA President Scott DiMauro said this is a one-size-fits-all approach that data shows does not benefit students and has not been an effective approach to raising reading scores. One local teacher has seen how this negatively affects students firsthand. Karen Carney, a fourth-grade teacher at Campbell Elementary School, said being retained is devastating to a child’s self-esteem and compared it to wearing a scarlet letter around school. In her many years of teaching, she has taught students in first through fourth grade. “Unfortunately, that third grade reading guarantee and that retention piece that goes with it is something that has just caused nightmares all around,” Carney said. “My first year in third grade, I overheard two little girls taking about, ‘oh my gosh did you hear that if we don’t pass this test, they won’t let us go to fourth grade?’ No 8- or 9-year-old should have to go through anything as stressful as that. School should be a place where you feel safe — where you feel people are your cheerleaders — and that’s exactly what we do here. That was an incident that completely broke my heart.” Since the mandatory retention policy began in Ohio, Ohio State Board of Education member Christina Collins said an average of 3,628 students are retained per year. Of those, only 8 percent hit a proficient mark in reading in fourth grade. She also said this policy disproportionately affects minority and disadvantaged students. Of those students who are retained each year, 48 percent are black, 31 percent are white and 92 percent are economically disadvantaged. “In the business world, such minimal return on investment would be considered a failure,” Collins said. The featured speakers agreed that retention is sometimes necessary, but that decision should be between those who know students best, their teachers and parents, not a score they earned one time. Carney pointed out that some students have anxiety and are bad test-takers, so the score they earn on one day at one time may not be reflective of their actual abilities. The House bill is co-sponsored by Gayle Manning, R-North Ridgeville, and Phillip Robinson Jr., D-Solon. It was passed by the house June 1 by a vote of 82-10, then introduced into the Senate on June 8. Manning said she originally voted for the legislation that instated the mandatory retention policy, but since then, she has seen how it has hurt students. “Ending mandatory retention has broad bipartisan support because it’s the right thing to do for kids,” Manning said. “These decisions should be made by parents and educators, not dictated by a score on a test.” The Senate will take up the legislation when it returns to session later this fall. Bitcoin (BTC) And Ethereum (ETH) Are Joined By Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) As Major Profits Are About To Be Made – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-btc-and-ethereum-eth-are-joined-by-snowfallprotocol-io-snw-as-major-profits-are-about-to-be-made-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The text below is an advertorial article that is not part of Cryptonews.com editorial content. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are two of the biggest cryptocurrencies in the world. They have both seen major price increases over the years, and it looks like that trend is about to continue. But these cryptocurrencies aren’t the only ones making moves in the cryptocurrency world. Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) is a new token that is set to explode in value in the coming weeks. If you’re looking to make some major profits, then you need to get into (SNW) now!  BUY TOKENS Why Bitcoin (BTC) Holders Are Set To Make Major Profits As the number one cryptocurrency in the world, Bitcoin (BTC) is always going to be in the spotlight. And Bitcoin (BTC) holders are about to get a major windfall thanks to Snowfall Protocol (SNW), which we will explain later on in this article. Bitcoin (BTC) has been adopted as a legal tender in nation-states. This means that Bitcoin (BTC) can now be used to pay taxes, fees, and other charges. In addition, as more and more businesses start to accept this monetary system, the value of Bitcoin (BTC) will continue to rise. It’s only a matter of time before Bitcoin (BTC) becomes the global currency. Why Ethereum (ETH) Holders Are Set To Make Major Profits When it comes to smart contract applications, Ethereum (ETH) is the clear leader. Ethereum (ETH) has been used to create some of the most popular decentralized applications (DApps) in the world. And as more people start to use these DApps, the demand for Ethereum (ETH) will continue to rise. Ethereum (ETH) holders are set to make massive gains as the price of this crypto continues to provide use cases within the blockchain industry. After the recent merger, continued progress seems like the most likely outcome and as more and more people become familiar with blockchain capabilities, this cryptocurrency will be in demand, which will help to increase the price per coin. Why Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) Holders Are Set To Make Major Profits Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) is not as well known as the other two cryptocurrencies mentioned in this article, however, it is quickly gaining popularity in the cryptocurrency world.  Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) is a new token that is based on multi-chain capabilities which means digital assets such as stablecoins, NFTs, and cryptocurrencies can be effortlessly swapped across different blockchains. This makes Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) a very versatile token and one that is set to explode in value in the coming weeks. If you’re looking for the highest profit potential, Snowfallprotocol.io’s (SNW) token is set to lead the way compared to Ethereum (ETH) and Bitcoin (BTC) because as a relatively newer innovation within the blockchain industry, it has not reached its full potential value yet. Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) have both seen price increases of over 100% in the past few years, and Snowfallprotocol.io’s (SNW) token is set to follow suit with even bigger gains. So if you’re looking to make some major profits from cryptocurrency, then you need to get into Snowfallprotocol.io (SNW) now. The other two cryptocurrencies are considered blue chip investments, but Snowfallprotocol.io’s (SNW) token is the true dark horse that is set to take the crypto world by storm. Hong Kong Nixes US Sanctions On Russian-Owned Superyacht KY3
Hong Kong Nixes US Sanctions On Russian-Owned Superyacht KY3
Hong Kong Nixes US Sanctions On Russian-Owned Superyacht – KY3 https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/hong-kong-nixes-us-sanctions-on-russian-owned-superyacht-ky3/ HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s leader John Lee said Tuesday he will only implement United Nations sanctions, after the U.S. warned the territory’s status as a financial center could be affected if it acts as a safe haven for sanctioned individuals. Lee’s statement Tuesday came days after a luxury yacht connected to Russian tycoon Alexey Mordashov docked in the city. Mordashov, who is believed to have close ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the U.S., U.K. and the European Union in February after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Hong Kong authorities have said that they do not implement unilateral sanctions imposed by other governments. “We cannot do anything that has no legal basis,” Lee told reporters. “We will comply with United Nations sanctions, that is our system, that is our rule of law,” he said. A U.S. State Department spokesperson said in a statement Monday that “the possible use of Hong Kong as a safe haven by individuals evading sanctions from multiple jurisdictions further calls into question the transparency of the business environment.” The State Department spokesperson also said the city’s reputation as a financial center “depends on its adherence to international laws and standards” and that U.S. companies “increasingly view Hong Kong’s business environment with wariness” due to an erosion of Hong Kong’s once high degree of autonomy and its freedoms. The $500-million superyacht Nord, allegedly owned by Mordashov, moored in Hong Kong’s harbor on Wednesday following a weeklong journey from the Russian city of Vladivostok. Mordashov is one of Russia’s richest men, with an estimated wealth of about $18 billion. He also is the main shareholder and chairman of Severstal, Russia’s largest steel and mining company. Mordashov has tried to challenge the sanctions against him in European courts. U.S. and European authorities have seized over a dozen yachts belonging to sanctioned Russian tycoons to prevent them from sailing to other ports that are not affected by the sanctions. So Russian oligarchs have begun docking their yachts at ports in places like Turkey, which has maintained diplomatic ties with Russia since the war began. The Nord measures 141.6 meters (464.6 feet), has two helipads, a swimming pool and 20 cabins. It is operating under a Russian flag. Beijing sets foreign policy for Hong Kong and has demurred from participating in sanctions against Russia for its attack on Ukraine. Britain handed control over its colony Hong Kong to China in 1997, promising to respect its semi-autonomous status as a separate economic and customs territory. The semi-autonomous city’s status as an international business hub and financial center has suffered in recent years after Beijing imposed a tough national security law on the city, aimed primarily at stamping out dissent following months of antigovernment protests in 2019. Critics say the security law, which in certain cases allows for suspects to be transferred to mainland China for trial in its opaque legal system, could threaten Hong Kong’s rule of law. Following passage of the law in 2020, the United States sanctioned Lee, then Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam and other Hong Kong and mainland Chinese government officials, for “undermining Hong Kong’s autonomy and restricting the freedom of expression or assembly.” Lee blasted the ban on personal and official travel to the U.S. and access to the American financial system. He was responding to a question of whether he is paid in cash, as was the case for Lam, who was also placed under U.S. sanctions that limit the ability of those designated for such penalties to transfer funds across national boundaries or convert them into different currencies. “The second thing about the so-called sanction imposed on people in Hong Kong without justification, it is a very barbaric act, and I’m not going to comment on the effect of such barbaric act, because officials in Hong Kong do what is right to protect the interests of the country, and the interests of Hong Kong, so we will just laugh off the so-called sanctions,” Lee said. Wildfires Affecting Air Quality Causing Moderate To Unhealthy Conditions KIRO Seattle
Wildfires Affecting Air Quality, Causing Moderate To Unhealthy Conditions – KIRO Seattle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/wildfires-affecting-air-quality-causing-moderate-to-unhealthy-conditions-kiro-seattle/ Wildfires burning in Washington are affecting the air quality, which has been moderate to unhealthy in many areas. The Washington State Department of Natural Resources reported on Monday that there were six large wildfires while 12 have been reported since Sunday. KIRO 7′s Gary Horcher pulled up the Department of Ecology’s smoke forecast page, and it showed mostly yellow, or moderate smoke, in our region. That trend is expected to grow and continue into Wednesday and Thursday while some east of the mountains could experience hazardous conditions. On Sunday, the Nakia Creek Fire near Larch Mountain in Clark County started and has grown to nearly 250 acres. It has been putting off a lot of smoke and is 0% contained. The Bolt Creek Fire, which has been burning since Sept. 10 and has grown to nearly 20 square miles, is 36% contained. There is still a risk of burned and undermined trees tumbling onto U.S. Highway 2 due to that fire. The highway was closed Monday afternoon so crews could remove a tree that had fallen across the road, but it was reopened before 7 p.m. For more information on the air quality in your area, visit the Washington Smoke Information Blog, Washington Air Monitoring Network or Puget Sound Clean Air Agency. ©2022 Cox Media Group

NIU Jazz Orchestra And Jazz Ensemble ‘travel’ The World Through Music – Northern Star Online https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/niu-jazz-orchestra-and-jazz-ensemble-travel-the-world-through-music-northern-star-online/ By Nick Glover, Lifestyle Writer|October 10, 2022 Madelaine Vikse NIU Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble hosted their first concert of the semester on Oct. 6 in the Boutell Memorial Concert Hall. (Madelaine Vikse | Northern Star) The NIU Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Orchestra held their first concert of the fall semester on Thursday.  Led by professor Rodrigo Villanueva Conroy and graduate teaching assistant Austyn Menk, the Jazz Ensemble started the concert with “Hay Burner,” a chart by Sammy Nestico. “I missed the music,” said Tim Schultz, a DeKalb resident. Schultz came to see his son Jared, a sophomore music major, play. “It’s good to be back,” Schultz added.  After the saxophone soli and trumpet solo in “Hay Burner,” the band moved on to their second song, “Beyond the Limit,” a Bob Mintzer composition. The ensemble’s third song, “A Child is Born,” written by Thaddeus Jones, was slower than the first two songs. The song started with a piano solo which morphed into a flugelhorn solo by trumpet player Olivia Garcia. “We have been working on these tunes,” said Garcia, a junior music education major. “When we get up there, I think the energy’s gonna be there, and then we’re just going to execute it well.”   Paisley Stevens, a junior music major, said she attended the concert because she used to play jazz and hopes to join the band next year. “Thad Jones’ charts have so much crazy stuff, so that’s fun to hear,” Stevens said. The Jazz Ensemble finished their set with “Boplicity,” made famous by Miles Davis and written by Cleo Henry and Gil Evans.  “Ain’t it feel good to swing!” said Jazz Orchestra director and professor of jazz studies Reginald “Reggie” Thomas after walking on stage. Menk struck the first chords to “Corner Pocket (Until I Met You)” by Freddie Green and the Jazz Orchestra was underway.  Going into the next song, Thomas announced a project the jazz department is starting. This year, the bands will be “traveling” through music to places that helped form jazz, according to Thomas.  Thomas figuratively took the band to New Orleans and introduced them to Louis Armstrong through a song written by Armstrong’s second wife, Lil Hardin Armstrong, “Struttin’ With Some Barbeque.” The song was centered around a trombone solo from Kirby Fellis, a second-year graduate teaching assistant, which felt straight out of a New Orleans second line. Its simplistic melodic progression and intense dancing spirit filled the room. In a conversation after the show, Fellis and Menk talked about their favorite parts of the show.  “It is inspiring to play with people like this,” Fellis said about his performance. Menk responded, saying, “That’s what it’s all about.”  The smooth alto saxophone from second-year music performance graduate student Evon Sams shone in the group’s slowed-down version of Billy Strayhorn’s “Take The ‘A’ Train.”  The concert closed with another Thomas-led musical vacation, this time to Trinidad and Tobago with the song “Calypsoscope” composed by Matt Harris. “Calypsoscope” featured Sams, Menk and guitarist Jackson Wheeler, a junior music major.  For those who attended the concert for loved ones, the music played a part in the decision. Amanda Perez, a junior music major, came to watch her boyfriend perform.  “I look forward to jazz,” Perez said. “It’s good to hear something different from day to day music.” The NIU Jazz Ensemble will have their next concert on Nov. 14 and the Jazz Orchestra will have theirs on Nov. 17. To students thinking about coming to these shows, Zaire Burks, a sophomore music major, said the show was “a concert you needed to go to. If you love good music, know it’s on your campus.”

Menter A Busnes Welcomes New Board Directors Business News Wales
Menter A Busnes Welcomes New Board Directors Business News Wales
Menter A Busnes Welcomes New Board Directors – Business News Wales https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/menter-a-busnes-welcomes-new-board-directors-business-news-wales/ Menter a Busnes has welcomed several new members to its Board, including, for the first time, two Young Non-Executive Directors. Earlier this year, the leading independent economic company created a post to give an ambitious person under the age of 30 valuable board and governance experience and the opportunity to contribute to the direction and development of the company. Following a rigorous selection process, the company’s Board appointed two Young Non-Executive Directors – Elin Havard and Erin Gwenlli Thomas. The Board’s chair, Fflur Jones, said Menter a Busnes had recently reviewed its governance arrangements.  “As part of that review, we identified that our Board was not quite reflective of the society Menter a Busnes seeks to represent and serve, in that we did not have younger people under the age of 30 on the Board. “The Board also agreed that as an organisation renowned for its support to budding Welsh businesses and its own entrepreneurship as a company, Menter a Busnes should offer the opportunity for younger board members to join our ranks. This would give young and aspiring members of our communities the chance to grow and gain experience of Board membership, but also to bring their own unique perspectives and experiences as younger people to the Board. “After a competitive process, we were delighted to appoint Elin Havard and Erin Gwenlli Thomas to the Board. I have no doubt, following their interviews, that they will be an immense credit to themselves and to Menter a Busnes, and I am looking forward to working with them over the next few years.” Communications expert, 28-year-old Erin Gwenlli Thomas from Porthmadog, is keen to learn more about what makes a successful business tick and to play her part in helping enhance the economy in Wales. Erin currently works with Ambition North Wales, a partnership focused on improving the region’s economic, social, and environmental well-being through delivering the multi-million-pound North Wales Growth Deal. Having travelled extensively and worked in several parts of the UK, Erin is looking forward to using her experiences and perspectives to aid the Menter a Busnes Board. “I’ve worked on projects to develop the economy, and I am passionate about developing Wales to ensure the same opportunities here as I’ve seen in other parts of the UK. I want to help drive opportunities here, and to give something back”. “Working with the Board of Directors, including talented individuals with varied experience and skills will also help my professional development. I aim to gain an intricate understanding of how a successful business operates at Board level and how it maximises its local contribution”. A Business Management graduate, Erin is currently studying for a certificate in Advanced Media Production. A member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations, Erin sees her position with Menter a Busnes as an essential learning experience building towards her future goals. She said, “It’s my ambition to run my own company in the future. Working with Menter a Busnes will help me develop those additional businesses skills to start such” Based in Aberystwyth, with offices throughout Wales, Menter a Busnes has enjoyed particular success operating in agriculture, skills development, and food and drink. As such, the company manages several programmes on behalf of the Welsh Government, including elements of Farming Connect and Cywain. Therefore, for fellow young director Elin Havard, a place at the Menter a Busnes Board table complements her work life and personal interests. An agricultural manager for a food retailer, 25-year-old Elin lives on her family’s farm in Sennybridge. An active member of her local Young Farmers’ Club, Elin studied biological sciences at Oxford University and, supported by the NFU Mutual Charitable Trust Centenary Award; she is due to complete an MBA in Innovation in Sustainable Food and Agriculture this autumn. As a Young Non-Executive Director, Elin hopes to bring another view to the boardroom and learn valuable lessons she can use on her career path. Elin said, “Menter a Busnes is leading the way in offering young people this rare opportunity to gain board-level skills. I am grateful for the chance to learn from people highly experienced in areas that interest me and really look forward to joining the team.” “Whilst still early in my career, I hope that my passion and experiences to date in food and farming will help me make a valuable contribution to the Board at what is a crucially important – but equally exciting – time to be getting involved.” Erin and Elin are among four new Directors who have taken their places at the Board table, and include Dr Prysor Williams and Dylan Owen. Hailing from Pandy Tudur in Conwy, Dr Prysor Williams is Senior Lecturer in Environmental Management at the School of Natural Sciences at Bangor University. While Dylan Owen, who is Deputy Head of Farmer Relationships at Oxbury Bank Plc, is from Llanrwst Fflur Jones said, “We are also delighted to welcome two other new board members to our midst, with Prysor Williams and Dylan Owen joining us. These appointments, along with the recent appointment of Llŷr Roberts as Chief Executive, signal incredibly exciting times for Menter a Busnes as we prepare for the challenges currently facing the economy in Wales and beyond. “We have a talented team both on the board and within the executive, and it is my great pleasure and privilege to serve as chair of this important Welsh organisation at a time of such significant change
