On Tuesday, October 18, Adobe announced the launch of a new set of tools for users to create “metaverse ready immersive experiences”. The new launch added products to Substance 3D, a portfolio of creator tools that is also the 3D equivalent of Adobe’s long-running and popular Creative Cloud suite of video and photo editing tools. In addition, the company signed a partnership with Meta to bring its Substance 3D suite to the Facebook parent’s Quest virtual reality platform.
In return, Meta will make Adobe’s tools available to its Quest users to let them build their own 3D content for use in Quest headsets.
Explaining the additions made to the metaverse-centric creative tools suite, Sebastien Deguy, vice-president and head of 3D and metaverse at Adobe, said that brand investments in metaverse and 3D content creation have “skyrocketed” in the past one year, as brands prepare for “transition to a new medium”.
Adobe also said that its partnership with Meta for the new Substance 3D suite is part of a “multi-year commitment” between the two brands, which will see present and future Adobe metaverse creativity tools being made accessible to users of Meta’s Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets.
Adobe said in a statement that its Substance 3D suite is already used by game publishers such as Electronic Arts, Microsoft and Ubisoft, and major global developers such as Epic Games and Nvidia, to “prototype and deploy early metaverse experiences”.
Nvidia, for instance, has its own suite of 3D immersive platforms under its ‘Omniverse’ label. The company is also working on bringing 3D visualization to automotive development platforms, as well as in immersive industrial designs.
Interestingly, the Adobe-Meta partnership comes amid questions on Meta failing to find takers for its Horizon Worlds metaverse. In a report earlier this week, The Wall Street Journal said that while Meta had set a target to amass half a million users of Horizon Worlds by the end of 2022, the figure only stands at around 200,000 — less than half of Meta’s target.
More worryingly, the report added that only about 9% of its users account for returning users to the virtual space, after the first month of signing up on the platform.

SOMERVILLE, Tenn. — Skill Wilson had amassed more than three decades of knowledge as a paramedic, first in Memphis and then in Fayette County. Two places that felt like night and day.
With only five ambulances in the county and the nearest hospital as much as 45 minutes away, Skill relished the clinical know-how necessary to work in a rural setting. Doing things like sedating patients to insert tubes into their airways.
But when it came to covid-19, despite more than 1 million deaths nationwide, Skill and his family felt their small town on the central-eastern side of Fayette County, with its fields of grazing cattle and rows of cotton and fewer than 200 covid deaths since the start of the pandemic, was a cocoon against the raging health emergency.
“It was a lot easier to stay away from others,” his widow, Hollie Wilson, said of the largely White and predominantly conservative county of about 42,000 residents. “Less people. Less chance of exposure.”
Covid seemed like other people’s problems — until it wasn’t.
The imbalance in death rates among the nation’s racial and ethnic groups has been a defining part of the pandemic since the start. To see the pattern, The Washington Post analyzed every death during more than two years of the pandemic. Early in the crisis, the differing covid threat was evident in places such as Memphis and Fayette County. Deaths were concentrated in dense urban areas, where Black people died at several times the rate of White people.
“I don’t want to say that we weren’t worried about it, but we weren’t,” said Hollie, who described her 59-year-old husband as someone who “never took a pill.” After a while, “you kind of slack off on some things,” she said.
Over time, the gap in deaths widened and narrowed but never disappeared — until mid-October 2021, when the nation’s pattern of covid mortality changed, with the rate of death among White Americans sometimes eclipsing other groups.
A Post analysis of covid death data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from April 2020 through this summer found the racial disparity vanished at the end of last year, becoming roughly equal. And at times during that same period, the overall age-adjusted death rate for White people slightly surpassed that of Black and Latino people.
The nature of the virus makes the elderly and people with underlying health conditions — including hypertension, diabetes and obesity, all of which beset Black people at higher rates and earlier in life than White people — particularly vulnerable to severe illness and death.
That wasn’t Skill.
The virus also attacks unvaccinated adults — who polls show are more likely to be Republicans — with a ferocity that puts them at a much higher risk of infection and death.
That was Skill.
He joined the choir of critics opposing vaccination requirements, his rants in front of the television eventually wearing on Hollie, who, even if she agreed, grew tired of listening and declared their home “covid-talk free.”
So, she said, Skill commiserated with like-minded people in Facebook groups and on Parler and Rumble, the largely unmoderated social networking platforms popular with conservatives.
“We’re Republicans, and 100 percent believe that it’s each individual’s choice — their freedom” when it comes to getting a coronavirus shot, Hollie said in January. “We decided to err on the side of not doing it and accept the consequences. And now, here we are in the middle of planning the funeral.”
Capt. Julian Greaves Wilson Jr., known to everybody as Skill, died of covid Jan. 23, a month after becoming infected with the coronavirus. He fell ill not long after transporting a covid patient to the hospital. At the time he died, infection rates in Fayette County had soared to 40.5 percent among people taking coronavirus tests.
When the coronavirus appeared in the United States, it did what airborne viruses do — latched onto cells in people’s respiratory tract, evaded innate immune responses and multiplied. The pathogen, free of politics or ideology, had a diverse reservoir of hosts and found fertile pathways for growth in the inequalities born from centuries of racial animus and class resentments.
Unequal exposure, unequal spread, unequal vulnerability and unequal treatment concentrated harm in communities that needed protection the most yet had the least. Cumulatively, Black, Latino and Native American people are 60 percent more likely to die of covid.
But as the pandemic progressed, the damage done by the virus broadened, and the toxicity of modern-day politics came to the fore.
The Post analysis revealed the changing pattern in covid deaths. At the start of the pandemic, Black people were more than three times as likely to die of covid as their White peers. But as 2020 progressed, the death rates narrowed — but not because fewer Black people were dying. White people began dying at increasingly unimaginable numbers, too, the Post analysis found.
In summer 2021, the nation saw some of the pandemic’s lowest death rates, as vaccines, shoring up the body’s immune response, became widely available.
Then came the delta variant. The virus mutated, able to spread among the vaccinated. As it did, an erosion of trust in government and in medicine — in any institution, really — slowed vaccination rates, stymieing the protection afforded by vaccines against severe illness and death.
After delta’s peak in September 2021, the racial differences in covid deaths started eroding. The Post analysis found that Black deaths declined, while White deaths never eased, increasing slowly but steadily, until the mortality gap flipped. From the end of October through the end of December, White people died at a higher rate than Black people did, The Post found.
That remained true except for a stretch in winter 2021-2022, when the omicron variant rampaged. The Black death rate jumped above White people’s when the spike in cases and deaths overwhelmed providers in the Northeast, resulting in a bottleneck of testing and treatment.
When the surge subsided, the Black death rate once again dropped below the White rate.
“Usually, when we say a health disparity is disappearing, what we mean is that … the worse-off group is getting better,” said Tasleem Padamsee, an assistant professor at Ohio State University who researched vaccine use and was a member of the Ohio Department of Health’s work group on health equity. “We don’t usually mean that the group that had a systematic advantage got worse.”
That’s exactly what happened as the White death rate surpassed that for Black people, even though Black Americans routinely confront stress so corrosive it causes them to age quicker, become sicker and die younger.
The shift in covid death rates “has vastly different implications for public health interventions,” said Nancy Krieger, professor of social epidemiology at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Officials must figure out how to connect with “communities who are ideologically opposed to the vaccine” while contending with “the cumulative impact of injustice” on communities of color.
“Think about the fact that everyone who is age 57 and older in this country was born when Jim Crow was legal,” she said. “What that did was intersect with covid-19, meaning that embodied history is part of this pandemic, too.”
So what contributed to the recent variation in death rates? And why?
The easy explanation is that it reflects the choices of Republicans not to be vaccinated, but the reasons go deeper. The Post interviewed historians and researchers who study the effects of White racial politics and social inequality on health, spoke with relatives and friends of those lost to covid, and compiled data from federal databases and academic studies.
What emerged is a story about how long-standing issues of race and class interacted with the physical and psychological toll of mass illness and death, unprecedented social upheaval, public policies — and public opinion.
Resilience gave way to fatigue. Holes left by rural hospital closures deepened. Medical mistrust and misinformation raged. Skeptics touted debunked alternatives over proven treatments and prevention. Mask use became a victim of social stigma.
Many Republicans decided they would rather roll the dice with their health than follow public health guidance — even when provided by President Donald Trump, who was booed after saying he had been vaccinated and boosted.
Researchers at Ohio State found Black and White people were about equally reluctant to get the coronavirus vaccine when it first became available, but Black people overcame that hesitancy faster. They came to the realization sooner that vaccines were necessary to protect themselves and their communities, Padamsee said.
As public health efforts to contain the virus were curtailed, the pool of those most at risk of becoming casualties widened. The No. 1 cause of death for 45-to-54-year-olds in 2021 was covid, according to federal researchers.
“I still remember when I was doing the mayor’s press conferences a few months into this, and I made note of the fact that most of those people who had died look like me,” said James E.K. Hildreth, president and CEO of Meharry Medical College, one of the nation’s oldest and largest private, historically Black academic health sciences center, in Nashville. The leak occurred when a contractor attempting to change the water meter within the residence, accidently broke a gas line with no working gas valve in the basement. The contractor immediately left the residence and called SHFD from a safe distance.

Safely Detecting Natural Gas Leaks From a Distance
Upon arriving at the scene and conducting a quick investigation the RMLD-FR was used to detect natural gas through the basement window with a first read of 2,700 PPM. With the high PPM reading, SHFD broke a basement window and brought in a battery-operated fan to ventilate the residence. The fan was placed at the front door while SHFD continued to monitor the natural gas concentration utilizing the RMLD-FR. Air exiting the broken-out basement window was reading at 6% LEL. After forty-five minutes the residence was down to 35 PPM of natural gas and cleared for entry by the utility representative on-site.
“Sterling Heights Fire Department began using the RMLD-FR this year and it has already proven to be an extremely useful tool. Prior to having this equipment, we would send firefighters into a structure with a gas leak in full gear, SCBA and air monitor, not knowing the levels we were going into until we were possibly in a danger zone. This detector has given us a tactical advantage to determine high natural gas levels within a structure from a safe distance,” states William Walker, Battalion Chief of Sterling Heights Fire Department.
The RMLD-FR is a reliable and quick way to detect the presence of methane. Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS), the operator can shine a beam through most windows and common venting points. The audible and visual signal indicates the level of methane present, allowing first responders to make quick decisions about how to control the gas and ignition sources. In addition to its fast detection time, the RMLD-FR features Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS capability and more. This makes it a versatile tool that can be used in various situations.

As people drive along Cloud Street in Salina during the next two weeks, they may see the progression of a small home being built by their fellow community members to help people a state away.
As part of Tiny House Ministries, members of New Community Christian Church and other members of the Salina community and elsewhere, are using their free time, or in the case of some, vacation time from work, to create a single, micro, tiny house.
“This one happens to (be) 8-feet wide and 18-feet long and built on a double-axel camper trailer,” said Tom Hawks, who is leading the building effort in Salina.
Tom Hawks and his wife, Eva Hawks, who live in Smolan and attend New Community, created Bent Nail Ministries, an organization that provides volunteers and supplies to other places for short-term mission trips. It was through this ministry that the couple became connected with Curtis White and Tiny House.

“What (White) does is partner up with local churches, which then partner up with local homeless shelters,” Tom Hawks said. “Then those that are homeless and want to come out of the homeless environment and back into the regular community will go to these churches that have restoration programs.”
This tiny house is headed to Missouri
The tiny houses built for the ministry are used in these restoration programs to give people a place to live, with a little bit of independence.
In the case of the house being built in Salina this month, it will be taken to Carterville, Missouri, part of the Joplin metro area, and given to the First Baptist Church there.
“Each church does something different,” Hawks said. “(First Baptist) was given a church in town, another Baptist church that closed, and they’re going in and making that an apartment complex.”
He said once the complex is complete, people will have a place to live while taking part in the restoration program.
“They’re going to put four of five of these tiny houses right up next to the building, so that as (people in the program) progress and grow, they’ll give them more independence,” Hawks said.
People in these tiny houses will still be taking part in the restoration program but will be given the opportunity to learn how to live more on their own, rather in a group housing setting.

Hawks said by providing something like housing, it can be a way to provide comfort to those that need it.
“If you can provide that comfort for them, that (in turn) can help (ministries) focus on other needs they may have,” Hawks said.
Working together for a common good
This is the second year that New Community has hosted a build in its parking lot, but it is the fifth year that it and Bent Nail Ministries has been involved with Tiny House Ministries, having taken short-term mission trips to build houses before COVID hit.
In 2021, Hawks said there was an average of 17 people working each day in Salina during the tiny house project, and this year he’s expecting about the same.
For those who are involved, which includes more than just the builders, but also people like painters and kitchen staff supporting the builders, it’s a rewarding experience to be able to help people they may never meet, especially doing it with people who share a common belief.
“I’m here to help build this house for somebody that needs it,” said Josh Call.
Call, who is from Salina originally but now lives in Arizona working as a truck driver, took a week of his vacation time to travel back home and volunteer his time.
“(One thing) that’s important to me is the fellowship of good people who share a belief and are doing good for other people,” Call said.
Helping with this particular project is somewhat personal for Call as well.
“I’ve been, basically, homeless before,” Call said. “I’ve never been (living) on the street, but I’ve been very close to being there.”
Having this perspective means that Call understands what this ministry means to those who need it.
“It gives you a new start and a hope,” Call said. “If I was homeless and somebody did this for me, it would change my life.”

Are you in control of your life? Think about it.
Every one of us has a day occasionally when we feel that we are completely out of control of ourselves and our environment. We think everyone and everything is beyond our reach, much less our control. Those times quickly pass and we feel better about things in general.
It is important that we be in control of certain facets of our lives. This control is important to our well-being and our health, mentally and physically. That does not mean that we are a “controlling person.” It simply means that we have taken charge of our life.
I can remember when I was about 5 or 6 years old and went to the garden with my grandma to pick beans or something. She would pick a while and pull weeds a while and then go back to picking vegetables for dinner. I remember asking her why she picked weeds when we were supposed to be cooking dinner for Grandpa. She replied that we have to pull weeds as we go along or they will “take over” the garden. Much like people and bad habits. We have to curb them (pull them) before they take over our lives. I have remembered her advice all these years.
Whether it is smoking, losing weight, using bad words, being hateful, or whatever, it is much easier to stop before they take over our lives. A habit is mighty hard to break. It has to be changed one puff, one bite, one word, one moment, one attitude at a time.
I am trying to make up my mind to get in control of my health and schedule. It is no contest, just a way to motivate me and keep me on track. I will keep a daily diary of healthy living that is doable. I will write down everything regarding exercise, activities, rest and food, and review my progress every month. There are many things available to encourage us and motivate us. I simply want to take better care of myself and live as long as I can. I just want to be healthy.
Our goals are not to be beautiful or skinny or to run a marathon. We just want to stay motivated and be happy. We need to take daily steps to improve ourselves. We just need self-control to be satisfied with ourselves. Regardless of age, we should do everything we can to live full lives.
In every situation, all of us need to be in control of our attitude and disposition. We cannot control the actions of others, but we can certainly control our reaction to what they say or do. Nothing anyone does can upset us unless we allow them to upset us. We control that reaction. Sometimes we just have to tune them out of our lives. We have to go on with our own business at hand and ignore them. Helen Keller stated her philosophy of life in the following lines: “We cannot choose what life will bring us, of joy or pain, but what our souls bring to meet the challenge, this is in our power.”
We must govern our own time schedule. We need to learn to say “no” if necessary. We need to learn when we have enough to do, and then stop there. If we take on too much or too many projects, we will fall behind schedule, which means we will be late to appointments and make others wait on us. That in itself is very rude and thoughtless. Stay in command. It takes practice, but it is well worth the effort.
Time is too important to be wasted. It has been said many times before, but it needs repeating: Do not waste time, for that is the stuff of which life is made. Along with regulating our time, we need to direct the activities that we participate in. We want to just stay in control of our activities and ourselves and the other things will fall into place.
Every magazine has at least one new diet or suggestion for improvement. They may work for some but not for all of us. Libraries are full of books about easy control of anything. There are gyms on every corner that are there to help us get proper exercise. All the reading in the world won’t help us get in control. It has to come from within. We have to do the work ourselves. We must stay motivated and in control and really want to be healthy and enjoy life to the fullest.
The real test of our character is our ability to make satisfactory adjustments to new or difficult situations. Our ability to change and be in control helps us build strength that we may need later as we face challenges that may occur without warning. The decisions we make now will build into the fiber of our being, resources that may be drawn upon in the hours of supreme need. We have to stay in control of ourselves and thoughts and actions. Stay ready.
Remember this poem about the mighty oak: Now, THAT is control!

In my household, I have had to change my way of cooking several times. I thought I never could, but I did. It is surprising how simple it is to alter basic recipes and to look for those with acceptable ingredients so they are healthy. This is a favorite:
Shrimp Gumbo and Rice
½ cup chopped onion
½ cup chopped green bell pepper
¼ cup chopped celery
¼ cup water
1 (28-ounce) can chopped tomatoes, undrained
1 cup cut okra (optional)
½ teaspoon minced garlic (or 1/8 teaspoon garlic powder)
½ teaspoon dried, crushed rosemary (optional)
¼ teaspoon paprika
¼ teaspoon pepper
1½ cup water
1 package (6¼ ounce) quick cooking long grain rice
1 package (6¼ ounce) quick cooking wild rice mix
1 (16 ounce) package frozen, peeled and deveined shrimp
Several dashes bottled hot sauce
Cook onions, bell pepper and celery in ¼ cup water. Add tomatoes, okra and spices. Add 1¼ cups more water. Add both packages rice and bring to boil. Stir in shrimp. Return to boiling and cook 4 to 5 minutes longer on reduced heat. Serve in bowls with additional hot pepper sauce as desired.

Metaverse tokens burst onto the world stage on a tidal wave of enormous promises and mind-boggling figures. Experts trumpeted Total Addressable Market (TAM) figures like five billion users and $13 trillion dollars and the world’s largest publicly-traded social network, Facebook, changed its name to Meta and guided over $15 billion in metaverse expenditures. It has since actually spent that sum.
Speculators enjoyed big returns on rapidly appreciating plots of land in Decentraland, The Sandbox, Earth2, or NFT Worlds and metaverse builders marketed each of their virtual worlds as the next big thing.
Of course, as is the case with so many hyped crypto sectors, away from the fanfare and bright lights, metaverse adoption has achieved barely a fraction of its marketers’ promises.
Active usage rates are dropping rapidly and the value of most virtual land has plummeted, with average trading volumes for parcels down 98%. Some properties have created flurries of activity with branded events, incentivized gameplay, or sponsored performances, however, these promotions cannot make up for the fatal weakness of the metaverse: dismal user engagement.
Active users and value drop throughout 2022
Speculation drove most of 2021’s surge in virtual land prices. Investors were snapping up plots and then not doing anything with them and many ended up holding a property that no one even wanted to visit.
The small number of active users didn’t help matters. Users simply don’t stick around with very little to do outside of events organized by developers.
According to DappRadar, Decentraland earns an average of 654 unique wallet actions per day. Using different math, Decentraland estimates Daily Active Users (DAUs) to be around 8,000. The project also says it sold a notable number of in-world items like wearables and emotes. Decentraland acknowledges that DAUs have dropped since 2021 but says the number of core users is still healthy.
For perspective, Decentraland’s token, MANA, is valued at $1.1 billion, or $137,000 per DAU.
The Sandbox’s proprietary token, SAND, has dropped 87% since the start of the year. Investors have introduced brands like Atari and The Walking Dead to the metaverse, and it earned some traffic from its Alpha Season events. However, users barely even bothered outside Alpha Season. On average, the Sandbox earns a dismal 605 unique wallet actions per day. Even after increasing this DAU using the same math as Decentraland above, SAND is still valued above $100,000 per DAU.
The bubble in metaverse tokens burst in 2022. Virtual land trading volumes have declined 98%. Metaverse tokens have lost two-thirds of their value this year.
Even Facebook can’t save metaverse tokens
Since Facebook rebranded to Meta, it’s spent $15 billion building its metaverse, Horizon Worlds.
However, The Wall Street Journal has interviewed a number of Meta employees who have branded their own project unusable. It estimates that metaverse registrations are 300,000 people shy of the company’s 2022 goal. It also estimates that a majority of worlds built by creators are never visited by anyone other than their creator. Just 10% earn visits from more than 50 people.
In the middle of September 2022, metaverse vice president Vishal Shah expressed frustration with Horizon Worlds’ current state. He sent a memo telling employees that they need to use the rest of the year to “ensure that we fix our quality gaps and performance issues before we open up Horizon to more users. … The simple truth is, if we don’t love it, how can we expect our users to love it?”

Conclusion
Meta could have learned from its failed efforts with its multi-billion dollar Diem (formerly Libra) stablecoin project: Launching a successful digital asset ecosystem isn’t as easy as it looks. It gets perilous if employees can’t even enjoy it enough to use it themselves.
Across the world, metaverse projects are retreating from overhyped promises. Speculators realize that their undeveloped plots cannot hold value forever. Virtual events might get brief attention, but not even a big name like Meta can prop up a house of cards.

Oct 19 (Reuters) – Volume woes at U.S. railroad operators are set to spill into next year as labor shortages continue to hurt the sector that is critical in connecting consumers with businesses and finished goods, according to analysts.
U.S. railroads have come under criticism from regulators and shippers for staffing cuts in pursuit of a leaner operating model that boosted profitability, but affected rail services.
“While the labor environment does appear to be incrementally improving over the last several months, it will still take some time to see meaningful service improvement,” Wells Fargo said.

Railroad profits will be under further pressure from investments in service and U.S. union pay hikes through 2024, according to Susquehanna.
The North America railroad industry has also been under scrutiny for working conditions. The Biden administration last month secured a tentative deal between railroads and unions to avert a railway strike that could have wreaked havoc on the U.S. economy.

Service metrics further deteriorated during the pandemic, when railroads struggled to bring back workers they let go, at the same time dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19 among existing staff, prompting companies such as Union Pacific Corp (UNP.N) to scale back some service temporarily.

Nasdaq futures rose Wednesday after the major averages posted a second straight day of gains, and Netflix reported strong earnings.
Futures tied to the Nasdaq 100 added 0.4%. S&P 500 gained 0.3%, and Dow Jones Industrial Average futures advanced 44 points, or 0.1%.
Netflix shares rallied 13% after the streaming giant posted earnings and revenue that beat estimates as well as strong subscriber growth for the third quarter. Other tech-related names such as Meta, Amazon and Microsoft traded higher in the premarket.
Those results come as some on Wall Street reset their earnings projections lower as investors worry about a recession. Gene Goldman, chief investment officer at Cetera Investment Management, said that while an economic recession could be mild, the market could struggle with those downward revisions.
“Earnings estimates are a bit too high for the S&P 500 at 7% to 9% per year going forward,” he said. “Slowing economic growth and Fed rate hikes will likely put downward pressure on earnings. Because earnings drive stock prices, they could pressure markets for some time.”
Tech earnings will be in full swing next week, but IBM and Tesla are on deck to report Wednesday. Social media firm Snap will report later in the week.
In economic data, investors are looking forward to housing starts on Wednesday. The Federal Reserve’s so-called Beige Book, the central bank’s report on the current state of economic conditions, will come out as well.
Wednesday’s moves came after another strong day for stocks, with the Dow rallying about 337 points Tuesday and the S&P 500 gaining 1.1%.
What Wall Street analysts have to say about Netflix’s quarter
Many analysts cheered Netflix‘s quarterly results, which could signal the start of a bigger turnaround for the streaming giant.
Deutsche Bank analyst Bryan Kraft also upgraded Netflix to buy, noting that there’s now “visibility into a subscriber growth inflection point next year given that Netflix management has confirmed both the early 2023 introduction of its new measures designed to better monetize account sharing.”
JPMorgan’s Doug Anmuth also upgraded the stock to overweight from neutral, noting that he sees the company’s crackdown on password sharing and new advertising initiatives as tools to help the company accelerate revenue growth.

U.S. crude futures move up $1 per barrel on expectations that Biden will release oil from Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Futures of West Texas Intermediate crude moved up around $1, or 1.33% and futures of Brent crude rose $0.83, or 0.92% as the Biden administration is expected to release more oil from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
The plan could be announced as early as Wednesday, sources told CNBC.
The move aims to extend the current SPR delivery program, which began this spring, through December, the sources said.

Company earnings are beating expectations
Of the 9.15% of S&P 500 companies that have reported earnings so far this season, 70% of them have posted positive surprises, according to data from FactSet.
Earnings expectations have been lowered considerably and the market is braced for a good amount of negative news in earnings season, Yung-Yu Ma, BMO Wealth Management chief investment strategist, told CNBC.
However, he added, “to the extent that that doesn’t actually transpire, that we get more of a nuanced message that companies on average are doing okay, okay is still pretty good in an environment where the market is braced for volatility, turmoil, slowing growth, declines and a challenging environment.”

In the beginning
In early 2020, Zedwell, a London-based hotel became the first sleep-centric property, which featured innovative soundproof rooms and AI-powered mattresses. A year later, Hastens, a Swedish bed manufacturer established the world’s first 15-room boutique hotel called Hästens Sleep Spa Hotel in the Portuguese city of Coimbra. What lead to the rise?
The pandemic spurned people into collectively prioritising their general mental and physical well-being. Global travel and tour operator Sandeep Arora, head, Brightsun Travel Private Limited says, “Since Covid-19, there has been a focus on our sleep cycles as many people struggled with it. This might be one of the reasons why this trend has picked. Yes, it’s still not prevalent in India but we have travellers whose sole reason for travelling is to rest and get back to a normal sleep routine.”
Insomnia, which is a persistent problem with falling and staying asleep, is one of the most common sleeping disorder that people deal with. “A survey conducted by Nielsen with over 5,600 people across 25 Indian cities confirmed that 93% of Indians suffer from sleep deprivation. This has led to a rise in the sleep therapy market in India and sleep tourism is an attempt to serve this demand, which is growing at the rate of 20 percent,” says Dr Arunesh Kumar, head and senior consultant, Sleep Medicine and Pulmonology, Paras Hospitals, Gurugram.
“Relaxation and sleep are a basic human need but owing to the fast paced lifestyle, people have to give dedicated time to fulfill these needs. For those in the corporate world, work stress and lack of personal time makes slow travel a priority. Sleep tourism is a form of slow tourism and it is only going to get bigger from here,” says Chhavi Chadha, travel advisor and founder, Bespoke Tailormade Experiences.
Adapting Indian market
This concept is slowly making its way to India with a few boutique hotels and luxury properties taking the initiative to offer ways to get better sleep. The Belgadia Palace in Mayurbhanj, Odisha is one such place. “We partnered with a luxury sleep solutions company and our mattresses helps with back and neck ache, which is a very common problem among the youth today. We also offer a pillow concierge service where we provide five different kinds of pillows for various ailments and health issues,” says Akshita Bhanj Deo, owner of the Palace, who published their own sleep playlist. At ₹18,000 plus taxes for a couple’s one night stay, the property offers its guests a speed dial to doctors and mental health experts.
Yoga, Ayurvedic practices, naturopathy, chakra spa are some other offerings hotels are providing to ensure mental and physical well-being, including sound sleep. Jehan Numa Hotels in Bhopal also has a pillow menu, which “includes five types of pillow such as microfibre, memory foam, buckwheat hull, siliconised fibre, down and feather pillows. We have not received any direct query for sleep tourism, our guests are on the look out for holidays where they can unwind and rejuvenate from their hectic lives,” shares Faiz Rashid, managing director.

PACE Engineers, Inc. announced 10 promotions.
Shane Sheldon, PE, has been promoted to principal engineer. Sheldon is a water resources engineer with 14 years of experience. He has been with PACE since 2019 and leads the Water Resources group. He holds an undergraduate degree in geology and a master’s in water resources engineering. Sheldon has extensive experience in fish passage design, including complex fish ladders, intake systems for hydropower projects, stream restoration, and fish passage culvert replacements in Washington and Oregon. He is currently leading hydraulic designs for WSDOT fish barrier correction projects throughout the Northwest.
Tom Ferrell, PE, has been promoted to project manager. Ferrell has been with PACE for 15 years, focusing on Oregon municipal projects. He has recently designed three reservoirs, four pump stations, and six miles of water main for local public works agencies.
Rosanna Brown, PE, has been promoted to senior project manager. Brown has 16 years of civil engineering experience, specializing in land development. She joined PACE five years ago and is leading the design for several assisted living facilities in West Seattle, Sammamish, and Woodinville, as well as several large apartment complexes in North Bend, Shoreline, and Everett. Brown was appointed to the Snohomish County Planning Commission in January 2022.
Mitchell Boyd, PE, was promoted to project engineer. Boyd joined PACE in 2021 and has seven years of civil engineering experience. He is currently designing several water and sewer system projects. He supports our planning group with comprehensive water and sewer system plans and water plan extensions.
Colin Nicol has been promoted to environmental scientist. Nicol has over 11 years of fluvial geomorphology and physical habitat assessment experience. Before PACE, he was the lead developer of the NOAA lifecycle model, which prioritized restoration actions in the Chehalis Aquatic Species Restoration Plan. Nicol brings a strong background in river restoration, salmon ecology, and the scientific literature underpinning these disciplines. He is currently leading the habitat design of the SR 167 to 509 Riparian Restoration Program. The project will advance the use of beaver dam analogs to aid in restoring approximately 150 acres of aquatic and floodplain habitat.
Dean Stampfler is now a senior survey technician. Stampfler has been a part of the PACE team for 13 years. He plays a significant role in the successes of the survey team, specifically on projects across the Pacific Northwest, notably Washington’s fish passage and Oregon’s transportation projects. Stampfler’s daily tasks include coordinating and dispatching survey crews and collaborating with other disciplines within PACE.
Tasha Wang, PE, was promoted to senior engineer. Wang is an design engineer specializing in water resources engineering. She holds a master’s degree in hydrology and hydrodynamics from the University of Washington. Wang has been a crucial part of PACE’s Water Resources group since 2019 and is a technical lead for hydraulic modeling. She is currently leading preliminary hydraulic design reports for WSDOT fish barrier projects and supporting design-build fish passage and stream restoration projects.
Andreas Olhausen, PE, has been promoted to project engineer. Olhausen has nine years of civil engineering experience and joined the PACE team four years ago. He is a key contributor in designing water system improvements for special utility districts and reviewing developer extension plans.
Paula Welly was promoted to business development specialist. Welly joined PACE at the peak of the pandemic in 2021. Her ten years in the AEC industry have helped her navigate PACE through various business development and marketing projects. Welly’s natural leadership skills have played a vital role as she has worked with PACE’s disciplines to develop business development strategies.
Christian Nichols, PE, has been promoted to project engineer. Nichols has over nine years of civil engineering experience and has been at PACE for five years. He is a main player in our land development projects. One of his recent projects, Ellie Passivhaus in Queen Anne, Seattle, won NAIOP’s Sustainable Development of the Year award- Nichols was the project engineer.

STEUBENVILLE — The third-annual Red Ribbon Week Community Walk will be Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. at the Jim Wood Park gazebo and track.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation’s largest and longest-running drug-use prevention campaign.
The Red Ribbon walk was established in 2017 by the Adult Drug Court Program, now Phoenix Program, under Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Michelle Miller. Due to the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 walks were canceled.
“The drug court team may work with adults but we’re also huge supporters of early education and drug-use prevention with our youth,” said Laura Trifinoff, the program coordinator. “It’s so important to the entire team that we help educate and protect our youth against the harmful effects of drugs and alcohol.”
Trifinoff said they did a lot of advertising this year, distributing fliers in schools and posting yard signs throughout the community, and they’re hoping to get “a significant number of kids and families” at this year’s event.
“It’s a community event to get kids and families out to celebrate being drug free and to educate,” she said, adding there will be 15 different treatment centers/community partners there to distribute information, along with DJ Ralph Parissi; Kurt James Fun and Games with its ‘Hippo Chow Down’ life-sized Hungry Hungry Hippo and the Mega Thrill 3 Lane Obstacle Course; face painting; drawings for children and parents who sign the ‘Red Ribbon Pledge’, giveaways and more.
“We were able to partner with the United Prevention Partnership and Drug Free Communities Program to be able to offer a lot more this year than we ever have in the past,” she said. “The walk is just a fun, or buddy, walk to encourage exercise and healthy living. There will be a lot of first responders and law enforcement joining us to show their support and to interact with the kids. Also, one of our graduates will be speaking.”
She said the event “is entirely free to the public.”

Besides the new 10th Gen iPad, Apple also introduced the next-gen iPad Pro with the M2 chipset. Although there’s no availability yet, the local price has been announced starting from RM3899. There are a couple of new features too so read on below to find out.
It was only a matter of time before the iPad Pro got an upgrade and that’s none other than the M2 chipset. To refresh your memory, the M2 has an 8-core CPU + 10-core GPU which are 15% faster in performance and 35% faster in graphics performance than the predecessor. Combining it with 16GB of RAM, the 16-core Neural Engine is 40% faster and can process 15.8 trillion operations per second.
The M2 chip also features 100GB/s of unified memory bandwidth — 50% more than M1 — and supports up to 16GB of fast unified memory. Obviously, this allows the iPad Pro to do more demanding work such as HD photo editing on the spot, 3D designing, healthcare analysis as well as mobile gaming. The M2 also extends to the new media engine and the image signal processor, which combined with the advanced cameras, enable users to capture ProRes video for the first time and transcode ProRes footage up to 3x faster.
The 2nd Gen Apple Pencil can now detect up to 12mm above the display. With Scribble, text fields automatically expand when the pencil gets near the screen, and handwriting converts to text even faster. In terms of connectivity, the new iPad Pro supports WiFi 6E with downloads up to 2.4Gb/s, as well as Wi-Fi + Cellular models with 5G (sub-6GHz and mmWave).
iPadOS 16 is set to be released on 24 October 2022 and will bring new updates for compatible iPads, such as new Mail and Safari tools. iPad users can look forward to the new Stage Manager, Weather app, photo and video interaction with Live Text and Visual Look Up, and others. South Korean police have seized $1.3 million worth of crypto in criminal investigations so far this year, official numbers have revealed.
According to Segye Ilbo, the figure is just a small fraction (1.4%) of the total $92 million worth of assets seized by officers in criminal investigations.
The data was compiled by the National Police Agency and made public by Choi Ki-sang, a Democratic Party lawmaker. It includes figures from the “first half” of 2022, with a total for the year unlikely to be made public until the middle of 2023.
The statistics also showed that officers have asked courts to let them confiscate cryptoassets in 13 separate cases this year. In 2021, officers made 36 such requests – and only made eight requests in the whole of 2020.
$1.3 m Seized: Officers ‘Can’t Keep up with Criminals’
Critics claim that the modest figure of $1.3 million shows that the police simply lack the knowledge and IT capabilities required to fight Web3-era crime. They claim that officers are unable to keep up with criminals – with some stating that crypto-powered money-laundering is actually rising sharply in South Korea.
The police force last year announced the launch of a network of specialized crypto teams, while the government is set to respond by launching a new crypto regulator. And, more recently, the nation’s prosecution service announced that it is ready to spend big on sophisticated crypto monitoring tools.
But despite claims that officers are getting better at stopping crypto-related crime, experts beg to differ.
Lee Woong-hyuk, a Professor of Policing at the elite Konkuk University, was quoted as stating:
“Money-laundering technology related to cryptoassets becomes more complex and more intelligent as the years go by, but investigative agencies […] cannot keep pace. There may be a need for government-level [intervention] to increase the amount of [illicit crypto seized in criminal investigations] and support investigations in cases related to cryptoassets.”

YEOJU, South Korea, Oct 19 (Reuters) – South Korean and American troops practiced building floating bridges to ferry tanks and other armoured vehicles across rivers on Wednesday, part of a larger joint military exercise that has angered North Korea.
South Korean attack helicopters deployed flares and armoured vehicles blew white smoke screens into the air as main battle tanks, armoured personnel carriers, and other military vehicles crossed pontoon bridges over the Namhan River near Yeoju, south of Seoul.
The drill involved armoured “attacking” forces of the South Korean army’s 11th Mobile Division, which is participating in the 12-day Hoguk 22 field exercises, crossing bridges established by South Korean and U.S. engineering units.

About 1,000 South Korean and U.S. troops participated on Wednesday, with about 50 tanks and other armoured vehicles, KF-16 fighter jets, Apache and Cobra attack helicopters, and more than 140 pieces of engineering equipment such as floating bridge units, according to South Korea’s defence ministry.
Nearby, residents water skied on the river and rode by on riverside bicycle paths.
The drills simulated a so-called wet gap crossing, military jargon for any obstacle filled with water, such as a river, said Captain Sean Kasprisin, a company commander in the U.S. Army’s 11th Engineer Battalion, calling it “tough and realistic training”.
In a war, such operations might be required if bridges were knocked out by bombing, or if an army wanted to surprise its opponents by crossing away from established bridges or roads.
“Developing river-crossing capabilities is a key factor that can make or break wartime operations given the Korean peninsula’s geography with many rivers,” said Lieutenant Colonel Won Seong-hoon of the South Korean 7th Engineer Brigade.
South Korea uses an older version of U.S.-made bridging equipment, and one span was assembled using elements from each side, allowing troops to practice combining the different systems.
“A lot of rivers can vary in how far across they are, so we don’t know where we need to deploy,” Kasprisin said. “So if that length is too far, then we need to be able to work together.”
Despite the tensions with North Korea, U.S. soldiers said they rarely had time to ponder geopolitics during the drills.
“The only thing on our mind is the training and making it realistic and effective,” Kasprisin said.

Huawei yesterday announced a €150 million investment and the creation of 200 new jobs as it plans to open its first European cloud hub in Dublin. The announcement was made at the Huawei Connect event in Paris, France.
The hub will create 60 jobs in the next two years and 200 by 2027, including sales, pre-sales, legal, tax, operational, management and research positions.
