Gray Whales Continue To Wash Up Dead And Emaciated, But Causes Remain Elusive – Los Angeles Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/gray-whales-continue-to-wash-up-dead-and-emaciated-but-causes-remain-elusive-los-angeles-times/ When gray whales began washing up dead in large numbers in 2019, many scientists hoped it was just a short-term phenomenon, and that the leviathans would quickly recover and rebound. But three years later, the die-off continues for gray whales living and migrating along North America’s Pacific coast. The population is down almost 40% from its peak in 2016. And in a report released Friday, federal scientists said the number of calves born last year was the lowest they’ve seen since they started observations in 1994. “Given the continuing decline in numbers since [the peak in] 2016, we need to be closely monitoring the population to help understand what may be driving the trend,” said David Weller, director of the Marine Mammal and Turtle Division at NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center, in a statement. “We have observed the population changing over time, and we want to stay on top of that.” In 2019, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration declared an “unusual mortality event” after an alarming number of gray whales began washing up along the shore from Mexico to Alaska. Then and now, the cause of the die-off remains elusive, but it appears that something has drastically altered the food web of these large, bottom-feeding cetaceans. A gray whale pushes her calf to the surface in Laguna San Ignacio, Baja California. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times) Every year, gray whales migrate from the warm, protected lagoons of Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to the cold waters of the Arctic and sub-Arctic, where they feed for months on small, shrimp-like creatures that dwell in the mud. Then they return to Mexico, where they mate, give birth and nurse their calves. It’s a 12,000-mile round trip migration that leads the whales past North America’s busy coast line — through shipping lanes, around fishing vessels, near crowded and intrusive tourist boats and occasionally into the maws of hungry orcas. Gray whales have had population contractions in the past. Between 1999 and 2000, the population declined by about 25%. However, it quickly rebounded, peaking in 2015-2016. Researchers pointed to unusually cold temperatures as a likely cause of that contraction. The frigid temperatures during that period expanded the reach of Arctic sea ice making it difficult for the whales to access their traditional prey items of amphipods and other shrimp-like creatures on the ocean floor of the Chukchi, Northern Bering and Beaufort Seas. Two gray whales feed in the sediment not far from Pasagshak Bay off of Kodiak Island, Kodiak, Alaska. (GEMM Lab / Oregon State University /NOAA) This time, scientists say there are likely multiple causes, including a prolonged period of warm temperatures — a consequence of climate change — a loss of sea ice and the subsequent movement and changes in the whales’ prey items. Many of the whales they encounter and observe appear skinny, while the bulk of whales that have stranded since 2019 — roughly 600 — have been malnourished. However, that’s not the case for all of the whales. Some were clearly killed by ship strikes, or drowned after being entangled by fishing line and nets, or shredded and eaten killer whales. Others may have died of disease. “There is no one thing that we can point to that explains all of the strandings,” said Deborah Fauquier, Veterinary Medical Officer in NOAA Fisheries’ Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program. “There appears to be multiple factors that we are still working to understand.” And the mothers that are having calves seem to be healthy and adequately fed, said Aimee Lang, a fisheries biologist with NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center who leads the field teams that count the whales as they migrate. While population counts for gray whales are typically conducted over the course of a two-year period, this year NOAA is adding a third year. Observers will watch from points along California’s central coast — at Granite Point for the southward migration and Piedras Blancas for the northward. Lang said they work in teams of two and watch for whales as they swim by; they also send drones out to capture data regarding their size and health. Elsewhere, whale watchers have noticed gray whales exhibiting unusual feeding behaviors, including this past summer in San Francisco Bay where the Marine Mammal Center’s Tim Markowitz and others saw gray whales lunge feeding — a behavior typical for humpbacks, in which they open their jaws wide, and lunge across the water’s surface scooping up fish and krill. “When I heard they were doing that, I figured the stories were wrong. It must have been humpbacks, ” said Markowitz in a July interview about a bonanza of anchovy in the Bay. “But then I saw it, and I was like ‘whoa!’ Gray whales don’t do that.” Elsewhere, gray whales have been observed feeding in areas they have historically avoided, including the shallow lagoons of the Baja Peninsula and the muddy, sandy shores of San Francisco Bay and Long Beach Harbor. A whale-watching group gets a closeup view of a gray whale in Laguna San Ignacio. (Carolyn Cole/Los Angeles Times) Gray whales have been called the “jeeps” of the ocean, because of their opportunistic feeding habits (although they prefer foods that live on the ocean floor, they will eat krill and other critters in the water column and on the surface). They’ve also been called the “sentinels” — because if something starts happening to them, it’s likely you’ll see it elsewhere. And that’s what has so many worried — if gray whales are having a hard time, a lot of others are, as well. “What we hope to see in the next few years is that the abundance stabilizes and then starts to show signs of increase,” said Lang. “We will be watching closely.” In May 2021, three gray whales washed ashore in the San Francisco Bay Area, where visitors to Muir Beach look at a decomposing gray whale. Cardinals Vs. Phillies Score, Takeaways: Jean Segura Sparks Stunning Ninth-Inning Comeback In Game 1 – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cardinals-vs-phillies-score-takeaways-jean-segura-sparks-stunning-ninth-inning-comeback-in-game-1-cbs-sports/ The Philadelphia Phillies shocked the St. Louis Cardinals with a ninth-inning comeback in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series Friday afternoon in St. Louis. It was 2-0 Cardinals heading to the ninth but would end in a 6-3 Phillies victory.  Here’s how it went down.  Helsley falters in furious Phillies comeback The Phillies’ offense was completely punchless for most of this one. Prior to the ninth inning, Alec Bohm’s double to lead off the fifth inning was their biggest scoring threat, and he was left helplessly on third base. It seemed elementary that Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley would shut things down in the ninth inning because the Phillies really hadn’t given anyone any reason to believe they had a rally in them.  And yet, what a rally it was.  Rhys Hoskins led off the inning with a strikeout, but then the rally commenced. JT Realmuto singled, followed by walks to Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos.  During the course of those two at-bats, it became evident that Helsley had lost command, notably with his triple-digit fastball. He had been dealing with an issue with the middle finger on his pitching hand recently, so it’s possible this was at least part of the problem. He remained in the game and hit Bohm with a pitch to bring home a run.  With a 2-1 lead, the Cardinals had no choice but to remove Helsley.  Rookie Andre Pallante came on and Jean Segura found a way through the infield.  Segura, before this game, had the most regular-season games played without a playoff appearance, among active players. Quite a thrill for his first one, huh?  The Phillies would tack on three more runs.  It was a six-run ninth despite scoring zero runs in the first eight innings. Ridiculous and amazing here on the first day of the playoffs.  Yepez looked like a hero Rookie Juan Yepez pinch hit for Corey Dickerson against Phillies lefty Jose Alvarado in the bottom of the seventh and came through on the first pitch of his playoff career:  The two-run shot was was the first pinch-hit, go-ahead homer in Cardinals history. It was also a bit of a “breathe a sigh of relief” moment for the Cardinals, as missed opportunities was the theme up to that point in what was previously a scoreless game. Nolan Arenado flew out to deep left-center in the bottom of the fourth. It looked like a home run off the bat and Arenado reacted like he thought it was gone after it ended up a 388-foot out. It was very well struck, carrying an expected batting average of .840.  Then, in the bottom of the sixth, Albert Pujols came up with two on and no out and grounded into a double play. He’s the career leader in double plays grounded into, but he also has plenty of RBI on the dossier, so it felt like a huge moment for the Phillies at the time.  Instead, Yepez came through and looked like the hero … until the ninth.  Quintana deals for Cardinals, again José Quintana was traded from the Pirates to the Cardinals in front of the deadline and he wasn’t exactly the sexiest acquisition, but he’s been nails for the Cards. He made 12 starts with the Cardinals and not one time did he allow more than two runs. He only gave up three runs total in his last six starts and going back to his time with the Pirates had a 1.67 ERA in his last 14 starts.  He went 5 1/3 innings on Friday, allowing only two singles and a walk. He only struck out three, but he induced weak contact all day and kept the ball on the ground, getting six groundouts. In the immortal words of The Dude, freaking “Quintana, that creep can roll, man.”  Wheeler does, too Not to be outdone, Phillies starter Zack Wheeler threw 6 1/3 scoreless frames, also allowing only two singles. He actually gave up some hard contact, but was the beneficiary of some good batted-ball fortune. Overall, though, it was a great, workman-like outing. He put his team in position to win the ballgame despite lackluster offense and that’s all you can ask from a starter.  The ninth-inning from the offense will rightfully get the headlines, but let’s not forget about the work from Wheeler. He was a huge part of this victory.  The Cardinals mounted a small rally in the ninth The Cardinals were able to score a run and then bring Yadier Molina to the plate with two runners on, meaning he represented the tying run with two outs. Phillies reliever Zach Eflin struck him out to end the threat.  Molina went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts in the game. He hit .214/.233/.302 during the regular season.  Next: Game 2 Saturday They’ll do it again in St. Louis on Saturday night with a local start time of 7:37, which is 8:37 ET and the last game of the day. The scheduled starting pitchers are Aaron Nola (11-13, 3.25) for the Phillies and Miles Mikolas (12-13, 3.29) for the Cardinals.  A Phillies win means they advance to face the Braves in the NLDS, starting in Atlanta on Tuesday. A Cardinals win keeps them alive and provides the entertainment of a Game 3 on Sunday.

Spreading The Word About Brain Health | News | Telluridenews.com – The Daily Planet https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/spreading-the-word-about-brain-health-news-telluridenews-com-the-daily-planet/ Mental health matters to Debi Butler. As founder of the grassroots organization Brain Health Now, Butler works with school districts, hospitals and organizations to end the stigma “by changing language and reframing the way we talk about mental illness,” she explained. Starting in Dubuque, Iowa, five years ago, Brain Health Now has expanded its reach to Wisconsin and Illinois. Butler, who splits time between Iowa and Telluride, would now like to bring the program to the box canyon. She’ll be at the Telluride Middle/High School to share information about Brain Health Now’s events Friday. “We just kind of sat back and wanted to see how things would go with the (Dubuque, Iowa) community at large. And today, we are working with school districts, the hospitals, businesses, organizations, you name it, and we really have got our community really transformed into using the words ‘brain health,’ which is helping others feel less stigmatized to be able to go get help,” Butler said. “We have providers telling us at the hospitals that if they use the words ‘brain health’ versus ‘mental illness’ or ‘mental health,’ then people are more apt to talk and feel more comfortable. Our whole kind of campaign is based around that the brain is an organ, and it can get sick to just like any other part of your body. She explained that the idea for Brain Health Now really started with her brother, Steve, who was diagnosed with schizophrenia 36 years ago after serving in the military. “Through the past 36 years we’ve been trying to help normalize his life in a world and society that didn’t understand him. That basis really kind of made us grow to where we are today,” Butler said. Keeping in touch with local officials, including Paul Major, throughout the pandemic helped Butler connect with the school district. On Friday, Butler will provide information to those interested, as well as Brain Health Now swag, in an effort to spread the word. She explained that the organization has provided support for about 20,000 students over the past two years in the Dubuque school district, where Brain Health Retreat Rooms have also proved to be popular recently. “We decided to start a concept called Brain Health Retreat Rooms. We have a nutrition area. We have a place that kids can sit to meditate or just kind of deescalate from a stressor that they’re experiencing during the day. If they have any kind of issues, they can talk to the brain health liaison, who by the way, is a full-time licensed counselor that is in the room from the moment the door opens to the moment the door closes. And then we have just really cool gadgets and widgets and techniques on how to de-escalate and regulate your emotions during the day. “So it’s anywhere from the football player who lost the game who feels very upset to somebody who has some deeper issues that they want to talk about. And these rooms are devised for students to show up for 15 to 20 minutes a day, not for counseling or full-on sessions, it’s just kind of drop in, sit and get your thoughts together, then they can go back to the classroom. They’ve been extremely, extremely successful in our area. And now we’re putting some rooms in the Wisconsin area. There’s probably 65 kids a day going through one of these rooms. At our school district, we’re on our fifth room right now that we’ve opened up. The school district is overwhelmed about how it’s been helping kids to really gather their emotions in a very positive way.” While there are currently no plans to open such a room in the Telluride school district, Butler is optimistic about beginning the Brain Health Now conversation locally. She’s also been in touch with Tri-County Health Network about potentially teaming up. “We just like to start organically and get to know each other and see how the kids respond to all this really cool swag and the conversation. It takes a community and the teachers to drive this, too. But that (student) age group of really takes onto this concept. They’re more open to talking about problems and what’s going on with their emotions, and like anybody, they need help to understand how to do that. You’re not taught how to, maybe, take a deep breathe you’re your heart’s racing. Or you’re taking a test or just uncomfortable because somebody did something to you earlier, and you didn’t know how to react. So I just think it’s a really well thought out way to help kids understand their emotions, which we all need to be taught that I don’t care what age you are.” For more information about Brain Health Now, visit brainhealth-now.org.

According to reports, the game was on the list of top 20 apps on the Apple App Store on its first release day.  Shiba Eternity is a free card strategy game. It is also a part of the SHIB burning strategy; transactions within the game are subject to token burns that help to reduce SHIB’s circulating supply.   With a reported 10,000 downloads on its first day, Shiba Eternity demonstrates impressive momentum. Continued adoption should spur the game even more, and reflect well on the price of SHIB as well.  IMPT: High-Value Crypto Investment  While SHIB looks to see some impressive gains, value-seeking investors can also consider IMPT, the widely-proclaimed greenest cryptocurrency, which allows individuals to join the war against climate change.  IMPT is the native token for the Impact Protocol, a blockchain project that seeks to use Blockchain technology in the fight against climate change. The protocol allows users to buy carbon credits, which can then be used to offset their carbon footprint. Its developers are looking to improve transparency and efficiency in the fight against rising global temperatures, meaning that IMPT could be the perfect coin for ESG-focused investors.  The crypto asset has already seen impressive investor demand, with a presale that raised over $500,000 on its first day. Report: Big U.S. Banks Are Stiffing Account Takeover Victims – Krebs On Security – Krebs On Security https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/report-big-u-s-banks-are-stiffing-account-takeover-victims-krebs-on-security-krebs-on-security/ When U.S. consumers have their online bank accounts hijacked and plundered by hackers, U.S. financial institutions are legally obligated to reverse any unauthorized transactions as long as the victim reports the fraud in a timely manner. But new data released this week suggests that for some of the nation’s largest banks, reimbursing account takeover victims has become more the exception than the rule. The findings came in a report released by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who in April 2022 opened an investigation into fraud tied to Zelle, the “peer-to-peer” digital payment service used by many financial institutions that allows customers to quickly send cash to friends and family. Zelle is run by Early Warning Services LLC (EWS), a private financial services company which is jointly owned by Bank of America, Capital One, JPMorgan Chase, PNC Bank, Truist, U.S. Bank, and Wells Fargo. Zelle is enabled by default for customers at over 1,000 different financial institutions, even if a great many customers still don’t know it’s there. Sen. Warren said several of the EWS owner banks — including Capital One, JPMorgan and Wells Fargo — failed to provide all of the requested data. But Warren did get the requested information from PNC, Truist and U.S. Bank. “Overall, the three banks that provided complete data sets reported 35,848 cases of scams, involving over $25.9 million of payments in 2021 and the first half of 2022,” the report summarized. “In the vast majority of these cases, the banks did not repay the customers that reported being scammed. Overall these three banks reported repaying customers in only 3,473 cases (representing nearly 10% of scam claims) and repaid only $2.9 million.” Importantly, the report distinguishes between cases that involve straight up bank account takeovers and unauthorized transfers (fraud), and those losses that stem from “fraudulently induced payments,” where the victim is tricked into authorizing the transfer of funds to scammers (scams). A common example of the latter is the Zelle Fraud Scam, which uses an ever-shifting set of come-ons to trick people into transferring money to fraudsters. The Zelle Fraud Scam often employs text messages and phone calls spoofed to look like they came from your bank, and the scam usually relates to fooling the customer into thinking they’re sending money to themselves when they’re really sending it to the crooks. Here’s the rub: When a customer issues a payment order to their bank, the bank is obligated to honor that order so long as it passes a two-stage test. The first question asks, Did the request actually come from an authorized owner or signer on the account? In the case of Zelle scams, the answer is yes. Trace Fooshee, a strategic advisor in the anti money laundering practice at Aite-Novarica, said the second stage requires banks to give the customer’s transfer order a kind of “sniff test” using “commercially reasonable” fraud controls that generally are not designed to detect patterns involving social engineering. Fooshee said the legal phrase “commercially reasonable” is the primary reason why no bank has much — if anything — in the way of controlling for scam detection. “In order for them to deploy something that would detect a good chunk of fraud on something so hard to detect they would generate egregiously high rates of false positives which would also make consumers (and, then, regulators) very unhappy,” Fooshee said. “This would tank the business case for the service as a whole rendering it something that the bank can claim to NOT be commercially reasonable.” Sen. Warren’s report makes clear that banks generally do not pay consumers back if they are fraudulently induced into making Zelle payments. “In simple terms, Zelle indicated that it would provide redress for users in cases of unauthorized transfers in which a user’s account is accessed by a bad actor and used to transfer a payment,” the report continued. “However, EWS’ response also indicated that neither Zelle nor its parent bank owners would reimburse users fraudulently induced by a bad actor into making a payment on the platform.” Still, the data suggest banks did repay at least some of the funds stolen from scam victims about 10 percent of the time. Fooshee said he’s surprised that number is so high. “That banks are paying victims of authorized payment fraud scams anything at all is noteworthy,” he said. “That’s money that they’re paying for out of pocket almost entirely for goodwill. You could argue that repaying all victims is a sound strategy especially in the climate we’re in but to say that it should be what all banks do remains an opinion until Congress changes the law.” UNAUTHORIZED FRAUD However, when it comes to reimbursing victims of fraud and account takeovers, the report suggests banks are stiffing their customers whenever they can get away with it. “Overall, the four banks that provided complete data sets indicated that they reimbursed only 47% of the dollar amount of fraud claims they received,” the report notes. How did the banks behave individually? From the report: -In 2021 and the first six months of 2022, PNC Bank indicated that its customers reported 10,683 cases of unauthorized payments totaling over $10.6 million, of which only 1,495 cases totaling $1.46 were refunded to consumers. PNC Bank left 86% of its customers that reported cases of fraud without recourse for fraudulent activity that occurred on Zelle. -Over this same time period, U.S. Bank customers reported a total of 28,642 cases of unauthorized transactions totaling over $16.2 million, while only refunding 8,242 cases totaling less than $4.7 million. -In the period between January 2021 and September 2022, Bank of America customers reported 81,797 cases of unauthorized transactions, totaling $125 million. Bank of America refunded only $56.1 million in fraud claims – less than 45% of the overall dollar value of claims made in that time. –Truist indicated that the bank had a much better record of reimbursing defrauded customers over this same time period. During 2021 and the first half of 2022, Truist customers filed 24,752 unauthorized transaction claims amounting to $24.4 million. Truist reimbursed 20,349 of those claims, totaling $20.8 million – 82% of Truist claims were reimbursed over this period. Overall, however, the four banks that provided complete data sets indicated that they reimbursed only 47% of the dollar amount of fraud claims they received. Fooshee said there has long been a great deal of inconsistency in how banks reimburse unauthorized fraud claims — even after the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CPFB) came out with guidance on what qualifies as an unauthorized fraud claim. “Many banks reported that they were still not living up to those standards,” he said. “As a result, I imagine that the CFPB will come down hard on those with fines and we’ll see a correction.” Fooshee said many banks have recently adjusted their reimbursement policies to bring them more into line with the CFPB’s guidance from last year. “So this is heading in the right direction but not with sufficient vigor and speed to satisfy critics,” he said. Seth Ruden is a payments fraud expert who serves as director of global advisory for digital identity company BioCatch. Ruden said Zelle has recently made “significant changes to its fraud program oversight because of consumer influence.” “It is clear to me that despite sensational headlines, progress has been made to improve outcomes,” Ruden said. “Presently, losses in the network on a volume-adjusted basis are lower than those typical of credit cards.” But he said any failure to reimburse victims of fraud and account takeovers only adds to pressure on Congress to do more to help victims of those scammed into authorizing Zelle payments. “The bottom line is that regulations have not kept up with the speed of payment technology in the United States, and we’re not alone,” Ruden said. “For the first time in the UK, authorized payment scam losses have outpaced credit card losses and a regulatory response is now on the table. Banks have the choice right now to take action and increase controls or await regulators to impose a new regulatory environment.” Sen. Warren’s report is available here (PDF). There are, of course, some versions of the Zelle fraud scam that may be confusing financial institutions as to what constitutes “authorized” payment instructions. For example, the variant I wrote about earlier this year began with a text message that spoofed the target’s bank and warned of a pending suspicious transfer. Those who responded at all received a call from a number spoofed to make it look like the victim’s bank calling, and were asked to validate their identities by reading back a one-time password sent via SMS. In reality, the thieves had simply asked the bank’s website to reset the victim’s password, and that one-time code sent via text by the bank’s site was the only thing the crooks needed to reset the target’s password and drain the account using Zelle. None of the above discussion involves the risks affecting businesses that bank online. Businesses in the United States do not enjoy the same fraud liability protection afforded to consumers, and if a banking trojan or clever phishing site results in a business account getting drained, most banks will not reimburse that loss. This is why I have always and will continue to urge small business owners to conduct their online banking affairs only from a dedicated, access restricted and security-hardened device — and preferably a non-Windows machine. For consumers, the same old advice remains the best: Watch your bank statements like a hawk, and i...

La La Anthony Admits Her 15-Year-Old Son Cooks For Her: ‘I Just Sit Back And Watch’ – Yahoo Life https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/la-la-anthony-admits-her-15-year-old-son-cooks-for-her-i-just-sit-back-and-watch-yahoo-life/ La La Anthony says she’s not much of a cook. Luckily, her son is. (Photo: Getty; designed by Quinn Lemmers) Because food connects us all, Yahoo Life is serving up a heaping plateful of table talk with people who are passionate about what’s on their menu in Deglazed, a series about food. Former MTV VJ La La Anthony is no stranger to sharing her life with the world. The television personality has hosted Total Request Live, shared her wedding and marriage to now ex-husband Carmelo Anthony in a VH1 reality franchise and acted in films like Two Can Play That Game and Think Like a Man. Anthony has done a bit of it all, but says there’s one thing you won’t find her doing any time soon: Cooking. “I do a lot of things, but cooking is not on that list,” she says, adding that while she’s no natural behind the stove, her 15-year-old son, Kiyan, has developed a love of cooking. “I kind of just sit back and watch, take it all in, relax, eat and have a good time,” she says. “It’s funny because he’s inherited more of the cooking gene than I have.” “He makes breakfast, eggs, french toast,” Anthony adds. “He does really well in the kitchen … it’s cool and it’s kind of funny being the one who can’t cook and having my son step in and be the one that can make a couple of cool dishes. I’m really proud of that.” But Kiyan isn’t the only one in the family who enjoys cooking. Anthony believes his command of the stove is a trait he picked up from extended family, who love nothing more than to share holiday meals together. “We’re Puerto Rican,” she says, “so during the holidays is when we all get together with the family. There’s so many of us, and we all get together to do traditional Spanish food that’s made specifically for the holidays.” On the menu? Coquito, a coconut-based alcoholic beverage similar to eggnog, and pasteles, a boiled dish similar to tamales. “It’s just been a tradition of ours for years and years,” she says of their holiday gathering, “and it’s a chance to get the whole family together, which is pretty cool.” Anthony says, while she doesn’t travel as much as she’d like, she’d learned to escape through a good tropical cocktail. (Photo: Bailey’s) Anthony says she loves to travel, but finds that lately, her trips are often work-related. She sometimes turns to making frozen drinks at home feel a bit more exotic. “I don’t get to take many vacations,” she says. “I’m working a lot. It’s something I’m trying to get better at. But if you can’t vacation, you can bring the vacation vibes to you.” The 40 year old spoke to Yahoo Life as part of her work promoting Bailey’s Colada liqueur, and says she uses the spirit when she needs an at-home tropical boost. “When you have the Bailey’s Colada, you feel like you’re relaxing,” she says. “It’s funny how drinks can have that effect on us — when you’re not able to go somewhere on vacation.” When she does travel, Anthony says she has one rule for exploring the destinations she visits. “I find hole-in-the-wall restaurants, not the fancy ones or the ones you find online,” she says. “I walk and find some hole-in-the-wall spot and say, ‘Give me what you’ve got — bring me some authentic Spanish and Puerto Rican food,’ and see what happens. You can’t go wrong.” Wellness, parenting, body image and more: Get to know the who behind the hoo with Yahoo Life’s newsletter. Sign up here.

Live Updates: Stocks Sink After Hotter-Than-Expected Jobs Report – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/live-updates-stocks-sink-after-hotter-than-expected-jobs-report-cnn/ ‘Strength across the board’: Romans breaks down the September jobs report 01:26 Friday’s jobs report showed the US economy added 263,000 jobs in September – a respectable number, but slower than in past months. The Federal Reserve is rooting for a slowdown. That will help take some of the air out the the ballooning economy that has, in part, sent inflation surging. Stocks fell as investors were looking for a weaker-than-expected jobs total. September came in slightly hotter than forecast. President Biden’s announcement Thursday of a federal pardon for simple marijuana possession lit up (sorry not sorry) shares of several cannabis stocks and ETFs — but the contact high was short-lived. Canopy Growth (CGC), Cronos (CRON) and the AdvisorShares Pure US Cannabis ETF (MSOS) all enjoyed stock bumps at first. But reality seemed to set in on Friday, as investors realized that a pardon isn’t the same thing as decriminalization. The major cannabis stocks and ETFs all plunged Friday. While more states have legalized recreational and/or medical marijuana, federal laws still prohibit the use, sale and possession of pot. Until that changes, cannabis stocks may have limited upside. It didn’t help that one pot stock, Tilray (TLRY), reported a loss Friday and sales that missed forecasts. Tilray plunged 16%, following a 30% Biden-supplied boost Thursday. TGIF? Not this F. Stocks continued their swoon late Friday afternoon, with the Dow plunging more than 650 points, or 2.2%. All 30 Dow stocks were in the red. The S&P 500 was down 2.8%. Tech stocks really took it on the chin, with the Nasdaq Composite plunging nearly 4%. The three indexes are all still up about 1% to 2% this week, however, thanks to big rallies Monday and Tuesday. Remember those ginormous market rallies from Monday and Tuesday? Ancient history. Stocks are still up about 2% for the week thanks to those big rallies, but the major indexes took a big tumble Friday after the jobs report reignited worries about more big interest rate hikes from the Federal Reserve. The CNN Business Fear & Greed Index is once again showing signs of Extreme Fear as well. Concerns about Corporate America’s profits didn’t help matters. Chip giant AMD (AMD) plunged more than 10% after warning that sales would take a hit due to slowing demand for personal computers. And denim wasn’t in fashion on Wall Street Friday. Levi Strauss (LEVI) tumbled 9% after the company said a strong dollar was eating into sales. The Dow was down nearly 450 points, or 1.5% in midday trading. The S&P 500 fell 2%. The Nasdaq Composite dipped nearly 3%. A woman shops for groceries in Washington, D.C., on August 19. Sarah Silbiger/Reuters Americans are still getting a decent sized bump in their weekly paychecks. Wages rose 5% in September over the past year, according to Friday’s jobs report. The problem is that the pace of inflation is still higher than that. In other words, shopping for stuff like groceries and paying monthly rent takes a huge bite out of that higher compensation. The Federal Reserve wants to see wage growth slow. If that happens, the hope is that companies will be less likely to keep raising consumer prices at a breakneck pace. For one, these businesses won’t have as much pressure on their bottom line from paying higher salaries. And companies also will have to realize that if their customer has less in their pocket, price increases may backfire and lead to lower demand. Consumer prices surged 8.3% year-over-year in August. The government will report CPI numbers for September next week. Economists are expecting a slight slowdown, to 8.1%. The Fed (and American shoppers) would love to see that number fall even further. The sooner the better. US stocks opened lower on Friday as investors digested a September jobs report that came in hotter than expected.  The U.S. economy added 263,000 jobs in September, higher than analyst estimates of 250,000. The unemployment rate came in at 3.5%, down from 3.7% in August. Strong employment data indicates that the Federal Reserve will continue with its aggressive interest rate hikes to cool the economy and fight persistently high inflation, causing economic pain.  The Dow fell by 320 points, or 1.1%, on Friday morning. The S&P 500 was down 1.5%. The Nasdaq Composite was 2% lower. The Marriner S. Eccles Federal Reserve Board Building is seen on September 19 in Washington, DC.  (Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images) The September jobs numbers were probably strong enough to keep the Federal Reserve on track to (chant like a high school cheerleader) be aggressive, be be aggressive with regards to rate hikes. According to fed funds futures on the CME, investors are now pricing in a more than an 80% chance of a fourth straight three-quarters of a percentage point hike at the Fed’s November 2 meeting. That’s up from about a 57% probability of another 75 basis point hike a week ago and just a little more than 1% chance a month ago. What’s more, traders are now betting that there’s about a 15% probability of yet another three-quarter point rate increase at the Fed’s December 14 meeting. The market was pricing in zero chance of that happening only a week ago. It’s no wonder then that stocks are sliding Friday following the jobs report. (Mary Altaffer/AP) Investors were less than pleased after September’s job totals came in a bit stronger than expected. With 263,000 jobs added to the US economy last month, the Fed’s rate hikes may not be having the slowdown effect policymakers had hoped for. The Fed was hoping that a long series of historic rate hikes would slow down the economy and bring inflation lower. But the job market remains stubbornly robust, which means the Fed has more room to keep hiking rates. Rate hikes eat into corporate profits, which has sent stocks sinking sharply in 2022. Dow futures fell 140 points or 0.5%. S&P 500 futures were down 0.8%. Nasdaq futures were 1.3% lower. The fever hasn’t broken yet for America’s employment market. The economy added 263,000 jobs in September, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Friday. That’s slightly higher than economists’ estimates of 250,000, according to Refinitiv. While still a robust headline number, it is the second consecutive month of falling totals, pointing to a labor market slowdown. The unemployment rate fell back to 3.5% from 3.7%. Ahead of another consequential jobs report, stock futures remained relatively unchanged. Investors are likely hoping for a subdued jobs report. That could mean that the Fed has less room to keep hiking rates by historic levels in its fight against inflation. Dow futures were up 25 points, or 0.1%. S&P 500 futures fell 0.1%. Nasdaq futures fell 0.4%. US oil rose 0.9% to $89 a barrel. Average US gas prices rose to $3.89 a gallon. When the Bureau of Labor Statistics releases its latest monthly jobs report at 8:30 am ET, all eyes will be on whether the labor market is showing signs of loosening up – one of many crucial factors that will help the Federal Reserve determine its next steps in its fight against decades-high inflation. The US economy is forecast to have added 250,000 jobs in September, which would be the lowest monthly jobs gain since December 2020. The unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 3.7%, according to Refinitiv estimates. August jobs data already indicated that the historically tight labor market has loosened by a notch. The jobs report for that month found that America added 315,000 positions, a much lower level than the 512,000 average job gains over the past 12 months. The number of open positions also fell, sinking by 1.1 million, the largest monthly decline outside of the pandemic, according to the Jobs Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released on Tuesday. Read more If Friday’s headline number comes in above 250K, Wall Street may read that as a sign the Fed is going to have to keep raising interest rates, adding to already-significant strain across financial markets. If it comes in well below 250K, you might see some renewed optimism that the Fed’s policies are starting to have their intended effect, and it may not need to keep inflicting pain on the economy. It’s hard to overstate just how delicate the situation is. In fact, just today the IMF’s managing director, Kristalina Georgieva, described the world as being in a period of “historic fragility” after a torrent of economic shocks over the last two-and-a-half years, from the pandemic to the war in Ukraine. That’s why the Fed’s decisions are being so closely scrutinized. When the Fed raises rates as aggressively as it has in the past several months, it creates painful ripple effects around the globe, pushing the US dollar’s value up and forcing other central banks to raise their own rates as well. All of which could tip the world’s biggest economies into a recession, the UN has warned. Investors and economists will be hyper-focused on wages in today’s jobs report. The Fed and others would be happy to see wage growth slow down. Less money in our wallets leaves us with less spending power, and when we stop buying things, prices go down. In theory, anyway. That’s just one part of the large and complicated inflation puzzle. In the last jobs report, wages were up 5.2% over the last 12 months. That’s historically high (woo!) but it doesn’t keep up with inflation, which is hovering around 8% year over year (boo!). Wages pose a particular conundrum for the Fed. It wants us to shop just a little less – but not a lot less. Unfortunately, there’s no magic formula for how much wages need to go down to make a dent. The risk of wages going down too much, too quickly raises the risk of falling into stagflation, which is as unpleasant as it sounds. Stagflation – a portmanteau of stag...

FCDs Paul Arriola Alan Velasco To Make Decision Day Return The Dallas Morning News
FCDs Paul Arriola Alan Velasco To Make Decision Day Return The Dallas Morning News
FCD’s Paul Arriola, Alan Velasco To Make Decision Day Return – The Dallas Morning News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/fcds-paul-arriola-alan-velasco-to-make-decision-day-return-the-dallas-morning-news/ By Jon Arnold 1:34 PM on Oct 7, 2022 CDT FRISCO — Sometimes, athletes are just like fans. FC Dallas winger Paul Arriola wasn’t able to be on the field for Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rapids and watched the 1-0 loss on TV like most FCD fans aside from the few dozen in the stands at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. “Yeah, ESPN Plus,” Arriola grumbled. “Stressed. It’s a real shitty feeling to be on the sidelines and not be a help for the team.” If it can come at a good time, the one-game suspension he received for getting a red card worked out well for Arriola, who linked up with his wife and mother-in-law in Southern California after returning from international duty with the U.S. men’s national team. Still, he would’ve much preferred to be on the field. Arriola’s fellow winger Alan Velasco has gotten used to tuning in from home as well. After suffering a thigh injury at the start of the month, the 20-year-old hasn’t played since a Sept. 3 victory over Minnesota United. When FCD plays Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, however, things will be back in balance. FCD’s starting wingers should be back on the field where they belong with fans able to watch them and enjoy their performance. Arriola will return from suspension and Velasco is eligible for the match after returning to full training. “You go a week and a half without a game and all the sudden you’re like a kid ready for Christmas,” Arriola said. “I was really excited for this week to start to get back out there, train with the guys. Being at full health and having energy, there’s excitement. This is our time. We have to be able to take advantage of the amazing results that went our way.” That includes Sunday’s game, which saw the Houston Dynamo knock off Nashville SC, meaning FCD needs only a point from the regular season finale against Sporting Kansas City to clinch the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference and the first-round home game that comes with it. Having his starting wingers back for the Decision Day contest and for the playoffs is a huge boost for Nico Estévez. The FCD manager had to get creative with his team selection, handing Kalil ElMedkhar his first MLS start and later in the game against the Rapids asking midfielder Sebastian Lletget to push out to the wing to see if he could generate more attack out wide. “It’s always important for players who are having good years and give the team quality, experience, competitiveness [to be] ready,” Estévez said. “I’m really happy with the players who had to play in their place. They did a good job, even though we weren’t lucky enough to win, but they did well. “Now that everyone is available, that competition increases. We saw it in training today. Everyone wants to play, and that’s great for a manager because you know that anyone who goes in is going to do well.” Those contributions from other players may mean only a cameo for Velasco as he continues to work back from his injury, but anything out wide should help. Estévez was pleased with what other players provided, but the team has clearly been at its best when forward Jesus Ferreira is able to slot between Arriola and Velasco. Five of Ferreira’s 18 goals this season have been directly assisted by one of the wingers, while three more having one of the wingers involved in the first or second ‘goal-creating event,’ which is an offensive action leading to a shot. Ferreira has returned the favor, with four assists to Arriola this season and a second goal-creating event on Velasco’s August goal against the San Jose Earthquakes. Ferreira was on the field last week, not watching on TV, but he also had a tough task, asked to play the full match at altitude after returning from international duty just days before. “Anyone who’s on the field, we all believe in each other, but it’s good to have everybody healthy, everybody on the roster back,” midfielder Edwin Cerrillo said. “We’re going to take this week to compete and put the best team out there because we want to achieve that goal of being third.” It will be all the easier with the team’s best wide attackers once again warming up on the field for the game rather than getting the stream set up. Bitcoin Whales Accumulating BTC At Current Prices – What Do They Know? – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-whales-accumulating-btc-at-current-prices-what-do-they-know-cryptonews/ Source: Santiment/Twitter Bitcoin (BTC) whales are again accumulating BTC, with more and more traders now asking themselves what these whales know that the rest of us don’t. According to data from the crypto analytics platform Santiment, the so-called Bitcoin whales, defined as wallet addresses holding between 100 BTC and 10,000 BTC, have added a total of 46,173 BTC to their holdings since September 27. In a tweet published earlier this week, Santiment called the increase a “sustained accumulation” by whales and noted that this has been “a rarity in 2022.” The firm added that the increase in BTC holdings has come as large holdings of the stablecoin Tether (USDT) have dropped. The finding indicates that some of the largest players in the Bitcoin ecosystem are using stablecoins to add to their BTC holdings. This also means that any price rallies seen in recent days have most likely been stablecoin-driven, without support from a significant level of fiat inflows. It is widely believed in the crypto community that large inflows of fiat currency into Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies is necessary for a new bull market to establish itself in a sustainable way. Still, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that whales are among the first to position themselves for potential future rallies in the Bitcoin price. As a result, the positioning seen in the past few days could be a sign that the wealthiest Bitcoin holders are now betting that macroeconomic conditions will improve going forward and that this will ultimately help BTC move higher. Meanwhile, the news that whales are now accumulating BTC comes after Santiment in late September reported that whale holdings of Bitcoin had dropped to the lowest level in 29 months, making up only 45.72% of the circulating BTC supply. In a tweet at the time, the firm attributed the fall in whale investment interest to “fears of inflation and a world recession […].”

PCO News – PCT Online https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pco-news-pct-online/ Rose Pest Solutions is sponsoring the new Honey Bee Hideout exhibit at Kohl Children’s Museum in Glenview, Ill., where children can learn about the importance of honeybees through interactive play. A working beehive and a beekeeper have been added to the museum. The beehive is stationed outside, connected to a closed-circuit TV so children can see honeybees in action. “Everything at Kohl includes learning through play and interactivity,” said Stephanie Bynum, vice president of programs at Kohl. “The Honey Bee Hideout will include a larger-than-life honeycomb structure where kids can take colorful ‘pollen’ samples from a ‘flower’ and fly it to the hive.” Jessy Frasier (left), owner of First Mark Pest Control and Mike Houston (right), owner of Suregard Termite & Pest Services. Dallas-based Sureguard Termite & Pest Services announced the merger and acquisition of First Mark Pest Control, a family-owned company serving the Dallas-Forth Worth area. Jessy Frasier, second-generation PCO and owner of First Mark, said, “My dad started in pest control around 1994. I went with Sureguard because they seemed to have the same values and concerns about customer service and care as my dad had instilled in me. The merger was much easier and quicker than I imagined. I assumed the transition would take months to complete, and we were done in just a couple days.” Sureguard is a third-generation pest management firm owned by the Houton family. First Mark is its 19th acquisition since 2015. All U Need Pest Control, Fort Myers, Fla., and Native Pest Management, Margate, Fla., were named to the winning list of Nextdoor’s 6th Annual Neighborhood Favorites. Winners were determined based on the number of likes and recommendations a local business received on Nextdoor over the past year across various categories. Kyle Selbach, All U Need Pest Control director of operations, said, “This honorary award came as a surprise to us, and we couldn’t be more pleased knowing our customers have referred us an excessive amount of times to their neighbors. An award like this proves that prioritizing customer service and high satisfaction is ideal in the consumers eyes. We couldn’t do this without the entire team. From the sales representatives to the service technicians and the customer service representatives, they all deserve to pat themselves on the back for this award.” Luke Lewis, president of Native Pest Management, said, “Local communities are incredibly important to us. As a fairly new company — started in 2015 — it’s an honor for an established city like Margate to consider us a Neighborhood Favorite. We care about our customers, and we want them to know it.” Native Pest Management also ranked No. 1,568 on the annual Inc. 5000 list, a ranking of the fastest-growing private companies in the country. This is Native Pest Management’s second consecutive year making the list, with a three-year revenue growth of 278 percent. Native is No. 127 in Florida, No. 117 in Consumer Products & Services and No. 58 in the Miami area.

Joan Campbell | Obituary | The Norman Transcript – Norman Transcript https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/joan-campbell-obituary-the-norman-transcript-norman-transcript/ Joan L. Campbell passed away on October 3, 2022, in Vancouver, Washington at the age of 85. She was born on January 31, 1937, to Florence and Robert August Messler in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Joan graduated from Tulsa University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and the University of Oklahoma with a Masters in Social Work. She began her postsecondary academic journey as a scholarship student at Tarkio College in Tarkio, Missouri. After two years, she returned to Tulsa and continued her studies where she met her future husband Edward E. Campbell of Muskogee, Oklahoma. They married on June 11, 1960 and had two children, Karen Campbell of Everett, WA (age 56) and Jennifer Campbell Young of Monrovia, CA (age 53). After graduating from the School of Social Work, she supported her growing family while Edward finished law school. Shortly after his graduation they moved to Duncan, OK, in 1966, residing there for twenty-five years. Joan touched the lives of many through her dedication to volunteerism and social services. She continued her commitment to improving the lives of others as a volunteer and social worker in Stephens County Oklahoma. Joan was a stalwart supporter of Christians’ Concern, during her time in Duncan, and enjoyed helping the ecumenical community address the needs of those with limited means. When her family moved to London, England from 1974-1978, Joan volunteered as a social worker in some of the most disadvantaged areas of the city. After moving to Norman, she joined a Women’s Church Circle, at the First Presbyterian Church of Norman. The group ministered to people in need throughout the community and helped manage a half-way house for families in crises. Joan was devoted to her children and believed strongly in education. She and Edward shared their love of musicals and theater, which they passed onto their daughters. Joan made sure her children were able to experience the many wonderous cultural experiences available in London, which later influenced their decisions to explore new places and travel widely. After Edward retired from the Haliburton Services Company, he and Joan moved to Norman, OK, where they lived until 2017, when they moved to Vancouver, WA to be closer to their daughters. Despite their move to Washington, Joan remained a devoted Sooners fan and Oklahoma continued to have a special place in her heart. She was an “Okie” through and through especially during basketball season when she got to watch her beloved Sooners play a game she dearly enjoyed. Joan had a lovely voice and sung in the church choir while living in Duncan. She soon joined a singing group after moving to Vancouver where she made many new friends who became part of her new family. They performed regularly at the retirement community where she and Edward lived to the delight of the residents there. Other hobbies included cooking, sewing, reading with a particular fondness for novels by John le Carré, knitting, and being a devoted grandmother to her two grandchildren whom she visited often in California. Joan also loved dogs especially terriers. Although she was unable to have a dog when she moved to Vancouver, she was the best friend to every dog she met. Joan is survived by her children, Karen Campbell and Jennifer Campbell Young, her grandchildren, Grace Young (age 14) and Elizabeth Young (age 12). Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., October 10, 2022, at the Park Hill Cemetery with the Revered Theodore Buck, Columbia Presbyterian Church, officiating. Memorials or donations may be made to Clark County Food Bank in Vancouver, WA; the Colombia Presbyterian Church of Vancouver, and the University of Oklahoma. Top 10 Best Cities To Visit On A Cannabis Vacation – Business Insider https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/top-10-best-cities-to-visit-on-a-cannabis-vacation-business-insider/ Savanna Durr/Insider Upgraded Points ranked the best US cities to visit for a ‘canna-cation’ based on 26 factors. Cannabis tourism is a $17 billion industry, reports say. Activities include ganja yoga, paint-and-puff, and a cannabis-infused dinner. Cannabis may not be legal in every US state, but the places that permit recreational use have carved out a unique corner in the travel industry. Weed-infused tourism is a $17 billion industry despite only being legal in 19 states. As people become more comfortable experimenting with it, we’re seeing more weed-friendly travel guides for those who want to experience the high life. Upgraded Points — a site dedicated to information on all things travel and reward programs — ranked the best and worst places for a “canna-cation” based on 26 factors including cost and weed friendly activities. On Thursday, President Biden moved to pardon thousands with federal marijuana convictions and encourage states to follow suit. If you’re feeling more empowered to dive into the world of cannabis, here are the top 10 best cities for a ganja getaway, according to Upgraded Points. 10. Las Vegas, Nevada Courtesy of Supreme Cannabis Lounge Although the use of weed is prohibited in public places, Las Vegas still managed to crack the top 10 best cities. Travelers can find activities and places to stay that permit the use of cannabis — including cannabis bus tours and smoking at the Las Vegas location of popular chain Topgolf. Overall score out of 50: 32.19 9. San Jose, California Courtesy of Purple Lotus Like another California city on the list, San Jose’s location in the Bay Area means you’re just an hour away from San Francisco. You’ve heard of food delivery services, but in San Jose you can get weed delivered to your door. Overall score out of 50: 32.50 8. Colorado Springs, Colorado Courtesy of The Painter’s Pot Colorado According to Upgraded Points, Colorado is the third cheapest place to buy an ounce of marijuana for an average cost of $241.75. It’s no wonder three Colorado cities have landed on the list — including Colorado Springs. The creative weed user might enjoy painting some “pothead pottery.” Overall score out of 50: 33.95 7. Henderson, Nevada Courtesy of The Source+ Henderson landed itself in the top 10 thanks to its 118 weed-friendly Airbnb listings per 100,000 people, according to Upgraded Points. Like others on the list, its wide offering of affordable lodging where weed is allowed earned it the seventh spot. And, of course, there are multiple local dispensaries to visit. Overall score out of 50: 34.89 6. Scottsdale, Arizona Courtesy of Higher Talks Located just 13 miles outside of Phoenix, Scottsdale, offers cheaper accommodations with a proximity to activities, including a cannabis-infused dinner with private chefs. Overall score out of 50: 35.45 5. Portland, Oregon Courtesy of Yoga on Yamhill According to Upgraded Points, Portland offers a wide variety of fun that doesn’t just allow the use of cannabis, but also includes it in the activity. Yoga enthusiasts can enjoy ganja yoga where each session begins with marijuana use followed by a yoga class for all levels. Wake-and-bake drag shows also are not to be missed if you’re in Portland, Upgrade Points says.  Overall score out of 50: 36.09 4. Boulder, Colorado Courtesy of Colorado Cannabis Tours The city of Boulder describes itself as a “perfect balance of urban and outdoors.” In addition to being able to enjoy a joint while you hike, it offers cannabis tours of local dispensaries for those who want a look behind the scenes of the industry. Overall score out of 50: 36.70 3. Oakland, California Courtesy of Visit Oakland Coming in at number three, Oakland offers its very own Cannabis Trail — a map of cannabis-friendly businesses and activities for visitors. Situated in the Bay Area of California, the city has proximity to San Francisco and the wine country as well. According to Upgraded Points, Oakland is the cheapest city for a four-day cannabis vacation for one person. Overall score out of 50: 36.90 2. Portland, Maine Courtesy of Maine Day Ventures Like Henderson, Portland, Maine, finds itself on this traveler’s list for its many 420-friendly stays. Activities include a walking tour for the cannabis curious and many “bud and breakfasts.” Overall score out of 50: 37.68 1. Denver, Colorado Courtesy of Puff Pass Paint Denver ranks number one on Upgraded Points’ list by quite a few points. According to the site, cannabis-friendly accommodations are much more affordable compared to cities like Los Angeles or Reno, Nevada. Those planning a trip to Colorado’s capital can add a paint-and-puff class to their itinerary if they want to paint while enjoying marijuana. Agreement Signed Between City Of Weyburn And SHA – DiscoverWeyburn.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/agreement-signed-between-city-of-weyburn-and-sha-discoverweyburn-com/ The City of Weyburn and the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) recently signed a five-year agreement, outlining the details of a rehabilitation program at the Credit Union Spark Centre.   The City will help facilitate the SHA’s Chronic Disease Management – Quality Improvement Program.  “This new partnership is exciting for the City of Weyburn,” Andrew Crowe, director of Leisure Services said. “Providing a space to improve the health and well-being of the community is a priority for the Leisure Services department. The Credit Union Spark Centre is a wonderful asset to the community, and this partnership is another example of how the new facility will benefit the various demographics within our community and surrounding area.”    Representatives from the SHA were at the Spark Centre yesterday to talk about the new program.  Dana Renwick, a Nurse Educator with Primary Healthcare said since partnering with the City they have revamped the chronic disease programming that they had before.  “Now we’re calling it all Healthy Living Program, and the first program we started with is cardiac rehabilitation,” she said. “We get a referral out of Regina, someone may have had a heart attack or some sort of heart event and then we book them in with our program and they have a one-on-one with me and I would provide education and just kind of clear them for exercise and things like that.”  “Saskatchewan Health Authority is dedicated to providing team-based primary care through our health networks to improve the health of Saskatchewan people,” Trevor Tessier, director of Primary Health Care for Weyburn Primary Health Services said. “We’re grateful to collaborate with the City of Weyburn to deliver this work.”  Tessier added the sessions focus on mental health and stress management associated with living with a chronic disease.  “The intent of the Healthy Living Program and what we do is to empower the participants within, so they have the tools to deal with their chronic disease.”  The pre-registered clients are elderly patients or have chronic conditions.   The agreement allows these participants to use the Credit Union Spark Centre as a safe space where they can exercise with their healthcare team encouraging them by their side.  A $7,500 recumbent fitness trainer was purchased through the collaboration. The Weyburn Credit Union Community Fund provided $5,000, and the Grow Your Community Grant from the South East Sport, Culture and Recreation District gave $1,000. Anyone can use the fitness trainer, which is located on the second floor of the Credit Union Spark Centre.  Facilitators of the chronic disease management program can utilize the centre’s multi-purpose room, first aid room, mini gym, and exercise track.

This Pregnant Mom Accidentally Let Her Toddler Watch Her IPad All Night & Reddit Gave Her The Sweetest Encouragement – Yahoo Life https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/this-pregnant-mom-accidentally-let-her-toddler-watch-her-ipad-all-night-reddit-gave-her-the-sweetest-encouragement-yahoo-life/ All moms mess up sometimes, and I’ll be the first to admit it. I’ve yelled at my kids in moments of sheer frustration, forgotten to attend an event for my Kindergartner, bribed my kids with candy and screen time — it happens. One mom on Reddit recently shared a parenting mistake she made with her toddler, and our hearts go out to her. It’s so hard to try to be a perfect mom all the time! In the Parenting subreddit, a mom shared her story of how she “messed up so bad” last night. More from SheKnows A Woman Who Fell Into Default ‘Mom Duties’ With Her Partner & His Kid is Asking Reddit if She Made the Right Move “I’m 13 weeks pregnant and last night I was so tired I crawled into bed with my 3-year-old and told her we could watch a show on the iPad for bit,” the mom wrote. “We started watching PJ Masks and i fell asleep. Woke up at 5 am and she was still awake and still watching the iPad.” Yikes! Her toddler probably thought she hit the jackpot — hours of unmonitored, uninterrupted screen time! What kid wouldn’t stay up all night to soak it up? Click here to read the full article. “I can’t believe it. Today is going to f*ck with her sleep schedule so bad. Ugh,” the mom added. The mom probably felt awful when she woke up and saw her toddler still awake, so she wrote this quick post as a way to vent. Little did she know, Reddit would come through with the most surprisingly helpful words of encouragement. “If that’s your worst mess up, you’re doing great!” one person wrote, before offering some helpful advice. “Put the iPad/show on a timer next time if you’re able so if the kiddo is still awake when the show turns off they will either go to bed or wake you up and you can decide what to do next. :)” What a compassionate, helpful comment. We understand needing to turn to the iPad to help your toddler fall asleep (pregnancy exhaustion on top of regular mom exhaustion is so, so hard!), and this person offered a creative solution that would help monitor screen time and let the mom get some rest. We love to see it! Others were nice in their suggestions too. “Or set a nightly alarm for all your devices twenty minutes before her bedtime,” one person wrote. “Best case scenario you just swipe it away, worst case scenario you are saved from any extended snuggle naps.” Another suggested “turning the brightness down all the way” and putting the sound on mute to put kids to sleep. Someone else found “on Netflix you can also make it go super slow, I set ours to half speed on Cocomelon. Everything is basically a lullaby.” Genius! Other sympathetic parents shared their experiences with iPad use during pregnancy. “My second pregnancy was so brutal – nonstop nausea and puking and severe pelvic floor pain during a heatwave,” one mom wrote. “I spent a lot of afternoons sleeping on my bed while my four-year-old watched Paw Patrol on his iPad. I felt like an absolute garbage mom. He later told me he had the best summer ever because we got to snuggle and watch tv together on the bed. You’re doing your best and your kiddo totally fell asleep at one point. Good luck! You’ve got this.” Others agreed that it’s likely the 3-year-old did get some sleep throughout the night. “Nah, a 3-year-old would eventually crash,” one person wrote. “When my kids were that age they’d fall asleep in the weirdest places and poses because they’d just crash. I highly doubt a 3-year-old could pull an all nighter.” “100% she just woke up before you, that’s all,” someone else said. “Even if she hadn’t, this is one night, one time. Kid was always safe and happy. Could have been a lot worse.” At the end of the day, parents are all just doing the best we can, and one TV night (even if it’s all night!) won’t change anything. “Oh honey. Lol, she will be fine. Just bump up nap time a little then get her to run herself out afterwards,” one person wrote. “Give yourself a break, you’re pregnant and tired I’m sure. This isn’t a f*ck up, it’s ok. One night shouldn’t mess up her schedule.” Someone else wrote, “You are doing just fine as a parent. She is going to remember it as the best night of her life spent with her cool momma who let her watch PJ Masks ALL night! Trust me, it’s going to be a story she tells for many years … You are doing great Momma!” In the wise words of Hannah Montana, “Everybody makes mistakes. Lakers News: How Long Will Crypto.com Be Able To Sponsor Crypto.com Arena? – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/lakers-news-how-long-will-crypto-com-be-able-to-sponsor-crypto-com-arena-sports-illustrated/ Are the Lakers’ new arena sponsors Crypto.com, a cryptocurrency exchange platform, already in trouble? Less than a year after Crypto.com shelled out an estimated $700 million for the naming rights to the home venue for the Lakers, Clippers, Sparks and Kings in downtown Los Angeles, it appears that the company is facing a tenuous long-term future. The locale had been named the Staples Center since its debut in 1999. Staples as a brand now is a mere shell of its former self, so a change in sponsorships did feel in retrospect like it was en route. The switch to the glitzy crypto fad felt a bit risky, which has now proved to be an accurate appraisal. Asa Hiken of Ad Age reports that, thanks in part to some excessive spending to build brand awareness, Crypto.com reached an impressive tally of 50 million users right before the cryptocurrency market crashed and interest fizzled this past spring. Since then, the firm has “quietly downsized” or even tried to cancel several of its partnership deals. It has bailed on its previous arrangements with Angel City F.C., Twitch Rivals, and the UEFA Champions League. Scroll to Continue Crypto.com has reportedly lost 30-40% of its pre-crash workforce through layoffs and departures (but mostly layoffs), with sources telling Hiken that sum represents 2,000 employees. For now, the Venue Formerly Known As Staples Center remains Crypto.com Arena. Just how long that moniker will hold is now anyone’s guess, with what has proven to be a volatile market potentially on the precipice of further collapse. So how will Crypto.com respond to its cutbacks? Has the bubble fully burst, or is this moment merely a blip? With a lot of layoffs reportedly happening in and around its marketing department, will we be seeing more “We going to the league” ads with Lakers All-Star forward LeBron James talking to a creepy digital interpretation of his younger self?  We can only hope so, dear readers.

President Joseph Biden and the then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson committed at Carbis Bay in June 2021 to develop a new landmark bilateral Technology Partnership, to enable a new era of strategic cooperation and protect our technology advantage.  Building on that strong foundation, the United States and the United Kingdom announced today the launch of a new Comprehensive Dialogue on Technology and Data.  The annual dialogue will be led by senior level representatives in the U.S. Departments of State and Commerce and the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.  In the coming year, the Dialogue will focus on three areas:  Data, Critical and Emerging Technologies, and Secure and Resilient Digital Infrastructure. The United States and the United Kingdom recognize the strategic importance of technology to our prosperity and security and to promoting and protecting our shared democratic values globally.  This commitment has led to deepening collaboration on shared priorities including promotion of cross-border data flows and support for privacy-enhancing technologies; semiconductors; supply chain vulnerabilities; telecom supply chain diversification; ensuring responsible development and deployment of AI; and planning for closer cooperation on quantum information sciences and technology. Colquitt Regional Offering Advanced Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Technology – Moultrie Observer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/colquitt-regional-offering-advanced-plastic-reconstructive-surgery-technology-moultrie-observer/ MOULTRIE, Ga. — Colquitt Regional Medical Center and Sterling Physician Group’s Dr. Tracey Bastiaans recently incorporated two pieces of state-of-the-art technology, the Fraxel Laser and VASER Ultrasonic System, into her practice at Sterling Group Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. The Fraxel laser is a treatment that targets aging and sun-damaged skin with microscopic laser columns that penetrate deep into the skin to expedite the body’s remodeling of collagen, according to a press release from Colquitt Regional. One of the major benefits of the Fraxel is that it only treats a fraction of the targeted tissue at a time, so it leaves the surrounding tissue intact, which promotes very rapid healing. This particular laser is used to treat fine lines and wrinkles, surface scarring, pigmentation, sun damage, and actinic keratosis, and other skin-related issues.  Bastiaans performs the Fraxel treatment in-clinic. It is non-invasive, not requiring any injections or IVs. Each session takes approximately 20-25 minutes and on average, a typical treatment regimen includes three to five sessions spaced about four weeks apart. Results are immediate and progressive over the course of the treatment regimen, with optimal results being visible within two to three months, the hospital said. “Dr. Bastiaans is highly trained and offers a number of treatments and procedures that will benefit many patients,” said Colquitt Regional President and CEO Jim Matney. “We are continually evaluating our services and how we can better serve our community. These two new pieces of technology she has implemented are highly advanced. We are very proud to have her here in Moultrie and as a part of the Colquitt Regional staff.” In addition to the Fraxel laser, Bastiaans is also performing a new, alternative liposuction procedure called VASERlipo, the hospital said. This device is ultrasound guided and is used to eliminate large areas of fat while also contouring the body. The VASER can be used to remove fat in areas such as the jowls, chin and neck, abs, hips or love handles, male and female breasts, arms, back, buttocks or thighs, knees, calves, or ankles. It also allows multiple areas to be treated in a single procedure.  During a VASER procedure, the area being treated is filled with a medicated solution. The fat cells are then treated with ultrasound energy and are removed from the body through a gentle suction process. The surrounding tissues are left intact, giving the patient smoother contours with less pain and recovery time than traditional liposuction. “The Fraxel and VASER have been revolutionary for both clinicians and patients,” said Bastiaans. “Many people think of these treatments as purely aesthetic, and they can be, but they also help with functionality, as well as restoring confidence in patients. With the Fraxel, patients can have acne scars, precancerous spots, or other skin issues they have dealt with removed within just a few months. Patients who have had bariatric surgery can utilize the VASER to help take off excess fat and sculpt their body further.” Bastiaans, who joined the Sterling Physician Group team in September 2021, offers a wide variety of services, ranging from breast reconstruction and augmentation to body contouring, face lift, scar revision, trauma reconstruction, carpal tunnel release, ganglion cyst removal, Botox, fillers, and many others. After completing medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, Bastiaans completed a general surgery residency at Beaumont Health in Farmington Hills, Michigan, and furthered her training with a plastic surgery fellowship at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. “As a part of our commitment to provide the best healthcare possible, we are proud to bring physicians into this community who are forward thinking and stay in tune with the latest technology,” said Hospital Authority Chairman Richard E. Turner Jr. “Dr. Bastiaans is one of those physicians. From the moment she started her practice here, she has been keeping an eye on how she can continue to better serve her patients. We are proud to have her on our team.” For more information on the Fraxel and VASER, please contact the Colquitt Regional marketing department at 229-890-3552.

Yoni Barrios, 32, has been booked into the Clark County Detention Center after the attack Thursday. He is being detained on two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder with a deadly weapon, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced Friday. “This was an isolated incident. All evidence indicates Barrios acted alone and there are no outstanding suspects at this time,” said Deputy Chief James LaRochelle. #BREAKING: The suspect in today’s stabbings on Las Vegas Boulevard has been identified as 32-year-old Yoni Barrios. Police say Barrios killed two people and wounded six others in stabbings along the Las Vegas Strip. He was booked on two counts of murder and six counts of attempted murder late Thursday, Oct. 6, 2022. (Las Vegas Police Dept. via AP) Police located eight victims in the wake of the attack, one of whom was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Friday morning, another victim was pronounced dead at the University Medical Center, while three others are in critical condition and the last three are in stable condition, according to police. The identities of the victims have not yet been released by the police, but Maris Mareen Digiovanni, 30, and Brent Allan Hallett, 47, have since been identified as the two victims who were killed in the attack. Additionally, four showgirls outside the Wynn Casino were also attacked, according to the Daily Mail. The attack began when Barrios, who is not a resident of Las Vegas, told the showgirls he was a chef who wanted to take a photo with them. When the showgirls refused, the attack began, a woman who claimed that the showgirls worked for her told the outlet. Law enforcement officers were able to take the suspect into custody “very quickly” with the help of security partners, said Capt. Dori Koren. A “large kitchen knife” was also found at the scene, Koren said. The motive behind the attack is not yet known, and police are continuing to investigate the stabbings. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the victims’ identities, as well as the cause and manner of death, police said. Intel Facility Can Mean Additional Business For Stark County Companies – Canton Repository https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/intel-facility-can-mean-additional-business-for-stark-county-companies-canton-repository/ CANTON – Intel Corp. has begun construction in New Albany of what could become the company’s largest manufacturing site in the world. Even though it’s a two-hour drive, businesses in Stark County can expect to see benefits from the $20 billion project outside Columbus. That’s because it will be comparable to building a city, said Allen Thompson, vice president of U.S. government relations for Intel. More:Ohio agency poised to approve $650 million Intel tax break “There’s going to be a lot of different opportunities this investment creates,” Thompson said Wednesday during a program at the Canton Cultural Center for the Arts. Thompson was speaker for the monthly Lunch and Learn program offered by the Stark County Minority Business Association. Thompson told a full house in the Cable Recital Hall that Intel had decided by late fall of 2020 that it would build in Ohio. The ceremonial groundbreaking for the facility occurred in early September and that event showed Thompson what the project means to the region. The initial phase calls for two semiconductor plants in New Albany. It is expected to reach six, and possibly eight production facilities, Thompson said. Intel wants to staff the facilities will talented workers, so it’s investing $50 million to partner with schools around Ohio to prepare employees. More business news:Stark State College to create an artificial intelligence training program Businesses around the state also will have an opportunity to work with Intel, Thompson said. The corporation is spending money with more minority-owned businesses, and working with a diverse set of contractors and subcontractors, he said. Companies wanting to do business with Intel should do their research. “Learn us. Know what we have available,” Thompson said. As Intel builds, it’s anticipated that other companies — suppliers and vendors, as well as hotels and restaurants — will be building nearby. “We’re about to build a city,” Thompson said. Construction of the two initial facilities and installation of equipment will take roughly three years. Thompson said that if work proceeds on schedule, the first chips will be produced in 2026. The facility in New Albany is Intel’s first new pure manufacturing facility that Intel has built in 40 years, Thompson said. Intel selected Ohio because CEO Patrick Gelsinger believed it was the place where the company could meet its goals, he said. Wednesday’s program also included the graduation ceremony for the Minority Business Association’s second cohort in “Expanding Resources for All” (ERA) training program. The ERA 2022 class included 24 small business owners who completed workshops and worked with mentors in a 10-month program.
