October 2022 Rotherham Business News
October 2022 Rotherham Business News
October 2022 – Rotherham Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/october-2022-rotherham-business-news/ News: Why is Rotherham Council planning to fund Forge Island itself? If Rotherham Council decides to fund the Forge Island regeneration scheme itself, it will save nearly £50m compared to an externally funded deal drafted in 2018. Different routes to fund the key town centre project risk further delays and potentially losing key tenants such as Arc Cinemas. Rothbiz revealed recently that funding for the key town centre project was under review with the funding available to the Council’s delivery partner, Muse, for the delivery of Forge Island “significantly reduced.” Forge Island is a Council-owned site which sits between the River Don and South Yorkshire Navigation Canal. Led by Muse Developments, it will host a new leisure scheme with an 8-screen boutique style cinema, modern hotel, food and beverage (F&B) outlets and car parking. It is set to be completed in 2024. The Council selected Muse as the preferred partner in 2018 and signed a “Development Agreement for Lease.” Contracts have recently been updated for the scheme showing a price of £46.8m. Further council documents explain: “Very recent volatility of the financial markets and the challenge this may now pose to private funders providing up-front capital within the requirements previously agreed by the Council has resulted in Muse (in line with the Development Agreement for Lease) assessing delivery arrangements and proposing options for the Council to consider, including the Council acting as funder of the whole or part of the development.” Rising inflation has been cited and Muse was informed last month that the markets were not prepared to lend on the terms previously agreed. The Council’s cabinet is due to meet on October 17 where it will “choose from the full range of options for delivery including further supplementing or replacing what was expected to be privately raised capital with the Council’s own borrowing and capital resources.” The proposal for the Council to fund the scheme does not reduce the potential capital cost of the development, however, it does allow the Council to maintain the current projected development costs at the current secured prices. It also allows the Council to maintain the current third-party tenants (Arc Cinema, Travelodge and the recently announced restaurants via Thistle Group) that provide the ongoing revenue income to enable the Council to finance the project over the project life. New council documents show that the 2018 deal had the headlease, that would have been paid to the private sector funder, increasing with CPI (inflation) at 3-5%. This would be replaced by with the cost of the Council’s borrowing, financing costs, which do not inflate and can be structured across the life of the project in the most cost-effective way. Advertisement Council documents explain: “It is anticipated that based on current financial markets, that this option would save the Council around £49m over the life of the project. Due to the benefit of Council borrowing over the private sector funder headlease that would be subject to inflation.” The UK CPI rate of inflation hit 10.1% earlier in 2022. In 2018, before the UK left the EU, the global pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the rate was nearer 2%. The Council document concludes: “Given the changes in the financial markets that have negatively impacted the original proposal to secure private sector funding, the option of Council borrowing to fund the development becomes the most financial beneficial, stable and deliverable within the confines of the public purse and the Council’s delivery aims for the site.” Options for the Council funding the project include undergoing a full re-procurement but the authority says that this “would result in considerable delay to delivery, and the very high risk that scheme could not proceed at the current tendered price.” Similarly, a reduced procurement route “would not allow an alternative developer a reasonable opportunity to assemble and agree the components necessary for the scheme to be costed and delivered.” Another discounted option would be to adjust the terms of the development funding agreement with the funder through, for example, extending the term of the head-lease or increasing the initial head-lease rent. A direct award to Muse looks to be the desired option, indicated by recently published tender documents. The council is using a Voluntary Ex-Ante Transparency Notice (VEAT) to allow the market to challenge the decision to issue a contract to Muse without first having published a tender notice. Forge Island website Images: Muse / RMBC Read more… News: Xeros raises £7m Xeros Technology Group plc, the creator of technologies that reduce the impact of clothing on the planet, has raised £7m through a share issue. The company has also appointed a new CEO and published its interim results for the six months ended June 30 2022. Based on the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) in Rotherham, Xeros is a Leeds University spin-out that has moved to “IP-rich, capital-light” business model with water saving and filtration technologies with multiple commercial applications. The share issue was needed as Xeros’ board said earlier in the year that it required further investment to fund the business through to cash breakeven. For the six months, the company reported an increase in its adjusted EBITDA by 36.9% to £3.9m, up from £2.8m in the same period of 2022. The company continues to make progress with its XFilter Technology that enables washing machine manufacturers to provide consumers with the ability to capture and easily and safely dispose of over 90% of microfibres, including microplastics, released during laundry cycles. Having secured a deal with German company Hanning in June, a development agreement was signed in September 2022 with a second large European component supplier to multiple domestic washing machine OEMs. Advertisement In the commercial laundry market, traditionally the proving ground of Xeros technology, progress is being made in China, India and France. Also in India, IFB, the second largest domestic washing machine company in India by sales volume is expected to launch a domestic machine with Xeros technology in Q4 of 2022. The results said that: “A successful launch in India of our domestic XC technology will be a pivotal moment for Xeros, not just in giving a clear line of sight to a significant future revenue stream but, as importantly, it will be key to unlocking wider adoption by the industry and share of the 100 million units per annum market.” Xeros technology also simplifies the finishing process in the manufacture of denim products. Trials have confirmed reductions in chemistry, water and energy use that means that the garments produced are greener, quicker and cheaper to manufacture. A major European retail brand has now taken the next step of asking Xeros to make a proposal for the widescale implementation of its finishing technology into their supply chain. Neil Austin, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Xeros, said: “I am pleased to report the progress made during the first half of 2022 on our three product categories of filtration, care and finish. The vital savings in water and energy that our technology can deliver has been recognised and adopted by key licensing and development partners laying a strong foundation for future growth. “The proceeds from the placing and open offer announced earlier today will be applied to winning additional contracts in each of our application areas. Our marketing investment will amplify the reach of our proposition and accelerate new licence agreements. We look forward to updating shareholders on our progress in due course.” Xeros website Images: Xeros Read more…

When It Comes To Healthy Eating We Are Kidding Ourselves The Telegraph
When It Comes To Healthy Eating We Are Kidding Ourselves The Telegraph
When It Comes To Healthy Eating, We Are Kidding Ourselves – The Telegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/when-it-comes-to-healthy-eating-we-are-kidding-ourselves-the-telegraph/ Judging by our cultural obsessions, you’d be forgiven for assuming that Britain has become a nation of foodies. We watch the cookery shows, buy the accompanying books, visit farmers’ markets, and invest in expensive kit (bread machines, blenders, slow cookers and so on). We also apparently care about health and nutrition. By 2020, the UK’s health and wellness industry was worth more than £20 billion. We measure our calories and count our steps using fancy wearable tech. Yet our diets have barely improved in the past 30 years. A global study led by researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, has found that countries around the world are now only slightly healthier than in 1990, and the UK is no exception. Using the Alternative Healthy Eating Index, which ranks diets on a scale of zero to 100, with zero denoting heavy consumption of sugar and processed meats and 100 representing the optimal balance of fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts and whole grains, the study found Britain had improved by just 1.5 points, to 42, by 2018. This despite a series of healthy eating campaigns – most memorably the state-backed exhortation, since 2003, to eat our five-a-day. Why, then, do unhealthy diets remain so deeply entrenched? Data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey suggests only a third of adults aged 19 to 64 were meeting the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable consumption by 2019. And while last month’s study examining dietary changes since 1990, published in the Nature journal, found higher education was generally linked to greater consumption of healthy foods, it was not always linked to lower consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages and red or processed meat. Separate studies published last month found more than 80 per cent of the UK population will be overweight or obese by 2060, at a cost to the economy of £142 billion a year, and cancer cases among under-50s are rising rapidly, with ultra-processed or junk food believed to be the main culprit. In Scotland, life expectancy at birth has now fallen to 76.6 for boys and 80.8 for girls, according to new data published in September, compared with 79.3 and 83.1 respectively in England. “The conversation I have repeatedly [with patients] is that people are aware [of the need to eat well] but it just doesn’t fit in with their lifestyles,” says Dr Gero Baiarda, clinical director at GPDQ healthcare services and a member of MyGP. “They find it inconvenient. Whether it’s lunch or dinner time, people say, ‘I’m busy and it’s easy to stay at my desk and get a Deliveroo.’ ” Patients at his practice in Windsor also report exhaustion as a demotivating factor when it comes to cooking healthy meals from scratch. Even if some of those meals purport to be healthy, the true story is often different. “I think there’s ignorance about what is actually in food and I’ve been blown away sometimes by the calorie counts on things I’ve considered healthy,” says Dr Baiarda. The vast majority of convenience foods are low in protein and fibre and high in salt, sugar and fat. Even baby foods have been found to contain alarming amounts of sugar. In July, a British Dental Association survey of 109 food pouches aimed at children under 12 months found more than a quarter contained more sugar by volume than Coca-Cola. Instead of a nation of foodies, we have become a nation of addicts, hooked on sugar and salt before we can even walk. “We are becoming a sugared nation from the moment we’re born,” says Tam Fry, chairman of the National Obesity Forum. “First foods for children are stuffed full of sugar and that’s what they’ve come to expect from a very early age. Shifting that is an absolutely impossible task.” Another problem, suggests consultant dietitian Helen Bond, is a continuing lack of knowledge of how to go about cooking meals from raw ingredients. “People don’t have the know-how,” she says: “People know they should be eating more fruit and vegetables and fibre, but what we’re missing is [knowledge of] how to put that into practice.” In 2016, a study by Lurpak found Britons spent more than five hours a week consuming “food media”, but only four hours actually cooking. Psychologists have come up with various theories to explain why we bother watching these shows if we’re not actually home cooks ourselves, including the reality element that makes us feel connected to those on screen, and the programmes’ ability to emotionally transport us. Home-made food has become aspirational, it seems. Evidence suggests that cost – or at least the perception of it – is often a factor when making suboptimal food choices. “Cost is a barrier for about a third of people who don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables,” said the Association of UK Dietitians in 2019. “Some say they simply can’t afford them whilst others say they can’t buy as many fruit and vegetables as they would want to.” Plenty of cooks will counter that it’s entirely possible to eat well on a budget, as long as you’re willing to try. Indeed, the World Cancer Research Fund has reported previously that you can in fact eat your five-a-day for about 42p. (Granted, this price has no doubt risen amid recent inflation.) It’s arguably easier to make the right choices in some parts of the country than others. A Social Market Foundation report on the barriers to eating healthily found access to food may be a barrier for those living in so-called “food deserts” – areas poorly served by food stores. Some households, said the authors, “may find it difficult to easily access a wide range of healthy, affordable food products”. Its analysis suggested eight per cent of deprived areas in England and Wales were food deserts, with an estimated total of 10.2 million people in Britain living in places where healthy food was harder to come by. Rural communities were overrepresented in this category. For the rest of us, even with our easy access to supermarkets, it still undeniably takes longer to cook from scratch. While we might be willing to spend our time (and money) on food in restaurants, the number of which has grown dramatically since 1990, we’re perhaps less keen to spend it at home, where meals have become quicker and less communal. Instead of a nation of foodies, we have become a nation of sugar addicts Credit: Jamie Grill “Historically, we ate more around the table,” says Bond. “Now, more people eat on the go or in front of the television.” Unpicking the lifestyle changes that got us here might be a tall order. But, argues Fry, ministers can and should act to curb the freedom of the food industry to keep us locked in unhealthy habits. “Successive governments have failed to get the food industry to get its act together,” he says. There are so far few signs Liz Truss will be the prime minister to change this. She already hopes to scrap the sugar tax on soft drinks and is reviewing other anti-obesity measures, which could potentially lead to the ditching of the ban on high-sugar products being displayed at supermarket checkouts and the requirement for calorie counts on menus. It has been pointed out many times that failure to step up intervention costs the taxpayer dear when the NHS is left to pick up the bill, down the line. In the meantime? “We need to provide practical advice that appeals to different socioeconomic groups, depending on people’s budgets,” says Bond. “And we need to make sure we’re choosing the right foods when we go shopping – buying in season – and cooking from scratch. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but we’ve got to help people make those choices. It’s about giving people confidence.” Five surprisingly healthy foods Credit: Getty 1. Peanut butter At face value, it seems as though peanut butter is an unhealthy choice as it’s high in calories. But spread on whole grain toast or sliced apple, it makes for a snack that will keep you fuller for longer. That is thanks to its high protein and healthy fat content; it also provides a source of fibre, vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin E and potassium). Almond butter is another good choice, as it’s a source of essential omega-3 fatty acids. 2. Popcorn Make your own version with a bit less salt and sugar for a high-fibre snack that’s surprisingly healthy. When popped at home, rather than in a vat of oil, popcorn is relatively low in calories (around 120 calories per 30g serving). Most people don’t consume enough fibre – only one in 10 Britons reaches the recommended 30g per day –  so homemade popcorn could be a good way to boost your wholegrain intake. 3. Cheese You may think of cheese as an end-of-dinner-party indulgence but, when consumed in moderation, it can be a valuable source of protein and calcium for maintaining bone health. While most cheeses are relatively calorie-dense, research has actually shown that dairy intake is associated with a reduced risk of childhood obesity and, in adults, improved body composition. 4. Red meat (in moderation) A steak a day would be overdoing it, but red meat has multiple health benefits provided you choose the right source. It’s rich in iron, zinc and B vitamins, as well as being one of the main dietary sources of vitamin B12, which helps with the production of red blood cells and the maintenance of the nervous system. A healthy, balanced diet can include up to 70g of red meat per day, according to NHS guidelines. Opt for unprocessed, lean sources of red meat, like a pork tenderloin or skinless duck breast, to reap the nutritional benefits with less saturated fat. 5. Dark chocolate Cocoa-rich dark chocolate contains antioxidant compounds called flavanols, which have been proven to protect against the buildup of cholesterol as well as slightly lowering blood pressure. Another study found that dark chocolate can even improve cog...

Crypto Better Days Coming: UN Urges Federal Reserve Not To Hike Interest Rates | Bitcoinist.com – Bitcoinist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-better-days-coming-un-urges-federal-reserve-not-to-hike-interest-rates-bitcoinist-com-bitcoinist/ Crypto prices immediately came crashing down after Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell announced they are increasing interest rates during an economic summit on September 21. Now, in a not-so-delayed reaction, the United Nations is calling on the U.S. central bank and other large western regulators not to continue raising their interest rates, a UN agency says. The Fed and other central banks worldwide raised their interest rates with the objective of containing the onslaught of inflation.  The UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) warns, however, that this could trigger a worldwide economic crisis. JUST IN: United Nations says the FED and other central banks risk pushing the global economy into recession if they keep raising interest rates. — Watcher.Guru (@WatcherGuru) October 3, 2022 Better Days Ahead For Crypto? UNCTAD published its Trade and Development Report 2022 on Monday, in which it expressed concern about the possibility of a global economic calamity brought on by the Fed’s rigid monetary policy, the effects of which would be felt most severely in developing nations. “Any belief that they (central banks) will be able to bring down prices by relying on higher interest rates without generating a recession is… an imprudent gamble,” the agency said. The market immediately reacted negatively to Powell’s reiteration that the Fed must maintain its fight against rising inflation by further increasing interest rates. As has been the case over the past few months as the prices of Bitcoin and Ether have been increasingly tied to the stock market, the Bitcoin price and the larger crypto market followed suit. Current Fed Policy Hurts Vulnerable People Globally “Current policies are harmful to vulnerable populations everywhere, especially in developing nations. Rebeca Grynspan, the UNCTAD secretary-general, made these remarks at a press conference in Geneva. Market analysts at Bitfinex, a cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in the British Virgin Islands, have issued the following statements through email: “The cryptocurrency market, like other risk assets, is extremely sensitive to comments made by the Federal Reserve, and it has been recently impacted by the Fed’s rate hikes.” As of this writing, Bitcoin is trading at $19,603, up 3 percent in the last seven days, data from Coingecko show, Tuesday. A Recession Would Benefit Crypto? Meanwhile, predictions on how cryptocurrency prices would behave during a recession are all over the map. While the consensus is that the value of crypto assets will plummet in the event of a stock market crash, an opposing viewpoint is gaining ground. A recession, which American investor Stan Druckenmiller believes will happen next year, would be good for the cryptocurrency sector as a whole, he says. Druckenmiller pointed out that a growing lack of trust in governments and their central banks could be good news for cryptocurrencies. Because Bitcoin is decentralized, market watchers believe it will likely diverge from the pack and increase in price. Some analysts believe that as Bitcoin rallies – whether the Fed hikes its rates or not – so will other major cryptos like Ethereum, Tether, and Dogecoin. The Fed easing its current stance on interest rates could have a healing effect on the overall health of the crypto markets. When the Federal Reserve meets again on November 4, they will decide if interest rates will be allowed to climb again. And with the UN now breathing heavily down its nape, the Fed must get back on the drawing boards and chart its next move. The US Says It’s Helping Iranians Navigate A Massive Internet Blackout. Activists Say It’s Too Little, Too Late – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-us-says-its-helping-iranians-navigate-a-massive-internet-blackout-activists-say-its-too-little-too-late-cnn/ CNN  —  As protesters took to the streets of Iran following the death in detention of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman apprehended for apparently not wearing her hijab properly, videos of the uprising began to flood the internet. Clips of students tearing up pictures of Iran’s Supreme Leader in northern Iran. Photos of women removing their hijab in Iran’s capital, Tehran. Videos of protesters marching down the streets of the capital with their fists in the air. The outpouring of anger following Amini’s death was visible to the world. But then it went dark as WhatsApp, Signal, Viber, Skype, and even Instagram, one of the last remaining social media apps to be usable, were blocked. Internet shutdowns aren’t new in Iran, often accompanying periods of unrest and dissent. The most severe crackdown was in 2019, during which more than 100 protesters were killed and the internet was cut off for 12 days, according to Amnesty International. Activists in Iran say that the primary purpose of the shutdowns is to disrupt communication among people organizing protests on the ground and stifle dissent. “They don’t want you to be able to communicate with your friends, with your family, with your colleagues, because simply if you’re going to basically create a group […] you’re going to be more effective in the way that you are doing protest,” Amir Rashidi, director of digital rights and security at human rights organization Miaan Group, told CNN. As a result of these frequent blackouts, tech-savvy Iranians have learned increasingly to rely on more advanced tools like VPNs or Tor network as workarounds to stay connected. But even these are now being restricted by authorities and are therefore far from reliable. “I can hardly get in touch with my friends because we can’t always get connected to VPNs,” 22-year-old Ali, whose name CNN changed because he fears for his safety, told CNN via an encrypted ProtonMail conversation. A VPN, or virtual private network, encrypts the user’s traffic and connects it to a remote server, protecting the data and activity; Tor is an open-source network which allows anonymous web browsing; ProtonMail is an end-to-end encrypted email service. “This time they are not just limiting the internet,” Ali added. “They have removed WhatsApp and Instagram from local app stores, they have blocked our connection to Google Play store and App Store so we can’t download any VPN or social media apps […] they do this so protesters can’t connect to each other and can’t share news on social media, the high censorship starts from 4pm to 11:59pm, sometimes we have issues even for calling each other!” Another user, 18-year-old Nima, whose name CNN changed because he fears for his safety, told CNN there were no messaging apps that work in Iran right now without using VPNs, “The government is blocking VPNs right now, one by one. Our accessibility is getting limited each day. We are hardly able to know about the protests and the victims in my country,” he said. In comparison to the full shutdown in 2019, this blackout is more targeted and sophisticated, according to Alp Toker, director of international technology platform NetBlocks, which tracked three different methods – internet outages, mobile service disruptions, and the ban on Instagram and WhatsApp – that Iranian authorities have used to restrict online communications. “You have an environment that makes it very difficult for people to speak out to express discontent about the government in any form,” he told CNN. However, the challenges Iranians face come not just from their own regime but from the international community as well, including governments and tech companies. The Biden administration last month expanded its general license to Iran to “support the free flow of information” and authorize American tech companies to provide people inside the country access to certain tools that help them communicate with each other amid one of the worst internet shutdowns in history in Iran for breadth and scope. On Monday, President Biden said the US was making it easier for Iranians to access the internet, “including through facilitating greater access to secure, outside platforms and services.” While digital activists and Iranian digital natives welcome these moves, they fear they may not be enough to address the issues average Iranians face every day while attempting to connect to the internet. CNN has spoken with digital rights activists, tech experts and Iranian internet users who spoke out about the unintended consequences of US sanctions. Exemptions to tech sanctions were introduced in 2013 but failed to go far enough, activists say. The new exemptions weren’t introduced until September 23. “It has been almost 10 years that Iranians have had to wait for this update in the license. Better late than never, it has been a belated action by the US government. And so there has been a lot of harm done in the interim,” said Mahsa Alimardani, senior internet researcher at Article 19, a freedom of expression organization. US sanctions unwittingly accelerated Iran’s development of an internal network, the National Information Network project, ironically making it cheaper and easier for Iran’s government to shut off the internet without disrupting government operations such as banks, financial systems and hospitals, Rashidi said. These sanctions also pushed tech companies to over-comply or withdraw entirely from Iran, leaving Iranians with no alternative but to use government-controlled domestic servers at heightened personal risk in terms of safety, privacy and security, Rashidi added. “What US sanctions have done on one level is give the government basically an excuse to further nationalize and isolate Iran’s internet,” Alimardani said. Iranian internet users who spoke to CNN shared the same frustration. “I gotta complain, why do tech companies […] restrict Iranian people? They are targeting directly people not the government,” said Ali, who says he’s posting on social media “to inform people about the different ways they can connect to the internet in this hard censorship because I believe it’s a human right.” Not only has the Iranian government blocked the Apple Store and Google Play – making it impossible for users to access tools that could circumvent the blackout – but activists in Iran say they are unable to upload their own apps for wider distribution. CNN approached Apple for a comment but had not received a statement by the time of publication. In a statement to CNN, Google said: “Google has allowed users in Iran to access free, publicly available services related to communications and/or sharing of informational materials. This includes products like Google Search, free consumer Gmail, Google Maps and YouTube. It is important to note that, although Google can decide to make these services available, we cannot ensure they are accessible within Iran.” When asked about the inability of Iranian app developers to upload their own apps to Google Play Store, Google said the new US sanction exemptions do “not extend to accepting or hosting Iranian-origin apps.” Google also recently announced it would make more of its tools available, including more VPNs and location sharing on Google apps, in the light of updated US sanctions. But digital activists Alimardani and Rashidi call this “low-hanging fruit,” saying Google needs to do more. “Google Cloud Platform, Google App Engine, they have been very important in terms of internet infrastructure, helping Iranian technologists right now. So that really needs to be made available,” Alimardani said. Asked why other Google services, such as Google Classroom, Google Analytics, Google Developers, Google chat, remain inaccessible, including many services accessible via the Google Play Store, the company replied: “Ongoing legal or technical barriers may block the provision of certain services, but we are exploring whether additional products might be made available.” Alimardani and Rashidi point favorably to GitHub, a popular code hosting platform for IT developers, which last year secured a license from the US government to offer its services in Iran. Signal, the encrypted messaging network, is also offering instructions to people in Iran and suggesting help for whoever is able to host a proxy server and direct download. CNN contacted the Iranian government for comment but received no reply at the time of publication. While more people inside Iran now rely on the Tor browser, which has seen a spike in users since the start of the protests, a sense of defiance is spreading among Iranian digital natives. “We suffered a lot from the Islamic Republic for many years. We were hurt in different ways,” said 30-year-old Reza, whose name CNN changed because he fears for his safety. “But the recent tragedy gave us a new sadness, anger and despair that we cannot stop thinking about it, and the way the Islamic Republic responded and the future of us and our loved ones. “If we don’t react and stand up against oppression, we are either a bad person or a stupid person.”

Airoha Technology Kicks Off Ultra-Fast Symmetric 8 Gbps Deployments And Sets A New Benchmark For Global Fixed Broadband Transformation With Breakthroughs In XGS-PON Technology – PR Newswire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/airoha-technology-kicks-off-ultra-fast-symmetric-8-gbps-deployments-and-sets-a-new-benchmark-for-global-fixed-broadband-transformation-with-breakthroughs-in-xgs-pon-technology-pr-newswire/ HSINCHU, Oct. 4, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Taiwan’s premier IC design house Airoha Technology today announced that it had landed the U.S. market with deployments of the world’s fastest XGS-PON broadband networks that ensure symmetric 8 Gbps upload and download speeds with 3ms low latency. Deployed to a number of project areas in collaboration with a U.S. telecom company, the AIROHA IC chips for fiber optical broadband Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) strictly observe standards set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with a symmetric speed of 8 gigabits per second verified by Speedtest®, which is the fastest so far in the real world optical fiber networks, and have set a new benchmark for the introduction of 10G-PON technology amid the world’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and thriving developments of digital content market. A subsidiary of the IC giant MediaTeK, AIROHA has more than 20 years of engineering experience in fixed network with an inclusive product portfolio for fixed broadband aimed to provide interoperability and reliability in a highly heterogeneous and stability-demanding environment. The case has demonstrated AIROHA’s ability in assisting telecom carriers and network operators to deploy high-performance services to the premises of their customers with faster-than-expected pace and reduced operating and maintenance costs. Living up to promised speed in compliance with FCC and verified with Speedtest® The Federal Infrastructure Investment and Job Act of 2021 requires the federal government of the U.S. to spend $65 billion on broadband access, which has become the industry’s biggest focus. To help establish the credibility of the entire industrial ecosystem, the FCC has set rigid regulations for ensuring that the quality of network services will live up to their providers’ promises. In August 2022, AIROHA helped a U.S. telecom operator commercialize the world’s first XGS-PON services that achieve a real-world speed of symmetrical 8 Gbps in compliance with FCC regulations. For telecom operators, fiber broadband is not just about providing network speed with stability and reliability, but more essentially, is also about the ability to keep compliance with FCC and earn trust from the broad market. The most critical and difficult part about the U.S. 8 Gbps XGS-PON deployments is to achieve low latency under 3ms as tested against Speedtest® standards. AIROHA solves this challenge through impeccable software and hardware integration as well as firmware optimization. Market demands are driving fixed-line broadband to migrate toward fiber Market demands rising from Work from Home (WFH) trend during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid developments of content technologies are driving fixed-line broadband operators to migrate to fiber optical cable at an accelerated pace. Innovative applications including 4K and 8K video streaming, AR, VR and Metaverse need high speed data transfer of high-quality video and audio content. Network service providers therefore have been looking into more advanced PON technology of 10G-PON. And, moreover, proposed 25G/50G-PON specifications are looming in the upcoming future. 20 years’ experience in serving over 150 operator clients paved the way to the U.S. market in landing the world’s fastest optical broadband Based upon 20 years of accumulative experience in deploying broadband services for 150+ operator customers, Aroha Technology had been able to help the U.S. telecom carrier to realize the world’s first symmetric 8 Gbps broadband services in just two years with a two-phase project. During the past two years, AIROHA has rolled out all its expertise in delivering SoC, software and services to gain the trust of the customer. In the first phase, we demonstrated to the customer our muscle in enabling GPON technology, and in the second phase, we made big breakthroughs in 8 Gbps XGS-PON.  AIROHA has a full range of market-leading fiber migration solutions, from xDSL, xPON to 10G-PON. AIROHA is able to provide the compatibility and interoperability needed for broadband services with supports for various exiting devices from different vendors. AIROHA fully understands the pain points telecom operators and network operators would face in PON transformation. In the wave of accelerated fiber migration, we will continue to provide solid & inclusive solutions, and become the most trustworthy & valuable long-term partner for more service providers. Xiroverse To Launch Its Web3 Gaming Application Xiro App In Q4 2022 Outlook India
Xiroverse To Launch Its Web3 Gaming Application ‘Xiro App’ In Q4 2022 – Outlook India https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/xiroverse-to-launch-its-web3-gaming-application-xiro-app-in-q4-2022-outlook-india/ The London-based Web3 and Metaverse-focused tech start-up with global ambitions transform any smartphone into a Web3 gaming platform by providing seamless access to the Metaverse. With over 250K signups for its gaming app waitlist, Xiroverse announced the launch of the Xiro app, a ‘Proof of Game’ protocol-based lifestyle application. The app allows users to reform their mobile phones into a powerful Web3 and Metaverse gaming platform with SocialFi & GameFi features. What is being described as “ground-breaking” by experts in the industry, the Xiro App is currently in closed testing with hundreds of users and on track to launch to the public in December 2022. Although the app’s full specifications, functionality, and roadmap remain under wraps, Xiroverse boasts its app’s user-friendliness, making it easier for users to use blockchain technology and Web3. The app will give users Non-Fungible and Fungible Tokens, an in-app marketplace, built-in crypto wallets, a protocol-based token mining software, and hundreds of games. Xiroverse takes Web3 gaming into eSports with the Xiro App and will launch tournaments in partnership with its sponsors. The Xiroverse engineering and business teams have been working over the last seven months to build the application, removing all the complexities of Web3 for their users. Roshan George, the founder of Xiroverse, told Outlook, “Xiroverse is building an ecosystem that’s free to access and easy to sign up to. It will be as simple as creating a new social media account. We will take care of all the Web3 complexities in the background. We will even allocate some tokens for gamers to use the app. The goal is to introduce people to Web3 and the Metaverse via gaming by changing the Web3 user onboarding from a 6-8 step process to a 1 step process.” Xiroverse provides its technical and blockchain infrastructure for gaming studios and developers to onboard millions of games into Web3 and the Metaverse. The start-up aspires to be a one-stop-shop for all things Web3 and Metaverse by creating a wholly immersive and community-focused experience in which individuals will gain digital ownership over how they spend time on the internet. What is Xiroverse? Xiroverse is a Web3 and Metaverse platform building an IRL environment from scratch. Xiroverse has a “business-first” strategy with long-term aims, challenging the current Web3 paradigm and making history in the sector by changing how consumers and businesses interact with Web3 and the Metaverse. Xiroverse has created a new Web3 business model to onboard the following billion users into Web3. Xiroverse currently has four key pillars:Xiro App is a ‘Proof of Play’ mobile application that turns a player’s smartphone into a Web3 gaming platform. The primary objective is to enroll the following billion individuals while providing a seamless user experience at zero initial cost. The single-step user onboarding process removes all present entry hurdles to Web3. Users no longer need to pay a gas fee, open a centralized exchange account on Coinbase or Binance, buy cryptocurrencies like Ethereum or Solana, set up a cryptocurrency wallet, transfer tokens, and so on. Xiro Card NFT is the start-up’s first NFT project to onboard the earliest patrons into its ecosystem. The aim is to leverage the experience of the Web3 natives and early pioneers to help onboard the next billion users. Holders will get an opportunity to grow with the business, earning perks and rewards along the way as Xiroverse develops into the Metaverse. Xiroverse Business is focused on getting gaming firms and creators into Web3 and the Metaverse. Xiroverse will also provide businesses access to their marketplace, launchpad, and Xiro app and help them bridge their businesses to the new digital era. The possibilities are limitless, from connecting Web2 games to Web3 and the Metaverse to changing existing Web2 games into Web3 games. A $1 million Web3 and Metaverse Investment Fund from Xiroverse will assist gaming studios and developers with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure. Xiroversity is a platform where users can learn more about blockchain technology and Web3. Xiroverse aims to grow Xiroversity into the go-to place for learning about digital ownership, blockchain, and the future of digital interactions, whether you are a consumer or developer interested in building within the ecosystem. Future of Web3 and the Metaverse As technology advances and converges, the industry will be at an inflection point that will see investment and technological advancement soar as more businesses wake up to the vast realm of emerging opportunities. We already see early movement in that direction, with Facebook changing its name to Meta. Meta has committed $10 billion to develop its Metaverse, and Microsoft broke records by acquiring Activision Blizzard for $69 billion. According to a report published by McKinsey & Company and Citi Bank, the Metaverse could be valued at $5 – $13 trillion by 2030. Roshan George told Outlook that Xiroverse is not planning on directly competing with significant corporations initially but will create a unique, community-focused niche within the Metaverse. “Our initial focus is to capture market share by onboarding users and gaming studios into the Web3 and Metaverse space. This will be achieved by providing a unique community-focused experience for users and partnering with multiple businesses and gaming studios. We will build Xiroverse block by block, driven by our North Star, to remove all barriers and pain points for users and businesses to gain access to Web3 and the Metaverse.”

From 1960 to 1965 they moved to Sacramento, California, Washington D.C., and finally to Denver, Colorado, where they spent the next 34 years. Lucille returned to the educational field in various elementary schools in Lakewood, Colorado. Most of her time working in the schools was spent in student resources and library science. In 1977, Lucille got her real estate license when she and Stan lived on a golf course in Colorado. Stan managed the golf course, while Lucille managed the course membership. Upon their retirement, they moved to Auburn, Indiana, in 2000, to be near their daughter. Lucille was so proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all that they have accomplished. They will cherish remembering her wit, warm smile and the three pinches on the arm … meaning I love you! She is survived by Stan Greenlee, her loving husband of 70 years, who together raised an amazing family; two children, Cynthia Sue Wilson and Kevin Stan Greenlee; four grandchildren, Erica Elizabeth Simpson, Molly Margaret Wilson, Sasha Jane Greenlee, Mira Kate Greenlee; and two great-grandchildren, Jaden Robert Alexander Simpson and Zoe May Elizabeth Simpson. A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 7, 2022, at Feller and Clark Funeral Home, 1860 Center St., Auburn, with the Rev. Robert Barton and Jeremy Simpson officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be from 9-11 a.m., on Friday, prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorial may be directed to First United Methodist Church, 1203 E. 7th St., Auburn, IN 46706. To send condolences, visit www.fellerandclark.com.

Pomegranates may even help prevent cancer, according to current scientific research. They can also help protect your heart. This instantly makes it a great addition to your diet. Pomegranates are sour, sweet fruits with red, thick skin. The hundreds of juicy seeds inside the non-edible skin can be eaten on their own or added to salads, cereals, yogurt, and other foods. Pomegranate juice in bottles is another convenient option to take advantage of some of this tasty fruit’s health advantages. In this article, we list the many advantages of consuming pomegranates regularly.  Here’s why you should add pomegranates to your daily diet: 1. Lowering cancer risk Antioxidants and flavonoids, which are both known to stop free radicals from harming your cells, are abundant in pomegranates. Pomegranates may be useful in avoiding prostate, breast, lung, and colon cancer, according to certain research. Additionally, consuming pomegranates has been proven to slow the formation of prostate, colon, skin, and lung malignancies. To fully comprehend the impact on humans, more research is needed. 2. Rich in antioxidants Antioxidants are substances that aid in defending your body’s cells from issues brought on by free radicals. Although free radicals are constantly present in the body, an excessive amount of them can be toxic and help to cause a number of chronic illnesses. 3. Improves heart health There are indications that foods high in polyphenols, including pomegranates, may be good for heart health. Pomegranate extract may lower blood pressure, reduce oxidative stress and inflammation in the arteries, and assist combat the development of atherosclerotic plaque, which can cause heart attacks and strokes. 4. Helpful for diabetics and pre-diabetics According to preliminary research, insulin resistance improved in type 2 diabetics who started drinking pomegranate juice. Pomegranates can also aid in maintaining a healthy weight in those without diabetes. 5. Lower risk of kidney stones According to research, pomegranate extract may help prevent kidney stones from forming, a benefit mostly related to its antioxidant activity. Furthermore, studies have revealed that pomegranate extract can help control blood levels of oxalates, calcium, and phosphates, which are frequently shown in kidney stones. 6. Helps manage cholesterol Heart disease is frequently brought on by atherosclerosis, which is the accumulation of fat and cholesterol in the arteries. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or “bad” cholesterol, which clogs arteries, may be lessened by pomegranate juice. Furthermore, it can raise high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, or “good” cholesterol, which reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. 7. Helps reduce inflammation An illness or injury will often cause short-term inflammation in the body. If neglected, persistent inflammation, however, can become a concern. Chronic illnesses including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease can all be made worse by inflammation if it is not treated. Pomegranate consumption might reduce the chronic inflammation that raises the risk of chronic illness. 8. Has anti-bacterial properties Pomegranate phytochemicals may aid in the battle against pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and yeast. By focusing on undesirable oral bacteria that may become a problem when they overgrow, such as those that produce foul breath and encourage tooth decay, they may safeguard the health of your mouth, according to studies. 9. Improves brain health Pomegranates provide protection for your brain from ailments that are impacted by inflammation and oxidative stress. According to some research, ellagitannins may help prevent the onset of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease by lowering oxidative stress and boosting brain cell survival. Furthermore, they could aid in the recovery from hypoxic-ischemic brain damage. Enjoy pomegranates and other seasonal fruits to obtain their many benefits that can help you improve your health. Valley Gets Grants For EV Charging Stations | News, Sports, Jobs – Warren Tribune Chronicle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/valley-gets-grants-for-ev-charging-stations-news-sports-jobs-warren-tribune-chronicle/ WARREN — Electric-vehicle owners in, or those just passing through, the Mahoning Valley will, in the future, have more options to plug in with some grant help from the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. It announced Monday grants worth about $8 million are going to 25 counties, including Trumbull and Mahoning, to install more than 150 public EV fast-charging stations. Four of the 32 locations across the state are in the Valley — one in Trumbull County will receive $271,720 and three in Mahoning County will receive a combined $895,904. In Ashtabula County to the north, two locations are in line to receive grants totaling $474,960. In Trumbull County, the money will go toward installing four single-port, 180-kilowatt chargers to serve four parking spaces at the Shell station at 6985 Truck World Blvd., Hubbard. Shell Oil Products US received the grant. The locations in Mahoning County are: • Eastern Gateway Community College will receive $420,944 to install five dual-port, 360-kilowatt chargers for 10 parking spaces at Thomas Humphries Hall, 101 E. Federal St., Youngstown; • Shell Oil Products US is receiving another $271,720 to install four single-port, 180-kilowatt chargers for four parking spaces at a second Shell station, this one at 998 E. Western Reserve Road, Youngstown; • Pilot Travel Centers is in line for $203,240 to install two dual-port, 350-kilowatt chargers and one single-port, 100-kilowatt charger to serve four parking spaces at Pilot Flying J Travel Center Store 11, 10920 Market St., North Lima. Funding for the grants comes from dollars allocated to Ohio from the Volkswagen Mitigation Trust Fund, which resulted from a lawsuit that claimed VW installed devices on certain vehicles from 2009 to 2016 that made vehicles appear to be complaint with emissions standards, when in fact they were not. It’s happening as the auto industry is undertaking a massive shift away from gasoline-powered vehicles to electric vehicles, pulling consumers along for the ride. The U.S. government also is helping light the way with the U.S. Department of Transportation announcing at the end of September that all 50 states have received final approval to start construction on a nationwide network of EV charging stations. The plan is to place one roughly every 50 miles along interstate highways. Final approval of the last remaining stations triggered the release of $1.5 billion in federal funds to all jurisdictions nationwide — or $5 billion over five years — to install or upgrade chargers along 75,000 miles of highway from coast to coast, with a goal of 500,000 EV chargers nationwide. Construction of new EV charging locations in the U.S. network could begin by next spring. The U.S. government also will provide an additional $2.5 billion for local grants to fill remaining gaps in the charging network in rural areas and in disadvantaged communities, which are less likely to own the higher-priced electric vehicles or have charging stations readily available near them. The Federal Highway Administration said last month it will begin taking applications for that money later this year. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Samsung Latam Launches ‘House Of Sam’ Metaverse Experience In Decentraland – Metaverse Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/samsung-latam-launches-house-of-sam-metaverse-experience-in-decentraland-metaverse-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Samsung Latam, the regional division of the electronics giant, has decided to present its own space in Decentraland, an Ethereum-based metaverse platform. The space, which will be named “House of Sam,” will allow users to have virtual contact with different products of the brand, and play mini-games to win Samsung-branded rewards for their avatars. Samsung Latam Dives Into the Metaverse Samsung Latam, the Latin American regional division of the electronics company, has decided to dedicate an online space to increasing the visibility of its brand in the digital world. The company will maintain a space called “House of Sam” in Decentraland, one of the biggest Ethereum-based metaverse platforms. According to reports, the goal of this move is to bring the brand closer to a new generation of consumers using the metaverse as a tool. The space is already open for users, being launched on September 1 with a virtual show from the Brazilian trio, Melim. About the launch of this new digital space and its objectives, Arthur Wong, marketing director for Samsung Latam, stated: Our customers will be able to interact with each other and participate in exclusive shows, courses, and events that we will offer for free at Decentraland, one of the most democratic and open spaces in the metaverse. Our goal is to be ever closer to Gen Z, our younger consumers who no longer draw boundaries between what is physical and what is virtual. Activities and Prizes The House of Sam will offer a series of mini-games related to the brand, that will also present prizes to users in the form of exclusive wearables for its avatars in Decentraland. Some of the most iconic products of the Samsung brand are also present in the virtual space, including the Freestyle portable projector. This is one of many moves Samsung has already made directly into the metaverse, though the company has also been active in the NFT (non-fungible token) marketplace and the bitcoin mining chip business. In July, the company launched another metaverse experience named Space Tycoon as part of the Roblox platform. In January, the company opened its own store in Decentraland. Airthings View Plus Review Pickr Pickr
Airthings View Plus Review Pickr Pickr
Airthings View Plus Review – Pickr – Pickr https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/airthings-view-plus-review-pickr-pickr/ Not sure if the rooms in your home are the right temperature or need clearer air? The Airthings View Plus could help, though we’re not sure how much. What is the Airthings View Plus? Designed to monitor the air for nasties that might cause you or loved ones harm, the Airthings View Plus is an air monitor with the ability to track and check the air you leave the gadget in. One of a few models found in the Airthings range, the View Plus is basically the premium model that can do it all, and even shows you results on a small display. Ovular in design, the View Plus is very much a passive device that you just leave on, connected, and to do its own thing, with a small electronic ink screen up front that can be configured to show the measurements you need most, with a hand wave in front of a sensor telling you whether the air is good with a happy face, or less good without. You can have it run on batteries for up to two years, or even keep it plugged into a USB Type C power source if need be. All up, it’s a fairly simple design made for use inside the home, though works for one room at a time. What does Airthings View Plus do? Air monitoring information on the View Plus includes tracking dust particle levels in the air (PM), excess CO2 from when we breathe out or cry, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, airborne chemicals known as Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that emerge often from the paints and treatments used on furniture, and even potentially slight forms of radioactivity called radon. There’s also an app that can talk to your phone, compiling the results of previous days to let you know whether you have issues in the immediate, or if they’ve been building for some time. It’s the sort of technology that might be handy if you have loved ones with a respiratory illness or some form of immunodeficiency, as it can provide a glance as to what the air is doing inside your home and their room, reporting in either the app, the gadget’s screen, or even popping up on your wearable. Does it do the job? If you’re looking for a way to check what the air is like in a room, the Airthings View Plus definitely provides that, with a quick read out on the small e-ink display on the device, plus a little more with some data over an extended amount of time. Helpful data like an increase on VOC levels might make you rethink your furniture choices, or even go out and buy a purifier that can cut back on the levels of airborne chemicals, such as when you touch a piece of furniture. It’s a similar situation if you’re intending to work out if a room is too hot or too cold, and whether that drives you to turn on a fan or the AC. That can be super helpful, because those insights could calm air levels in a room in the following ways: Too much CO2? Open a window. Easy. Too many VOCs? Consider a purifier and switch it on. Temperature too high? Turn on the AC or switch on a fan. Makes sense. The issue of temperature has been quite useful through our time reviewing the View Plus, simply because it provided a good understanding of the warmth for the newborn’s room. With temperature being tracked on the floor with a heater and up top in a baby monitor, the Airthings View Plus provided a position in the middle of each that was able to more accurately cite what our baby would have been feeling the temperature to be, which was always a degree or two cooler than the gauge in the camera. Unfortunately, insights like this need to be interpreted by you, the user, and worse, can’t be triggered in an automatic way, at least not at the time of publishing this review. What does it need? We live in a world where many things can connect. Grab some smart lights and they can be triggered and controlled remotely, and the same is true for many appliances, fans, air conditioners, and so on and so on. The world of the smart home is upon us, and things can talk. They can trigger from each other and play nice. But Airthings doesn’t appear to have gotten that memo, at least not in a remarkably complete kind of way. You can connect Alexa to your Airthings account and get it to check a sensor reading in a room, and you can have that talk to IFTT or Amazon Alexa in the smallest of ways. But it’s not a simple logic of “if temperature equals this, then do something else” sort of affair. It would be great if an increase in temperature detected by Airthings could trigger Alexa or IFTTT to turn on a compatible fan, or even if the View Plus picked up on increased humidity, if it could turn on the power switch for a smart power point connected to a dehumidifier. These should all be technically possible, but none of them are at present. In fact, almost every attempt we had at making a smart home action for the Airthings View Plus didn’t result in success. The most we could seem to do was ask Alexa what the temperature was, which wasn’t exactly our idea of using the View Plus to improve our smart home, and just came back to that overall problem of lacking any immediate action inside the smart home. Is it worth your money? You’ll likely find a few insights here and there with the View Plus, but at $399, it’s hard to call it a compelling purchase, especially given where aspects of the technology can be found. Comparatively, Dyson’s Purifer Cool Link fan range has the ability to monitor temperature, VOCs, and particulate matter, and adds in a way to treat it, too. Granted, it comes in a little more, fetching a good $300-400 on top, but it provides the “action” part of the insight, which is what Airthings lacks. Yay or nay? Simply put, the Airthings View Plus is all insight, no action, and that makes this one a difficult choice. There are some suggestions at times — open a window — but for the most part, this is insights with little action, something that itself is frustrating, to say the least. You can make your own calls, of course, but if there was a little more in the way of joining the dots, the roughly $400 spend for the View Plus would make sense for more people. If you have someone that you care for who needs to have these details checked, the View Plus could be a handy addition. However, Airthings really needs to sort out its smart home connections and capabilities, because that lets down the package overall. It means you can get the information, but you’ll need to work out what to do with it, because there’s no too much help here, automatic or otherwise. Airthings View Plus The good Works without much intervention Provides data without an app on its on-screen eInk display Offers more data for use over time in the app The not-so-good Doesn’t give you many actionable insights Connecting to the rest of the smart home isn’t as seamless or easy as it could be

Mastercard Pushes Deeper Into Crypto With New Tool For Combating Fraud CNBC
Mastercard Pushes Deeper Into Crypto With New Tool For Combating Fraud CNBC
Mastercard Pushes Deeper Into Crypto With New Tool For Combating Fraud – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mastercard-pushes-deeper-into-crypto-with-new-tool-for-combating-fraud-cnbc/ Mastercard credit cards Roberto Machado Noa/ LightRocket via Getty Images Mastercard will on Tuesday debut a new piece of software that helps banks identify and cut off transactions from fraud-prone crypto exchanges, the company told CNBC exclusively. Called Crypto Secure, the system uses “sophisticated” artificial intelligence algorithms to determine the risk of crime associated with crypto exchanges on the Mastercard payment network. The system relies on data from the blockchain, a public record of crypto transactions, as well as other sources. The service is powered by CipherTrace, a blockchain security startup Mastercard acquired last year. Based in Menlo Park, California, CipherTrace helps businesses and government agencies investigate illicit transactions involving cryptocurrencies. Its main rivals are New York firm Chainalysis and Elliptic, which is based in London. Mastercard is launching the service against a backdrop of growing crime in the nascent digital asset market. The amount of crypto entering wallets with known criminal connections surged to a record $14 billion last year, according to data from blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis. And 2022 has seen a spate of high-profile hacks and scams targeting crypto investors. On the Crypto Secure platform, banks and other card issuers are shown a dashboard with color-coded ratings representing the risk of suspicious activity, with severity of risk ranging from red for “high” to green for “low.” Crypto Secure doesn’t make a judgment call on whether to turn away a specific crypto merchant. That decision is down to the card issuers themselves. The idea is that the kind of trust we provide for digital commerce transactions, we want to be able to provide the same kind of trust to digital asset transactions for consumers, banks and merchants. Ajay Bhalla president of cyber and intelligence, Mastercard Mastercard already uses similar technology to prevent fraud in fiat currency transactions. With Crypto Secure, it’s expanding such functionality to bitcoin and other virtual currencies. Ajay Bhalla, Mastercard’s president of cyber and intelligence business, said the move was about ensuring its partners can “stay compliant with the complex regulatory landscape.” “The whole digital asset market is now a pretty large, substantial market,” he told CNBC in an exclusive interview ahead of the product launch.  “The idea is that the kind of trust we provide for digital commerce transactions, we want to be able to provide the same kind of trust to digital asset transactions for consumers, banks and merchants.” Compliance has become an important focus in crypto lately as more banks and payment companies enter the fray with their own services for trading and storing digital assets. Last month, Nasdaq became the latest established financial firm to join Wall Street’s embrace of crypto, launching custody services for institutional clients. Meanwhile, governments on either side of the Atlantic are looking to implement fresh curbs on the crypto sector, which so far been mostly lacking in regulation. Last month, the Biden administration released its first-ever framework on regulation of the crypto industry in the U.S., while the European Union has approved landmark crypto laws of its own. The payments giant is doubling down on crypto at a time when prices of digital currencies are falling and volumes have dried up. The entire market has shed roughly $2 trillion in value since the peak of a huge rally in November 2021. Bitcoin is now worth less than $20,000 a coin — a roughly 70% plunge from its near-$69,000 all-time high — and in recent weeks has struggled to climb meaningfully above that level. Asked about the impact of the declines in crypto prices on Mastercard’s digital asset strategy, Bhalla said the company was “focused on providing solutions to the stakeholders for the long term.” “These are market cycles, they will come and they will go,” he said. “I think you’ve got to take the longer view that this is a big marketplace now and evolving and is probably going to be much, much bigger in the future.” Despite the slump in digital token prices, crime in the industry has shown no signs of abating. A particularly popular method of swindling crypto investors of their funds this year has been to exploit blockchain bridges, tools used to exchange assets from one crypto network to another. Around $1.4 billion has been lost to breaches on these cross-chain bridges since the start of 2022, according to Chainalysis data. Read more about tech and crypto from CNBC Pro Against that backdrop, major financial services firms and crypto platforms are investing in ways of lowering the risk of ill-gotten gains being transferred through their systems. Cryptocurrencies are often criticized for their use in money laundering and other forms of illicit activity — an issue that stems in part from the pseudonymous nature of participants on blockchain networks. But the development of new software tools has made it easier to trace crypto criminals’ ill-gotten gains. Companies are employing sophisticated data science and machine learning techniques to analyze data on public blockchains.  Mastercard is also seeking to keep pace with its main rival Visa, which has made notable investments of its own in the crypto arena. In its first fiscal quarter of 2022, Visa said it facilitated $2.5 billion in transactions from cards linked to an account at a crypto platform. Last year, Visa launched a crypto advisory practice to offer advice to clients on everything from rolling out crypto features to exploring non-fungible tokens. Mastercard declined to disclose the overall dollar value of fiat-to-crypto volumes from its network of 2,400 crypto exchanges. However, Bhalla said the number of transactions the credit card giant facilitates per minute now runs into the “thousands.”

Bay Area Technology School Holds Meeting For Parents Days After Shooting – KRON4 https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bay-area-technology-school-holds-meeting-for-parents-days-after-shooting-kron4/ (KRON) — Days after a shooting took place on campus, the Bay Area Technology School held a meeting for parents Monday night. It was an opportunity for them to ask questions and find out what’s next for the school, which has been closed since the shooting last Wednesday. The executive director of the school repeatedly said that he wanted to be as transparent as possible, so he spent hours answering questions written by parents. Oakland Police Chief Leronne Armstrong was in attendance and parents asked him for answers as well. On the same day that video was released showing the moment at least two people fired rounds on the school’s campus, parents finally got some answers about what will happen at the school going forward. “We are still having ‘Back-to-School Night’ next week, because at some point we’re going to be back to school,” said Bay Area Technology School Executive Director, Dr. Seth Feldman. He laid out some of the plans, including canceling next week’s report cards, new drop-off procedures and closing off the school to neighboring schools that share the same campus. After Dr. Feldman finished his prepared remarks, he took written questions from parents. Most of the questions he received were about what happened when he called 911. “I want to be honest. I was put on hold when I called 911,” said Dr. Feldman. In response to Dr. Feldman, Oakland Police Chief Leronne Armstrong said it is standard practice to put someone on hold when there is a large volume of calls coming in, like when the shooting happened on Wednesday. KRON On is streaming news live now Chief Armstrong also said that his officers will continue to be present at the school. “We’ll be supporting the administration until the school no longer feels we need to be here,” said Chief Armstrong. Another question that parents asked Chief Armstrong about was if there were messages sent asking people not to talk to police. “We are investigating text messages that may have been sent by someone asking people not to cooperate but at this point we’re not able to confirm the validity of it,” said Chief Armstrong. Parents were also concerned about the lack of armed security guards on campus. Dr. Feldman said that is up to the Oakland Unified School District. “We are not allowed to have a school officer. We are not allowed to have armed security on campus. If I was allowed to have armed security on campus, we would have armed security on campus,” said Dr. Feldman. The Bay Area Technology School is expected to re-open next Monday, according to the school principal.

Design Process For New Woodland Library Underway The Reflector
Design Process For New Woodland Library Underway – The Reflector https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/design-process-for-new-woodland-library-underway-the-reflector/ Rick Bannan / rick@thereflector.com Years of planning for a new Woodland Community Library are coming to a head as the library district plans to break ground on the facility next summer. The 7,500-square-foot project is planned for land on Lakeshore Drive to the east of Goerig Street. When complete, the facility will roughly triple the amount of space the library has at its current location at 770 Park St., which it has occupied for nearly 100 years. The project is currently in the design development phase and is expected to move toward construction drawings in December, according to the Fort Vancouver Regional Library District’s  current timeline. The district serves libraries in Clark, Skamania and Klickitat counties as well as Woodland, and also supports the independent Yale Valley Library District. The district hopes to start the permitting and bid process in April, with a groundbreaking in June. The library is expected to take a year to complete, with it opening to the public in summer 2024, according to the district. Last year, the district welcomed its newest building as the Ridgefield Community Library opened its doors in July of 2021. That building used the existing Ridgefield Community Center, which the old facility was attached to, as a framework for the project. That library is close to the same size of what’s planned for Woodland at 7,900 square feet. Unlike that project, Woodland’s building will be constructed from the ground up. Though specifics will be nailed down in the coming months, FVRL Communications and Marketing Director Tak Kendrick said initial concepts include an outside terrace area with seating alongside staples like a teen area, study rooms and a community room. “It’s going to be about three times the size of the existing Woodland library, so a lot more of everything,” Kendrick said. A new location for Woodland has been in the works since 2013 when the district commissioned a facilities study that identified the need. In 2017, the district purchased the land for the new spot for slightly more than $1 million. The project picked up again in December after being on hold for a year. Cost estimates for the initially-planned 12,000-square-foot facility came in $2 million higher than the budgeted $7 million, according to the district. That required tweaking what the building would look like. The district ultimately went with a smaller, 7,500-square-foot building. “One of the things that happens in that first blush (of the project) is that we want to dream big. Then we need the right size for the reality,” Kendrick said. The district knew the property it purchased was bigger than what the district needed, Kendrick said, even when looking at the larger building. The location on Lakeshore Drive was too good to pass up. “We just had such a great opportunity to buy that space. It’s just so perfect for us,” Kendrick said. Now the district is looking to sell a half-acre of land at the corner of Goerig Street and Lakeshore Drive to the city of Woodland. They hosted a public hearing on the sale on Oct. 3.  As to what the city plans for the parcel, Woodland Mayor Will Finn told the Longview Daily News the property would host a gathering area and a new visitor’s center. The current visitor’s center is housed in a trailer on property on the other side of Lakeshore Drive from the district’s parcel for sale. A price for the sale will be negotiated between the district and the city, Kendrick said. The $7 million project has received significant support at the state level, receiving more than $2.5 million in appropriations from the Washington State Legislature’s past two capital budgets. Right now, the project needs to come up with the final $1.5 million which Kendrick said would be reached by a final fundraising push. “We’re excited to be moving forward and have a bit of a trajectory to get the people of Woodland an amazing library,” Kendrick said.

(Yonhap) SEOUL, Oct. 4 (Korea Bizwire) — Online shopping in South Korea rose 16 percent on-year in August on the back of surging demand for travel during the vacation season amid eased COVID-19 restrictions and growing grocery shopping for preparations for the Chuseok holiday, data showed Tuesday. The value of online shopping transactions came to 17.72 trillion won (US$12.36 billion) in August, compared with 15.28 trillion won a year earlier, according to the data from Statistics Korea. It marked the second largest monthly figure ever since 2017, when the agency adopted the current data compiling system. The record high figure was seen in December last year when the value stood at 17.81 trillion won. By item, online shopping of food and beverages advanced 27.3 percent on-year to 2.67 trillion won, also a record high, as an increasing number of people used online platforms to prepare for Chuseok, or the Korean fall harvest celebration. This year’s Chuseok fell on Sept. 10. Online purchases of travel and transportation services more than doubled on-year to 1.87 trillion won in August to hit an all-time monthly high. The growth came as eased virus curbs prompted people to do more outdoor activities, particularly in the summer vacation season. Online transactions of clothing, sporting and other fashion items all grew in August amid eased virus curbs, the data showed. But those food delivery services declined 7.7 percent on-year to 2.23 trillion won in August, as more chose to dine out amid increased outdoor activities, the agency said. Purchases made through smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices grew 17.8 percent on-year to 3.23 trillion won. Mobile shopping took up 74.7 percent of the total value of online shopping, up 1.2 percentage points on-year, the data showed. (Yonhap)

What Anna Kournikova Eats In A Day The List
What Anna Kournikova Eats In A Day The List
What Anna Kournikova Eats In A Day – The List https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-anna-kournikova-eats-in-a-day-the-list/ Tinseltown/Shutterstock Anna Kournikova is passionate about health — and she has the background to prove it. As the Russian athlete revealed on The Graham Norton Show, she started playing six hours of tennis per day when she was just 5 years old. By the age of 14, she was playing in professional tournaments. According to the WTA, by the year 2000, Kournikova was ranked as one of the 10 best women’s tennis players in the world. Looking back on this time, Kournikova remembers gleaning tons of information about healthy eating. As she told Women’s Health, “Being a professional athlete my whole life, I’ve learned so much about nutrition and exercise and working out and keeping in shape. And [I] really wanted to share all that knowledge and experience that I’ve gained over all these years traveling around the world and working with the best nutritionists … with the best coaches.” Following the end of her WTA career in 2003 (per WTA), Kournikova dedicated herself to educating people about the importance of nutrition. CBS reports that Kournikova served as a celebrity coach for the hit weight loss reality series “The Biggest Loser.” She also joined forces with the nonprofit organization “Got Breakfast?” to promote healthy eating among students. In an interview with South Florida media group Brockzilla Productions, Kournikova expressed: “The body is like a machine. You have to … refuel and really nurture your body.”  Anna Kournikova doesn’t skip breakfast Kathy Hutchins/Shutterstock It’s no secret that Anna Kournikova believes in starting her day strong. On The Lorraine Show (per Page Six), Kournikova’s long-term partner Enrique Iglesias once joked that the couple enjoys time between the sheets in lieu of a morning meal. “That’s exactly what I do for breakfast,” the singer famously exclaimed. However, despite Iglesias’ wisecracks, Kournikova’s morning routine involves way more than just … physical activity. She says breakfast plays an important role when it comes to pursuing a healthy lifestyle.  In an interview with NBC, Kournikova revealed her opinion that good nutrition starts in the morning. When asked what people can do to start improving their nutrition, the tennis powerhouse replied: “Everything starts from breakfast.”  Through her partnership with the nonprofit organization “Got Breakfast?”, Kournikova has encouraged school-aged children to start their day right. In a 2007 speech at the foundation’s awards ceremony, the Russian athlete expressed her belief that eating breakfast can sharpen one’s mental state: “I am a firm believer that the first step to improving well-being is with good nutrition[.] … When millions of students across the country are not taking part in breakfast, they are missing out on the opportunity to perform their best at school.” She believes in eating a variety of foods Clive Brunskill/Getty Images Anna Kournikova might be passionate about health, but she isn’t exactly religious when it comes to following a specific diet. Rather than sticking to a strict meal regimen, the tennis star enjoys a variety of foods. In a 2011 interview with Elle, Kournikova said she doesn’t adhere to just one food group. “I definitely do love sweets. And salty stuff,” she told the outlet.  Ultimately, Kournikova aims to strike a sense of balance when it comes to enjoying different foods. As the Russian athlete told Maria Menounos on Extra, she doesn’t believe in controlling every single bite that goes into one’s mouth. “I definitely do believe in everything in moderation,” Kournikova explained. “I think the more you restrict, the more you’ll want something. And then you’ll overdo it. So, I definitely believe in moderation and balance.” Although Kournikova has supported several different foods in her adult life, she wasn’t able to enjoy such balanced meals throughout her childhood. Since she was born in the Soviet Union, Kournikova was raised in an environment that lacked many types of fruits. In 2009, she opened up about her childhood on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.” “[W]hen I was 9 years old … I came to Florida, and I saw bananas.” According to Kournikova, bananas were rare in Russia at the time. Seeing the fruit stateside made her feel like “a kid in a candy store.” Anna enjoys several small meals throughout the day Featureflash Photo Agency/Shutterstock While Anna Kournikova is a huge fan of breakfast, she isn’t equally enamored with the rest of the meals. In fact, the retired athlete has confessed that she isn’t prone to eating three big meals per day. As she divulged in a 2011 conversation with Elle, “I find that it’s important to eat smaller meals often.”  According to Kournikova, the goal of these smaller meals is getting as many benefits from the food as possible. In an interview with Women’s Health, she opened up about what she hopes to gain from her diet. “[My food choices have] been really about energy, maintaining good energy. I still lead a very, very active lifestyle, so it’s still been about really healthy nutrition,” the star athlete said, adding that this mindset isn’t exactly new for her. “Being a professional tennis player for most of my life, you know, I really had to use my body as my tool and food and nutrition as fuel to be able to perform,” she told the outlet. Perhaps because of this focus on energy, Kournikova says her favorite snacks are packed with healthy fats. “My favorite healthy snack on the go would be string cheese or almonds,” she told Women’s Health. She also revealed a penchant for pizza, albeit one that includes complex carbs: “My favorite guilty pleasure food is probably whole-wheat pizza, [or] some kind of carb.” The tennis star isn’t afraid to enjoy carbs Sodel Vladyslav/Shutterstock It’s safe to say that carbohydrates don’t have the best reputation among celebrities. Megan Fox once told E! News that she doesn’t eat any kind of carb, which for her means: “[n]o crackers, no pretzels, no chips.” Similarly, Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook “It’s All Good: Delicious, Easy Recipes That Will Make You Look Good and Feel Great” (via USA Today) famously refers to time periods when her “family is not eating pasta, bread, or processed grains.” Anna Kournikova wants absolutely none of that anti-carb talk. In an interview with Elle, the Russian athlete had no problem sharing her love for starches and grains. “I love carbs, potatoes, and pasta,” she told the outlet. And the tennis player’s favorite carbohydrate-based eats don’t stop there. As she revealed on Extra, “I love pizza. I love chocolate. And, you know, it’s the portion … It’s not about something specific [that makes your lifestyle healthy or not] … But I definitely like french fries.” While celebrity culture has a tendency to demonize carbohydrates, Kournikova views carbs as an essential part of her diet. In a conversation with Reader’s Digest (via Beef Magazine), Kournikova explained that the food group gives her the energy she needs on the court. “When it comes to food following an intense workout, [I need to eat] all the carbohydrate choices, like bananas, oranges, or whole-wheat pasta if I need more fuel to keep going,” she said. Anna Kournikova doesn’t believe in guilt after eating Noel Vasquez/Getty Images Although Anna Kournikova has used the phrase “guilty pleasure” in the past, she doesn’t particularly like the term. The tennis player doesn’t think people should feel bad for simply enjoying food. During a 2011 segment of Extra, Maria Menounos asked Kournikova: “So, what’s your guilty pleasure?” The tennis star replied without missing a beat: “I don’t think pleasures are guilty.”  According to Kournikova’s opinion, pleasures should be, well, pleasurable. “That’s why it’s, like, a pleasure. You should enjoy it. You shouldn’t be guilty about it,” she elaborated in the same interview. Because of this food-positive philosophy, Kournikova doesn’t think people should resist the occasional indulgence. When Maria Menounos asked the tennis player, “What happens when you want a Snickers bar?” (via Extra), Kournikova responded candidly. “You can have a Snickers [bar],” she told the journalist. “I believe in moderation.”  In Kournikova’s personal life, these occasional indulgences manifest in the form of sweet treats. And restrictive eating isn’t a practice that Kournikova attempts or supports. “I will have a little piece of chocolate every day, or every other day,” she divulged in an interview with Elle. “Being ‘good’ [at sticking to a diet] all the time is not realistic.” In Kournikova’s view, there’s nothing wrong with simply enjoying food. She recommends eating whole foods While Anna Kournikova supports the occasional indulgence, she also hopes people will start eating healthier. For the professional athlete, however, “eating healthy” doesn’t mean forgoing a certain food group, but trying to fuel one’s body with natural ingredients. In a 2011 interview with NBC, the star athlete explained which foods she finds best for nurturing one’s body. “[F]or nutrition … It’s eating healthier, whole foods and not as much processed foods,” she told the outlet. In practice, Kournikova tries to follow this philosophy by making healthy foods available to herself throughout the day. As she told Spry Living, “I usually take yogurt, fruit, peanut butter, or hummus with me when I know I’m going to have a busy day. It allows me to have a healthy snack and not just grab something on the run.” According to the tennis star, though, eating more whole foods doesn’t mean avoiding pleasure. “I also try to eat more fresh whole and unprocessed foods … [I]f I know I’m going to have pizza for dinner, I fill up on veggies and protein during the day,” she elaborated. Kournikova’s penchant for whole foods doesn’t just apply to snack time. For her post-workout meals, the sports star enjoys heavier f...

Bills – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nfl-week-4-grades-49ers-earn-a-for-dominating-win-over-rams-ravens-get-d-for-blowing-big-lead-vs-bills-cbs-sports/ Here are the Week 4 grades for every team that played on Sunday and Monday Oct 3, 2022 at 11:20 pm ET • 21 min read Getty Images If we’ve learned one thing about the Ravens this season, it’s that you should never turn off any game they’re playing in because there’s a good chance they’re going to blow a big lead.  For the second time in three weeks, the Ravens looked to have a win wrapped up, and for the second time in three weeks, they let that win slip away. In Week 2, the Ravens blew a 21-point lead in the fourth quarter against the Dolphins. This time around, the Ravens blew a 17-point lead in a wild 23-20 loss to the Bills.  It’s hard to say which loss stings more, but it might be the latest one because of how it went down. With 4:16 left to play, the Ravens were facing a fourth-and-goal at Buffalo’s 2-yard line, and at that point, they had a chance to attempt a field goal. However, John Harbaugh decided to go for the touchdown and the decision ended up backfiring in a big way: Lamar Jackson threw an interception.  It was an interesting play call considering the Ravens offense had struggled for most of the second half. Also, the Ravens had failed to score on the one-yard line and the four-yard line on the two plays prior to their fourth-down attempt.  Overall, the Ravens offense pulled a disappearing act over the final two-and-a-half quarters. After taking a 20-3 lead with 3:39 left in the second quarter, Baltimore wouldn’t score again.  If Harbaugh had chosen to kick the field goal, then the Ravens would have held a 23-20 lead with roughly four minutes left and although that doesn’t guarantee that Baltimore would have won, you feel a lot better about your chances of winning if you have the lead with under four minutes left to play.  “I felt like it gave us the best chance to win the game,” Harbaugh said following the game about his decision to go for it. “I was very confident in our defense’s ability to stop them down there with the ball at the 2-yard line, so we have them backed up if we don’t get it.” Unlike the loss to the Dolphins, there was definitely some visible frustration from the Ravens late in this game. Things got so bad that Marcus Peters actually went after Harbaugh to exchange words with him.  It’s easy to understand why the Ravens were frustrated: Their offense fell apart in the second half and their defense couldn’t stop the Bills over the game’s final two quarters.  Over the course of their franchise history, the Ravens are now 101-5 in any game where they’ve led by at least 17 points. The ugly part is that two of those five losses have come over the past three weeks.  Alright, let’s get to the grades for every game from Week 4. Dr. No Turns 60: The Quirky Bond Movie – Tilt Magazine https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dr-no-turns-60-the-quirky-bond-movie-tilt-magazine/ Dr. No Turns 60: A Retrospective As James Bond says in 2015’s Spectre while ensnared in Ernst Stavro Blofeld’s Moroccan lair: Tempus fugit. October 5th, 2022 marks the 60th, yes, the 60th anniversary of the James Bond film franchise. Few series’ can claim to have lasted as long as that started by American producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Canadian-born Harry Saltzman when they agreed to translate Ian Fleming’s novel, ”Dr. No,” from novel to screen. Many rivals have lasted a long time, but a significant portion of them, especially in the past couple of decades, go dormant for several years, only to resurface after an extended hibernation. Bond, on the other hand, consistently produces content. Dr. No (DN) premiered at the London Pavilion and started the series that as recently as one year ago saw its 25th outing, No Time to Die, roar across movie screens internationally.  The logical thought process when looking back at the relatively modest franchise premier is to highlight the ingredients that would eventually become series mainstays. Directed by Terrence Young, starring Sean Connery as Bond, Ursula Andress as Honey Rider, and Joseph Wiseman as the eponymous antagonist, the original 007 cinematic adventure is certainly infused with stylistic and storytelling decisions that make up tried, tested, and true Bondian DNA. The suaveness, the international intrigue, the women, the guns, the action, etc. Since it was the filmmaker’s first effort at adapting Ian Fleming’s literary hero, they hadn’t honed a style. Furthermore, given that DN is from 1962, it stands to reason that some filmmaking techniques differed back then.  Credit: EON/DANJAQ To celebrate Dr. No’s 60th anniversary, Tilt Magazine looks back at the film’s more peculiar and unique qualities. What are some of the things that make it stand apart, either because the template hadn’t been ironed out or simply because movies were different back in the 60s? Starting With a Bang Pre-title Sequence Bond fans, casual and ardent alike, love watching the first few minutes of a new 007 adventure. After James Bond walks across the screen in a while little dot (a graphical representation of a gun’s barrel, hence the terminology of “gunbarrel scene”) and shoots in the audience’s direction, blood trickles down and viewers are whisked to an undisclosed mission. From there, audiences are treated to some action and fun before the film’s proper story begins. In Bond parlance, this is referred to as the pre-title sequence (as in: “rank the Bond pre-title sequences”). Credit: EON/DANJAQ DN plays its cards differently, if only because director Young and company had no template to work from. Simply put, there is no pre-title sequence. Seconds after the blood starts oozing from the top of the screen, the famous James Bond theme erupts and the credits are showcased in colourfully kaleidoscopic fashion courtesy of Maurice Binder. It wouldn’t be until the next movie, From Russia with Love, that 007 films would begin with a thrilling action scene. Two Actors Playing Bond? That’s right. There are two actors seen on screen playing James Bond in DN. In fact, Sean Connery is the second actor in the movie to play the part. This isn’t a cheat. The man portraying Bond in the aforementioned gunbarrel scene is not the famed Scotsman. Rather, his stunt double Bob Simmons walks right to left before firing at his would-be assassin.  Title Song Singer Traditionally Bond films get a popular music artist to belt out a ballad or rock tune that accompanies the opening credits, making the experience feel like its own music video of sorts. As previously established, it is the main Bond theme everyone knows that blasts on the soundtrack. If that wasn’t enough, there are no fewer than three tracks that play over the credits. The Bond theme eventually fades out, replaced with some Jamaican dance music, which itself fades into a calypso rendition of Three Blind Mice! Soak in the Local Flavour Jamaican Rhythm In the laundry list of ingredients that should feature in a Bond adventure is travel to exotic, sexy locations, or very dangerous locations. Missions of the past few decades have taken the British super spy to multiple locations per film. The last time Bond went head-to-head with his foes in as few as two places was in 1989’s Licence to Kill. That was 32 years ago.  Back in the franchise’s youth, the filmmakers took 007 to a single international territory. For DN, the adventure is set in Jamaica, which was where Fleming had set the novel’s story, in addition to where the author spent his winters writing the books. This lends the early movies a different tone and especially a different pace from the ones that followed in the 80s onwards. Can anyone really attest to having a solid feel for Bregenz after watching Quantum of Solace? The same cannot be said of Jamaica, which is where 80% of the first movie takes place. Keeping the British End up It’s not only the fact that viewers get to soak in the warm Jamaican sun and its beaches when enjoying DN. The country earned its independence in August of 1962, even though it’s still officially a member of the Commonwealth. Keep in mind that the film was shot in the winter of ’62. When Terence Young and his crew completed their on-location work, Jamaica was still months away from its big day. As such, there are plenty of references to the island’s status as a British colony. People play bridge at the Queen’s Club, and Bond’s contact at the Governor’s House is a typically polite, astute, Caucasian fellow who speaks in the Queen’s eloquent English.  The Home Team The Quartermaster Few scenes in Bond movies are as beloved as those when the protagonist and his famous gadget man, Q, banter back and forth as the exasperated Quartermaster (hence, Q) tries his best to make Bond concentrate and understand how to operate his newfangled weapons. All the 007 actors have had tremendous chemistry with their respective Q counterparts, including Daniel Craig with Ben Wishaw. First-time viewers may be surprised to discover that no character dubbed “Q” appears in DN. Instead, there is an armourer played by Peter Burton. At M’s request, he hands James the now famous Walther PPK, replacing the secret agent’s preferred Beretta. There is no banter between the two. In fact, the scene plays out very much as if the weapons specialist and 007 hardly know each other at all.  Credit: EON/DANJAQ Working for MI7 Which fan of the series does not know that James Bond, agent 007, works for His Majesty’s Secret Service, aka the Secret Intelligence Service, aka MI6? Well, apparently that’s not the case in DN. Bernard Lee’s M very clearly states that he is head of MI7 while briefing Bond on his Caribbean-bound mission. Very little information is available to us that would explain exactly why the number 7 is used instead of 6. Of note, there was, at least for a brief while, such a department as MI7 in British Intelligence.  Bond, James Bond You Know My Name Ah yes, the famous line that marked in cinematic history. Few character introductions are as iconic as the strange way in which agent 007 introduces himself. Surname, then given name followed by surname once more. The way in which it’s said for the first time ever is not only superbly cool for its 1960s, smoky casino setting (with the Bond theme playing), but for the context in which the line is delivered.  It’s a detail one might not realize until they’ve seen the film multiple times or have it pointed out to them. Everyone gets so excited when Sean Connery says “Bond, James Bond” whilst lighting his cigarette, many forget he is replicating the way his soon-to-be girlfriend says her name. The woman seated across the chemin de fer table, played by Eunice Gayson, is told by un unseen Bond that, given her losses, her courage is admired, Ms…? “Trench, Sylvia Trench. I admire your luck, Mr…?” You know the rest.  Credit: EON/DANJAQ Absent Aston It seems like in nearly every new film agent 007 gets to ride his beloved grey 1964 Aston Martin DB5. The brand and that model are synonymous with the film franchise to the point where, as beautifully crafted as the luxury vehicle is, few would complain if Bond drove something else in the next iteration. Bond doesn’t do much driving in DN. The one time he’s behind the wheel, he evades pursuers in a 1961 Alpine Sunbeam. A sporty, cool-looking little car with an open roof, it’s a great machine to joyride Jamaica in. It doesn’t hold the iconic status of the DB5, nor is it tricked out with any optional extras, unless one considers Bond’s extraordinary driving skills as a gadget.  A Super Spy’s Living Quarters Few of the films take viewers into the hero’s personal home in London. After all, Bond is a man of action, someone constantly called upon to save Britain and civilization as we know it. Given that most of the films open with 007 mid-mission, then a briefing with his chief M, followed by international intrigue and explosions, it is forgivable for not even thinking about what Bond’s home looks like.  Credit: EON/DANJAQ Of the 25 canonical entries, the protagonist is seen in his London living quarters only three times, the first being in DN. It’s a handsomely decorated flat, at least from what viewers are privy to. The scene comes early in the film after Bond leaves M’s office. Only the entrance hall and what looks to be a living room are visible, but they have a relatively homely feel about them.  Gadget Counter Some people can’t get enough of 007’s arsenal of gadgets, while others prefer films in which the secret agent relies on his wits more so than easy technological cheats. The latter group can rest easy with the original 1962 picture, as Bond is equipped exclusively with a Geiger counter. Not even one hidden in his watch, ...

Crypto Leaks Comments By Partner ‘Uniquely Stupid,’ Judge Says – Bloomberg Law https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-leaks-comments-by-partner-uniquely-stupid-judge-says-bloomberg-law/ A New York judge Monday called a Roche Freedman co-founding partner’s leaked comments boasting about his firm’s relationship with a crypto startup “uniquely stupid.” Katherine Polk Failla, a U.S. district judge for the Southern District of New York, also voiced concerns about the firm’s motivations for filing a class action accusing crypto exchange Bitfinex and affiliate Tether of market manipulation. She said she will decide within a week whether the firm should be booted from representing plaintiffs in the case. Monday’s hearing came more than a month after a website called Crypto Leaks released recordings of firm co-founder Kyle Roche discussing a tight relationship with Ava Labs, a blockchain developer. Roche has denied allegations that his firm has used litigation to target Ava Labs competitors. The recordings also showed Roche making disparaging remarks about class members in general and jurors. After the leak, defendants and Roche Freedman’s co-lead counsel—the law firms Selendy Gay Elsberg and Schneider Wallace—filed motions for the firm’s removal from the case. A different plaintiffs firm also urged Failla to reconsider its 2020 appointment of lead counsel in the matter. During the hearing, Roche Freedman name partner Devin Freedman acknowledged that Roche’s comments were “stupid,” but he argued there’s no evidence to support a charge that the firm brought a lawsuit to help Ava Labs. He claimed that the leaks were orchestrated by a defendant, which he did not name, in a separate action and that the firm should remain counsel because it has the most expertise on the underlying issues. Freedman said he and Roche began working on the lawsuit before Ava Labs was even in existence. To protect against the appearance of impropriety, Roche has been kicked off the firm’s class action practice and “walled off” from all existing class action cases, Freedman said. Lawyers for Bitfinex and Tether argued that the steps weren’t enough, claiming the videos raised serious concerns about whether the firm has abused the discovery process. Selendy Gay Elsberg and Schneider Wallace also requested the firm be removed from the matter, claiming it would eliminate a “distraction” created by the recordings. The firms, however, said they would have no issue working with Roche Freedman if the boutique remained on the case. Expats of the prominent litigation firm Boies Schiller started Roche Freedman in 2019 and it now has 25 lawyers in New York, Miami and Boston. The firm, among the most active in the crypto class action space, has filed more than a dozen lawsuits against crypto exchanges and token issuers on behalf of investors and has earned lead counsel status in many of them. The lawsuit against Bitfinex and Tether alleges they were part of a scheme to manipulate the cryptocurrency market and defraud investors. Some of the claims survived a motion to dismiss in 2021. Named plaintiffs in the Bitfinex/Tether action submitted declarations in September saying they wanted to continue to be represented by Roche Freedman.
