What I Heard (Read) This Weekend….Oct 3, 2022 – Press Pros Magazine https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-i-heard-read-this-weekend-oct-3-2022-press-pros-magazine/ Halfway through the high school football season, there’s a reality to what we’re watching that few admit to publicly.  That the empty seats we wrote about recently have nothing to do with the football, itself.  Rather, it’s the uncertainty of what lies ahead. I realize that there are many who believe like my grandmother, who always said, “If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all.” She was talking about people, of course…that if you can’t say something nice about someone keep your thoughts to yourself.  But it’s not always people, and I dare say that there’s many who believe…if there’s anything you don’t like you just suffer in silence!  We learn from birth, for instance, that you don’t talk about religion and politics. But there’s another realization that does beg discussion as to why so many kids are choosing not to participate in sports this fall – why schools are leaking athletes, and the culture of thinking that promotes it.  I wrote about it in our recent September 19 column on empty seats under the Friday night lights.  Readers responded, some of which we shared in last week’s ‘Reader Speaks’ post. And this past weekend – this past week – there was more response from readers who were more than a bit concerned about how, and if, we get the numbers back – kids playing sports, and people in the seats to watch them. A reality!  A lot of them question the current culture – inflation, the economy, and a general change in social priorities.  Some ask…are we even giving kids a chance to just be kids? “I’m sad about things that I didn’t used to feel,”  said one writer, from here in Miami County.  “I played sports to have fun.  It was encouraging.  But it’s not encouraging now when you see barely enough kids to have a team.” Some point to the topics we hear daily on the evening news.  The cost of things, and fear about whether it’s safe to even leave the house, even in the smallest communities. “It’s hard to trust.  You don’t know if you’re safe, even out in the country,”  wrote a reader from Gallia County. The economy, gas prices, and the feeling that things are generally upside down are making people speak up…who have NEVER before spoken! “Kids got a job during Covid and got out of the habit of playing sports,”  from an email following that September 19 column on empty seats.  “They want money.” It’s true.  Some now choose to work because they have a car and a phone, and the household budget can no longer support that.  Parents say…get a job.  So kids are working because there’s plenty of jobs, particularly in some smaller, rural districts.  They make money instead of  playing football – different priorities.  Not every community, of course.  But enough that you notice. Barcodes needed on phones to get into the games make it inconvenient for many senior citizens. That person wrote.  “Cash spends. Standing on the sidelines and waiting for a chance to play doesn’t put gas in the car.” Traditional priorities are on trial, with uncertainty over what comes next.  While some preach renewable energy…most favor renewing strong communities and traditional values;  of how do we get back to a predictable standard of living and a predictable future? “I can’t raise a family and run my house the way we’re headed,”  a neighbor shared recently.  “Progress doesn’t make sense when you can’t make progress at home.” Other issues would make you sad, as that writer suggested – forgiveness for college loans that means sharing the cost of paying back money you didn’t borrow; progress that doesn’t make sense when it stands in the way of progress at home. All of this casts a shadow on things taken for granted – traditions, even sports and the people who used to watch. “I don’t go to games because I can’t buy a ticket at the ticket booth,”  wrote another to last week’s ‘Reader Speaks’ post.  “If you’re a senior citizen it’s not that simple to go to a football game – not that easy to buy a ticket with your phone.” But it is to a teenager, who’s choosing whatever means necessary to pay for that phone.  Culture has won them over…which only adds to the fear, and uncertainty for the future. Grandma wouldn’t like it.  People with little good to say. And they’re more willing to say it…than they’ve ever been before!

16 Kitchen Products You Need For Cooking Holiday Dinner Bustle
16 Kitchen Products You Need For Cooking Holiday Dinner – Bustle https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/16-kitchen-products-you-need-for-cooking-holiday-dinner-bustle/ Cooking a multi-course meal for the holidays in a tiny kitchen might seem like a feat that requires absurd amounts of precision and finesse. But it is possible with some clever use of your space — and a plan for cooking your dishes in the right order so you’re not rushing at the last minute to serve your guests. “Holiday cooking can be a bit hectic, but if you have a list of the dishes you are preparing you can organize a well-executed holiday meal,” says Patti Delgado, executive chef at Vibrant, a restaurant in Houston, Texas. The good news is that you don’t have to leave all the cooking for the day of your occasion and can use some time leading up to your event to get things started. Read as: procrastination has no place here. “I always leave the main dishes (or protein dish) and also fresh items such as salads or pickled herbs for the day of the event,” Delgado says. “But I give myself a head start with sauces, vinaigrettes, and casseroles because they tend to develop deeper flavor [over time].” For these, she says you can make them three days in advance. For side dishes like compotes or pickled veggies, Delgado says you can make them five days in advance — just be sure to keep them fresh in an airtight container. On the day of the event, Delgado advises you cook the proteins first before any other dishes so that they have some time to rest before you carve them up and serve. Now that you’ve got a kitchen plan, here’s a list of space-saving gadgets that will make your small kitchen seem more spacious. A cute canister for spoons, spatulas, and whisks might seem tidy but it takes up valuable counter space that you’ll need when preparing a holiday meal. Attach a pair of these rotating hooks to the underside of your cabinets to reclaim space and keep instruments at the ready. Top Review: “I like it, they keep the utensils up out of the way. Great for keeping clutter down.” If you’re running out of counter space and need to put a hot pan or a platter out to rest, try this silicone mat as a heat-resistant trivet. When you’re not cooking up a storm for the holidays, you can also use it as a regular dish-drying mat. Top Review: “I bought this to protect the edge of my black granite at the sink. But it has so many uses. It is a drain for dishes, a hot plate, and a workspace. Silicone is a wonderful product.” Whether you’re baking up multiple pies or batches of cookies or simply need another place to store a hot dish until it gets to the table, this three-tier cooling rack does the job. Set it up on a table or countertop and you can stack three dishes or pans without taking up a ton of space — you can also use just one rack if that’s all you need. Top Review: “I love that they are stackable and if you only need one then you don’t have to have all three out. Ideal for cooling cookies and cakes.” Your stove is the workhorse of the kitchen. Put it to good use even when the burners are off with this bamboo stovetop cover. Simply place the board over cool burners — it works on gas and electric stoves — to convert your appliance into more prep space. Top Review: “This adds a nice amount of counter space for our apartment’s smaller kitchen.“ Cutting boards are a key tool for any at-home chef. If you’re working on multiple courses, you’ll likely have several boards going at once. This over-the-sink cutting board lengthens your counter space while also giving you easy access to washing vegetables and dumping peels into the sink or disposal for quick cleanup. Top Review: “Chunky, well made and durable…yes it’s [a] chopping board but this is a good one compared to others I have owned.” Even with various digital devices with timers, an old-school kitchen timer makes it easy to keep you and your food on a schedule. This two-pack digital timer helps to keep track of multiple dishes, plus it’s magnetic — just pop it on your refrigerator and it’s go time. Top Review: “This is a handy set of digital timers that work well in cooking.” Annoyed by the gap between your cabinets and appliances? This slimline rollout shelf unit gives you practically a whole other cabinet’s worth of storage. Use it to store dry goods, spices, cooking oils, utensils, and more. Slide it out when you’re cooking and slide it right back in when you’re done to make the most efficient use of your kitchen space. Top Review: “[T]his is perfect! it turned this awkward space into a usable space.” Clear up the clutter on your counters with this multi-tiered corner bamboo shelf. You can adjust the shelves in the direction you want to quickly organize oil, bottles, spices, kitchen utensils, and more. Top Review: “This is perfect for the corner of the counter in my tiny kitchen. I have so much more room now!” You’ve likely seen the Always Pan pop up in your social media feed — we’ve even spotted it in a cameo in Hulu’s hit show The Bear. This multi-use cookware also deserves a spot in your kitchen. The Always Pan replaces a frying pan, sauté pan, steamer, and skillet, among others. Plus, it comes in beautiful, bright colors that you won’t mind leaving out on your stovetop when not in use — even though you will be able to fit it comfortably in your cabinets, too. Top Review: “Love it! So far it’s my go-to pan for almost everything.” It’s natural to want to have your go-to spices within easy reach when you need a pinch of this and a dash of that. This magnetic spice rack sticks right on your refrigerator so you won’t have to clog up the cabinets or countertop with bottles — plus there’s a hook so you can hang a spoon, cooking mitt, or another small utensil. Top Review: “Very pleased with the strength of the magnets on these shelves. They can hold a lot of weight, no problem.” Why have five utensils when you can have this one that works as a slotted spoon, solid spoon, spatula, turner, and slicer? You just cleared out your utensil caddy thanks to this handy kitchen gadget. Top Review: “The best kitchen utensil I never knew I needed.” If you’re dishing up pasta, you know that a traditional colander can take over your sink. This pot strainer does all the work of a regular colander with only a fraction of the size. It’s good for pots, pans, and bowls — just snap it on and pour out the liquid. You could even get a couple of these handy gadgets if you use them often and they still wouldn’t take up as much space as a regular colander. Top Review: “Clips easily to all of my pots and works perfectly as it should.” Your kitchen backsplash isn’t just for decoration anymore. Put it to use with this elegant-looking magnetized knife holder that can hold up a butcher block’s worth of knives. Your countertop will thank you for the breathing room. Top Review: “Not only is the wood a beautiful addition to my kitchen, the magnet is powerful enough to securely hold a 10-inch, three-pound chef’s knife and four other heavy steel knives with zero wobble nor give.” If your utensil caddy is stuffed to the point that it’s hard to reach that ladle or spatula, try this compact standing tool set. This sleek set of five nylon utensils nestles into the ladle, which is magnetized to an upright stand that takes up minimal space. Top Review: “This ended up being perfect for my small student apartment with minimal counter space. They are durable, easy to clean, and look great.” This over-the-sink colander makes it easy to wash vegetables and fruit and even drain cooked pasta. You can even use it to dry kitchen utensils after you’ve washed them to relieve clutter from your dish drying rack. Top Review: “This product is great! It’s super easy and versatile.” This silicone-coated stainless steel gadget doubles as an over-the-sink dish drying rack and a heat-resistant trivet, so you’ve got yet another place to put that hot pot of food as you’re preparing your meal. Roll it up when you’re finished and stow it in a drawer until next time. Top Review: “This roll-up dish drying rack has become a necessity in my kitchen! I don’t have a lot of counter space so turning a portion of my sink as a drying space for large items has been wonderful.” Source: Patti Delgado, executive chef at Vibrant.

Kim Kardashian Pays $1.26m Over Crypto ‘pump And Dump’ – BBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/kim-kardashian-pays-1-26m-over-crypto-pump-and-dump-bbc/ Image source, Getty Images Kim Kardashian has agreed to pay a $1.26m (£1.12m) fine for advertising EthereumMax on her Instagram page. The US Securities and Exchange Commission said the reality TV star had received $250,000 for advertising the cryptocurrency, without disclosing she had been paid to do so. She also agreed not to promote crypto asset securities for three years. Her lawyer told BBC News: “Ms Kardashian is pleased to have resolved this matter with the SEC.” The lawyer said: “Kardashian fully cooperated with the SEC from the very beginning and she remains willing to do whatever she can to assist the SEC in this matter. “She wanted to get this matter behind her to avoid a protracted dispute. “The agreement she reached with the SEC allows her to do that so that she can move forward with her many different business pursuits.” Ms Kardashian, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr, basketball player Paul Pierce and EthereumMax’s creators were sued by investors in January. The legal action alleged they had collaborated to “misleadingly promote and sell” the cryptocurrency in a “pump and dump” scheme designed to inflate the price before selling to investors. EthereumMax disputed the allegations at the time. In spite of its name, EthereumMax has no legal or business connection with the Ethereum cryptocurrency. Anyone can create a crypto coin. All you need is a few pounds, a YouTube tutorial and a funky name. This month alone, dozens of new tokens will be launched, with creators promising their coin will be the next big thing. With little intrinsic value to the product, marketing is key – and as in many modern industries, celebrities can be the make or break. EthereumMax put a huge amount of money into snapping up celebrities such as Kim Kardashian – and at first, it seemed to be working out. But as with many crypto coins, the fall was as dramatic as the rise. Even if EthereumMax had retained the value it gained after the celebrity pump, regulators both in the US and UK were extremely uncomfortable about the marketing of the coin. The crypto industry is still largely unregulated – but Kim Kardashian joins a growing list of people and companies being punished for shilling for these highly risky products. ‘Highly speculative’ Gary Gensler, who chairs the SEC, called the case a “reminder” celebrity endorsement did not necessarily make a product worth investing in. “Ms Kardashian’s case also serves as a reminder to celebrities and others that the law requires them to disclose to the public when and how much they are paid to promote investing in securities,” he said. Later, in a YouTube video about crypto investment, he added: “Celebrity endorsements… don’t mean that an investment product is right for you or even, frankly, that it’s legitimate. “Even if a celebrity endorsement is genuine, each investment has its own risk and opportunities. “When it comes to crypto, remember many of these are highly speculative assets. “You may be wondering if it’s right for you or even if it might be a scam.” Figure caption, Warning: Third party content may contain adverts

In Bid For New Long-Range Rockets, Ukraine Offers US Targeting Oversight – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/in-bid-for-new-long-range-rockets-ukraine-offers-us-targeting-oversight-cnn/ Washington CNN  —  In an effort to overcome Biden administration resistance to providing it with a new set of powerful, long-range rocket systems, the Ukrainian government is now offering the US full and ongoing visibility into their list of intended Russian targets, multiple officials familiar with the discussions tell CNN. The remarkable transparency essentially gives the US veto power over Ukrainian targeting of Russia and is meant to convince the administration that providing the critical weapons would not lead to strikes inside Russian territory, which the US fears would escalate the war and draw it directly into a conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin. At issue are the Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, surface-to-surface missiles that can fly around 200 miles (300 kilometers), about four times the distance of the rockets used by the HIMARS mobile systems the US began sending to Ukraine four months ago. Despite Ukraine’s proposal, the Biden administration still has not approved the new long-range ATACMS weapons, and argues that Ukraine is doing well with the HIMARS systems it currently has. In fact on Wednesday the administration announced funding for 18 more HIMARS for Ukraine, bringing the total to over 30 US systems. There are also concerns inside the administration that providing the longer-range ATACMS weapons would cross a red line in the eyes of Moscow, which would see the US becoming “a direct party to the conflict.” 03:00 – Source: CNN US defense secretary responds to Putin’s nuclear threat But that red line is becoming murkier with Friday’s annexation of four Ukraine territories by Russia. The US has stated that it will support the use of western weapons inside those zones even if Russia now considers it part of its official territory. Still, the idea of taking a more active role in discussions over Ukrainian targeting raises American fears of being seen as more involved than it would like. Ukrainian officials have kept the longer-range ATACMS at the top of their wish list, saying they are ready to be as “open as needed” to assuage American concerns and have already listed for the US precisely what they intend to go after. “We essentially described exactly what specific targets we need to hit on our territory which are not reachable with what we have now,” said a senior Ukrainian official. “The categories of targets are clear and do not change.” Among them would be more distant Russian logistical lines, air defense and bases, as well as ammunition depots in Ukraine’s east and south, including Crimea, which have become a regular target of the current US-provided rocket systems whose munitions have a maximum range of around 50 miles (80 kilometers). The new rockets would also allow Ukraine to strike deeper into Crimea to target the launching points of Russia’s Iranian drones, something it cannot currently do, according to an American source familiar with the country’s requests. In pressing the Americans for the longer-range rockets, Ukrainian officials have also dismissed concerns that they would strike Russian territory, arguing they have not done so with the HIMARS systems despite having the range to in some cases. “We gave assurances that we will not do it [with the HIMARS] and we did not,” the Ukrainian official said. “I think the problem is for the US to get over the psychological threshold and approve the [ATACMS] capability.” While the Biden administration has not ruled out sending the ATACAMS eventually, for now they are “low reward and high risk,” according to an official familiar with the discussions. After much lobbying and discussion, Ukraine has made effective use of the HIMARS systems it began receiving in May, particularly in its recent counteroffensive in the east. US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin made specific mention of the HIMARS systems in discussing Ukraine’s recent battlefield success in the Kherson region of the country during an exclusive interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria that aired Sunday on “Fareed Zakaria GPS.” Austin said Ukrainian forces have used “technology like HIMARS” and employed it in the “right way” to “conduct attacks on things like logistical stores and command and control, that’s taking away – taken away significant capability from the Russians.” US officials have argued the current precision HIMARS munitions, called GMLRS, offer plenty of firepower and range for Ukraine’s current needs with the ability to strike the vast majority of Russian targets. “We believe that we’re providing the Ukrainians with the range of capabilities that are commensurate with the fight that they’re executing based on the requirements that they’ve identified for us,” the Pentagon’s Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Sasha Baker said Friday. “We really believe that the most critical requirements for Ukraine right now is the GMLRS munition that can reach most of the targets that they have identified within Ukrainian territory,” said Baker. Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian land and Putin’s nuclear saber-rattling has done little to deter western support for Ukraine’s attacks against them to re-claim territory and many officials point to Ukraine’s repeated strikes in Crimea – taken by Russia in 2014 – as evidence that Russia’s threats are bluster. “Ukraine has the absolute right to defend itself throughout its territory, including to take back the territory that has been illegally seized in one way or another by Russia,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Thursday in response to a question from CNN. “Because there is no change at all in the territory that is being annexed by the Russians as a matter for us or for the Ukrainians, the Ukrainians will continue to do what they need to do to get back the land that has been taken from them. We will continue to support them in that effort.”

Macau Casinos Suffer Another Dismal Month, Gaming Down 50 Percent – Casino.Org News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/macau-casinos-suffer-another-dismal-month-gaming-down-50-percent-casino-org-news/ Posted on: October 3, 2022, 07:46h.  Last updated on: October 3, 2022, 07:48h. Macau casino operators continue to bleed cash keeping their multibillion-dollar integrated casino resorts open despite an inadequate number of visitors traveling to the Chinese enclave. Macau Chief Executive Ho Iat Seng addresses the media during the 73rd anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China on October 1, 2022. Macau casinos need more gamblers to return their gaming revenue numbers closer to their pre-pandemic levels. (Image: Macau Daily News) Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau said casinos won just MOP2.96 billion (US$370 million) in September 2022. While that’s a 35% improvement on August when the casinos were forced to close for 12 days amid the region’s worst community COVID-19 outbreak of the entire pandemic, the nearly MOP3 billion in gaming revenue represents a 50% reduction from September 2021. Compared with September 2019, Macau’s gaming revenue was down 87% last month. Through nine months of 2022, gross gaming revenue (GGR) in what was the world’s richest gaming market prior to the pandemic stands at approximately $3.94 billion. Through nine months in 2019, the six casino operators had collectively won more than $27.2 billion. Borders Blocked Macau casinos had hoped 2022 would be different. But in the year’s nine operating months, the local gaming industry bettered 2021 only once. That came back in February when GGR exceeded February 2021 by 6%. The eight other months experienced drastic year-over-year declines, as China tightened leisure and most non-essential travel throughout the mainland because of COVID-19 concerns. In the eight months that experienced drops, GGR was down on average 59% compared with the same month in 2021. China has preserved its “zero-COVID” policy that greatly limits daily life in regions where new coronavirus outbreaks are detected. Macau, a Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic that obeys China’s “one country, two systems” principle, has largely followed the mainland’s “zero-COVID” arrangement. China has embraced lockdowns for their success in stamping out cases, with pressure to swiftly contain flareups building ahead of this month’s Party Congress, where President Xi Jinping is expected to secure a precedent-busting third term in power,” Hong Kong-based journalist Shirley Zhao wrote in Forbes. “While some of the recent shutdowns have been relatively short — Chengdu endured two weeks — others have lasted for 40 days or more,” Zhao added. Visitor Rebound China is currently celebrating Golden Week, the country’s week-long National Day holiday that prior to the pandemic brought around 900,000 travelers to the casino hub during the first week of October. Though the 2022 holiday will be another considerably scaled-back celebration, analysts are forecasting a better monthly performance for gaming. The consensus among gaming analysts covering Macau predicts about a 9% year-over-year GGR slide in October. That would put October 2022 casino win at approximately $491.8 million. Macau expects a more significant influx of visitors next month when China plans to resume its e-visa scheme to allow mainlanders to more easily visit Macau. The planned resumption of e-visas through the Individual Visit Scheme (IVS) is what Macau’s six casino giants have long been waiting for. Of the 27.9 million people who traveled to Macau in 2019, 13.1 million travelers gained entry authorization by way of IVS.

There Is Crying In Baseball For Colonie Mom Of Mariners Brian OKeefe Times Union
There Is Crying In Baseball For Colonie Mom Of Mariner’s Brian O’Keefe – Times Union https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/there-is-crying-in-baseball-for-colonie-mom-of-mariners-brian-okeefe-times-union/ Susan O’Keefe of Colonie watched her son achieve his childhood dream this weekend. The family’s story is easily one of the Capital Region’s most heartwarming athletic tales of 2022. When Brian O’Keefe got his first major league hit after eight years in baseball’s minor leagues, many in the crowd of 42,512 at the Seattle Mariners’ T-Mobile Park gave the 29-year-old a standing ovation. His teammates in the dugout also erupted in cheers. And the tears started flowing. “You know they say there’s no crying in baseball. Yes, there is, for mom, there’s happy tears,” O’Keefe said after Saturday’s game. “It was just unbelievable to see your kid’s dream come true. My heart was racing, tears were in my eyes, we all teared up. I can’t even describe this.” Susan O’Keefe and I met as CBA moms in 2012. Her younger son Christopher was a year younger than my son and they played hockey together for the Brothers. At the time Brian was at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, playing Division I baseball after a stellar career at Colonie High. Throughout Brian’s life, Susan said she always knew his love of baseball and desire to excel was something unique. When he was young, Brian would beg her to go out and hit baseballs to him. She smacked endless grounders and pop flies when his brother Christopher wasn’t available and her husband Jack was traveling as a Division IAA football official. He started playing when he was 4 years old at Westland Hills. “I had bruises all over me,” she laughed. “Even as a kid before high school he would have a Little League game, and maybe not have a great game in his mind … he would come home and we had a net set up in our basement and he would hit off the tee … hundreds and hundreds of balls to improve his swing.” His first hit in the majors was a solid liner that landed in front of the left fielder for a single. The weekend was a whirlwind. At 2 a.m. on Friday, Jack’s cellphone rang. The initial fear of something being wrong with one of their kids was quickly supplanted by joy. Brian told them he was called up to replace one of the team’s catchers, who was going on paternity leave. O’Keefe was playing on the west coast at Triple-A Tacoma and was in the minor leagues for eight years after being drafted in the seventh round by the Cardinals in 2014. After spending five seasons in St. Louis’ system, O’Keefe joined the Mariners farm system. Now at the highest minor league level, he went to work behind the plate just 30 miles from the big league park. So close yet so far after many years of solid play, overcoming injuries, illness and disappointments. The Mariners put the right-handed catcher on notice in early September. He was told a call-up could happen anytime — given the uncertain timing of childbirth. Personal matters — including a wedding shower in Albany with his fiancée’s family — would have to be set aside when the call-up was official. But that isn’t always easy. A wedding shower for Emily, Brian’s fiancée, was already in the works. “He called us two weeks ago and said hey you might not be able to have Emily’s shower. I thought what am I going to do with all these people if we get the call? But we had the shower last weekend and it all worked out,” she said. Emily and Brian met at St. Joe’s and lived in the Philadelphia area for many years. The couple just bought a home in Raleigh, North Carolina, and plan to get married in November. The O’Keefes didn’t get much sleep after the call, making travel and dog-sitting arrangements. They booked a flight out of Albany at 12:30 and after a connection in Detroit they arrived on the west coast at 5:30 p.m. Seattle time. They dumped their bags and walked to the ballpark from their downtown hotel. They arrived a little late for Friday night’s game, but the timing of the rest of the weekend was impeccable. That night the Mariners clinched the team’s first postseason birth in 20 years when pinch-hitter Cal Raleigh hit a walk-off homer in the bottom of the ninth, setting off a wild celebration. “The families were allowed on the field with the team. When the players came out of the locker room let me tell you they were soaked with champagne,” O’Keefe said. The Mariners — still wearing goggles draped around their necks — ran around the field, hugging family members and slapping hands with fans. Group pictures were taken with families; selfies snapped with fans. The night ended with fireworks. It was then they learned Brian would earn his first Major League start as the team’s designated hitter the next day. They crashed in the hotel after midnight Pacific time ending a 24-hour whirlwind they will always treasure. Drained from Friday’s travel and excitement, there was no time to rest. Saturday was a 1 p.m. start and their son Christopher was flying in. Christopher, who works in the cruise industry, was in the midst of a two-week golf vacation in Phoenix with three fellow CBA graduates. MLB Network zoomed in on the family seated close to the field as Brian took his turn in the batter’s box. A questionable third-strike call ended his first at-bat. He left nothing to chance during his second at-bat, jumping on a first-pitch fastball. “I’ve had so many people reach out. Brian had to shut off his phone. To have the support and love from relatives and family and friends. It’s just been tremendous,” O’Keefe said. “He’s so happy we’re thrilled. Just to see your kid’s dream that he has worked so hard for for so long. It’s indescribable.” Postseason MLB shirts feature the phrase “October Rise” and Susan is pictured wearing one in a family photo in the tunnel outside the team locker room. For the O’Keefe family, the rise took them all the way to Cloud 9. Joyceb10bassett@gmail.com @joyceb10bassett A timesunion.com/ author/joyce-bassett

Weak Yen, Higher Costs Weigh On Japan Business Sentiment – The Associated Press – En Español https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/weak-yen-higher-costs-weigh-on-japan-business-sentiment-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ TOKYO (AP) — Business sentiment among large manufacturers worsened for the third straight quarter, a Bank of Japan survey showed Monday, as the world’s third largest economy grapples with rising costs, a weakening currency and slowing global demand. The headline measure for the “tankan,” measuring sentiment among large manufacturers, was plus 8, down from plus 9 the previous quarter. The tankan measures corporate sentiment by subtracting the number of companies saying business conditions are negative from those responding they are positive. Japan has been trying to fight deflation in recent years and has kept interest rates at near zero. Prices have been rising, but at a more modest pace than in other major economies, and the Bank of Japan has not followed the lead of other central banks in raising interest rates. That means the yen has weakened relative to the surging dollar. That makes exports of autos and electronics more competitive in overseas markets and raises the value of overseas earnings of big corporations like Toyota Motor Corp. But it also hits their bottom lines in sharply higher costs. The war in Ukraine has added to the problems for a resource-poor nation that imports almost all its oil, gas and coal. The dollar bought about 145 yen on Monday, up from 130-yen levels a few months ago and about 110 yen a year earlier. The tankan survey found that sentiment among large nonmanufacturers, such as service providers, improved to 14 from 13. That reflects a revival in the services sector as precautions against the spread of COVID-19 are relaxed. Japan has struggled with a sluggish economy for decades, but the stagnation worsened over the last two years with cutbacks in travel and supply shortages caused by the pandemic. After keeping its borders virtually closed for most of the past two years, Japan plans to begin allowing visa-free travel later this month, to tap into demand from foreign visitors eager to enjoy bigger purchasing power thanks to the cheaper yen. In a speech to lawmakers on Monday, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised to make the economy his top priority and promote measures that “maximize the merit of the weaker yen” to collect some 5 trillion yen ($34.5 billion) annually that may be spent by foreign tourists in Japan. ___ Yuri Kageyama is on Twitter https://twitter.com/yurikageyama

(AP) — Colorado fired football coach Karl Dorrell after an 0-5 start in which the Buffaloes have been blown out by more than 20 points in each game. The school announced the decision Sunday, a day after a 43-20 loss at Arizona. It’s only the fourth 0-5 start in the program’s history. Dorrell, 58, was brought in as a replacement when Mel Tucker bolted for Michigan State out of the blue in February 2020. Colorado waited to announce the news until after Dorrell had a chance to inform his staff and players. Offensive coordinator Mike Sanford will serve as interim coach. Best Cyber Monday Headphone Deals. What To Expect In 2022 PhoneArena
Best Cyber Monday Headphone Deals. What To Expect In 2022 PhoneArena
Best Cyber Monday Headphone Deals. What To Expect In 2022 – PhoneArena https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/best-cyber-monday-headphone-deals-what-to-expect-in-2022-phonearena/ Just like that, November 2022 is only a month away. It’s well-known for being the shopping season with the major Cyber Monday to think about — another discount bonanza, which typically focuses on tech gadgets in particular. Well, what a coincidence — we love tech gadgets! All retailers join in on the fun — from the large Best Buy and Walmart, to smaller (by comparison) outlets like B&H Photo and Video. Of course, the manufacturers themselves love to have you on their websited, so keeping an eye on store.samsung.com, electronics.sony.com, or even apple.com is also a good idea. Of course, Apple never admits to being a part of Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but it will announce some sort of limited “special sales event”. It’s a great time to stock up on stocking stuffers for your geeky friends and family, or to get something nice for yourself! So, some pre-planning is needed. That said, let’s take a look back in time and try to figure out what kinds of headphone deals we can expect on Cyber Monday 2022! Cyber Monday Apple Airpods deals Apple just recently announced the AirPods Pro 2nd gen. While they are cool, we don’t expect them to drop by more than maybe, probably, $20-$30 during the Black Friday / Cyber Monday period. But the good news is that shelves are stocked with 1st gen AirPods Pro. And those are still pretty good! Aside from them, we have AirPods 3 and AirPods Max to crave, and these often get discounts nowadays. Last year, the AirPords Pro 1 had a constant $40 discount across retailers, dropping to $180, but we expect them to drop by more this time around. The AirPods Max were down by $60 (to $490) in places like B&H Photo, and the AirPods 3 had $30 discounts (to $149) all around, but we expect them to drop an extra $10 or so during Cyber Monday 2022. Here are some current AirPods deals: Cyber Monday Samsung Galaxy Buds deals Samsung recently released new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and its previous Galaxy Buds 2 are also hot among Samsung fans. We are looking forward to discounts on those, which may vary between $20 and $40 off. There are also the bean-shaped Galaxy Buds Live that often get slashed by about $50, to $100-ish. Cyber Monday Bose headphone deals Bose is a huge name in the audio market, and obviously makes some of the best headphones to enjoy your tunes on. The Bose QuietComfort 45 often drops by $50 (down to $280) on shopping events, while the QuietComfort Earbuds shake off $80 (down to $200) from their price-tag. Cyber Monday Sony headphone deals Sony has a few excellent models that offer superb experience — the WF-1000XM4 and WH-1000XM4 are their premium line of in-ears and over-ears, respectively. The new LinkBuds WF-I900 are also amazing at both feeding good sound to your ears, while letting all the outside noise pass through as well. We saw the WH-1000XM4 dropped to $250 last year, which was a steal. We can’t wait to see the price drops on the LinkBuds — a good $50 off on those would make them a steal. [No Sony headphone deals currently] Cyber Monday Beats headphone deals The Beats brand has kind of lost its premium charm since Apple started pushing out its own AirPods models. But it’s still mostly alive and well, and still a lifestyle accessory for many. Last year, we saw the Beats Studi 3 dropping by $150 to $200, the Beats Solo Pro falling by $120 to $180, and the Studio Buds getting a slash by about $30, to $120. Many would say, that’s still too much for Beats headphones, harr harr. Cyber Monday Sennheiser headphone deals Sennheiser is a well-known, long-loved audio brand that has a firm place in the pro audio equipment market. Naturally, their skills translate well to making consumer headphones — probably with ease. Last year, we saw the excellent Sennheiser Momentum drop to $250 — a full $150 discount. And the Momentum 2 was down by $100 — to $200.  Do headphones go on sale on Cyber Monday? Yes, absolutely, and a lot of them do, actually. It’s a good time to look for a fresh pair of headphones, or to shop for a gift for someone who can’t live without their music! You will be able to find Cyber Monday discounts on headphones at Best Buy, Walmart, Newegg, B&H Photo, as well as the manufacturers’ own websites. Expensive headphones (from $250 and up) often drop by a considerable amount — we’ve seen discounts from -$50 to -$150, which is basically between 25% and 50% off. The usual suspects to come at a bargain are Bose, Sennheiser, Sony headphones, and Samsung’s excellent Galaxy Buds. Apple’s AirPods — all models — do get discounts during the Cyber Monday period, but rarely do we get an actual massive bargain. Cheaper models also get discounted, but they drop by $10 to $20, which isn’t something to really write home about when the MSRP of the set is $80. Still, if you are looking to maximize savings when shopping for multiple gifts — of course it matters. Sound like a lot? No worries, stick around here — we will be updating the article as deals go live! Is it worth buying headphones on Cyber Monday? It is definitely worth waiting for Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, if you are looking for new headphones. We often get big discounts on premium brands — good money that you can put towards another accessory, or back in your pocket. It’s a great gift idea for music-loving techies that may be considering upgrading their own headset currently. Just make sure your gift recipient isn’t planning to buy one for themselves during the huge sales events in late fall!

Crypto Energy Study Shrugged Off By Agencies Irking Lawmaker Bloomberg Law
Crypto Energy Study Shrugged Off By Agencies Irking Lawmaker Bloomberg Law
Crypto Energy Study Shrugged Off By Agencies, Irking Lawmaker – Bloomberg Law https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-energy-study-shrugged-off-by-agencies-irking-lawmaker-bloomberg-law/ Federal agencies are balking at—or declining to publicly explain their response to—cryptocurrency mining recommendations from a White House report that raised serious concerns about the rapidly growing industry’s energy consumption and climate footprint. The situation has irked one House Democrat who has pushed for a closer federal look at cryptocurrency—and who demanded that agencies answer his concerns soon. U.S. energy and environmental officials have announced no plans to pursue possible efficiency standards, electric grid reliability assessments, or energy use surveys outlined by the study, which was issued four weeks ago. The report found cryptocurrency mining accounts for 0.9% to 1.7% of U.S. electricity use and causes about 0.4% to 0.8% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. Costa Samaras, the Office of Science and Technology Policy’s principal assistant director for energy, told Bloomberg Law his office continues to interact with agencies to chart a path forward. “Each agency is reviewing the recommendations, and will announce commitments as part of their own process and timeline,” he said. But officials with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and North American Electric Reliability Commission said in interviews they don’t plan to take up a reliability assessment solely for cryptocurrency, arguing that they have safeguards in place to address grid shortfalls. The Energy Department declined to be interviewed about the White House report—it referred questions to the Justice Department, which has no jurisdiction over energy efficiency standards. Justice spokespeople didn’t return requests for comment. The Environmental Protection Agency also didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment, nor has it answered inquiries from congressional Democrats. ‘Find Out What’s Going On’ The silence from key agencies dampens the enthusiasm from Rep. (D-Calif.), who in April demanded the EPA study whether crypto facilities are complying with the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and other environmental statutes. Huffman joined others in hailing the report as an historic roadmap to better understand digital assets. “This problem is not going away—if anything, it is potentially getting much worse,” Huffman told Bloomberg Law. The agencies “should be looking at where these proof of work crypto mining operations are located,” he said. “Are they in impacted communities that have already been disproportionately impacted by various industries? Are they having adverse effects on electricity pricing, water pollution, or noise pollution for these communities?” Huffman said he wants to hear from agencies soon. “If I don’t hear from them in the next few weeks, I’m certainly going to pick up the phone and find out what’s going on,” he said. In May, Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm told Congress she “absolutely” supports further study of crypto mining. “The projection of the expansion of the capacity of the grid that most modelers use have not taken into full account that huge energy suck that cryptocurrency represents,” Granholm said. Searching for Data Huffman’s questions formed the core concerns laid out by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The push for better energy and emissions data is the biggest recommendation in the report, Samaras said during a Twitter Spaces event held by Bloomberg last week. “The public needs information and transparency so that we can enable some evidence-based policy,” Samaras said. Data could be gathered from voluntary disclosures from industry, Energy Department surveys of electric utilities, or state energy and environmental agencies, he said. Mines can consist of thousands of servers stacked in warehouses, deploying raw computing power to solve a series of complex math problems. “This is an industry that can grow really fast,” Samaras said. “We want to make sure the public is protected.” Part of the Plan Officials overseeing electric reliability said cryptocurrency mining doesn’t pose an imminent risk to the grid because they already balance supply with big electricity-guzzling facilities. Looking ahead several years, the growth of crypto—along with electric vehicles—may require keeping some power plants operational and building new plants in the right places, said John Moura, director of reliability assessment and performance analysis for the North American Electric Reliability Commission. The commission is a not-for-profit international regulator whose mission is to reduce risks to the grid’s reliability and security. “We’re not too concerned with this risk of demand just showing up very rapidly—we have a process for that,” Moura said. “What we are concerned about is, will we have enough generation capacity to serve that load?” Crypto mining may not need to be singled out from grid studies, said Allison Clements, a Democratic FERC commissioner, said during a recent editorial meeting with Bloomberg. “It’s unclear to me that an individual reliability assessment related to cryptocurrency mining, which happens in places, should be separated out from general reliability planning of any particular node, any service territory, any region, any interconnect,” Clements said. “It’s certainly on our radar. I don’t have anything to report, relative to anything coming up soon.” The Energy Information Administration, which publishes reams of data on energy trends, stands “ready to assist,” if the government begins to move on the issue, Chris Higginbotham, an EIA spokesman, said in an email. “It will be a long process for us to identify the proper organizations to survey, the right questions to ask, and the best way to present the data,” Higginbotham said. Short-Term Concerns Advocates are hopeful the report will spur action. “Typically, OSTP reports are the sorts of reports that collect dust,” said Scott Faber, senior vice president of government affairs for the Environmental Working Group. But this time could be different, he said, because “this issue is so much more critical to this White House than practically any other issue that OSTP might produce a report on.” Others see a window for the industry to act on its own. The report was a “call for transparency” issued to bitcoin, which uses a far more energy-intensive form of mining called proof-of-work, said Jesse Morris, CEO of Energy Web, a technology company that works with utilities and consumers to accelerate decarbonization. “It appeared as though the administration was hinting that if industry can provide some level of transparency around those things around bitcoin mining, that would be a way to hedge against some heavy handed regulation on proof-of-work mining,” Morris said.

Commercial papers are short-term unsecured debt issued by companies, where the value of the papers is dependant on the issuing company. Commerical papers are less stable than other debt instruments, like U.S. government treasuries. Tether had earlier said that it will bring its commercial paper holdings to zero by the end of the year on the back of growing concerns over the stability of its ecosystem and its stablecoin USDT. In May, the company held $20.1 billion of commercial papers, which it reduced to $8.5 billion by June 30. The USDT issuer had also appointed a new auditor BDO Italia to take over its regular attestation reports. Recently, the firm was ordered by a New York-court judge to produce financial records relating to the backing of USDT. Duke Vs Georgia Tech Football First Look: Odds, Top Story Line And Players To Watch – Raleigh News & Observer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/duke-vs-georgia-tech-football-first-look-odds-top-story-line-and-players-to-watch-raleigh-news-observer/ Duke’s Riley Leonard throws a pass during the first half of the team’s NCAA college football game against Virginia in Durham, N.C., Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022. (AP Photo/Ben McKeown) Ben McKeown AP Georgia Tech cleared out its athletic leadership last week and, in the process, rediscovered success on the football field. After head football coach Geoff Collins and athletic director Todd Stansbury were fired last Monday, the struggling Yellow Jackets beat then-No. 24 Pittsburgh, 26-21, Saturday night with interim coach Brent Key on the sidelines. From the depths of blowout losses to Clemson, Mississippi and UCF in September, Georgia Tech (2-3, 1-1 ACC) started October with a win. Now its Duke’s job to halt the Yellow Jackets’ success when the ACC Coastal Division teams play Saturday at 4 p.m. in Atlanta. The Blue Devils (4-1, 1-0 ACC) ended their 13-game ACC losing streak with a 38-17 pounding of Virginia at Wallace Wade Stadium Saturday night. After three consecutive losing seasons, the Blue Devils’ resurgence under first-year head coach Mike Elko has them approaching bowl eligibility for the first time since 2018. A win over Georgia Tech, a program that struggled under Collins, was always part of any path to six wins for Duke. With Collins no longer coaching the Yellow Jackets, and given how Georgia Tech played at Pitt, that task is tougher for the Blue Devils. Three Duke players to watch Riley Leonard, QB: The sophomore continues to play smart football for the Blue Devils. He’s fourth in the ACC in yards per pass attempt (9.4) and is No. 1 in the league in completion percentage (72%). He’s thrown seven touchdown passes with two interceptions. Jaylen Coleman, RB: Paced Duke’s solid rushing attack against Virginia with 97 yards on 19 carries. But he was slowed by a lower body injury late in the game. His availability for the Georgia Tech game is important. Shaka Heyward, LB: Turned in his best game of the season against Virginia, recording 13 tackles (including one tackle for loss) with a pass breakup. His Pro Football Focus score for run defense was an exceptional 91.2. Three Georgia Tech players to watch Jeff Sims, QB: Sophomore has turned in a mediocre season thus far, completing only 56.5% of his passes and averaging 168.2 passing yards per game. In upset of Pitt, Sims completed just 11 of 26 passes for 102 yards. Hassan Hall, RB: Senior leads the Yellow Jackets in rushing with 260 yards in five games. He’s averaging 5.91 yards per attempt and 52 yards per game. Ran for 157 yards against Pitt. Ayinde Eley, LB: Senior recorded 2.5 tackles for loss against Pittsburgh, giving him a team-best 8.5 in five games for the Yellow Jackets. He leads the ACC with 56 tackles this season after recording 14 against the Panthers. Vegas betting odds Duke opened as a 3.5-point favorite over Georgia Tech on Sunday. The over-under total is 55. Duke at Georgia Tech game and TV info Who: Duke (4-1, 1-0) at Georgia Tech (2-3, 1-1) Where: Bobby Dodd Stadium, Atlanta When: 4 p.m., Saturday TV: Regional Sports Network (Bally Sports South in N.C.) Stream: Bally Sports Plus Steve Wiseman has covered Duke athletics since 2010 for the Durham Herald-Sun and Raleigh News & Observer. He placed second in both beat writing and breaking news in the 2019 Associated Press Sports Editors national contest. Previously, Steve worked for The State (Columbia, SC), Herald-Journal (Spartanburg, S.C.), The Sun Herald (Biloxi, Miss.), Charlotte Observer and Hickory (NC) Daily Record covering beats including the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints, University of South Carolina athletics and the S.C. China Spends Holiday Lying Flat Amid Heavy Travel Restrictions Sixth Tone
China Spends Holiday ‘Lying Flat’ Amid Heavy Travel Restrictions – Sixth Tone https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/china-spends-holiday-lying-flat-amid-heavy-travel-restrictions-sixth-tone/ SHANGHAI — For this year’s National Day holiday, Zhao Zhiyan and her husband have decided to get away from it all. The couple plan to travel to a fancy hotel on the outskirts of Shanghai — around 20 kilometers from their apartment. Like millions of others, the pair are unable to travel beyond the city limits due to China’s strict pandemic controls. This trip will be the furthest they’ve ventured from home in 2022. Zhao feels lucky to be making even this short journey. She declines to reveal how much she spent to secure a spot in the five-star hotel; rooms in Shanghai’s upscale resorts are like gold dust this holiday. “We will stay in the hotel the whole time,” the 29-year-old told Sixth Tone. “We want to relax and have contact with as few people as possible.” Many in China plan to “lie flat” in local hotels this week, as the country has once again imposed heavy restrictions on long-distance travel for the seven-day public holiday. Authorities are being even more cautious than normal, with the historic 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China due to take place just days after the holiday ends. The Chinese mainland reported a total of 655 local infections on Sunday; nearly 80% of provincial-level governments discovered at least one case. Local authorities have issued repeated warnings against long-distance travel. Many employers and residential committees have imposed extra controls: Some have banned travel outright, while others have required people to provide a “valid reason” for travel in advance. People ride boats on West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, Oct. 2, 2022. VCG The restrictions have drastically curbed people’s travel plans. Chinese tech giant Meituan has described this week as a “local holiday,” with the majority of consumers planning to stay within their local area.  In a user survey, Meituan found that 70% of people do not plan to leave their city or province this week. Shopping, going to restaurants, and staying in local hotels and homestays are the most popular activities this holiday, the company said. Only 62,000 commercial flights are scheduled to take place during the National Day holiday, down over 22% compared with last year and nearly 40% compared with 2019. China’s trains are expected to handle just 68.5 million passenger trips between Sept. 28 and Oct. 8, whereas 110 million trips were made between Sept. 28 and Oct. 7 last year. Unable to take a vacation, many Chinese are instead scrambling to book luxurious “staycations” in nearby resorts. Online travel platform Trip.com reported Saturday that local bookings were up 98% on the first day of the holiday compared with the Mid-Autumn Festival last month. Nearly 60% of local hotel and homestay bookings were made by people born after 1990, the company added. Many hotels have hiked prices significantly for the holiday, the state-owned China News reported Saturday. In Beijing, one resort had increased its room rates from under 2,000 yuan ($280) per night to 3,888 yuan for Oct. 6; another from a few hundred yuan to an astonishing 5,000 yuan for Oct. 2, though the hotel denied this. Chen, a manager of a boutique homestay in east China’s Zhejiang province, told Sixth Tone Monday that they’d increased their room rates by around 300 yuan for the holiday, with prices ranging from 1,000 yuan to 2,000 yuan per night. “Our guests typically book a day or two in advance, and many drive from Shanghai,” Chen said. Plans Unveiled For Longyear Development | News, Sports, Jobs – Marquette Mining Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/plans-unveiled-for-longyear-development-news-sports-jobs-marquette-mining-journal/ Forestville is a new residential community that would be located initially on about 160 acres of Longyear-owned property in Marquette. The site plan highlights the five phases of development. (Graphic courtesy of Longyear) By Journal Staff MARQUETTE — Longyear has announced plans for Forestville, a residential community that it said will bring higher-quality new homes to outdoor-active people that access Marquette, and Michigan’s largest all-season trail network. The neighborhood, the company said in a news release, will feature “thoughtfully built homes” using regional forest products crafted into modern U.P. lifestyle floor plans. Forestville will unveil housing designs and neighborhood plans late this year, and begin taking reservations in spring 2023 for move-in in 2024. Longyear said Forestville offers features that are distinct from other Midwest housing developments: ≤ immediate access to the adjacent trail networks and waterways; ≤environment-friendly construction featuring locally sourced materials from regional forests; ≤ a variety of housing options for active young professionals, families, retirees and others ranging from townhomes to single-family homes; ≤ an active neighborhood concept that inspires healthy living, comfort and environmental stewardship; and ≤ hundreds of construction jobs throughout the project’s lifespan. “Forestville has been inspired by the active people of the U.P. who love spending time outdoors in our beautiful natural surroundings,” Longyear CEO Steve Hicks said in a news release. “Our community will offer high quality, thoughtfully designed homes in a neighborhood that gives people the escape they deserve.” In development since 2021, Longyear said Forestville is driven by the substantial demand for housing in the region, combined with the significant increase in active, outdoor-minded consumers. The project was undertaken as a way to address a growing U.P. trend — housing shortages. Two independent studies by InvestUP and Michigan Technological University found that the lack of available housing is both a significant challenge and the region’s greatest opportunity to retain and attract professionals and retirees to the area, according to Longyear. Hicks noted that green space and a low environmental impact have been, and remain, important considerations in Longyear’s approach to designing the project for future customers. “Longyear’s plan is to preserve 50 percent — a substantial portion of the property — as non-developable green space,” Hicks said. “We’re collaborating with our professional team and some key stakeholders to design our community to have the least possible amount of environmental impact.” Forestville will be located initially on roughly 160 acres of Longyear-owned property in Marquette Township. Longyear has owned property in the Forestville area for more than 125 years, and has provided the community with free recreational access to the land for decades. “The trails are a treasured asset for our whole community,” Hicks said. “We’re pleased that so many people have enjoyed the trails on Longyear land over the years. Forestville gives us an opportunity to work with the trail networks to strategically plan more recreation opportunities for future generations to enjoy.” During the estimated five years it will take to complete the Forestville project, Longyear will create more than 100 additional family sustaining jobs and provide a new substantial tax base within Marquette Township. To learn more about Forestville, visit www.liveforestville.com or contact Alysa Arwood at alysaarwood@jmlongyear.com. Longyear indicated that the Forestville neighborhood will embrace the surrounding Noquemanon Trail Network and provide outdoor-active residents with immediate access to adjacent public trails and waterways. The property is located mostly between Forestville Road and the Dead River Basin. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

Not quite, not yet. It’s always a fun time when the Rams and 49ers get together. The most recent meeting of the two NFC West rivals resulted in an excellent NFC Championship Game. Early in the 2022 season, though, neither team has exactly looked like those playoff teams from last year, but for different reasons. The Rams seem to be suffering from something of a Super Bowl hangover: Matthew Stafford has thrown four touchdowns to a gaudy five interceptions through just three games, but the Rams have put their Week 1 shellacking at the hands of the Bills behind them to win two straight games. The 49ers will have to continue to navigate their 2022 season without their starting quarterback Trey Lance, but the alternative is just fine in Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo, who was the subject of trade rumors all throughout the offseason, is again the starter for the 49ers. Kyle Shanahan and Co. should count themselves lucky to have kept Garoppolo this offseason. MORE: Watch Rams vs. 49ers with fuboTV (free trial) It’s a battle between NFC West rivals. India Enters Metaverse Fashion World For The First Time! – Analytics Insight https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/india-enters-metaverse-fashion-world-for-the-first-time-analytics-insight/ India Enters Metaverse Fashion World for The First Time! India enters the metaverse fashion with designer Shubhika Sharma being the pioneer India enters metaverse fashion! The idea behind digital fashion seems quite strange to many of us, but this growing phenomenon has now become a niche market that has gained much traction. Experts believe that this new metaverse concept is redefining the basic idea behind fashion and shopping! Recent reports say, clothing basically exists in the virtual world to make the fashion domain far more sustainable than what it is today. There is also data that claims that replacing physical clothing with digital ones will enhance the company’s design and development cycles, along with reducing the brand’s carbon footprint by over 40%. Due to several of these reasons, designers from all over the world have been entering the metaverse, showcasing their designs and introducing us to what fashion can actually look like in the emerging virtual world. Recently, Indian fashion designer Shubhika Sharma, from Papa Don’t Preach becomes the first label in the country to display fashion creations in the metaverse with the help of garments and accessories. This futuristic move by the brand is basically a footprint in Indian fashion history to become the first brands to enter the metaverse domain. Besides Shubhika, other Indian fashion giants like Manish Malhotra, Anamika Khanna, and Raghavendra Rathore have dropped their own NFT tokens, digital items in the form of an image, video, or in-game solution that can be traded or turned into a virtual outfit. They claim NFTs have become a major part of our virtual experience developing and integrating this evolving domain into the luxurious industry of fashion might be just the right step. However, the fashion industry is still quite reluctant to let go of the traditional norms of fashion. Some believe creativity can mostly be obtained through humans and a machine-generated model can never be considered an art. To advance into this domain, a strategy must include different ways to engage with the younger and emerging nature of clients. TikTok Said To Be Launching Live Shopping In The US TechCrunch
TikTok Said To Be Launching Live Shopping In The US – TechCrunch https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tiktok-said-to-be-launching-live-shopping-in-the-us-techcrunch/ TikTok is hunting for partners to launch its live shopping offering in the US as it is looking to outsource operations for these features. According to a report from Financial Times, the short video app has been talking with California-based TalkShopLive to provide infrastructure for live shopping features on TikTok. This tech will allow creators and brands to sell goods through videos on the platform. TalkShopLive takes a 10% commission from sellers for providing its services, and TikTok is likely to cover that cost for the initial phase of the project. The report noted that TikTok and TalkShopLive — which raised $6 million in a seed extension round last year — haven’t finalized any terms. So there is little information about when the shopping feature will go live. TikTok began offering ecommerce features last year by partnering with Shopify to let business accounts integrate their catalogs to a dedicated tab on their profiles. Plus, the company gave brands tools to create, run, and monitor ad campaigns on the platform. In June, TikTok also started testing a dedicated Shop feed to highlight products sold by merchants on the app. The company has been testing its live shopping product in the UK since last year — its first market outside Asia for testing this feature. However, a Financial Times report in July suggested that the project failed to meet the company’s expectations and it was reconsidering live shopping expansion in other countries such as the US and Germany. TikTok didn’t comment on the specifics of the kind of partnerships the company is looking for to expand its live commerce offerings. “When it comes to market expansion for TikTok Shop we are always guided by demand and are constantly exploring new and different options for how we can best serve our Community, Creators and Merchants in markets around the world. These efforts include exploring partnerships that further support a seamless e-commerce experience for merchants, which is an important part of our ecosystem,” TikTok said in a statement to TechCrunch. Live shopping hasn’t taken off in North America as expected. Facebook first started testing it in 2018, but last month it announced that the company is shutting down this feature to focus on Reels. Amazon also experimented with QVC-styled live streams from influencers prior to its Amazon Prime Day sales in July but didn’t provide any numbers about how much revenue it was able to generate from these live videos.

Leveraging Technology To Retain Staff Amid The Pandemic – Healthcare IT News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/leveraging-technology-to-retain-staff-amid-the-pandemic-healthcare-it-news/ By 2030, the world will be short of 15 billion healthcare workers, according to the World Health Organization.   “We really need urgent action to reverse this,” said Bruce Steinberg, HIMSS Head of International and Managing Director, who moderated the closing keynote session “Tomorrow Came Yesterday: What’s Next in the Workforce? A Glimpse into the Future of Healthcare” at HIMSS22 APAC. “More importantly, we need more efforts to train, recruit, and retain the next generation of healthcare workers.” During this session, Professor Oscar Lee, Vice Superintendent and orthopaedic surgeon at China Medical University Hospital (CMUH), and Gareth Sherlock, CIO of Cleveland Clinic London, also shared insights into retaining healthcare staff amid growing infectious disease pandemics. For Sherlock, the organisation’s culture plays a crucial role in keeping talent. Early on, Cleveland Clinic considered everyone in their organisation, both clinical and non-clinical staff, as caregivers. “Because in some way, you are responsible directly or indirectly for the care of all the patients that we look after,” he said.  On Prof Lee’s end, it is important to take into consideration the perspective of healthcare workers’ families.  According to him, organisations must employ technologies that will ensure work safety under life-threatening pandemics. “Not only [should it be] cut out for medical personnel, but also for the patients as well. The technology [must be] tailored to help medical personnel to come back.” In Cleveland Clinic’s case, there are two considerations for IT projects: one, it must make the lives of clinicians and other caregivers easier and more efficient, and two, it must deliver a better patient experience. “If it’s not doing one of those two, what are you doing it for?” Sherlock said. Another strategy for staff retention is offering continuing education. Prof Lee shared that the CMUH has partnered with Taiwan AI School to provide evening courses to equip university faculty and hospital staff with fundamental concepts and knowledge of AI. Attracting global talent Sherlock claims that one thing that attracts medical talent to work for Cleveland Clinic is its global healthcare model. He noted how applicants find it frustrating that many hospitals, especially those within a health system, work very independently and that their systems and processes are often disparate from other hospitals within the same system.  “People are attracted to Cleveland Clinic London Hospital [because] we use the same systems and the same processes as [those] at the main campus or in Abu Dhabi. And some of the technologies we are delivering are very, very cutting edge,” Sherlock explained. Meanwhile, Prof Lee said what sets them apart from other university hospitals in the region is that their institution is a “hub for innovation.” At CMUH, he explained, medical residents are not only enabled to perform their professional duties but are also provided with an opportunity to work on health technology projects. Getting everyone on board in digital transformation In the many digital transformation projects in the UK, Middle East, and Australia that Sherlock has been involved in, all were clinically-led. “If they’re not clinically-led, in my experience, they’re not gonna be successful,” he claimed.  For example, their clinicians were the ones who developed the workflows of the stroke programme in their hospital in Abu Dhabi, making the institution the stroke centre in the city. While the IT team built the very system beneath the programme, it was the clinical team who launched it and trained everyone on it, Sherlock said. But communication between IT and care teams may come as a hindrance to efforts in digital health transformation.  To resolve this, Prof Lee has been convincing the university leadership to teach and orient medical students with technology.  “They don’t have to be experts in Python; the bottom line is that they should be able to understand what people from IT can do for them and help them,” he said. Meanwhile, Sherlock referred to the Informatics department as a key to bridging the IT and clinical teams in digital transformation efforts.  He also advised that in any IT project, all staff from all levels of the organisation must be engaged from the beginning through its completion. “They need to be part of the process so at the very end, [they are the] biggest advocates, they’re the ones [who are] selling the programme.”

St. Francis Opens Home Slate With Emphatic Win Over Central Connecticut State – LNP | LancasterOnline https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/st-francis-opens-home-slate-with-emphatic-win-over-central-connecticut-state-lnp-lancasteronline/ Oct. 2—LORETTO — St. Francis University football fans finally got to see what all the buzz was about concerning Makai Jackson, and, on one play at the beginning of the second quarter, the 6-foot, 190-pound freshman wide receiver introduced himself. The routine pass over the middle that Jackson turned into a 29-yard touchdown highlighted St. Francis’ 19-point flurry to begin the game as the Red Flash — playing the first of three home games this season — moved above .500 with a 39-13 Northeast Conference win against visiting Central Connecticut State at a rainy DeGol Field on Saturday afternoon. “This is a good steppingstone of where we’re at and what we have yet to go up against,” Red Flash redshirt sophomore receiver Dawson Snyder said after making his home debut as a starter before about 30 friends and family from Somerset County. St. Francis snapped a four-game losing skid against the Blue Devils. The Red Flash are on their first three-game winning streak since 2016. “We needed this. We needed this,” St. Francis coach Chris Villarrial said. “I think it’s a testament to the coaching staff and the leadership. Last year, we got humbled and the guys didn’t like it, and they’re fighting. The leadership’s been great.” The Red Flash (3-2, 2-0 NEC) were leading 5-0 in the opening minute of the second quarter when Cole Doyle found Jackson on a seemingly innocent crossing pattern on second-and-12. Jackson, however, with malicious intent, broke a tackle at the sticks to convert the first down and kept going. Jackson then skated past the rest of the Central Connecticut State secondary and knifed into the end zone for his fifth touchdown of the year. “See, I thought was going to get leveled,” Jackson said. “I thought someone was going to drop me, but I stayed up.” Other than the electrifying touchdown, it was a modest day for the true freshman from Harry S. Truman High School just outside Philadelphia: four receptions and a 6-yard run. For the season, Jackson has 28 receptions and has won three NEC rookie of the week awards. The Red Flash were his only scholarship offer, so the young man whose motto is “stick to the plan” didn’t have any big expectations for this fall. “I didn’t expect to see much of the field, maybe get redshirted and develop more. I wasn’t expecting this much. Just keep your head down, grinding and keep the faith,” Jackson said. Another true freshman Red Flash wideout, Elijah Sarratt also came up big, catching four passes for 50 yards, including a 6-yard touchdown from Doyle in the fourth quarter. He also returned free kick 33 yards. Berlin’s Snyder, who went to Shanksville-Stonycreek and played scholastic football at Shade, had a memorable first home start, setting up the Alex Schmoke 34-yard field goal that opened the scoring 4:03 into the contest after coming back and leaping for a 28-yard catch from Justin Sliwoski. “It felt good. I wish the weather was a little bit nicer but it was a great atmosphere. We stuck to the game plan and did everything (we needed),” Snyder said. The St. Francis defense turned in its second strong performance in three weeks by holding Central Connecticut State (0-5, 0-2 NEC) to one offensive touchdown. The Red Flash came up with three takeaways, limiting the Blue Devils to 266 yards. “We’re getting better every week,” said end Donnell Brown, who made two tackles for loss and also registered two quarterback hurries. “It’s a new era. We have to stick to our principles. We can’t get too high. I know winning feels good, but losing doesn’t feel good. We’ve got to keep that pedal pushing.” The most impressive drive of the first half came in the middle of the second quarter and put the Red Flash up 19-0, going 74 yards on eight plays after holding Central Connecticut State on downs. It started when Damon Horton found a seam on a quick swing pass from Sliwoski and took it 47 yards to the Central Connecticut State 27. Runs by Jordan Jackson, Sarratt and Horton moved it to the 1. Then Lovell Armstead went untouched around right end with 5:15 left in the second quarter. After Schmoke’s field goal, the team’s exchanged punts before the Red Flash were on the board again when the snap from the 27 flew over Central Connecticut State punter Aidan Clark’s head and threw the end zone for a safety that made it 5-0. Central Connecticut State had a chance to get back into the game at the end of the first half after Luquay Washington returned an interception of Doyle 47 yards for a touchdown and the Blue Devils held St. Francis three-and-out. Travell Cook, though, mitigated the damage with a spectacular diving interception. (c)2022 The Tribune-Democrat (Johnstown, Pa.) Classic ’89 370LE Airstream Motorhome Is Now A Rolling Private Cinema That Sleeps 7 – Autoevolution https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/classic-89-370le-airstream-motorhome-is-now-a-rolling-private-cinema-that-sleeps-7-autoevolution/ Loretta is also a good example of upcycling for an extended shelf-life. It started out as a 1989 370LE Airstream Motorhome but is now the perfect family vacation home that can sleep up to seven people: the six members of the family and one guest. It also provides basic creature comforts and, to boot, it doubles as a private cinema. A home on wheels and a rolling movie theater, all wrapped up in a beautiful, shiny package, what more could you want? Loretta is a project by Colorado-based Timeless Travel Trailers, which boasts of being the “largest and most experienced custom builder in North America,” with an impressive portfolio of private and corporate customers. Done on commission for a family of six from New York City seeking “a getaway that still resembles their home in the city,” Loretta has a “modern and minimal aesthetic, [while] the interior is simple and fresh.” Words can only do this much in terms of conveying the message, so the photos in the gallery will offer whatever proof is still needed that this is a beautiful project in every way. The interior is clean and functional, modular yet still very elegant and inviting. The exterior is top-notch, with the shiny aluminum skin extending within the walls, which forms a beautiful contrast with the natural wood-engineered white oak flooring. The company behind the conversion says that they removed all the original aluminum skins and added the new type of skin that Airstream uses in its current models. Inside, there’s a lounge that doubles as a dining area and sleeping area, depending on the time of day. Couches offer comfortable seating during mealtimes, convert into beds, or into lounges when the projector screen comes down for movie nights. There’s a double couch that becomes a king-size bed and another couch reserved for sleeping one guest. At the rear, in a separate room, Loretta has two more couches that join to become a bed and two elevated bunks for kids. In total, there’s sleeping for seven people, and the size of the motorhome allows for some sense of privacy despite the high number of people inside. Speaking of which, Loretta is 37 feet long (11.2 meters). The three-axle motorhome also has space for a kitchenette, which comes with a sink, pantry, storage, microwave, induction cooktop, and a fridge with a freezer compartment. The entire family can sit down for dinner at the fold-down tables, and there’s a certain sense of refinement to the space thanks to the marble-like waterfall countertops. Since Loretta was designed to travel, no real marble was used, as it would have added too much weight; a real marble stone veneer on a plywood substrate was used instead. One of the counters integrates a bar with a wine chiller and a secret liquor compartment that comes up from the countertop. Fancy – and most welcome after a long work week. The bathroom is small but practical, with a toilet, a shower with a stainless steel pan, and a duckboard. The lounge area can become a private cinema thanks to an ultra-short-throw LG projector and projector screen, coupled with a Sonos stereo system with a hidden soundbar. A 32-inch television is also available in the kitchen, on a swivel arm for more convenience. Further upgrades include new wiring and plumbing, a new generator, water heater and pump, furnace, AC and two fans, new fresh, gray, and black water tanks, and a security system with surveillance cameras for peace of mind when the family leaves this beauty unattended. According to Timeless Travel Trailers, Loretta remains one of their most popular projects. Completed and delivered to the owners in 2018, it’s been on several cross-country trips since and is holding up remarkably well.
