The Fiji Times » New Investment – Cafe Promotes Healthy Living – Fiji Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-fiji-times-new-investment-cafe-promotes-healthy-living-fiji-times/ For Sandeep Narayn Singh, his first café ‘Tuttie Fruity’ is all about giving back to his own country. Mr Singh travelled all the way from Singapore to start a café in Fiji which promoted healthy living. Located at MHCC ground floor, the café was inaugurated on Saturday. The 44-year-old said one of the specialties of the café was that they used fresh fruits to make smoothies. “Tuttie Fruity is more popular on selling smoothies so we do fresh fruit smoothies like no artificial so that’s the specialty of it,” he said. “Apart from that, we are actually launching a subway where you can choose the vegetables you want, the meat you want. “And again, we will be promoting the Fijian grown products whether its dalo, we gonna have dalo smoothie, we’ll be turning it into value-added product for Fiji.” He said he would be opening his second branch at Vodafone Triangle in Suva in the coming week and in his hometown — Lautoka in future. He said they had spent a total of $300,000 for the both branches so far. Speaking at the opening, Minister for Commerce, Trade, Tourism and Transport Faiyaz Koya said the café was a “wonderful business opportunity”. “And I think it’s great because it’s a healthy lifestyle, its actually creating employment as you all know Government is been engaging with all our MSMEs and trying to grow the sector with respect to post-COVID,” he said. “It’s a positive sign that people are actually investing back into the country post-COVID.”

The Metaverse Legal Challenges And Opportunities For IP Rights Holders Lexology
The Metaverse Legal Challenges And Opportunities For IP Rights Holders Lexology
The Metaverse – Legal Challenges And Opportunities For IP Rights Holders – Lexology https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-metaverse-legal-challenges-and-opportunities-for-ip-rights-holders-lexology/ As companies prepare for a future with and in the Metaverse, there’s an increasing focus on the legal challenges especially for trade mark, copyright or patent owners. Not having an understanding of intellectual property rights in a virtual environment can increase risk for IP rights holders as well as sellers or buyers. So what can (or should) IP rights holders do? This article gives an insight into the challenges relating to trade marks, copyrights and patents in the Metaverse. The Metaverse is gradually becoming a new reality. For some, it is primarily a collection of online virtual worlds. Others, however, focus on the role that specific technologies such as the blockchain, virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) might play in accessing these worlds. The Metaverse can best be described as the three-dimensional successor to the internet as we know it today. Based on current predictions, the Metaverse is expected to consist of a multitude of interconnected and synchronous virtual platforms that are operated continuously and can be experienced by consumers through their avatars. The boundaries between the digital and the physical space will likely be blurred as virtual content will be displayed in real-life and consumers will be able to access the Metaverse easily through different devices. Some believe that we are already experiencing one or several Metaverses today. However, it seems that a transition to the Metaverse as described above is still some years in the future and the concept of the Metaverse is still evolving. This makes it difficult to determine what changes and challenges will arise, especially in terms of legal issues, but there are signs of what lies ahead. There is no doubt that brands will need to ensure their trade marks are adequately protected in both the virtual and real world. The past year has seen a surge in the number of trade mark applications for virtual goods and services. According to a report from May 2022, the increase in popularity of the Metaverse and NFTs raised Class 9 of the Nice Classification (including computer hardware and software) to second place by the end of 2021. There has, however, been significant disagreement in legal circles about the possible classification of virtual goods and services intended to be used in the Metaverse. On 23 June 2022, the EUIPO released guidance indicating that such virtual goods should be considered as Class 9 (computers and scientific devices). The Office also said that NFTs (non-fungible tokens) are to be “treated as unique digital certificates registered in a blockchain, which authenticate digital items but are distinct from those digital items”. As such they should be incorporated into Class 9; however, they must also specify the “type of digital item authenticated by the NFT”. Many brand owners with trade marks for their ‘real life’ products are now considering whether additional protection for virtual goods is necessary. When it comes to trade marks, there are several areas where conflicts can arise in the virtual space. Without specific protection of ‘virtual goods’, one of the biggest questions in this context will be whether and, if so, under what circumstances there is a likelihood of confusion between a trade mark protected for physical goods and a sign used/applied for the virtual versions of those goods (or of comparable virtual goods). In other words, the offices and courts will have to decide whether virtual and physical goods share a degree of similarity and, in addition, whether consumers will expect that both these types of items are likely to have the same commercial origin where they are branded with the same (or similar) marks. From a copyright law perspective, NFTs are at the centre of current discussions. Harnessing the advantages of blockchain technology, NFTs are unique digital assets that can be traded easily and securely (e.g. works of art or other collectibles). NFTs serving both as title of ownership and certificate of authenticity, have created a huge market for digital content (which, as such, can easily be copied). NFTs include a variety of metadata making them unique and not interchangeable. If the digital asset underlying the NFT is, for example, a digital artwork, such metadata could include: the name of the digital artist, the title of the work, the number of copies, and its size. Furthermore, NFTs are governed by (smart) contracts defining how the buyer of the digital asset may use them, ie the specific copy of the digital asset that is represented by the NFT. These licence agreements, as always, have to be carefully drafted to make sure both parties – seller and buyer – know which rights they have sold or acquired. The seller might want to grant a non-exclusive licence and/or restrict the right of use to certain use-cases, while the buyer is often interested in getting an exclusive license in the digital artwork represented by the NFT. Consequently, NFTs will be fundamental in the Metaverse where users buy and sell digital assets, including digital content (e.g. artwork) which they want to enjoy and present in their virtual home and, potentially, resell to another user, ideally while making a profit. Meta, Apple and Microsoft are among the big tech businesses which have announced that they will invest immense sums in building a Metaverse. Filing patents seems to be an essential part of cashing in on this virtual world. According to the Financial Times, US companies have already filed several hundred patent applications for multiple technologies that employ user biometric data for powering what they see and ensuring their digital avatars are animated realistically in the Metaverse. Looking a bit deeper into the published patent filings, they range from eye and face tracking technology to body pose tracking and avatar personalisation engines that even use a so-called skin replicator. They point to a virtual world future, in which a natural person in the real world can be effectively cloned in the virtual world, including every skin pore and distinctive body, eye and face movement a person has. Recently granted patents include “modifying an interface displaying video content received from users participating in a video exchange session based on input from a participating user”, “augmented reality collaboration system with physical device”, “augmented reality collaboration system” and the list goes on and on. While not all patents are used yet, the goal seems evident – building a networked and commercialised Metaverse. When it comes to the question of which potential patents will be applied for and when they will be granted, a rough distinction can be made between software and hardware-related patents. Depending on whether the patent concerns a computer-implemented method or a hardware component, different prerequisites are required. When it comes to hardware patents for the Metaverse, they often relate to screens or gear for entering the Metaverse such as VR glasses, sensors, processors or storage mediums. While there are already many existing patents for VR and AR hardware, many more have already been filed. The major criteria for the patent to be granted will still be the need for novelty and inventiveness, but even subtle technological changes can lead to the invention being patentable. In contrast, the approval for software-related patents is more complex. As most software for the Metaverse will be used for creating the virtual world, inventions for simulation programmes are difficult to obtain for the EPO countries. However, these restrictions do not apply globally. Inventions for software are much easier to obtain in the U.S., for example, where applications for pure software patents for the Metaverse have already been filed. This possible lack of protection for “simulation inventions” could lead to issues regarding licence requirements or infringement issues in e.g. EPO countries further down the road, given the Metaverse is accessible globally. With everything happening so quickly in the Metaverse, it is hard to predict the challenges and opportunities for businesses. Those wanting to enter the Metaverse, need to act promptly if they want to save their spot in the virtual world, whether this is by acquiring licences or filing patents themselves. The Metaverse is going to be a profitable place for companies willing to understand it. It has potential to reshape businesses – particularly marketing and sales – as we know it. It will be exciting to see how the virtual world of the Metaverse and the analogous world will fit together.

Target Promising review: “I never write reviews, but this one really deserves it. I bought one and went right back and ordered it in four other colors!! It is sooo soft, amazing quality, and a perfect fit. Here’s how I used it: I wore down the stick just a little to where the texture from the salt is visible, scrubbed around on my face so there was plenty of product, then I used my fingers to gently massage all the gunk away. Rinse, pat dry, and enjoy the softness. Highly recommended for people with sensitive skin like myself.” —LuckLocust Get it from Amazon for $12.50.  8. A pair of batwings that’ll look so ~bloody~ adorable on your shoes. Yep, that’s right — these are batwings for your shoes and skates! Thank you so much for this experience! 3" —CAIN Get it from Wolf Workshop on Etsy for $32.74 (wings are available in five colors and hardware is available in three colors). 9. A cruelty-free lengthening mascara if you’re ready to make your dream of voluminous, curly lashes come true. It’s lightweight, won’t transfer, doesn’t smudge, and lasts all day — what more could you ask for? Promising review: “This stuff is fantastic! My eyelashes are dark and aren’t particularly long. A few coats of this, and it really looks like I have extensions. The day I got it, I had to get right back on Amazon and order another tube for my mother. She tried it, and it made her VERY sparse, short lashes look like doll lashes. Doesn’t seem to smudge, yet removal is easy at the end of the day! Definitely feel good about this $5 impulse purchase!” —Jane Eyre Get it from Amazon for $4.99. 10. A pair of exfoliating mitts for making you go, “Oh, gross!” the next time you shower. They’re made of a viscose fiber that buffs away beads of dead skin (you’ll literally be able to see them) to reveal buttery, baby soft skin underneath — and probably make you feel like a lizard shedding its skin. Promising review: “I use a loofah everyday, so I just bought this to use once a week, not thinking it would do much if anything. Man, was I wrong!!! I read reviews, viewed pictures, and watched the videos. I assumed they all used tanning products or spray tans, because the skin in the tub was brown/black. OMG, mine was too!!! I haven’t tanned in 15 or so years. It was gross. On the bright side, my skin really does feel great. Just get it, seriously…” —Kim McMahon Get them from Amazon for $9.99 (also available individually). 11. A Sunday Riley face sunscreen with SPF 30 because I bet your current sunscreen doesn’t protect against blue light. Well, this guy does! And it dries without leaving a white cast or feeling heavy on the skin. Sephora I’d written off all Western sunscreens as absolute TRASH in favor of Asian sunscreens, but this sunscreen really surprised me. What impressed me the most and what is probably my favorite thing about this product (apart from the sun protection) is that there was absolutely no white cast. It does take a little bit for it to fully soak into the skin, but I actually enjoyed the dewy glow it gave my skin because I don’t usually wear makeup/foundation. The only fault I can find is that the sunscreen is quite runny, so I have to make sure to hold the container upside down when I open it so the sunscreen doesn’t drip everywhere. Promising review: “The best sunscreen for melanated people. For those saying it leaves a blue cast, the key is rub the sunscreen in your hands and create heat versus simply applying straight to your face. So many benefits in one sunscreen, why wouldn’t you buy it??” —thee1bbn Get it from Amazon and Sephora for $35. 12. The Clean Ball, a genius German invention so you can get rid of purse sand — y’know, the fine layer of dirt, dust, crumbs, grit, and who knows what else that you scrape your hand against whenever you’re rooting around your bag and you brush the bottom of your tote. Inside the honeycomb pink ball is a smaller sticky ball that picks up debris and washes clean so you can reuse it. Amazon Promising review: “This little ball is genius! It rolls around in my purse, which I live out of. It picks up a lot lint, debris, or even crumbs. It’s easy to find with the bright pink. Just remove and wash and it’s ready to go again. The price was great and something I can use for years. If you live out of your purse this a must have!!” —dj3biggs Get it from Amazon for $12.99 (available in three co...

Crypto Investors Hunker Down For storms Ahead TechCentral
Crypto Investors Hunker Down For ‘storms Ahead’ – TechCentral https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-investors-hunker-down-for-storms-ahead-techcentral/ Crypto investors found something to cheer about amid the recent downturn in digital tokens: the asset class held up better than just about everything else in the third quarter. Yet the hunt for a bottom continues as long-term holders cling on with expectations that there’s more pain to come — and retail investors stay on the sidelines. Even with the narrative going around that crypto hung tough in the July to September stretch, the mood has remained sour. While around 83 500 new digital wallets are coming online daily, that’s a low for the 2020-2022 cycle, according to data compiled by strategists at Glassnode. Meanwhile, wealth held by “mature coins” is at an all-time high, the researcher said, as long-time investors have refused to spend them amid the market turmoil. The group of investors who “hodl” through thick and thin — meaning those who remain loyal even during tough times — has remained “steadfast”, according to Glassnode, which said that they might be hunkering down “for the storms ahead”. Such is the problem for bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies now — the cohort of retail-type investors who had fuelled much of last year’s huge surge in prices have been missing in action. Some market watchers say that with hodl-investors waiting things out, the overhanging question remains whether — or when — individual investors will make a return. “The overall price has got to do better, and once it does the retail investor will become excited again. We definitely don’t have that right now because we’re just stuck in a range,” said Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak & Co. “There’s nothing that turns off an individual investor more than something getting stuck in a sideways range.” At issue is bitcoin needing to find a bottom amid a selloff that’s brought it down 60% this year. Many analysts say that should US stocks form a floor, then the digital token could too, though there’s little consensus on when that might happen. Others argue that once the dollar starts to weaken, then bitcoin might be able to break upwards also. Waned Whatever the case, interest in crypto has waned in recent months. Google trends show the general populace has been much less interested in the tokens. And bitcoin’s on-chain activity has been depressed the whole year, according to a note by Jaran Mellerud at researcher Arcane. “If it is a risk asset, as many including myself have suggested, picking a bottom in BTC is tantamount to picking a bottom in stocks,” Marc Chandler, chief market strategist at Bannockburn Global Forex, said, adding that “the crash has tempered the enthusiasm among” people he speaks to. With investors sitting things out until bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can start to rebound, ETF flows have remained muted, too. The money flowing out of crypto-related funds in the third quarter has slowed and some analysts argue the bulk of investors fleeing happened in the second quarter. Now they’re just waiting things out. TC|Daily | ‘The biggest event ever in crypto’: Revix CEO on the ‘Merge’ There are plenty who say that price recoveries could still be a ways off. That’s the view of Ashley Oerth, senior investment strategy analyst at Invesco, who says that cryptocurrencies tend to be valued not by their own characteristics but by the prevailing macro environment. TC|Daily | Simon Dingle on the ZARP rand stablecoin, the Merge and more “‘Next summer’ (northern hemisphere) for crypto is probably when we see peak hawkishness from central banks and a start to easing policy,” Oerth said. “To the extent that you’re a believer in crypto’s long-term potential, now may be a buying opportunity — if you can stomach the volatility.”  — Vildana Hajric, (c) 2022 Bloomberg LP Get the latest and best South African tech news

These 2 ASX Tech Stocks Are Taking A Hit Ahead Of RBA’s Rate Meeting – TipRanks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/these-2-asx-tech-stocks-are-taking-a-hit-ahead-of-rbas-rate-meeting-tipranks/ ASX tech stocks have been taking a hit ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) meeting tomorrow, where it’s set to raise its benchmark interest rate for a sixth consecutive time. The technology sector is among those that tend to be sensitive to interest rate changes. The S&P/ASX 200 Information Technology (XIJ) index fell more than 1.30% today, extending its year-to-date losses to over 36%. The notable decliners in the index were Xero Limited (ASX:XRO) and Nextdc Limited (ASX:NXT). Why are RBA rate hikes adverse to technology companies? The RBA is predicted to raise its interest rate by as much as 0.50% as it attempts to tame inflation that has hit record levels. Rising rates mean more expensive loans for borrowers. When borrowing becomes more expensive, technology companies can face difficulties when trying to raise additional capital, which is needed to meet growth expectations. Moreover, more expensive loans can diminish sales for technology companies if their customers cannot access the funding they require for IT projects. Aside from worries about increasing rates making borrowing more expensive, recession concerns have also caused some investors to sour on tech stocks. Xero shares sink but analysts keep faith in the stock Xero provides online solutions to small businesses. Its shares fell as much as 4% today to hit a new 52-week low of AU$70.71. They settled at AU$71.60, down 2.6% for the day. The decline extended the stock’s year-to-date losses to over 50%. According to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, Xero stock is a Strong Buy. The average Xero share price target of AU$100.55 implies over 40% upside potential. TipRanks insights further show that financial blogger opinions are 80% Bullish on Xero stock, compared to a sector average of 64%. Nextdc shares plunge but analysts remain strongly bullish on the stock Nextdc develops and operates data centres. Its share dropped as much as 3% today, hitting a new 52-week low of AU$8.57. The stock settled at AU$8.65, down 1.7% for the day. Nextdc shares have declined more than 30% since the beginning of 2022. According to TipRanks’ analyst rating consensus, Nextdc stock is a Strong Buy. The average Nextdc share price forecast of AU$12.79 implies about 48% upside potential. TipRanks insights also show that financial blogger opinions are 92% Bullish on Nextdc stock, compared to a sector average of 65%. Concluding remarks While rising interest rates and recession concerns have kept many investors on edge, those investing for the longer term may choose to look past these headwinds. The impacts of rate hikes and even recessions often smooth out over long term investment strategies. Disclosure

Mannarino Doesnt Check Draws; His Next Surprise? A Wawrinka Showdown ATP Tour
Mannarino Doesn’t Check Draws; His Next Surprise? A Wawrinka Showdown – ATP Tour https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/mannarino-doesnt-check-draws-his-next-surprise-a-wawrinka-showdown-atp-tour/ Adrian Mannarino will sleep well Sunday night on the eve of the Astana Open. He’s one of those tennis players who chooses not to dwell on what lies directly ahead. “I don’t want to talk about the draw or who I’m facing or whatever because I’m not looking,” the 34-year-old said at the beginning of a Sunday interview. “The quality of the tournament? I don’t know anything.” Given the formidable ATP 500 field gathered in Kazakhstan, it’s probably just as well Mannarino doesn’t know that he’ll be facing three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the tournament’s very first match (12 noon, local time) on centre court at the National Tennis Centre. Yes, at the moment, you actually know more than he does. Mannarino is coming off a first-round loss in Tel Aviv, where he was the seventh seed, to fellow Frenchman Constant Lestienne. The good news? He beat Wawrinka in the only match they ever played in the second round of the 2015 Miami Open presented by Itau – prevailing in a pair of taut tie-breaks. This is one of six first-round singles matches, featuring three seeded players, that will unfold Monday. Following the opening match, seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz faces Francisco Cerundolo. The night session (6 p.m. local) kicks off with eighth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime versus Roberto Bautista Agut – perhaps the finest quality matchup in the first round. The nightcap is fifth seed Andrey Rublev against qualifier Laslo Djere. The only doubles match: Ivan Dodig and Austin Krajicek against the Kazakhstani wild-card team of Grigoriy Lomakin and Denis Yevseyev. The first match of the day on Court 1 has Botic Van de Zandschulp opposite Kazakhstan wild card Beibit Zhukayev. Van de Zandschulp has a fascinating backstory. He’s played 58 matches so far this year at the tour-level – previously, he had only played 27. The 26-year-old from the Netherlands is ranked No. 35, but a year ago he had to qualify for all four Grand Slam events. He went a searing 11-1 in those qualifying matches, reaching the main draw at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open. As it turned out, he got into the Wimbledon field as a lucky loser. At last year’s US Open, the Dutchman became only the third male qualifier to reach the quarter-finals. There, he faced Daniil Medvedev – and was the only player to take a set from the eventual champion. He finished the season as the Netherlands’ No. 1 and has been adapting to this, his first full season on the ATP Tour. “Yeah, I think I did quite all right,” Van de Zandschulp said in an interview. “It was pretty tough, actually, playing first time Cincinnati and Montreal, four matches in total. I was not ashamed to lose to [Cam] Norrie or [Daniil] Medvedev. “Winston-Salem [semi-finals] was good. It’s still figuring out what the best schedule is for me. There’s ups and downs, and hopefully I can manage things to the end of the year.” The Dutchman will play Astana and is scheduled for Antwerp, Basel and Paris. And then – after “a small vacation” – there is some unfinished business in Australia, where the Netherlands will play in the November Davis Cup quarter-finals. Van de Zandschulp was a big part of the victory in Glasgow, Scotland, where he and his team defeated Kazakhstan, Great Britain and the United States to win Group D. This season, he said, has involved a steep learning curve. With access to so many tournaments, it’s been difficult to keep his schedule manageable. Previously, when he was playing Challengers, his travel was generally restricted to Europe, with two major trips to Australia and the United States. Traveling more and playing fewer matches – against better opponents – has been challenging. “You learn a lot from the experience,” Van de Zandschulp. I want to finish the season strong and be in the Top 30 at the end of the year – seeded in Australia. That’s the end goal for the year.” Unlike Mannarino, he fully understands what is at stake here in Astana. If he manages to defeat Zhukayev, 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic could await in the second round. “On paper, Novak’s the toughest one in the draw,” said the Netherlands star. “Never played him before, and hopefully I can if I win my first match and he wins his. So, yeah, really looking forward to it. “It’s always nice to play someone for the first time, especially him.”

Rupee Falls 38 Paise To 81.78 Against US Dollar | Business News – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/rupee-falls-38-paise-to-81-78-against-us-dollar-business-news-the-indian-express/ The rupee depreciated 38 paise to 81.78 against the US dollar in early trade on Monday, tracking a muted trend in domestic equities and risk-off sentiment among investors. Besides, surging crude prices in the international market impacted the domestic unit, traders said. At the interbank foreign exchange, the local currency opened weak at 81.65 against the dollar, then lost further ground to quote at 81.78, registering a loss of 38 paise over its previous close. The rupee settled 33 paise higher at 81.40 against the dollar on Friday. Meanwhile, the dollar index, which gauges the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, slipped 0.04 per cent to 112.08. Brent crude futures, the global oil benchmark, surged 2.77 per cent to USD 87.50 per barrel. In the domestic equity market, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading 66.60 points or 0.12 per cent lower at 57,360.32, and the broader NSE Nifty fell 12.90 points or 0.08 per cent to 17,081.45. After infusing funds in the last two months, foreign investors turned sellers again in September, and pulled out Rs 7,600 crore from the Indian equity markets amid a hawkish stance by the US Fed and sharp depreciation in the rupee.

Championing Sustainable Structures – SRQ Daily Oct 3, 2022 – SRQ Magazine https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/championing-sustainable-structures-srq-daily-oct-3-2022-srq-magazine/ House and Home SRQ DAILY MONDAY BUSINESS EDITION MONDAY OCT 3, 2022 | BY ABBY WEINGARTEN Pictured: The award-winning Verandah House was completed in 2015. Photo courtesy of Halflants and Pichette. Tracking trends in sustainable home building has been a decades-long passion of Michael Halflants, FAIA—an award-winning design principal with the Tampa/Sarasota firm, Halflants + Pichette. On September 22, he shared his insights at the Interior Design Society (IDS) Environmental Design Conference: Green Building, Healthy Lives! on the New College of Florida campus. Halflants served on a panel called “Design for Sustainability and Environment,” and focused on the topic of “Sustainable Density.” He joined two other speakers: landscape architect David Young, who discussed “Environmental Landscape Design”; and interior designer Sarit Marcus, who talked about “How to Create an Eco-friendly, Healthy Home.” Q: What are some ways that Sarasota is moving in the direction of sustainable building? A: In Sarasota County, 76 percent of households consist of one or two people, yet most of what’s on the market is living spaces with three bedrooms or more. When the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce surveyed young professionals, almost 80 percent of them stated that they wanted to live in an apartment, and 62 percent of them said they were hoping to find a one- or two-bedroom apartment. If a municipality restricts the number of residential units per acre to an unreasonably low number, as the City of Sarasota does, it encourages the construction of large condominiums to the exclusion of all others. It’s neither sustainable nor equitable to build an entire city of luxury units. The average unit size should be in the range of 1,200 square feet rather than 4,000. A smaller footprint will use less resources to build and bring more residents in close proximity to restaurants and work. Higher density generates less traffic and a smaller carbon footprint per resident. Many municipalities around the country are subjected to a zoning code that makes it difficult to create smaller units, even though they are more sustainable to build and more inviting to a diverse population in terms of income, age and background. These codes can be described as exclusionary zoning where one is excluding potential buyers who can’t afford an enormous unit. It’s not really possible to create affordable units unless we allow for higher density. Many of the building issues we have in the states and worldwide could be improved if we went away from the model of single-family lots. In the U.S., land development is growing twice as fast as population growth. In terms of the global population, we’re already spending resources faster than can be sustained, and it’s something that needs to be addressed. Oktoberfest Pulls In The Crowds For 45th Event – Youngstown Vindicator https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/oktoberfest-pulls-in-the-crowds-for-45th-event-youngstown-vindicator/ BOARDMAN — For 45 years, the Boardman Rotary has hosted an Oktoberfest that brings families from throughout the area and from other states together for a day of fun shopping. The annual event took place Sunday at Boardman Park with thousands of visitors at the all-day event. Shelly Liberto, Rotary president, said of the 200 vendors, about 170 are arts and crafts with the rest being food, nonprofit and commercial vendors. She said they would like to raise more than $45,000. Oktoberfest is Rotary’s largest annual fundraiser. Liberto said a highlight of the day is the 120-member Boardman High School band marching and performing throughout the park. She said the event started as a small flea market that has grown into a car show and now into a large arts and crafts fall show. “We span the park from front to back. It’s a great day to be out and enjoy the fall weather and for people to buy some fun things for their homes or friends. Many start their Christmas shopping today. We have something for everyone. We have things for men as well as children. They appreciate that the money they give today for admission helps so many organizations,” Liberto said. Bob Mastriana of the Rotary said the event is the main fundraiser for the club followed by a maple syrup and pancake breakfast. “We not only get people from across Ohio but from other parts of the country who set up booths or spend the day shopping,” he said. While the club was pleased with 200 vendors, there have been as many as 450 in past years. Mastriana said at one time the event raised $100,000 and now raises between $35,000 and $45,000. “Every dollar we take in goes back into the community with scholarships and philanthropic activities,” he said. He predicted about 10,000 visitors would come through the gates throughout the day. Liberto said the club supports Beatitude House, Boys and Girls Club, Easterseals, Boardman schools and other organizations throughout the year. She said the membership of 63 people volunteer at the event. “It takes all of us to put on an event like this. We are grateful the community is receptive to this each year,” she said. The event was co-chaired by Celeste Lisko and Sheryl Figliano. Shopping for fall decorations were Brenda Romandetti of Canfield and Leisha Zolla of Poland. “I like looking around and seeing what they have,” Romandetti said. “It’s nice to be able to get outside and see all the different crafts and be with friends. It has become a tradition for us,” Zolla said, noting she was looking for a black cat decoration for outside her home. Abby Prokop of Howland said it is a family tradition to attend the Oktoberfest with her sister, Sarah Kominak of Pataskala, who drives up from east of Columbus for the event. “We have always been coming here each fall. We all get together for the day,” Prokop said. She said the family looks for decorations, candy, cookies, jewelry and other items. “I look for yard decorations and decorations for my home. I love crafts,” Vicki Prokop of Newton Falls said. “I like spending the day with everyone. If I see something I like, I’ll get it,” Helen Kominak of Salem said. Angie and Rigo Castillo of Poland said they like looking for Halloween decorations, fall decorations and food. “We like to come here every year and see what they have,” Angie said. Jaclyn Vogliano of North Royalton said she and her friends like to look at the different clothing and the many homemade items. Jessie Pelanda of Poland was with family visiting from Florida and checking out the dogs available for adoption at the Angels for Animals tent. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

UAE’s Latest Bet On Tech: A Ministry In The Metaverse – Malay Mail https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uaes-latest-bet-on-tech-a-ministry-in-the-metaverse-malay-mail/ A file photo taken on July 8, 2022 shows a view of the Museum of the Future in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The UAE has unveiled its first ministry in the Metaverse and a virtual trip to Mars as Dubai attempts to become a hub for the immersive world, which remains in its infancy but is attracting growing interest. — AFP pic Follow us on Instagram, subscribe to our Telegram channel and browser alerts for the latest news you need to know. Monday, 03 Oct 2022 12:46 PM MYT DUBAI, Oct 3 — The United Arab Emirates, which already boasts the world’s tallest skyscraper and has launched a bold Mars mission, now hopes to become a pioneer in the depths of the metaverse. In a project launched at Dubai’s gleaming Museum of the Future, it announced that the UAE’s economy ministry was setting up shop inside the immersive virtual world that is now taking shape. Those who don their virtual reality goggles or use other means to venture within will find a ministry open for business with companies and even ready to sign bilateral agreements with foreign governments, officials said. The metaverse is an online world where users will eventually be able to game, work and study, its proponents say — although it is still in a “test” phase, the UAE’s economy minister conceded. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri was speaking at the inaugural Dubai Metaverse Assembly, held at the museum whose innovative ring shape decorated with Arabic calligraphy flanks the city’s main thoroughfare. Representatives of tech giants mingled with entrepreneurs and developers exploring the potential of the metaverse, a network of digital spaces intended as an extension of the physical world. “In the last couple of years we’ve seen investments, we’ve seen companies move in, and with the changes of the (visa) regime… we see talent coming in,” Al Marri told AFP in an interview. “We trained our employees to really immerse themselves in the metaverse, use the metaverse and engage with the Generation Z that is going to come,” he added. The UAE, which has a history of bold projects including the 830-metre Burj Khalifa, hopes the metaverse can add US$4 billion (RM18 billion) to annual GDP and 40,000 jobs to its workforce by 2030. In its bid to become one of the world’s top-10 metaverse economies, Dubai wants to attract 1,000 companies specialising in blockchain and related technologies, helped by eased visa rules for freelancers, entrepreneurs and creatives. As the coronavirus pandemic pushed more people into the online world, “Covid really accelerated” the trend, Al Marri added. “We thought the metaverse is a phase technology” that might take 10 to 20 years to emerge,” he said. “Covid-19 really immersed us so fast and expedited the use of the metaverse.” A file photo taken on June 20, 2022 shows a view of the Museum of the Future in the Gulf emirate of Dubai. The economy ministry’s Metaverse address, unveiled this week at Dubai’s Museum of the Future, is a place to interact with governments, corporations and even for the UAE to sign bilateral agreements with other countries, officials said. — AFP pic Virtual Mars trips Unlike the UAE’s oil-rich capital, Abu Dhabi, crude represents just five per cent of Dubai’s economy which has pivoted towards business, tourism, real estate and new technologies. The UAE has already introduced a law governing virtual assets and a regulatory body for cryptocurrencies, while welcoming major crypto exchange platforms. One of the UAE’s early private-sector metaverse projects is called 2117, named after the dream of Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid to colonise Mars a century from now. Metaverse users can now buy tickets to join a virtual shuttle carrying settlers to the red planet. “A lot of us won’t live long enough to see this mission with our own eyes,” said Amin Al Zarouni, founder of the Bedu start-up behind the virtual Mars trip. “We’ll try to replicate this experience in the metaverse.” Until now, use of the metaverse is niche and even its architects say widespread adoption is years away. How it will develop is unknown. According to Meta, which owns Facebook and other social media titans, Analysis Group research has shown that the metaverse could add US$360 billion to GDP in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey in 10 years, if it follows the growth pattern of mobile technology. “We also know that when policy supports innovation, it accelerates the adoption of new technologies,” the company said, when asked about Dubai’s prospects of becoming a metaverse hub. “If we look at the context of Dubai, there’s already a clear strategy and goals to accelerate metaverse adoption and investments in the building blocks of the metaverse.” — AFP

Zyron Powerpod And Deskpod Review Smallest GaN Chargers Craving Tech
Zyron Powerpod And Deskpod Review – Smallest GaN Chargers – Craving Tech https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/zyron-powerpod-and-deskpod-review-smallest-gan-chargers-craving-tech/ An Australian company began its journey after launching one of the smallest 66W GaN chargers back in March 2021. GaN charger, if you haven’t heard that before, is basically a modern charger utilising Gallium nitride (GaN) technology to charge devices with less heat and more efficient in charging. Lots of modern laptops can be charged with this technology and it only requires a USB-C cable and a GaN charger, which is relatively much smaller than the traditional laptop chargers that feel like a heavy brick. We’re looking at some cool and compact GaN chargers today from Zyron Tech Australia: the Powerpod and Deskpod. Zyron Powerpod 100 Zyron Powerpod 100 is a compact, 100W USB-C PD Charger. At just 210 grams of weight, it is even lighter than the MacBook Pro 16″ charger yet capable of charging up to 4 devices simultaneously. It comes with an AU plug adapter and foldable, fixed US pin. If you often travel to the UK, EU, or Asian countries, the corresponding travel plugs are also sold separately and will work well with the Powerpod. Note that Zyron sells a few different Powerpod chargers ranging from 65W to 140W. The one I have here (100W) is more than enough for my needs and has enough power to charge my HUAWEI MateBook X Pro 2020 – which only requires 65-Watt to charge. The charger is compatible with other USB-C powered laptops too from various brands like Dell, HP, Apple, Microsoft, etc. And of course, smaller devices like your smartphones and tablet devices. Zyron Powerpod 100 comes with 4 USB ports: 3x USB-C and 1x USB-A port: 1x 100W USB-C PD3.0 Output 1x 100W USB-C PD3.0 Output 1x 20W USB-C PD3.0 Output (for smaller devices like smartphones and tablets). 1x 18W USB-A Quick Charger QC3.0 Output To charge your modern laptop with USB-C, you can simply plug the included 100W USB-C cable into either the first or second slot (you can see the labels clearly on the charger, which is nice so you don’t need to remember which is which). The included cable is one-metre length (which may or may not be long enough for you) with overvoltage & overcurrent protection. While you can charge 4 device simultaneously with the Powerpod, the unit obviously needs to share all the power as you charge, so here’s how it works when you charge more than one device on the Zyron Tech Powerpod 100W: Basically the 100W USB-C power output will go down a bit as it needs to share power with another port but you can pretty much do your own calculation in mind as you pick which port to use to see if you’re happy with the output power. If you are a heavy-charging user, you may want to grab their Powerpod 140W instead. I really like the compact design and simplicity of the Powerpod. The labels are clear and the plugs are interchangeable, making it the perfect GaN charger to use at home and also overseas since you can prepare which plug you are going to need before you go. Zyron Deskpod Zyron Deskpod, as the name suggests, will be on your desk most of the time. It serves as a charging station while simultaneously saving space on the desk. Compared to the Powerpod, the Deskpod can actually charge 2 laptops at 60W simultaneously via its dual USB-C ports. It offers up to 156W max output via its four USB ports in total (two USB-C and two USB-A ports): 1x USB-C 100W 1x USB-C 100W 1x USB-A 18W 1x USB-A 18W You can check the power distribution over on the product page at Zyron Tech website to see what happens when you charge multiple devices simultaneously through these ports. There is a charging stand included in the packaging that can support up to two small devices like your smartphones and tablets. It’s meant to be placed on the desk so you can just plug your laptop on the desk to power and if need be, charge your phone or tablet at the same time. The stand makes it neat to charge while saving the extra space on your desk. But even when you don’t use it to charge your devices, you can still use the stand on itself to place your devices neatly on the desk. A 1-metre cable is also included in the packaging, like the Powerpod. Weighing 306 grams, I can definitely feel the weight when I lift the Powerpod out of the box for the first time. It’s still a great gadget to carry with you on the trip though but you can also place it permanently on your desk so you can power+use your laptop + charge devices when you need to. It removes some clutter from your desk and serves an excellent, yet compact charging station within reach. Make sure to check out the Powerpod and Deskpod over at Zyron Tech, along with the other products they have. Here’s what’s happening: Prices: Bitcoin started what has historically been a strong month about where it ended a dismal September, holding over $19K. Insights: USDC’s stablecoin-fueled model of money, in which the dollar functions as an open “protocol,” could allow innovation to flourish. But healthy competition is a prerequisite. Information about CoinDesk Indices can be found at coindesk.com/indices. October Starts but Fails to Ignite Crypto Prices The opening of the historically crypto boom month of October bore a stronger resemblance to the recent dreary days of September. Bitcoin was recently trading slightly above $19,200, down 0.5% over the past 24 hours and roughly where it stood at the start of the weekend. The largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization rose briefly above $20,000 last week before descending to the ledge it’s occupied for much of the past month. “Indecision and lack of buying above $20,000 are pushing Bitcoin to test its recent lows,” Joe DiPasquale, CEO of BitBull Capital, wrote in an email, adding optimistically: “If we do drop sharply, the price may bottom soon and put up a nice rally. However, most bulls may be scared out of their longs before that happens.” Ether was recently changing hands a little below $1,300, off approximately 1.5% from the previous day. The second largest crypt spent much of the past two weeks trading comfortably above this level. Most other major cryptos were recently off with XRP and ATOM falling more than 4% and 3%, respectively, as investors continued to process a range of largely deteriorating, economic indicators and the latest hawkish comments by U.S. central bank Vice Chair Lael Brainard in a speech Friday. Cryptos tracked equities, which closed a dismal month with a final dismal trading day on Friday. The tech-focused Nasdaq, S&P 500, which has a strong technology component, and Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) all finished down at least 1.5% amid ongoing fears that the struggle to end high inflation is leading inevitably to a harsh recession – a so-called hard, economic landing. By the traditional definition of two, consecutive quarters of negative gross domestic product (GDP) growth, the U.S. has already entered a recession, although its severity and length remain uncertain. The Nasdaq and S&P have decline six of the last seven weeks, and the DJIA recently became the latest index to fall into bear market territory, meaning that it has dropped at least 20% from its last high. A third consecutive monthly decline in pending home sales offered the latest evidence of the once hot housing market’s cooling and wider, economic slowing. Yet the core personal consumption expenditure (PCE), the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of measuring U.S. inflation, was higher than expected in August, rising 4.9% on a year-over-year basis after increasing 4.7% in July. The reading indicated that inflation will continue to plague the U.S. economy and beyond. Meanwhile, the cost of Hurricane Ian in structural damage and economic disruption to the Florida presents a fresh wildcard, as First Republic Bank noted in a weekly review to investors. “The total cost of the hurricane is unknown, but given the scale of this natural disaster, it’s possibly one of the most expensive in U.S. history,” the bank wrote. The overall economic effects depend on the breadth and duration of the disaster.” Investors will be eyeing the release on Monday of September’s ISM Manufacturing index, which is expected to remain unchanged, and the September unemployment rate on Friday, which is expected to remain at its current 3.7% reading. On Saturday, citing three unnamed sources, CoinDesk reported that Indian exchange WazirX had laid off about 40% of the company’s workforce. And U.S. crypto exchange giant Coinbase temporarily halted transactions from U.S. customers, according to a status update made by the crypto exchange at 7:57 a.m. ET Sunday morning. Later Sunday, the Financial Times reported that Alex Mashinsky, the embattled founder and former CEO of Celsius Network, removed $10 million from the now bankrupt crypto lender weeks before Celsius halted customer withdrawals in June. “A terrible week, month, and quarter for stocks was not exactly mirrored by Bitcoin,” wrote Oanda Senior Market Analyst Edward Moya in an email, adding that last week’s declines in bond yields had provided “some relief for crypto.” “Bitcoin’s hodlers remain unfazed and if Wall Street avoids any major de-risking moments, the world’s largest crypto could continue to stabilize here,” he wrote. Biggest Gainers Biggest Losers The Dollar Can Be a Protocol for the Future of Money This week in San Francisco I attended Circle Internet Financial’s star-studded Converge conference and was struck by the wide array of projects working with its USDC stablecoin. Participants included Latin America-based payments company Ripio, which is seeing surging demand for USDC transfers in Brazil and Argentina, or the Web3 service provider Recur, which solely accepts the stablecoin from users of its various metaverse worlds, including Star Trek Continuum. It seems USDC, the second most-traded stablecoin, is developing its own “ecosystem,” a word (perhaps overused) that open-source advocates apply to networks of third-party developers and providers that build on a tech platform. Below I’ll get to a lesson I see here for U.S. lawmakers contemplating what digital form the dollar should take. But let’s first reflect on these ecosystem ideas as they pertain to a stablecoin like USDC. It’s not an obvious concept, though its implications are profound. You’re reading Money Reimagined, a weekly look at the technological, economic and social events and trends that are redefining our relationship with money and transforming the global financial system. Subscribe to get the full newsletter here. Let’s compare Converge to NEARCon, the annual conference sponsored by the Near Foundation I attended two weeks ago in Lisbon. It’s easier to understand that event as an “ecosystem conference.” Like other such gatherings – Ethereum’s Devcon being a prime example – Near uses it to bring together and energize the far-flung community of developers and companies building dapps and other services with smart contracts that run on its protocol. USDC isn’t a smart contract protocol for dapps. It’s primarily a payment vehicle, conceived of by most people as a “coin.” It is a tokenized expression of dollar-based value that happens to be more fluid than non-digital dollars, one that can be exchanged peer-to-peer over public blockchains. (Circle’s launch on Wednesday of a new cross-chain transfer protocol brings USDC a little closer to a more common definition of a crypto protocol, but it’s not why all those third-party, USDC-tied providers attended the event.)… In case you missed it, here is the most recent episode of “First Mover” on CoinDesk TV: Historically, September was a bad month for bitcoin, with the crypto showing negative returns in each of the last five years. Is October’s record better? CoinDesk’s Christie Harkin and George Kaloudis discuss what is impacting the crypto markets and what to watch out for next week. Uzbekistan Introduces Monthly Fees for Crypto Companies Effective Immediately: The new regulations also require crypto custody platforms, mining pools and individual miners to pay monthly fees to the government. Binance Registers in New Zealand and Opens Local Office: Binance has recently made similar moves toward global expansion in France, Italy and Spain, among others. Immigrants Provide Huge Benefits To U.S. Taxpayers – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/immigrants-provide-huge-benefits-to-u-s-taxpayers-forbes/ Getty Images Compelling new research finds immigrants, including those with less than a high school degree, provide enormous fiscal benefits and a significant subsidy to U.S. taxpayers. The research has implications for legislation to admit more employment-based immigrants and immigration more broadly. The most well-regarded fiscal estimates have found immigrants are a net positive for taxpayers. However, some of those estimates concluded that immigrants with less than a high school degree were not, on average, net contributors to government coffers. (Note: A group can be economically beneficial, such as by increasing the supply of productive labor and performing tasks that make others more productive, even if not a net tax contributor.) New research corrects a flaw in earlier analyses that underestimated the fiscal benefits of immigrants, including immigrants with less than a high school degree. Economist Michael Clemens, a senior fellow at the Center for Global Development and an economics professor at George Mason University, has produced new fiscal estimates on the impact of immigrants likely to change the way economists analyze the entry of immigrants for tax and budget purposes. In a paper for the Centre for Research and Analysis of Migration at University College London, Clemens notes the most influential method “simply counts the direct fiscal flows to and from individual immigrants by education level.” He points out this method “omits substantial indirect, dynamic effects of immigration.” Clemens makes a “simple adjustment” to these estimates. The adjustment? “It is to include conservative estimates of tax revenue from capital income caused by an immigrant worker’s presence in the economy.” (Emphasis added.) “Omitting tax revenue from capital contradicts economic theory if the firms that employ immigrants are profit-maximizing,” according to Clemens. “Intuitively, after a firm has set its demand for labor and capital to maximize profits, suppose it raises its labor demand by one to hire an immigrant. Without general-equilibrium shifts in prices or productivity, this increase in labor demand would by definition reduce profits if it occurred without also hiring capital—such as buying an additional computer or renting additional retail space for the worker to use.” Economist Mark Regets, a senior fellow at the National Foundation for American Policy, agrees with the Clemens approach. “It makes sense that employers would invest in computers, machines and office space when hiring new immigrant workers. That profit-maximizing behavior by companies after hiring the additional immigrant workers would result in additional taxes paid and tax revenue received by governments.” An average recent immigrant without a high school degree causes a lifetime positive net fiscal balance of $128,000 using the proper measure, according to Clemens. “Including the expected children and grandchildren of the average immigrant without a high school degree, the lifetime positive net fiscal effect is $326,000.” (Emphasis added.) Clemens explains that by omitting capital tax revenue, an estimate by Blau et al. in 2017—produced as part of a National Academy of Sciences panel—underestimates the positive impact of an average recent immigrant without a high school degree by $381,000. In other words, without taking into account capital tax revenue, Blau et al. had concluded the average immigrant without a high school degree had a (negative) fiscal impact of -$109,000, rather than a positive fiscal impact of $128,000. (Overall, the National Academy of Sciences fiscal estimates on immigrants and their descendants are positive.) The new fiscal estimate—and approach—by Michael Clemens has relevance to the policy debate over immigration. First, Clemens finds that the entry of individuals without a high school degree is a fiscal boon to natives. Individuals with less education are often a target of immigration critics. In a different study, Clemens found the entry of refugees and asylees are also a net positive for U.S. taxpayers. He concluded in a report that the Trump administration reducing refugee admissions cost the U.S. economy more than $9 billion a year and cost governments at all levels $2 billion a year. Second, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) concluded in July 2022 that an amendment on green cards for individuals with Ph.D.s in science and engineering would cost $1 billion over 10 years. As a result, the amendment was not added to the FY 2023 defense authorization bill. Analysts were puzzled how CBO had reached the $1 billion cost estimate. The new fiscal estimates and approach by Michael Clemens would further call into question the CBO finding that the entry of immigrants, particularly highly educated immigrants, would create a fiscal burden for American taxpayers.

The exhibitors include Taiwan’s leading Point of Sale (POS) system vendor Posiflex Technology, which now is the largest supplier of programmable POS system in Saudi Arabia with a 16% market share and the second largest in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) accounting for 21% of shipments in 2021. Posiflex also has established a strong foothold in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and other Middle East and African markets. A global market survey conducted by the premier retail and banking market intelligence firm RBR has revealed the beginning of a global POS market recovery in 2021, with global shipments up 18% on average, mainly boosted by pent-up demands and delayed hardware refreshments in the hospitality sector during the corona virus outbreak and the following lockdowns in 2020. The report forecasts a continual stable growth of POS market over the forecast period from 2022 to 2027, with Asia-Pacific being the world’s largest regional POS market and China the major expansion driver. However, certain mature markets, like North America, Western Europe and smaller markets like Taiwan will see a slight decline in the shipments of POS installations over the forecast period after reaching a post-pandemic peak in 2022, due to the adoption of alternative store technologies like self-help machines and mobile technologies, as the RBR report has noted. To address the present market demands and future developments, Posiflex will bring to GITEX 2022 the best of its desktop and tablet POS products as well as kiosk solutions, including the company’s flagship New ZT series desktop POS, which will make its first appearance in the Dubai event. The New ZT series features a clam shell design allowing easy access to the internal components for convenient maintenance and screw-less design for major components enabling swap ability for easy repair and replacement. In 2016 Posiflex Technology acquired the US-based KIOSK Information Systems and its best-of-breed self-help and interaction technologies, and many of its kiosk units have already been deployed to many of the world’s convenience stores and fast food restaurants providing self-help services. Posiflex will showcase in GITEX 2022 its kiosk models of modular and customizable designs integrating advanced touch display and touchless technologies. “Other than improving hardware designs to keep up with the technology and market trends, Posiflex will focus more on how to increase features that add value, for example, integrating cutting-edge AI and vision modules with kiosk for enabling more fantastic functions and more convenient life,” said Owen Chen, CEO of Posiflex Technology, Inc. To understand more about our products, please visit our booth at H3 – F20, Hall3, Dubai World Trade Center, the United Arab Emirates, during Oct. 10-14.

Nighttime Offers Profitable Opportunities_china.org.cn – China.org.cn https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/nighttime-offers-profitable-opportunities_china-org-cn-china-org-cn/ Be it watching the Peking Opera Farewell My Concubine at Dashila in the nation’s capital, having traditional Beijing snacks across the street, or camping on Shanghai’s bustling Nanjing Road, the nighttime economy is taking off in cities across the nation. The market scale is estimated to be over 40 trillion yuan ($5.7 trillion) this year. As the COVID-19 resurgence is being contained in most Chinese cities, local governments are making the decision to promote business and consumption at night in a bid to capture opportunities at sundown. The municipal government of Beijing decided to issue 100 million yuan worth of consumption coupons and designed up to 10 nighttime traveling routes to boost the capital’s nighttime economy, the Workers’ Daily reported. More than 20 key business areas and about 10,000 brands take part in various night activities extended through November, the report added. In East China’s Shanghai, ten iconic scenic spots across the city are also embracing the nighttime economy. As a city built on fashion and innovation, Shanghai is ready to add more hustle and bustle to its evening entertainment repertoire. In Chongqing, more than 200 featured activities online and offline were held so far this year, making it a sleepless city, the Economy &Nation Weekly under the Xinhua News Agency reported. In Xi’an of Shaanxi province, consumption of culture and tourism at night is expected to create new growth opportunities, and the provincial capital has allocated several tourism and consumption areas for the nighttime economy including the Xi’an Grand Tang pedestrian street and the City Wall, Shaanxi Daily reported. About 60 percent of consumption in China takes place at night, according to a report on urban residents’ spending habits by the Ministry of Commerce, said Shen Jiani, a senior researcher from the strategic research center of Trip.com, a tourism platform. The overall business scale of the nation’s nighttime economy has been expanding rapidly since 2016, thanks to local government policy support, increased venues for consumption at night, as well as people’s rising appetite for spending in the evening, according to a research report from iiMedia Research. “The Chinese nighttime economy surpassed 30 trillion yuan by the end of 2020, a growth of 5 percent year-on-year, and the figure is projected to exceed 40 trillion yuan in 2022,” the report said. “Consumption holds great significance to China’s economy, so we can see governments of various levels launching all kinds of measures and businesses to shore up consumption,” said Zhang Yi, chief analyst with iiMedia Research. “According to our research, most of the consumption activities are made by Chinese people during 6:00 pm to 2:00 am, both online and offline, showing the nighttime economy has great potential,” Zhang explained. Contrary to the stereotyped impression that consumption at night is usually referring to food and snacks, the iiMedia Research survey shows it covers much wider activities like delivery services, online shopping, and many other cultural and entertainment activities. “It is a blending of food, shopping, entertainment, tourism, exercise, exhibitions and shows, and the rapid development of digitalization has made consumption more convenient and easier,” Zhang added. The Chinese New Year holiday this year, for example, showed people’s consumption at night totaled 379 billion yuan, up 27.06 percent year-on-year and accounted for 33.7 percent of all spending during the holiday, the iiMedia Research report on the nighttime economy showed. In terms of business, dining and snacks accounted for 28.9 percent of the total spending in the evening, followed by shopping at 28.7 percent, entertainment at 19.9 percent and tourism at 15.8 percent, the report added. Nighttime economy associated with cultural consumption, tourism and leisure activities has become a strategic part of the nation’s economy and social development, Zhao Yijing, head of nighttime tourism research at the China Tourism Academy was quoted as saying by Xinhua News Agency. As an extension of daytime traveling, tourism in the evening is gradually taking shape over the past several years. The nighttime traveling economy could be an effective solution for boosting consumption and activating the domestic economy, said Shen Jiani with Trip.com, adding that summer vacation is the annual peak for traveling in the evening. Over the past five years, ticket booking volumes during summer vacations for touring scenic spots at night are usually 120 percent that of conventional evenings. Specifically, Trip.com found that tickets booked in July for evening travel swell 138 percent month-on-month, and saw a growth of 165 percent from the previous month in terms of passenger trips. Discovering this trend, local governments have already tapped into this emerging market by laying out night touring development schemes. More than 200 cities have so far launched their own nighttime cultural and tourism revitalization plans including nighttime traveling routes, performances, arts and exhibitions among others, according to statistics from the China Tourism Academy. Since the beginning of the year, dozens of Chinese cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen of Guangdong province, Wuhan of Hubei province, Chengdu of Sichuan province, Changsha of Hunan province, and Xi’an of Shaanxi province have launched their own policies in supporting cultural and travel activities at night, said Shen. Despite the strong demand for high-quality nighttime traveling products, the majority of the offerings on the market, however, are focused on traditional dining, drinking and shopping. Therefore, there is a shortage of integrated and high-quality products, Shen added. “From the supply perspective, there is spacious room for enhancing nighttime cultural and tourism products in terms of diversification, breadth and depth. The high-quality development of the nighttime economy looks for more cultural embodiment,” Zhao Yijing with the China Tourism Academy said. China’s large population, its active and innovative online and offline business models, as well as the nation’s culture and history, create broad opportunities for the nighttime economy to explode, Zhang Yi of iiMedia Research suggested. According to Zhang, over the past few years, Chinese people’s consumption at night was characterized by an increased proportion of online purchases, rising demand for cultural spending, a smaller gap between eastern Chinese cities and inland areas in the west, as well as robust growth in medium and small cities.

Business News: GF Sales Tax…UND Construction & Digital Ranking – Knoxradio https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/business-news-gf-sales-taxund-construction-digital-ranking-knoxradio/ Consumers spent a bit more in August than the previous month, a sign the economy is holding up even as inflation lifts prices for food, rent, and other essentials. Americans boosted their spending at stores and for services such as haircuts by 0.4% in August, after it fell 0.2% in July, the Commerce Department. Battered by surging consumer prices and rising interest rates, the U.S. economy shrank at a 0.6% annual rate from April through June, the government announced Thursday, unchanged from its previous second-quarter estimate. It marked the second consecutive quarter of economic contraction, one informal rule of thumb for a recession. Grand Forks collected a record $3.45 million dollars in local sales taxes in the September payment.  That beat the previous all-time high of $3.3 million set in February.  That pushes the year-to-date tally to $23.1 million dollars – an increase of 9.19 over the same time one-year ago.  Finance officials say recent events attracting out-of-town guests may have bolstered the numbers.  Hotel occupancy in September was up 17% during the collection period. The number of Americans filing for jobless benefits dropped last week, a sign that few companies are cutting jobs despite high inflation and a weak economy. Applications for unemployment benefits for the week ending Sept. 24 fell by 16,000 to 193,000.  Last week’s number was revised down by 4,000 to 209,000. First-time applications generally reflect layoffs. The August unemployment rate for Grand Forks County remains under two-percent.  The jobless rate of 1.9% compares to 2.5% one year ago.  A total of 723 people were in search of work last month. Cirrus Aircraft has announced plans to expand its maintenance facility in Duluth into a center for innovation.  The 189,000 square foot building sits on 39 acres of land.  Cirrus operates in seven locations in the United States including Grand Forks. UND expects to break ground next spring on an addition to the Fritz Pollard Jr. Athletic Center.  It’s part of the master facility plan for UND Athletics that was announced during Homecoming Week.  The addition would be connected to Memorial Village via indoor “Hawkway.”  It would also provide new locker rooms for cross country, football, softball and track and field…a state-of-the-art weight room…new sports medicine/treatment areas…and replaces the turf and track on current Memorial Field . The Center for Digital Government has released the results of its 2022 Digital State Survey.  The evaluation is intended to assign a letter grade to the IT practices of all 50 states.  Minnesota was among six states scoring an “A” in the analysis.  North Dakota received a “B+” ranking. Altru Health Foundation raised over $395,000 dollars at its recent Altru Gala at the REA.  The funds will help establish a new patient program with Outpatient Therapy Services called Sensory Life Project.  It targets individuals of all ages with sensory processing difficulties. A new Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) grant is helping 44 Minnesota service stations offer customers more and greener options at the pump.  The Agricultural Growth, Research, and Innovation (AGRI) Biofuels Infrastructure Grant Program is awarding over $6.4 million to offset the cost of investing in upgraded retail petroleum dispensers, fuel storage tanks, and other equipment compatible with motor fuel containing higher blends of ethanol. This Thanksgiving, your pumpkin pie might have a lower carbon footprint. Farmers in central Illinois who supply 85% of the world’s canned pumpkin are adopting regenerative techniques to reduce emissions, attract bees and other pollinators and improve soil health. The effort is backed by Libby’s, which is owned by Nestle. It’s one of several big companies that have started regenerative farming programs in the last few years, including General Mills, PepsiCo and Walmart.

‘Lagos Megacity’ll Have Solar Roofs, Helipad’ – Punch Newspapers https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/lagos-megacityll-have-solar-roofs-helipad-punch-newspapers/ The Managing Director of GIDI Homes, Akerele Tobi, during the inauguration of Eko Beach City, said the developers of the city are in partnership with international companies for the provision of solar roofs and helipads for all residents of Eko Beach City. The recent inauguration of hundreds of acres of land mega-city in the Abijo area of the state was done in collaboration with three major brands, KOEN Homes, RIEL Homes, and GIDI Homes, alongside other passive collaborators. Akerele said Eko Beach City was a vision, mission and a movement. He said, “We are creators of earth green and aqua city in Nigeria, and we are changing from the normal. “We are in partnership with a firm that has over 40,000 consultants. People believe the vision to be able to enjoy a healthy environment they would love to be part of. “The main challenge is that our policies in the country can be changed overnight and investors would not want to come into a country that does not have regulated policies. According to him, one of the challenges faced was that of government policies, and the government should partner the private sector more. He noted that the aim of the development of the city was affordability. Akerele said, “What we are doing is that at least, you do not have to break the bank, you should be able to afford a healthy environment. “There is a difference between just buying land and buying comfort and peace of mind, where you can sleep at night and have the best feel.” The developer said Eko Beach City was the first residential scheme that would have the beach. He said, “The city has a helipad, so once there’s traffic, we are trying to say that there is a way we can beat this traffic. “Also, we are working with our waterways. Now, all these are unique. The most important part of it is the area of healthy living. According to statistics, we were made to understand that 80 per cent of the death of our newer children in Nigeria is caused by polluted air. “That is why we are planting about 5,000 trees in Eko Beach City to get a purer air. That is why I would say that Eko Beach City is the answer and the future.” In addition, he said the future of real estate in Nigeria, Lagos especially, would keep on increasing, because demand was more than the supply. The Chief Operating Officer of Eko Beach City, Ayorinde Ejioye, enjoined the government to provide mortgages for real estate companies to enable client’s pay for a period of 10 years, without affecting the operations of the real estate company involved.

Mahomes hits Kelce on the back shoulder up the seam, right behind Devin White’s head. That’s outrageous. Pinned Noah Gray thought he was going to have to help Orlando Brown on the inside but Mike Edwards came on the blitz, and Mahomes didn’t see him in time to escape the sack. Pinned Headed to the fourth quarter with Kansas City up 38-24. Pinned That’s the first TD of Rachaad White’s career. Nice comeback in this game after the fumble on the opening kickoff. He also has four catches for 39 yards. Pinned Oh no. Now Chris Godwin is back on the ground again. He also got hurt in his first game back, back in Week 1. Ugh. Pinned Somebody named Cole Kieft just caught that pass. If you knew who he was before that snap, good for you. Pinned Really like the design on that pass to White. He started lined up outside, motioned back toward the backfield, but immediately went back out for a swing pass. Nice job to get him into space. Pinned Looked like Mike Evans might have landed out of bounds on that back-shoulder throw, but it’s not going to matter either way because there was pass interference on Jaylen Watson anyway.  Pinned Cameron Brate has now been ruled out with a concussion, despite having come back into the game earlier. Pinned This time it’s Jody Fortson into the end zone. Usually the Chiefs use Kelce on the back side of a 3×1 formation, but this time it’s Fortson. He’s a huge dude, and he just boxed out Carlton Davis for the score. Pinned Mahomes was able to break contain from the pocket, but somebody blew a coverage because Skyy Moore was absolutely wide open. Nobody within five yards of him. Pinned Oh that’s a nice design. Faked the RPO swing pass and then hit MVS over the top. Antoine Winfield and Carlton Davis caught peeking into the backfield. Pinned JuJu looks huge now that he’s wearing No. 9. Don’t fact check that, it’s science. Pinned What’s the record for most consecutive pass plays? Asking for a friend. I’m assuming Mike Tirico will let us know if the Bucs are getting close to it. Pinned Fournette completely whiffed on a block on the corner blitz. Rashad Fenton should’ve had a sack but Brady spun out of it and just launched the ball downfield. Pinned Filling in for Harrison Butker (and Matt Ammendola, who was cut earlier this week), Matthew Wright knocks in a 43-yard field goal to push the lead to 31-17. Pinned Quick screen to JuJu on third-and-10 and it picks up a first down. Nice job getting out front by Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey. Pinned Skyy Moore getting in on the action here in the second half. The Chiefs have been looking to get him more involved, but he muffed two punts last week so it didn’t happen. Maybe he will have more of a role these next few weeks. Pinned Reminder: the Chiefs will get the ball first here despite scoring 46 seconds into this game. Rachaad White fumbled the opening kickoff. Pinned Pinned Holy cow, Mike Evans. Pinned Cameron Brate back in the game after running into Chris Godwin earlier, and he draws a pass interference in the end zone to set the Bucs up with first-and-goal. Pinned First target and reception of the night for Julio Jones, and it’s a big third-down conversion to keep the drive moving. Then Brady finds Godwin over the middle to get just outside of field-goal range. Pinned Almost a terrific play in open space by Juan Thornhill, but Cameron Brate is JUST able to keep his balance and extend for the first down to keep Tampa’s drive alive. That’s big. Pinned Usually it’s Travis Kelce on the tight end sneak, but this time it’s Noah Gray. Nice acting by Mahomes to distract the defense. Pinned Pinned Well, now the Chiefs have the ball right back. L’Jarius Sneed with the slot blitz for a strip-sack, and Chris Jones on the recovery. I guess it’s like CEH caught the pass for a first down. Pinned Wow. CEH absolutely wide open and might still be running if he caught the ball. Perfect play and it just falls to the ground. Pinned A lot of the KC run game tonight has been on delays, draws, and Y-insert plays where they are having the RB hesitate a bit and power behind multiple blockers through the hole. Working quite well. See More

I just picked a random shop. I got 2000 points (Roblox money) for building the shop setting up clothing racks, furniture etc. and instructions give you an idea of how to do it but the items are priced too high to fill the shop or do much with the decore. Forever 21 shop from Forever 21 Shop city It is heavily promoted that Forever 21 shop city metaverse features four themed divisions- entertainment, obstacle course, food court, and yellow carpet. After running around in circles, I could only identify three areas viz shop, food court, and the yellow carpet that leads to the Forever 21 Store. I tried using different devices and joining at different time of the day, but the navigation in the metaverse was difficult. In the game, you are expected to set up a shop, earn points to add features to your shop like exterior and interior designs, architectural themes, lights, and seating arrangements. I tried decking racks with stock from the shop builder but the clothing was not available. The instructions suggested did not work for me on any device. Since, this was the main function in the metaverse, I tried harder and I watched few videos of influencers who have built their shops. But the influencer videos are made from level 3 or above so it is difficult to explain how to reach the level where clothing is available. Also, I had to figure out how to earn the points on my own by watching multiple videos on YouTube. When you reach the Forever 21 Store, a yellow carpet is laid out to welcome you (I guess). The Forever 21 Store is a four floor hyper-urban building with each floor dedicated to clothing, collections (Collab 21), store furniture and décor. Just outside the store entrance, there is a herd of paparazzi waiting for your pictures and cheers every time you enter or exit the Forever 21 Store in the metaverse (refer promo video). It was quite a unique element and a good add on. Inside the Store, you will find more furniture and design elements than the actual products. The Store sells furniture set-up for shops too. But this is the place where we expected Forever 21 to put more of its own products from the fashion line. Even though the mannequins are decked up in Forever 21 clothing and accessories, you get the option to buy only a few items that are in the display, not the entire look. Forever 21 Store Collection Collaboration displayed on second floor There are some unique and interesting elements like you can collect goodies laying on the road or just roam around the city or eating from street food vendors. I was more interested in checking out different food vendors on the roads than doing the runs between the Store and my shop. No food was served to me though. Clearly, the current experience is flawed and would need improvement in every aspect. A Hit Or A Miss? Reach: As per some reports, Forever 21 Shop City metaverse has had 49.4 million daily active users after a month of its launch. The Roblox game page of Forever 21 Shop City tells a different story though. It shows the game has 0 active players as of today. There were 255.4k+ visits till date in total ever since the game launched on December 14, 2021. Screenshot of Roblox Forever 21 Shop City home page Engagement: In the attempt to offer immersive customer experience, Forever 21 Shop City missed out on basic user-experience. The concept was interesting; however, the experience fails to be sticky. There are various flaws in the game. The brand is too pushy with putting itself out there way too much on the street, store and floor. The game plan of users creating their own shops was different but the routine execution of ‘sell apparels, manage the shop customers, and run from shop to the Forever 21 Store to collect inventory and repeat’ is all too generic and bland. There are technical flaws in the game where your avatar might get stuck and you will have to figure out how to get out and get going. I felt, there is an opportunity for the brand to do a lot more with the metaverse given the space, time, and concept of a real market to make the experience more engaging. Conversion: The brand claims certain products became too popular in the game such as digital black beanies with the word “Forever” were a massive hit on the virtual world platform. It sold about 2,000 units a day at 50 cents each, and is on track to sell 1.5 million units by the end of this year. The cost to create them however, was less than $500 total. Virtual Brand Group makes a number of claims on its website about Forever 21 brand presence, community, and sales. However, these claims are to be verified. In my honest opinion, Forever 21 has a long way to go in the metaverse to achieve what they have envisioned in terms of engagement and conversion. The brand could have achieved the current short term benefits in a much lesser cost just by selling NFTs or add-ons with other game collaborations. By venturing into a dedicated gamified fashion retail metaverse, they over-complicated things for themselves. I think the brand realises this and that is why they launched a digital store for wearables (a collection of NFTs only) in the Decentraland and threw a massive launch party on March 27, 2022.

3 Simple Tips For An Ergonomic Laptop Experience For Your Teens And Tweens – Cool Mom Tech https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/3-simple-tips-for-an-ergonomic-laptop-experience-for-your-teens-and-tweens-cool-mom-tech/ If your kids are using a laptop or Chromebook for their schoolwork (or gaming), there are a few simple things you can teach them (and purchase) to help them avoid tech neck. Yes, it’s totally a thing (says the person who’s on her computer most hours of the day). Here are our tips, tricks, and gadgets that you’ll be glad to know about. Cool Mom Tech is a reward style affiliate.  Read this post about blue light glasses. Do kids need them? 1. Make sure the laptop or chromebook is at eye height. As tempting as it might be for your teens or tweens to sit on the couch or in bed, it’s actually pretty terrible for their necks. If you’ve got a designated work space for them, consider investing in a laptop stand, like this highly-rated option that even has a photo stand too, which will help raise their laptop up to their eye level. You can also easily store it in the cabinet or shelf, and they can just pull it out when they’re working at the kitchen table (which is what my kids do). 2. If you’ve got their computer on a stand, an ergonomic keyboard is a good idea, like this one that’s pretty popular with tech users. Not all keyboards are created equal; an ergonomic one is actually created to ensure the user’s hands are in a comfortable position. The same goes for an ergonomic mouse as well. This one from Logitech is on the pricier side but the reviews are fantastic. It’s a worthy investment if your kids are on their computer a fair amount, which seems like the case for most kids (but especially kids who are doing online school). 3. Along with a good chair, make sure your kids know the importance of taking breaks. The 20-20-20 rule is extremely effective and it’s so easy to remember: Take a break every 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This helps rest their brains and their eyes. It’s also not a bad idea for them to get up and move around, too, which if your kids are like mine, might be tricky if they’re using their laptop for Minecraft or other gaming purposes. Keep in mind, these tips aren’t just for tweens or teens. If you’re like me and happen to work on a computer all day long, these are important tips to consider for yourself, too. Ex-CEO Of Bankrupt Crypto Lender Celsius Withdrew $10M Weeks Before Company Froze Customer Accounts: Report – CoinDesk https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ex-ceo-of-bankrupt-crypto-lender-celsius-withdrew-10m-weeks-before-company-froze-customer-accounts-report-coindesk/ James Rubin is CoinDesk’s U.S. news editor based on the West Coast. Alex Mashinsky, the embattled founder and former CEO of Celsius Network, removed $10 million from the now bankrupt crypto lender weeks before Celsius halted customer withdrawals in June, the Financial Times reported, citing unnamed sources. Mashinsky, who resigned as CEO Sept. 27 Eastern time, withdrew the cryptocurrency in May, according to the FT. At the time, crypto markets were being roiled by the collapse of the Terra ecosystem, which saw $60 billion in value evaporate that month. Celsius is supposed to submit details about Mashinsky’s transactions to the court in a few days as part of a wider financial disclosure by the company, the FT reported. A Mashinsky spokesperson, cited by the paper, said that the entrepreneur had disclosed to an unsecured creditors committee (UCC) in the bankruptcy proceedings that he and his family had $44 million in crypto frozen with Celsius following the withdrawal. The spokesperson said that Mashinsky “‘withdrew a percentage of cryptocurrency in his account, much of which was used to pay state and federal taxes,'” according to the FT. Celsius froze withdrawals, swaps and transfers on its platform in June, citing “extreme market conditions” before filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection one month later in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. In a subsequent court filing, Celsius said it had a $1.2 billion hole in its balance sheet. That document showed that Celsius held $4.3 billion of assets and $5.5 billion of liabilities. In a statement at the time of the initial bankruptcy filing, Celsius said that “without a pause, the acceleration of withdrawals would have allowed certain customers – those who were first to act – to be paid in full while leaving others behind to wait for Celsius to harvest value from illiquid or longer-term asset deployment activities before they receive a recovery.” Mashinsky then called the decision “right…for our community and company,” adding that in the history of Celsius, “we will see this as a defining moment, where acting with resolve and confidence served the community and strengthened the future of the company.” Sign up for State of Crypto, our weekly newsletter examining the intersection of cryptocurrency and government By signing up, you will receive emails about CoinDesk product updates, events and marketing and you agree to our terms of services and privacy policy. Pro-Russian Groups Are Raising Funds In Crypto To Prop Up Military Operations And Evade U.S. Sanctions – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pro-russian-groups-are-raising-funds-in-crypto-to-prop-up-military-operations-and-evade-u-s-sanctions-cnbc/ Russian paramilitary groups are raising funds in cryptocurrency using messaging app Telegram, according to research published by TRM Labs. Matt Cardy | Getty Images News | Getty Images Pro-Russian groups are raising funds in cryptocurrency to prop up paramilitary operations and evade U.S. sanctions as the war with Ukraine wages on, a research report published Monday revealed. As of Sept. 22, these fundraising groups had raised $400,000 in cryptocurrency since the start of the invasion on Feb. 24, according to TRM Labs, a digital asset compliance and risk management company. The research revealed that groups, using encrypted messaging app Telegram, are offering ways for people to send funds which are used to supply Russian-affiliated militia groups and support combat training at locations close to the border with Ukraine. One group TRM Labs identified raising funds is Task Force Rusich which the U.S. Treasury describes as a “neo-Nazi paramilitary group that has participated in combat alongside Russia’s military in Ukraine.” The Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFCA) has sanctioned Task Force Rusich. On a Telegram channel, TRM Labs discovered this group was looking to raise money for items such as thermal imaging equipment and radios. The Novorossia Aid Coordinating Center, which was set up in 2014 to support Russian operations in Ukraine, raised about $21,000 in cryptocurrency, mainly bitcoin, with the aim of buying drones, the report said. Russia was hit by a number of sanctions after its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine earlier this year that aimed to cut it off from the global financial system. At the time, there were concerns that Russia could use cryptocurrency to evade these penalties. However, experts said that there is not enough liquidity in the crypto system on the scale Russia would require to move money. But with the paramilitary groups, they’re moving money on a smaller scale, which is enough for the items they need to buy. These groups are likely using exchanges that don’t necessarily comply with anti-money laundering and other regulations, according to Ari Redbord, head of legal and government affairs at TRM Labs. “They’re probably using non-compliant exchanges to off-ramp those funds [into fiat currency],” Redbord told CNBC. “And you can do that. You just can’t do that at scale. And I think that’s that that’s where … we’ll say, will there be more? Of course, there’ll be more. But will it be billions of dollars? Highly unlikely.” Redbord said TRM Labs used a combination of publicly available wallet addresses as well as cross-checking other websites and activity online to identify the Russian-linked groups. However, he did say it’s not possible to know whether these groups were working with the Russian government or are in any way backed by the Kremlin. Cryptocurrencies have been thrust into the spotlight during the Russia and Ukraine war. Ukraine has been seeking donations via digital coins, which can be sent quickly across the world. But they’re now also being used by Russian paramilitary groups. “I think an interesting part of this story is that crypto is just a form of payment in these cases. It’s a way to move funds. And there’s an example of it being used for good and example of it being used for bad in this context,” Redbord said.
