Russia Withdraws Troops After Ukraine Encircles Key City – The Associated Press – En Español https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/russia-withdraws-troops-after-ukraine-encircles-key-city-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — After being encircled by Ukrainian forces, Russia pulled troops out Saturday from an eastern Ukrainian city that it had been using as a front-line hub. It was the latest victory for the Ukrainian counteroffensive that has humiliated and angered the Kremlin. Russia’s withdrawal from Lyman complicates its internationally vilified declaration just a day earlier that it had annexed four regions of Ukraine — an area that includes Lyman. Taking the city paves the way for Ukrainian troops to potentially push further into land that Moscow now illegally claims as its own. “The Ukrainian flag is already in Lyman, Donetsk region. Fighting is still going on there. But there is no trace of any pseudo-referendum there,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in his nightly address Saturday. He was referring to “referendums” that Russia held at gunpoint in the four regions before annexing them — Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson. The fighting comes at a pivotal moment in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war. Facing Ukrainian gains on the battlefield — which he frames as a U.S.-orchestrated effort to destroy Russia — Putin this week heightened threats of nuclear force and used his most aggressive, anti-Western rhetoric to date. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have inflicted damage on Ukrainian forces in battling to hold Lyman, but said outnumbered Russian troops were withdrawn to more favorable positions. Ukrainian forces moved into the city, and Zelenskyy’s chief of staff posted photos of a Ukrainian flag being hoisted on the town’s outskirts. Lyman had been an important link in the Russian front line for ground communications and logistics. Located 160 kilometers (100 miles) southeast of Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, it’s in the Donetsk region near the border with Luhansk, two regions that Russia annexed Friday. Ukrainian forces have retaken vast swaths of territory in a counteroffensive that started in September. They have pushed Russian forces out of the Kharkiv area and moved east across the Oskil River. Moscow’s withdrawal from Lyman prompted immediate criticism from some Russian officials. The leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, blamed the retreat, without evidence, on one Russian general being “covered up for by higher-up leaders in the General Staff.” He called for “more drastic measures.” Meanwhile, on the Russian-annexed Crimean Peninsula, the governor of the city of Sevastopol announced an emergency situation at an airfield there. Explosions and huge billows of smoke could be seen by beachgoers in the Russian-held resort. Authorities said a plane rolled off the runway at the Belbek airfield, and said ammunition on board had caught fire. Russia annexed the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 in violation of international law. Russian bombardment has intensified in recent days as Moscow moved swiftly with its latest annexation and ordered a mass mobilization at home to bolster its forces. The Russian call-up has proven unpopular at home, prompting tens of thousands of Russian men to flee the country. Zelenskyy and his military have vowed to keep fighting to liberate the regions that Putin claimed to have annexed Friday, and other Russian-occupied areas. Ukrainian authorities accused Russian forces of targeting two humanitarian convoys in recent days, killing dozens of civilians. The governor of the Kharkiv region, Oleh Syniehubov, said 24 civilians were killed in an attack this week on a convoy trying to flee the Kupiansk district. He called it “сruelty that can’t be justified.” He said 13 children and a pregnant woman were among the dead. “The Russians fired at civilians almost at point-blank range,” Syniehubov wrote on Telegram. The Security Service of Ukraine, the secret police force known by the acronym SBU, posted photographs of the attacked convoy. At least one truck appeared to have been blown up, with burned corpses in what remained of its truck bed. Another vehicle at the front of the convoy was torched. Bodies lay on the side of the road or still inside vehicles that were pockmarked with bullet holes. Russia’s Defense Ministry said its rockets destroyed Ukrainian military targets in the area but has not commented on accusations that it targeted fleeing civilians. Russian troops have retreated from much of the Kharkiv region but continue to shell the area. And a Russian strike in the Zaporizhzhia region’s capital killed 31 people and wounded 88, Ukrainian officials said. The British Defense Ministry said the Russians “almost certainly” struck a humanitarian convoy there with S-300 anti-aircraft missiles. Russian-installed officials in Zaporizhzhia blamed Ukrainian forces but gave no evidence. In other developments, in an apparent attempt to secure Moscow’s hold on the newly annexed territory, Russian forces seized the director-general of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Ihor Murashov, on Friday, according to the Ukrainian state nuclear company Energoatom. Energoatom said Russian troops stopped Murashov’s car, blindfolded him and took him to an undisclosed location. Russia did not comment on the report. The International Atomic Energy Agency said Russia told it that “the director-general of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant was temporarily detained to answer questions.” The Vienna-based IAEA said it “has been actively seeking clarifications and hopes for a prompt and satisfactory resolution of this matter.” The power plant has been caught in the crossfire of the war. Ukrainian technicians continued running it after Russian troops seized the power station, and its last reactor was shut down in September as a precautionary measure amid ongoing shelling nearby. In other fighting reported Saturday, four people were killed by Russian shelling Friday in the Donetsk region, governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said. The Russian army struck the southern Ukrainian city of Mykolaiv twice overnight, once with drones and the second time with missiles, according to the regional governor. Russia now claims sovereignty over 15% of Ukraine in what NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg called “the largest attempted annexation of European territory by force since the Second World War.” Zelenskyy on Friday formally applied for NATO membership, upping the pressure on Western allies to defend Ukraine. In Washington, President Joe Biden signed a bill that provides another infusion — more than $12.3 billion — in military and economic aid linked to the war in Ukraine. ___ Follow AP’s coverage of the war in Ukraine at https://apnews.com/hub/russia-ukraine

Meal Prepping And Sustainable Living Doesn’t Have To Be A Daunting Task – The Martlet https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/meal-prepping-and-sustainable-living-doesnt-have-to-be-a-daunting-task-the-martlet/ Illustration by Sie Douglas-Fish. With fall classes started, it can be easy to find yourself on campus rushed between classes and hungry, forcing you to turn to one of the many convenient food options around you. Similarly, cooking dinner after a long day while homework is piling up around you might be the last thing you want to worry about, making fast food or takeout look that much more appealing. While there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a meal out, it can be easy to fall into a habit of relying on it. Eating out every day can quickly become a staggering expense, not to mention that it can be difficult to know exactly how healthy what you’re eating is and where the ingredients came from. Cooking for yourself — especially for students living away from home for the first time — can feel daunting. The planning, grocery shopping, execution, and cleanup can make opening up SkipTheDishes or Uber Eats seem like the best option. But, cooking for yourself and meal prepping can be a great way to save money, eat better, live more sustainably, and build habits and skills that will stay helpful throughout your entire life. Getting Started The easiest way to fail at building a new habit is to go all in too quickly. Staying consistent with small progressions slowly will make lifestyle changes actually effective. Try bringing lunch to campus once a week, or swapping takeout with a homemade dinner. Once you feel comfortable with these changes, then you can increase their frequency. If you truly have zero cooking experience, try not to feel intimidated. We live in a world of endless content online ranging from absolute basics to complex techniques, all for free and with video instructions. YouTube and other social media can teach anything from knife skills to meal ideas. Some content creators with easy-to-follow recipes and techniques are Adam Ragusea, Ethan Chlebowski, and Pro Home Cooks. Meal Prep Essentials Meal prepping is the act of cooking a large quantity of food or meals and portioning it to eat throughout the week. It is a great way to get rid of the hard choice of deciding what to eat during the week, as well as saving on cooking and cleaning time. The most important thing for starting to meal prep is a good set of containers. This can be anything from two-dollar tupperware to expensive bamboo bento boxes. Anything that can effectively store and hold food will do the trick. There is a reason so many internet chefs use plastic deli containers, as they are cheap, stack well in the fridge, and are incredibly versatile. Just try to get something that won’t explode open in your backpack during class. Consider the following when picking what to meal prep: how will this keep throughout the week, how quickly will I get tired of eating it, and does it fit with my lifestyle and sustainability goals. Try cooking new things, exploring new cuisines, and finding recipes that you actually want to eat. Sustainability Buying in bulk can be an economical and more sustainable way to do your grocery shopping. Instead of trying to buy all your food at once, shop around. Slowly build up a pantry of basics. Use apps like Flipp to look for weekly specials. Utilize the many specialty grocery stores in Victoria for ingredients that you may have never heard or thought of. Cutting down on meat and animal products can be a great way to reduce food costs and lead a more environmentally friendly and healthy lifestyle. Vegan does not need to mean bland or boring. With plant-based protein sources like tofu, lentils, seitan, and a wide array of fake meats like Impossible and Beyond, it’s never been easier to try and make changes in your diet. Many cultures and cuisines around the world have been plant-based for centuries, and have great ideas for meatless dishes. If you’re wanting to take your sustainability further, you can look towards trying one of the sustainable stores in town, like the Zero Waste Emporium or West Coast Refill. Interested in learning how to grow your own food? Try getting involved with the UVic community garden. With the rapidly increasing costs of living, buying enough groceries for a full week at once can be financially undoable for many. The UVSS Food Bank and Free Store is a stigma-free way to get groceries and household items if you are a student in need, and can be visited by appointment in the basement of the Student Union Building.

Video & Transcript: Kirk Ferentz Michigan Postgame – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/video-transcript-kirk-ferentz-michigan-postgame-sports-illustrated/ KIRK FERENTZ: I’m never discouraged by our players. I thought the effort was there. I thought we had a good week of preparation and practice. I thought the guys were wired in, and we knew what we were up against, what we had to do today to be successful. Credit our opponent; they did a good job of setting the tone and made it difficult for us in offensive and defensive phases, special teams maybe not as much, but they did a good job there. As crazy as it may sound, from where I stood, I thought our guys played hard and I saw some growth in our football team. Time will tell. We’ll go from there. We’ll look at the tape tomorrow. We’ll go back and lick our wounds a little bit, hopefully learn and grow. We’ll move forward on Monday, and that’s our plan right now. We have a bye week coming up after this, and we’ve known that, and our request to our players is be focused on these six weeks, the six-week block, and we’ll figure things out afterward, and that’s our plan, and I’ll open it up for questions. Q. What challenges did Michigan’s rushing attack, especially Blake Corum, pose for you guys? KIRK FERENTZ: He’s an outstanding back, first and foremost. Really good football player. That didn’t surprise us. You look at film, you can see that. And then they’re good up front. Those guys last year and this year are really blocking well. They have good tight ends that block well. The other part of the equation is they threaten you outside. They have really good receivers and a quarterback that can get it out to them. You have to choose your poison a little bit defensively, and if you load up too much in one area, you’re going to be vulnerable in another spot. Q. How encouraging is Luke Lachey’s emergence? KIRK FERENTZ: Really good. I can’t say we’re surprised. We’ve been watching him grow and develop. I don’t know what his age was actual age was when we recruited him, but he looked like he was 16, like a young-looking guy. But a tremendous guy with a great work ethic and good ability. It’s been fun to watch him grow. He’s playing really well. Right now we have a chance to have a pretty good tandem with him and Sam out there. But to make those big plays today gave us a spark, and it was great to see. That’ll help him and help our football team moving forward. Q. You called a time-out on that clipping penalty. Did you get a valid explanation? KIRK FERENTZ: Yeah, you always get a valid explanation. Flash back to 1994 or ’95, we were playing in Kansas City and it got distracting, and it didn’t help our cause at all. So I try not to get distracted by things. But today to say it didn’t impact the game a little bit, the way things went, I think that would probably be naïve. The two things we’ve been pretty good at — even if we don’t have a real good team — we’re usually pretty good at ball security and takeaway margin typically we do a good job, ’09 being an exception there. Typically we’re in the upper third penalty-wise, and I think we’re somewhere in that neighborhood right now. To have six major penalties, that’s kind of uncharacteristic. Maybe we were overwhelmed talent-wise or maybe our guys are that sloppy. It didn’t feel that way from the sideline. It is what it is. But it impacted the game, and we weren’t good enough to overcome that. But I’ve had a problem with college football’s interpretation of cut blocking for probably a decade now, and I don’t see that getting any better. The good news is they’ll probably eliminate it from football next year, so we won’t have to worry about it. Q. If an offensive lineman has his helmet across the far side knee? KIRK FERENTZ: It’s an illegal block. Q. It is an illegal block? KIRK FERENTZ: That’s what you saw. I’m cosigning, I’m not saying it. Q. As far as Logan Jones’ blocking too long, too hard during the play — KIRK FERENTZ: You can’t be too aggressive out there on that field. You can’t do that, with a play that’s still going on. You all have seen Linderbaum do that a lot on the other side of the line of scrimmage. This happened to be where the defender was, and he’s finishing the play, and that’s something we really emphasize and teach. I’m a little perplexed by that one, and I don’t know when you’re supposed to know when to stop if your opponent is still going. It’s a little confusing. Q. If you look at the offense, the passing game especially, third quarter into the fourth quarter seemed to get some rhythm and some movement. Maybe for the first time this year it looked like it was really in concert for multiple possessions. Are you encouraged by that or do you feel like that’s something you guys can build on? KIRK FERENTZ: I am. For a couple things, reasons. I talked about Sam and Luke. I think we have a chance now to have a pretty good tight end combination. Looks like Nico is back pretty close to full speed, which is helpful to have a veteran player out there. Arland is doing some good things, and we’ll keep moving him along, and hopefully Brody is benefitting from every rep he gets, so I am — and then the other component, I thought up until that I guess it was last possession, next-to-last possession, we pass blocked better today, against a group that’s pretty good. They have some guys. To me that’s encouraging. We had a meltdown on that last series — I think we were two scores down, and I’ve been there before as a line coach. It’s not that much fun. So it’s not like that’s the first time I’ve seen that. We’ll grow through that and work through that. I saw a lot of things I thought that were better, but that’s not going to get it done for us unless we really keep pushing this thing forward and squeezing some things down. Q. The guys have talked about they see the improvement, it’s just not quickly enough. Would you agree with that, and how do you speed that up? Scroll to Continue KIRK FERENTZ: Yeah, when you come up short — but again, we knew what we were up against today, what we had to do. Really we couldn’t force — only one bad play I think on their part, the quarterback’s part. He had that one down to the right of our bench, which we were hoping maybe we could get a little bit more going there. But to his credit, he played a really good game. Yeah, I think we’re growing. I do think that. Campbell has been playing at a pretty good level. He, by the way, got tackled it looked like to me. You guys probably saw that one, right? Looked like he was in a hole and some outside hands snatched him down. But he played through that. I think we’re not — I’m not discouraged, but I am disappointed. Q. That Campbell play, why do you think that wasn’t a flag? KIRK FERENTZ: Why wasn’t it? They didn’t call it. It’s real easy. It was only at the point of attack, but other than that — and pretty obvious. It looked pretty flagrant. They obviously didn’t see it. I’m not questioning anybody’s integrity. I’m not going down that road. The guys are working hard — it’s hard; they’ve got a really hard job, really hard job. Q. Did it feel like you guys defensively couldn’t get any traction early in the game? They went I think 11 plays, 13 plays, 13 plays. You guys couldn’t get off the field. KIRK FERENTZ: We couldn’t get off the field, and if you can’t stop the run, it’s tough. It’s easy to call plays when you can run the ball, and not minimizing what they were doing, but again, the pressure they put on you from my vantage point, you see both those receivers last week running by DBs, so if you match up on them one-on-one, you’re living dangerously there with a guy who can throw it. It’s a lot of cat-and-mouse, and it’s tough, but they did a really good job, and it looked like they were executing very well, too. Q. How have you been seeing Diante and Keagan progress in terms of injury recoveries? KIRK FERENTZ: Not fast enough, obviously, but Diante has got a broken bone, so that’s what we’re dealing with. I think there’s a realistic chance he’ll be back after the bye week. The good news for him is he can run. He’ll be in great shape because that’s all he can do is run; he can’t catch. But hopefully we’ll get him back, and he was doing really well prior to his injury, so if we can get him back, you’re talking about a guy that’s been around here for a while, not just a first-year guy, and that would help. But we still don’t know what it’s going to look like once he gets cleared. Q. We’re still talking about seven points and 220 yards until the final possession. What can you do to get from that to a level that can give you a better chance to win? KIRK FERENTZ: It’s kind of what I just described. It’s everything kind of coming together. I think we’re getting better up front. At least that’s my assessment after today. I haven’t seen the film. I think we’ve got backs that are doing a pretty good job. I think we have two tight ends doing a pretty good job, and getting Nico back, all that stuff goes together. Not like I’m only just describing Michigan. Part of the secret to the run game is they’ve got guys outside that you really have to respect or it’s like electrocution. It happens fast, those kinds of things. You know, we’re a work in progress. I’m not discouraged by our guys. In fact, I’m encouraged by some of the things I’m seeing. But we’re going to have to keep moving and obviously have to get better. We’re not going to win a game scoring seven points. Q. How do you see dynamics change when you have a second tight end like Lachey really emerge as a capable person that defensive opponents have to keep an eye out for? KIRK FERENTZ: Every year it’s what you have and try to play towards those strengths. We’re talking about Michigan; they’ve got a couple really good tight ends. One wasn’t here, I don’t think, but they’ve got a couple, three that are really good, good receivers and ...

BEYA Pre-College Program To Host A Metaverse Symposium Ahead Of BEYA STEM Conference 2023 – BlackEngineer.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/beya-pre-college-program-to-host-a-metaverse-symposium-ahead-of-beya-stem-conference-2023-blackengineer-com/ Career Communications Group (CCG) has announced that the first ever BEYA Metaquake Symposium will take place in February 2023 at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC. Click here to register. The BEYA Pre-College program will anchor the symposium, giving young people an opportunity to learn about the metaverse and the tools used to create metaverses. In addition to the traditional programming, students will engage in a scholastic metaverse building competition which will culminate in a metaverse hackathon. The BEYA Pre-College Program has been an integral part of the Black Engineer of the Year Awards (BEYA) Conference since its inception. The program has partnered with organizations such as the Maryland Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) program, various school districts, and the Patriots Technology Training Center to present programs for middle school and high school students at the annual science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) conference held during Black History Month. CCG is actively re-engaging with past BEYA recipients to induct a new class into the Alumni Hall of Fame. The 2023 honorees represent the wealth of resources for the next generation to benchmark their pursuit of excellence on their personal journey to becoming everything they can be. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will provide a deeper understanding of the technologies that are the foundation of the metaverse which include gaming, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), cryptocurrency, blockchain, NFTs, Web 3.0, education, and beyond. Scheduled a week before the 2023 BEYA STEM Conference, the BEYA Metaquake Symposium creates a forum to explore technologies that are being harnessed by pioneers to create the metaverses. Early adopters are blazing a trail by stitching together some of the foundational technologies to create products and experiences that are propelling the creation of metaverses much like Career Communications Group’s STEM City and the BEYA STEM digital twin experience (DTX) platforms, which offer yearlong programming. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will explore the ecosystem by bringing together educators, researchers, business professionals, artists, gamers, and even novelists to explore and learn more about the metaverse. We want to start the conversation that answers the question most people ask when they hear about the metaverse: what is the metaverse and what does that mean for me? The symposium is for anyone who is curious about the metaverse and wants to engage in discussions designed to expand their knowledge, identify their points of entry in this emerging technology, and understand how their future may evolve. It’s for educators and students. Organizations that are exploring or engaging teams to develop and implement metaverse strategies. It’s for individuals who want to know how metaverse strategies can disrupt a carefully planned career trajectory. It’s for anyone who grapples with the jargon of the metaverse and wishes to gain knowledge that they can build on. The BEYA Metaquake Symposium will take place in the historic Omni Shoreham Hotel and Resort located in the quiet urban residential neighborhood, Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC. Its location offers quick access to the Reagan National Airport, which is about 8 miles away. Dulles National and Baltimore-Washington International Airports are respectively 28 and 33 miles away. Crypto Community Predicts Polygon (MATIC) To Rise Nearly 20% By October 31 – NewsBTC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/crypto-community-predicts-polygon-matic-to-rise-nearly-20-by-october-31-newsbtc/ Members of the crypto community have cast their ballots, so to speak, and now we’ll find out whether or not their forecast was accurate. The consensus of the cryptocurrency market predicts a 20% increase in MATIC prices before the month ends, as reported by CoinMarketCap’s price prediction metrics. This fairly optimistic forecast from the community suggests a high level of faith in both the token and the ecosystem. Good news has recently hit the Polygon community thanks to a tweet from the official Polygon Twitter account announcing a new collaboration with the trading platform Robinhood. Will Robinhood Team-Up Bring Good Results? The tweet suggests that Robinhood has teamed up with Polygon to offer a bitcoin wallet service. FThe Robinhood Wallet app is built with DeFi in mind. According to Polygon’s blog post, the Robinhood Wallet is a self-custody wallet, meaning that its owner has complete discretion over their cryptocurrency holdings. Robinhood has made other forays into the cryptocurrency market, so this isn’t their first venture. From its inception in 2018, it has been actively involved in the crypto industry, with Bitcoin and Ethereum being the first coins to be freely traded on the platform at no cost to traders. The change began in a select number of states. By 2021, the trade of crypto assets has expanded across the whole United States, with the exception of Hawaii and Nevada. The trading platform supports 11 cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. It also facilitates the trading of alternative cryptocurrencies, similar to Polygon’s MATIC token. With over 37,000 decentralized applications available on Polygon’s platform, it will undoubtedly aid Robinhood’s most ambitious cryptocurrency endeavor. But how did investors and traders of Polygon respond to the news? Rally In The Offing For Crypto? As of this writing, MATIC is trading at $$0.778741, down 0.1 percent in the last seven days, data from Coingecko show, Saturday. Currently, the token trades between the 50 Fib level ($0.6876) and the 61.80 Fib level ($0.7761). The present support line lies at $0.7252, which is essential because this will be the support line the bulls can rely on if things go south. If the price reaches the 61.80 Fib level again, we can expect a slight correction if there is sufficient buy demand. Investor confidence is high as Polygon presses forward with its Robinhood relationship, given the community projection of a near 20% price increase. Defense Leaders Look To Strengthen Rules-Based Order Department Of Defense
Defense Leaders Look To Strengthen Rules-Based Order Department Of Defense
Defense Leaders Look To Strengthen Rules-Based Order – Department Of Defense https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/defense-leaders-look-to-strengthen-rules-based-order-department-of-defense/ The defense leaders of the United States, Japan and Australia met today to strengthen the defense of the rules-based, international order that China and Russia are trying to dismantle. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III hosted Richard Marles, Australia’s deputy prime minister and defense minister, and Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada at U.S. Indo-Pacific Command headquarters in Hawaii to chart the way forward in the trilateral alliance. Austin said the meeting is a way for the nations to build on their already close partnership. “America is proud to count Australia and Japan among our very closest allies,” he said at the start of the meeting. “For decades, our three democracies have worked shoulder-to-shoulder as an anchor for stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific and around the globe.” The three countries share common values and common purposes, the secretary said, and are willing to defend an order that respects the rights of all nations to go about their business without bullying and intimidation. “But today, that vision is threatened by autocratic countries that peddle disinformation and defy international rules and rely on coercion and intimidation,” Austin said. “We are deeply concerned by China’s increasingly aggressive and bullying behavior in the Taiwan Strait and elsewhere in the region.” He also said the democracies have been drown closer together in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and its brutal war that threatens the very existence of the country.  Australia is halfway around the world from Ukraine, but the war is still felt there, and Australia has provided support and equipment to the embattled nation. “The global, rules-based order is being pressured in a way that we’ve not seen in many, many decades,” Marles said before the meeting. “We’re seeing that in Eastern Europe with the unprovoked aggression of Russia against Ukraine. And we are standing with Ukraine because we see that the principles which are engaged in that conflict go directly to Australia’s national interest because our interest lies in the upholding of the global rules-based order.” Marles said China is exerting that same pressure in Australia’s backyard and standing together is the way forward. “We are aligned strategically today as closely as we ever have been,” he noted. “But that strategic alignment is built upon relationships of deep affection between Australia and the United States, between Australia and Japan, and between Japan and the United States. We see the trilateral between our three countries as only growing deeper and stronger, and we look very much forward today to pursuing that agenda.” Hamada said Japan, too, believes the rules-based structure is under attack. “Today, the international community is faced with the severe security environments due to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, China’s unilateral change of status by force in the South and East China seas, and [the] remarkable development of North Korea’s nuclear and missile-related technologies among others,” he said through a translator. “The foundation of the international order has been undermined.” Austin said the trilateral alliance makes the region safer. “I look forward to strengthening our trilateral defense cooperation today, including reaching out together in the region and expanding our trilateral military activities and deepening our technology cooperation,” he said. “Working together strengthens our integrated deterrence, and it moves us all toward a safer and more prosperous region.”

Ian Downgraded To Post-Tropical Cyclone, Florida Officials Report Higher Death Toll | October 01, 2022 – Fox News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ian-downgraded-to-post-tropical-cyclone-florida-officials-report-higher-death-toll-october-01-2022-fox-news/ A weakened Ian continues traveling north through the Carolinas, where it is expected to dissipate over Virginia late Saturday. Fox News is updating with the latest news surrounding the storm, its impact, travel and emergency updates. incoming update… South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster said that while his state had some cleaning up and rebuilding to do following Hurricane Ian, there were no storm-related deaths. “But, we had no storm-related deaths. We had no hospitals damaged. All water systems were and are okay. We had only a few cellular problems. Most of the electricity has been restored, and I need to add, in record pace,” he said in a Saturday press conference with state officials. The governor thanked first responders, as well as the 52 million South Carolinians who listened to officials. He called it another good story for South Carolina. “And, we’re open for business,” McMaster said. The storm brought peak wind gusts at 92 miles per hour in Charleston Harbor and Ian brought down a significant amount of trees. Storm surge was significant along the Georgetown coast, where the hurricane made landfall. 5.63 inches of rain were record at Charleston Airport. Kim Stenson, the director of the State Emergency Management Division, said at least three counties had infrastructure damage, at least eight had residential, five had business damage and six electric cooperatives had “some level of damage.” He advised residents to check their homes for damage and mold. There were record reported outages on Friday, totaling 239,349. However, as of noon on Saturday, there were just over 35,000. Ian is the first hurricane to make landfall in South Carolina since Matthew in 2016.  The National Guard and the highway patrol were being demobilized. Posted by Julia Musto In a Saturday morning teleconference, officials from FEMA, the Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Coast Guard, the National Weather Service and the American Red Cross gave an update on recovery and relief efforts following the devastation from Hurricane Ian in Florida. Michael Musher, of the NWS, said there are nine river gauges, right now indicating record flooding across Florida. He also noted that there was river and coastal flooding in northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia. While recovery operations are ongoing, Musher said that the weather forecast looks “really good” over the next four to five days. Next, Brigadier General Brig. Gen. Daniel Hibner said the Army Corps was focused on infrastructure assessments and critical public facilities reported at the Lee County Water Distribution Center, in addition to establishing a generating stage base. “We’re also aware of the upper Kissimmee overflows and inundation that’s happening there. And we are responding. We’re sending a team of experts to do an assessment of what is happening there,” he added. Annie Bink, who is the Associate Administrator of the Office of Response and Recovery, told reporters that the priority continues to be search and rescue operations by land and by sea. “We’re actively collecting data on the ground as we speak from additional counties so we can continue to add those to a major disaster declaration to advance eligibility for assistance,” she said, noting that employees are at shelters providing and registering people for individual assistance. She pointed out that nearly 240 generators are staged on the ground in the affected areas and that at least 145 health care facilities had been impacted by the hurricane. U.S. Coast Guard Commander Rear Admiral Brendan McPherson said the Coast Guard had rescued more than 400 people since sunrise and that approximately 4,000 people have been rescued and assisted from entire unified command. While there were a few cases of people who were in urgent need of medical assistance, more people were “simply stranded.” The American Red Cross Senior Director of Integrated Field Communications, Anthony Tornetta, said the organization was providing meals to communities and had dozens of emergency response vehicles in Florida. “I can assure you that in the days and weeks and months ahead, the American Red Cross will continue to provide support for those impacted,” he said. Responding to a question about the number of dead, Bink said FEMA knew of 23 confirmed fatalities and reports of others. She said approximately 10,000 were sheltering right now. McPherson said there was not a good estimate regarding the number of people who remain stranded, adding that Sanibel would be “out of commission for some time.” The Atlantic hurricane season runs through Nov. 30. Although the Atlantic remains relatively quiet right now, Bink told Fox News Digital that the administration was “built for this.” “This is what we do. We have many levers at our disposal. We have a large cadre of reservists that are really the backbone of this agency that do the work in the field every day post-disaster. We also have a surge capacity force that was authorized by the secretary of DHS, which also frees up interagency volunteers to help support efforts,” she replied. “We have many tools at our disposal disposal to also include local hires which bring competency of around the areas that we’re serving. So, there’s many tools at our disposal and we’re ready. And, and this is what we do.” Posted by Julia Musto White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said President Biden had been briefed on recent developments by the Chief of Staff and his Homeland Security Advisor. “He was particularly focused on power and water restoration in FL, and new damage reports from SC. He asked for regular updates during the day as the storm progresses,” she said. Posted by Julia Musto The SBA Small Business Administration announced the addition of several Florida counties to the disaster declaration for Hurricane Ian. The move allows more Florida businesses and residents to be eligible to apply for the administration’s low-interest disaster loan program. The disaster declaration now covers Charlotte, Collier, DeSoto, Hardee, Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Orange, Osceola, Pinellas, Polk, Sarasota and Seminole counties in Florida, which are eligible for both Physical and Economic Injury Disaster Loans from the SBA. Small businesses and most private nonprofit organizations in the following adjacent counties are eligible to apply only for SBA Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDLs): Brevard, Broward, Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Indian River, Lake, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Okeechobee, Pasco, Sumter and Volusia in Florida. Businesses and private nonprofit organizations of any size may borrow up to $2 million to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery and equipment, inventory and other business assets. Disaster loans up to $200,000 are available to homeowners to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed real estate. Homeowners and renters are eligible for up to $40,000 to repair or replace disaster-damaged or destroyed personal property. Applicants may apply online using the Electronic Loan Application (ELA) via SBA’s secure website at https://disasterloanassistance.sba.gov/ela/s/ and should apply under SBA declaration # 17644. The deadline to return economic injury applications is June 29, 2023. Posted by Julia Musto As of 7a.m. EDT Saturday, the National Guard had more than 4,690 soldiers and airmen on state active duty in Florida. That total included members from Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Mississippi, New York, Washington and Montana. The Florida Guard has more than 1,300 ground assets actively engaged, including high-wheeled transports, fuel trucks, wreckers and rescue boats. There are also 25 helicopters currently available for recovery operations. In a release shared later, the Florida Guard said Joint Task Force Florida has 5,185 personnel activated and is executing missions in response to the storm. “The Task Force is currently supporting 152 missions, including executing search and rescue (SAR) missions throughout southwest and central Florida,” it said. “JTTF members have rescued and evacuated 1,076 civilians from flooded areas, to include transporting 78 civilians from a flooded elderly care facility, conducted two hoist rescues and a total of 178 rotary wing rescues.” A Defense official says the department continues to closely monitor the situation as Post-Tropical Storm Ian continues north. “FEMA remains the lead Federal agency on these responses, and the Department of Defense remains in close communication and coordination with FEMA as recovery continue to ramp up,” they noted. Posted by Julia Musto Speaking to reporters in Orlando alongside Congresswoman Val Demings, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Orange County Sheriff John Mina, FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell said that it was important for her to see the impacts that Hurricane Ian had across Florida. “We know that we’re going to have along road to recovery ahead of us,” she said, adding rebuilding planning efforts had already started. Orange County was recently declared one of the eligible areas for full FEMA reimbursement. Mayor Dyer said Orlando was “now down from 95,000 customers without power to somewhere around 7,000. Criswell stressed that residents should contact their insurance companies to see what would be eligible and then file a claim, noting that every individual would have a unique situation. Posted by Julia Musto A source in North Port Fire Rescue told Fox News that its first responders have a backlog of more than 500 addresses to get to, mostly due to flooding in the area. “We know you’re hurting. Our first responders and partners are working hard to get our community the ...

Passenger Was Stranded At The Airport After Airline Staff Forgot To Load Their Wheelchair Insider
Passenger Was Stranded At The Airport After Airline Staff Forgot To Load Their Wheelchair – Insider https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/passenger-was-stranded-at-the-airport-after-airline-staff-forgot-to-load-their-wheelchair-insider/ Xavi Santiago said they were stranded at a Florida airport after American Airlines staff forgot to load their wheelchair. Santiago said they waited in the baggage claim area for about five hours, convinced their chair was lost. “This is not a lost bag. This is my mobility. These are like my legs,” they told Insider. Loading Something is loading. A passenger who flew on American Airlines said they were stranded at the Airport after the airline employees forgot to load their wheelchair. “The entire time, I had no idea if my chair was going to show up. If it was going to be damaged, what was going to happen,” Xavi Santiago, 23, told Insider.”This is not a lost bag. This is my mobility. These are like my legs.” Santiago, who posted about their travel experience in a vial TikTok video said they along with their partner and friends were stranded at the Orlando Airport for almost five hours. The group, which was on vacation, was unable to leave because they were told that Santiago’s power wheelchair was not loaded onto their one-way flight from Los Angeles, California, to Orlando, Florida. A week before departure, the flight had changed to include a layover in Miami, Florida, Santiago said.  “When I booked my flight, I booked a one-way potentially because I am very aware of airlines and how they treat disabled people,”  Santiago said. “I know disabled people who have had their mobility aids broken, damaged, or lost by airlines.” In their layover in Miami, Santiago said they were unable to pre-board, which is a common accommodation for disabled passengers. “That’s always how it goes, I pre-board, I get transferred while the plane is still empty or while other disabled people or other people who are pre-boarding are still getting on,” Santiago said. “That didn’t happen. There was no wheelchair attendant or accessible attendant to get me into the transfer seat.” When Santiago finally made it on the plane, they said they had to squeeze past other passengers to get to the back of the plane to their seats. Santiago said that after an hour-long flight, they arrived in Orlando at 6 pm to find their wheelchair missing and were escorted to the waiting area where their partner was told the chair was not boarded on the connecting flight. “I was really freaking out because getting on the plane was such a mess. I was really worried that my chair still wasn’t here,” Santiago said. “No one was explaining anything to me.” Santiago told Insider they were angry by the airline staff only communicating with their partner. “I constantly have feelings of really not being seen as a person,” Santiago said. “I know it’s a common feeling for a lot of disabled people is they think that because you have physical disabilities, that it means that you’re any less capable or any less competent. And I sure as hell am not either of those things.” While a staff member offered Santiago a temporary wheelchair, they said the airline employee could not find one that could be taken outside of the airport. They would have to wait at the baggage claim area until their wheelchair arrived on the next flight at 9:30, Santiago said.  “I went down in one of the temporary wheelchairs and was trying to sort out getting just a temporary chair that I could use to get to the hotel and they couldn’t find anything,” Santiago said. “They couldn’t find even a manual wheelchair that was my size, that they could get to me.” Santiago, who said they paid more than $22,000 for their electric chair, said they feared they would never see it again and be stuck on vacation without mobility.  “I was convinced that it was not going to make it on the flight and that if I got it back, it was going to be damaged. Just with how many people told me that they hadn’t seen my chair,” Santiago said.  Passengers with disabilities repeatedly call out about harrowing experiences with air travel According to a report from the Department of Transportation published in July, US airlines saw a 108% increase in complaints from flyers with disabilities, from 76 in May 2019 to 158 in the same month this year. A passenger who also flew with American Airlines in July accused the airline crew of destroying his wheelchair and then severely damaging its replacement, costing him  $65,000. Writer and poet Allegra Keys, said her power wheelchair was severely damaged and left inoperable after she flew on Alaska Airlines in September.  US lawmaker Jim Langevin of Rhode Island was barred from his flight twice this year after airline staff thought his power wheelchair violated safety regulations. As US airlines damage thousands of wheelchairs every year, disability advocates and wheelchair users who fly often have urged a shift in the narrative regarding wheelchairs, Insider’s Bethany Dawson previously reported. Rather than saying wheelchairs are being broken, they should be viewed as a part of the body that is being destroyed.  Senator Tammy Duckworth, who also travels using a wheelchair, proposed a new policy last year that requires airlines to report wheelchair breaks and other among other incidents to the Civil Aviation Authority.  “Wheelchairs should be treated like a human limb because they’re my legs,” says Sen. Duckworth previously told  Insider. “When you break my wheelchair, or you lose my wheelchair, you’ve taken away my legs.” ‘Taking up space as a disabled person is the way’ After nearly five hours of discomfort waiting in the luggage area, Santiago said their chair finally arrived at the airport about an hour after midnight.  “I couldn’t leave the airport. It was really difficult for me to get moved and go to the bathroom, hard for me to transfer in and out because the chair isn’t my own. It’s not made to meet my needs,” Santiago said. “I was just uncomfortable and stuck there for several, and it was awful.” American Airlines did not respond to requests for comment. Santiago said American Airlines offered them $300 of in-flight credit in compensation but they refuse to fly American Airlines again.  “While there is a part of me that wants to use the bare minimum of what they’ll give me, I barely want to fly again,” Santiago said. “I really don’t think I’ll ever fly with American Airlines, and I sure as hell am never going to the Miami airport again.” Santiago said that all the positive feedback they received from their TikTok video calling out American Airlines made her feel seen and heard.  “The only way that people will listen to us sometimes is if we are abrasive, if we are angry, if we are pushing and that’s okay,” Santiago said. “It’s something that I have to remind myself of constantly, but taking up space as a disabled person is the way.” They added: “There is nothing wrong with taking up just as much space as able-bodied people and asking and not even asking, demanding for the support and access that we need in order to do the same things as able-bodied people, to travel, to live, to exist and to enjoy our lives. We are deserving of those things.”

Claire Robbie And Richie Hardcore’s Meet-Cute: ‘I Guess My Great Kissing Made Up For The Depressing Conversation’ – New Zealand Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/claire-robbie-and-richie-hardcores-meet-cute-i-guess-my-great-kissing-made-up-for-the-depressing-conversation-new-zealand-herald/ Richie Hardcore and Claire Robbie with sons Jack (right) and Rafael. Photo / Hannah Webb Former broadcaster Claire Robbie is a yoga and meditation teacher and founder of The School of Modern Meditation (wearesomm.co). She also established No Beers? Who Cares! to shift attitudes around alcohol. Richie Hardcore is a public speaker and educator on healthy masculinity, pornography, mental health, and domestic and sexual violence prevention. He recently launched the Rise Above Charitable Trust to work with those outside the mainstream system through education, mentoring and healthy lifestyle choices. The couple live in central Auckland with sons Jack, 8, and Rafael, 4 months. Claire says… I had just come back from living in the States and met Richie at a friend’s birthday party in 2015. Richie was there with his girlfriend at the time. For some reason we got talking about sobriety. He reminded me of the dudes in AA in Los Angeles and I just assumed he was an ex-alcoholic. He’s the complete opposite, actually. I didn’t really think anything of it. I’d never really been attracted to tattoos. I had all these assumptions, basically. That was our first meeting and then later I put a thing on Facebook to say I was going to stop drinking for a year. I was too socially and emotionally reliant on alcohol. I set up No Beers? Who Cares! for people who wanted to hang out with others who didn’t want to drink. He got in touch and was so caffeinated. I remember thinking “whoa, that guy’s intense”. Richie became one of our ambassadors. He’s never been a drinker and he’s incredibly educated about what alcohol does to society. He spoke at a few of our events, and I remember taking his photo and being a bit intrigued. His gold chains threw me, and I thought “that’s a lot of jewellery”. He’s a really amazing public speaker and is very chatty and open. I’ve always been attracted to a person when they’re doing the thing they love. He came to my yoga class and looked at my boobs quite a bit – he had that dropping eyeline. He wasn’t assertive with asking me out – there was a little bit of hesitation, “do you want me to ask you to go on a date?”. I said “yep”. We went on the worst date ever. It was so weird. He picked me up and then we went to Farro because he had to do some social media content on vegan hot cross buns, and I had to film him. Then we circumnavigated Coyle Park and I remember thinking “this is the most depressing conversation I’ve ever had”. There was really dark, heavy, intense energy and I remember getting in the car and thinking “nah, too much for me”. Then we didn’t see each other for a month. I went to Bali to run a retreat. Occasionally I would get a message at 10.30 at night, saying “hey, how are you doing?” I’m like, “I’m at home with my son because I’m a single mum”. It wasn’t the most seamless getting together. The next time we saw each other we went to a Yin yoga class together and I went back to his house, which was such a mess. Then we got some food and had a pash. That was that. Then he couldn’t get rid of me. It was a slow burn introducing him to Jack and we moved in together a couple of years later. Richie is so funny, hilarious! He is really intelligent, and I appreciate his dedication to things he loves, even if they irk me sometimes and I don’t really understand them. It’s wonderful to be with someone who’s passionate about life because I am too. We understand that we both like doing things that don’t involve each other. His honesty is refreshing – we have full disclosure between us. I like the way he takes care of himself at the gym, and I appreciate it’s important to him. His self-respect is really admirable. He is a vegetarian and I eat meat – and being with him has made me question some of my choices because of the way he sees himself and respects the world around him. I love how he’s been with Jack, especially after having Rafael. Claire Robbie and Richie Hardcore met in 2015. Photo / Supplied Richie says… When I first Claire at that party, I could sense she was my sort of person – for better or for worse. I could tell that she had a lot going on, energetically. It’s hard to explain. Sometime later Claire asked me to speak at a No Beers? Who Cares! event. As the child of an alcoholic, I’ve always been a rescuer and I was talking about this. Claire piped up from the back and said, “would you rescue me?” It was really funny, and everyone said “ooooooohhh”. At the start of 2017 I had quite bad depression and was recovering from a lot of stuff that had happened to me, so I imagine the conversation on our first date was pretty intense, because I’m quite forthright in how I think and how I feel. And I was messaging at night because I had really bad insomnia. I was thinking, “yo, what’s up with that interesting girl?” After the Yin yoga class, I guess my great kissing made up for the depressing conversation [laughs]. She was like “he can stick around” and we hung out from there. I hadn’t really been around kids – I’d been this weird bachelor. Jack’s name is tattooed on my leg now. I made a video for him to check it was okay if I asked his mum to marry me and to explain he’d be stuck with me. I knew Claire liked Cathedral Cove and liked a particular ring with rainbow-coloured sapphires at Zoe & Morgan. So, we went to Cathedral Cove and as I asked her to marry me a double rainbow appeared. It was exciting, but as we’re both divorced, we were both a bit nervous about the idea of marriage. I love Claire for a whole range of reasons – she’s passionate, very intelligent and has a deep empathy for the human condition. She’s curious and open to learning things and applying them to helping others. She’s funny when she’s not being sarcastic. She was already Jack’s mum but to see her go from being my hot girlfriend to being pregnant and having Rafael has been really profound. She’s really supportive but doesn’t take any sh*t though. – As told to Penny Lewis

Dish And Sling Subscribers Will Need Alternatives To Watch College Football On ESPN Today – Raleigh News & Observer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dish-and-sling-subscribers-will-need-alternatives-to-watch-college-football-on-espn-today-raleigh-news-observer/ Notre Dame’s Marist Liufau (8) stops North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye (10) after a 15-yard again in the first quarter on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. Robert Willett rwillett@newsobserver.com North Carolina football fans planning on watching Saturday’s game against Virginia Tech on Dish Network or Sling TV were unexpectedly hit with news that those two services no longer carry the ESPN family of networks. The contract expired Friday night and, with no new deal, that means viewers will have to seek alternatives to see the Tar Heels and Hokies’ 3:30 p.m. kickoff on ACC Network. Duke’s game against Virginia at 7:30 p.m., carried by Bally’s Sports South, will also be blacked out. But subscriptions to the new Bally Sports+ streaming service are available for $19.99 a month and the package includes a free seven-day trial. Wake Forest and Florida State at 3:30 and N.C. State’s showdown at Clemson at 7:30 p.m. are both games on ABC and will not be impacted. However, if both sides can’t reach a new agreement quickly, future broadcasts — including the start of the college basketball season next month — will be in jeopardy. ESPN and its umbrella, which includes ESPN2, ESPNU, ACC Network and SEC Network, is owned by the Walt Disney Company. Disney owns ABC too, but the expired contract only effects Disney and ESPN channels. The best way to watch a game broadcast by ESPN if you have Dish or Sling is to catch the action on streaming services like Hulu + Live TV or YouTube TV. Solana Price Plunges As Blockchain Suffers Outage Again Cryptonews
Solana Price Plunges As Blockchain Suffers Outage Again – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/solana-price-plunges-as-blockchain-suffers-outage-again-cryptonews/ Source: AdobeStock / JorgeEduardo Solana’s price has taken a hit amid another major outage that has grinded the network activity to a halt. Crypto pundit and host of NFT Alpha show, Nick Valdez first brought the development to public attention on Twitter after a series of speculative mentions. A few hours later, the official Solana Twitter handle confirmed the report in the early hours of Saturday. According to the handle, the network experienced an outage and transactions were no longer being processed. The Solana team assured the community that network developers were already up and about, looking to resolve the issue.  This incident marks the fourth time Solana is experiencing a major outage this year. The network is now renowned within the crypto community for its occasional blackouts, as several proponents have cited the pattern as a reason to steer clear of the chain. Following confirmation of the outage, Solana shared a document with instructions to validators on steps to take in order to assist in solving the issue. The network has been successfully restarted as of press time, and fully operational.  Despite the resolution, the network’s outage lasted for over 8 hours. Solana’s price has, in tandem with the majority of the markets, seen a dip within this timeframe. While it might be a reach to ascribe Solana’s current price situation to the recent outage, the asset has in the past undoubtedly suffered from a network blackout. Solana is currently trading at $32.98 as of press time, down 3.43% in the past 24 hours. Since its fall from the lofty position of $47.9 on August 13, the asset has been caught in a bearish pattern. The asset saw a free fall from August 13 to August 19 which brought it below the $40-mark. Solana has not revisited the zone at $40 since then. What Caused Solana’s Recent Outage? Limited information has surfaced on the root cause of the issue. Laine Stakewiz, a blockchain company running Solana nodes, recently shared insight on the matter. Several Solana validators stopped voting around 22:40 (UTC) on Friday. Operators received alerts of the issue and congregated on Discord to discuss it and find a solution. The network appeared to have been stuck as it was confirmed that new roots were not being produced. According to Laine Stakewiz, it was noticed that a validator shared an invalid block. The incident on its own oughtn’t result in a major issue, as it could be resolved by the network. Notwithstanding, the validator seemed to have been on two “instances,” with both producing an invalid block. The act led to the creation of a fork. The fork, in turn, resulted in an abstruse code path with validators stuck on it. Attempts to switch to the main Solana fork proved futile, leading to a halt in network activity. Upon discovering the core issue, developers noted that a cluster restart was required to resolve the outage.

Google Released A Second Chrome Security Update This Week – Ghacks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/google-released-a-second-chrome-security-update-this-week-ghacks/ Google published a new security update for the company’s Chrome web browser that addresses three security issues in the browser. The new update comes less than a week after the release of Chrome 106, which addressed a total of 20 security issues in Chrome. The new security update is available already. Chrome is updated automatically by default, but updates may happen days or even weeks after the release. It is better, often, to install the update manually to protect the browser against potential attacks targeting the security issues. To do so, load chrome://settings/help in the browser’s address bar or go to Menu Help About Google Chrome. Chrome displays the current version that is installed and runs a check for updates. The check will pick up the new security update and install it in the browser. Once installed Chrome Stable should display version 106.0.5249.91 and Chrome Extended Stable should display version 106.0.5249.91, which can be checked on the Help page. Google reveals that two of the reported security issues have a severity rating of high. High is the second-highest rating after critical. One security issue was detected internally, and that means that it is not revealed by the company to the public. [$7000][1366813] High CVE-2022-3370: Use after free in Custom Elements. Reported by Aviv A. on 2022-09-22 [$10000][1366399] High CVE-2022-3373: Out of bounds write in V8. Reported by Tibor Klajnscek on 2022-09-21 Google makes no mention of exploits in the wild, but there is always the chance that the company has not detected them yet or that attacks begin after the release of the security updates for Chrome. Chrome users may check the official announcements for Chrome Stable and Chrome Extended Stable, but they don’t provide any additional details. other than a link to the update log, which lists changes meticulously. Other Chromium-based browsers may post updates, as they may be affected by some of the reported security issues as well. Now You: do you have Chrome installed on your devices? Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks The Points Guy
Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks The Points Guy
Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Credit Card Review: Solid Sign-Up Bonus With Limited Perks – The Points Guy https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/marriott-bonvoy-bountiful-credit-card-review-solid-sign-up-bonus-with-limited-perks-the-points-guy/ Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card overview The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card is one of two brand-new Marriott cards that launched in September 2022. While it offers a lucrative sign-up bonus, the overall benefits fall short of what you’d might expect from a card that carries a $250 annual fee. Card rating*: * Card rating is based on the opinion of TPG’s editors and is not influenced by the card issuer. Marriott now has six cobranded cards available to new cardholders, with annual fees on those ranging from $0 to $650 per year. The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card from Chase launched on Sept. 22, 2022 along with its nearly-identical sibling, the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy American Express Card. The Bountiful card sits in the middle of the range of annual fees on Marriott credit cards, with an annual fee of $250. Sign up for our daily newsletter The card currently has a welcome offer of 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new card to make $4,000 in eligible purchases within the first three months from account opening. Beyond that, cardholders enjoy complimentary Marriott Gold status along with higher earning rates for hotel purchases and in some common spending categories. That said, the card is missing a feature that you may consider standard for a hotel credit card: a complimentary free night when you renew your card. This is often included with introductory cards that have annual fees less than $100, so does the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card offer enough value to offset that gap? Here’s a full review of the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card to help you decide if it’s a fit for your wallet. The information for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. Who is this card for? The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card could be a good option for those looking for automatic Marriott Bonvoy status but who aren’t willing to pay higher annual fees for premium or luxury credit cards that offer higher status levels. It may also be a good choice for people who want the consumer protections it offers when shopping or traveling — though these aren’t as robust as some higher-end cards. THE POINTS GUY Holders of the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful enjoy automatic Gold Elite status for as long as the card remains open, without needing to reach the normal qualification threshold (25 nights per year). Additionally, when you swipe the card, you may be eligible for reimbursement if your trip is delayed or an item you purchased is damaged, and the annual fee that unlocks these protections is lower than other premium cards. That said, if you’re looking to make the most of your points and miles strategy, you may have difficulty justifying the card — especially because of the lack of perks. Related: Which Marriott Bonvoy credit card is right for you? Remember that Chase has application restrictions that you should be aware of if you decide to apply. While this is a new card and we don’t have application data to confirm it, it’s a near certainty that this card will be subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule. If you’ve opened five or more credit cards in the past 24 months, and these can be seen on your credit report, then you will likely be denied when applying for this or any other credit card from Chase. If you’re interested in the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card but are ineligible due to 5/24, you may want to consider its nearly-identical sibling, the Amex Marriott Bonvoy Bevy card. Welcome offer: $1,050 in value The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card has a current offer of 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points for applicants who use the new card to make $4,000 in eligible purchases within the first three months from account opening. Based on TPG’s valuation of Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents each, the 125,000 points are worth $1,050. Remember that there are restrictions on new member credit card bonuses if you’ve had similar Marriott credit card products from American Express or Chase, or previous Starwood Preferred Guest cards from American Express. Be sure to carefully review the card’s offer details page to ensure you’re eligible. See also: The ultimate guide to credit card application restrictions Main benefits and perks The Bonvoy Bountiful card offers some perks that could make it worthwhile for some travelers: Marriott Gold Elite status: Primary cardholders (authorized users aren’t included) receive automatic Marriott Gold status as long as the account is open. TPG values Marriott’s Gold status at $800 per year. This is Marriott Bonvoy’s mid-tier level, and the most valuable benefits of Gold status are upgrades to enhanced rooms (when available) and a 25% points bonus on hotel spending. While many hotel credit cards offer a way to spend your way toward higher status levels, that’s noticeably absent on the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful card. Annual free night award via spending: When you spend at least $15,000 on eligible purchases during your cardmember year (not calendar year), you’ll earn a free night certificate that can cover a one-night stay costing up to 50,000 points. This is more valuable than those offered on lower-tier Marriott cards (which are capped at 35,000 points). However, those are available without a spending requirement, whereas the Bountiful requires $15,000 in spending per year. That said, there are some terrific uses of the 50,000-point free night certificate — though bear in mind that Marriott’s dynamic pricing may affect these properties, especially on high-demand dates. Elite night credits: When you hold the Bountiful card, you’ll automatically receive 15 elite qualifying night credits per year. This benefit can be stacked with the nights you earn with a Marriott small-business card, which will put you 60% of the way to Platinum Elite status. However, this only applies to business cards. If you have another personal Marriott card from either Chase or American Express, you’re limited to just 15 nights. Bonus points on each stay: Cardholders receive 1,000 bonus points on each eligible stay at hotels and resorts participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program. This is equivalent to an extra $8.40 worth of points based on TPG’s valuations. Travel protections: This card offers trip delay insurance for trips delayed by more than 12 hours due to a covered reason when you pay for at least part of your trip with the Bountiful card (which includes paying the taxes and fees on your flight award redemption). You’ll also enjoy baggage delay protection — which reimburses up to $100 per day for essentials while waiting for your luggage — and lost luggage reimbursement of up to $3,000 per covered person per covered trip. You’ll also receive secondary car rental loss and damage insurance, roadside dispatch services (pay per use), travel accident insurance and travel emergency assistance services, which can connect you to emergency service providers during a time of need. Note that there may be charges for these services when provided by third parties. Shopping protections: Purchases made with the card can get 120 days of purchase protection (up to $500 per claim and up to $50,000 per account) for theft, damage or loss of new items and up to one year of extended warranty coverage on warranties of three years or less on covered purchases worldwide (up to $10,000 per claim and up to $50,000 per account). Related: Your guide to Chase’s trip insurance coverage All that said, it’s worth mentioning what’s absent in the perks and benefits. In short, the card is missing a variety of things that are frequently found on cards with the same (or even lower) annual fees. This includes: A free night award given automatically on the card’s account anniversary each year. Reimbursement for the application fee for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck. Statement credits for ancillary fees or other purchases. Access to Priority Pass lounges. While unlimited Priority Pass access is usually reserved for cards with higher fees — like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express® Card and Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card — even the Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card allows cardholders to enter a participating lounge 10 times per year for a lower annual fee ($0 introductory fee the first year, then $95; see rates and fees). Note that enrollment is required in advance is required for some of these benefits. Le Meridien Bora Bora. MARRIOTT How to earn points The Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful Card has similar earning rates to other Marriott credit cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card and Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card. However, there are some notable differences. For starters, Bountiful cardholders can earn 6 Marriott Bonvoy points per dollar on purchases at hotels participating in the Marriott Bonvoy program, which matches most other cobranded cards. Then, you’ll earn 4 points per dollar at restaurants worldwide and U.S. supermarkets (on the first $15,000 per year in combined purchases, then 1 point per dollar after reaching this limit). All other purchases will earn 2 points per dollar. Related: Which credit card should you use for Marriott stays? As noted previously, TPG’s valuations peg Marriott Bonvoy points at 0.84 cents apiece. This translates into a 5.04% return at Marriott properties, a 3.36% return for the first $15,000 spent at restaurants and supermarkets and a 1.68% return for all other purchases. This is decent for loyal Marriott travelers who want to boost their balances of Bonvoy points, but it’s worth noting that other cards can provide a better option for earning rewards on non-bonus spending categories. Cloudflare Makes Hardware Security Keys Accessible For Millions Of Customers Tech Business News
Cloudflare Makes Hardware Security Keys Accessible For Millions Of Customers – Tech Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cloudflare-makes-hardware-security-keys-accessible-for-millions-of-customers-tech-business-news/ Cloudflare Democratizes Spoof-Proof Security; Makes Hardware Security Keys More Accessible Than Ever for Millions of Customers Because it’s Good for the Internet Cloudflare has introduced a new service to make physical security keys the most economical and accessible method for safeguarding their employees and businesses. As of 29th September, hardware security keys are an additional layer of protection and a method of MFA that has been proven to be phishing resistant. Customers will be able to purchase Yubico’s security keys, the most secure hardware security keys and most resistant phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA), at an exclusive “good for the internet” price. A Zero Trust security model means that no one is trusted, by default, regardless if they’re inside or outside of a corporate network. This means verification is required from everyone trying to gain access to resources on that organization’s network, including location, familiar devices, and passwords. As a Cloudflare customer, you can now purchase Yubico’s Security Key Series at a much lower price—as little as $10—through your Cloudflare dashboard. Larger corporations using Cloudflare and purchasing a multi-year YubiEnterprise Subscription for YubiKeys will receive a 50% discount on their first year of a 3+ year subscription. Through this partnership, organisations of all sizes will be able to acquire, activate, and verify using security keys with ease and convenience. Cloudflare prevented a breach from a SMS phishing attack that targeted more than 130 companies in July by employing Cloudflare Zero Trust paired with YubiKeys. While physical security keys help to prevent attacks, they work in conjunction with DNS filtering, browser isolation, cloud email security, and other security measures to prevent attacks, an assailant would need to compromise every signal. Dane Knecht, SVP, Emerging Technology and Incubation at Cloudflare says we are always looking for ways to provide the highest possible security to its customers and the Internet at large. “With phishing attacks becoming more prevalent, we want to help democratize additional security measures to further enhance the Cloudflare Zero Trust experience.” “We experienced this firsthand and wanted to make using hardware security keys simple for any organisation,” says Knecht According to Knecht working with Yubico is just another way Cloudflare is trying to make it as seamless as possible to arm our customers with the best Zero Trust security strategy. “Being a Cloudflare Zero Trust customer introduces an easy, fast and affordable way to implement security keys in your organization, and all part of our greater mission to help build a better Internet.” he said With the adoption of Yubico, Cloudflare is ensuring physical security keys are: Economical: Rolling out security keys can be difficult for companies with smaller security teams, or those that have just begun using two-factor authentication. By offering security keys at the most affordable rate, this offer makes the keys less of a financial burden on small companies. Simple to use: Setting up security keys is easy for participating Cloudflare customers. For Administrators, Cloudflare Zero Trust makes it easy to use your security keys with any Identity Provider (IdP) and integrates both the keys and IdP into a comprehensive Zero Trust solution. For employees, a simple guided prompt makes the action of touching a security key for authentication seamless. Security keys work across all devices, operating systems, and areas within an organization. Accessible: Now Cloudflare customers can order Security Key Series, supporting FIDO-based authentication, directly through their dashboard. The YubiKey 5 Series, available through YubiEnterprise Subscription, supports multiple authentication protocols, from legacy applications to modern FIDO-based apps and services. The exclusive “good for the Internet” pricing, helps to introduce the value and functionality of hardware keys to Cloudflare customers. Stina Ehrenvard, CEO and co-founder, Yubico says Yubico pioneered the modern security key, the YubiKey, and continues to set the industry standard, protecting enterprise customers and consumers from security threats. “Today’s attacks require modern MFA. Working with Cloudflare will help get more Security Keys and YubiKeys into the hands of their customers, to deliver on the combination of phishing-resistant MFA and provide peace of mind.” says Ehrenvard The promotion will be available to Cloudflare customers until December 31, 2022. Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary Chicago Tribune
Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary Chicago Tribune
Guest Column: State Must Address Health Care Disparities In Cities Like Gary – Chicago Tribune https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/guest-column-state-must-address-health-care-disparities-in-cities-like-gary-chicago-tribune/ In response to a recent RoundTable discussion with legislators and local providers on the health crisis in Gary hosted by Senator Eddie Melton (D-Gary), State Rep. Vernon G. Smith (D-Gary) comments on the community’s health desert and urges the state to address the harmful systemic disparities. Recently, I attended a RoundTable hosted by Senate Assistant Democratic Leader Eddie Melton, D-Gary, with healthcare providers and stakeholders of Lake County to discuss the status of healthcare in Gary. This was the first time in the recent past that Gary providers had ever convened to discuss the health status of our community. The response from the healthcare providers attending, as well as state legislators like Rep. Ragen Hatcher, D-Gary, was compelling and I also want to thank them for showing their support for Gary. This initiative to bring local leaders, lawmakers and providers together to craft a plan forward in advancing the health of Gary is greatly needed. By shedding light on the discrepancies of healthcare within the community, Melton is setting the stage for a future in which equitable health is accessible to all. Our collective actions remind me of a certain passage in the Book of Habakkuk: in order to create a future where all can have true quality of life, we as lawmakers and leaders must “write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it” (Habakkuk 2:2). We started the conversation but there is plenty of work to be done. Being Black in America is bad for your health. Being a Hoosier living in Gary is bad for your health. These statements have only become more true as the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the long-standing health care inequalities facing people of color from disproportionately underserved communities. A multitude of factors, including access to pharmacies, food deserts, mental health care and even public transportation can all determine whether someone lives or dies, or whether someone merely survives or thrives. Gary has all of these problems, including a drastic health desert. All of these issues can and should be addressed with cultural competence training, greater empathy and respect for those of different colors and creeds. However, none of that can be done or have meaningful impact until state leaders put resources and policy proposals behind addressing these inequities. In Gary, there are only five practicing pediatricians. Let me make that clear — in a city of over 75,000 people, there are only FIVE pediatricians. This is a deeply disturbing reality for all families and children who must live it. On the other hand, the city of Noblesville (with a comparable population size to Gary), has about 125 pediatricians. A discrepancy this large and deadly must be addressed as soon as possible, especially considering that Indiana’s infant mortality rate is 20 percent higher than the national average. It’s a well-known fact that the better health care a child receives early in life, the healthier their outcomes are as an adult. Furthermore, Indiana’s African American population already faces disproportionate rates of diabetes, hypertension and a decreased life expectancy. The sooner we can get our children on the path of a healthy life, the better. Post Tribune Twice-weekly News updates from Northwest Indiana delivered every Monday and Wednesday A lack of pediatricians is not the only problem facing our community. There are elderly and low-income residents that need to be cared for by increasing Medicare and Medicaid funding. There is a great need for more investment in crisis mental health mobile units. There are high rates of pollution further exacerbating health problems like asthma, gaps in accessing safe and reliable transportation that would allow patients to travel for care, and even insufficient pharmacies. In fact, I have heard rumor of a local pharmacy having more alcohol available than medication. That is sad and insulting to all. Each of these concerns are tied to the next systematically, serving as barriers that prevent people of color, the elderly and those from low-income backgrounds in Gary from living dignified and healthy lives. Systematic disparities require systematic changes, including government funding, adequate health funding, local partnerships, effective policies and increased research. While these issues may seem like exaggerated statements, data-driven research has proven them true time and time again. The healthcare situation within Gary is complex and sobering, but hope is not all lost. Just as Senator Melton stated, the RoundTable discussion was a great start in beginning to address and understand the health challenges our community is facing. Throughout my 32 years at the legislature, I have promoted a platform of healthcare, employment, education and addressing all other inequities Hoosiers face. I will continue to work tirelessly in promoting our health needs and concerns to the Indiana General Assembly. Our state has a surplus of over $6.1 billion dollars; there is no reason why we cannot use even just a portion of that money to invest in the plethora of healthcare needs that the community of Gary is facing. In closing, I want to state that, regardless of how much money you have or what your social status is, if you don’t have health, you don’t have quality of life. Physicians — I am asking you to stop being afraid of our community. Legislators — I am asking you to stop ignoring the needs of our people. Take heed of Senator Melton’s actions and the overwhelming response of providers and join us in working to put an end to these discrepancies in medical care. Equality in health care is equality in life. Vernon G. Smith is a Indiana State Representative for parts of Gary and Merrillville.

Navy Vs. Air Force Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel, Kickoff Time, Football Game Odds, Prediction – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/navy-vs-air-force-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-kickoff-time-football-game-odds-prediction-cbs-sports/ The race for the 51st Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy begins Saturday when Navy faces Air Force. The annual award given to the team with the best record of the three service academies (including Army) is one of the great highlights and traditions in college football, and after a 2021 season where the three schools split the series for the fifth time, the excitement for an outright winner is higher than ever.  Army “retained” the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy as a result of the split, but that retention was met with some disappointment because it was Navy’s upset win in the Army vs. Navy Game at the end of the season that led to all three schools having a 1-1 record in the series. Navy is looking to bring that same upset-friendly approach to Saturday’s showdown in Colorado Springs, Colorado, as Air Force has won three of the last four meetings against the Midshipmen and enters the game as a heavy favorite.  While some rivalry games include the phrase “throw out the record books,” it is actually those books themselves that speak to the pride in this particular matchup in the history of the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy. Air Force (20) and Navy (16) have combined for 36 of the 45 outright wins in the history of the series, and in every season from 1997 to 2016, it was the winner of this game that would go on to win the trophy. So not only is this the first edition of the coveted rivalry series, but potentially the most impactful in determining the winner.   How to watch Navy vs. Air Force live Date: Saturday, Oct. 1 | Time: Noon ET Location: Falcon Stadium — Colorado Springs, Colorado TV: CBS | Live stream: CBSSports.com, CBS Sports App (Free) Navy vs. Air Force: Need to know Air Force offense is dominant on the ground: Air Force led the nation in rushing in 2020 and 2021, so it’s not a huge surprise to see the Falcons leading the nation again here through four weeks of the season. But even for this program, the 2022 season has gotten off to a special start. The Falcons are currently averaging a whopping 412.3 rushing yards per game, a mark that’s more than 80 yards per game higher than the rushing title averages of the last two seasons. The 2022 average is likely to regress a little with more games added to the season totals, but the fact that Air Force is leading the way should be no surprise. This is an offense that has had one really off day in a loss against Wyoming, but otherwise has been so efficient that there have been two games where the Falcons have not punted.   Navy run defense a highlight in the 1-2 start: The Midshipmen got off to an 0-2 start but rallied to get their first win of the year in a 23-20 double-overtime victory at ECU. But what’s been strong all season, even through the losses to Delaware and Memphis, has been the run defense. Navy currently ranks fifth nationally, allowing just 69 yards per game and 2.33 yards per attempt on the ground, and much like Air Force’s rushing offense that kind of performance is not the expectation in this matchup of strength-on-strength in a rivalry game. Navy has a slight advantage against its service academy rivals because of the familiarity, but this year the Midshipmen have been strong against the run, and that gives them their best chance to win.  A rubber match in the coaching rivalry: Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo and Air Force coach Troy Calhoun are two of the 25 winningest active coaches in college football and currently rank in the top six on the active list of coaches who have won all of their games at one school. Calhoun has won three of the last four, but the series between the two coaches is tied 7-7 with Saturday’s game breaking the tie.  Navy vs. Air Force prediction, pick Odds via Caesars Sportsbook Since 2005, the under in games between service academies is 41-9-1. Two run-heavy teams playing against each other means the clock does not stop often and the number of possessions is limited, plus both defenses are used to playing against option attacks, so the big plays aren’t going to hit as often. The totals for these games have been dropping since the trend started in 2005; it’s much tougher to see unders hit in the 30s than the 40s or low 50s, but we ride with the trend. Prediction: Under 38 Which college football picks can you make with confidence in Week 5, and which top-10 favorite will go down hard? Visit SportsLine to see which teams will win and cover the spread — all from a proven computer model that has returned more than $3,100 in profit over the past six-plus seasons — and find out.

Tim Cook On Why Apple Avoids The Term ‘metaverse,’ Unlike Facebook – Business Insider https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/tim-cook-on-why-apple-avoids-the-term-metaverse-unlike-facebook-business-insider/ Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed AR, VR, and more in a new interview with Dutch media outlet Bright. He said Apple avoids using the term “metaverse” because the average person doesn’t know what it is.  The tech giant’s approach is a stark contrast to Mark Zuckerberg’s obsession with the metaverse.  Loading Something is loading. Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed in an exclusive interview with Dutch media outlet Bright that the tech giant’s hesitancy toward joining the metaverse hype is intentional. “I always think it’s important that people understand what something is. And I’m really not sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is,” Cook told the outlet.  “Metaverse” is a term derived from science-fiction and refers to a hypothetical version of a three-dimensional internet accessed via immersive technologies rather than 2D screens. The word “metaverse” was only mentioned once on Apple earnings calls so far this year, compared to 36 mentions on Meta earnings calls. Despite the buzz word’s explosive usage across the industry, executives are divided on whether the metaverse represents a real product — like virtual reality — or if it’s just a concept for a virtual world that may never actually exist. However, Mark Zuckerberg told staff in July that Meta is in “deep, philosophical competition” with Apple to build the metaverse. Following Facebook’s name change and announcement last fall that it would invest $10 billion into building the so-called metaverse, the iPhone maker stood out from the wider tech industry in its apparent refusal to join Mark Zuckerberg’s latest obsession.  Instead, Apple has focused its emerging tech investment specifically on Augmented Reality.  When an analyst asked Cook this January about Apple’s role in the metaverse space, he responded that Apple is “always exploring new and emerging technologies” and pointed to the company’s 14,000 AR kit apps in the App Store.  “I think AR is a profound technology that will affect everything,” Cook told Bright in the interview published Friday, adding that virtual reality is not a way to “live your whole life.” “It’s something you can really immerse yourself in. And that can be used in a good way,” he said. “VR is for regular periods, but not a way to communicate well. So I’m not against it, but that’s how I look at it.”

Uniswap To Raise $100 Million In New Funding Round – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uniswap-to-raise-100-million-in-new-funding-round-cryptonews/ Image credit: Uniswap Uniswap Labs – the firm behind one of the world’s largest decentralized exchanges, Uniswap – is looking to raise a massive $100M fund in its latest funding round. This round follows Uniswap’s previous Series A funding in 2020. American online newspaper TechCrunch uncovered the development in a report Friday. According to the report, TechCrunch received intel from four reliable sources on the Uniswap deal which is currently in its early stages. The sources have chosen to remain anonymous. Uniswap will see fundings from several entities including a Singaporean social wealth fund, and California-based investment giant Polychain. The fund will welcome investments to the tune of $100 million to $200 million at a $1 billion valuation for Uniswap.  The sources indicated that the fund is still in its early stages, as previously mentioned, and as a consequence, the terms surrounding it are likely to see a change as negotiations progress. Neither Uniswap nor Polychain has divulged any relevant information regarding the report. Should the funding round materialize, it would serve as Uniswap’s second funding series in the space of two years. The firm concluded its Series A funding in August of 2020. The funding round which raised $11M was led by venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). Uniswap’s Expansion Intentions Uniswap is regarded as the world’s largest decentralized exchange, and the fourth-largest exchange in the world. Since its launch in 2018 by computer engineer Hayden Adams, Uniswap has seen a massive growth in adoption over the years. According to data from DeFi TVL aggregator, DeFiLlama, the decentralized exchange contributes a 64% share to the accumulated volume of all decentralized exchanges in the crypto space. In an attempt to upgrade its features so as to meet the ever-changing needs of the crypto community, Uniswap has taken to releasing several updated versions of its platform. The platform launched Uniswap v2 in May of 2020, and Uniswap v3 barely a year later, in March of 2021. As revealed by Uniswap Labs through a tweet, the platform hit the $1 trillion volume milestone in May of 2022 – an interesting feat to achieve in less than half a decade. Most of Uniswap’s trade volume – about 80% – was seen last year as the crypto scene saw a massive interest rate fueled by the bull market. Despite its meteoric growth, the platform still looks to expand, with this ongoing funding round serving as testament to that interest. Furthermore, Uniswap recently revealed that it plans to launch new products, as disclosed by COO Mary-Catherine Lader at the Messari Summit of 2022.

U.S. FAA Upgrading Malaysia’s Air Safety Rating – Source – Reuters.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-faa-upgrading-malaysias-air-safety-rating-source-reuters-com/ WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is upgrading Malaysia’s air safety rating nearly three years after it took action to restrict the country’s airlines from adding new flights to the United States, a person briefed on the matter said on Saturday. In November 2019, the FAA lowered Malaysia from Category 1 to Category 2, meaning Malaysian airlines were restricted to current levels of any existing U.S. service and subject to additional inspections at U.S. airports. The Category 1 rating means Malaysia meets international air safety standards. The FAA said 90% of countries rated achieved Category 1. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The Associated Press quoted Malaysian Transport Minister Wee Ka Siong as saying the upgrade would will bolster tourism in the country. “With the return to Category 1, our airlines can now mount new flights to the U.S. and have code sharing with American carriers,” the AP quoted Wee as saying. “This is good news after the COVID-19 pandemic.” On Monday, the FAA said it would work with countries when it sees early indications that civil aviation authorities are not meeting safety standards. The FAA previously would offer assistance only after the country had been downgraded. Now the agency will be able to work with a country to address developing safety risks before downgrading it. The FAA said if it notifies a country of a safety concern it will limit direct service and code sharing by foreign operators to current levels as it reviews whether to issue a downgrade. In May 2021, the FAA downgraded Mexico’s aviation safety rating to Category 2, an action barring Mexican carriers from adding new U.S. flights and limits the ability of airlines to carry out marketing agreements with one another. Fudan University Focuses On Management Of Startups SHINE
Fudan University Focuses On Management Of Startups – SHINE https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/fudan-university-focuses-on-management-of-startups-shine/ There is obviously a rich entrepreneurial culture in China as Shanghai Stock Exchange’s STAR Market had hosted 437 listed science and technology innovative companies by the end of July, with an overall market value exceeding 5 trillion yuan (US$702 billion). But how can these startups grow and develop sustainably? Fudan University School of Management launched a new program on Friday to train professionals in the management of startups. According to the school, the program aims to cultivate entrepreneurs and executives in management knowledge and practical skills, as well as the characteristics of startups featuring scientific and technological innovation. The first class of 64 students were selected from its management students. Aged 37 on average, they come from industries ranging from biomedicine and new information technology to new materials and environment protection. Among them, 24 percent are business starters while 63 percent are professional managers. After finishing core courses for master’s in business administration, they will learn top-level planning in science and technology innovative enterprises and new trends in technology development and application, and explore new modes for decision making and management in such companies, according to the school. They will be tutored by prestigious professors of various disciplines from the university, including management, finance, life science and microelectronics, as well as entrepreneurs from famous scientific and technology innovation companies, such as Foresight Robotics and iFLYTEK. “Science and technology innovation is the driving force for human progress and national development,” said Jin Li, president of Fudan, at the launch ceremony of the program. “Scientific and technological innovation need to be supported by management and young talent. “Take Fudan for example, we are strong in innovation in cutting-edge and high-end technologies, but to transfer our latest innovation achievements into products that can be accepted by consumers, we need a batch of outstanding talent in management. “Fudan’s School of Management is a pioneer in research on management of scientific and technological innovation. I’m look forward to it making fruitful achievements in this program.” Lu Xiongwen, dean of the management school, pointed out the development paths of current science and technology innovative enterprises are totally different from those of traditional trans-national enterprises. “New management forms and logic need to be developed to help such companies to grow,” he told students. “I hope most of you will join innovative companies as leaders.”

Cheers & Jeers: Giving Generously; Theft Hurts The Columbian
Cheers & Jeers: Giving Generously; Theft Hurts – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/cheers-theft-hurts-the-columbian/ The Columbian Published: October 1, 2022, 6:03am Cheers: To Give More 24! The annual fundraising effort that benefits local nonprofits raised $3.6 million last week, exceeding the event’s goal and providing funding for 216 organizations. More than 11,000 donations were made at an average of $174, and matching funds brought in another $1.5 million. “We’re amazed once again by the generosity of the community,” said Maury Harris of the Community Foundation for Southwest Washington, an umbrella organization for local nonprofits. “There’s a lot of people out here in Southwest Washington who really care about the community.” Leading recipients ranged from Free Clinic of Southwest Washington to a Catholic school to homeless services. While plaudits are warranted for organizations that help those in need throughout our community, the loudest cheers go to all who donated and worked to support Give More 24! Jeers: To shoplifting. One example of rising crime rates can be found in incidents of retail theft, as detailed in a recent Columbian article. The Clark County Sheriff’s Office says reports of shoplifting in the year ending Aug. 31 had nearly doubled compared with three years earlier. And much retail theft goes unreported — or initially unnoticed by proprietors. For small retail outlets, theft is an existential threat. As one store owner says, “It will destroy me, if you shoplift.” State Attorney General Bob Ferguson has created an Organized Retail Crime Theft Task Force to help address the issue. For proprietors, action cannot come soon enough. Cheers: To sidewalk construction. Work is scheduled to begin Monday on constructing and repairing sidewalks along Northeast Hazel Dell Avenue, between 99th Street and 117th Street. The work is expected to continue into 2023 on a stretch of road that, according to Clark County officials, sees up to 800 vehicles an hour. Improvements are much needed, with students from nearby Sacajawea Elementary often walking on the shoulder of the road. Ideally, the work would have been completed during the summer, when school is not in session, but there’s never a bad time to bolster safety along roadsides. Jeers: To a dwindling orca population. The Center for Whale Research says the southern resident orca population has declined to 73. Observers say three whales died in the past year, while calves were born in February and April. For the L Pod group, a census taken this summer identified 32 whales — the smallest number since counts began in 1976. Researchers say the orcas that roam the coasts of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia have struggled because of decreasing numbers of salmon — their primary food source — and because of increased pollution and noise in their home waters. Cheers: To remarkable detective work. The Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office has announced that it identified remains found in January 2002 in Ridgefield. Using modern DNA technology and genealogy databases, investigators were able to identify James Orin Johnson, who was 32 when he went missing. Local officials submitted a DNA sample from the remains to a lab in Virginia, which then linked those remains to two sisters born in the mid-1800s in Oregon. That started a path that eventually led to one of Johnson’s sons. Clark County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Martha Burt said: “This great work by our team helped to provide a family with answers they had been waiting 20 years to receive.” Johnson’s son Jacob said: “It’s a heartwarming feeling to know that that kind of effort goes into helping families in that way.”

Meet The People Collecting Airplane Barf Bags The Washington Post
Meet The People Collecting Airplane Barf Bags The Washington Post
Meet The People Collecting Airplane Barf Bags – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/meet-the-people-collecting-airplane-barf-bags-the-washington-post/ Steve Silberberg was flying from Boston to San Francisco as a college student in 1982 when he took note of the small bag in front of him. I bet no one collects these, he thought. So he swiped the bag — United, light blue, instructions helpfully written on the surface — and put it on his door. Friends started offering bags from their own travels. Thus, the collection that became the Air Sickness Bag Virtual Museum, now numbering more than 3,200 specimens, was born. “One can tell a lot about an airline’s image from their Air Sickness Bags,” Silberberg, 61, writes on one of the two sites dedicated to his hobby. “Some barf bags are no more than a baggie with a twist tie, while other sickbags could win international design competitions. Are they art? I think so.” He’s not the only one. Contrary to his thought four decades ago, other collectors around the world share his offbeat enthusiasm, posting their own prized possessions online, trading for new finds and even connecting in person at airline memorabilia events during pre-pandemic times. But the global community of “baggists,” as some call themselves, is small and not growing — in part due to an aging cohort and because fans say bags just aren’t that great anymore. Instead of the branded or whimsically designed ones from the past, many airlines are providing plain white options. “I think it’s shrinking a bit because of a lack of new bags,” said Bruce Kelly, 79, a retired corrections worker in Anchorage whose maintains Kelly’s World of Airsickness Bags online. His collection tops 7,300, which many of the world’s top enthusiasts have dropped by to see. Kelly said he believes there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 baggists at one point. He’s not sure how many are active now. Paul Mundy, a Germany-based communications specialist who works in international relations, has nearly 2,500 bags in a collection that started by necessity. (“Have you flown with the toddler?” he asked a reporter with a 2-year-old. “Try it. And you will become interested in airsickness bags, too.”) But he only grabs a new bag on the rare occasions that he flies and hasn’t updated his site, Bagophily.com, for several years. “The problem is that bag collecting is a sedentary activity,” said Mundy, 64. “You’re either sitting on a plane, which is bad for your varicose veins, or you are sitting in front of a computer thinking up stupid jokes to write about bags and that is sedentary as well.” SFO Museum, part of San Francisco International Airport, has more than 600 bags from its archives available to peruse online. Graphic designer Henry Steiner donated a 368-bag collection, gathered during business trips. In an email, museum registrar Tomohiko Aono said airsickness bags were a “by-product of the limitations of aircraft” in the earlier days of aviation, when planes had to fly at altitudes below 10,000 feet and were more likely to encounter bad weather and turbulence — all contributors to motion sickness. Even after airlines could better avoid turbulence, Aono wrote, the bags remained on board and sometimes served as a scorecard for card games or containers to send film to get developed. Sometimes, they let an airline show a little flair. “As for why they’re popular with collectors, the sky is the limit on possible reasons—as those reasons tend to be very personal,” wrote Megan Callan, assistant director for museum affairs, in an email. “But some might be: they’re small and relatively easy to maintain; they’re [easily] obtained as a memento of one’s journey; and they can display the evolution of both aircraft and airlines, through the use of logos, service marks, and other designs.” Bag fans agree that one of the top collectibles was produced by the now-defunct Finnaviation, an elegant design showing the profile of a blue reindeer spewing what looks like a pile of sugar cubes. Kelly calls it “the barfing reindeer.” “You look at it and you say, okay, I know what this is for,” said Silberberg, who lives in Saco, Maine. A series of cartoonish bags produced by Virgin Atlantic in the mid-2000s is also popular, featuring designs customized to certain routes the airline wanted to promote. Some include vomitous imagery. “Who says something functional can’t be fun? Well, you can’t get much more function than the airline sick bag, so we decided it was time to inject a little creativity into this familiar item,” the airline wrote on the back of its bags in the series. The 20 iterations were the result of an online competition called “Design for Chunks.” Mundy’s collection includes one bag said to be from Air Force One, though he calls the plastic bag tucked into an envelope “very disappointing.” Not a presidential seal to be found. Kelly is similarly disappointed in the small airlines in Alaska that have no designed bags. “It’s terrible,” he said. “It could be such a prolific play for collectors, but it’s not.” He’s hoping to take a trip to parts of Africa that he hasn’t yet visited and add to his collection that way. For Silberberg, the favorite is a bag from the space shuttle obtained by a friend with a family connection to the space agency. The “emesis bag,” as a tag calls it, includes a drawing of a suited-up astronaut. “This is the trophy bag!” he wrote on the website. “Can you tell that this bag has made my life worth living?” Silberberg, who owns a company that takes people on fitness-focused backpacking trips, said his ownership of the domains airsicknessbags.com and barfbags.com leads to donations from people who want to purge their own collections. He calls donors or swappers “Patrons of Puke.” The virtual museum has earned Silberberg a small measure of fame; he is even featured in this year’s Dull Men’s Club Calendar for July. But he’d really love to bring the museum to a brick-and-mortar existence. “I don’t know if it’ll ever happen, but you know, someday I would love to have a one- or two-room museum off the interstate in the middle of nowhere,” he said. “Where I just sat there all day and people in their Winnebago would show up on their way to an actual vacation and stop in.”
