Pipeline Operator Agrees To $50M California Spill Settlement – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/pipeline-operator-agrees-to-50m-california-spill-settlement-69news-wfmz-tv/ SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — A pipeline operator has agreed to pay $50 million to thousands of Southern California fishermen, tourism companies and property owners who sued after an offshore oil spill last year near Huntington Beach. A proposed settlement between Amplify Energy Corp., which owns the pipeline that ruptured in October 2021 and spilled 25,000 gallons (94,600 liters) of crude oil into the Pacific Ocean, and the businesses and residents was filed Monday in federal court in Santa Ana, court documents show. Under the proposal, the Houston-based energy company would pay $34 million to commercial fishermen and $9 million to coastal property owners. It also would pay $7 million to waterfront tourism operators, including businesses that provide surf lessons and leisure cruises and shops that sell swimwear and fishing bait. A federal judge still needs to sign off on the proposal for it to take effect. A hearing is scheduled for Nov. 16. “This is a really dramatic first step and a dramatic compensation for these victims of this terrible tragedy,” said Wylie Aitken, co-lead counsel for the plaintiffs, whom he estimated number more than 10,000. “Though it may not be 100% it is very substantial and very helpful and a good deal of compensation to them. We’re going to continue to try to get every last penny that they deserve.” The proposal requires Amplify to install a leak detection system and provide spill training to employees, steps that the company also agreed to in a plea deal with federal authorities. It also would require Amplify to increase staffing on an offshore oil platform, court papers show. The leak occurred about 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) offshore and sent blobs of crude washing ashore in surf-friendly Huntington Beach and other coastal communities. While less severe than initially feared, the spill shuttered the beaches in the area for a week, fisheries for more than a month, oiled birds and threatened area wetlands. Amplify had no comment Tuesday and referred to a statement issued when the agreement was reached in August calling it a “reasonable and fair resolution.” The company said it would continue to seek damages from shipping vessels accused of dragging anchor and damaging the pipeline months before the leak. Amplify has $200 million in liability insurance coverage for spill-related claims and as of March the company had incurred costs of about $111 million, according to the court papers filed by the plaintiffs. Earlier this year, Amplify reached a plea deal with federal authorities for negligently discharging crude oil. The company, which authorities said failed to respond to leak detection system alarms that should have alerted workers to the spill, agreed to pay a combined $13 million in fines and expenses incurred by government agencies. Amplify contends that two commercial shipping vessels damaged its pipeline when they dragged their anchors across it during a January 2021 storm. The proposed settlement doesn’t apply to the operators of those ships or to an organization that helps oversee marine traffic, which has also been brought into the litigation. Health Makers: Ron Gura, 38, Co-Founder And CEO Of Empathy – Everyday Health https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/health-makers-ron-gura-38-co-founder-and-ceo-of-empathy-everyday-health/ By Ron Gura as told to Abby Ellin I’ve been thinking about bereavement and the impact it has on families my whole life. My middle brother, Amir, died of a rare childhood cancer at age 8. I was very, very young, but I knew there was something different about us. My mother kept my brother’s room locked. It was a weird, constant reminder that something had happened, this taboo topic that we really didn’t talk about. I wish I could have lessened the burden for my mother. Death is kind of like my brother’s door: always present, seen but never spoken of. I think we are a grief illiterate culture. Kids ask questions about mortality: ‘What happened to Mufasa in The Lion King?’ Parents say ‘Nothing.’ That shouldn’t be. We should understand that life is precious. For something that doesn’t skip any of us, nobody’s getting any death support — time-saving tools, streamlining workflows, all the good stuff we get in every other aspect of life. When someone dies, there are 540 hours of paperwork, and red tape to manage in the days, months, and sometimes years after. My friend and co-founder, Yonatan Bergman, and I wanted people to understand the cost of dying — not just the financials, but all of it. In late 2020 we started working on the company, called Empathy. We like to say that Empathy is the friend you wish you had when you lose a loved one. The knowledgeable, experienced friend who is helping you out with grief but who is also the Turbo Tax for estate administration. We raised $13 million in seed money and launched in May 2021. Empathy streamlines the logistics following loss, guiding families through all of these challenges and taking on some of the burden for them. We hired renowned grief expert, David Kessler, as our Chief Empathy officer is David Kessler. David worked with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, MD, and manages our emotional support team and care specialists. But it’s not just about emotional care. On average, the total financial cost of dying is $12,702, including the funeral and professional help. The funeral alone is $7,267. But that doesn’t take into account the productivity hit, the therapists or social workers you might hire. That doesn’t include the paperwork and lost time. Almost 80 percent of people use funds from their checking accounts to pay for a death. Most people know that caregiving is a big, unappreciated job, but caring and giving doesn’t stop after the loss. Being the executor is another job. We have people who are escorting their loved ones to hospice and want to start planning ahead. But the vast majority of our clients come to us in the first 48 hours after the loss. They’re not sure what can wait and what needs to be taken care of right away. They’re overwhelmed. We have a website and app and also offer a service that gives step-by-step instructions for everything you need to take care of, tailored to you, after losing a loved one. It doesn’t matter if you are Jewish or Muslim or Christin or any other religion. We understand that everyone has their own unique situation. You can test it for free, and then it’s $8.99 a month. Empathy has partnerships with companies in the funeral space, hospice space, and New York Life. You’ll find information on funeral arrangements, claiming benefits, taxes, probate, selling the house, self-care. Earlier this year, we published the Cost of Dying (PDF) report, in which we asked 2,000 U.S. families about how they dealt with the loss of a loved one. Almost 30 percent said they hadn’t done any estate planning. People don’t compare pricing, they don’t plan ahead, they don’t even do advance directives or a trust. Most people use their own funds, credit cards, or cashed in investments, to pay their expenses. People need to talk about death. They should understand death is a part of life. It’s not something to hide. Ignoring it doesn’t allow us to celebrate life as we are supposed to.

Worship In The Metaverse OpEd Eurasia Review Eurasia Review
Worship In The Metaverse – OpEd – Eurasia Review – Eurasia Review https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/worship-in-the-metaverse-oped-eurasia-review-eurasia-review/ By A. Trevor Sutton* Health is the silence of the organs. When one’s bodily organs function as they should, there is a relative silence within the body. A pancreas is neither heard nor felt as long as it is functioning properly. A malfunctioning pancreas, however, cries out with pain and discomfort. And so the normal functioning of the bodily organs goes on largely unnoticed.   Luke the Evangelist, a physician and author of the Gospel of Luke, wanted his readers to notice the body—especially in the final chapter of the text. Anatomy abounds in the account of the resurrection as Luke invites his readers to meet Jesus on an Emmaus-bound road with Cleopas and his nameless companion. While walking with resurrected feet, Jesus used resurrected vocal cords to talk. Days prior, those vocal cords cried out, “It is finished!” (John 19:30). Yet Jesus now spoke of how Moses and all the prophets foretold the events that had just passed. Along with feet and mouths, other parts of the body appear in this account: Resurrected eardrums that had once heard “Crucify him!” (Mark 15:13) were now met with the flummoxed inquiries of Cleopas. Later in the narrative, Jesus broke bread with resurrected hands as eyes opened, hearts burned, and mouths were set agape in awe and worship. The feet, mouths, ears, hands, eyes, and hearts make it clear: Worship and the wonder of the human body come together in Luke’s Gospel. This post-resurrection account combines salvation and the senses, faith in Christ Jesus and the fleshy promises of the empty tomb. The resurrection of Jesus forever altered our understanding of the human body and the way that our bodies respond in worship. Because the Divine Physician is risen, our organs cannot remain silent—they cry out in worship with hope and rejoicing. An emerging technology—the “metaverse”—has the potential to alter this understanding of the human body and worship. While it is difficult to arrive at a single definition for the metaverse, it is generally understood as a 3D version of the internet. The metaverse is an immersive virtual world that is accessed by means of a virtual reality headset. The digital world that is the metaverse is beginning to transform how people live, work, play, meet, and worship. The last on this list—worship in the metaverse—is our focus here. The Oklahoma-based megachurch Life.Church recently began offering worship services in the metaverse. Others are sure to follow. Bringing Christian worship to the metaverse raises many questions: Does this sort of worship accord with God’s plans for worship? What are the implications of merging digital media and the divine service? Which specific technologies should or should not be used for worship? Which aspects of worship can or cannot be mediated? What might the metaverse do to Christian congregations? Are some ecclesiologies or Christian traditions more or less congenial to worship in the metaverse? What might the metaverse do to Christian congregations? Are some ecclesiologies or Christian traditions more or less congenial to worship in the metaverse? Answering all these questions is beyond the scope of this article. However, this article will seek to clarify the opaque world of worship in the metaverse, enabling interested readers to investigate further with an enhanced vocabulary. Worship: An Assembly Around What? Across various Christian traditions, the topic of worship is highly discussed and widely divergent. Although corporate worship is a feature present in all Christendom, there is tremendous diversity in both the theology and practice of worship. From an ecumenical perspective, defining worship can be very difficult. Is there anything commonly held about corporate worship across the majority of Christian traditions? At the very least, agreement exists that corporate worship by its very nature involves assembling for worship, transcending differences of theology and practice. Scripture even depicts corporate worship as an assembly. While the New Testament uses several different words to talk about worship (latreia, threskeia, leitourgia), the word ecclesia expresses the essentially corporate nature of worship. At a minimum, corporate worship involves coming together, convening, or assembling in some way (1 Cor. 11:18, 20; 14:23). Gordon W. Lathrop, in his book Holy People: A Liturgical Ecclesiology, argues that assembling is the most basic feature of Christian worship: “Assembly, a gathering together of participating persons, constitutes the most basic symbol of Christian worship. All the other symbols and symbolic actions of liturgy depend upon this gathering being there in the first place.” Yet, almost immediately, this simple assertion runs into problems. Does this assembly have to be in person within the same physical space? Or can this assembly be in a digitally mediated space such as the metaverse? Can it be a hybrid of the two, with some people gathering in person while others livestream at home? Unfortunately, Scripture is silent on these questions, since the churches in Corinth and Philippi, existing in a pre-scientific and pre-digital age, knew only in-person gatherings. This means that contemporary Christians must develop some more nuanced understandings regarding worship, digital media, and how they relate to the human body. Whether in person or in the metaverse, assembling for worship assumes there is a center around which the assembly coalesces. What is at the center of this corporate worship? Worship is an assembly around what? Avery Dulles, in his classic ecclesiological text Models of the Church, explores the distinct emphases within worship. Dulles’ five models of the church—Church as Institution, Church as Mystical Communion, Church as Sacrament, Church as Herald, and Church as Servant—all coalesce around different centers. According to Dulles, various ecclesiological models place different aspects of the worship service at the center of worship. For instance, the Church as Sacrament model identifies the Eucharist as being the centerpiece of worship, while the Church as Herald model recognizes the Word of God proclaimed and heard as being the centerpiece of worship. Dulles makes it clear: Different Christian traditions place different things at the center of corporate worship. While this insight may not immediately help us make sense of the church in the metaverse, it will play an important role as we explore a framework for a balanced understanding as the church looks to the future of worship in the metaverse. Worship: An Assembly of What? While different Christian traditions may disagree on what is at the center of worship, there is agreement that worship is an assembly of people gathered for a common religious practice. Approaching worship from this perspective shifts exploration toward topics such as creatureliness, embodiment, and what it means to be human. Martin Luther, in his explanation of the first article of the Apostles’ Creed, offers a basic understanding of what it means to be an embodied human creature: “I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them.” Notably, Luther connects creatureliness to the bodily senses. John Calvin, in his Catechism of the Church of Geneva, echoes Luther’s emphasis on the importance of the bodily senses as they relate to Christian anthropology. Calvin connects the sacraments to the bodily senses so that God’s promises are comprehended through all those senses: As we are surrounded with this body of clay, we need figures or mirrors to exhibit a view of spiritual and heavenly things in a kind of earthly manner; for we could not otherwise attain to them. At the same time, it is our interest to have all our senses exercised in the promises of God, that they may be the better confirmed to us. In other words, Calvin argues for a multisensory relationship between the creatures and the Creator. Calvin indicates that the bodily senses are integral to being a human creature and that these senses are vital when it comes to receiving the promises of God.   The importance of the bodily senses is certainly not limited to Protestant traditions. Drawing on insights from the ancient Ignatian Spiritual Exercises, Pope Francis highlighted the role of the bodily senses in an address from the Vatican in 2017: In the human body, the senses are our first connection to the world ad extra; they are like a bridge towards that world; they enable us to relate to it. The senses help us to grasp reality and at the same time to situate ourselves in reality. Not by chance did Saint Ignatius appeal to the senses for the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ and truth. Pope Francis, like many theologians before him, indicates that the bodily senses play a crucial role in interacting with the world in general and worship in particular. Eastern Orthodox theology also has something to say on this topic. John Zizioulas, in his Being as Communion: Studies in Personhood and the Church, explores how the church is an incarnate community in communion with the Trinity. According to Zizioulas, one cannot be fully human without being in relation to others, just as the church cannot be the Body of Christ without being incarnate: “A Church must incarnate people, not ideas or beliefs.” Although Lutherans, Calvinists, Catholics, and Orthodox may disagree on worship theologically, they agree on worship anthropologically. These Christian traditions agree that worship involves wholly human creatures engaged in the ongoing communion of body and soul, eyes, ears, members, reason, and senses. Worship: An Assembly with What?  Having established that worship is an assembly of human persons (sens...

Awesome Appliances To Consider Installing In Your New Kitchen – The Seeker Newsmagazine Cornwall – The Seeker https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/awesome-appliances-to-consider-installing-in-your-new-kitchen-the-seeker-newsmagazine-cornwall-the-seeker/ The kitchen is where you experiment with food, invent new recipes and cook for your family! It is the heart of every home and therefore it must be thought out and designed so that it is beautiful and pleasant to stay in, but also functional and resistant. Thankfully, there are numerous gadgets you can install in your kitchen to make it more practical and maximize the use of space. With the right “tools” and design, cooking will surely become your new hobby and favorite everyday activity. In the text below, we’ll show you a few appliances worth installing in your new kitchen.  Toaster For a quick breakfast, dinner, or snack, you need a toaster. You will get toasted bread with a crispier crust if you keep it in the toaster for a longer time, or it tastes like an excellent treat. You can just spread it with jam, butter, pate, hummus, or Nutella and the meal is ready. If you cut it into cubes and add it to a salad, you will get a great addition to lunch, dinner, or a light summer dish. Of course, you can also make a toast of your choice. The taste and doneness depend on the thickness of the toast. You get softer toast with thicker slices, while it will be crispier if the slices are thin. You can also toast breadcrumbs.  Ice maker  Every new kitchen needs a little appliance for outstanding ice; without it, you’ll have to host parties with warm drinks. Not only that, the uses of an ice maker are many. You can make ice cones, with several different flavors. These are known to be true refreshments during long and hot summer days. Although, for ice cones, you’ll need an ice maker capable of making nugget ice, soft and with great texture yet firm enough to be served on a cone and flavored with syrup. For this purpose, the newer and specialized nugget ice makers are the real choice. Nugget ice, crunchable and soft, is perfect for kids and a healthier substitute as opposed to regular store-bought ice cream. Add any flavor you want, and you’ll have a real treat for every sweet tooth.  Juicer or blender The best mixes of vegetables and fruits can be made with blenders and juicers. It is not only healthy to drink but it also doesn’t contain artificial additives. You will get a real vitamin bomb in a glass with these devices. It is important to take in natural vitamins and minerals. When you are out of the house, fast food is usually your choice. Change bad habits. Blend fruits or vegetables in a blender and take healthy meals with you wherever you are. You will use the blender to the maximum and enjoy delicious smoothies all the time. With the help of a blender, you can also prepare porridges for the youngest, pots of various vegetables, and quick meals.  Juicers also give you all the needed vitamins for strong immunity. If you like clear drinks, then juicers are the way to go. This device separates the pulp and as a final result gives a liquid juice that is quickly absorbed by the body and is a balm for the digestive system. Believe it or not, it is better to drink apple juice from a juicer than to eat a whole apple, because it will be used several times better in the body. Waffle maker  With this machine, you can make delicious and interesting treats with eggs and nuts. It’s all up to you. Galletes, grandma’s cake, or waffle, the essence is the same. You will get a great dessert with different spreads. Instead of ordinary white flour, you can use buckwheat, rye, and flax, and get a healthy snack. Never scratch the surface of such an appliance with a fork, knife, or other kitchen utensils during use. Induction stove An induction stove will allow water to boil or cook food in half the time compared to ordinary plates and hotplates. Some of the advantages are that the oven will not even turn on if there is no food in the bowl. If the container is not made of adequate material, the stove will not start. These are just some of the appliances that you need to have in the kitchen in order to complete all tasks faster and easier. Technomedia offers the maximum selection at the lowest prices. The ability to “hide” all of these appliances within kitchen cabinets and look for designs that allow the devices to be integrated as part of the working counter and other elements is one advantage for maximizing experience and better use of space. This is usually the case with an induction stove, and can also be the case with some of the appliances mentioned above.  Luci is a Journalism student and covers interesting topics from health to finances. (Kitco News) – Interpol, the world’s largest global police organization, has reportedly formed a new special division that will focus on investigating cryptocurrency-related crimes. The announcement of the new unit came during a press conference ahead of its 90th general assembly in Delhi, which is attended by high-profile police officials from its 195 member countries. The new dedicated crypto division will be based in Singapore. It will focus on helping governments fight crimes that involve digital assets. When discussing the new unit, Interpol secretary general Jürgen Stock highlighted that advancements in digital technology combined with the rise of cryptocurrencies “pose a challenge to law enforcement, because very often, they [agencies] are not properly trained and properly equipped from the beginning.” According to Stock, a large proportion of the assets produced by criminals for activities related to cybercrime, terrorism and crimes against children are “laundered by using cryptocurrency.” Praveen Sinha, the special director of India’s Central Bureau of Investigations, also noted that it is becoming increasingly difficult to decipher cybercrime and suggested that “The only answer is international cooperation, coordination, trust, and real-time sharing of information.” Due to the increased risks, cryptocurrency and cybercrime have been made the main focus of the agenda at Interpol’s general assembly in India, and will continue to be a point of focus moving forward as the agency works towards its vision 2030 plan. #Crypto currencies are emerging as major threat across the globe: Jurgen Stock, Interpol chief The Interpol global complex for innovation in Singapore is working on a mechanism to deal with challenges emerging from #Cryptocurency — Sachin Singh (@sachinsingh1010) October 18, 2022 Interpol’s efforts to better track and investigate cryptocurrency crimes have been in the works as far back as 2015 when the agency first began training agents to use cryptos and navigate the darknet. Most recently, the agency issued a Red Notice for Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon, who has been in hiding over the past five months following the implosion of Terra/Luna and its TerraUSD stablecoin, which sent a contagion shockwave across the crypto ecosystem. Kwon is wanted in South Korea, where he faces charges related to the $60 billion collapse of the projects he founded. On April 15, 2022, the local power utility alerted the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration about workers constructing a five-story apartment building too close to nearby power lines. After arriving at the site, OSHA inspectors found employees at risk of electrocution as they worked from a metal scaffold erected within five feet of high-voltage power lines. OSHA informed the project’s developer, Litana Development Inc. of Wayne and two subcontractors, Prata Construction LLC of Denville – a carpentry contractor – and Elite Brothers Construction LLC of Paterson – a stucco contractor – of the dangers and told them work must not continue. The agency subsequently posted an Imminent Danger Notice in English and Spanish to warn workers at the site about the extreme danger. On June 23, 2022, the department’s Regional Office of the Solicitor secured a temporary restraining order in U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey in Newark to enforce OSHA’s Imminent Danger Notice. Attorneys for the department and Litana negotiated a consent injunction, entered on July 5, 2022, to resume work as long as workers remained 11 feet away from the power lines. On July 15, 2022, OSHA found that work had once again been performed dangerously close to the power lines. On August 2, 2022, the court entered a more restrictive Modified Consent Injunction which provided for third-party monitoring and physical barriers to ensure that workers would be kept safe. “Litana Development and its subcontractors willfully exposed workers to potentially deadly electrocution hazards by making them work too close to energized power lines,” said OSHA Regional Administrator Richard Mendelson in New York. “Despite repeatedly being told of the danger involved with this construction project, the companies ignored warnings and even a court order.” OSHA issued citations and penalties as follows: Employer Violations Proposed penalties Litana Development Inc. Three willful $435,081 Prata Construction LLC One willful, two serious $41,478 Elite Brothers Construction LLC One willful, three serious $41,478 “The U.S. Department of Labor will use all available enforcement tools to protect workers’ safety, and to ensure violations are remedied to prevent tragedies,” said Regional Solicitor of Labor Jeffrey S. Rogoff in New York. View the citations. The companies have 15 business days from receipt of its citations and penalties to comply, request an informal conference with OSHA’s area director or contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

New Cancer Treatment Technology At Halifax Hospital – CTV News Atlantic https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-cancer-treatment-technology-at-halifax-hospital-ctv-news-atlantic/ Nova Scotia Health says it has acquired a new machine that provides radiation cancer treatment and is the first of its kind in Canada. The announcement was made Monday in Halifax by Nova Scotia Health and Wellness Minister Michelle Thompson. The Ethos Therapy system has been installed at the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre. It combines artificial intelligence with adaptive therapy, which is said to result in shorter treatment times for patients. “Not only can Ethos improve the way Nova Scotians receive cancer care, but the research behind it has global weight,” said Thompson in a news release. “As many health professionals are drawn to state-of-the-art technology, systems like Ethos help with our recruitment efforts.” Karen Oldfield, the interim president and CEO of Nova Scotia Health, says a new medical physicist has been recruited because of Ethos. The newly-acquired machine was made possible by $8 million in QEII Foundation donations, $12 million in funding from the Nova Scotia government and a “significant” contribution from Varian Medical Systems, which makes the Ethos therapy system. “World-leading innovation is exciting, but the real impact is on Nova Scotians, who will have access to life-changing care that isn’t offered anywhere else in Canada. This initiative is made possible thanks to donor support,” said Susan Mullin, president and CEO of the QEII Foundation. The machine is not yet approved by Health Canada so, for now, it will only be used in clinical trials, which are set to get underway later this month. Recruitment is underway for the first research study, which will include 30 patients focused on breast, liver, and lung cancers. The second study will focus on head and neck cancers.

Meta Agrees To Sell Giphy, Ending Battle With UK Regulators – Business News – Castanet.net https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/meta-agrees-to-sell-giphy-ending-battle-with-uk-regulators-business-news-castanet-net/ Meta agrees to sell Giphy The Associated Press – Oct 18, 2022 / 7:22 am | Story: 391197 Photo: The Canadian Press Facebook parent Meta said Tuesday that it will sell off Giphy after running out of options to thwart a ruling by U.K. regulators, who again found that the deal to buy the GIF-sharing platform would limit competition and innovation. Britain’s competition watchdog had ordered Meta last year to reverse the deal — a year after it was announced — but the company appealed to a tribunal, which rejected most of its arguments. After reviewing the case further, the Competition and Markets Authority concluded that “the only way to avoid the significant impact the deal would have on competition” is for Meta to sell Giphy to an approved buyer. “We are disappointed by the CMA’s decision but accept today’s ruling as the final word on the matter. We will work closely with the CMA on divesting GIPHY,” Meta said in a statement. “We will continue to evaluate opportunities — including through acquisition — to bring innovation and choice to more people in the UK and around the world.” New York-based Giphy’s library of short looping videos, or GIFs, are a popular tool for internet users sending messages or posting on social media. Meta said it would wait for more details on the divestment order and wouldn’t file another appeal, bringing to an end the drawn-out battle over the acquisition reportedly worth $400 million. It was the first time the U.K. watchdog had sought to unwind a tech deal and marked a prelude to stepped-up scrutiny: earlier this year the CMA opened inquiries into Amazon’s dominance and Microsoft’s purchase of videogame maker Activision Blizzard. The watchdog’s original in-depth investigation found that Facebook’s purchase of Giphy would hurt social media users and advertisers by stifling competition for animated images. After reviewing its decision, the watchdog concluded Tuesday that the deal would boost traffic to Meta-owned sites, while denying or limiting access for online platforms to Giphy GIFs. It also found that the deal would remove potential competition from the U.K.’s 7 billion pound ($7.9 billion) display advertising market, half of which Facebook controls.

The Moran Company Places CEO For Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement – Hunt Scanlon Media https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-moran-company-places-ceo-for-jesse-lewis-choose-love-movement-hunt-scanlon-media/ October 18, 2022 – The Moran Company, an executive recruitment firm that specializes in the non-profit sector, has helped to place Claas Ehlers as chief executive officer, a newly created role, for the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Movement (CLM) in Newtown, CT. The non-profit works to teach social and emotional learning. Scarlett Lewis, who founded the organization shortly after her six-year-old son, Jesse, was murdered during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in 2012, has stepped down from the top leadership role and continues to serve as chief movement officer. Senior search consultant Gretchen Kunkel led the assignment for the search firm. Filling the CEO role was a critical step in CLM’s plans to increase impact, said the Moran Company. Mr. Ehlers was selected after an extensive national search. He previously served as CEO of Family Promise, a national federated non-profit addressing family homelessness. In his five years in that position, following more than a decade in other roles at the organization, Family Promise tripled the number of people receiving services, expanded strategic partnerships, significantly increased revenue, and established itself as a national leader in housing and homelessness. Choose Love will look to Mr. Ehlers to drive similar growth. “Choose Love is a proven curriculum that has had tremendous impact,” said Ms. Lewis. “We have a simple goal: To involve as many people as possible in our programs to reduce anger, alienation, and violence.” “Claas’ experience and background in organizational growth will increase our impact and make Choose Love a lifespan solution that builds a culture of love, resilience, forgiveness, and connection in our communities at a time when it is needed the most,” Ms. Lewis said. Changing the Future Mr. Ehlers said he was excited about his new job and the organization. “Already, millions of people have gone through the curriculum and learned literally to ‘choose love,’” he said. “My work has always focused on changing the future for children. I look to help transform Choose Love and accomplish that same goal on a much larger scale.” CLM was seeking a seasoned, highly skilled, and collaborative leader to take the organization and movement to the next level, said The Moran Company. In his new role, Mr. Ehlers is charged with working with the board and founder/chief movement officer to further develop the organization’s platform as a leader within the character and social emotional development (CSED) industry and the choice for creating safe and more loving schools, homes, and communities. With an eye for growth and future sustainability, Mr. Ehlers is expected to provide overall leadership for strategy and operations, staff and organizational development, financial oversight, and revenue generation. Responsibilities of the role revolve around leadership and vision, revenues and operations, personnel management, and board relations. Among his duties, Mr. Ehlers serves as spokesperson for the organization. Related: Moran Company Seeks CEO for Intermountain The Choose Love Movement’s mission is to create safer and more loving communities through CSED programs that are suitable for all stages of life. CLM is operated under the guidance of a 12-member board of directors, managed by 14 full-time and part-time employees, and delivered by over 125 trained ambassadors worldwide with countless volunteers helping spread the message within their schools, homes, and communities. Since its inception in 2013, three million children from more than 120 countries have used CLM’s programs across more than 10,000 schools. Non-Profit Recruiters The Moran Company, based in Leawood, KS, specializes in searches for non-profit leadership, including executive directors, fundraising/development directors, hospital foundation directors and other senior executives. Bill Moran founded the search firm in 1996. He has worked on more than 60 non-profit searches over the past 12 years. He has spent another 10 years as senior fundraising staff and 12 years as a fundraising consultant serving more than 100 clients. Ms. Kunkel has 25 years of experience addressing a broad array of family and community health issues, including children’s and women’s health, community development, early care and education, food systems and food insecurity, healthy eating and active living, and public health. In 2004, she helped found KC Healthy Kids, a non-profit organization advancing children’s health by increasing opportunities for healthy eating and active living. From 2008 to 2018, she served as the organization’s second president. Before that, Ms. Kunkel served as associate executive director of the Center for Community Solutions, a research and advocacy non-profit organization, and the director of community health services at the Center for Health Affairs, a metropolitan hospital association, both located in Cleveland. Liverpool FC Is Heading Further Into The Metaverse With Meta Digital Apparel Deal Forbes
Liverpool FC Is Heading Further Into The Metaverse With Meta Digital Apparel Deal Forbes
Liverpool FC Is Heading Further Into The Metaverse With Meta Digital Apparel Deal – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/liverpool-fc-is-heading-further-into-the-metaverse-with-meta-digital-apparel-deal-forbes/ NurPhoto via Getty Images Liverpool FC is taking another step into the metaverse. Earlier this year, the Merseyside club ventured into the space with a set of digital collectibles in the marketplace run by Sotheby’s auction house. Now, it is announcing a collection of digital clothing available in the Meta Avatars Store. Fans will be able to purchase the Liverpool team gear to customize their digital avatars on Meta platforms including Facebook and Instagram. The initial offering has versions of Liverpool’s home and away shirts, as well as LFC-branded hoodie and sweatpants outfits, available to users in the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Mexico, Spain, Italy, and Thailand. A debut of the merchandise for Meta Quest headsets that bring users into virtual reality worlds is scheduled for later this year. Why is Liverpool dealing in digital clothing featuring the club’s crest and colors? Is this a play for novelty or utility? Digital avatars are intended to make internet, gaming, and social media experiences more immersive. They have appeared on those platforms for decades. The recent excitement over the metaverse and Web3 has accelerated and added broader attention to how they could be used. Corporate marketing departments and advertising firms have increasingly been seeking best-fit entry points to engage with audiences that use digital avatars. Professional sports leagues and teams have increasingly gotten in on the game, coming through with partnerships and offerings that boast league logos and team trademarks. Liverpool is the first sports brand to introduce merchandise in the Meta Avatar Store. The store was recently launched with high-end fashion houses Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne offering special, for-purchase items alongside a selection of more run-of-the-mill, free options. It doesn’t take a look through VR goggles to see that Liverpool could be making more than a fashion statement here. The club has more than 80 million followers on its Facebook and Instagram channels alone. Team apparel for digital avatars allows any number of them to put on display their sense of personal identity and association with the team. That can lead to stronger relationships with both existing fans and untapped customers, which can pay social and economic dividends now and in the longer-run. In short, it is about Liverpool using the digital clothing to open pathways for connecting to its supporter communities. Team jersey sales in the physical world have long served that purpose. And they are big business. Liverpool sold nearly 2.5 million shirts in Europe last year, the third most of all clubs on the continent. Its current deal with Nike as kit supplier, which includes rights fees and a 20% cut of all sales, has been reported to potentially bring the club about $100 million per year. Time will tell whether that level of success can be met—or surpassed—in the metaverse. The metaverse is in its infancy and struggling to attract users. So, there is a ways to go for sales of the digital version reaching that level. But Liverpool’s digital clothing deal meets the criteria for an effective, innovative opportunity. To begin with, marketing branded clothing to the public is a simple (though not easy) and familiar practice given Liverpool’s knowledge and know-how. Producing and selling the digital versions requires relatively little contribution of financial and human resources. Aiming at market leadership, grounded in a habit of testing and adjusting processes in response to results, is embedded in the organization’s DNA. Those characteristics, and the culture they infuse, are driven by a flywheel based on knowledge development and knowledge sharing. The same appears across all of the properties owned by Fenway Sports Group—in addition to Liverpool, the Boston-based holding company has controlling interests in MLB’s Boston Red Sox, NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins, NASCAR’s Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing, NESN regional sports network, Fenway Sports Management marketing firm, and Fenway Sports Group Real Estate, as well as a minority stake in The SpringHill Company enterprise created by NBA superstar LeBron James and his longtime business partner Maverick Carter. It paves the way for exploring new directions, testing them, and then heading toward a goal. The Liverpool-branded clothing made for the metaverse is a new concept, but not much different from what the club has been doing for a long time. As its fans know, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” wherever you are and in whatever world you—or your avatar—are in.

Best P2P Crypto Exchanges For 2022 Cryptonews
Best P2P Crypto Exchanges For 2022 Cryptonews
Best P2P Crypto Exchanges For 2022 – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/best-p2p-crypto-exchanges-for-2022-cryptonews/ Disclaimer: The Industry Talk section features insights from crypto industry players and is not a part of the editorial content of Cryptonews.com. Peer-to-peer (P2P) exchanges enable traders to swap cryptocurrencies without needing to go through a third party.  Instead, traders can buy cryptocurrencies directly from the seller using their preferred payment method. The transaction is usually protected by an escrow service, which ensures that neither the buyer nor seller is scammed.  In this comparison guide, we review the best P2P crypto exchange platforms in the market.  The Top 8 P2P Crypto Exchanges Ranked In terms of supported markets, pricing, user-friendliness, and other important metrics – the best P2P crypto exchange platforms can be found on the list below: OKX – Overall Best P2P Crypto Exchange  Binance – Peer-to-Peer Ecosystem With 300+Payment Methods  Uniswap – Leading Decentralized Exchange for Ethereum-Based Tokens  PancakeSwap – Most Popular DEX for Trading BSc Tokens Huobi – Top Peer-to-Peer Exchange to Trade USDT, BTC, and ETH Bybit – Derivatives Exchange Offering P2P Trades via Fiat Money    LocalBitcoins – Enjoy 30 Days of 0% Trading Fees After Registering   DeFi Swap – Up-and-Coming DEX About to Launch Visit OKX Now The Best Peer-to-Peer Bitcoin Exchanges Reviewed Choosing the best P2P crypto exchange will depend on a variety of factors. For instance, while some exchanges in this space specialize in Ethereum-based tokens, others support the BSc standard.  It is also important to assess factors surrounding security, reputation, fees, and mobile friendliness when selecting a provider.  Below, we provide reviews of the eight best P2P crypto exchanges in the market.  1. OKX – Overall Best P2P Crypto Exchange OKX is the overall best P2P crypto exchange to consider today. Although OKX is primarily known for its centralized spot trading exchange – which supports fiat currency deposits, it has since opened its own P2P alternative. This will appeal to traders that wish to swap tokens without going through a centralized order book.  Moreover, and perhaps most importantly, the OKX P2P Bitcoin exchange utilizes an aggregator pricing algorithm. In simple terms, this means that OKX can scour the market across multiple decentralized exchanges to find the best price possible for traders. For instance, let’s suppose that the trader wishes to swap Ethereum for Shiba Inu.  In this scenario, OKX would extract data from the likes of Uniswap, SushiSwap, and ShibaSwap to find the best price possible. OKX also hosts its own DEX, which often offers the best price possible – especially on ERC-20 tokens. We also like that OKX enables traders to set their network fees, from slow, average, and fast.  When swapping tokens, OKX also enables custom slippage rates. As is the case with most of the providers that make our list of the best P2P crypto exchanges, OKX enables clients to trade simply by connecting a wallet. The exchange supports MetaMask, Phantom, and WalletConnect. The latter offers access to the vast majority of leading wallets via a QR code.  OKX is also the best P2P crypto exchange when it comes to supported coins. Not only does it support the best altcoins on the Ethereum blockchain, but other 10 other networks. This includes the likes of BSc, Cronos, Solana, Fantom, Avalanche, and Polygon. This means that OKX traders can execute trades on a cross-chain basis.  For instance, swapping USDT (Ethereum) for BNB (BSc). In addition to its DEX, OKX also offers a more conventional P2P trading platform. This enables traders to select their required tokens, country of residence, and preferred payment type. OKX will then display a range of options that support the trader’s requirements. Results are sorted by the best price on offer. When it comes to fees, In terms of fees, the OKX DEX simply utilizes the network fee and passes this on to the trader. For instance, as of writing, swapping 1 BNB for BUSD would yield a network fee of just $0.37. Trading fees on the OKX P2P exchange, on the other hand, are set by the respective seller. This will be built into the exchange rate provided.  Another popular aspect of OKX is that it is often the go-to- exchange to buy new cryptocurrencies. For instance, OKX was the first exchange to enable investors to buy Tamadoge tokens – which is one of the best future cryptocurrency projects to watch. In fact, Tamadoge – which is building a P2E game and metaverse coin, generated gains of 10x in just 48 hours after listing on OKX.  Supported Coins Trading Fee USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH, TUSD, and DAI on P2P exchange. 1,000+on the OKX DEX Set by P2P sellers and built into the exchange rate.  Visit OKX P2P 2. Binance – Peer-to-Peer Ecosystem With 300+Payment Methods Binance is the largest centralized exchange globally. However, Binance is also a major player in the P2P trading space. Its P2P exchange hosts more than 300 payment methods across 70+fiat currencies. The former includes everything from local bank transfers and SEPA to Paypal and Western Union. As such, buying crypto via the Binance P2P exchange is seamless.  When using Binance for P2P exchanges, seven crypto assets are supported. This includes USDT, BTC, BUSC, BNB, ETH, ADA, and SHIB. The platform itself is very user-friendly and the filter system makes it a breeze to find a suitable seller. For instance, the user can select the coin they want to buy and their preferred payment method in their country of residence.  Binance will then display all suitable P2P sellers – listed from the most competitive price. Buyers accepting a P2P offer will not need to pay any transaction fees to Binance. Market makers, however, will pay between up to 0.35% depending on the trading pair and currency. We like that each trader on the Binance P2P will have their own profile.  This enables buyers to evaluate the legitimacy of the seller in a similar way to eBay. This is because buyers can leave reviews and ratings, which the seller cannot amend.  Supported Coins Trading Fee USDT, BTC, BUSC, BNB, ETH, ADA, and SHIB Set by P2P sellers and built into the exchange rate. Market makers will pay up to 0.35%. Visit Binance Now 3. Uniswap – Leading Decentralized Exchange for Ethereum-Based Tokens  Uniswap takes the P2P trading concept to the very next level. The reason for this is that the entire Uniswap ecosystem is decentralized. This means that no single person or entity has control over the platform and thus – trades are conducted on a truly peer-to-peer basis. In fact, there is no requirement for traders to open an account when using Uniswap.  Instead, it’s just a case of connecting a crypto wallet to the platform and carrying out a token swap. Users can even add their own trading pairs and liquidity pools should they wish. In terms of supported markets, Uniswap is the best P2P crypto exchange for Ethereum-based cryptocurrencies. This means that the platform supports thousands of ERC-20 token pairs.  Uniswap utilizes the automated market maker (AMM) system, which means that token swaps are carried out autonomously via liquidity pools. As such, buyers can swap tokens without needing to have a seller at the other end of the trade. Standard trading fees on the Uniswap DEX amount to 0.35% of the transaction size. A portion of the fees collected are sent to liquidity providers.  This is because Uniswap enables investors to engage with yield farming crypto tools. In simple terms, by adding idle tokens to a Uniswap liquidity pool, investors can earn a share of any trading commissions that are generated. Uniswap is also the go-to place to find the fastest-growing cryptocurrencies, with newly launched ERC-20 tokens preferring the exchange.    Supported Coins Trading Fee Most ERC-20 tokens Exchange rates set by AMM. 0.35% trading fee charged by Uniswap.  Visit Uniswap Now 4. PancakeSwap – Most Popular DEX for Trading BSc Tokens  While Uniswap is the go-to place for Ethereum-based coins, PancakeSwap dominates the BSc token swap scene. As such, PancakeSwap is ideal for finding the next crypto to explode, not least because many new projects now opt for the Binance Smart Chain as per its low fees and fast transaction speeds.  For instance, a recent example of this is the listing of Battle Infinity (IBAT), which is one of the best penny crypto assets of 2022. This P2E metaverse project had a hugely successful presale before generating sizable gains after listing on PancakeSwap. The PancakeSwap P2P platform – just like Uniswap, is actually a decentralized exchange rather than a peer-to-peer provider.  Nonetheless, this means that there is no requirement to open an account with PancakeSwap, nor is there a need to have a seller at the other end of the trade. Instead, PancakeSwap also utilizes the AMM model. PancakeSwap is slightly more cost-effective when compared to Uniswap, with the DEX charging 0.25% per trade.  PancakeSwap is also a good option for those that wish to generate income on their idle crypto tokens. The exchange supports high-yield farming pools across thousands of pairs. PancakeSwap also hosts regular lottery draws, with the top prize of writing at over $110,000. Where PancakeSwap falls short is that it lacks any advanced charting tools or data.  Supported Coins Trading Fee Most BSc tokens Exchange rates set by AMM. 0.25% trading fee charged by PancakeSwap.  Visit PancakeSwap Now 5. Huobi – Top Peer-to-Peer Exchange to Trade USDT, BTC, and ETH  In a similar nature to Binance, Huobi is best known for its low-cost centralized exchange. In fact, Huobi charges spot trading fees of just 0.20% across hundreds of crypto pairs. With that said, Huobi has also launched its very own peer-to-peer trading platform. In addition to its Huobi Token, the platform supports just three coins –...

U.S. Treasury Proposes Climate Data Collection Rule For Insurers Reuters
U.S. Treasury Proposes Climate Data Collection Rule For Insurers – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-treasury-proposes-climate-data-collection-rule-for-insurers-reuters/ Destroyed buildings are seen after Hurricane Ian caused widespread destruction, in Fort Myers Beach, Florida, U.S., October 4, 2022. REUTERS/Marco Bello WASHINGTON, Oct 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury on Tuesday said it was proposing a new rule to collect data on climate-related risks from property and casualty insurers, one of the first concrete actions in a new push to beef up financial regulation to help fight global warming. The Treasury’s Federal Insurance Office said in a Federal Register notice that it was seeking public comment on the proposal, under which it would collect current and historical underwriting data on homeowners’ insurance. The zip-code level data would provide the insurance office with “consistent, granular, and comparable insurance data needed to help assess the potential for major disruptions of private insurance coverage in regions of the country that are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The move comes less than three weeks after Hurricane Ian devastated Fort Myers Beach and other parts of Florida’s southwest coast, causing billions of dollars in both uninsured and insured damage and pushing some insurers to forecast financial losses. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has pressed U.S. financial regulators to make assessment of climate change risks a normal part of their everyday work, including a demand that companies increase disclosures of such risks to investors. Treasury said the proposed data collection rule would help the Federal Insurance Office to assess both the availability of insurance for millions of Americans as well as the affordability of such insurance. “Today’s action by the Federal Insurance Office is an important step in determining how Americans are being affected by the increasing costs of climate change,” Yellen said in a statement. “The recent impacts in Florida from Hurricane Ian demonstrate the critical nature of this work and the need for an increased understanding of insurance market vulnerabilities in the United States.” Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Reporting by David Lawder; Editing by Chizu Nomiyama Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

MatrixScan Count leverages MatrixScan technology to locate, track and decode multiple barcodes simultaneously. ‘) } // – The solution has been designed to provide stable, long-range performance for capturing as many items in one shot as possible at once, particularly important where large items are included. Offered as an out-of-box solution, the built-in user interface in MatrixScan Count has been included to reduce development time at installation. Workers using MatrixScan Count receive real-time on-screen alerts via augmented reality, guiding them to complete counting workflows precisely and avoiding incorrect products, double-counting or accidentally skipping items. Preset user interfaces mean that customizations including left-handed mode, strap mode and landscape scanning mode are provided depending on user preference. The solution is intended to increase worker productivity, reduce human error and maintain accurate stock levels. By shifting tedious, repetitive tasks from frontline workers to technology, errors in stock management or goods delivery can be eliminated while people are freed up to engage in value-add activities. In turn, this is expected to help retail and logistics enterprises maintain customer service levels and ensure accurate supply chain visibility in the face of economic pressures. At its booth, Scandit pointed out that the solution can be applied to stock taking and inventory counting, warehouses and back-of-store operations and van loading and unloading parcel verification and counting. Christian Floerkemeier, chief technology officer and co-founder of Scandit, said, “Counting accurately is a critical part of many business workflows for multiple industries, but tedious, multistep or manual processes still prevail. Enterprises are struggling to recruit and retain staff, so by introducing tools such as MatrixScan Count which reimagine processes to super-speed through tedious tasks, workers can engage in high-value assignments leading to an enhanced experience.” About Author Elizabeth Baker, web editor As the latest addition to the UKi Media & Events team, Elizabeth brings research skills from her English degree to her keen interest in the meteorological and transportation industries. Families And Their Pets Receive Help After Being Displaced By Nakia Creek Fire – Fox 12 Oregon https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/families-and-their-pets-receive-help-after-being-displaced-by-nakia-creek-fire-fox-12-oregon/ CAMAS, Wash. (KPTV) – At least 29 people forced from their homes due to the Nakia Creek Fire were staying at a Red Cross evacuation site, but they weren’t allowed to bring their pets inside the shelter overnight so some local organizations stepped up to help. The American Red Cross, Humane Society of Western Washington, and members of the community in Clark County helped the four-legged evacuees Monday night at the Camas Church of The Nazarene. When dozens of evacuees arrived on Sunday after getting the Level 3 “Go Now” notice to evacuate many had no time to plan for their pets. SEE ALSO: Evacuation zones for Nakia Creek Fire shrink, wildfire now estimated at 1,565 acres Unfortunately, the church couldn’t accommodate the animals. “We saw people sleeping in their cars, because they couldn’t bring them in, and there was no place for them, and they needed kennels.” Kimberly Romero, the owner of Mud Puppies Grooming, said. Romero was one of the community members who stopped by to help the Red Cross and the Humane Society of SW Washington. “I was like ‘I got kennels!’ From the salon, I could bring. So, we got together a few things. We brought kennels, blankets, toys, treats, food, leashes, and poop bags.” said Romero. The workers transformed the basement of the Camas Church of the Nazarene into a fully-functioning pet evacuation site able to accommodate up to 40 dogs, cats, chickens and, according to the Humane Society, even a goose. After many evacuated people chose to spend the night in their car, with their pets, they could come inside and share a space with their animals. “What we’re planning to do, is folks can come in, they can choose a crate that fits their pet, and if they choose to, they can bring the crate closer to their cot so they can sleep together and be able to benefit from their companionship.” said Laura Jean Skiles, the Community Solutions Manager for the Humane Society of Southwest Washington. It allows you to take that stress and just focus on your safety, on being ok, on your family, and not having to worry, ‘is my pet going to be ok in this kind of situation,’” said Skiles. The Camas Church of The Nazarene is open to the public and their pets. The Hill: Trump Officials Interfered With CDC Guidance For Political Purposes, House Panel Finds The Trump administration regularly interfered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) process for developing and issuing guidance about the coronavirus, changed scientific reports and undermined top public health officials, a congressional panel said Monday. The House select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis said interviews, emails and other documents obtained by the panel showed how political appointees in the Trump administration took control of CDC’s public communications and overruled scientists in an effort to bend the agency to Trump’s rosy outlook on the pandemic. (Weixel, 10/17) Bloomberg: Trump’s CDC Changed Covid Reports Under Political Pressure, Panel Finds The CDC bowed to the Trump administration’s demands to change the editorial process of its weekly scientific journal after warnings from then health secretary Alex Azar to “get in line,” a House investigation found. The pressure faced by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to change the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report‘s procedures was one of several instances of political interference by former President Donald Trump’s aides that the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis identified in a report released Monday. The report was provided to Bloomberg Law ahead of the official release. (Baumann, 10/17) The Washington Post: CDC Officials Describe Intense Pressure, Job Threats From Trump White House  Former CDC director Robert Redfield, former top deputy Anne Schuchat and others described how the Trump White House and its allies repeatedly “bullied” staff, tried to rewrite their publications and threatened their jobs in an attempt to align the CDC with the more optimistic view of the pandemic espoused by Donald Trump, the House select subcommittee on the coronavirus crisis concluded in a report released Monday. Several public health officials detailed a months-long campaign against Schuchat sparked by Trump appointees’ belief that her grim assessments of the pandemic reflected poorly on the president, leading Schuchat, a 32-year CDC veteran, to openly wonder if she would be fired in the summer of 2020, her colleagues told the panel. (Dorman, 10/16) Reuters: Trump Administration Blocked CDC Transit Mask Mandate, Report Shows Former President Donald Trump’s administration at a crucial time in the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 blocked the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) from adopting a federal mandate requiring face masks on airline flights and other forms of transit, a congressional report released on Monday said. Marty Cetron, a senior CDC official, is cited in the report as saying the federal public health agency began working on the proposed order in July 2020 after its experts determined that there was scientific evidence to support requiring masks in public and commercial transportation. (Shepardson, 10/17) Newsweek: Trump Admin Tried To Shelve Findings That Discredited COVID Drug: Report The administration of former President Donald Trump allegedly attempted to bury findings that discredited drugs unproven to cure COVID, according to a congressional report released Monday. The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis headed by Democratic Representative Jim Clyburn reported that scientific integrity was compromised by Trump and his White House “to serve the former president’s political goals.” (Mordowanec, 10/17) CBS News: Top CDC Scientist Said COVID-Era Health Policy Used To Expel Migrants Unfairly Stigmatized Them The U.S. government’s top public health expert on migration told Congress he refused to approve a policy allowing mass expulsions at the U.S.-Mexico border because he believed the measure, enacted by President Donald Trump and retained by President Joe Biden, unfairly stigmatized migrants as spreaders of COVID-19. U.S. Oil Service Firms’ Results To Show Impact Of Demand, Inflation – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-oil-service-firms-results-to-show-impact-of-demand-inflation-reuters/ Storage tanks for crude oil, gasoline, diesel, and other refined petroleum products are seen at the Kinder Morgan Terminal, viewed from the Phillips 66 Company’s Los Angeles Refinery in Carson, California, U.S., March 11, 2022. REUTERS/Bing Guan Oct 18 (Reuters) – Oilfield service firms are poised to deliver the strongest third quarter results in years as demand for equipment and services has risen despite supply chain snags and higher costs from inflation, according to analyst forecasts. Schlumberger (SLB.N), Halliburton (HAL.N) and others have struggled to regain pricing power after a 2016 price drop. The oil market crash during the pandemic in 2020 stifled hopes for a rebound. The lack of spending on new equipment left the market for drilling and fracking tight this year as oil prices surged and companies ran out of older gear they could cannibalize for parts. Oil prices remain near their highest levels in about eight years, spurring more producer demand for services. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “Pricing is coming through,” said Evercore ISI oilfield services analyst James West. He and others anticipate a boost from stronger international and offshore activity from deepwater projects in Guyana and Brazil. Schlumberger and Halliburton did not immediately reply to requests for comment on the extent to which they have been able to raise prices. Baker Hughes declined to comment. The international rig count rose to 879 last month, up from 787 a year ago, according to Baker Hughes. In the United States, there were 295 hydraulic fracturing spreads operating in mid-October, up 27 from a year ago, according to consultancy Primary Vision Network. That represents a utilization rate of more than 90%, Primary Vision said. Evercore’s West forecasts Schlumberger and Halliburton will top Wall Street consensus estimates, with Baker Hughes delivering in-line results after pre-announcing headwinds from currency translation and LNG facilities that delayed service work. Baker Hughes kicks off the sector’s earnings on Wednesday, followed by Schlumberger on Friday and Halliburton on Oct. 25. Schlumberger could report per share earnings of 55 cents, from 36 cents a year earlier, Halliburton a profit of 56 cents, from 28 cents a year ago, and Baker Hughes 25 cents, up from 16 cents a year ago, according to IBES Refinitiv estimates for the three. Analysts will seek evidence that oilfield companies are restaffing “especially the frac side,” said Matt Hagerty, senior energy strategist at FactSet’s BTU Analytics. Firms have been slow to add new equipment after years of oversupply and investor demands for higher returns. The Philadelphia Oil Service Index (.OSX) this summer hit its highest level since March 2020, trading around $90, but has dropped to about $68.50 on fears of a recession. In 2014, the index was $311. The oilfield sector has faced capital constraints, “supply chain issues, workforce shortages and inflation impacts,” said Leslie Beyer, CEO of the Energy Workforce & Technology Council, which represents oilfield service companies. “It will take more than one year of positive earnings to be fully healthy,” said Beyer. Oilfield service equities have rebounded from lows seen during the 2020 downturn, but remain far below peaks seen in 2014, the last time oil prices were around $100 a barrel.
