Northern Michigan Tourist Traffic On Par With Summer 2021 – Petoskey News-Review https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/northern-michigan-tourist-traffic-on-par-with-summer-2021-petoskey-news-review/ NORTHERN MICHIGAN — Going into summer 2022, Northern Michigan was expected to have another record season as the state continued to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. In some ways those expectations were met, but in others, this summer was on par with 2021. During the pandemic, Northern Michigan was a refuge for travelers in Michigan and the Midwest. With lots of outdoor activities and lodging options, many chose to vacation Up North rather than risk air travel. As travel restrictions have lifted and the vaccine has made COVID-19 less of a risk for many, more people took trips that were put off during the pandemic. More:Businesses seek student workers in order to meet summer demand While areas like Petoskey and Charlevoix didn’t have a record-breaking summer, hotels were still booked and stores and restaurants were still as busy as they were in summer 2021. Northern Michigan remains a popular travel choice even as travel elsewhere opens up. “We’ve always known that some of this rapid growth was going to slow down as travel patterns returned to normal, as people started getting on planes again and as things return to a bit of normalcy,” said Jim Powell, director of the Petoskey Area Visitors Bureau. “Generally, what I heard from our members, the lodging community, here in Petoskey or Harbor Springs and the region is that it was a good, good summer.” According to Powell, occupancy was down 2 percent for the months of June, July and August compared to the previous year. Due to rising costs, however, hotels and other forms of lodging had raised prices and that helped make up for the slight drop in occupancy. Charlevoix had a similar summer with tourist traffic leveling out a bit, but not dropping below summer 2021. Amanda Wilkin, executive director of Visit Charlevoix, said while summer took a bit of a downturn, visitation is up for the year so far.  “Overall our visitation numbers are up for the year so far, which shows that our non-peak season traffic is up,” Wilkin said in an email. “We have been very strategic in spending the bulk of our marketing fund on off-season promotion for the past five years. It is our goal to help create a sustainable year-round flow of visitor traffic because it is better for our local businesses and also a better experience for the visitor.” When travel to Northern Michigan started picking up during the pandemic, the Petoskey Regional Chamber of Commerce created posters asking visitors to be patient during a time when businesses were struggling to meet demand with a limited workforce. Other chambers in the area began to post similar messages. Subscribe: Check out our offers and read the local news that matters to you In July, during Charlevoix’s Venetian Festival, the East Park Tavern closed early after staff dealt with harassment from rude customers. According to Charlevoix Area Chamber of Commerce President Sarah Van Horn, this was the most extreme incident that she knows of, but visitors did seem to be less patient than they were the past two years. “We did still see that customers were being respectful and patient as best as they could. We also saw that some of that had worn out a little bit based on the two years previously, when pandemic restrictions were a little more visible,” Van Horn said.  “I think it was harder for people to understand the barriers that businesses faced because it wasn’t on the front lines so much. It was more with inflation costs and staffing and they might not have seen it in the terms of needing to distance tables or wear masks or that type of thing.” More:Charlevoix restaurant closes early after bad behavior during Venetian For Sault Ste. Marie, tourism has continued to grow year-round even as travel has opened up. With the last of the COVID-19 restrictions at the Canadian border lifting on Oct. 1, visitation in Sault Ste. Marie is expected to continue to rise. According to Sault Area Convention and Visitors Bureau Executive Director Linda Hoath, her office had prepared for a 3 percent increase in overnight stays in July compared to the same time in 2019, their busiest year on record. Instead, she found that overnight stays were 10 percent higher in July 2022 than in July 2019. “I was shocked at July’s (numbers), just shocked,” Hoath said. As Sault Ste. Marie closes out its busiest season and goes into fall, tourist traffic isn’t expected to lessen by much as visitors come to see the fall leaves, experience the outdoors or pass through on their way to Canada, especially now as restrictions are about to lift. “That’s going to really help the businesses in town. That’s going to be another big influx. Especially if it’s just across the river, they come over for the day, that is going to mean so much to our businesses,” Hoath said. — Contact reporter Tess Ware at tware@petoskeynews.com. UK Fiscal Watchdog To Release Analysis Of Tax-Cutting Plan 69News WFMZ-TV
UK Fiscal Watchdog To Release Analysis Of Tax-Cutting Plan 69News WFMZ-TV
UK Fiscal Watchdog To Release Analysis Of Tax-Cutting Plan – 69News WFMZ-TV https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uk-fiscal-watchdog-to-release-analysis-of-tax-cutting-plan-69news-wfmz-tv/ LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Liz Truss and her Treasury chief met with the independent Office of Budget Responsibility on Friday amid efforts to ease concerns about unfunded government tax cuts that have unleashed turmoil on financial markets. The meeting was significant because it was the government’s failure to publish the OBR’s analysis of its tax-cutting plans that spooked investors, sending the pound to a record low against the dollar earlier this week and forcing the Bank of England to intervene in the bond market to protect pension funds. The OBR promised an analysis by Oct. 7, far sooner than the date previously suggested — Nov. 23 — when the government releases more details on its economic plans. The chairman of the House of Commons’ Treasury committee said the meeting was an opportunity for the government to change course. Truss and Treasury chief Kwasi Kwarteng were likely to have “difficult” conversations with the OBR because investors want to see independent analysis showing that their plans won’t push government borrowing to unsustainable levels, said Mel Stride, a member of Truss’ Conservative Party. “The judgment so far of the markets, and indeed myself and many others, is that what was announced last Friday, unfortunately, doesn’t stack up fiscally and some changes are almost certainly going to need to be made,” Stride told the BBC. Truss defended her plan Thursday and shrugged off the market chaos, saying she was willing to make “controversial and difficult decisions” to get the U.K. economy growing. She said the problems facing the economy — namely high inflation driven by soaring energy prices — were global and spurred by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. She got a piece of good news Friday, with revised figures showing the U.K. economy grew slightly in the three months through June, indicating the country isn’t technically in a recession, with two consecutive quarters of shrinking GDP being one definition. Her government’s economic stimulus program calls for 45 billion pounds ($48 billion) of tax cuts and no spending reductions, meaning a surge of borrowing would be used to pay for the cuts that many see as benefiting the wealthy. She also has capped energy bills for households and businesses that are driving a cost-of-living crisis, though prices are still going up Saturday as natural gas prices soar. Treasury minister Andrew Griffith had played down the significance of the meeting between the government and OBR, but nonetheless described it as a “very good idea.” “Just like the independent Bank of England, they have got a really important role to play,’’ Griffith said of the OBR during an interview with Sky News. “We all want the forecasts to be as quick as they can, but also as a former finance director, I also know you want them to have the right level of detail.” The decision to meet with the OBR also was welcomed by Conservative lawmakers and senior party figures, including former Chancellor George Osborne, who oversaw the creation of the independent spending watchdog in 2010. “Turns out the credibility of the institution we created 12 years ago to bring honesty to the public finances is more enduring than that of its critics,” Osborne said on Twitter. Metaverse Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And help With Overpopulation Daily Star
Metaverse Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And help With Overpopulation Daily Star
‘Metaverse’ Children To Replace Real Kids By 2050 And ‘help With Overpopulation’ – Daily Star https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/metaverse-children-to-replace-real-kids-by-2050-and-help-with-overpopulation-daily-star/ Virtual kids born in the metaverse could become more common in the next 50 years, according to an AI expert. Author Catriona Campbell believes parents will want to care for digital children in virtual reality, using a headset to feel like they’re really there with a CGI kid. These virtual kids would be just like the real thing but could be switched off at the touch of a button, and Campbell argues they’ll help the world deal with ‘overpopulation’. READ NEXT: Mark Zuckerberg’s top secret Metaverse headset revealed after being left in hotel room In a book released this year, Campbell says a ‘Tamagotchi generation’ will be born and be available to parents for a ‘small monthly fee’. Real babies could be out of a job (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) In the book, she says: “Virtual children may seem like a giant leap from where we are now, but within 50 years technology will have advanced to such an extent that babies which exist in the metaverse are indistinct from those in the real world.” She adds: “We’re already well on our way to creating the Tamagotchi generation which, for all intents and purposes, will be ‘real’ to their parents. “On the basis that consumer demand is there, which I think it will be, AI children will become widely available for a relatively small monthly fee.” Virtual children would be available ‘for a small monthly fee’ (Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) The idea that the world will become dangerously overpopulated is not supported by data. Although the global population is set to continue increasing over the next century, it is due to eventually flatten and slow down. This is already happening in countries in the West, including Britain, which have ageing populations and declining birthrates. In the UK, that means the population is set to decline by 2025 and begin shrinking, which will lead to many unfilled jobs. Population growth tends to slow in post-industrial societies as contraception becomes more readily available and more women enter the workforce. One estimate suggests you could fit the entirety of the world’s population in an area the size of Los Angeles, although it would obviously not be very comfortable. Put simply, it’s unlikely that virtual children will replace the real deal anytime soon. 5 Things To Know Before The Stock Market Opens Friday CNBC
5 Things To Know Before The Stock Market Opens Friday – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/5-things-to-know-before-the-stock-market-opens-friday-cnbc/ Traders on the floor of the NYSE, Sept. 28, 2022. Source: NYSE Here are the most important news items that investors need to start their trading day: 1. A bang, or a whimper? The third quarter comes to a close Friday, and it couldn’t come any sooner for beaten-up stock markets. It’s been a terrible month for equities. The Federal Reserve’s policy makers made it clear they’re serious about raising rates until price increases cool down, sending bond yields surging and stocks down. The central bank’s critics say much of the turmoil is the result of the Fed waiting too long to address inflation and then doing too much, too quickly, to fight it. The economic mess in the UK and the nuclear-tinged anxiety over Russia’s war in Ukraine haven’t helped, either. Earnings season is around the corner, too, which could add even more pressure to markets that have already fallen below their previous 2022 lows. Follow live market updates here. Not great, Apple Apple CEO Tim Cook presents the new iPhone 14 at an Apple event at their headquarters in Cupertino, California, U.S. September 7, 2022.  Carlos Barria | Reuters A somewhat surprising name led Thursday’s big selloff in tech stocks: Apple. While the top-tier gadget maker is down a whopping 20% so far this year, it has outperformed the tech-loaded Nasdaq, which has fallen an even-worse 31% since the end of 2021. Technology stocks are typically considered riskier and more vulnerable to interest rate increases, so when there’s volatility investors head to safer securities. In this case, it was a downgrade from Bank of America that triggered the decline in Apple, which brought other big names down with it, such as Alphabet and Microsoft. “Shares have outperformed significantly YTD … and have been perceived as a relative safe haven,” BofA analyst Wamsi Mohan wrote Thursday, in downgrading Apple to a hold. “However, we see risk to this outperformance over the next year, as we expect material negative est. revisions driven by weaker consumer demand.” Still, a vast majority of analysts on the Street have Apple at a buy rating. Toyota CEO stands by EV plan Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corp., gestures while posing for photographs during a news conference at the company’s showroom in Tokyo, Japan, Dec. 14, 2021. Toyota announced plans for its EV vehicles. Kiyoshi Ota | Bloomberg | Getty Images Akio Toyoda has heard your complaints that his company, Toyota, isn’t moving fast enough to go all-in on electric vehicles, but he’s not budging. “That’s our strategy and we’re sticking to it,” the CEO said. While Ford and General Motors have been telling investors, customers and politicians alike that they’re going all-electric, Toyota is taking an all-of-the-above approach. That means producing gas-electric hybrids, like the Prius, as well as hydrogen-electric vehicles and plugins. The company has increased investments in electric vehicles, but it doesn’t view EVs as the only solution. “Everything is going to be up to the customers to decide,” Toyoda told reporters Thursday. 4. Nike has an inventory problem A man wearing a protective face mask walks past a Nike brand store central in Kyiv, Ukraine December 10, 2020. Valentyn Ogirenko | Reuters It looks like people will be getting a lot of steeply marked-down Nike gear for holiday gifts this year. The sneaker and sporting goods company said in its earnings report Thursday that it’s overwhelmed with products from multiple seasons because of supply chain problems. Some shipments intended for earlier seasons showed up after taking too long, Nike said, while the company is also getting products for the holiday shopping season, which it ordered early to hedge against shipping delays. Overall, the company’s inventory jumped 44% in the prior quarter, and by 65% in North America, its largest market. So that’s left Nike with no choice but to “aggressively liquidate” big chunks of its inventory, said CFO Matthew Friend. Nike isn’t the only one in selling mode: Shares of the company fell in off-hours trading. More from CNBC PRO: Nike results offer clues about the strong dollar and earnings season 5. Ian strengthens after pummeling Florida A man takes photos of boats damaged by Hurricane Ian in Fort Myers, Florida, on September 29, 2022. Giorgio Viera | AFP | Getty Images Ian became a hurricane again after it barreled through Florida and hit the Atlantic Ocean. Now the storm is on a collision course with South Carolina, where it’s projected to make landfall Friday afternoon. Parts of the state could receive 8 inches of rain while suffering from severe flooding and winds, weather authorities said. Ian has already left a wide path of destruction in Florida, and knocked out powered to millions. President Joe Biden warned of a “substantial loss of life.” Images of Fort Myers, Florida, were particularly horrifying: Lingering floods, boats left on streets, houses smashed. “Watching the water from my condo in the heart of downtown, watching that water rise and just flood out all the stores on the first floor, it was heartbreaking,” Fort Myers Mayor Kevin Anderson told NBC’s “Today.” – CNBC’s Alex Harring, Jordan Novet, Michael Wayland and Lillian Rizzo contributed to this report. — Sign up now for the CNBC Investing Club to follow Jim Cramer’s every stock move. Tamadoge – Meme Coin Giving Away $1 Million and Hosting Frequent Competitions Meme coin Tamadoge (TAMA) is a play-to-earn (P2E) crypto project and one of the best NFT games out right now. It tokenizes in-game assets to make them easily tradable and verifiable. Many crypto enthusiasts have praised the project as being one of the best crypto games on the market thanks to its committed team and strong concept.  The Tamadoge game is built around a tailor-made Metaverse world commonly referred to as the Tamaverse. In this virtual land, players are able to train NFT-based pets. In order to rank up a pet, the player must interact with it and provide it with food, toys, and cosmetics, all of which are available from the in-game store.  When a player improves the ranking of their pet, they will receive Dogepoints. The more points a player has, the higher they will rank on the in-game leaderboard. As the highest-rated players will receive the greatest share of the rewards pool, there is a huge amount of incentive for people to level up their pets.  Synergizing perfectly with the leveling system, 5% of the revenue generated from the in-game store is burned. This means that by improving their pets by purchasing items from the store, a player also reduces the total supply of TAMA, helping to further boost their earnings.  Following one of the best presales of 2022, and having raised $19M, the TAMA token was recently listed on the OKX centralized exchange (CEX) and the OKX DEX (for US residents). To celebrate this achievement, the team has launched a $1 million competition with 100,000 prizes up for grabs. Just register with OKX, trade TAMA/USDT, and complete a few social actions to win $10 sent directly to a crypto wallet.  Tamadoge is one of the best crypto games available right now. The project has been enjoying huge demand and with the release of the Tamaverse and Tamadoge pets both slated for Q4 2022, we could see TAMA explode sooner rather than later. Join the Tamadoge Telegram to stay informed about the project’s latest updates.  Buy TAMA on OKX CEX Buy TAMA on OKX DEX 2. Battle Infinity – Popular P2E DeFi Ecosystem Rewarding its Supporters Battle Infinity (IBAT) is a new crypto project that has been making waves in the industry thanks to its unique ecosystem comprising a fantasy sports platform, an NFT marketplace, a decentralized exchange, a staking platform, a collection of some of the best NFT games, and even a Metaverse arena.  The project has been performing well in recent months. After selling out its 16,500 BNB presale, beating expectations by 65-days, the IBAT token went on to climb by around 400% compared to its presale price after getting listed on PancakeSwap. With statistics like these, IBAT could be the best crypto to buy right now., Following the release of the IBAT staking platform, there has been a lot of focus on the Battle Infinity ecosystem, and for good reason. Out of all the crypto tokens on the market, IBAT is one of the top in terms of potential growth. As the project’s core features begin to release, we could see the token skyrocket. To reward its supporters, Battle Infinity has been hosting giveaways on the IBAT Telegram channel. The prizes are typically worth between $10 to $500 and can usually be won by completely specific social actions (e.g. following the IBAT Twitter, sharing a post, etc). With new draws being periodically announced, it’s worth following the Telegram closely to maximize the chances of winning.  Battle Infinity is an extremely interesting project that has the potential to grow exponentially in the coming months. The release of the project’s fantasy sports league as well as its other primary features will likely cause demand for the IBAT token to boom so it’s worth watching Battle Infinity closely and keeping an eye on the project’s Telegram in order to not miss the next best crypto giveaway. Visit Battle Infinity  3. Lucky Block – NFT Competition Platform Hosting both Paid And Free Prize Draws Next on our list of the best crypto giveaways is Lucky Block (LBLOCK), a crypto-powered platform created to provide a fair and simple way for people to enter NFT-based competitions with huge prizes.  Lucky Block has created a simple-to-use platform that allows anyone to enter a competition by purchasing an NFT from Launchpad.xyz. Each prize draw is linked to a specific NFT, with the price and available quantity of each proportional to the potential jackpot. Some of the most exciting prizes include $1 million in Bitcoin, a house, and a luxury vehicle.  Even after a competition has been concluded, Lucky Block NFT still provides its owner with the ability to earn free crypto rewards every single day. This is a huge bonus and ensures that the collection remains valuable for the long term rather than being solely used to enter the prize draws.  In addition to the platform’s paid competitions, Lucky Block also gives back to its fans by hosting free crypto giveaways. The last giveaway hosted by Lucky Block had a grand prize of $2,500 and less than 2,500 entries, meaning participants had a far higher chance of winning compared to other giveaways.  Lucky Block is in an interesting spot. Anticipation has been building surrounding the launch of the LBLOCK burn program (September 30th, 2022) and with the V1 to V2 token bridge to launch soon after (October 3rd, 2022), the price of LBLOCK could skyrocket. We’ve got a great Lucky Block price prediction article for investors interested in LBLOCK. Visit Lucky Block 4. Binance – Leading Exchange Hosting a Giveaway for Binance Card Users The world’s largest centralized exchange (by volume), Binance has a penchant for hosting some of the best crypto giveaways out there. Almost every few days, it seems that Binance has launched another competition, ranging in style from crypto airdrops to online lottery-style competitions. With Binance hosting crypto giveaways so frequently, it’s worth keeping an eye on its socials.   We mentioned, Binance tends to host frequent free crypto giveaways. The exchange is currently rewarding users that order a Binance card with a 5 BUSD voucher. Even existing card holders can win a small kickback for transacting using the card. Furthermore, one lucky entrant will win a voucher for an entire Bitcoin, making the competition potentially rather lucrative.  With Binance being a favorite trading platform among crypto enthusiasts, there’s no real downside to joining in on the giveaways hosted by the exchange as many investors already have an account with the platform.  Visit Binance Now 5. KuCoin – Win Crypto by Creating KuCoin-Related Memes KuCoin is another popular exchange that frequently rewards its users by hosting exclusive competitions with various prizes. The exchange has a huge user base consisting of more than 10 million investors and traders around the globe. As such, to ensure that each competition is fair, KuCoin will often host region-specific competitions reducing the difficulty of winning.  Out of all of the platforms we’ve looked at, KuCoin hosts perhaps the greatest quantity of giveaways. Currently, there are three active competitions. One rewards people for staking crypto on the exchange, another rewards users for trying futures trading, and the final KuCoin prize draw allows people to earn crypto by creating memes related to the exchange. While the competitions KuCoin hosts tend to have more specific entry requirements than most, the platform more than makes up for this with the sheer quantity of prize draws it hosts. New competitions are typically announced on the news section of KuCoin or on the company’s socials so it’s worth keeping up to date with more.  Visit KuCoin Now 6. Crypto.com – $10,000 Ethereum Giveaway for Anyone Trading ETH In addition to being home to some of the best play-to-earn games on the market, Crypto.com also hosts some of the best crypto giveaways in the industry. The exchange, which provides hundreds of the best altcoins is well known for rewarding its users through a variety of means, most commonly, staking and cashback rewards.  The most recent prize draw hosted by Crypto.com is related to the highly anticipated Ethereum merge. in order to support the upgr...

U.S. Investors Brace For More Wild Market Gyrations After Dizzying Q3 – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-investors-brace-for-more-wild-market-gyrations-after-dizzying-q3-reuters/ NEW YORK, Sept 30 (Reuters) – In a year of wild market swings, the third quarter of 2022 was a time when events took a truly extraordinary turn. As the Federal Reserve ratcheted up its monetary policy tightening to tame the worst inflation in decades, U.S. Treasury yields shot to their highest levels in more than a decade and stocks reversed a summer rally to plumb fresh depths. The S&P 500 (.SPX) is down nearly 24% year-to-date, while yields on the benchmark 10 year Treasury note , which move inversely to bond prices, recently hit their highest level since 2008. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Outside the United States, the soaring dollar spurred big declines in global currencies, pushing Japan to support the yen for the first time in years. A slump in British government bond prices, meanwhile, forced the Bank of England to carry out temporary purchases of long-dated gilts. Many investors are looking to the next three months with trepidation, betting the selloff in U.S. stocks will continue until there are signs the Fed is winning its battle against inflation. Yet the last quarter of the year has often been a beneficial time for U.S. equities, spurring hopes that markets may have already seen the worst of the selloff. Reuters Graphics PASS THE DIP The strategy of buying stock market dips yielded rich rewards for investors in the past but failed badly in 2022: the S&P 500 has rallied by 6% or more four times this year and went on to make a fresh low in each instance. The third quarter saw the index rise by nearly 14% before reversing to make a fresh two-year low in September after investors recalibrated their expectations for even more aggressive Fed tightening. Buying the dip in stocks has failed badly this year LOOK OUT BELOW? With several big Wall Street banks expecting the benchmark index to end the year below current levels – Bank of America and Goldman Sachs both recently published year-end targets of 3,600 – the outlook for dip-buying remains murky. In addition, the current bear market, which has so far lasted 268 days and notched a peak-to-trough decline of about 24%, is still relatively short and shallow compared with past drops. Since 1950, the average bear market has lasted 391 days with an average peak-to-trough drop of 35.6%, according to Yardeni Research. S&P 500’s drawdowns from most recent peak over the last 50 years LOOK TO BONDS Though equities have been volatile, the gyrations in bond markets have been comparatively worse. The ICE BofAML U.S. Bond Market Option Volatility Estimate Index (.MOVE) shot to its highest level since March 2020 as the ICE BofA US Treasury index (.MERG0Q0) is on track for its biggest annual drop on record. By comparison, the Cboe Volatility Index (.VIX) – the so-called Wall Street “fear gauge” – has failed to scale its March peak. Some investors believe stock turbulence will continue until bond markets calm down. “I think there is a good scenario where once we get through the bond market violence, we get to a more tradable bottom (for stocks),” said Michael Purves, chief executive at Tallbacken Capital Advisors in New York. Bond volatility expectations have risen to multi-year highs while the VIX has remained relatively muted …AND THE DOLLAR Soaring U.S. interest rates, a relatively robust American economy and investors’ reach for safe haven amidst a rise in financial market volatility has boosted the U.S. dollar – to the detriment of other global currencies. The greenback is up about 7% for the quarter against a basket of currencies and stands near its highest level since May 2002. The dollar’s strength has the Bank of Japan to shore up the yen through interventions while also presenting an earnings headwind for U.S. corporates. “Market risk-takers are grappling with the double-barreled threat of persistent dollar strength and dramatically higher interest rates,” Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital, said in a note. Reuters Graphics EARNINGS TEST Third quarter earnings may present another obstacle to markets, as companies factor in everything from dollar-fueled currency headwinds to supply chain issues. Analysts have become more downbeat on third quarter profit growth, with consensus estimates falling to 4.6% from 7.2% in early August, according to Refinitiv IBES. So far, that is only slightly worse than the median 2.2 percentage point decline ahead of reporting periods historically, yet warnings from companies such as FedEX (FDX.N) and Ford (F.N) have hinted at the possibility of more pain to come. Reuters Graphics ‘TIS THE SEASON The calendar may offer weary stock investors some hope. The fourth quarter is historically the best period for returns for major U.S. stock indexes, with the S&P 500 (.SPX) averaging a 4.2% gain since 1949, according to the Stock Trader’s Almanac. Legacy Technology Continues To Be A Significant Pressure Point For The Industry, ALFI Panelists Say – Asset Servicing Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/legacy-technology-continues-to-be-a-significant-pressure-point-for-the-industry-alfi-panelists-say-asset-servicing-times/ Legacy technology continues to be a significant pressure point for the industry, ALFI panelists say The issue of legacy technology continues to be a significant pressure point for the industry, agreed panelists discussing digital transformation at this year’s Association of the Luxembourg Fund Industry (ALFI) Global Distribution Conference. The panel, entitled “How can evolving digital transformation enable retail investors’ cost-effective access to investment solutions?”, highlighted that providing a digital platform that can adapt to local legislations and combine new product features is a goal that the industry should be working towards. Connecting new technology to legacy systems, many of which are up to 20 years’ old, breaks the digitisation of systems. The ecosystem must be interoperable and encompass many technologies, the group added. Simplifying asset management and making it more accessible is essential, as is educating and interesting young investors, who are more likely to lean towards crypto markets, said Emanuelle Pecenicic, head of digital propositions and partnerships at APACxJ Fidelity. She also suggested the funds industry should follow crypto’s lead — using social media, the metaverse, and a focus on community to market to the younger generation. Olivier Portenseigne, CEO of FundsDLT, agreed, and emphasised the importance of making the process easier for ‘digitally-native’ audiences of both asset and wealth managers. Developing direct-to-client (D2C) products removes distributors from the process, something that Portenseigne sees as a benefit. Questioning whether they are effective in their roles, he argued that their absence will allow asset managers to better understand their customers. However, he also mentioned that due to some asset managers’ lack of brand image, they may wish to keep B2B2C distribution strategies. Charles Sayac, head of sales for wealth and distribution at Amundi Technology, added that many asset managers are working alongside distributors to create new solutions for retail investors. Sayac also reframed Pecenicic’s vision of ‘cannibalisation’ as creating a new distribution channel, complementing rather than superseding existing structures. Challenges around implementing such a service were also discussed. Closing the panel, the three concluded that now is the moment to go digital, emphasising the increased transparency and potential for personalisation that digital transformations offer.

Revenge Travel To Avenge Oneself Of Isolation From The Pandemic ETHospitality
Revenge Travel To Avenge Oneself Of Isolation From The Pandemic ETHospitality
Revenge Travel To Avenge Oneself Of Isolation From The Pandemic – ETHospitality https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/revenge-travel-to-avenge-oneself-of-isolation-from-the-pandemic-ethospitality/ Arun K Chittilapilly Being locked behind doors for over 2 years has given birth to a rebel in everyone’s hearts. They ‘want to break free. God knows they want to break free…’ Travel in general is to evoke positive emotions and experiences in travellers for reasons like relieving stress or making new experiences and memories. Gradually as nations open their borders to travellers, there started a phenomenon that was fuelled by frustrated social media: Revenge travel. Some might tell you that revenge is best served cold, but what about on a secluded island, in the middle of an untouched jungle? Vacations as we knew them Vacation is a period spent away from home or business in travel or recreation to recoup from the daily stresses of life. Vacations People frequently go on vacation for certain festivals, celebrations, or holiday observances. Vacations are mostly taken with family and friends. The idea of vacationing is a relatively new innovation that has evolved over the past 200 years. In the past, the concept of vacation travel was a luxury that only those with money could enjoy. With transportation becoming easier, and roads/ motorways becoming affordable, people started travelling for leisure not just work. Taking a vacation from labour for purposes other than the weekly observance of the Sabbath was frowned upon in early American Puritan society. However, a subsequent religious movement that promoted spiritual retreat and pleasure was the driving force behind the contemporary idea of vacation. The working class and middle class adopted the idea of taking breaks from work on occasion. With the emergence of this social media trend and the expansion of armchair travel to far-flung places, there has arisen a new breed of travelers seeking their own share of travel and doing justice to their wandering selves to make up for the time they lost during the lockdown. The Union Health Ministry has issued a warning against this specific phenomenon known as “revenge tourism,” as hundreds of tourist swarm Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand in an effort to escape the monotonous life that the second wave of the coronavirus lockdown brought about. Social distancing has gone for a toss as people began ‘running to the hills…’ Data from Himachal Pradesh suggests that, in a typical holiday season, tourism had increased the population in the state by as much as 40 percent. Under those circumstances, the third wave peaked by up to 47 percent during the holiday season. According to information provided by the Airports Authority of India, domestic travel in Goa increased 14% between December 2020 and December 2021, from 715,293 to 815,935 (before the pandemic). These numbers suggest that revenge tourism is real and holds out hope for the air travel and hospitality sector, which was badly battered by the pandemic. The concept of revenge travel The pent-up fury in individuals that built up over two years of missing out on the opportunity to discover new places and embark on adventures eventually gave rise to the phrase “revenge travel,” and vacation vengeance became a thing to make up for the lost time. We are experiencing weird times and are still getting used to the new way of life brought on by this pandemic. Travelers are leaving for vacations in surrounding locations to avenge travel, which suggests that the travel spirit in India is very strong. In recent years, the hybrid model of work and the desire to travel have paved the way for workstations, allowing people to strike a balance between pleasure and business travel. With the concept of staycations and workcations in existence, travelers are increasingly seeking destinations that allow access to nature, fuelling demand for rare, unexplored, secluded, and distinctive destinations. A typical trend of preferences among travelers who rent out properties includes flexible rental providers, followed by high-speed internet access, desk and office spaces, laptop-friendly surfaces, and so on. The evolution of a traveller Travellers and traveling as an activity have transformed over time. Back in the day, there were travellers who were made to experience. This usually happens with kids when they are taken to a park or a museum The factor of enjoyment and safety are under the control of the person who takes you to the locations. There are times when travellers are subjected to certain experiences. For instance, when riders sit on a roller coaster and that ride ‘happens’ to riders as they take the backseat and experience it. The factor of enjoyment and safety is under the control of the person who operates the ride. With the advent of the pandemic, travellers are inclined towards experiencing travel themselves. They go for hikes; they go for solo trips, and they made things ‘happen’ for themselves with their safety and enjoyment in their hands. Revenge travellers often want to make things happen for themselves to make up for the time they missed during the peak of the pandemic. The link between COVID & revenge travel Part of the difficulty is that there isn’t a single effective method to define the present state of global travel. Because the pandemic is still going strong in many nations, the term “post-epidemic travel” is deceptive. Varied countries and regions have different timelines for lifting all entry restrictions, with some still being very restricted or even closed to foreign tourists. According to a report, though 52% of the population is vaccinated and most Indians are vaccinated by now, Azerbaijan hasn’t opened its borders to travellers yet. One thing is certain: when vaccinations become available and doors reopen, people across the world are anxious to go back on the road. Post the second wave, after the vaccines worked their magic, vengeful travellers set out on their adventures. Travellers all over the world are now planning longer, further, and more luxurious vacations in response to the dreary and lengthy coronavirus quarantine. According to a recent AltoVita analysis, the flexible-rentals market following COVID-19 discovered that 68 percent of the flexible-rental sector is witnessing a surge in demand for prolonged stays, whereas 59 percent is seeing an increase in demand for large rooms. The findings also reveal another pattern. Religious sites were eagerly visited by many people. Air passenger counts surpassed pre-COVID-19 levels for the major holy sites Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh and Shirdi in Maharashtra. Tirupati saw a growth of 15.7 percent, while Shirdi saw a surge of 28.8 percent. Whenever COVID-19 case numbers plummet in the country, many people have made the trip. Nothing has been a deal-breaker for the traveler, not even the air bubble to the Maldives or Goa, immunisation records, or the proof of negative test results. If we must endure the pandemic for a prolonged period, this is a reasonable indicator of the times to come on the other side of the pandemic or in between waves. The one-day escapade Travellers who are swamped with work while working from home, often take the smallest of opportunities to venture out and take a break. They wait for the weekends or even better festive weekends when they can take a trip outside the city, away from the city hustle. The duration of these trips varies from a day to 2-3 days at a stretch. This getaway helps them relieve themselves of frustrations of daily life and the isolation of 5 days of working non-stop. The one-day trip is quite popular among youngsters as they visit places close by that are yet to be explored by tourists. Otherwise, they also take trips to amusement parks, wildlife national parks, go restaurant hopping or pub hopping. It generally depends on what helps them blow off steam after a tiresome week. This is unquestionably fantastic news for the travel and tourism, hotel, and aviation industries. The ‘sold out’ signs ought to appear again sooner than one may think. Pinch-hitter Evan Longoria had a go-ahead, two-run single in the eighth inning and the San Francisco Giants went on to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2. Brandon Crawford led off the Giants eighth with a single against Luis Frias and advanced to second on Cooper Hummel’s passed ball. One out later, Jason Vosler walked, and another passed ball moved the runners to second and third. Pinch-hitter Wilmer Flores walked to load the bases and Reyes Moronta relieved Frias. Longoria’s line single to left scored the Giants’ first two runs after they had left 10 runners on base without scoring in the first seven innings. St. Louis Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols hit his 700th career home run, becoming the fourth player to reach the milestone in major league history. The 42-year-old Pujols connected for his second home run of the game, a three-run drive against Los Angeles Dodgers reliever Phil Bickford in the fourth inning. The ball landed in the first few rows of the left-field pavilion at Dodger Stadium. It was same location where homer No. 699 landed in the third inning off left-hander Andrew Heaney. With the drive in the final days of his last big league season, Pujols joined Barry Bonds, who had 762 homers, Hank Aaron with 755 and Babe Ruth at 714 in one of baseball’s most exclusive clubs. The Cardinals beat the Dodgers 11-0. The Phoenix Suns are bringing back most of their star players in an effort to win an elusive NBA title. One man who apparently won’t be along on the journey is team owner Robert Sarver. The Suns met in downtown Phoenix for media day less than a week after the embattled Sarver announced his intention to sell the team. Sarver was suspended one year and fined $10 million by the NBA over workplace misconduct that included racist speech and hostile behavior toward employees. All-Star Devin Booker, guard Chris Paul and coach Monty Williams all said reading the final report on Sarver’s conduct was difficult.

Alexa responds to voice commands, and can talk back to you. She can perform thousands of different tasks, including telling you about the news or weather. But she can do more complex things too, like ordering a pizza or arranging an Uber taxi pick-up. To activate Alexa, you need to say “Alexa” to an Amazon Echo speaker. India Freezes Bitcoin At Binance Amid Investigation Involving Crypto Exchange Wazirx – Regulation Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/india-freezes-bitcoin-at-binance-amid-investigation-involving-crypto-exchange-wazirx-regulation-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ India’s Enforcement Directorate (ED) says it has frozen more than 77.6 bitcoins that were transferred to Binance from Indian crypto exchange Wazirx. The freeze is part of a money laundering investigation into a mobile gaming application. Indian Authority Freezes Bitcoin Held at Crypto Exchange Binance India’s Directorate of Enforcement (ED) announced Wednesday that it has frozen 77.62710139 bitcoins under the country’s Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). The ED is the Indian government’s law enforcement and economic intelligence agency. The freeze is part of the ED’s investigation into a mobile gaming application called E-nuggets. According to the announcement, the cryptocurrency was transferred from Wazirx, a popular Indian exchange, to Binance. The ED also tweeted a summary of its action. The law enforcement agency explained that “Aamir Khan, S/o Nesar Ahmed Khan launched a mobile gaming application namely E-Nuggets, which was designed for the purpose of defrauding [the] public,” adding: After collecting seizable amount of money from the public, all of a sudden withdrawal from the said app was stopped on one pretext or the other. Thereafter, all data including profile information was wiped off from the said app servers. The ED explained that its investigations have revealed that the accused transferred part of the illegally earned funds overseas via the Indian crypto exchange Wazirx. The accused allegedly opened a dummy account in the name of “Sima Naskar (Proprietor of M/s Pixal Design)” with Wazirx and used it to purchase cryptocurrencies, the ED further described, elaborating: Thereafter the said crypto currencies were further transferred to another account in another crypto exchange, namely Binance. “The balance of said transferred cryptocurrencies i.e. 77.62710139 bitcoins [equivalent to USD 1,573,466 (Rs 12.83 crore approximately)] at Binance crypto exchange has been freezed,” the ED wrote. Binance was believed to have acquired Wazirx in 2019. However, Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) recently said that the acquisition “was never completed,” emphasizing that “Binance has never — at any point — owned any shares of Zanmai Labs, the entity operating Wazirx.” The ED froze the bank assets of Wazirx worth more than $8 million in August. However, earlier this month, Wazirx said that its bank accounts have been unfrozen. Following Wazirx, the ED froze crypto and bank assets worth $46 million of Vauld, a crypto platform backed by Peter Thiel. In August, the agency searched crypto exchange Coinswitch Kuber. However, the CEO of the exchange said that it was not related to money laundering investigations. What do you think about the ED freezing bitcoin held at crypto exchange Binance? Defense Leaders Look To Improve U.S-Philippine Interoperability – Department Of Defense https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/defense-leaders-look-to-improve-u-s-philippine-interoperability-department-of-defense/ Pledging to strengthen the partnership between longtime allies, Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III and Jose C. Faustino Jr., officer-in-charge of the Philippine Department of National Defense, met at Camp Smith, Hawaii. The talks between the two defense leaders are based on the shared vision “of an open secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific, free from coercion or bullying,” Austin said during remarks after the meeting. “The United States remains unwavering in our support for a strong and independent Philippines that can defend its sovereignty, ensure prosperity for its people and strengthen security in the region.”  The U.S. military works closely with the Philippines. An example of this is the extensive exercise program. Austin said the two countries participate in more than 300 exercises annually that range in size from the huge Balikatan exercise to port visits to exchanges of experts. “This cooperation goes on every day, and it supports our alliance and our obligations under the mutual defense treaty,” he said. All of this is covered under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement signed in 2014. “Our U.S. and Philippine Visiting Forces Agreement allows us to continue working closely together and it lets us respond quickly to disasters and crises,” the secretary said.   “Our two countries are working together to reach a common understanding of the importance of our defense alliances and what it means to recognize each other as equal partners in advancing our respective countries interests and in promoting peace and prosperity in the region,” Faustino said.  The alliance, though, is deeper than simply the mutual defense treaty, Austin said. There are profound bonds between the people of the Philippines and the United States. “This includes strong friendships between our countries’ uniformed personnel and our veteran communities, and our proud diaspora communities immeasurably strengthen our two proud democracies and our partnership,” he said.   The United States and the Philippines have a long history together. “We fought together, we trained together,” Austin said. “We are allies, … but we consider ourselves to be more family than anything else. And I’m proud to say … that I cannot imagine a day where the United States and the Philippines aren’t allies. It is who we are.”  Faustino and Austin said the priority areas for the alliance included strengthening mutual defense treaty commitments, enhancing maritime cooperation and building on the mutual defense posture. They also said it was necessary to improve interoperability and information sharing.   “By deepening our cooperation and modernizing our alliances, we can help secure the Philippines’ future, tackle regional challenges and promote peace and security in the Indo-Pacific,” the secretary said.

From Throne Speech To Tech Speech “Techrede” – Mirage News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/from-throne-speech-to-tech-speech-techrede-mirage-news/ The Technology Drivers launched Techrede 2022. The Technology Drivers are a group of ambitious, socially engaged students from the 4 Technical Universities in Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and Wageningen; an initiative of the 4TU.Federation. State Secretary of Infrastructure and Water Management, Vivianne Heijnen, watched the Techrede and praised the usefulness and necessity of the involvement of the Voice of the Future in the debate around societal challenges and driving technological innovation. The Drivers are committed to the same themes as the cabinet, but above all they want to build momentum. – Unfortunately, your cookie settings do not allow videos to be displayed. – check your settings Last week was the week of the Throne Speech, containing the government’s plans for the coming year. Meaningful plans that can make a difference. At the same time, the feeling prevails that the plans are still too high-minded and focused more on the longer term than the short term. And it is precisely in that short term that many opportunities lie. State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen after viewing the Techrede: “Great to see that the new generation is working on smart solutions to make the world a better place. The Technology Drivers show that you can make an impact by helping that whole chain of people who also all have to participate. Good to get everyone involved, not just producers and enterprises, but also consumers. How do you ensure that you convey information about the environmental impact of products to consumers in an accessible way? That’s where the materials passport can be of help!” With an eye on the short term and the how-to of accelerating transitions, a group of ambitious, socially engaged students from the 4 Technical Universities in Delft, Eindhoven, Twente and Wageningen have been working on projects to achieve societal impact. In the Techrede, the Technology Drivers talk about the actions that have already been taken over the past year and call for concrete actions that politicians can start immediately. What can you expect from the Techrede? The Techrede is an approximately 20-minute video covering the following topics: To complete the plastic cycle, we need to go back to a much more limited number of plastics on the market. Consumers play a key role in bringing about this movement: with transparent information, people are more likely to choose packaging that is easy to recycle. With six concrete recommendations, the Voice of the Future makes its voice heard on the role of hydrogen in the energy transition. A lot of political movement and courage is needed to accelerate the transition with innovation. Prevention in healthcare, including through technological innovation, should be rewarded. With Zorgverzekeraars Nederland, the Technology Drivers worked on steps towards a future-proof healthcare system. How do we ensure that citizens understand where our food comes from, what it takes to produce it and how to optimise sustainability in our agricultural sector? Education is the answer: by having co-developed an education module, we inform the young generation. More knowledge and better choices leads to a healthy social debate. /Public Release. UK Economy Grows By 0.2% Reversing Initial Contraction Estimate – Sky News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/uk-economy-grows-by-0-2-reversing-initial-contraction-estimate-sky-news/ Britain’s economy grew by 0.2% in the three months to June reversing the initial estimate of a 0.1% contraction, official figures show. The upward revision of the second quarter GDP by the Office for National Statistics implies the UK is not currently in recession, as predicted by the Bank of England earlier this month. Quarter of NHS trusts offering food banks to staff – Economy latest A technical recession is when the economy sees two consecutive quarters of decline. ONS chief economist Grant Fitzner said: “These improved figures show the economy grew in the second quarter, revised up from a small fall. “They also show that, while household savings fell back in the most recent quarter, households saved more than we previously estimated during and after the pandemic.” The ONS said was driven by upwards improvements for the health and financial sectors. The ONS revised down its estimate for Britain’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, reflecting a bigger hit to the economy than first thought in 2020 when health lockdowns shut down businesses across the country. It said: “The level of real GDP is now estimated to be 0.2% below where it was pre-coronavirus at quarter 4 2019, downwardly revised from previous estimates of 0.6% above.” The ONS said it now believed the UK economy shrank by 11% in the year coronavirus struck the country, a more severe contraction than the previous estimate of a 9.8% hit. Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player 2:46 Chancellor ‘sticking with plan’ Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said the figures suggested the damage inflicted to the economy’s ability to grow by COVID-19 and Brexit was even larger than previously thought. “These revisions will compel the Office for Budget Responsibility to revise down further its estimates for future potential GDP,” he said. The latest data comes in the face of the chaos on the financial markets and fears of rocketing mortgage bills triggered by the government’s tax cutting mini-budget. The turmoil has put the country’s large current account deficit into new focus. The current account gap in the April-June period shrank to £33.8bn. Economists had predicted a deficit of around £44bn. The shortfall was smaller than a £43.9bn deficit in the first quarter which was revised down from an earlier estimate in part due to energy companies, buoyed by surging prices, making more profit abroad than initially thought. The January-March deficit remained the biggest on record, the ONS said.

Early cases show that courts will apply similar scrutiny as for other software-related technologies, where VR-related patents will need to satisfy current patent eligibility standards, e.g., by showing an “improvement” to underlying computing technology. **** The “Metaverse” is an expansive online world that can be experienced via multiple technological platforms – from a screen of a mobile device to the lens of a virtual reality (VR) system. VR systems typically comprise 3D-based software that controls a VR device, such as a VR headset. A popular example of a VR headset is the Oculus series of headsets as provided by Reality Labs and its parent company Meta Platforms. Patenting VR Technology Given that VR is fundamentally a software technology, how do courts analyze VR-related patents? As for other software technologies, it is expected that VR patents will need to satisfy current patent eligibility standards required under 35 U.S.C. § 101 and pursuant to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank International. See Are Software Inventions Patentable? One way is to argue that a VR invention provides an “improvement” to underlying technology compared to the prior art. See How to Patent Software Inventions: Show an “Improvement.” The below example case explores how demonstrating an “improvement” can overcome a patent eligibility challenge for a VR-related patent. Example Patent Case Involving VR technology Early cases show that courts will apply similar scrutiny for VR-related patents as for other software-related technologies, where VR-related patents will need to satisfy current patent eligibility standards, e.g., by showing an “improvement” to underlying computing technology. In one example case, AR Design Innovations LLC (“AR Design”) asserted a VR-related patent against several furniture manufacturers, including Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc.’s (“Ashley”), La-Z-Boy Incorporated’s (“La-Z-Boy”), and Ethan Allen Interiors, Inc. (“Ethen Allen”) (collectively “Defendants”). The cases were ultimately consolidated into a single action. See AR Design Innovations LLC v. Ashley Furniture Indus., Inc., 4:20-cv-392 (E.D. Tex. filed May 12, 2020). The patent owner, AR Design, had asserted U.S. Pat. No. 7,277,572 (the “‘572 patent”) titled “Three-Dimensional Interior Design System.” The ‘572 patent describes a “software application configured to reside on a client computer, which is capable of manipulating 3-D object representations in-situ with a user-selected or user-generated interior design scene, and rendering photographic quality perspective images of the composite scene. ‘572 Patent at 1:8-13. Defendants (the furniture manufacturers) had each developed mobile software applications that allowed customers to generate and render photorealistic 3D objects (e.g., furniture) within a 3D scene (e.g., a room). A user could rearrange or edit the objects and scenes in real time. Patent Owner, AR Design, alleged that the Defendants’ respective software infringed at least claim 1 of the ‘572 patent. Claim 1 described a VR-related invention involving a client-server computing environment for rendering 3D scenes: A method in a client-server computing environment for generating and rendering a photorealistic three-dimensional (3D) perspective view of a 3D object selectively positioned within a 3D scene, the method comprising: (a) communicably accessing a server with a client; (b) operating with the client, a client application configured for scene editing and rendering, including a graphical user interface (GUI); (c) displaying a 3D scene with the GUI; (d) configuring the 3D scene for being selectively displayed in a plurality of views; (e) retrieving at least one 3D object from the server; (f) importing the 3D object into the 3D scene to generate a composite; (g) manipulating the 3D object within the composite for placement and orientation; (h) rendering a 3D image of the composite at the client; (i) selectively reconfiguring the 3D image in real time; (j) applying luminosity characteristics to the 3D image; and (k) rendering, with the client application, a photorealistic 3D view of the composite image, including the luminosity characteristics. Claim 1 covers an embodiment for furniture manufacturers and sellers to “showcase their products.” ‘572 Patent at 7:1-2. In particular, the embodiment allows end users to see a manufacturer’s products in full, realistic, 3D with the ability to change the texture (textile covering, finish, etc.) of the product” and “may allow a furniture manufacturer to exhibit their sofas or chairs covered in all of the different materials offered by them.” Id. at 7:2-7. Figure 28 of the ‘572 Patent depicts an example embodiment as a high-resolution rendering of a 3D “furniture object” (a bed) positioned in a virtual environment (a bedroom): At the outset of the case, the Defendants filed a Section 12(b)(6) motion to dismiss the case. In particular, the Defendants alleged that claim 1 of the ‘572 patent was not eligible under 35 U.S.C. § 101 because it was “directed to” an abstract idea – specifically, the abstract idea of “retrieving, manipulating, and displaying three-dimensional objects in space,” which was “just a well-known longstanding practice commonly used by model builders, students constructing dioramas, architects, and even movie makers.” AR Design Innovations, 4:20-cv-392, Mem. Op. and Order (Dkt. 78), slip op. at 3 (E.D. Tex. filed May 12, 2020). Defendants specifically argued that claim 1 of the ‘572 patent was analogous to the longstanding human practice of making models or constructing dioramas (i.e., miniature scenes reproduced in three dimensions by placing figures before a painted background). Id. at 18. Patent Owner, AR Design, rebutted that claim 1 was instead directed to a software tool that set 3D objects in 3D scenes, and that provided an improvement by allowing for the application of luminosity characteristics to the scene and the real-time manipulation of 3D objects on client devices via an easy-to-use graphical user interface. Id. The court agreed with AR Design. According to the court, the ‘572 patent claim 1 was “directed to” specific improvements to the manipulability and appearance of 3D scenes and objects, including luminosity characteristics. Id. at 17. The ‘572 specification explained that the claimed invention enhanced the speed with which such scenes and objects may be rendered and edited. Thus, because claim 1 was directed to the underlying system’s “speed” and “usability,” it could not be abstract (and, therefore, could not be patent ineligible). Id. The court further noted that the Defendants’ characterization of AR Design’s claims as a well-known “diorama” technique was overly simplistic and did not capture the essence of AR Design’s claimed invention. Id. at 18. Instead, the court noted that it discerned “no difference between improvements to a tool such as a hammer or saw that makes building dioramas faster and easier and a patent on specific improvements to a tool such as the software at issue that makes digital 3D modeling faster and easier.” Id. Accordingly, the court denied the Defendants’ motion to dismiss. Id. at 19. Each of the defendants subsequently settled their respective cases. Blockchain Gamers Surge As Users Attempt ‘stacking Crypto,’ Says DappRadar – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/blockchain-gamers-surge-as-users-attempt-stacking-crypto-says-dappradar-cointelegraph/ User activity on blockchain gaming decentralized applications (DApps) surged in September, with a host of games posting significant increases in the number of active users. According to data from DappRadar, seven out of the top 10 games in terms of the number of “unique wallet addresses interacting with dapp’s smart contracts” increased over the past 30 days, with all of the top five games being in the green during that time frame. At the time of writing, the DApps registering growth in the period include Web3 gaming platform Gameta, and blockchain-based games Alien Worlds, Solitaire Blitz, Benji Bananas, and Splinterlands, Farmers World, and Arc8 by GAMEE.  In a Sept. 27 blog post, DappRadar noted that eight of the current top 10 blockchain games are mobile-first, which could eventually “bring millions of users to the blockchain,” noting:  “Dapp games like Gameta, Benji Bananas, Upland, and Trickshot Blitz let anyone with a mobile device earn crypto with little prior knowledge, investment, or risk.” “Using daily activities like hyper-casual mobile games as a hook ensures users find fun once they interact, while solid tokenomics can encourage everyday use and retention,” it added.  DappRadar said one of the possible reasons for a rise in popularity of blockchain games despite the bear market, is the idea of “bleed in the bear and run in the bull.” “The idea that stacking crypto and investments in a bear market pays off in the bull is almost proven at this point.” The biggest uptick in users came from Animoca Brands’ Benji Bananas (Polygon) which saw a 2016.54% increase over the past 30 days. Notably, this game was a Web2 mobile app until March this year.  Animoca then introduced play-to-earn (P2E) elements via the Bored Ape Yacht Club affiliated Ape Coin (APE). While it is unclear what specifically saw the number of Benji Bananas users increase by so much, it did host a P2E gaming event this month that offered a series of valuable in-game NFTs to the winners. Blockchain gaming DApps activity: DappRadar Out of the top 10 games, only Axie Infinity, Trickshot Blitz, and Upland saw decreases over the past 30-days. The increase of blockchain gamers this month comes as publications such as Bloomberg note in a Sept. 28 article that the highly correlated NFT market trading “frenzy is almost dead.” It points to overall NFT trading volumes dropping 97% since January as evidence of such. As Animoca Brands co-founder Yat Siu pointed out via Twitter on Sept. 30, purely looking at the metric of NFT sales volume doesn’t necessarily paint the whole picture in NFTs or gaming. Siu highlighted that NFT prices have generally declined in accordance with the price of their paired assets such as Ether (ETH,) while many games — that don’t often grab the headlines — require NFTs that are relatively cheap. He instead emphasized that user activity and the number of people entering Web3 is where the focus should be. 6/ Judging an entire market simply by one metric is imperfect you need to take a multifaceted lens eg. @TheSandboxGame has seen record growth in users in its last season despite the market and blockchain wallets continues to rise https://t.co/brvDgCAhqh — Yat Siu (@ysiu) September 29, 2022 Gods Unchained breaks 10 top NFT sales Meanwhile, NFT-based card battle game Gods Unchained has seen its NFT sales volume creep into the top 10 in NFT sales volume over the past 30 days, according to Cryptoslam. Gods Unchained has seen a 373.25% increase over the past 30 days to sit at $10.8 million at the time of writing. This marks the first time the game has seen NFT sales top $10 million since January, and after a very slow February to August period. Related: Yat Siu: Asia GameFi opportunity huge as gamers don’t hate NFTs Reasons behind this could be due to discussions of a “Season 2” upgrade to improve the game and lore in the works and GameStop offering free NFT packs to Pro members this month. While an esports tournament with a $70,000 prize pool was also announced at the start of this week. Gods Unchained has also seen a significant increase in active users over the past 30 days, gaining 28.50% to sit at around 14,180 according to DappRadar. The game still has a long way to catch up to the top 10 however, as its user count places it at twenty-eighth.

Anti-Asian Hate Crimes Are Scaring Chinese Travelers Away From The US – CNN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/anti-asian-hate-crimes-are-scaring-chinese-travelers-away-from-the-us-cnn/ Editor’s Note — A version of this story appears in CNN’s Meanwhile in China newsletter, a three-times-a-week update exploring what you need to know about the country’s rise and how it impacts the world. Sign up here. Hong Kong (CNN) — Cannon Yu lives in Shantou, Guangdong province. In the past, her sales job at a packaged-foods company took her to business conferences all over the world. But she hasn’t left China since early 2020 and is taking her sales calls online instead of in person in Thailand, Germany, Morocco and elsewhere. While most countries have reopened their borders and resumed travel back to previous pre-Covid levels, China has remained extremely conservative in its approach and continues to adhere to a stringent and uncompromising “zero-Covid” policy. While those policies keep Chinese people in, they also keep most foreigners out, making it less likely for people like Yu to interact with people from other countries. And although China still hasn’t announced a plan for removing quarantine and other roadblocks for international travel, Yu can’t wait to get back on the road and travel again. There’s one exception, though — she has major reservations about visiting the United States. How the East looks at the West Scott Moskowitz, geopolitical risk analyst for APAC at the decision intelligence company Morning Consult, says that state-controlled media in China has played up examples of anti-Asian violence in the US in order to make its citizens less interested in going there. It’s “a strategically curated ecosystem that over-reports and sensationalizes negative foreign news compared to the tight controls on coverage of challenging or disturbing domestic instance,” he says. And Yu’s beliefs bear that out. “They look at people discriminately (there),” she says. “Not only for Chinese, but for Black people. It’s very difficult to get fair treatment for all people in the United States.” She adds that she has spoken to friends who have visited the US, claiming that they were detained and searched by customs agents before being allowed to leave the airport. Yu is one of an increasingly vocal community of Chinese travelers who say that anti-Asian discrimination in the US has made them afraid to visit someday. This month, Morning Consult published a study on this exact trend. Their findings, based on a survey of 1,000 adults, showed that “a plurality of Chinese have little to no interest in US travel,” with violence and anti-Asian discrimination both cited as factors. According to Morning Consult’s data, 22% of mainland Chinese respondents are “not interested at all” in visiting the US, with an additional 23% saying they are “not that interested.” Of the survey respondents, 57% say that violent crime is a primary reason they don’t want to go to the US, while 52% cite terrorism, 36% say petty crime and 44% say they are concerned about anti-China bias by locals. Mass shootings are another specific concern, with “those who have seen, read or heard about the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas” earlier this year “far more likely to cite violent crime as a reason not to travel” to the country, Morning Consult says in its report. Instead, some Chinese travelers are now looking elsewhere, with destinations in Europe clearly preferred over the US, according to the survey. In the wake of anti-Asian hate crimes, “United Shades of America” discusses the need for Asian Americans to have a greater voice in bridging divides. The series airs Sundays at 10 p.m. ET. The rise of violence Amid the pandemic, there has been an increase in anti-Asian harassment around the world, much of it the result of misinformation or misplaced aggression about the origins of Covid-19. The nonpartisan coalition Stop AAPI Hate provides a place for people to report harassment and attacks. Perhaps the most covered anti-Asian hate attack in the United States since the start of the pandemic was the “Atlanta spa murders,” during which eight women in three different massage parlors were shot and killed by Robert Aaron Long, a White man. Six of the eight victims were Asian, and Long was charged with hate crimes in addition to the murders. Last year, New York Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced the Covid-19 Hate Crimes bill, which was signed into law by President Joe Biden. Meng, who is of Taiwanese descent, represents parts of Queens, the diverse New York City borough that is home to many Asian Americans. These incidents — which range from street harassment to physical violence — get significant coverage outside of the US, including in China. Current geopolitical tensions aren’t helping. Moskowitz says that the perception that the US is China’s biggest rival has only heightened attention to stories of anti-Asian discrimination or violence in the country, even though similar incidents also take place elsewhere. “This differential is especially exaggerated in terms of (Chinese state media) reporting on the US as compared to Europe and other places. Some of this is strategic and intentional, curated in order to diminish the appeal and soft power of the country China sees as its great rival, both politically and ideologically,” he tells CNN Travel. “There are strong perceptions in China that there is a lot of global bias against their country,” Moskowitz adds. “Personal and national identity are very strongly tied in China so there may be concerns that more macro and political grievances and resentments (both real and perceived) with a country will be turned back towards the individual when traveling abroad.” How to change perceptions Although changing the way Chinese travelers see the US won’t happen overnight, it’s not impossible. “The results of this survey specifically suggest that travel companies and destinations should double down on safety-related messaging in marketing campaigns targeting Chinese consumers,” says Lindsey Roeschke, travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult, who co-authored the survey with Moskowitz. She adds: “Travel brands should provide pre-departure information on safety tools and tips. Those who want to take additional action may consider providing access to safety-oriented tour guides or a designated personal safety representative during travelers’ stays.” Some countries have given specific warnings to their citizens about US travel, specifically as it relates to gun violence. In 2019, the group Amnesty International issued an alert to people exhorting them to “exercise caution and have an emergency contingency plan when traveling throughout the USA” due to gun violence. As for Cannon Yu, she’s still eager to travel anywhere outside of China once it becomes less difficult. Despite everything, she is still curious about the US and hopes to eventually see it for herself. In particular, there’s one place on her bucket list — Las Vegas. “I want to gamble,” she says. And then, after a pause, she continues: “I want to make friends.” Top image: Asian American community leaders place flowers on a memorial for murder victim Christina Yuna Lee after an anti-Asian hate rally in New York City. Digital Minister Aims To Wrest Japan Out Of Analog Doldrums – The Associated Press – En Español https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/digital-minister-aims-to-wrest-japan-out-of-analog-doldrums-the-associated-press-en-espanol/ TOKYO (AP) — The politician tapped to help Japan keep pace with the digital age has his work cut out for him. After all, the nation known for Nintendo games, Lexus sportscars and other gadgetry galore also loves the fax machine and the traditional “hanko” seals that work as analog signatures. But Digital Minister Taro Kono has a reputation for no-nonsense action and for defying vested interests in high places. “I have no intention of playing coordinator,” he told reporters in a small briefing that was, aptly, conducted online Friday. “If people don’t listen, I am going to beat them up,” he added with a laugh. Japan ranked 28th among 64 nations in digital competitiveness in 2021, little changed from five years before, according to a study by IMD, a Swiss-based independent academic organization, which looked at how well equipped nations are to encourage technological development and to leverage them for the future. The U.S. was No. 1, China No. 15. Kono, a former foreign minister and defense minister, has flaunted his digital savvy for years. Kono’s Japanese Twitter account, which has drawn 2.5 million followers, features everything from a bowling video to policy commentary. Fluent in English, having attended Georgetown University, he also has an English Twitter account with 70,000 followers. In a YouTube video last month, he urged people to get a My Number Card, a digital identity card for Japanese citizens and residents that they can use for online government applications and link to a driver’s license, library card or online banking. But Kono knows it will take more than social media stardom to wrest Japan out of its analog doldrums. He noted the endeavor doesn’t have to be complicated; people will naturally choose what’s convenient. “Even a child knows that a seal doesn’t really work as personal identification,” he said, while adding that he loves Japanese seals as craftwork. “There is a mindset that it’s someone else’s problem,” he said of society’s complacency. During the coronavirus pandemic, when remote working became widespread around the world, Japanese realized how far behind they had fallen, Kono said. The Digital Agency was set up in Japan last year to nurture competitiveness in digital technology. Some skepticism remains. Critics say the idea of “a digital transformation” is already outdated and only Japan is still talking so much about it. In 2018, the minister in charge of cybersecurity, Yoshitaka Sakurada, became a target of ridicule when he didn’t know what a USB port was. Yet technology experts have pinned great hopes for what Kono might achieve. Kono has always stood apart among ruling Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers. His father was a prominent lawmaker known as a maverick. His grandfather was also a legendary politician. And rock the boat is what Kono needs to do. His agency has shown by example by becoming more open and diverse, adding people from the private sector and other walks of life who may have ideas on the change Japan so critically needs. What will be his benchmark measure for success? “When there are smiles everywhere,” Kono said. ___ Yuri Kageyama is on Twitter https://twitter.com/yurikageyama
