San Diego Declares Homelessness A Public Health Crisis. ‘Today, Our County Takes A Significant Step’ – The San Diego Union-Tribune https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/san-diego-declares-homelessness-a-public-health-crisis-today-our-county-takes-a-significant-step-the-san-diego-union-tribune/ The San Diego County Board of Supervisors unanimously declared homelessness a public health crisis Tuesday, a move the board said will create a more unified, regional approach to the problem. In another unanimous vote, supervisors also approved a $3 million pilot program to provide $500 a month to 220 seniors to help them avoid homelessness over 18 months. “A public health approach to homelessness will help align efforts, share resources, and more purposefully help address the root causes of housing instability and health on a large scale with a humane response,” said Vice Chair Nora Vargas, who with Chairman Nathan Fletcher introduced the policy. “Today, our county takes a significant step, by serving as a regional convener, bringing cities, business organizations and service providers together in a collaborative effort to develop innovative, sustainable, long-term solutions to prevent and end homelessness.” While the declaration itself does not create new programs or generate new funding, supervisors said it would elevate homelessness as a regional issue and call attention to the health aspects of the problem. A count conducted in February found 8,427 homeless people throughout the county, with more than half living without shelter. The Regional Task Force on Homelessness, which conducts the count, found 14 percent of homeless people have chronic health conditions, 18 percent have mental health conditions, 12 percent have physical disabilities, 13 percent have substance use disorders and about 25 percent are 55 and older. Following the vote, Father Joe’s Villages President and CEO Deacon Jim Vargas issued a statement in support of the declaration. “Together, we can solve the crisis of homelessness, but we must move out of disciplinary and jurisdictional silos to collaborate and work as partners with measurable goals, he said. “This declaration is a key step to drive further collaboration between our local jurisdictions, homeless services providers, health care professionals, and others to develop resources and a comprehensive approach.” During the meeting, San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria’s chief of staff Nick Serrano spoke in support of the declaration and said all levels of government should work together on the issue. Jordan Beane, director of policy and communications for the Regional Task Force on Homelessness, called the declaration incredibly important. ”One thing is clear,” Beane said. “Simply being without a home is a dangerous health crisis.” Homeless advocate Martha Sullivan called into the meeting in support of the policy and said the county Medical Examiner’s Office had reported 495 deaths of homeless people in 2021, up from 334 in 2020. Fletcher said the county has become more involved than ever in working on solutions to homelessness, but more needs to be done regionally. “The easiest thing in the world is for folks to stand up and say, ‘Not here, not there, not this program or not this program,’” he said about the resistance some communities have put up to shelters and services. “The hard, difficult work is putting in place things that, while imperfect, will actually help get people off the street and get people the services and help and support they need.” Most callers and public speakers were in support of the public health declaration and of the rent subsidy program for seniors facing homelessness. Providing some background on the subsidy proposal, Serving Seniors President and CEO Paul Downey spoke before the board and said his organization had released a needs assessment report last year and found many seniors said another $300 a month would stabilize their housing situation. Downey said 80 percent of 400 seniors interviewed in the assessment said they faced housing instability because of economic reasons. Beane told supervisors that the latest count by the Regional Task Force on Homelessness found about 25 percent of homeless people on the street were 55 or older, and the oldest person counted this year was 87. “When it’s just a few hundred dollars, we should do everything we can to fill that gap,” he said about the rent subsidy. “The easiest way to solve homelessness is to make sure nobody experiences it in the first place.” Sullivan, the homeless advocate who had supported the public health declaration, also called in to voice support of the subsidy program, but said she was disappointed that payments would not begin until next March. “The urgency is dire,” she said. “These folks don’t have until March. There’s a lot of folks who are going to become homeless waiting for this. And I’m very dismayed it’s only 220 households.” To qualify for the subsidy, an applicant must be at least 55 years old and the head of household. The applicant’s household income may not exceed 50 percent of the area median income, and the household must be severely rent-burdened, which is defined as paying more than 50 percent of household income towards housing. During the pilot program, preference will be given to applicants 60 years or older whose income is at or below 30 percent of the area median income and to seniors who live within one of the 39 Health Equity Zip Codes, areas identified as having some of the poorest access to healthy living conditions.

Who should buy it, and why? The Apple Watch reached its peak with the Series 6 as far as innovations are concerned. Ever since then, the upgrades come in just to make it edge further ahead. The Series 7 simply introduced a larger and more immersive display. While Apple reserved the athlete focused package for the Apple Watch Ultra, the Series 8 continues to be everyone’s luxury smartwatch and with just the bare minimum upgrades required to keep it relevant. The key part? It remains the best smartwatch money can buy. The theme on the Series 8 has been different than the Series 7 – introduce features for specific scenarios that keeps the Apple Watch in news, as well as makes it more desirable among the masses; both youngsters and the elderly. Hence, crash detection and fall detection take centerstage, while the temperature sensor comes into play for tracking female menstrual health. Do these features make the Series 8 compelling enough? Design The Apple Watch Series 7 got a major design update last year, which made it unmistakably unique. I am glad Apple leaves the design unchanged for the Series 8, since it continues to look stunning even after a year! The display melting over the edges and all its curvy surfaces make it an eye candy on wrists! Plus the attention to detail is exceptional. No Action button heree yet, although I hope Apple makes it standard on the Series 9. For all those new to the modern Apple Watch, the Series 8 is comfortable to wear. The aluminium version comes as standard with silicon straps but you can go for the Sport Loop, or Braided straps, if you fancy aesthetics. My 45mm version looks more like a wrist computer, and many may prefer the petite dimensions of the 42mm version. Smartness An area that the Apple Watch defined years ago! I don’t find any other smartwatch as smart and capable as the Apple Watch. Much of it comes down to its watchOS software, which in its ninth generation, is more polished than ever. watchOS 9 is a beautiful experience to be had, and the Apple Watch hardware justifies it well. The watch faces are beautiful and the customisation options are endless, whether you consider colour combinations, or the complications on your dial. The metropolitan watch face is the hero face for 2022 and on the Series 8, it simply looks gorgeous. Then there’s the regular smart stuff. You become a part of the Apple ecosystem with the Series 8 and that means you enjoy unparalleled integration between the watch and your iPhone. Notifications are instant and they let you respond to texts, and even check out Twitter links in preview. You can obviously take and make calls, and if you have the eSIM activated, you don’t even need your iPhone on you always. The app library is brilliant, and if any app on your iPhone has an Apple Watch companion app, it will be downloaded automatically. There are endless features to play with, my favourite one being the Walkie Talkie. All of that is made possible by the display, which is easily the best one I have seen on a watch. It’s rectangular, which makes it easy to read text, or see images. It goes fairly bright outdoors under the Sun, and the touch response is brilliant. Thanks to the variable refresh rate that drops it down to 1Hz, you get to have an Always On Display feature. It prevents twisting the wrist everytime to check the watch, but drains battery faster. Then there’s the crown, which makes controlling it easy. The crown makes it easy to scroll through lists, and even go back with a single press. The Home button takes you back to the watch face, or lets you alternate between active apps. But this year’s hero feature is Crash Detection and Fall Detection, both of which I am not interested to test out, and I hope I never have to use. The new gyroscope sensor along with the updated algorithms can detect up to 256G force, and in the event of a car crash, it will notify emergency services immediately. A YouTube creator tested the same in a simulated remote controlled car and found it actually worked. Good to know that. Health and Fitness The Apple Watch has always been presented as a fitness forward watch and not much changes on that front. I can still track my workout and keep an eye on my heart health. However, the big addition this year is the temperature sensor. For the time being, Apple makes it useful only for female menstrual health tracking. The sensor tracks body temperature while sleeping and uses the data to predict the ovulation dates, both in the past as well as present. For male users like me, there’s nothing this sensor can do. At least, it is better than being disabled, as it is on the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5. What I was able to use was the ECG tracking, Blood Oxygen saturation, and heart rate – all of which the Apple Watch has been great at since years. All of these sensors are used in tandem to keep an eye on your heart health, and the Apple Watch continues to warn you about irregularities. Sleep tracking gets an upgrade too with watchOS 9. You can finally get to see your sleep data in various stages – REM, light, deep and awake. That said, you still need to manually activate sleep mode for monitoring, and if you accidentally disable it in between your sleep, the watch tracks nothing. My iPhone and Watch are tied to the Sleep Focus mode and an accidental tap led to losing all data, just before I got up from bed. Not smart enough, Apple. And then there’s workout monitoring – an area where the Apple Watch has been good. Workout detection is of big help – a 5 minute walking session automatically started tracking it. For those into serious fitness routines involving vigorous exercises, this could be of big help. I did not have a medically certified gadget to track the accuracy of the data, but fellow reviewers and users have always verified the same. The wellness features are as good as they always have been. The MindFullness feature is a cool way to relax and reflect. The same goes for the Breathe feature. Battery Life Battery stamina on the Apple Watch Series 8 seems to have remained largely unchanged. With the Always On Display active and an hour of workout tracking daily, the Series 8 could last up to 1.5 days on a single charge. Turning off the AOD helps it extend the battery stamina to the end of the second day. That’s not bad for an Apple Watch, but it is not great either for a smartwatch. Fast charging is available for global users but as always, India has to make do with slow charging; thanks to local regulations. It takes close to just over an hour to fill up the battery. Verdict As I said, the Apple Watch Series 8 is all about the features that keep the Apple Watch in the news. Ethereum Merge Vaults Cryptocurrency Past Bitcoin In Hard-Money Allure – CoinDesk https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ethereum-merge-vaults-cryptocurrency-past-bitcoin-in-hard-money-allure-coindesk/ Ethereum won plaudits and the spotlight two weeks ago for smoothly pushing through its much-hyped Merge, a historic shift to a different “proof-of-stake” blockchain system designed to drastically reduce energy consumption – roughly 99% by some estimates. Now, the second-biggest blockchain appears to be proving itself on another promise of the Merge: greater inflation-resistance, a characteristic that’s usually more closely associated with Ethereum’s bigger and better-known rival, Bitcoin. In the days since the Merge, the annualized net issuance rate of Ethereum’s native cryptocurrency, ether (ETH), has fallen to a range of 0% to 0.7%, estimates Lucas Outumuro, head of research at crypto data and analysis firm IntoTheBlock. That compares with about 3.5% prior to the Merge. The net issuance rate, also referred to as the inflation rate, is essentially the new supply divided by the existing supply. The website Ultra Sound Money puts the annualized inflation rate at 0.19%, based on data showing that some 8,100 ETH have been added to ether’s total supply since the Merge. In a world where central banks worldwide are struggling to contain inflation – in the face of trillions of dollars of money-printing and severe supply-chain bottlenecks – Ethereum’s reduced issuance rate might help to bolster its appeal among investor in crypto and traditional markets alike. “The level of new tokens coming onto the network has substantially reduced.” Simon Peters, a market analyst at the trading firm eToro, wrote in a note Monday. The decline in Ethereum’s inflation rate comes from two factors: a reduction of new issuance as a result of the change in the underlying blockchain system, and a separate mechanism known as “EIP 1559” where fees paid for transactions on the network are “burned,” or eliminated from circulation. Before the Merge, the issuance of ether’s proof-of-work (PoW) mining rewards was around 13,000 ETH per day, according to the Ethereum Foundation. After the Merge, mining rewards disappeared, and staking rewards would theoretically amount to around 1,600 ETH per day – for a 90% drop in new issuance. When there are more transactions, there is a higher base fee. For ETH to flip to actually becoming deflationary at the current pre-burn issuance rate, the base transaction fee would have to be at least 15 Gwei, according to Daniel Kostecki, senior market analyst at the investment company Conotoxia. The transaction fee was around 10 Gwei as of press time, according to Ultra Sound Money. The net inflation rate is still “higher than the deflationary ETH many anticipated,” IntoTheBlock’s Outumuro said. The ether price slid about 5% in the past 30 days, trading just above $1,300 Tuesday as the broader macroeconomic environment has been struggling with high market volatility. Ironically, according to Alexandre Lores, director of blockchain market research at Quantum Economics, future updates to the network might reduce fees, which could result in “a greater and inflating supply.” “However, I expect that network growth will balance out this factor long-term,” Lores said, “and I am bullish on Ethereum as the premier decentralized application layer network in the world.” Of course, Ethereum’s transition to the proof-of-stake system brought downsides – notably the risk that the new “staking yields” on the cryptocurrency might draw extra scrutiny from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission – since ether might start to resemble a bond. The proposal was removed from bipartisan legislation to subsidize U.S. semiconductor chips manufacturing and research in a bill approved in August. Instead, the company will aim to produce 90 million handsets for the period, roughly the same level as the prior year and in line with Apple’s original forecast this summer, the people said. Duarte-Herrera, from Nicaragua, was convicted in 2010 of killing a hot dog stand vendor using a motion-activated bomb in a coffee cup atop a car parked at the Luxor hotel-casino. Records show his co-defendant, Omar Rueda-Denvers, remained in custody Tuesday. The 47-year-old from Guatemala is serving a life sentence at a different Nevada prison for murder, attempted murder, explosives and other charges. A Clark County District Court jury spared both men from the death penalty in the slaying of Willebaldo Dorantes Antonio, whom prosecutors identified as the boyfriend of Rueda-Denvers’ ex-girlfriend. Prosecutors said jealousy was the motive for the attack on the top deck of a two-story parking structure. The blast initially raised fears of a terrorist attack on the Strip. Officials described Duarte-Herrera as 5 feet, 4 inches tall and 135 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair.

A Lifetime Of Moments, Part Two – Warwick Beacon https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-lifetime-of-moments-part-two-warwick-beacon/ For my obituary, I want to be remembered for the small moments which have accumulated to form my life’s mosaic.  Hubby and I married when we were young, and, characteristically, got married over the October holiday so we would have the extra Monday off for our honeymoon in the cape before returning to our jobs.  Later that year, while visiting a friend who lived in Hollywood, California, I was chosen to be on the game show “All Star Secrets”, with Bob Eubanks as the host.  The premise included a panel of four “stars” and a disclosed secret.  The panelists, including me wearing a bright yellow shirt and broad grin, would have to guess which star the secret was about.  Having watched the show, I knew that the secret always belonged to the least likely candidate. The winning question was something like “This star always felt awkward as a child and did not socialize well.” The anti-answer was staring me in the face, Jed Allen, a star of the soap opera “The Days of our Lives” who appeared to be very sociable and graceful.  Of course, everyone was amazed that a man of his stature had ever felt awkward, and I won the show, which included a fifteen-day trip to five islands of Hawaii and $2600 in cash. It was this trip which Hubby and I used as our honeymoon, and we enjoyed every ocean wave, waterfall, luau, and volcanic tour made available to us.  Traveling the country, which was done as a child, morphed into international travel with my mother after my father passed away.  To him, traveling meant driving the Volkswagen van on the small, windy roads across America.  To my mother, it meant being on foreign soil truly experiencing a different culture, and I was glad to help her spend her money to do so.  (It appears that my father’s cheapness his whole life resulted in a hefty sum left over in their bank account once he passed away.)  On our first trip to Guatemala, we stayed in a village inn in Chichicastenango.  Although there was no electricity, we were provided a “manservant” who stood outside our door to light the candles and provide heated bath water.  My mother and I giggled at the thought of such a thing but did feel safe from the marauders who may have been cavorting outside our windows.  On a later trip to Costa Rica, where we stayed at a non-commercialized resort, we had great fun trying to fit in with the locals who had come to the area for a vacation.  Without either of us speaking a word of Spanish, we pointed to the foods we wanted in the Costa Rican buffet, boiled rabbit, gallo pinto (white rice and black beans sauteed in oil with diced onions, sweet peppers, and coriander,) fried plantains, and arroz con pollo, (sauteed rice with shredded chicken and diced vegetables.) On that trip, we went white water rafting, with my mom fully clothed in long pants, socks, sweatshirt, and jacket which became drenched in river. (I have a picture of her looking like a wet rat.) On a trip to England to get son, Francis settled at Cambridge University, my mother and I stood outside Buckingham Palace, in the rain, and she poked me in the eye with her umbrella, all caught by the camera. This confirmed my previously irrational fear that an umbrella could poke me in the eye.  (Fortunately, contrary to my phobia, I did NOT lose an eye.) I got to travel to Belize with my mom and family, and we almost lost son Steven to the alligators behind the ill-fitting fence meant to contain them at the “zoo”.  On a hike up to a shrine in Nicaragua the tour guide warned of impending possible mountain lion attacks.  Exhausted on the uphill trail, my mother lamented, “I hope one attacks me just so I can lay down”. Global travel with my mom defined my adulthood. These enriching, always enjoyable journeys into other countries taught me about the sanctity of life. Seeing that many of the residents we encountered were dirt poor, yet happy and sociable, confirmed that it is not the quantity and quality of possessions that makes one happy.

OPINION: After spending a number of days trying to figure out if plant-based food alternatives count towards our 5+ a day, I was met with a very troubling realisation: I am not eating enough veges. We’ve all been taught the golden 5+ a day rule – eat three vegetables and two fruits a day, and you’ll be on the right track to achieving a healthy lifestyle. As it turns out, the recommendations on eating and living well are a little more complex than shoving greens into your gob. The Ministry of Health’s (MoH) Eating and Activity Guidelines contain recommendations for daily servings of grains, proteins, and milk products as well as fruits and veg, and the number of suggested servings differs between gender and age groups. As a 22-year-old female, I’m supposed to work in five servings of vegetables, two of fruit, six servings of grains, two and a half servings of protein, and another two and a half of milk products – every day. Proteins in the MoH’s guidelines include “some legumes, nuts, seeds, fish and other seafood, eggs, poultry and/or red meat with the fat removed.” I’m also meant to limit the amount of salt, saturated fats, and sugar, focus on wholefoods and get in 2.1L of water a day. I tasked myself with the goal of following these guidelines for a week, hoping to transform my life with a government approved way of living. A regular day of eating for me would see me get half my recommended veges and grains. My protein serves were fulfilled but my milk product servings would often go overboard. I made it my mission to target whole veges and grains in my meals. I have a tendency to lose my appetite in the middle of the day if I’m stressed or dealing with a busy work day, which means I often skip lunch (although I always have breakfast and dinner). Missing a meal made it near impossible to get in the full list of recommendations. At one point I was so worried about not meeting my daily vegetable intake I ate corn with porridge for breakfast (it actually tasted pretty good). Another day, I counted avocado as part of my veggie serve and didn’t realise until after it’s actually a fruit. Cottage pies and curries became regular menu items as they contained as many as three servings of vegetables and two serves of grain, while smoothies helped me meet my milk, grain, and fruit serves. While my fruit and vegetables were successfully on the rise, my grains were still lacking. The idea of needing to double my usual intake was easily the most daunting aspect of this healthy eating, and I never managed a day when I ate all six servings. Grains aren’t exactly a food group that is found in abundance in my household. My boyfriend has coeliac disease (he can’t eat gluten) so our pantry only consists of gluten-free pastas and white rice (do gluten-free alternatives have different serving sizes?). It wasn’t just fitting the grains into a meal that caused issues. I deal with frequent painful bloating, and after eating each meal I felt like my stomach was swelling up to the size of a balloon. Unfortunately, the discomfort and bloating didn’t ease up the whole week. Because I was so focused on veges and grains, I often ignored working milk products into my diet unless it was the yoghurt I paired with my morning cereal. On average, each day of my trial week, I would eat four servings of vegetables, one serving of fruit, three servings of grains, two servings of proteins, and one and a half servings of milk products. There wasn’t a single day when I managed every recommended serving from every food group. Nutritionist Lillian Morton says the MoH base their guidelines on a wide range of research to see how our portion sizes in food groups can improve our health. “It’s based on a whole truck load of research that they’ve pulled together and said, ‘if you do this, this will keep you healthy’.” Lyric Waiwiri-Smith/Stuff Chicken curry with rice and veges- one serving of proteins, two servings of veg, and one a half serving of grains. Morton suggests my method of suddenly increasing servings may have stressed out my gut. “The gut is quite a complicated organism, so when you eat a lot of something there are all these receptors in the stomach and the gut that your body regulates,” Morton says. “When you don’t eat a lot of grains, and you suddenly introduce new foods to your diet, your stomach actually takes a while to recalibrate. “Whole grains have a lot of fibre, and fibre is amazing for the gut, but it does make you feel bloated because it ferments in the large intestine. You’ve also added more fibre with the fruit and veg, so you’ve got way more fibre and that takes a lot of digestion. “It does come right, it’s just how your body works … you get a bit symptomatic and think ‘grains don’t agree with me’ rather than just persisting. “Going from nothing to a hundred is quite a lot for the gut to deal with. Their collective efforts came to fruition last month when they co-published “Jumping Through Hoops: Differences in Marketing Men’s and Women’s Basketball on Twitter” in the Journal of Contemporary Athletics, a peer-reviewed journal that examines all levels of athletics – interscholastic, intercollegiate, club and professional. Dabbs and Latimer were frequent collaborators during the Elon alumna’s time on campus. She began the initial brainstorming of her project when she took my Research Methods in Sport class where our relationship started to bloom. Over the course of three years, Claire and I met every week to advance her research, and we both were the recipients of special moments and memories that I will forever hold with me.” Together, Dabbs and Latimer examined Twitter’s extensive reach among college sports fans, and how college athletic departments utilize the platform to share real-time game information, forge fan connections, and market its brand. The researchers conducted a content/document analysis to investigate how a mid-major collegiate athletic department uses Twitter to market their basketball teams and the representation gap between the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Tweets were collected from the men’s and women’s basketball programs, as well as the athletic department’s Twitter pages, during a single season. The tweets were then coded by themes for their marketing purposes. The results found that 16% of the men’s program’s tweets were retweeted by the athletic department compared to just .09% of tweets from the women’s program. “Claire showed resiliency and commitment during the undergraduate research process and is now a better leader and critical thinker because of it,” Dabbs said. “Her experience working with Elon Athletics and leading the Women Influencers in Sport (WINS) program enhanced her knowledge and connection to the research. I am beyond proud of her and I am confident this undergraduate research experience will help her professionally in the sport industry.” Following graduation, Latimer landed a role as a premium experience assistant for the Tennessee Titans. In addition to her contributions to Elon Athletics and WINS, Latimer was an active and visible member of the Elon academic community. She graduated with a 3.8 GPA and several undergraduate research projects under her belt, including a presentation at the 2021 AEJMC Southeast Colloquium and SURF Day. During an interview with Hit Points, the 45-year-old game developer revealed that Artemis, his next game, will feature NFTs, the metaverse, and blockchain. “[Artemis] will be a platform that we participate in the maintenance of, maybe,” he explained. “But it’s something that anyone can plug into, and everyone can host a bit of themselves.” Artemis will reportedly let players make anything they like as part of a large, open world. But now, it looks as though the project will incorporate blockchain. “I was fascinated with this idea of digital spaces, places where there are no real rules but a set of systems that you can use,” explained Greene. “That fascinated me, and still does. I never considered just walking away.” Blockchain is often pitched as a way for players to contribute to a game’s development, but many developers have come out against the technology with the likes of Minecraft outright banning the use of NFTs or blockchain. Greene insists that Artemis is not about making money. “The only way this exists is if it’s made for everyone, and it’s not made for money,” he said. However, he also confirmed that players will be able to “extract value” from their creations by selling in-game items to other players. Despite the skepticism, Greene says he’ll continue regardless. “I’m just going to do what I’m going to do,” he said. “But it doesn’t matter if it’s called the metaverse. I don’t care what people want to call it.” Of course, Greene won’t be the first developer to get into the metaverse. Bandai Namco recently revealed it’s spent a massive $130 million on an upcoming metaverse project. Not to mention Epic Games and LEGO working together on a child-safe metaverse project. Area Resident’s Classic Album Review: Pink Floyd | Ummagumma – Tinnitist https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/area-residents-classic-album-review-pink-floyd-ummagumma-tinnitist/ When you have a favourite band, sometimes you have records of theirs which you rarely play and don’t enjoy thoroughly enough to spin. I’ve had a love affair with Pink Floyd since 1985 or so. I have all the albums, but there are a few which rarely get played anymore. Still, not only would I never part with them — I’d even consider buying a special edition. It’s an illness. 1969’s Ummagumma is one such album. This was Pink Floyd’s fourth release — a two-record set with both a live album and a studio album. Their previous release was the spotty soundtrack from the film More. Their next project — Atom Heart Mother — would be their first gold record. Ummagumma has gone gold, technically, but that didn’t happen until 1974 and was the direct result of Dark Side Of The Moon’s success. The first thing to notice is the excellent live album begins with the same version of Astronomy Domine as on 1973’s A Nice Pair — a repackaging of the first two albums. Curious. I have no idea why this was done. There could be three reasons: They messed up; they didn’t want to pay former bandleader and principal songwriter Syd Barrett performance royalties; or they preferred this version. No question about it, the live version is incredible. The Ummagumma and A Nice Pair version features the group, but primarily David Gilmour singing the atypical Barrett masterpiece. The live tracks were recorded April 27, 1969 (my father’s 42nd birthday) at Mothers Club in Birmingham. Mothers was a second-floor venue above a pair of shops. Formerly a furniture store and then the Carlton Ballroom, it closed in March 1971. Filling out the rest of Side 1 on Ummagumma is the moody and explosive concert staple Careful With That Axe, Eugene. The song, which was the flipside of single Point Me At The Sky, was never on a studio album. It was issued on the 1971 compilation Relics. Originally called Beset By Creatures Of The Deep, Floyd re-performed the song as Come In Number 51, Your Time Is Up for the Zabriskie Point soundtrack in 1970. There’s quite a good live rendition of it in the 1972 French film Pink Floyd at Pompeii. The Ummagumma version is the best one — brooding, gloomy and chill until midway, when the title phrase is spoken by Roger Waters. “Careful, careful… careful with that axe, Eugene,” he says, followed by one of his inimitable long screams, signalling a big drum fill and an extended, explosive jam. It rounds out an absolutely unimpeachable first side of the album. Side 2 begins with another concert staple — one which Waters still performs. Truthfully, as much as teenaged me loved playing the main bass riff, Set The Controls For The Heart of The Sun is boring. Originally released on Floyd’s sophomore album A Saucerful Of Secrets, it lumbers along with the type of tiresome, whispered lyrics found in abundance on the More soundtrack. The song would be more effective at twice the speed, or covered by Portishead. But fans love it. I don’t smoke weed, so what do I know? Next (and last) on the live album is the epic Saucerful Of Secrets. Originally titled The Massed Gadgets Of Hercules, the song is broken down into four main sections: Something Else, Syncopated Pandemonium, Storm Signal and Celestial Voices. I’ll break it down for you — it means four minutes of moody malleted cymbals and chimes, followed by a quick, cool drum pattern with squealing guitar and percussion for three minutes, then it chills out for a minute and a half before the final section, which is the best part — a gorgeous Rick Wright organ and Mellotron progression with Gilmour singing the wordless melody overtop. For me, it’s a bit much. Epic, self-indulgent and not musical enough until the final four minutes. The Ummagumma version is just shy of 13 minutes. Seeing it performed is better than hearing it. You can do that, once again, via Pink Floyd At Pompeii. So, the live album is 50/50 for me. Side 1 is amazing. But even though the two tracks on Side 2 are bona fide classic psychedelic Floyd, I don’t ever need to hear them again. On to the studio album … goddamnit. Speaking of self-indulgence, the idea here was for each of the four members to conceive and lead something of their own. The results are mostly awful. It begins with Wright’s epic and boring Sysyphus. Curious spelling. The main melody is an ominous, dark death march which mercifully dissolves into a rather pleasant instrumental piano piece before the playing gets erratic and avant-garde. This is where I typically lift the stylus. The next section is similar, sounding like randomly plucked piano strings in time with kindergarten percussion. It’s annoying. Next there’s a Mellotron and organ bit which starts off quiet and gloomy and gets louder & louder before finally, mercifully, returning to the opening death-march theme. It’s bullshit. The next two tracks are Waters’ contributions. First is the lovely Grantchester Meadows, named after a green space in their hometown of Cambridge. It’s the best song on the studio album. It’s followed by an insane show-and-tell track, the wonderfully named Several Species Of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together In A Cave And Grooving With A Pict. The “song” has two parts — the beginning is a bunch of simulated rodent and animal sounds, microphone tapping and clicking accompanied by a sort of psychedelic beat-boxing — all performed by Waters. If that wasn’t bonkers enough, it devolves into the final bit — Waters shouting in an exaggerated Scottish burr. I can’t help but wonder what producer Norman Smith made of all this. It’s well-known that while he was The Beatles’ engineer, John Lennon used to call him Normal Smith. So of course when Smith wrote an autobiography he called it John Lennon Called Me Normal. Sigh. This was the last album he produced for the Floyd, for whom he actually has one performance credit — drums on Remember A Day, from Saucerful Of Secrets. Just as producer Jimmy Miller did on The Rolling Stones’ You Can’t Always Get What You Want, Smith stepped in to help a frustrated Nick Mason. Speaking of Mason, Side 4 of Ummagumma features his heinous songwriting contribution to the album — the pretentious, three-part Grand Vizier’s Garden Party. A Vizier, in case you’re wondering, was the highest-ranking political advisor to the Pharaoh in ancient Egypt. The song, which closes out the album, begins with a flute introduction before we are subjected to several minutes of amateur timpani playing. Or, what seems like timpani playing — tuning up and down of some sort of drum — accompanied by cymbal crashes and other toms, the playful tapping of a wood block and lord knows what else — absolutely drenched in reverb to sound like it was performed in a concrete silo. Eat your hearts out, Great Lake Swimmers. It descends into a raucous overdubbing of drum fills before returning to the flutes for the outro. The last side begins with Gilmour’s contribution, the frustrating The Narrow Way. And, of course, it has three parts. I actually really like this piece. It opens with a cool backward effect before jumping right into a soundtrack-sounding multi-tracked acoustic guitar piece with slide overdubs, once again sopping with reverb. Part 2 is a villain-sounding instrumental electric guitar riff set to a jungle beat. This again could be in a soundtrack, perhaps for a monster movie aimed at kids. A giant lizard perhaps. This eventually devolves into noise before Part 3 begins: The only song on the record which sounds like Pink Floyd. Well, 69-72 era soundtrack Floyd. It features an excellent lead vocal by Gilmour and some wonderfully sloppy and loud drum fills. It would have benefitted from a soaring Gilmour guitar solo, but he wasn’t really doing those yet. Nonetheless, this is how the album should have closed. The live album is 4/5 stars, the studio album is 2/5 — so, 3/5 altogether.

The bill has several more legislative steps before it passes, but Tuesday’s 72-23 voteis an indicator it has the bipartisan support needed to become law. The unveiling ceremony kicked off with a Ford derby, where employees drove their personal trucks around the track, showcasing Ford trucks through the ages. Tuesday’s unveiling followed an announcement earlier in the day by Ford executives and Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear that 500 new jobs will be coming to the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville, funded through a $700 million investment by the company. “The investment goes into updating or adding new equipment throughout the facility to make sure we’re ready for the content of the new truck,” John Savona, vice president of Americas Manufacturing & Labor Affairs for Ford Blue, said during the Tuesday morning news conference. Mike Levine, a Ford North America product communications director, said Ford was able to decide what new Super Duty truck features needed to be created after spending time living with customers in the Canadian oil fields and miners in the western United States. “We understand truck customers better than anyone else,” Levine said. “These are the industries, and these are the customers that we have that depend on our trucks to do their jobs.” Levine said by spending time watching customers use the truck it helped the company make new updates to the 2023 Super Duty that “makes their lives easier and a little bit more productive.” Ford is currently one of the largest employers in the city with nearly 9,000 total employees. Here are five key features of the new model. 1. Standard 6.8-liter V8 gas engine An increased engine will give the new model more horsepower for towing, payload and torque. Ford is also introducing a new high-output 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8 engine and 7.3-liter V8 engine. The goal of the standard engine is to target low-end torque which will allow for drivers to start on inclined surfaces and merge on to highways easier. The new engines will also get better gas horsepower and be able to go longer periods of time between oil changes due in part to improved air intake. New grilles will also maximize engine cooling while the truck is under heavy loads. 2. Embedded 5G capability The 2023 Super Duty will become the first U.S. pickup truck with 5G wireless capability, powered by AT&T, embedded in the vehicle. The feature will allow drivers to have Wi-Fi, access to Ford Power-Up software updates while driving and faster and smarter mapping capabilities. The Super Duty will also be able to provide a hotspot for up to 10 additional devices. The Trailer Navigation feature will use smart technology to identify the best routes based on a trailer’s size and weight and provide early warnings for low bridges and tight turns. This feature also allows the owner to create different trailer profiles for the various trailers they may pull making each drive customized to the specific trailer hitched. 3. Ford Pro Upfit Integration System A new feature aimed at drivers who utilize upfits and other body equipment such as plows or utility cranes, the digital integration system will provide improved access to the Super Duty’s electrical system, allowing for easier calibration. 4. Tremor Off-Road Package A new package available for those who need extra assets for off-roading, Tremor package trucks comes with a suspension tuned specifically for off-road driving, a front axle with a limited-slip differential, 35-inch Goodyear tires, custom 18-inch wheels, Trail Control and Trail Turn Assist technology and new drive modes, including a rock-crawl mode. 5. Interior upgrades On the interior, the model will provide an 8-12 inch display screen to allow drivers to see the outside of the vehicle from every angle and even offer an inside look into the trailers being hauled. This package also offers complete comfort by providing four USB charging ports, a wireless charging pad, reclining seats that go fully horizontal and an eight-speaker sound system. Ford officials said that while the base model will be available early next year, the trim series will be available starting spring 2023. (AP) — A former manager at an Arby’s restaurant in Washington has been sentenced to more than five years in prison after admitting he possessed child pornography and urinated into a milkshake mix that might have been served to dozens of people. Vancouver police said they uncovered footage of Stephen S. Sharp, 29, peeing into a bag of milkshake mix as they searched his phone as part of the child pornography investigation, The Columbian newspaper reported. Sharp pleaded guilty Aug. 16 in Clark County Superior Court to three counts of first-degree possession of child pornography and one count of second-degree attempted assault. Judge Derek Vanderwood sentenced him Monday to five years and seven months in prison. As part of his plea agreement, Sharp must register as a sex offender and is prohibited from going to any Arby’s restaurants. Sharp was working alone at an Arby’s in Vancouver’s Mill Plain neighborhood in October 2021 when he urinated at least twice into the milkshake mix bag. According to an affidavit filed in Clark County Superior Court, he told investigators he did it for sexual gratification and was “almost sure” he threw the bag out afterward. If he didn’t throw the bag away, he said, it would have been added to other mix by the next shift and served to customers. Another manager at the Arby’s told detectives the restaurant sold at least one ice cream float and about 30 to 40 milkshakes that day, court records said. The Vancouver Police Department tried to identify people who might have consumed the milkshakes, but Senior Deputy Prosecutor Kasey Vu said Monday that none had turned up. Sharp apologized to his family and to Clark County during his sentencing. Clark County Public Health Director Dr. Alan Melnick has said there is no significant health risk to consuming a drink contaminated with urine.

But the storm is also impacting people across the country, even Kentucky and southern Indiana residents.  Hurricane Ian made landfall as a Category 3 storm in western Cuba on Tuesday, with winds up to 120 mph. and is now barreling toward Florida. Henny Stewart is a former radio and TV personality in Jacksonville, Florida. “The weather is beautiful,” Stewart said. “As they say, ‘the calm before the storm.'” Jacksonville is not expected to take a direct hit from Ian, but Stewart says there are still a lot of people preparing for the worst and panic-buying. “It reminds me of COVID,” Stewart said. “People running in the stores, panicking, running to the back of the store for the water, for the toilet tissue, and there is none.” All of it has some Louisville area residents changing their vacation plans. Jennifer Armstrong is a travel consultant with Louisville-based Travelmation, and is already making adjustments and exit plans for clients traveling to and from Florida. “I’ve had to move a client that was going in, and I’ve had to move them back a little farther,” she said. “They have small children and they really just don’t want to take that chance. So they’re just — they’re cutting their vacation short by two or three days.” Armstrong recommends a Plan B for anyone traveling to Florida during hurricane season. “If something would happen…if you drove there, can we get you to Georgia? Can we get you to Alabama? Can we get you somewhere as an option if you have to get out?” she said.  Meanwhile, Henny says she’s at least a few hours away from the area expected to take a direct hit, but her latest trip to the store showed the panic buying is still out of control. “They had just gotten in a whole pallet of generators, and by the time I was walking out of the store, they only had two left,” she said. “They were grabbing generators, like they were M&Ms.” Kentucky’s Transportation Secretary has issued an official order to help speed up things for emergency crews heading to Florida. Joe Manchin on Tuesday abandoned his push to speed up the permitting process for energy projects as part of a government funding package, bowing to bipartisan opposition that had complicated efforts to pass a spending bill before the fiscal year ends at midnight Friday. Removing the permitting legislation is likely to make it much easier to pass a spending bill that will keep the government running through mid-December and provide more aid to Ukraine. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the removal of the energy provisions shortly before the Senate took its first test vote on the funding Tuesday evening. It was clear that, with Manchin’s plan included, Democrats were falling far short of the 60 votes needed to proceed. While lawmakers are again waiting to the final moments of the fiscal year to keep the government running, they are confident they will do so. Neither party is interested in a shutdown heading into the critical midterm elections Nov. 8 that will determine which party is in charge of the House and Senate. The spending measure Democrats unveiled this week provides about $12.3 billion in assistance related to Ukraine, including training, equipment, weapons and direct financial support for the Ukraine government. The assistance would be on top of some $53 billion Congress has already approved through two previous bills. The measure excludes the White House call for spending $22 billion to respond to COVID-19, and $3.9 billion to fight against an outbreak of the monkeypox virus. Republican lawmakers were overwhelmingly opposed to the health funding. At least 10 Republican senators would have to support the measure to overcome procedural hurdles and advance in that chamber. The most contentious piece of the legislation was Manchin’s plan to streamline the permitting process for energy projects and make it easier for a pipeline project in his home state and Virginia to proceed. Manchin in a statement confirmed he had asked Schumer to remove the permitting language from the bill. He said he was holding to his belief that “we should never come to the brink of a government shutdown over politics.” “It is unfortunate that members of the United States Senate are allowing politics to put the energy security of our nation at risk,” Manchin said. Both chambers of Congress must approve legislation by Friday, which is the end of the fiscal year, to prevent a partial government shutdown. It represents the last bit of unfinished business for lawmakers before the midterm elections in November. Both sides are eager to wrap up and spend time on the campaign trail, lowering the risk of a federal stoppage. Manchin, who chairs the Senate Energy Committee, had secured a commitment from President Joe Biden and Democratic leaders to have a vote on the permitting package in return for his support of a landmark law to curb climate change. While Republicans have voiced support for streamlining the permitting process for energy projects, some, including Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, panned the effort. “What our Democratic colleagues have produced is a phony fig leaf that would actually set back the cause of real permitting reform,” McConnell said on the Senate floor Tuesday. McConnell said he would vote against proceeding to the short-term spending bill if it included Manchin’s legislation and encouraged others to vote no, too, a powerful signal to GOP lawmakers. Other Republicans made clear they agreed with McConnell’s position. Sen. Richard Shelby, the ranking Republican on the Senate Appropriations Committee, said he would vote against the continuing resolution if it’s included. “We have made significant progress toward a Continuing Resolution that is as clean as possible. But, if the Democrats insist on including permitting reform, I will oppose it,” Shelby said. Top Democratic appropriators also said they were unhappy with the inclusion of Manchin’s proposal, but said keeping the government running took priority. “I am disappointed that unrelated permitting reform was attached to this bill. This is a controversial matter that should be debated on its own merits,” said Sen. Patrick Leahy, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. “However, with four days left in the fiscal year, we cannot risk a government shutdown; we must work to advance this bill.” The Mountain Valley Pipeline sought by Manchin would run through Virginia for about 100 miles. Manchin’s plan would expedite the pipeline and steer legal challenges to a different federal court. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said he opposes an expedited review for the pipeline and will vote against taking up the package if it included the pipeline language, another sign that lawmakers didn’t have the 60 votes needed to move forward. “We should pass a continuing resolution that is free of the unprecedented and dangerous” pipeline deal, Kaine said. The disaster assistance in the bill includes $2.5 billion to help New Mexico communities recover from the Hermit’s Peak/Calf Canyon Fire, the largest wildfire in the state’s history; $2 billion for a block grant program that aids the economic recovery of communities impacted by recent disasters and $20 million for water and wastewater infrastructure improvements previously authorized for Jackson, Mississippi. The bill would also provide an additional $1 billion for a program that helps low income households afford to heat their homes. There has been wide, bipartisan support for boosting support for Ukraine. The bill includes $4.5 billion to help Ukraine’s government provide basic citizen services and authorizes the president to drawdown $3.7 billion worth of equipment from U.S. stocks to support Ukraine’s armed forces. There’s also money to replenish U.S. stocks of equipment and munitions sent to Ukraine and to provide Ukraine with intelligence support and training. “With Russia holding fake elections to annex parts of Ukraine, the Ukrainian people urgently need our support to continue protecting their families and defending global democracy,” said Rep. CNN  —  Aerobic activities and weight training have health benefits on their own, but combining them could have even greater effect when it comes to disease prevention and early death risk. People who lifted weights once or twice per week, as well as the recommended amount of aerobic activities, had a 41% lower risk of dying early, according to a study published Tuesday in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. The research team based its findings on the self-reports and health information of nearly 100,000 men and women who participated in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial, which began in 1998 and followed participants until 2016. Participants answered questionnaires in 2006 about their exercise habits over the past year, and the authors of this latest study checked whether these participants had developed cancer or died by 2016. Older adults who did weight training without any aerobic activity reduced their risk of early death from any cause by up to 22%, a percentage that depended on the number of times they lifted weights within a week – using weights once or twice weekly was associated with a 14% lower risk, and the benefit increased the more times someone lifted weights. Those who did aerobic exercise lowered their risk by up to 34%, compared with participants who didn’t do any weight training or aerobic exercise. But the lowest risk – 41% to 47% – was among those who met recommended weekly amounts of aerobic activity (see below for guidance) and lifted weights once or twice per week, compared with those who weren’t active. The authors didn’t find a lower risk for death from cancer. Participants’ education, smoking status, body mass index, race and ethnicity didn’t impact the findings, but sex did – the associations were more significant among women, the researchers found. “The findings in this study are predictable, but it is significant that the authors provide the expected results as data in older people,” said Haruki Momma, a lecturer in the department of medicine and science in sports and exercise at Tohoku University in Japan, via email. Momma wasn’t involved in the study. “This is one of the most important points of this study,” Momma added. “Previous studies in older adults are limited.” The findings support the joint benefits of muscle-strengthening activities via weight training along with aerobic activity, in amounts that roughly align with current physical activity guidelines, the authors said. The World Health Organization recommends that older adults (ages 65 and up) do at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous aerobic exercise per week. Aerobic activities include walking, dancing, running or jogging, cycling, and swimming. Muscle-strengthening exercises should be done at least twice weekly if possible, according to the guidelines. Those can help prevent falls and related injuries, as well as declines in bone health and ability. Weight-training exercises you can do for 30 to 60 minutes include dead lifts, overhead dumbbell presses and dumbbell lateral raises, which involves using your back and shoulder muscles to lift light dumbbells so that your arms and body form a T shape. Important note: If you experience pain while exercising, stop immediately. Check with your doctor before beginning any new exercise program. The authors didn’t have information about the specific weight training or aerobic exercises participants did. “As the authors stated, there was no information about training intensity, training load, volume (sets and repetitions),” Momma said via email. “Therefore, the optimal prescription for regular muscle-strengthening exercises to prevent mortality remains unclear. However, this limitation is not limited to this study. Studies of muscle-strengthening exercise epidemiology are prone to this limitation.” But the researchers did have some ideas about how either exercise might help with prevention of disease or early death. Weight training can improve body composition or lean muscle mass, which has been previously associated with greater protection against dying early from any cause and cardiovascular disease. Having more lean muscle and less body fat can help with balance, posture and regulating cholesterol levels, Dr. Nieca Goldberg told CNN in March. Goldberg, the medical director of Atria New York City and clinical associate professor of medicine at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, wasn’t involved in the study. “We know that individuals with obesity are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease, glucose intolerance and some cancers, so improving that (health) profile is beneficial,” Goldberg said. “People who participate in regular activity … may also have a healthier outlook and have other healthy lifestyles.” The increased benefit from combining both exercises could be because the two work together to improve health, Dr. William Roberts, a professor in the department of family medicine and community health at the University of Minnesota, told CNN in March. A balanced regimen more closely mimics the lifestyles of our ancestors, he added. Additionally, muscle helps functions of the endocrine and paracrine systems, the authors said – the ones responsible for hormones and cell communication, respectively. Weight training might also be done in social settings, the researchers added, and having social connections has been linked with living longer. The authors noted that there could be measurement errors associated with participants recalling their exercise habits, and that the study might not be applicable to people of color and younger individuals, as most of the participants were non-Hispanic White and age 71 on average. Future studies that are more diverse, longer and attentive over time would be beneficial for understanding the relationships between these exercises and early death risk, the authors said. But for now, older adults who do either exercise should incorporate the other into their daily lives, Momma said. “Some physical activity is better than none at all,” Momma said. “Because the fitness levels and chronic conditions among the elderly vary with (the) individual, please be as physically active as your abilities and conditions allow.”

Governments must decide how to characterize the technology within existing laws, how those existing laws apply and to what extent new tech requires new legal restrictions. Governments can take action in a variety of ways: through new legislation, by revising regulations and other policies under existing law, or through litigation. Many national governments and international bodies are having exactly this conversation as to the metaverse, with significant possible ramifications for metaverse companies, their business partners and end users. EU  On Sept. 14, 2022, Thierry Breton, the European Union’s Commissioner for the Internal Market, published “People, technologies & infrastructure – Europe’s plan to thrive in the metaverse.” In part, Breton signaled confidence in existing law on metaverse issues, noting that “With the Digital Services Act (DSA) and Digital Markets Act (DMA), Europe has now strong and future-proof regulatory tools for the digital space.” But the commissioner also clearly indicated that the work of regulating the metaverse is just starting, announcing the launch of the Virtual and Augmented Reality Industrial Coalition, “bringing together stakeholders from key metaverse technologies” to develop a roadmap for further development. Breton stressed safety and competition concerns, promising that “we will not witness a new Wild West or new private monopolies.” South Korea  South Korea’s National Data Policy Committee announced on Sept. 23, 2022, that it would develop regulatory amendments specific to the metaverse. The Committee is chaired by South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck-soo and co-administered by the Ministers of Science and ICT and the Minister of Interior and Safety. The announcement focused on the metaverse as an issue that could “lead the success of national competitiveness.” The Committee found specifically that the South Korean framework that exists for videogaming was insufficient to deal with metaverse issues. Earlier in the week, Vice Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, Ahn Hyoung-hwan, met with a metaverse platform provider to discuss growing concerns over South Korean minors being subjected to sexual harassment on metaverse platforms. Japan Earlier this year, Japan announced creation of a Web 3.0 Policy Office under the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) to formulate metaverse-related policies. The Ministry noted that “as metaverses become new personal interfaces especially among younger generations such as Generation Z, digital spaces and assets could become much more important” and that Web 3.0 entrepreneurs may be departing the country for less-regulated options. The technology is supposed to help police pinpoint the exact location of gunfire. “Anything that we can do to help curve crime, I support,” said Cleveland resident Leon Stevenson. RELATED: Councilman wants to bring tech that listens for gunshots to Cleveland to combat crime Stevenson has been living in Cleveland off and on for more than 60 years, with his roots first beginning on 113th Street and St. Clair. “It’s just a difference than when I was growing up,” explained Stevenson. A place he tells News 5’s Remi Murrey once filled the city with vibrancy is now unrecognizable in his eyes. “We need anything that can change just the violence because seeing these young men drop daily and the ones that are trying to do the right thing are just living in fear,” said Stevenson. On 113th and St. Clair, there are homes and even a high school, but those visiting will also find several memorials because as Councilman Kevin Conwell puts it, crime is a big issue in his ward, and he wants something done. “They’re sick and tired of being sick and tired of hearing gunshots at night,” said Conwell. “As you saw on 113th, we have all these memorials, and they’re all over Cleveland and we need a way to comfort these mothers,” said Stevenson. The city first conducted a test trial in Cleveland’s Union Miles Park area, helping police get a more precise location of gunfire. Now in a new agenda ahead of Wednesday’s safety committee meeting, city leaders hope to extend and expand their existing ShotSpotter license to 33% of Cleveland’s population in neighborhoods like Glenville and Collinwood where gun violence is an issue. To do this, the city has requested more than $2.7 million coming from a portion of Cleveland’s Coronavirus Local Fiscal Recovery Fund. “When the bad guys find out that we know exactly where they’re shooting from, I feel it will slow it down,” said Conwell. The American Civil Liberties Union of Ohio, disagrees, pointing out several flaws. “I think one of the first things when you’re talking about gunshot technology, gunshot detection technology, is ‘is it effective in the first place,” said ACLU Spokesperson Gary Daniels. Daniels also questions if this technology will lead to over-policing. “This is not something that Cleveland and other communities should be pursuing. We keep trying to approach these types of problems that concern everybody. We keep looking at the end of things rather than the beginning of things,” said Daniels. “I hope that we can all come together one day and have an answer and work these things out,” said Stevenson. Repeat Sex Offender Sentenced To 10-Year Prison Term For Possessing Images Of Child Rape And Abuse – Department Of Justice https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/repeat-sex-offender-sentenced-to-10-year-prison-term-for-possessing-images-of-child-rape-and-abuse-department-of-justice/ Seattle – A 58-year-old Seattle man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to ten years in prison for possessing images of child rape and abuse, announced U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.  David C. Martin was on Washington State Department of Corrections supervision when he was arrested and charged federally in April of 2020.  In sentencing Martin to lifetime supervised release following prison, U.S. District Judge James L. Robart said the sentence was due to “the need to protect society from Mr. Martin.” “Mr. Martin has a shocking and extensive criminal history — with 15 convictions for sex crimes, including 11 for indecent exposure,” said U.S. Attorney Nick Brown.  “During this lengthy prison term, and the supervision that follows, I hope he gets the mental health treatment he needs to end the cycle of recidivism.” According to records filed in the case, Google Inc. first alerted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) that a specific account was uploading images of child rape and abuse.  The account was shut down and the matter was referred to the Seattle Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.   Seattle Police determined Martin owned the account and served a court authorized search warrant on Martin and seized his electronic devices.  Forensic analysis revealed the devices contained hundreds of files depicting child rape and sexual abuse. Martin has previously been convicted of Child Molestation 3rd Degree in Pierce County Superior Court (2001); Indecent Exposure in King County Superior Court (2009); Indecent Exposure in King County Superior Court (2015); and Voyeurism in Clark County Superior Court (2016). Due to those prior convictions Martin faced a mandatory minimum 10 years in prison. Speaking to the court, Martin said he now understood how viewing child pornography revictimizes those who suffer child sexual abuse. Noting all the prison time he has served Martin said, “I’ve wasted my whole life.” The case was investigated by Homeland Security Investigations in coordination with the Seattle Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) and the Washington State Department of Corrections. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Cecelia Gregson and Hillary Stuart.

If you think the travel industry will continue to rebound and that the global consumer will travel more over the long term, buying a travel ETF could provide healthy investment returns. Investing in travel ETFs The global travel industry is a large space that spans multiple sectors of the economy. On one end are industrial companies such as airlines, vehicle makers (including RVs or bikes, for example), and energy companies that make moving people possible in the first place. On the other end are destinations such as theme park and cruise line operators, restaurants, and accommodations such as hotels and rental properties. It’s also the only ETF focused on the airline industry, an absolutely essential business for the travel space. The U.S. Global Jets ETF was launched in 2015. The annual fee is 0.6%, which works out to $6 per year deducted from the ETF’s performance per $1,000 invested. The majority of the U.S. Global Jets ETF’s portfolio is dedicated to U.S. airline operators. One-third of assets are invested in Southwest Airlines (NYSE:LUV), Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL), and American Airlines (NYSE:AAL). There are also stocks of international carriers in the mix, as well as a few online travel booking stocks. But by and large, the ETF will perform on the same plane as U.S. airline stocks. This fund is for investors who think air travel volumes will gradually increase over time. 2. PowerShares Dynamic Leisure and Entertainment ETF The PowerShares Dynamic Leisure and Entertainment ETF is from large investment company Invesco (NYSE:IVZ). The ETF has been around since 2005 and has amassed more than $900 million in client funds. It charges a 0.55% annual fee. The ETF is a more well-diversified travel industry offering. Although it is limited to 30 stocks in the leisure and entertainment industry, companies in the portfolio include businesses such as event promoter and venue manager Live Nation Entertainment (NYSE:LYV), hotelier Marriott International (NASDAQ:MAR), and online travel giant Booking Holdings (NASDAQ:BKNG). The PowerShares Dynamic Leisure and Entertainment ETF has underperformed the S&P 500 Index since the fund was started, largely due to the start of the pandemic in 2020. 3. ETFMG Travel Tech ETF As its name implies, the ETFMG Travel Tech ETF is the most cutting-edge fund on our list. It has $188 million in funds under management and charges 0.75% per year. This is also a newer ETF. Its inception was at the start of 2020, just before the pandemic began. Since launching in February 2020, the ETFMG Travel Tech ETF has drastically underperformed the S&P 500. However, a rally could eventually be in order, especially since a little more than half of the fund is invested in online and highly profitable travel software stocks such as Airbnb (NASDAQ:ABNB) and Booking Holdings. There are also ride-hailing businesses such as Uber (NYSE:UBER) in the mix, as well as smaller travel agencies and planning companies. 4. Defiance Hotel, Airline, and Cruise ETF The next ETF is also a fresh offering, having launched over the summer of 2021. The Defiance Hotel, Airline, and Cruise ETF was built to capture investor interest in a potential rebound in the global travel industry, although the portfolio hasn’t met those expectations. The fund manages more than $37 million and charges 0.45% a year. The Defiance Hotel, Airline, and Cruise ETF is comprised of 56 stocks. The name indicates the portfolio’s composition. Top holdings include Marriott International, Delta Airlines, and major cruise line Carnival (NYSE:CCL). Although it has lost to the market overall in its short existence, the ETF could be a top pick for investors who want focused exposure to lodging accommodations, air travel, and cruises. 5. ALPS Global Travel Beneficiaries ETF Another recent ETF offering, the ALPS Global Travel Beneficiaries ETF has only accumulated about $12 million in funds since launching in the autumn of 2021. It charges 0.65% in annual fees. Although still small at this stage, the ALPS Global Travel Beneficiaries ETF aims to be a well-diversified investment option. Top stocks include airplane manufacturer Boeing (NYSE:BA), entertainment conglomerate Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS), and payments and travel company American Express (NYSE:AXP), as well as many other businesses already mentioned above. Its diversified approach to travel and adjacent industries could serve the ETF well in the years ahead. 6. AdvisorShares Hotel ETF This last ETF, by far the smallest with a little more than $6 million in client funds under management, is another niche travel offering. The AdvisorShares Hotel ETF focuses on hotels, accommodations, casinos (gaming), and related travel sub-industries. As an actively managed fund, it has a higher expense ratio of 0.99% per year. The fund managers focus on profitable businesses that have a dominant position among their competitors. As of this writing, the top three stocks in the portfolio are oil and gas worker housing specialist Target Hospitality (NASDAQ:TH), resort and vacation property manager Bluegreen Vacations Holding (NYSE:BVH), and Marriott. With its focus on profitable companies that haven’t been hit as hard by the pandemic as other travel companies, the ETF has held up relatively well so far compared to some of its peers on this list. However, since most of its holdings are real estate stocks, it may not have the same growth potential as other travel ETFs.
