Circadian Rhythms Company Arcascope Raises $2.85 Million To Accelerate Its Go-To-Market And Advance The Science Of Chronomedicine PR Newswire
Circadian Rhythms Company, Arcascope, Raises $2.85 Million To Accelerate Its Go-To-Market And Advance The Science Of Chronomedicine – PR Newswire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/circadian-rhythms-company-arcascope-raises-2-85-million-to-accelerate-its-go-to-market-and-advance-the-science-of-chronomedicine-pr-newswire/ Arcascope, a circadian rhythms technology company, has just raised a $2.85 million seed round to accelerate the commercial rollout of its innovative, evidence-based offering for shift workers and their employers, while expanding into new application areas.  The company, founded by 3 PhD experts in sleep science, is launching its validated circadian management platform, bolstered by clinical data showing marked improvements in sleep and fatigue.  Interest in circadian rhythms has grown rapidly in recent years, with new attention being paid to circadian disruption, as in jet lag, and the emerging field of chronomedicine, or the idea of timing drugs to maximize efficacy and minimize toxicity.  , /PRNewswire/ — Arcascope, a healthcare technology company solving the massive problem of circadian rhythms disruption caused by modern life, today announces the closing of a $2.85 million seed round led by Supermoon Capital, with participation from Inception Health, New Dominion Angels, AIoT Health, Inflect Health, the Accelerate Blue Fund and the Monroe Brown Seed Fund, HealthX Ventures, and other well-respected angel investors.  Light exposure at night affects our health and ability to sleep. Image shows a person working on a computer and experiencing light from a computer and an overhead light. Shift workers’ jobs put their health at risk. Image shows a nurse working at night, but unable to sleep during the day. Screenshots from Arcascope’s Shift app. Circadian health is an often ignored dimension of sleep health. Image shows a person sleeping in a bed. The company is launching its validated circadian management platform, currently accessible through the smartphone app, Shift, which addresses the pressing unmet needs of shift workers. Working nights causes profound disruption of the body’s internal circadian clock, which has been linked to increased risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. Clinical research, spearheaded by the Arcascope team, has shown that tracking this disruption in real world contexts and making personalized behavioral interventions can improve health.  “Circadian science is in a renaissance, and Arcascope is leading the way in the development of technologies to optimize our temporal health,” says Daniel Forger, a Professor of Mathematics and Professor of Computational Medicine & Bioinformatics at the University of Michigan and the company’s CSO.  Despite increasing evidence for light and behavioral interventions that can help shift workers improve their circadian health, few resources have existed for these workers until now. With Arcascope’s sleep and circadian digital twin technology, years in development, there is finally a solution for helping shift workers to adjust their body’s internal clock to fit the demands of their jobs. With this new funding, Arcascope will expand its technology to the Android market and help more enterprise customers retain staff, reduce absenteeism, and improve the health and wellbeing of their workers. Long term, the company is excited to lead development in the field of chronomedicine, enabling pharmaceutical companies, researchers, and individuals to benefit from optimizing the timing of drugs and treatments.  “Arcascope is at the forefront of the rapidly growing field of chronomedicine,” said Grayson Judge, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Supermoon Capital. “The company’s circadian rhythm technology offers a new class of time-optimized interventions that will extend and enhance lives.” Previously supported by more than $2 million in non-dilutive funding from the National Institutes of Health, the company is led by an award-winning team with deep technical knowledge. The CEO, Olivia Walch, is an applied mathematics PhD who previously won grand prize at two international hackathons and whose prior apps have been downloaded more than half a million times; she is also a cartoonist whose work has been featured in the Washington Post, The Nib, and the volume she co-edited on the mathematics of gerrymandering, Political Geometry. The CTO, Kevin Hannay, was the recipient of SIAM Life Sciences Early Career award for his work modeling human circadian rhythms, and the CSO, Daniel Forger, is an internationally known researcher in sleep and circadian rhythms and author of Biological Clocks, Rhythms, and Oscillations: The Theory of Biological Timekeeping from MIT Press. Arcascope recently won the Well Living Alliance’s Home as a Hub for Health (H3) competition from Delos and the Mayo Clinic, in recognition of their efforts to transform the home environment into one that promotes healthy living.  About the company:  Arcascope is a circadian rhythms technology company building a clinically validated platform to help people reclaim control of their time. Leveraging signals from wearable devices, we provide personalized behavioral recommendations and environmental integrations to help shift workers adapt quickly to changing work schedules, travelers adjust faster to new time zones, and people of all backgrounds improve their long-term health and happiness. https://www.arcascope.com ([email protected]) About Supermoon Capital: Supermoon is a venture capital firm that backs visionary entrepreneurs around the world building the future of sleep. Sports Illustrated Expands Golf Coverage, Acquires Morning Read – Sports Illustrated https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/sports-illustrated-expands-golf-coverage-acquires-morning-read-sports-illustrated/ A new chapter in Sports Illustrated’s golf coverage is about to begin. Today The Arena Group, which publishes Sports Illustrated, announced the formal acquisition of Morning Read, which was owned by Buffalo Groupe. As a reader, you may have been aware that SI.com and Morning Read have been working together as editorial partners for more than a year. That partnership turned out to be a win for both companies, but most importantly, it was a boon for readers, because together SI and MR reached farther and deeper with coverage and created a must-read daily destination for golf enthusiasts. So, now what? To put it simply: Sports Illustrated’s golf coverage is about to go to another level. Here is what this new chapter means for you. First, subscribers to Morning Read newsletters will continue to receive them in inboxes six days a week, with travel- and equipment-focused editions on Tuesdays and Fridays. (And if you aren’t signed up for those free newsletters, what are you waiting for?) SI’s golf homepage address remains the same and has a new look, and expect it to look and feel more dynamic as SI Golf evolves. Next, a brief reminder: some of the greatest sportswriters ever to wield a notepad have graced SI’s pages while covering this game, from Grantland Rice, Herbert Warren Wind and Dan Jenkins, to Frank Deford, Rick Reilly, Alan Shipnuck and Michael Bamberger. The SI.com Vault is a treasure trove of some of the greatest game stories, features and profiles ever written about golf. A fan can get lost in it for a long time. Frankly, there are worse ways to spend a weekend. Now we’re ready to add to that storied history with more news, features and analysis every day. Count on SI.com’s golf coverage to be an industry leader for original reporting. (For recent examples, see our news about LIV Golf’s 2023 schedule, or our interview with Phil Mickelson.) Our top reporters in the field, Bob Harig and Alex Miceli, are industry stalwarts who combined may have the entire PGA, LPGA, European and LIV Golf tours in their respective rolodexes. They, along with Senior Editor John Schwarb, will join SI Senior Writers Michael Rosenberg and Stephanie Apstein to give us quite possibly the most robust golf news team in the business. And we aren’t stopping there: we’re also hiring a new reporter to join our crew as we continue to grow. Our evolution will expand beyond tour news – we plan to bolster our coverage for other topics that interest golf fans, including equipment, travel destinations, and gaming and gambling. Look for more new features coming soon in those areas, plus many more. It’s an exciting time on the golf beat, and we wouldn’t be here without you. The Metaverse In China: Who Will Lead Fashions Charge? WWD WWD
The Metaverse In China: Who Will Lead Fashions Charge? WWD WWD
The Metaverse In China: Who Will Lead Fashion’s Charge? – WWD – WWD https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-metaverse-in-china-who-will-lead-fashions-charge-wwd-wwd/ Two main factors have driven the most important shifts in China’s fashion market over the last decade: the migration of the population to the mobile internet and the emergence of new communication channels. In the next decade, the rapid advancement of technology is likely to drive further evolution of the digital economy. The combination of the metaverse, creative design and fashion consumption will lead the industry into the next era and likely cause further disruption. Amid this digital evolution, who is defining the “rules of the game” in the new world of technology? WWD China has been involved in and witnessed a number of fashion metaverse events during the “Golden September and Silver October” period for the industry in China. In this market, the disruptive power of the metaverse is moving from chaos to a new stage. In fact, from big data to cloud computing, from blockchain to digital twin, from AR, VR, MR to XR, as well as perceptual interaction, optical microscopic imaging and more, most of the achievements made in the past decade in technological development are reflected in the emerging world represented by the word “metaverse.” Although international fashion brands from Gucci, Balenciaga and Givenchy to Nike and Vans are at the forefront of exploring the metaverse, Chinese fashion brands such as JNBY and Li Ning are also actively examining the idea despite their late involvement. It must be admitted that, considering what’s likely to be the huge scale of the metaverse in the future, global fashion companies are on a learning curve about the concept. As a result, both Chinese and international brands are to a certain extent still at the same starting line of this new era. Web 3.0 with Chinese characteristics and Chinese opportunities While China may have some advantages over the U.S. in building a metaverse platform, the challenges remain daunting. China has led the world in digital retail penetration over the past decade. Behind this lies an industry conducive to metaverse development. Consumers are extremely dependent on smartphones, and a variety of applications cover clothing, food, housing and transportation, resulting in the generation of massive amounts of data. But at the same time, challenges to rapidly develop the metaverse exist, such as how to use consumer information to generate value while still maintaining data security. For example, how to leverage the decentralization enabled by the metaverse to break down barriers and realize the free flow of data and connection between platforms and applications. In addition, brands now face moving beyond the sheer hype around the new concept to focus instead on how to implement the technologies themselves. L’Oréal Group has its own way of constructing the metaverse in Paris in terms of the fundamental technology and cross-department communications. But the industrial environment and the maturity of technology in China are very different from Europe and America. As L’Oréal China’s consumer center project leader Lan Tingyuan said, “The prologue of the metaverse is arriving in China though still in the very early stage. In the future, the logic of ‘people, goods and field’ [in other words, customers, product and stores] in the retail field will continue to play a role in the metaverse space.” The same disparity is reflected in the NFT sector, where the Chinese government has pegged NFT assets to the digital renminbi in a regulatory and supportive manner to create a Web 3.0 with Chinese characteristics. This is to some extent conducive to the development of the fashion metaverse. In addition, according to Liu Jinyao, co-chairman of the board and group chief executive officer of Activation Group, the pioneer in the field of metaverse marketing, global Web 3.0 revenue in the fashion and luxury industry is expected to reach $50 billion in 2030, and the potential market for luxury groups will expand by about 10 percent. In China alone, the value of digital collections is expected to be around $4.2 billion by 2026. It is easy to conclude from this that its huge market size is a unique advantage in China’s economic development. With a clear view of the underlying logic of the metaverse and continued efforts around its technologies, China is leveraging the metaverse to breed new opportunities. How to take the lead over rivalry fashion companies At the 2022 WDCC, Activation together with luxury brand Shanghai Tang created a Chinese style mood of mountains, rivers, lakes and seas, and water flowing within a metaverse venue called “The Blossoming Flower in Shanghai in the Symbiosis of Real and Virtual.” Human and virtual models were digitally twinned for a fashion show in a simultaneous and synchronized manner at the same venue, which became the first of its kind in the world. Meanwhile, Shanghai Fashion Week, Xintiandi and China’s top designers collaborated to create a digital fashion show, released in the form of an NFT to be collected and “tried on” by consumers, presenting a preliminary metaverse path within the fashion world. Anta released a complete set of digital works, from digital people to digital fashion and digital scenes, during China International Fashion Week, becoming a pioneer among Chinese brands’ efforts in the metaverse. Li Ning acquired the copyright and secondary creation rights of Bored Ape No. 4102 by buying its NFT and then established the “Bored Ape Club — Li Ning Branch in China.” It plans to launch a series of clothing under this name, offering Chinese consumers an opportunity to have a taste of the metaverse. As Style3D’s founder Liu Chen said, there is a lot of technology support behind the fashion metaverse. In the current industry, one category is the metaverse of digital fashion and the other is the digital version of fashion. The former is a lay out of the metaverse marketing narrative through metaverse IP, while the latter is a digital way to represent the physical world. The coexistence of the two to create the virtual fashion world is likely to be an ongoing trend. How can we grasp the trend? Culture and technology are the keys to wining in the market. Culturally, the setting of the metaverse IP, the construction of the world view and creation of the virtual brand space assets are the foundation for a brand to enter the metaverse. Given that, how is a brand to communicate with both users and partners? The key is cultural resonance, which will enable brands and users to co-create together in the metaverse space. As Hong Boming, CEO and creative director of K-Boxing Fashion, said: “The rise of Web 3.0 and the metaverse will favor the more contemporary interpretation and expression of Chinese culture. In the future, there will be younger consumers who will pay to buy because of their understanding, exposure and liking of the culture, and the metaverse makes the consumption chain shorter. Relatively introverted [Asian] culture like Chinese culture can be better expressed, applied and passed on through immersive experience in the metaverse.” Technology is undoubtedly the infrastructure of the metaverse that will enable virtual fashion made by brands in future to be more immersive, personalized and to go to market more quickly. In China, digital creators and technology companies are working together to provide the fashion industry with the tools, scenarios and content to enter the metaverse faster. For example, regarding the “digital infrastructure” of the metaverse, the technology company Style3D does digital simulation, with a domestic flexible body simulation engine, based on the creativity of Chinese designers and the strengths of the textile and garment industry. The firm aims to become the most powerful industrial software in China, helping to empower more designers and further drive the digitalization of the entire fashion sector. From past experience, it is easy to see that during the rapid development of the digital economy, social media reduced the importance of traditional media channels for consumers and spawned the birth of numerous direct-to-consumer brands. The emerging metaverse will not be spark one single change in the internet age, but rather a combination of the Renaissance and the Industrial Revolution, leading to significant transformation across business, technology, the humanities, science and technology, art and even cultures and lifestyles. In the years ahead, who will seize the opportunities it creates?

China Alleges U.S. Spy Agency Hacked Key Infrastructure And Sent User Data Back To Headquarters – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/china-alleges-u-s-spy-agency-hacked-key-infrastructure-and-sent-user-data-back-to-headquarters-cnbc/ Beijing has for a long time accused the U.S. of carrying out cyberattacks on Chinese targets. But more recently, it has accused the U.S.’s National Security Agency of hacking specific targets. Beebright | Istock | Getty Images China accused a top U.S. spy agency of stealing Chinese user data and infiltrating the country’s telecommunications infrastructure, according to a report published Tuesday, which lays out details of the alleged cyberattack method. Chinese state media last week first reported on an alleged attack by the U.S. National Security Agency on China’s government funded Northwestern Polytechnical University and promised that more details would follow. Tuesday’s report from China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and cybersecurity company 360, lays out the specific ways the alleged attack was carried out. The report adds further tension between the U.S. and China in the cyber sphere. Beijing has for years accused Washington of carrying out cyberattacks, but rarely discloses details of specific incidents. This new report is a change in approach from China. The report, published in the state-backed People’s Daily newspaper, claims the NSA began with a man-in-the-middle attack on the Northwestern Polytechnical University. This is where a hacker intercepts digital communication between two parties. The NSA was able to get into the university’s network, get the credentials of people who worked there, which allowed the U.S. agency to further penetrate the systems, the report alleged. When in the network, the NSA was able to get further access to sensitive data, eventually remotely getting into the core data network of a telecommunication infrastructure operator, the report claimed. As part of the attack, the NSA was able to get access to the data of people in China with “sensitive identities” and send that information back to the agency’s headquarters in the U.S., the report alleged. The NSA was not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC. The report from China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center and 360 lays out several reasons why the attack is being attributed to the NSA. Of the various hacking tools used, 16 of them were identical to ones that were dumped online starting in 2016 by a group called the Shadow Brokers, which managed to get access to some of the NSA’s techniques and methods. NSA hackers also carried out attacks during U.S. working hours and stopped during public holidays such as Memorial Day, the report claims. The report also said that the attackers used American English, the devices associated with the hackers had an English-language operating system and they used an American keyboard for input. Allegations of the NSA’s activity toward Chinese infrastructure is another point of conflict in the technology and cyber arena between the U.S. and China. Competition between the world’s two largest economies in areas from semiconductors to artificial intelligence has ramped up over the last few years. For its part, the U.S. has accused China of massive hacking operations. Federal Bureau of Investigation Director Christopher Wray said in February that China’s cyberattacks have become “more brazen, more damaging, than ever before.” Wray accused China of trying to steal U.S. information and technology.

A Conspiracy-Fueled Push To Count Ballots By Hand Gains Traction – Minnesota Reformer https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-conspiracy-fueled-push-to-count-ballots-by-hand-gains-traction-minnesota-reformer/ MADISON, WI – NOVEMBER 20: Representatives for President Donald Trump, left, looks over a ballots during the presidential recount vote for Dane County on November 20, 2020 in Madison, Wisconsin. Hand counting ballots would take a long time, and be less accurate than machine tabulation. Photo by Andy Manis/Getty Images. Nye County, a rural enclave in Nevada, has positioned itself as the epicenter of a Donald Trump-fueled conspiracy about the security of electronic vote tabulators.  The Nye County Commission voted in March to make the county one of the first to act on the false stories that machines that count votes are rigged. County Clerk Mark Kampf, who has falsely claimed that Trump won the 2020 election, has said that volunteer voters there will hand count the roughly 30,000 ballots expected in the November election. Across the country, Republicans aligned with Trump have directed ire at electronic voting machines, with Republicans in at least six states introducing legislation this year to ban the use of ballot tabulators (Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, New Hampshire, Washington and West Virginia). In Minnesota, GOP activists in Carver and Sherburne counties have pushed for hand counting. Over 90% of U.S. election jurisdictions currently use electronic tabulators, with only the smallest counties opting to count votes by hand.  Many of the conspiracies around voting machines after the 2020 election centered on technology from Dominion Voting Systems. Lawyers for Trump claimed with no basis that Dominion employees worked with outside groups, liberal donor George Soros, and Venezuela to steal the presidential contest from Trump. Dominion has filed several defamation lawsuits against those who peddled the conspiracies, including Minnesota pillow mogul Mike Lindell.  Voting experts say that using hand counting as the default method to count ballots, which requires that all voters cast paper ballots, is incredibly expensive, burdensome, and time-consuming. “This is totally unnecessary,”  said Jonathan Diaz, senior legal counsel with the Campaign Legal Center. “There is no evidence or reason to suggest that ballot tabulators don’t work.”  In fact, research shows that vote tabulators are more accurate than hand counts, which allow for a vast amount of human error, especially when the people counting ballots are overworked and tired around an election.  Tabulators are typically certified by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and jurisdictions almost always test them before an election to ensure their functionality and accuracy. Jurisdictions often hand count smaller groups of ballots after a tabulator is used to verify the accuracy of results.   Tabulators also allow for accessibility features to assist voters with disabilities who cannot hand mark a paper ballot. The Bipartisan Policy Center, a think tank that uses ideas from both parties, recommends pairing machine tabulators with an audit of paper ballots. “This balance minimizes the potential for human error during vote counting while maintaining a strong system of manual error-checking to unearth discrepancies that may arise during tabulation,” they write in an explainer.  Diaz said he suspects that those pushing for hand counting aren’t actually concerned with the security of tabulators.  “I don’t think that the push for hand counting paper ballots is really motivated by concerns about accuracy or technology,” he said. “I think it’s actually just an attempt to slow down the process and inject more confusion and make things more difficult for election workers.”  Nye County To hand count all of its ballots, Nye County plans to have teams of three people look at batches of 50 ballots. Kampf said he has already enlisted 57 volunteers to help with the process, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Kampf did not respond to a request for an interview. While Nye County will hand count its ballots this year, it’ll also tabulate its votes with electronic machines. Officials have said the goal is to eliminate the use of machines for future elections, but using both methods this year allows the county to avoid new state regulations for counties that only conduct hand counts.  In late August, Nevada’s secretary of state’s office announced temporary regulations to take effect Oct. 1 for the general election, including a requirement for bipartisan counters. Nevada law doesn’t outlaw hand counting,  and the office wanted to be prepared if more counties decide to switch.  Voting experts said hand counting shouldn’t be permitted, and therefore does not need to be regulated. In testimony submitted to Mark Wlaschin, deputy secretary for elections, the Campaign Legal Center explained why hand counting ballots would help neither accuracy nor speed.  “A hand counting requirement would not only delay the reporting of results, but would also be severely disruptive to county officials’ ability to fulfill their critical responsibility to conduct the election securely and accurately,” attorney Julie Hochsztein wrote.  The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada filed a lawsuit against the state after the regulations were announced, alleging that they deprive Nevadans of their rights to a uniform, statewide standard for counting votes. The group declined to comment on the pending litigation.  “The temporary regulation threatens to unleash electoral chaos,” the complaint says, noting that “votes cast in different counties, different precincts, or different contests may be counted very differently.”  Current Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske is term-limited. Jim Marchant, an election denier who is the Republican nominee to replace her, has been one of the most vocal forces behind the state’s push to institute hand counting. He has said that if elected, he would ditch electronic vote machines.  Democrat Cisco Aguilar, who is facing Marchant in November, told States Newsroom that he worries about the future of elections in Nevada if Marchant wins.  “What he’s doing is irresponsible and dangerous,” Aguilar said. “He’s not a serious leader but the threat he represents is extremely serious.” Esmeralda County in Nevada has also switched to hand counting, but the county is the least populous in the state with just 1,030 residents in 2020, according to U.S. Census data. Still, it took the county more than seven hours in the June primary to count 317 ballots. At that rate, it would have taken Clark County, Nevada’s most populous county, 6,375 hours, or more than 265 days, to hand count the 288,683 ballots cast in its June primary. Larger counties could no doubt devote more staff, volunteers, and resources to counting, but the process would undoubtedly require the county to miss the vote certification deadline. The longer the public has to wait for election results, the more time candidates have to sow distrust in the results and for false theories and information to spread.  Outside Nevada In Arizona, Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake and secretary of state candidate Mark Finchem, both of whom have said that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump, filed a lawsuit with unfounded allegations about the security of electronic vote tabulators and seeking the hand counting of ballots.  They claimed that the lawsuit wasn’t aimed at invalidating the 2020 election results — Cyber Ninjas, which conducted an audit of the vote in Maricopa County, conducted a hand count and found that Joe Biden actually won by more votes than the official margin — but instead about future elections.  In response to the lawsuit, election administrators testified that hand counting would be extremely expensive and require immense manpower. They also said that electronic voting machines aren’t connected to the internet, and can’t be hacked. A judge dismissed the suit in August, and Lake and Finchem have appealed that ruling. If Lake and Finchem win in November, they’ll be in a position to change how the state counts its ballots. Arizona law does not require the use of electronic vote counting machines. The secretary of state also has the power to decertify machines, so Finchem could do that and refuse to certify new ones.  In New Hampshire, groups opposed to electronic tabulators figured out a way to force election officials in large counties to hand count some ballots in Sept. 13’s primary, despite the widespread use of AccuVote optical scan machines in the state which are not connected to the internet and cannot be hacked.  Conservative-leaning groups shared posts online urging voters to write in candidate names, even if the candidate was already printed on the ballot. Ballots with write-in candidates are separated for hand counting.  Secretary of State David Scanlan said the effort slowed down the release of results by hours in some counties.  “It really stresses the system when you have poll workers who have been at it for 12 to 16 hours now having to count all these ballots at the end of the night,” Scanlan told a local reporter with the Keene Sentinel. “It probably increases the chances for errors.” Our stories may be republished online or in print under Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. How To Find Travel Insurance For Severe Weather Forbes

How To Find Travel Insurance For Severe Weather – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-to-find-travel-insurance-for-severe-weather-forbes/ Editorial Note: We earn a commission from partner links on Forbes Advisor. Commissions do not affect our editors’ opinions or evaluations. When severe weather strikes, even the best-laid vacation plans can fall apart. A hurricane might disrupt your cruise route or a blizzard could shut down your destination airport. If you buy a comprehensive travel insurance plan well in advance of your trip, you will be better prepared to take severe weather in stride. The right travel insurance plan can compensate you for weather-related travel woes, but it’s important to know what your policy covers—and what it doesn’t. Compare & Buy Travel Insurance Does Travel Insurance Cover Severe Weather? The best travel insurance plans package together several types of coverage that can protect you financially if severe weather causes travel delays, interruptions or cancellations. The key is to make sure the travel insurance plan you buy includes the types of coverage you need and lists severe or inclement weather as a reason you can file a claim for reimbursement. What qualifies as severe weather will be defined by your policy, but often includes: Windstorms Hurricanes Tornadoes Fog Rainstorms Hailstorms Snow storms Ice storms Be sure to shop for a travel insurance policy that specifically addresses your severe weather concerns. Plans from these companies offer good hurricane and severe weather coverage: GoReady John Hancock Insurance Agency Seven Corners Tin Leg The types of insurance coverage you should look for in a travel insurance plan for severe weather include: Trip cancellation Trip delay Trip interruption Also, look for additional coverage options, such as: Missed connection. WorldTrips offers additional benefits if severe weather causes you to miss a connecting flight. Travel inconvenience. AIG’s Travel Guard Deluxe plan has coverage for certain travel inconveniences, such as arriving in the mountains to ski and finding the resort closed because of inclement weather. Trip Cancellation Insurance and Severe Weather If you need to cancel your trip to the Bahamas because a hurricane caused the Nassau airport to shut down, you can turn to your trip cancellation insurance. This coverage will reimburse 100% of your insured trip cost, as long as you are canceling because of a problem—such as severe weather—listed in the policy. There is an exception. In order to file a successful trip cancellation claim, you need to have purchased your travel insurance plan before the severe weather becomes a “known event.” So, if a hurricane near your vacation destination has already been named, it’s too late to buy travel insurance for hurricane coverage. Also, check for specific timelines for trip cancellation due to a hurricane at your destination. For example, to make an insurance claim your destination may have to be under a hurricane watch issued by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration within three days of your scheduled departure date, and you may have to cancel at least 14 days after your policy’s effective date. It’s important to note that your destination usually must be inaccessible or uninhabitable due to severe weather for trip cancellation benefits to kick in. Sometimes severe weather strikes at home, too. If your primary residence is uninhabitable after a named hurricane hits, you can be eligible to file a trip cancellation claim, as long as you bought the policy before the storm was named. You can also make a trip cancellation claim if your house is uninhabitable due to damage from a natural disaster listed in your policy. That way you can stay home to take care of the damage but still recoup your trip costs with an insurance claim. “Cancel for any reason” travel insurance upgrade If you want maximum flexibility for scrapping your trip, add “cancel for any reason” travel insurance (CFAR) to your travel insurance plan when you buy it. This will typically increase the cost of your policy by 50% but will allow you to cancel no matter your reason. There are some CFAR caveats to keep in mind: You typically need to buy CFAR coverage within 14 days of making your first trip deposit. In order to file a successful CFAR claim, you need to cancel your trip at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure (so, not at the last minute). CFAR generally reimburses 50% or 75% of your insured trip cost, depending on your policy. Trip Delay Insurance and Severe Weather Say you’re waiting at the airport and your flight is delayed due to a blizzard at your destination. This is where trip delay insurance can be used. Trip delay coverage can reimburse you for the loss of any pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses if you experience a delay that’s longer than the waiting period listed in your policy. For example, the specified waiting time can be six hours or 12 hours. So if that blizzard causes you to miss a day of skiing that you paid for in advance, you can file a claim for this loss, as long as severe weather is listed as an acceptable reason in your policy. Trip delay insurance can also help pay for a hotel room and meals you buy during a layover due to severe weather. There is typically a daily maximum and overall maximum limit per person for trip delay benefits. Trip Interruption Travel Insurance and Inclement Weather Travel insurance usually doesn’t cover minor weather frustrations such as rain that puts a damper on your beach vacation. But if unexpected severe weather causes you to end your trip early, trip interruption insurance can help. For example, if a tornado strikes at your destination preventing access to the area or making the region uninhabitable, you can file a trip interruption claim. If a tornado blows through your neighborhood back home while you’re away and makes your house uninhabitable, you’re also eligible for trip interruption benefits. Most travel insurance companies have complimentary 24/7 helplines for policyholders. If you need to return early due to inclement weather, representatives can help you book a new flight home. Trip interruption insurance covers the extra expense of that last-minute ticket and reimburses you for pre-paid, non-refundable costs you lose by leaving early. But again, only if you’re flying home early because of a problem listed in your policy. “Interruption for any reason” travel insurance upgrade For more freedom to end your trip early for any reason, some travel insurance companies offer an “interruption for any reason” travel insurance. This premium upgrade reimburses you for up to 75% of your trip cost, provided you insure the entire value of your trip. It kicks in after a certain waiting period, generally 48 hours or 72 hours into your trip. Like CFAR, you usually need to buy “interruption for any reason” coverage within 14 days of booking your trip. When Is Severe Weather Not Covered by Travel Insurance? Travel insurance generally excludes coverage of “known events.” Once a natural disaster is a known threat (and no longer “unforeseen”), it likely won’t be covered if you buy new a travel insurance plan. For example, if you’re scheduled to leave for a cruise in a week and a new hurricane is named, you can’t quickly buy travel insurance to cover hurricane-related delays or trip interruptions. This is the best argument for buying travel insurance early, says Jeff Rolander, director of claims at Faye Travel Insurance. “It’s best to buy travel insurance as soon as possible after booking your trip (such as your flights or accommodation). That way, you’ll be protected against unexpected events that might cause you to delay or cancel.” Many travel insurance companies offer a “free look” period after you buy a policy. Take this time to read the fine print of the travel insurance plan and decide if the policy meets your needs. If not, cancel it for a refund. Compare & Buy Travel Insurance

Restaurant Owner Convicted Of Torching Business For Insurance – Mid Hudson News Website https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/restaurant-owner-convicted-of-torching-business-for-insurance-mid-hudson-news-website/ GOSHEN – An Orange County Court jury Monday convicted a Newburgh man of arson, conspiracy, reckless endangerment, insurance fraud and tax fraud for torching his Town of Newburgh restaurant. Zef Gjurashaj, 60, faces 25 years to life in prison on the arson conviction when sentenced in December in connection with the fire that destroyed Andiamo’s Restaurant at 5025 Route 9W in September 2017. Prior to the trial, Gjurashaj’s co-defendant, Marina Gjurashaj, 38, of Yonkers, the wife of his nephew, pled guilty to arson and conspiracy for her role in setting the fire. As part of her plea agreement, she testified against Zef Gjurashaj at trial. Prosecutors argued that knowing the business was in steep financial decline, Gjurashaj instructed his niece by marriage how to start the fire by removing a plug from a propane line in the kitchen and spraying an ignitable liquid on the floor, then opening the propane line and lighting the liquid. The fire was so intense that it put the firefighters, and Gjurashaj’s wife, who was present at the time of the fire, at grave risk of death. After the fire, Gjurashaj presented to his insurance company fraudulent proof of loss seeking payment for damage caused by the fire and testified under oath about the fire. The investigation also revealed he underreported cash income from the restaurant as part of his state tax filings. “Arson for profit is, by nature, an incredibly challenging crime to prosecute because of the complexity of the evidence as well as because, as in this case, the perpetrator often intentionally attempts to destroy any link between themselves and the crime,” said District Attorney David Hoovler. “This fire, which was set solely for financial gain of the defendant, created an extremely dangerous situation for first responders who valiantly fought the fire. The utter disregard for human life and property exhibited in this case is appalling.”

Walmart Enters The Metaverse With Roblox Partnership Sourcing Journal
Walmart Enters The Metaverse With Roblox Partnership Sourcing Journal
Walmart Enters The Metaverse With Roblox Partnership – Sourcing Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/walmart-enters-the-metaverse-with-roblox-partnership-sourcing-journal/ Walmart is making another move to generate buzz among younger consumers, entering the metaverse in collaboration with Roblox and joining the likes of Nike, Tommy Hilfiger and Ralph Lauren among others on the online gaming platform. The retail giant is launching two new interactive experiences within Roblox called Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play. Both experiences are geared toward a different swathe of the Gen Z demographic, with Walmart Land focused on bringing the best fashion, style, beauty and entertainment items directly to Roblox’s global community of over 52 million daily users. And for Walmart’s Universe of Play, the retailer describes the digital playground as “the ultimate virtual toy destination in Roblox.” ”We’re showing up in a big way—creating community, content, entertainment and games through the launch of Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play,” said William White, chief marketing officer, Walmart U.S. in a statement. “Roblox is one of the fastest growing and largest platforms in the metaverse, and we know our customers are spending loads of time there. So, we’re focusing on creating new and innovative experiences that excite them, something we’re already doing in the communities where they live, and now, the virtual worlds where they play.” Walmart Land will feature a variety of features, including a virtual store of merchandise, or “verch,” for a user’s avatar; a virtual Ferris wheel giving users a bird’s-eye glimpse of the digital world; and unlockable tokens and badges that can be earned in various games and competitions. Walmart Land debuts with Electric Island, House of Style and Electric Fest as its three major experiences. Inspired by the popularity of music festivals, Electric Island includes an interactive piano walkway, a dance challenge, a Netflix trivia experience featuring “Stranger Things” star Noah Schnapp and a DJ booth where users can learn to mix different beats. House of Style features a virtual dressing room, a strike-a-pose challenge, an oversized cosmetics obstacle course and a roller-skating rink, offering products from cosmetics brands including pop star Halsey’s Af94, UOMA by Sharon C., ITK by Brooklyn & Bailey, Lottie London, Bubble and more. And in October, users can jump into Electric Island for “Electric Fest,” a motion-capture concert celebration featuring performances from artists such as Madison Beer, Kane Brown and Yungblud. Through Walmart’s Universe of Play, the Roblox community can explore different toy worlds to earn coins for virtual goods, or complete challenges to build a personal trophy case, unlock secret codes and more. Universe of Play includes five new games that offer experiences featuring products and characters from L.O.L. Surprise!, Jurassic World, Paw Patrol, Magic Mixies and Razor Scooters. Users can try and collect as many virtual toys as they can to earn coins redeemable for their avatar “verch.” Toys will hang all around, and a Walmart blimp will regularly drop toys throughout the experience. Universe of Play will also feature e-mobility items like hoverboards, which an avatar can use to travel through the universe faster. Users will encounter a Sharper Image drone that helps them discover some of the hottest toys of the season. The Walmart Land and Walmart’s Universe of Play experiences can be accessed on Roblox.com on any desktop or laptop device. Walmart’s partnership with Roblox is one of many today in retail, particularly in the fashion realm where brands like Nike, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Pacsun, Vans, Forever 21, and Dick’s Sporting Goods have all created their own experiences with the gaming platform. The retailer quietly filed for seven metaverse-related trademarks in December 2021. Some of the trademarks indicated interest in making or selling virtual goods and offering users virtual currency, as well as NFTs. The partnership with Roblox comes at a time when Walmart is trying to bring more customer-facing online technologies to shoppers. The retail giant is delving deeper into virtual try-on capabilities for its apparel consumers, first launching the “Choose My Model” fit technology in March, where shoppers could view what a garment looks like on a model based on their height and clothing size. Earlier this month, Walmart expanded the technology to allow consumers to view what the product would look like on themselves by taking a selfie with a mobile device. The virtual fitting room features, powered by Zeekit, the platform Walmart acquired in 2021, illustrate the retail giant’s focus on both its elevated fashion ambitions and a desire to capture the Gen Z demographic. Walmart has teamed up with TikTok, Gen Z’s favorite social media platform, in the past to host livestream events, and has also launched livestreaming shows across additional social networks like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

Bankrupt Crypto Lender Voyager To Sell Assets To Sam Bankman-Frieds FTX For $1.4 Billion CNBC
Bankrupt Crypto Lender Voyager To Sell Assets To Sam Bankman-Frieds FTX For $1.4 Billion CNBC
Bankrupt Crypto Lender Voyager To Sell Assets To Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX For $1.4 Billion – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bankrupt-crypto-lender-voyager-to-sell-assets-to-sam-bankman-frieds-ftx-for-1-4-billion-cnbc/ Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and chief executive officer of FTX Cryptocurrency Derivatives Exchange, speaks during an interview on an episode of Bloomberg Wealth with David Rubenstein in New York, US, on Wednesday, Aug 17, 2022. Jeenah Moon | Bloomberg | Getty Images Customers of beleaguered cryptocurrency lender Voyager Digital may find some solace in the news that FTX, the bitcoin exchange founded by billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, is set to take on the company’s assets after winning a bankruptcy auction. After several rounds of bidding, FTX’s U.S. subsidiary was selected as the highest bidder for Voyager’s assets, the companies said in a statement late Monday. The bid was valued at roughly $1.4 billion, a figure that includes $1.3 billion for the fair market value of Voyager’s digital assets, plus a $111 million “additional consideration” in anticipated incremental value. Voyager declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July after a tumultuous drop in digital currency prices left it unable to redeem withdrawals from its customers. The firm’s demise stemmed in part from the collapse of Three Arrows Capital, a so-called hedge fund that took loans from other institutions, like Voyager, to make risky gambles on tokens — including the collapsed stablecoin terraUSD. In June, 3AC defaulted on borrowings from Voyager worth $670 million. Voyager hinted at a possible transition of its customers over to FTX U.S., saying the exchange “will enable customers to trade and store cryptocurrency after the conclusion of the Company’s chapter 11 cases.” The asset purchase deal will be presented to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York for approval on Oct. 19. The sale of Voyager’s assets to FTX U.S. is dependent on a vote by creditors, as well as “other customary closing conditions,” according to the statement. The move marks a potential step toward compensating users of Voyager, who have few legal avenues in getting paid the crypto they stored on the platform before it froze customer withdrawals. In bankruptcy proceedings, customers of crypto platforms are treated as unsecured creditors, meaning they’re not actually entitled to the crypto they purchased, and like other creditors would need to go through the courts to try to get their money back. Creditors of Mt. Gox, which went under in 2014, are still waiting to get repaid. Previously, Voyager claimed on its website and in marketing materials that users’ funds were protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, but this technically wasn’t true — Voyager’s cash deposits are kept with Metropolitan Commercial Bank, a New York-based lender. FDIC insurance only covers the event of failure of the bank, not Voyager. In July, the FDIC and the Federal Reserve sent Voyager a cease and desist letter ordering it to stop claiming it was FDIC-insured. Read more about tech and crypto from CNBC Pro In the crypto winter of 2022, Bankman-Fried has emerged as a savior to numerous firms that fell victim to the plunging value of digital tokens and resulting liquidity issues at their platforms. The 30-year-old quant trader-turned-crypto extraordinaire has been shopping for bargains amid the industry’s recent carnage. In July, FTX signed a deal that gives it the option to buy lender BlockFi after providing a $250 million line of credit. Bankman-Fried says he still has plenty cash to spend on further deals. And he may soon receive even more, with sources telling CNBC FTX is raising another $1 billion from investors in an upcoming financing round. – CNBC’s Kate Rooney contributed to this report

U.S. Department Of Education Awards Over $60 Million To Strengthen The Teacher Pipeline, Increase Educator Leadership, And Support Quality Teaching And Learning To Further Address Teacher Shortage | U.S – US Department Of Education https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-department-of-education-awards-over-60-million-to-strengthen-the-teacher-pipeline-increase-educator-leadership-and-support-quality-teaching-and-learning-to-further-address-teacher-shortage-u/ Today, the U.S. Department of Education (Department) is announcing new awards to further address the teacher shortage and help ensure long-term investments in teacher pipeline and development programs across the country. New investments under the Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) program, include 22 new three-year grants totaling more than $60 million, bringing the Biden-Harris Administration’s additional support for teachers through Fiscal Year 2022 grant competitions to more than $285 million. “We are treating our efforts to recruit, prepare, and retain a talented and diverse educator workforce with the same level of urgency we brought to reopening our schools during the height of the pandemic,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. “Now more than ever, we are supporting teacher preparation and development programs that provide educators with meaningful, relevant, and evidence-based strategies for promoting student success and social and emotional well-being. Today’s investment of over $60 million will support high-quality programs across the country that are truly raising the bar for professional development and embracing evidence-based and innovative and promising approaches, like Grow-Your-Own programs, to strengthen the teacher pipeline today, and in the years ahead.” The SEED program supports evidence-based practices that prioritizes educators’ growth across the continuum of their careers. In this year’s SEED competition, the Department directed funding to projects designed to support educator workforce through high-quality, comprehensive teacher preparation programs, including those with a strong track record of recruiting and placing underrepresented teacher candidates, and that include one year of high-quality clinical experiences. The Department also prioritized projects designed to help teachers create inclusive and equitable learning designed to meet students’ social, emotional, and academic needs. The National Center for Education Statistics’ (NCES) latest survey results on public school experiences with COVID-19 show that, as of August 2022, 53 percent of all public schools reported feeling understaffed entering the 2022-23 school year, and 69 percent reported too few candidates as the biggest challenge to hiring teachers. By investing in programs like SEED and focusing on the most pressing needs, the Biden-Harris Administration is helping to strengthen the teacher pipeline and provide long-term investments in the teaching profession. Supporting Effective Educator Development (SEED) grant awardees include NATIONAL The National Center for Teacher Residencies’ (NCTR) Centering Equity, Building & Scaling Teacher Residencies project aims to increase the number of effective teacher residents from diverse backgrounds in underserved schools, districts, and subjects by boosting teacher residency programs across Connecticut, Delaware, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. NCTR will provide scaffolded technical assistance and support to develop and scale 14 teacher residency programs, 10 of which are located at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). LOUISIANA: The New Orleans SEED program aims to address New Orleans’ persistent teacher shortage problem by focusing on boosting pathways into the profession through the expansion of innovative and promising Grow-Your-Own pathways. Funding will help project partners build a robust, sustainable pipeline of local aspiring teachers to pursue the profession and become the next generation of effective educators in New Orleans’ underserved schools. By 2025, the project hopes to recruit, prepare, and place 550 teachers in underserved schools and have more than 200 high school students in the city’s teacher pipeline. MISSOURI: The Community Training and Assistance Center, Inc., a national non-profit organization, is using SEED support for Project Extended Impact (IMPACT) in partnership with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. IMPACT aims to increase Missouri’s supply of highly effective principals to improve teaching and learning, engaging 2,100 principals from across the state. SEED funding will help boost the capacity of Missouri principals to deepen their impact in three key areas: social and emotional learning; accelerated academic learning; and teacher recruitment, development, and retention. VMware Veteran Chad Reese Leads SolarWinds Global Channel Sales – ChannelE2E https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/vmware-veteran-chad-reese-leads-solarwinds-global-channel-sales-channele2e/ by Joe Panettieri • Sep 27, 2022 Chad Reese, president, sales and global channel, SolarWinds IT management software provider SolarWinds has hired VMware and IBM veteran Chad Reese as president of Americas sales and global channel. The move comes as SolarWinds strives to jumpstart growth after spinning off its N-able MSP software business in 2021. The backdrop: SolarWinds revenue was $176 million in Q2 of 2022, down slightly from Q2 of 2021. For the full year, SolarWinds expects total revenue of $715 million to $725 million — which is roughly flat compared to 2021, according to an August 2022 financial forecast for the business. In stark contrast, fast-growth rivals such as DataDog have successfully expanded across the infrastructure, application, data and cloud monitoring sectors. To wit, Datadog revenue was $406.1 million in Q2 of 2022 — up 74% compared to Q2 of 2021, the company said in August 2022. SolarWinds: Rebuilding Customer and Partner Trust Still, there are signs that SolarWinds is rebuilding customer trust after disclosing the infamous Orion supply chain software hack in December 2020. Among the anecdotal areas of improvement: Customer retention has improved to historical levels, CEO Sudhakar Ramakrishna said in August 2022. Seeking to build in that progress, Reese now leads sales at SolarWinds for the enterprise, mid-market, and SMB markets and the public sector in the Americas. Moreover, he is responsible for the company’s global channel ecosystem. Reese certainly has enterprise-class channel partner experience. Before joining SolarWinds, he was: VMware global head of sales for the commercial customer segment; and IBM vice president of cloud and SaaS for North America; and IBM vice president of the business partner organization for Europe. SolarWinds Hires Global Channel Chief: Executive Perspectives In a prepared statement about the hire, Andrea Webb, EVP, chief customer officer, SolarWinds, said: “Chad is a proven sales leader with experience serving multiple market segments around the world and will be a vital addition to our team as our model evolves and we execute our growth strategy. From creating global channel programs and alliances, evolving businesses to subscription and SaaS models, and growing and leading teams domestically and abroad, Chad has successfully done it. We look forward to the impact he’ll make on our business.” Added Reese: “It’s exciting to join the talented SolarWinds team during this time of positive momentum as the company executes its growth strategy focused on delivering platform-based technologies to accelerate business transformation. With a large, loyal global customer install base, a strong, historical renewal rate, an outstanding solution portfolio and roadmap, and a highly experienced senior leadership team, we’re well positioned for growth. My objective is to build a scalable, repeatable sales engine across all routes to market, and I’m excited to leverage my deep channel experience to work closely with our extended ecosystem to drive customer success globally. We have an amazing opportunity to make a difference in the marketplace, and I look forward to partnering with our teams to drive the company’s next phase of growth.” VMware Executive Departures Continue Meanwhile, Reese joins a growing list VMware executive departures amid that company’s pending sale to Broadcom. Additional departures include: Senior VP of Global Support Karen Egan; Head of Cybersecurity Strategy Tom Kellermann; Chief Revenue Officer Sandy Hogan; and Director of Sales for Asia Pacific Region Sangeeta Giri.

A Conspiracy-Fueled Push To Count Ballots By Hand Gains Traction – Ohio Capital Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/a-conspiracy-fueled-push-to-count-ballots-by-hand-gains-traction-ohio-capital-journal/ Nye County, a rural enclave in Nevada, has positioned itself as the epicenter of a Donald Trump-fueled conspiracy about the security of electronic vote tabulators. The Nye County Commission voted in March to make the county one of the first to act on the false narratives that machines that count votes are rigged. Dominion has filed several defamation lawsuits against those who peddled the conspiracies. Nevada law doesn’t outlaw hand counting and the office wanted to be prepared if more counties decide to switch. In New Hampshire, groups opposed to electronic tabulators figured out a way to force election officials in large counties to hand count some ballots in last week’s primary, despite the widespread use of AccuVote optical scan machines in the state which are not connected to the internet and cannot be hacked. “It probably increases the chances for errors.” GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX Our stories may be republished online or in print under Creative Commons license CC BY-NC-ND 4.0. Medical Tailored Meals Part Of Conference On Hunger Nutrition Health USA TODAY
Medical Tailored Meals Part Of Conference On Hunger Nutrition Health USA TODAY
Medical Tailored Meals Part Of Conference On Hunger, Nutrition, Health – USA TODAY https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/medical-tailored-meals-part-of-conference-on-hunger-nutrition-health-usa-today/ MILTON, Mass. — Standing in the doorway of his new home, Bouba Diemé, sturdy and 6 feet 8 inches tall, doesn’t look medically fragile.  But the program manager and father of three has been waiting six years to reach the top of the local heart transplant list. And when he finally gets there — which could happen at any time — his body has to be ready for the surgery.  That’s why once a week for the last four years, the driver of a refrigerated van has dropped off five days’ worth of “medically tailored meals” at his house.  Diemé is one of about 2,000 people across Massachusetts and parts of Rhode Island who receives a weekly meal delivery catered to his taste and medical requirements. Many recipients are elderly, coping with multiple illnesses, and unable to shop or cook on their own. Others are children fighting cancer whose parents don’t have time or resources to make sure every calorie will support their fragile health. The idea of delivering regular meals to people with health problems began at scale during the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic when young men were dying alone of malnutrition because of their disease. Community Servings, which feeds Diemé, was born 32 years ago to fill that need and has provided meal deliveries since from its commercial kitchen in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston. It’s a model that nutrition experts hope will become a staple of the American system of social benefits. The White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition and Health, scheduled for Wednesday, will recommend a pilot program to cover medically tailored meals as part of Medicare Advantage plans. It is one of a laundry list of new plans proposed Tuesday by the Biden administration to “end hunger and reduce diet-related diseases and disparities.” The last such conference, held more than a half-century ago during the Nixon administration, led to the expansion of food stamps and other food supports that dramatically reduced starvation in one of the richest countries on earth. Congressional approval will be required for some of the Biden administration’s priorities, including the medically tailored meals pilot, investing in parks, and expanding food stamps with a focus on access to fruits and vegetables. Other programs, such as voluntarily reducing salt and sugar and placing nutrition labels on the front of packages, may call for private sector support. Revised food programs are urgently needed, experts said, at a time of rampant inflation and growing chronic health issues. At least 10% of the American public is “food insecure,” meaning they’re not sure where their next meal is coming from. And more than 40% of Americans have obesity, in part because the most inexpensive, readily available foods contribute to weight gain and poor metabolic health. Medically tailored meals like those offered by Community Servings, can help address both problems in the short run, with other programs needed to address hunger for the longer term, said Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, dean for policy at the Tufts Friedman School of Nutrition  Mozaffarian, one of the co-chairs of the task force which made recommendations to the White House conference, said he expects medically tailored meals and similar programs will be a centerpiece of any new national strategy to come out of the conference. “I would be shocked and disappointed if ‘food as medicine’ weren’t a prominent part of it. It’s so promising,” he said.  Today, a small percentage of Americans with the most serious health problems use up almost half of the country’s health care resources. They are admitted to a hospital, discharged to a nursing home, sent home, and then end up back in the hospital or nursing home several times a year. “Medically tailored meals have been shown to break that negative, vicious cycle,” Mozaffarian said. “They use the emergency room less, they get admitted to the hospital less, they go to nursing homes less, they feel better.” Plus, he said, although Medicaid and Medicare haven’t been allowed to fund medically tailored meals programs, such approaches could save the government money. “Even accounting for the cost of the food, the cost of a hospitalization or nursing home or emergency room visit is so much – is so wildly expensive  that just paying for the food is much more effective.” ‘GUARDRAILS’ NEEDED?: Telehealth fraud cost Medicare $128M in first year of COVID pandemic, feds say ‘You are not forgotten’   Community Servings runs a busy operation. Every morning, dozens of volunteers get a quick course on how to properly keep bacteria away from food. Then they don customized caps and wash up along a wall of stainless steel sinks. In one area of the kitchen, volunteers, under the watchful eye of a trained chef, chop onions and celery for soups and salads. Another weighs out precisely 4 ounces of barbeque chicken. Someone else nestles broccoli and a generous slice of cornbread into a container with the chicken.  “Two things we learned early on,” said David Waters, Community Servings’ CEO: People who are ill have no appetite. And “if you bring them mediocre food, they’re not going to eat it.” So Community Servings makes sure its offerings are well above what he was served in his high school cafeteria.  Every day, multi-gallon soup pots are filled with produce unsold at local farmer’s markets or gleaned from fields within a few hours’ drive. Stacks of yeasted dough rise while waiting to be hand-made into rolls.  Since its earliest days, Community Servings has been about helping people who feel sick, scared and isolated. “It’s sending the message: ‘We see you and you’re not forgotten,'” Waters said. Volunteers pack shopping bags with a week’s worth of meals. People who can only eat soft foods might get one set of options, while those with a heart condition like Diemé will get another, and a person who is malnourished, perhaps fighting cancer, might get a third, with extra protein and calories.  “Health care says to the patient: ‘This is what you need to do,'” and maybe hands the patient a piece of paper explaining the diet they need to follow, Waters said. But even those with a lot of privilege would struggle to meet such requirements. For a high-needs patient that’s simply impossible. “The system sets them up to fail.”   Research shows that bringing nutritionally tailored healthy meals to people with critical and chronic illnesses can save money.   In one 2018 study, people on medically tailored meals cost the healthcare system 16% less than those who didn’t receive the meals. The cost for six months of meals roughly equals one night’s stay in a hospital, Waters said. “Medically tailored meals are a very effective food insecurity intervention,” said Dr. Seth Berkowitz, who helped lead that study and is now at the University of North Carolina School of medicine. But there are still unanswered questions about how best to use medically tailored meals to improve health outcomes, he said via email. “I think there is still more we can learn about what combination of medical and social conditions medically tailored meals work best for, along with questions about the ‘dose,’ ‘duration’ .” Originally funded through federal HIV spending via the Ryan White Act, philanthropy has helped Community Servings thrive and expand, and now the nonprofit also holds contracts with the state and 18 insurance companies. The typical Community Servings recipient lives below 200% of the poverty level and needs anywhere from 2 weeks’ worth of meals at the end of life or a decade of food for someone living with HIV or severe diabetes, Water said. The aim is to get them over a crisis, model what healthy eating and portion control looks like, and stabilize them, “so they can go back to being independent,” Waters said. “We don’t want to create a dependent culture, but we want to make sure whatever their crisis is that we can support them through it.” Fighting disease with food     A handful of nutrition and hunger experts said they’re not really sure what to expect from the White House Conference, but they hope the outcome will include more support for food as medicine. “The role of nutrition in disease is poorly understood and not widely recognized,” said Dr. William Dietz, who directs the Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. “If that is an important emphasis that emerges from the conference, that could really open the door for a broader application of food as health and disease in the U.S.,” he said, including, he hopes, an expansion of food stamps and free school meals for every child. “Medically tailored meals and its use in patients is really a microcosm of the broader need for a more balanced diet with an emphasis on fruits and vegetables for the general population,” Dietz said. Nicole Heckman, director of food security programs at the AARP Foundation, said she sees medically tailored meals as an essential stop-gap for people in crisis. But they generally last just six months. Follow-on programs like food stamps are also needed, she said, to enable people to “continue purchasing the food they were introduced to” when on medically tailored meals, she said. The food stamp program, now known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program “is absolutely critical for folks with low income to be able to consistently afford the food they need to live a healthy and active life.” More than 3 million older adults don’t know that they’re eligible for food stamps, she said and missed out on more than $200 a month in benefits in 2018. And more than 37 million Americans over 50 live in poverty or “one life event away from slipping into it,” Heckman said. Older a...

Metafluence Announces The Usage Of Hyper-Realistic Metahumans In The Metaverse – GlobeNewswire https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/metafluence-announces-the-usage-of-hyper-realistic-metahumans-in-the-metaverse-globenewswire/ September 27, 2022 04:41 ET | Source: Metafluence LONDON, UK, Sept. 27, 2022 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Metafluence, an immersive, live, and influencer-driven social Metaverse with several virtual properties for influencers, brands, and everyone, has announced the usage of hyper-realistic metahumans in the Metaverse. While metahumans have existed for a long time, Metafluence is deploying them to its virtual city, Metafluence City. Metafluence City aims to connect brands, influencers, and their audience in the Metaverse. Through this city, Metafluence will grant users an opportunity to showcase and auction NFTs, organize meetings and conferences, set up e-commerce stores, buy virtual properties like plots of land, and regularly interact with influencers and brands globally. Launched on August 10, 2022, Metafluence’s hyper-realistic metahumans will advance widespread adoption and onboard more users to the emerging virtual world. Hyper-realistic Metahumans and the Metafluence City Metafluence has designed several hyper-realistic metahumans and is gradually deploying them into the Metaverse. The first metahuman, Luna, is a compassionate, kind, entertaining, super mysterious, and intelligent influencer who regularly educates users about the potential of artificial intelligence [AI] and how its global adoption can be a profitable venture. Luna loves to show her reaction to current AI, NFT, and Metaverse news on social media, and Metafluence hopes these reactions will help drive more users. Metafluence’s hyper-realistic metahumans are high fidelity and capable of replicating the owner’s physical appearance in a digital format. They are designed to imitate and mimic their owner’s behavior and serve as avatars on the Metaverse. Additionally, when successfully integrated with AI, as Metafluence plans, they can function independently as AI-built metahumans and influencers in the Metaverse. A Historic Day for the Metafluence Team Metafluence also launched the hyper-realistic city, Metafluence City, on August 10, 2022, alongside the metahumans. The Metafluence City is an influencer-driven, Metaverse-based city for brands, influencers, and millions of fans worldwide to conveniently buy virtual properties, socialize, and interact with millions of others. The Hyper-realistic world of Metafluence City is built on four fundamental pillars: virtual spaces (Land Plots and Metahuts), high-fidelity avatars (Metahumans), socialization, and monetization (new income models). Engraved as a historic day for the Metafluence team, August 10 saw, for the first time, Metafluence team members, influencers, community members, brands, KOLs, and fans spend ample time with their respective avatars. Since that unforgettable day, the Metafluence team has continued to regularly make updates to the virtual city to guarantee users a better user experience. The Metafluence Alpha Testing version of the virtual town was the team’s first foray into the global stage, offering exceptional features ranging from avatar-to-avatar interactions to group socializations, voice chat, text chat, creation of numerous avatars, video recording, etc. Metafluence, through these hyper-realistic metahumans and the Metafluence City, hopes to pioneer a new trend in the Metaverse. Many large companies and global brands have joined the Metaverse and Web3 trend. However, the critical problem still stays—Mass Adoption. Metafluence understands the barrier and how to knock it down, hence the development of an easy-to-use social metaverse platform incentivizing influencers to bring fans into their virtual spaces and keep them hanging around by engaging in one-to-one immersive formats. Thanks to its influencer-driven nature, Metafluence City will bring together audiences of various influencers from all nationalities and industries. About Metafluence Metafluence is the first influencer-driven Metaverse platform to provide users with a virtual city to connect with brands, influencers, and millions of fans. Through Metafluence City, Metafluence will allow users to showcase their NFTs, set up Metacommerce stores, organize meetings, and interact with others on a more personal level. Bluesound Serves Up New Wireless Audio Gear Sonos Killer? Audioholics
Bluesound Serves Up New Wireless Audio Gear, Sonos Killer? – Audioholics https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bluesound-serves-up-new-wireless-audio-gear-sonos-killer-audioholics/ Like Sonos… but better. I think it’s fair to say that this was the goal that the Lenbrook Group — parent company to NAD and PSB —  set for itself when launching Bluesound back in 2013. (In fact, Lenbrook even served as the Canadian distributor for Sonos in the mid 2000s.) But beating Sonos at its own game is no easy task. As I mentioned in my recent article about the company’s first automotive audio system, Sonos is easily one of the most successful new audio brands of the last two decades. Like Apple, it succeeds in part because its hardware and software are so deeply interconnected. Sonos also has the best user interface this side of Roon. With a lineup including the likes of PSB’s Paul Barton, Lenbrook’s engineering talent could run rings around the audio boffins at Sonos, or at any tech-focused consumer audio company. But Bluesound would need more than just good-sounding speakers and electronics in order to succeed. Taking on Sonos isn’t about building a product; it’s about designing a whole ecosystem. Plenty of other audio companies have tried to build their own wireless multi-room audio platforms, including heavy-hitters like Denon, Yamaha, and Bose. At the high-end of the market, companies like KEF, Bowers & Wilkins, and Devialet, have made their mark, but the high prices of those products naturally limit their customer base. Tech companies like Google, Apple, and Amazon have changed the game with their smart speakers, but most focus on the futuristic user experience, and not on sound quality. Bluesound came out of the gate with high-res music support, allowing its customers to enjoy 24bit/192kHz downloads in every room of the house. Now that high-res streaming is becoming more commonplace (hello, Apple Music), it’s surprising that Sonos speakers — not to mention Apple’s own HomePods — still haven’t caught up. For the Tidal crowd, Bluesound also handles MQA — a feature that looks increasingly unlikely to find its way into a Sonos speaker near you. With solid audio engineering, real-world prices, an excellent control app, and a better-than-Sonos feature set, Bluesound has come the closest to de-throning the king of multi-room wireless audio. Now the company has introduced three updated products for 2022, including the Node streamer/dac ($549), the Powernode streaming amp ($899), and the Pulse Soundbar+ ($899 or $999, depending on finish).   All three of these new products feature a powerful ARM Cortex A53 Quad-Core processor, which Bluesound says is 8 times faster than the chipsets found in previous generations of Bluesound architecture. The new processor may seem like overkill, but that’s kind of the point. According to Bluesound, all that extra power and speed make these products “ready for whatever technologies the future may hold.” In addition to the significant spec bump in the number-crunching department, the new Node and Powernode boast new DAC designs, improved functionality (more on this later), and fancy new touch-panel controls with proximity sensors. The Powernode also gets a big boost in power over the previous version. Meanwhile, the new Pulse Soundbar+ welcomes Dolby Atmos to the party. Since the beginning, Bluesound has set out to provide a modern hi-res multi-room streaming experience for customers who care about audio quality. We have seen the NODE and POWERNODE quickly become the go-to streaming components for discerning music lovers, because of our focus on high quality listening and on the software features that make the products – all the way back to our first generation – even better over time. This latest generation, once again, sets the bar for performance and value in their respective categories. — Matt Simmonds, Bluesound Product Manager   The new Node is a follow-up to the Node 2i from 2018, which represented a major sonic upgrade over the Node 2 that it replaced. This 4th iteration of Bluesound’s core streaming gadget seems mostly to be a refresh of the unit’s computational smarts and its input/output complement, so owners of the Node 2i needn’t rush to trade up. But the new unit does have an updated “audiophile-grade” DAC section based on the highly-capable-on-paper PCM5242 chip from Texas Instruments. While the Node looks virtually identical to its predecessor from the front, around back you’ll see one of its best new features: an HDMI eARC input. Bluesound wants the Node to be flexible and future-friendly, and “as comfortable in a two-channel TV system… as it is in an audiophile’s dedicated listening room… (providing) a hi-res experience no matter where it’s used.” Mated to a nice pair of powered speakers, the Node can be both a music-listening hub and a sound-bar replacement for movies, TV, and gaming. Of course, the Node also has an array of other digital and analog inputs and outputs, as did its predecessors. But one big upgrade would be easy to miss at first glance. While earlier Nodes included a USB input for connecting hard drives loaded with music files, an upcoming firmware update will allow the new Node to send digital data out via that same USB port to an outboard DAC. Until now, optical and coax were the only digital outputs available. Some DACs simply perform better via their USB inputs, and many require the use of USB to unlock certain features (such as MQA decoding and/or rendering). Having a high-quality digital output makes the Node easily upgradable. The user can start with the Node’s internal DAC and analog outputs, and then upgrade its performance by adding a better DAC down the road. But for many, the Node’s feature set will be even more important than its potential for end-game sound quality. Happily, the Node has an exhaustive list of features, including Apple AirPlay 2, voice control (via Siri, Amazon Alexa, or Google Assistant), and 2-way aptX HD Bluetooth, meaning you can stream from your phone to the Node, or from the Node to your wireless headphones. It’s also Roon Ready, and handles both Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect. The subwoofer output can be optimized for your setup, thanks to customizable crossover settings. Basically, if you were to say, “But does it do___?” The answer is yes, it does. Despite all of this flexibility, the BluOS control app is one of the more user-friendly on the market. Basic functions like play/pause, skipping tracks, and adjusting volume are also available as touch controls via a new, larger touch panel located on top of the unit. And thanks to a proximity sensor, the touch panel fades to black when it’s not being used, and lights up again when your hand moves toward it. Very cool.   The new Powernode does everything that the Node does, and also has an 80-watt integrated amp built in. There’s not too much else to say about it, really. The Powernode uses NAD’s HybridDigital amplifier platform, and its 80-watt power rating (into 8 ohms) is a substantial upgrade over the 60 watts produced by the Powernode 2i from 2018. Like the Node, the Powernode can connect wirelessly to Bluesound’s Pulse Sub+ subwoofer ($749), or via RCA to any subwoofer of your choice. One cool feature is the Powernode’s ability to transform a standard 2-channel rig into a 4.1-channel home theater. Just add a sub and a pair of Bluesound’s Pulse Flex 2i wireless speakers ($299 each) as rear channel additions, and the Powernode can deliver a wireless Dolby surround-sound home theater experience. How many stereo integrated amps can do that? In 2016, Bluesound launched the world’s first Hi-Res soundbar, setting the bar for audio excellence in the category that continues to this day. With the PULSE SOUNDBAR+, we continue to innovate and refine, making good on our commitment to bring hi-res, HiFi listening to everyday life, even in product categories that traditionally overlook the importance of audio quality. — Matt Simmonds, Bluesound Product Manager   Finally, the new $899 Pulse Soundbar+ is designed to be “the ultimate audiophile-grade soundbar that will satisfy any home entertainment need,” according to Bluesound. It represents a “full audio-chain redesign,” with advanced DSP processing made possible by that new ARM Cortex A53 Quad-Core chipset under the hood. The big new feature is Dolby Atmos support, served up via 8 audiophile-quality transducers driven by 120 watts of total power. Bluesound says the new amplification “packs a punch, allowing you to play loud and dig deep, with tight, musical control.” Acoustic design and speaker voicing were performed at Canada’s National Research Council. Like the Node and Powernode, the Pulse Soundbar+ is packed with features, including HDMI eARC, Apple AirPlay 2, and 2-way aptX HD Bluetooth. It can be paired wirelessly with the Pulse Sub+, or to the subwoofer of your choice via a wired connection. Again, a pair of Pulse Flex 2i wireless speakers can serve rear-channel duty, delivering a more immersive surround sound experience. The Pulse Soundbar+ features 2 onboard WiFi chips to prevent network latency, delivering “rock solid and zero-lag audio performance, even for demanding gaming applications.” The front panel sports new touch controls for quick access to basic functions. For ease of installation, the Pulse Soundbar+ comes supplied with a wall-mount bracket and a pair of “kickstand” feet. The optional white finish raises the price from $899 to $999.   Bluesound vs Sonos I would be interested in a comparison between the Pulse Soundbar+ and the $799 Sonos Arc soundbar, which has scored highly with reviewers, and is certainly a direct competitor. Of course, I don’t know how well these new Bluesound products will sell compared to their Sonos-branded counterparts, which enjoy both a huge amount of mainstream name recognition and a healthy advertising budget. But from an audio performance standpoint, I don’t think any cu...

Bitcoin Surges 7% To Top $20,000, Its Highest Level In More Than A Week, Even As Stocks Hit 2022 Lows – CNBC https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bitcoin-surges-7-to-top-20000-its-highest-level-in-more-than-a-week-even-as-stocks-hit-2022-lows-cnbc/ Bitcoin continues to trade in a tight range of $18,000 to $25,000 mark, keeping investors on edge about where the price is going next. The crytpo market has been plagued with a number of issues from collapsed projects to bankruptcies. Nurphoto | Getty Images Bitcoin topped $20,000 on Tuesday, hitting its highest level in the more than a week, but is still struggling to break out of its tight trading range. The world’s largest cryptocurrency was more than 7% higher at $20,265.95 at around 3:30 a.m. ET, according to data from CoinDesk. Bitcoin’s rally lifted the broader cryptocurrency market. Ether was up around 7% at $1,389.75. Still, bitcoin has struggled for direction, trading between $18,000 and $25,000 since mid-June after a crash saw nearly $2 trillion wiped off the entire crypto market since its peak in November. That market decline was driven by interest rate rises from central banks aimed a controlling rampant inflation as well as a wave of bankruptcies and insolvency issues that filtered through the crypto industry. Crypto investors have been watching monetary policy because digital currencies have been closely correlated to U.S. stock markets this year. Higher interest rates have put pressure on the S&P 500 and tech-heavy Nasdaq, which has filtered through other risky assets including cryptocurrencies. The U.S. Federal Reserve’s 0.75 percentage point rate hike last week marked a “major event” for crypto markets, according to Vijay Ayyar, vice president of corporate development and international at crypto exchange Luno. “This was broadly in line with market expectations and hence, we’ve seen a lot of that sentiment priced in,” Ayyar said. Interestingly, bitcoin’s rally, which began on Monday, happened despite a fall in U.S. stocks with the S&P 500 closing at its lowest level of 2022. Stock futures rose on Tuesday. So, there are signs that perhaps the correlation between crypto and stocks could be weakening. Meanwhile, investors are watching the U.S. dollar closely. The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against a basket of currencies, is up more than 18% this year. Bitcoin moves inversely to the dollar, so a strong greenback is negative for bitcoin. However, Ayyar said that the dollar index could be nearing its top which would mark a potential bottom for bitcoin. That could be a reason behind bitcoin’s surge. “Traders hence might also be positioning themselves accordingly,” Ayyar said.

State Approves Historical Marker For Ingles Ferry In Radford Cardinal News
State Approves Historical Marker For Ingles Ferry In Radford Cardinal News
State Approves Historical Marker For Ingles Ferry In Radford – Cardinal News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/state-approves-historical-marker-for-ingles-ferry-in-radford-cardinal-news/ The Virginia Department of Historic Resources has approved eight new historical markers. They are in the counties of Amelia, Fairfax, King and Queen, and Powhatan; the cities of Fredericksburg, Radford, and Richmond; and the town of Colonial Beach. The department advises that “DHR creates markers not to ‘honor’ their subjects but rather to educate and inform the public about a person, place or event of regional, state or national importance. In this regard, erected markers are not memorials.” After approval by the Board of Historic Resources, it can take upwards of three months or more before a new marker is ready for installation. The marker’s sponsor covers the required $2,880 manufacturing expenses for a new sign. Here’s the list, as described by the department: West Ford (ca. 1784-1863) West Ford, born enslaved in the household of George Washington’s brother John Augustine, was brought to live at Mount Vernon ca. 1802. Taught to read, write, and do arithmetic, he became a skilled carpenter and was freed at the age of 21. For more than 50 years he was a plantation manager at Mount Vernon, becoming well known in the area. Ford inherited more than 100 acres from Bushrod Washington in 1829; he sold the property and bought 214 acres here in 1833. This land became the nucleus of a vibrant free African American community that continued to expand after the Civil War. Ford, the “Father of Gum Springs” and one of the wealthiest Black men in Fairfax County, died at Mount Vernon in 1863. Sponsor: West Ford Legacy Foundation Locality: Fairfax County Proposed location: Richmond Highway (U.S. Route 1) at intersection with Fordson Road Great Exodus from Bondage The former Farmers’ Bank building at this intersection was once the home and workplace of John Washington (1838-1918), who early in the 1870s wrote a memoir of his life in slavery. On 18 April 1862, about eight months before the Emancipation Proclamation, Washington fled Fredericksburg and crossed the Rappahannock River to Falmouth, where Union forces had just arrived. He was among the first of more than 10,000 refugees enslaved in surrounding counties who escaped to Union lines and freedom over the next four months. These acts of self-emancipation accelerated a shift in federal policy that ultimately led to the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, ending chattel slavery in the United States. Joseph Jones, enslaved at birth, taught at Virginia Union University for 45 years. A minister, he served as corresponding secretary of the Baptist Foreign Mission Convention and installed many Black clergymen in pastorates. His wife, Rosa, earned a teaching degree from Howard University and studied at the New England Conservatory of Music. She taught music at Hartshorn Memorial College for decades and led the Woman’s Union Beneficial Department, an insurance company. Their son Eugene Kinckle Jones led the National Urban League and in 1906 co-founded Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Sponsor: Alpha Phi Alpha Alumni Brothers Locality: Richmond Proposed location: Near new entrance to Evergreen Cemetery James Horace Carter Lynched James Horace Carter, a 45-year-old African American husband and father, was lynched on 12 Oct. 1923 a mile southeast of here. Two weeks before the lynching, a white woman had admitted that Carter was the father of one of her children. He was charged with rape and arrested. While being driven by officers to the King and Queen County jail, a mob seized him from the car, shot him ten times (five in the face, four in the chest, and one in the back) while he was still shackled, and left his body in a ditch. Gov. E. Lee Trinkle offered assistance and the case was widely reported, but no one was prosecuted for the murder. The woman’s husband later used her admission of adultery as grounds for divorce. He and his wife, Mary Draper Ingles, resided on the river’s eastern side and operated a tavern and store on the western side. Migrants moving westward, coffles of enslaved African Americans, and well-known individuals such as future French king Louis Philippe I used this crossing on the heavily traveled Great Road. Virginia native William Clark crossed here in Nov. 1809 on a journey from St. Louis with his wife and son to visit family, conduct business in Washington, D.C., and make plans for the publication of the Lewis and Clark Expedition journals. Main St. Potomac River Oyster Wars Disputes over harvesting oysters in the Potomac River fueled violence between local watermen and Maryland’s fisheries police for many decades. Conflicts escalated after World War II as watermen violated Maryland law by dredging, rather than tonging, for oysters. When detected, they raced toward shallow waters with armed patrol boats in pursuit. After Maryland officers killed Virginian Berkeley Muse near here in April 1959, the fisheries police underwent extensive reforms, and the two states and the federal government finalized an agreement to regulate the river. In 1962 the U.S. Congress created the Potomac River Fisheries Commission, bringing an end to the era of violence. Sponsor: Colonial Beach Greenspace, Inc. Locality: Town of Colonial Beach Proposed location: Intersection of Irving Ave. and Monroe Bay Ave. Belmead Belmead, the Gothic Revival-style home of planter Philip St. George Cocke, was designed by Alexander J. Louise Drexel Morrell and her sister, Katharine Drexel—founder of the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament and a saint of the Catholic Church—were instrumental in establishing two schools here in the 1890s. St. Emma Industrial and Agricultural Institute (later St. Emma Military Academy), for many decades the nation’s only military school for African American young men, and St. Francis de Sales High School for Black and Native American young women educated thousands of students from across the U.S. and abroad before closing in the 1970s. Sponsor: DHR Locality: Powhatan County Proposed Location: Intersection of Bell Road and Cartersville Road Rosa L. As a leader in women’s clubs and African American reform organizations, Bowser sought improvements in health care, legal aid, support for young mothers, and education for disadvantaged children. She helped found the National Association of Colored Women, which worked against lynching and segregation and for women’s suffrage. Go With The Flow Ramona Journal
Go With The Flow – Ramona Journal https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/go-with-the-flow-ramona-journal/ When it comes to making art, things don’t always go as planned. Watercolor is notorious for this — no matter your degree of expertise with the medium, sometimes it will act in unpredictable ways.  Life is similar in this respect.  On a recent road trip, my car broke down. I was out of state and about 100 miles from my destination. While waiting for a tow, I could only think about how this might ruin my vacation. While my friends were seeing the sights, I spent an entire day on the phone trying to secure a service center that would take the car during Labor Day weekend — it was not easy. In hopes of not entirely wasting the day, on a whim I snagged a rideshare to a nearby “old town” for a decent meal and some entertainment. I found a vibrant art community, with galleries representing more than 30 local artists, as well as a ribbon cutting ceremony for a free little gallery situated along the main drag. Unlike a free little library, it stocked miniature pieces of art on tiny easels in what had to be a two-foot by two-foot square box. There was even an action figure patron! Over the weekend, I had several enlightening experiences that would not have occurred were I using my own car. I learned about local haunted and abandoned places from my Lyft driver, I heard a wild avalanche survival story from my tow truck driver, and I was able to enjoy the sights more as my eyes weren’t glued to the road. I’ve traveled cross-country several times and have taken many shorter road trips in between. Sure, flying is easier, but you just don’t get to enjoy these little Easter eggs scattered about. In the spirit of going with the flow, I had a much more memorable experience. These days, I’m trying to step outside the box a bit more. Whether visiting new or familiar places, I make it a point to simply observe. There is so much to see in the world and, surprisingly, there are so many ways to relate to others. A few months back, I created a travel journal with prompts that encourage you to be in the moment. It’s available on Amazon — just search my name — or you can use a blank bound book.  Take note of your intention for the day, the weather, your path and a texture from your surroundings, like a tree or rock. Listen to what others are saying, and if you’re up to it, strike up a conversation. Even if you’re just traveling to and from town for errands, it can be comforting to live the day mindfully. With the holidays around the corner, life will be getting more hectic. Be sure to take time, enjoy the moment, and go with the flow.  In the end, it’ll all work out.
