Southern Utah Defense Forces 3 Late Turnovers, Defeats Utah Tech 31-17 To Claim ‘Battle Of The Axe’ – St George News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/southern-utah-defense-forces-3-late-turnovers-defeats-utah-tech-31-17-to-claim-battle-of-the-axe-st-george-news/ Southern Utah University hosts Utah Tech in a WAC conference football game, Cedar City, Utah, Sept. 24, 2022 | Photo by Jeff Richards, St. George News / Cedar City News CEDAR CITY — Turnovers made the difference when Utah Tech and Southern Utah University renewed their rivalry on the gridiron Saturday night at Eccles Coliseum. Southern Utah University hosts Utah Tech in a WAC conference football game, Cedar City, Utah, Sept. 24, 2022 | Photo by Jeff Richards, St. George News / Cedar City News SUU forced three Trailblazer turnovers in the fourth quarter to secure a 31-17 victory in the first meeting between the two teams in 60 years.  “We came into the game leading the country in turnover margin,” SUU coach DeLane Fitzgerald said in a press conference after the win, adding that the T-Birds defense played well but didn’t force a turnover in the first half. “You go into halftime and you’re a little bit hesitant about what you’re saying to your defensive players,” Fitzgerald said. “We came out in the second half and it’s three to one turnover margin. That’s the difference in the game.” Utah Tech came out of the chute with a purpose, taking the opening kickoff down the field with a 13-yard run by Quali Conley and a 30-yard pass from quarterback Kobe Tracy to Deven Osborne. However the drive stalled when SUU stopped the Trailblazers on a 4th-and-1 play.   SUU stormed right back with a 1-yard touchdown run by Elijah Burns, set up by a 44-yard pass play from quarterback Justin Miller to receiver Isaiah Wooden. Wooden’s name is familiar to UTU fans as he played his freshman year in St. George when the school was still called Dixie State. Wooden transferred from there to Kent State and then to SUU this year as a fifth-year player. Wooden scorched his former team Saturday night, hauling in five passes for 129 yards and a score. “As far as for me, it felt like a rivalry,” Wooden said. “I mean, there’s a lot of people on that team I know. They have a good coaching staff as well. So I just wanted to show them that I could play. Don’t forget about me, that’s basically it.” Southern Utah University hosts Utah Tech in a WAC conference football game, Cedar City, Utah, Sept. 24, 2022 | Photo by Jeff Richards, St. George News / Cedar City News Utah Tech tied the game 7-7 on its ensuing drive with Tracy’s 13-yard scoring strike to Rickie Johnson, whose spectacular leaping grab in the corner of the end zone evened the score late in the first quarter.  Miller’s 65-yard touchdown bomb to Wooden gave the home team a 14-7 advantage in the second. Conley’s catch-and-run of 47 yards then set up Utah Tech on the SUU 20-yard line. Former Pine View High School kicker Connor Brooksby nailed a 20-yard boot and the Trailblazers cut the lead to 14-10.  An answering 47-yard field goal from Micah Pettit and a 3-yard TD pass from Miller to Ethan Bolingbroke just before halftime put the home team ahead for good 24-10. Utah Tech kept pace with a touchdown pass late in the third frame. Tracy lofted a jump ball to the end zone, where Joey Hobert beat three defenders to pluck the pill from the sky and somehow stay in bounds. It was a one-score game, 24-17, entering the final quarter. The Trailblazers had a golden opportunity to tie the score after freshman linebacker Jared Fotu recovered a Miller fumble that stopped SUU on the 1-yard line. But UT had to punt the ball back, and SUU ran a 7-play, 60-yard scoring drive capped by Bobby Cole’s 9-yard scoring burst with 4:55 remaining in the contest. SUU’s Rodrick Ward snared his second interception of the game to secure the victory. Utah Tech tallied 376 yards of total offense on the night, with 302 of those yards coming through the air. Tracy wound up 19-of-36 passing for 277 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, Conley posted his second-career 100-yard rushing game and racked up 112 yards on the ground to go with 50 yards receiving. Hobert finished with six catches for 105 yards to go with his touchdown. The sophomore receiver continued to add to his impressive start, becoming the first Trailblazer in the program’s NCAA era to record four-straight 100-yard receiving games and catch at least one TD pass in his first four career games.  Miller threw 352 yards on 25-of-33 passing and two touchdowns, while Burns led SUU with 61 yards rushing to go with his first-quarter score. SUU finished with 449 yards of total offense. Utah Tech (1-3, 0-1 Western Athletic Conference) returns home next Saturday for a WAC match-up against Abilene Christian. Kick-off inside Greater Zion Stadium is set for 7 p.m. Meanwhile, SUU (3-1, 1-0) goes on a long road trip next Saturday to play Eastern Kentucky.  The two teams are scheduled to meet again in six weeks, when the Trailblazers will host the T-Birds in a rematch on Nov. 5 at Greater Zion Stadium for homecoming. 9 New Non-Stop Flights From The U.S. To Sunny Destinations This Winter – Travel Off Path https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/9-new-non-stop-flights-from-the-u-s-to-sunny-destinations-this-winter-travel-off-path/ Last Updated 3 mins ago Now that the cold is surreptitiously creeping in and the chaos of the summer travel season is well behind us, it’s finally time to look ahead and start planning for this year’s winter break. There are endless possibilities, and Americans are certainly spoiled for choice, with at least 9 new non-stop flights from the U.S. to sunny destinations being announced. Whether it’s the turquoise waters of the Riviera Maya or the world-class service found in the Dominican resorts, most Americans will not have to worry about long layovers in Southern hubs like Orlando and Miami when flying Caribbean-bound. And believe us, although fares are inevitably higher this year compared to 2019, they’re well below the summer rates. But in order to get the best bang for your buck, you will need to book those flights as soon as possible: 1 – Connecticut to Jamaica Lowest fare this season: $226 one-way Connecticut has never been particularly favored by big airlines when it comes to adding routes to beach hotspots. However, as of this year, following a demand surge, the largely overlooked airport is rising in importance, with Spirit Airlines set to launch the first-ever Bradley International-Sangster International flights. Beginning December 15, Hartford residents will have a brand new air bridge to Montego Bay, all year round, four times a week. As for route specifics, both Airbus A320neo and A321neo fleets have been deployed, asserting Spirit’s plans of establishing a regional hub in Bradley International. 2 – Raleigh/Durham to Cancun Lowest fare this season: £292 Although Raleigh/Durham natives have always enjoyed direct links to Cancun with JetBlue, those not keen on the low-cost carrier not exactly known for the comfort of its seats will now be able to fly American Airlines instead. The full-service airline has added Raleigh to its flight map and will be operating flights to the Caribbean gem throughout winter. If you’re planning on visiting Cancun, make sure you check out our arrival tips for Cancun Airport. By far and away, it is the busiest and most chaotic hub in Mexico, looking set to welcome more than 9 million tourists during the upcoming season only, and knowing how to navigate it is paramount- otherwise, you may fall victim to taxi or money exchange scams. 3 – Colorado to Santo Domingo Lowest fare this season: $291 Banking on Costa Rica flights to sell out its winter schedule, Southwest Airlines is not only ramping up service to the sought-after destination but opening a new air bridge between Denver, Colorado, and San Jose, the country’s lively capital and its main entry point. The official start date is March 11, 2023. On the route, passengers can expect a smooth flight on a Boeing 737 MAX 8, and limited capacity shouldn’t be an issue, as each leg of the journey is expected to carry 175 passengers. Besides being more accessible than ever, there’s another reason why Coloradans should pick Costa Rica as their next vacation: it’s been recently crowned Central America’s top destination. 4 – Baltimore/Washington to Liberia Lowest fare this season: $311 While it is not exactly a new route like the others, the popular Baltimore/Washington – Liberia service is seeing a welcome increase in frequency. Up until now, D.C. sun-seekers had only a single flight available weekly: as soon as winter comes, though, they will be allowed to choose whether Saturday or Sunday is their preferred day for flying. Liberia is located on the northern coast of Costa Rica, in close proximity to the Nicoya Peninsula, where the nation’s most dramatic coastal views are. Within the municipality, some of the top attractions are the Old Quarter, dating back to the mid-19th century, the Museo del Sabanero, and the iconic Ermita de La Agonia, a white-washed colonial church. 5 – Tampa to Santo Domingo Lowest fare this season: Not yet announced The Dominican Republic (DR) capital has been largely overlooked over the years, as Punta Cana, Puerto Plata, and the like took center stage. Recently it’s been a different story, especially after American tourists discovered the wonders of colonial cities. Being the oldest European settlement on this side of the pond, Santo Domingo couldn’t be left out by Frontier. The budget airline is finally adding the colonial-era jewel to its list of Tampa destinations, being one of many to have struck a deal with the country’s Civil Aeronautics Board to increase flights to the island. Other important details are still missing, but we do have a tentative launch date: the route is opening between November 2022 and January 2023. 6 – Tampa to Punta Cana Lowest fare this season: Not yet announced Elsewhere, the Dominican Republic’s own carrier, Air Century, is eyeing the American market, has announced plans to debut a new service from Punta Cana, the island’s top sunny destination, to Tampa. Yes, soon enough, the Florida hub will have nonstop flights to both the DR’s historical capital and its famous Caribbean resort strip. We have not been able to confirm either schedule or frequency, but either way, this is great news for Punta Cana-bound Floridians, who will be on the winning side as more airlines enter a fare war in hopes of offering the most attractive and cheapest flight options. Beyond Tampa, Air Century also has its eyes set on Miami, with future routes yet to be confirmed. 7 – New York to Mexico City Lowest fare this season: $361 Mexico is a favorite for Americans going abroad no matter the time of year. Now that all restrictions placed on Americans flying into and out of the U.S. have been dropped, they have been flocking into their Southern neighbor in their droves, and not only to the Caribbean coast: places like Guanajuato and Mexico City are now top of the list. Regarding the latter, American Airlines is launching daily flights there from JFK. Flying on a Boeing 737, passengers can expect to depart the Big Apple at 8:30 pm and touch down in the Mexican capital at 12:10 am. Whether it’s American Airlines or other carriers, just be careful when booking your Mexico City flights, or you could end up landing 30 miles out of the city. 8 – Austin to Cozumel Lowest fare this season: $170 This year, American Airlines made it a top priority to boost its Caribbean flights. Besides adding two new destinations in Jamaica, the flag bearer has included Cozumel to its comprehensive flight map out of Austin, Texas. This winter, Austin residents will be able to fly directly to the paradise island without facial the usual long layovers, in just over two and a half hours. For those looking for budget vacation options amid the cost of living crisis, Cozumel with American might be a good pick, as one-way tickets can go as low as USD 170.00 on certain dates when booked in advance. Looking for further inspiration? We have even rounded up the top 7 beaches in Cozumel so you won’t waste any time reaching the best swimming spots. 9 – Fort Lauderdale to Managua Lowest fare this season: $108 Costa Rica is the trendiest destination this year, and the fact that it appears a third and final time on this list is a testament to that: in a way, airlines are battling among themselves for Managua flight slots as demand for the Central American country increases dramatically. The latest to have returned to this profitable market is Spirit. The low-cost brand is debuting its highly-anticipated Fort Lauderdale – Managua flights on November 30, in time for the hot and humid Southern Hemisphere summer, with airfares as low as USD 108.00 one-way. With a daily frequency, the airline plans on re-establishing and strengthening the once-severed link between the U.S. and Latin America’s safest nation. If you’re flying abroad later this year in search of some sun, make sure you double-check the entry requirements at your destination, especially when flying to Latin America, as only a limited number of countries in the region have fully removed all Covid rules. All destinations featured on this list are open with normal, pre-pandemic border guidelines. The Metaverse Is ‘really Dangerous’ When It Comes To Privacy, Attorney Jay Edelson Says – Fast Company https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-metaverse-is-really-dangerous-when-it-comes-to-privacy-attorney-jay-edelson-says-fast-company/ The metaverse has risen to become one of tech’s biggest focuses for the next decade. Just look at Facebook, which was renamed Meta last year as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for the immersive technology. But the rise in the metaverse also coincides with an increased focus on consumer privacy. Users and lawmakers have become more concerned with how their data is being used, tracked, and sold. Having people work, play, and live in a virtual world that users enter through a type of headset is likely going to be a disaster when it comes to data collection, argues attorney Jay Edelson, who has brought previous privacy suits against Google and Facebook. From left: Harry McCracken, global technology editor, Fast Company; Jay Edelson, attorney and founder, Edelson law firm [Photo: Maja Saphir for Fast Company] Headset devices are able to record things like a person’s movements, facial attributes, blinking, surroundings, and their activities when they’re in the metaverse. “The metaverse is really dangerous on privacy because if the idea is that we’re going to be wearing stuff that is tracking everything from our heartbeat to where we go and who we talk to, it is just gold for data companies,” Edelson told the audience at the Fast Company Innovation Festival on Thursday. That’s where the importance of privacy laws come in, he said. Proponents of data privacy are pushing for companies to either share their data collection practices with consumers because they want to or because they’re compelled to by law. “The key thing is for companies to actually talk about publicly and disclose what they’re collecting,” Edelson said. “I’m not looking to sue everyone. I’d rather they just change their behavior. If there’s a reason you’re not willing to say it in your contracts or on stage or anywhere else, maybe that’s because it’s stuff that you shouldn’t be doing. That’s a key thing with the metaverse.” [Photo: Maja Saphir for Fast Company] It’s still the early days of the metaverse. The ability to transition seamlessly from the digital world to the physical is still unrealized. But it’s clear that many believe it to be one of the biggest growth opportunities in the next decade. In just the first five months of 2022, companies and venture capital and private equity firms have invested more than $120 billion in the metaverse, according to a report from McKinsey & Company. That’s more than double what was invested in all of 2021. The investments come with good reason: McKinsey anticipates that the metaverse could generate up to $5 trillion in impact by 2030. “It’s fine to innovate. It’s fine to do kind of cool things,” Edelson said, “but you’ve got to tell people what actually you’re collecting, who you’re giving it to, and what’s going to happen with the data. It’s about disclosures and consent, to me.”

Sunday 7: Mac Jones Likes cool Gray Area Of Patriots Evolving Offense WEEI
Sunday 7: Mac Jones Likes cool Gray Area Of Patriots Evolving Offense WEEI
Sunday 7: Mac Jones Likes ‘cool Gray Area’ Of Patriots’ Evolving Offense – WEEI https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/sunday-7-mac-jones-likes-cool-gray-area-of-patriots-evolving-offense-weei/ 1 – As the Patriots’ new offense continues to evolve and grow under Mac Jones’ leadership, the second-year quarterback clearly thinks an aspect of his successful production in college at Alabama could benefit New England as well: RPOs. Run-pass option plays are essentially built as run plays aside from an option the quarterback has to throw to certain receiver if he feels confident it will be a positive, productive play and better than simply handing to the running back. Jones ran RPOs nearly 20 percent of the time he was passing the ball at Alabama, completing 73-of-78 of those option throws for 890 yards with 10 touchdowns and no interceptions. “I like those plays,” Jones acknowledged this week after the Patriots sprinkled some RPO looks into the Week 2 win in Pittsburgh. “I think every offense has some of them, in some way, shape or form. They’re good plays. But we have to be able to do a lot of things. Like I always say, there’s different types of plays – short, medium, long, play-action, RPO, gadget. So there’s different buckets you put them in and you want to be able to do all of them. So yeah, I like RPOs. They’re cool.” Jones noted that RPOs “put stress on a defense,” something he observed when Alabama coach Nick Saban would “explode” in practice at his Tide players trying to defend the look. “So there’s a lot of cool gray area there from an offensive perspective,” Jones said, advocating for RPOs to be at least a complementary part of the Patriots’ attack. “Other teams were doing them too around the league, and having good production. So I think, like I said, every offense has their core plays and you don’t necessarily want your RPOs to be your core plays, which they’re not. But it’s always good to have that extra flavor you can have in there. Like you said, it’s a run, it’s a pass, what is it? So I think they’re always good.” 2 – While RPO snaps involve Jones reading the would-be pass option while putting the ball in the gut of the running back for the potential handoff, offensive linemen treat the play as a simple run. The swift nature of the play design allows for them to fire out with a run block without fear of getting downfield, without fear of being flagged for a penalty. So RPOs are basically much ado about nothing for linemen, save for some wasted success. “You always feel like when they do throw the ball it was probably your best block, right,” Patriots center David Andrews joked, seemingly also in favor of RPOs. “If the look’s not great it’s kind of an easy fix in my opinion. You maybe don’t have to change the play, there is an answer to it already built in. As offensive linemen it’s a way to do different things but you are only thinking about one thing – run blocking. I think they’re good. They can be a good addition. They can be a good tool. But, always, I ran a few of them in college and stuff, and always feel like they throw the ball when it’s your best block.” 3 – There has been a lot of talk of so-called 50-50 balls as part of the Patriots passing game, even going back to training camp practice action when newcomer DeVante Parker declared that those thrown his way are actually 80-20 plays in his favor. In the Week 1 loss in Miami, a 50-50 in the end zone on the opening New England drive resulted in a Dolphins interception. A week later in Pittsburgh, Nelson Agholor made an incredible catch in the second quarter for a 44-yard touchdown on a 50-50 ball, a key play in the Patriots’ win. “I think we want to give all of our playmakers a chance,” Jones explained of what he’s described as a different philosophy in the passing game. “A lot of our plays there’s a certain read on it. I do like the freedom to be able to do that. I did that a lot in the past. It’s great. I think 50-50’s a slight term, it’s like oh it can go either way. But it’s hard to defend when you’re one-on-one and there’s not a lot of people around you. So, I know it’s hard on the defender, and obviously they can make good plays too. So, it can go either way. But we definitely trust the guys and we’ve worked on it a lot. You’ll have to have time to be able to do that with the offensive line which we have. Just want to continue to grow with that. Sometimes they look close but then eventually they’re going to be really open. So, it just depends on the play.” 4 – NFL quarterbacks are under scrutiny at all times. From coaches. From media. From fans. It’s the nature of the position. One might argue that it’s why they make the really, really big bucks. Of course much of the criticism thrown the way of quarterbacks like Jones comes from people who, quite frankly, probably don’t know what they are talking about. At least that’s how Patriots captain Devin McCourty seems to see it. “I will say first and foremost, overall there’s not many people who watch football who understand how to play quarterback,” McCourty said. “I think no matter what, including you. He would be crazy if he built his career off of what people write and say about him. Because for one there’s not many people who’ve played the position at a high level and can do that consistently. So I think no matter what in this league you come out, you play as a rookie, you have success as a rookie, you go out there and do good things…it sucks to say, but everyone is waiting to write bad things about you. That’s just how everything works. But I think he knows that in this building every guy in that locker room believes in him.” 5 – The Patriots have a familiar face on the practice squad who’s apparently doing good things on the practice field. Former longtime New England starting right tackle Marcus Cannon returned to the team via the practice squad Sept. 13 and has already impressed, earning recognition as one of the Patriots’ practice players of the week for the work leading up to last Sunday’s win in Pittsburgh. A 2011 fifth-round pick out of TCU who overcame cancer on his way to the NFL, Cannon started 69 of 115 games played in New England from 2011-19. He sat out the 2020 season due to Covid and then started all four games he played in Houston a year ago before landing on IR with a back injury. Now back in Foxborough, it sounds like a case of “when” not if Cannon will find his way back onto the game field for a Patriots team that traded away some of its offensive line depth last week by dealing Justin Herron to the Raiders. “Marcus has had a great attitude. Comes in, works really hard. Just wants to do it the right way,” Belichick said. “Not come in and jump in but come in and start at the beginning. Work on his fundamentals, work on the lifting, all the preparation things that go into being a good football player. You start at the bottom work his way up. That’s really the way to do it is build a good foundation. Didn’t have training camp but he can use the time that he has now to put that in place. So when he does play, he’ll be, I think, able to hit a higher ceiling than trying to skip all those steps and just start playing. He has a great attitude, had a good week of practice, was impressive out there. So he’s good.” 6 – Belichick obviously knows a little something about elite kickers. Adam Vinatieri jumpstarted the Patriots dynasty with his game-tying kick in the Snow Bowl against the Raiders — considered to be the greatest kick in NFL history – and is expected to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame for his Super Bowl-winning work in New England and Indianapolis. Stephen Gostkowski and, now, Nick Folk have also played at an incredibly high level in New England under Belichick’s watch. But Sunday at Gillette Stadium, Belichick and Co. will get a visit from not only the best kicker in the game today but arguably the best in the history of the game. Baltimore’s Justin Tucker really is just that good. “He’s reset that position by probably a pretty decent amount,” Belichick said of Tucker. “This isn’t like being 200th of a second under the world record. This guy’s really reset the bar. No miss kicks, accuracy is very good, distance, range. He really shortens the field. He makes the field about 10 yards shorter than most everybody has it. Not just with his leg strength, but the fact of his accuracy and how good he is from long range as well.” 7 – Prediction Time: The Patriots and Ravens probably qualify as an NFL rivalry thanks primarily to splitting four postseason battles from 2010-2015. New England actually has an 8-2 record against Baltimore in the regular season under Belichick’s watch. None of that will matter on Sunday. New England’s home opener will be about two things – a new test against Lamar Jackson for a Patriots defense that’s played relatively well to open the season and an opportunity for Mac Jones to face what statistically is the NFL’s worst pass defense. Jackson has seemingly been a man on a mission since failing to reach a contract extension with the Ravens this offseason, and while he still makes key plays with his legs his ability to pass and read defenses has gone to the next level. Jackson will put plenty of stress on the Patriots’ defense, even if the doesn’t really have the luxury of a running game to help him out. The question is whether Jones is ready to keep up if a shootout develops against a team averaging more than 30 points per game with New England having scored just 24 points total in two weeks of action. While Baltimore has some big names and big money on its pass defense, Joe Flacco and Tua Tagovailoa both threw for more than 300 yards in the first two weeks against it. The most likely scenario here is that New England scores more points and makes more plays through the air as the offense continues to evolve. Unfortunately for them, the defense probably also gives up more plays and points as well. Health concerns for...

On the other hand, Terra Classic Lunc took lead in the laggards list by plunging more than 7%, followed by XDC Network shedding nearly 5%, Stellar and DogeCoin tumbling more than 3% each. Axie Infinity, Helium, Nexo, Celsius, and Synthetix dived between 2-3%. Terra tokens are under pressure as currently, Terraform Labs CEO Do Kwon is facing multiple jurisdictions. An arrest warrant has been issued by the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors Office against Kwon who is the forefather of TerraUSD algorithmic stablecoin and sister token Luna that wiped out reportedly $60 billion in the cryptocurrency market. Kwon’s whereabouts are unknown, although, the co-founder of Terra tokens denied rumours of being on the ‘run’ from government agencies. Last week, US Fed in its latest policy statement said, “the Committee is highly attentive to inflation risks.” FOMC further said, in support of these goals, the Committee decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 3 to 3-1/4 percent and anticipates that ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate. In addition, the Committee will continue reducing its holdings of Treasury securities and agency debt, and agency mortgage-backed securities, as described in the Plans for Reducing the Size of the Federal Reserve’s Balance Sheet that was issued in May. FOMC is committed to returning inflation to its 2% objective. Catch all the Business News, Market News, Breaking News Events and Latest News Updates on Live Mint. Why Nvidias New Lovelace Chip Is Bad News For Jay Powell The Motley Fool
Why Nvidia’s New Lovelace Chip Is Bad News For Jay Powell – The Motley Fool https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/why-nvidias-new-lovelace-chip-is-bad-news-for-jay-powell-the-motley-fool/ Last week, Nvidia (NVDA -0.36%) unveiled its new RTX graphics chips based on its “Lovelace” architecture. The chips have some impressive performance metrics, making an exciting leap forward in performance over the prior Ampere generation. The downside for gamers? The highest-end RTX Lovelace 4090 graphics cards will retail for $1,599, and the 4080 cards will go for a lower range, between $899 and $1,199. That’s far more expensive than the prior Ampere 3080 generation released two years ago, initially priced at $699. CEO Jensen Huang fielded questions from concerned consumers at the conference, defending the new price, given Lovelace’s high-performance specs. But Huang also pointed to a more troubling reason for the high price — and it could have adverse consequences for the broader technology sector, the economy, and the stock market. “Moore’s Law is Dead” In response to critics, Huang declared, “Moore’s Law is dead…A 12-inch wafer is a lot more expensive today.” For those who don’t know, Moore’s Law is named after former Intel (INTC -1.96%) co-founder Gordon Moore, who posited that the number of transistors chipmakers can fit onto a silicon wafer doubles every 12 to 18 months. The result is that chips either become twice as powerful for the same price or equally as powerful for half the cost every one to two years. But these days, the cost to produce more powerful chips is going up. While the short term has seen lots of inflation due to rising material and freight costs, as it has for many other goods throughout the economy, this is, theoretically, a temporary and fixable phenomenon. But the semiconductor sector is experiencing another factor that makes this cost inflation perhaps more permanent. It comes down to physics. Chipmakers have miraculously been able to pack transistors just four nanometers apart in this year’s most advanced chips, including the Lovelace GPUs. In the years ahead, they could be three, two, or maybe even one nanometer apart. However, as transistor densities have increased and the space between transistors gets smaller and smaller, it has become more and more challenging to pack all those transistors in cost-effectively. Chip manufacturing is complicated, and the more densely packed a chip is, the tougher it is to produce without imperfections. That’s why Intel has had a difficult time in the last few years, even losing its process lead, starting with its 10nm chip a few years ago. That is driving up the capital intensity of chipmaking while also lengthening the time a wafer must go through all process steps. Basically, as transistor distances run up against the laws of physics and the capabilities of today’s semiconductor production tools, the process is getting harder. And a harder process is a more expensive process. Image source: Nvidia. Implications for semiconductors and the economy Obviously, we are living in a period of disconcerting inflation after many years of low and stable inflation. Besides globalization, a key factor that has helped put a lid on inflation is the effect of technology. As technology progresses, it becomes a deflationary force, enabling businesses and customers to be more efficient. But that disinflationary force is largely predicated on Moore’s Law, in which computing power becomes cheaper every year. Thus, if Moore’s Law is truly “dead,” that could take away a key helper in limiting inflation. Recently, markets have been in turmoil as inflation coming out of the pandemic has skyrocketed. Its persistence is now forcing central banks to tighten their policies very quickly, sending stocks plummeting. And with developed economies now bringing some manufacturing back to their own countries from lower-cost countries due to geopolitical concerns — especially in the chip sector — that’s another deflationary force that’s going away. If Moore’s Law just so happens to be slowing down at the same time, the helpful effects of technology-enabled efficiency could be going away, too. That could mean more inflation, higher interest rates, and lower valuations for stocks and bonds. The good news — maybe Moore’s Law isn’t “dead” but aging While Moore’s Law may be “dead” in that it suggests a doubling of power performance every year, Nvidia’s Lovelace chips offer superior price performance to the prior Ampere generation. Recent specs place Lovelace’s processing capability per unit of power between two and four times that of the prior generation. So, with the 4080 chips priced between 28% and 72% more than Ampere and the 4090 priced 130% more than Ampere, customers are still getting more value per dollar spent on these chips — the relative improvements just aren’t doubling with each generation. But it’s still an improvement on a per-dollar basis. In addition to packing more transistors onto each wafer, chipmakers are also developing new techniques — like using new materials, such as the more conductive cobalt over traditional copper wire — to improve performance. Another way is through advanced packaging techniques that shorten the distance between chips or parts of a chip, which can also help boost power performance beyond the transistor count. In fact, current Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger believes that new “chiplet” architectures closely packaged can continue extending Moore’s law, apparently in disagreement with Huang. So the disinflationary forces of technology are still here. However, investors should realize this helpful disinflation may occur more slowly now. Your PC, mobile device, or, in Nvidia’s case, graphics card should still become more powerful each year — but maybe you shouldn’t expect a huge leap every two years or to pay the same price for twice the power. Despite its beautiful Greek Revival-style architecture, the Poplar Hill House, also known as the Nannie House, is rife with hauntings. Several years ago, the Maxwell family moved into the home and reported disturbing activity like ghostly apparitions, knocking on doors, and moving objects. Due to the increasing amount of paranormal activity, the family left the house, breaking their lease. To date, this house remains a residential property around Hillsborough in North Carolina. 9 Jamieson Inn (Crestview, Florida) This unassuming inn sits between other chain hotels and big box stores. However, looks can be deceiving because Crestview’s Jamieson Inn has some paranormal activity, specifically in room 208. It’s unsure of what really happened in the room, but guests report strong smells of cigarettes and levitating luggage. Situated along Cracker Barrel Drive, the Jamieson Inn is a perfect stay for avid paranormal believers. 8 White Hall State Historic Site (Richmond, Kentucky) Kentucky’s White Hall sits proudly at over 10,000 square feet, adorned with styles that draw inspiration from Italian-style architecture, which was owned by Cassius Marcellus Clay. General Clay was rumored to be scandalous, divorcing his wife at the age of 84 to tie knots with 16-year-old Dora Richardson. There are even claims that those who disagreed with his decision would be met with a loaded cannon standing outside his front porch! Those who visit or work at the White Hall report strange paranormal activity, which is speculated to be the ghosts of the Clay family. People report hearing a baby crying, apparitions of a woman, or a boy avidly playing hide and seek. Those who wish to tour the White Hall can find this historic property along White Hall Shrine Road in Richmond, Kentucky. 7 Bonaventure Cemetery (Savannah, Georgia) Savannah’s Bonaventure Cemetery is one of the city’s best attractions to explore this season! Offering guided tours, visitors can explore the spacious grounds of this peaceful cemetery, which has inspired countless artists through the decades. However, being a cemetery, the grounds are said to be haunted, specifically by six-year-old Gracie Watson, who died suddenly of pneumonia long ago. Visitors reported seeing the six-year-old appear before their eyes and eerily grimacing on the faces of the cemetery’s statues. If that’s not creepy enough, some report hearing children’s laughter in the distance or invisible dogs growling in a pack. 6 Crescent Hotel And Spa (Eureka Springs, Arkansas) The 1896 Crescent Hotel and Spa is proud of its haunted heritage, so much so that it occasionally hosts guided tours about its ghostly history! This historic hotel was the site of many unfortunate events and accidents, which resulted in hauntings from various spirits. Guests report encountering the spirit “Michael,” known to slam doors shut and make inexplicable noises in room 218. Furthermore, visitors also report seeing ghosts sporting Victorian attire in the dining room and encountering Dr. Norman Baker—the infamous cancer doctor in the 1930s—in the lobby. Looking for a comfortable and spooky stay at Eureka Springs? Then the Crescent Hotel and Spa is a perfect combination! 5 Dock Street Theatre (Charleston, South Carolina) Around the world, there is no shortage of haunted theaters, and the Dock Street Theatre is no exception. Located in Charleston, South Carolina, the original Dock Street Theatre was built in 1735 and also functioned as a theater venue and a hotel. Though today’s theater sits on Church Street, that doesn’t stop centuries-old ghosts from haunting the property! Ghost hunters may encounter spirits like Nettie, a beautiful young woman who took her own life by jumping off the theater’s balcony in the late 19th century. 4 Old Alton Bridge (Lantana, Texas) They say everything is bigger in Texas, but the Old Alton Bridge says otherwise. This humble wooden bridge looks unassuming but is registered as a Historic Place in the United States. Overlooking the nearby river, nature enthusiasts can enjoy numerous trails nearby the bridge. On the other hand, the Old Alton Bridge harbors an urban legend of the Goatman. Stories report that Goatman—a half-man, half-goat figure—haunts the area after he was murdered on the Old Alton Bridge by unwelcoming locals. Those that wish to encounter paranormal activity on this truss bridge can visit it at night to possibly witness the apparitions of ghostly figures or the eerie touch of an unknown entity. 3 Myrtles Plantation (St. Francisville, Louisiana) History buffs can appreciate the timeless architecture and heritage of Myrtles Plantation, a historic home in St. Francisville, Louisiana. Transformed into a cozy hotel, this former plantation is one of the most haunted homes in America. Some claim that the plantation sits atop an ancient burial ground, with others suggests that through the course of history, over ten people were murdered on the plantation. Despite its dark backstory, visitors report seeing ghostly figures, especially “Chloe,” a supposed slave girl who worked at the Myrtles Plantation around the Antebellum period. 2 Maple Hill Cemetery (Huntsville, Alabama) Being the largest cemetery in Huntsville, the Maple Hill Cemetery houses over 80,000 burials, including notable figures related to the American government and politics. This Huntsville cemetery is reportedly (and unsurprisingly) haunted, with visitors seeing apparitions and hearing mysterious voices from afar. Moreover, nearby the cemetery lies Maple Hill Park, also eerily known asDead Children’s Playground. Legends claim that children who died during the Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918 came out at night to play in the park. Visitors reported seeing mysterious orbs appearing in photographs of the park. 1 McRaven (Vicksburg, Mississippi) Enjoying the title of the most haunted house in all of Mississippi, McRaven proudly hosts public (and private) haunted ghost tours of this historic property. This pre-Civil Ear home is beautifully adorned and constructed to reflect an older time yet experienced a storied past. The property contains the burial of Confederate soldiers and was an apparent site for murders and untimely deaths. Those who dare visit McRaven may spot the ghost of Mary Elizabeth Howard (the lady of the McRaven house) or the spirit of robber Andrew Glass.

But missing from that conversation was how spectrum could be a key wireless technology for deploying broadband,” Sen. Brian Schatz (D-HI), Committee chairman said. “For Native communities – many of which are remote and where wireline broadband can be challenging to install – increasing access to and use of spectrum could be a game changer.” Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), vice chair of the Committee added: “Too many of our rural communities in Alaska are on the wrong side of the digital divide, lacking broadband infrastructure and access to spectrum that are necessary for economic and educational opportunities and the delivery of services today. The destruction caused by the historic storm that just hit Western Alaska will only exacerbate those inequities. Now, more than ever, the need for robust coordination between our state, local, Tribal and federal governments to get these technologies deployed is critical.” The following panelists participated in the roundtable discussion: Umair Javed, Chief Counsel, Office of the Chairwoman, U.S. Federal Communications Commission, Washington, D.C. Telephone: (833) 568-8864 Toll-free | Meeting ID: 161 403 6634 Indian Child Welfare Legislation Introduced This week, Representative Judy Chu (D-CA) and Representative Don Bacon (R-NE) introduced the bipartisan Strengthening Tribal Families Act, legislation designed to assist state and local child welfare agencies with implementing the 1978 Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA). ICWA sets federal standards for abuse or neglect custody proceedings involving native children, lessens the trauma of removal by promoting placement with family and community. “The Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA) has been labeled the “gold standard” in child welfare policy and practice from experts across the field because it requires active efforts to keep children safely in their homes and connected to their families, communities, and culture.” Rep. Chu said. “Unfortunately, there is no federal agency responsible for overseeing the implementation of ICWA standards and progress has stagnated. Our bipartisan Strengthening Tribal Families Act will give the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) the authority to help states improve on their efforts to comply with the Indian Child Welfare Act in a way that is both in the best interests of the child and the best interests of tribal communities.” “The Indian Child Welfare Act is an answer to kinship placements for our Native American children, as they are disproportionately represented in the foster care system,” Rep. Don Bacon said. “Research shows us kinship placement helps children develop a stronger attachment to their extended family and culture. The long-term benefits in education, employment, housing, and mental health have to be at the forefront of our decision-making and this Act will ensure that.” President Biden Approves Major Disaster Declaration for Alaska FEMA announced on Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, President Joe Biden federal disaster assistance has been made available to the state of Alaska to supplement state, tribal and local recovery efforts in the areas affected by a severe storm, flooding and landslides from Sept. 15-20. The President’s action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in the Regional Educational Attendance Areas of Bering Strait, Kashunamiut, Lower Kuskokwim and Lower Yukon. Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-interest loans to cover uninsured property losses and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster. Residents and business owners who sustained losses in the designated areas can begin applying for assistance www.DisasterAssistance.gov, by calling 800-621-FEMA (3362) or by using the FEMA App. Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service.  More Stories Like This Rep. How One PHC Per Ward Policy Threatens Lives Of Rural Dwellers In Oyo State Leadership News
How One PHC Per Ward Policy Threatens Lives Of Rural Dwellers In Oyo State Leadership News
How ‘One PHC Per Ward’ Policy Threatens Lives Of Rural Dwellers In Oyo State – Leadership News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/how-one-phc-per-ward-policy-threatens-lives-of-rural-dwellers-in-oyo-state-leadership-news/ Since the day Oluchi Chioma, 35, started attending antenatal care at Awotan Orisun Healthcare Centre, Onigbaketun Awotan, in Ido Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo state, she had never missed her appointment, not just because she wants to know the condition of her unborn baby, but also because the health facility is the best one in Apete-Awotan-Ayegun and environs. “Who won’t love this clinic? To start with, the environment is serene, the health facility is spacious and there is never a time when there is no bed space, because the health facility has a lot of beds”, Chioma said. She added, “As for the health workers, they take good care of the community members, especially pregnant women. Drugs are never out of stock and the nurses are very friendly. So you can see the reason why I am eager to attend my antenatal and looking forward to giving birth to my bundle of joy at this PHC.” However, Chioma’s joy was recently cut short. Two months ago, the PHC was closed by the Oyo state government. The health facility, one of the best in Apete-Awotan-Ayegun, was ruled as not conducive to run as a health facility. The reason for the shutdown of the health facility is not far-fetched. “For years, there was no maintenance of the facility and with the heavy downpour that was accompanied with strong wind recently, the roof was blown away and the rain freely entered into the facility, destroying all the equipment, including the beds. “Instead of fixing it, the Oyo state government decided to close the health facility about two months ago and ever since then, my people have been finding it difficult to access healthcare services,” the chairman of Onigbaketun community, Ido Local Government Area (LGA), Oyo state, Kola Ola, told LEADERSHIP. “We cannot continue to live like this. Our children and pregnant women in this community need adequate healthcare services, which was provided to us at Awotan Orisun Healthcare Centre. Now that the government has shut down the facility, we are helpless,” a trader at Onigbaketun community, Mrs Balikis Adeyemi, said in an interview with LEADERSHIP. Mrs Adeyemi who has five children, said she used to patronise herbal medicine sellers, but she got to hear of Awotan Orisun Healthcare Centre from her friend. “Ever since I have been attending the PHC, my children have been healthy and okay. The cost of treatment at the PHC is even cheaper and more effective than herb treatment. Now that the government has closed the facility, we will have no other choice than to go back to using herbal drugs, because the nearest PHC (Apkete PHC) is far from where I live,” she explained. The community chairman said he wanted to renovate the health facility but he does not have the financial muscle to do it.  “We do not like the state of this PHC. We are helpless, however, because we do not have the financial muscle to renovate it. We are pleading with the government to put this place in order, so that our women and children can start accessing quality healthcare services,” he pleaded. Ola added that he does not know what government has in mind for the PHC. “We have not been able to sit with the commissioner for health or the Primary Health Care Board, (PHCB), Oyo state, to discuss this issue, but we are trying to see a way to book appointment with the agency.” The journey towards ‘health for all’ The poor health outcomes experienced by the people living in places like Onigbaketun Awotan was the main reason the federal government sets up the Primary Health Care Provision Fund (PHCPF) and the Midwives Service Scheme (MSS) in Nigeria. It would be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari launched the BHCPF appropriated by the National Assembly for the first time in the 2018 budget since the National Health Act (NHAct) was enacted in 2014. The NHAct sets out the important drivers to guide disbursement of the BHCPF. These “Payment Gateways” are in three-fold and the Act states that 50 per cent (one half) of the Fund shall be disbursed through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and deployed towards the provision of the Basic Minimum Package Health Scheme (BMPHS) in eligible primary or secondary health care facilities. Forty-five per cent of the Fund is meant to be disbursed through the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) and deployed to strengthening Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in eligible PHC facilities for the provision of essential drugs, vaccines and consumables; provision and maintenance of facilities, equipment and transport; and development of human resources: while five per cent shall be disbursed through a committee appointed by the National Council on Health (NCH) and deployed towards emergency medical treatment. Current contributions into the basket fund of the BHCPF includes N86 billion, of which about N56 billion has been disbursed to states as at June 2022, the secretary of the oversight committee of the Federal Ministry of Health, Dr Chris Isokpunwu, disclosed. To access the Fund, a section of the Act makes it clear that states have to pay 25 per cent, while the federal government pays 75 per cent. In Oyo state, for instance, LEADERSHIP findings showed that the state government paid a sum of N100 million as counterpart funding for the Basic Health Care Fund project and so far, about 351 PHCs, are eligible for BHCPF. In Akinleye LGA for instance, Aroro PHC, Ojoo PHC, Iroko PHC, Ikereku PHC, Pade Maternity centre, Akinyele PHC, Iwokoto health center and Ijaye PHC are eligible for BHCPF; In Ogbomoso South LGA, Ilogbo PHC, Alapata health post, Adebayo Alata PHC, Isoko health post, Lagbedu health post and Okeolla health post are eligible for BHCPF; For Saki east, the eligible PHCs are Araromi PHC, Arolu PHC, Model Our Owode and Isale Ola PHC; In Ibadan South West, Agbokojo, Bode PHC, Isale Osi, Kokosi PHC and Molete PHC, among others are eligible for the BHCPF; In Ido LGA, Akinware PHC, Akufo Health centre, Elebu PHC, Ilaju health post, Ladunni health centre, Omi-Adio health center and Apete health centre. Implementing PHCPF, MSS Scheme in Oyo State: Slow, but steady So far, through the PHCPF, funds have been disbursed to over 100 primary health facilities in Oyo state, even as some facilities have received second disbursement of about N600,000, LEADERSHIP findings (as at 28th of June, 2022) showed. A recent visit to primary health facilities like Isale-Osi PHC, Bode PHC, Molete PHC, Alata health center and Model Oje Owode PHC, (in July 2022) showed that N900,000 was paid to the PHC account as at November, 2021, and they have accessed about N600,000 of the BHCPF in June, 2022. For instance, at Isale-Osi PHC, Ibadan South West LGA, community health officer and an assistant officer in charge of Isale-Osi primary healthcare centre, Ibadan South west, Oyo state, Olayinde Abass told LEADERSHIP that prior to the fund, the PHC faced challenges like inadequate provision of essential drugs and poor maintenance of the facility. “So far, we have received from the BHCPF, N601,000 and we plan to use the funds to purchase essential drugs, to renovate the PHC, buy equipment like thermometer and stethoscope etc. We also need to print receipt and vouchers and carryout community mobilization/outreach programme. “If the fund keeps coming, we believe that it will improve healthcare delivery in Ibadan South west LGA, in that more people will be accessing healthcare services at the PHC,” Abass said. A visit to Molete PHC, Ibadan South West LGA, showed that the facility has received the sum of about N600,000 and part of the funds was used to fix the area for antenatal class and fix the beds, most of which were in bad shape. The Matron of Molete PHC, Mrs Folashade Yinka, told LEADERSHIP that the PHC is faced with challenges ranging from inadequate beds, lack of hospital equipment like syringes, lack of potable water (as they fetch water from well) to inadequate chairs for antenatal and immunization class. With the disbursement of the funds this year, the matron said parts of the N600,000 have been used to fix the bed springs, buy delivery couch, fix the antenatal area, buy chairs and bed lining, among others. On the MSS, Yinka said the Oyo state government has assigned one midwife to the health facility, while assuring that it will assign more midwives to the PHC as soon as possible, to assist the four workers there. She however appealed to government to provide borehole for them and put in more security in place to enable them work morning and night. A visit to Akinyele PHC, AKinyele LGA, revealed that the facility is one of the best in the LGA as government has ensured that there are enough drugs in the hospital. According to the WDC Chairman, Akinyele PHC, Mr. Toogun Sunkanmi, the government is trying its best to make sure that the PHC is in perfect condition. He told LEADERSHIP that his job is to take the needs of the PHC to the government and also to help educate the people (community) on the importance of using the facility for immunization of their children and other health care services. In Ido LGA, the secretary and director of Ido Local government Head Authority, Dr. Olugbade Omotado, told LEADERSHIP that the LGA consists of 10 wards and each ward has more the one PHC, adding that the government decided to attend to one PHC per ward. The others, including Awontan Orisun PHC, are not attended to and as a result are in bad state, a community member, in Ido LGA, Samson Amosun, told LEADERSHIP, while pleading with the government to renovate those centres as soon as possible, to save the lives of people living in those communities. In Ogbomoso South LGA, a visit to Adebayo Amao Alata PHC, 2022, showed that while the health facility is selected ...

Flipkart is expected to make an official announcement of its Flipverse during Flipkart’s Big Billion Day sale. What is the Flipverse? The Flipverse shopping experience is expected to transform ecommerce from 2D static product catalogs into real-time experiences that enable users to ‘walk’ around a store, enjoying 3D-rendered store displays.  Flipverse will host games, contests, drops, NFTs, brand activations, product launches, and mystery boxes. Gamers And Creators Can’t Afford To Lose This Chance Of Buying A 4K Monitor With Super Cool Features – The Tech Outlook https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/gamers-and-creators-cant-afford-to-lose-this-chance-of-buying-a-4k-monitor-with-super-cool-features-the-tech-outlook/ Are you bored of using your conventional laptop or desktop screen for editing and gaming? If you answered yes you are at the right place where you will get a lot to know about 4K screen monitors. Though some people may like to go with 8K video footage for now we can go with the norm of 4K. Ultra HD (UHD), or 4K, means a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, which is four times as many pixels as full HD (FHD). And this increased pixel density means a cleaner, more detailed, and textured image.  We have good news and bad news. Russia Starts Developing Mechanism For International Crypto Payments – Finance Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/russia-starts-developing-mechanism-for-international-crypto-payments-finance-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ Financial authorities in Russia have begun work on a mechanism to facilitate the employment of cryptocurrencies for settlements with other nations amid sanctions. The country’s central bank and finance ministry have already agreed on a draft law regulating cross-border crypto payments. Regulators in Russia Move Toward Legalizing Use of Cryptocurrency in Foreign Trade Russian authorities intend to regulate the issuance, circulation, and various operations with digital assets, including international crypto payments, by the end of 2022. The Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Russia, and the Rosfinmonitoring agency, have taken on the task, the financial watchdog told the daily Izvestia. “The activities of organizations that will carry out exchange operations with digital currency, its transfer and storage, and providers of virtual asset services should be subject to regulation, including registration or licensing of such persons and their supervision,” Rosfinmonitoring explained and added that their responsibilities should also include combating money laundering. The current version of the bill “On Digital Currency,” put forward by the finance ministry earlier this year and revised with input from other authorities, provides for the establishment of domestic infrastructure for crypto asset trading. Now, Russian regulators have turned their attention to the settlement mechanism for cryptocurrency payments in foreign trade. Finance Ministry and Central Bank Agree on Law Allowing Cross-Border Crypto Settlements This week, Deputy Minister of Finance Alexey Moiseev unveiled that his department and the Bank of Russia have reached an in-principle agreement on new legislation authorizing international payments in cryptocurrency. Earlier in September, the two institutions concluded that Russia “can’t do without cross-border crypto payments” in the face of mounting sanctions. Quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency and the business daily Kommersant, the government official said: Now we have a bill already agreed with the central bank. It generally describes how to acquire cryptocurrency, what can be done with it, and how it can or cannot be used, in the first place in cross-border settlements. At the same time, according to a report by RBC Crypto, Moiseev admitted that the issue with “entry and exit to fiat” remains to be resolved. Then, experts will have to determine the minimum infrastructure that Russia needs to create in order to be able to implement such cryptocurrency payments. The finance ministry and the monetary authority have also agreed on a draft law concerning crypto mining that will legally define the activity. The deputy minister noted that the question of whether miners should credit the minted digital coins to wallets in the Russian Federation or abroad has so far been decided in favor of the second option. Space News Weekly Recap: Artemis I Cryogenic Test To Webb Images Of Mars – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/space-news-weekly-recap-artemis-i-cryogenic-test-to-webb-images-of-mars-the-indian-express/ NASA’s Artemis 1 cryogenic tanking demonstration test After the demonstration, launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson said that all the objectives have been met. After hours of issues, NASA eventually managed to load nearly 1 4 million litres of fuel into the rocket. After the aborted launch attempt on September 3, the space agency had replaced two seals in the leaky line. After this, NASA updated the loading procedures to ensure that the various systems are put under much less thermal and pressure stress. After the leak appeared during the test on Wednesday, the launch team began moving even more slowly. After deciding to forego the launch window on September 27, the American space agency said that it will decide whether to roll the rocket and spacecraft from the launch pad to the Vehicle Assembly Building on Sunday (September 25). The “Rashid” rover, named after Dubai’s ruling family would be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and will be deposited by a Japanese ispace lander. The 10-kilogram rover will carry a microscopic camera, a thermal imagery camera, two high-resolution cameras, a probe and other instruments. It is expected to study the lunar surface and how different surfaces interact with lunar particles. (Image credit: NASA/ESA/CSA/STScI and Mars JWST/GTO team) James Webb Space Telescope’s first Mars images and spectra The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured its first images and spectra of the red planet on September 5, 2022. Last week, the European Space Agency (ESA) released these images and spectra. This may not sound like a particularly impressive feat for a telescope that managed to image the Carina nebula with such great details but imaging of Mars presented a different set of technical challenges. In comparison to the distant objects captured by Webb, Mars is very close to Earth. The extremely sensitive instruments on Webb could get “blinded” by the bright infrared light coming from Mars, due to a phenomenon known as “detector saturation.” In order to avoid this, scientists had to use special detection techniques that involved the use of very short exposures and measuring only some of the light that hits the detectors. The InSight lander was the first to detect a quake on another planet. (Image credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech) NASA’s InSight lander detects space rock impacts NASA’s InSight lander detected the seismic and acoustic waves from the impact of four meteorites on the Martian surface. It also calculated the location of the craters left by the space rock, which according to Reuters is the first such measurement anywhere other than Earth. “These seismic measurements give us a completely new tool for investigating Mars, or any other planet we can land a seismometer on,” said planetary geophysicist Bruce Banerdt of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the InSight mission’s principal investigator to Reuters. The researchers used the space agency’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to confirm the location of the craters. NASA’s DART spaceraft image: From left to right, you can see Ganymede, Jupiter, Europa, Io and Callisto. (Image credit: NASA/Johns Hopkins APL) DART captures image of Jupiter and four Moons NASA’s DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft captured an image of Jupiter and its four large moons while on its path to crash into the asteroid Dimorphos to test a planetary defence technique. DART’s mission operations team pointed the spacecraft’s DRACO (Didymos Reconnaissance and Asteroid Camera for Optical) instrument and Jupiter to test its SMART Nav system that is designed to autonomously guide the spacecraft to Dimorphos before impact. DRACO successfully detected and targeted Jupiter’s moon Europa in a test of how it will visually separate Dimorphos from the larger Didymos asteroid before the impact. Neptune does not appear blue in the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) image from Webb because it captures light in the near-infrared range. (Image credit: NASA, ESA, CSA, STScI) James Webb Space Telescope image of Neptune and rings The Webb telescope captured the clearest image of Neptune and its rings since the Voyager 2 spacecraft flew by it in 1989. The Webb image clearly shows Neptune’s various bright, narrow rings and its fainter dust bands as well. Neptune appears blue in Hubble images captured at visible wavelengths due to the presence of gaseous methane. But it appears different in the images captured by Webb’s NIRCam, which captures light in the near-infrared range. Methane gas so strongly absorbs red and infrared light that the planet is very dark at those wavelengths unless high-altitude clouds are present. NASA’s Cassini captured this image of Saturn’s Moon Enceladus on October 9, 2008. (Image Credit: NASA/JPL/Space Science Institute) Saturn’s moon Enceladus New research suggests that a key building block of life is present on Saturn’s moon Encaladus’ subsurface ocean. The researchers’ modelling indicated that the ocean on Enceladus is relatively rich in dissolved phosphorous, which is an essential ingredient for life. A research article documenting the study has been published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). “The quest for extraterrestrial habitability in the solar system has shifted focus, as we now look for the building blocks for life, including organic molecules, ammonia, sulfur-bearing compounds as well as the chemical energy needed to support life. Phosphorus presents an interesting case because previous work suggested that it might be scarce in the ocean of Enceladus, which would dim the prospects for life,” explained Christopher Glein in a press statement. Glein, who is a co-author of the research paper, is an expert in extraterrestrial oceanography. In this image, the auroral region, which isnear the northern pole, in yellow/white, is seen shedding a massive planetary-scale “heat wave” moving towards the equator. This feature is over 130,000 kilometre long or ten times the diameter of Earth. (Image credit: Hubble / NASA / ESA / A. Simon (NASA GSFC) / J. Schmidt / James O’Donoghue) ‘Heat waves’ caused by Jovian auroras JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency) scientists discovered an unexpected 7000 degrees Celsius wave of heat spreading across 130,000 kilometres on Jupiter, which is unusual considering that it has average temperatures that hover around minus 145 degrees Celsius. Jupiter experiences permanent auroras around its poles and these auroras are what is heating the region around the poles to over 700 degrees Celsius. The winds on the planet then redistribute this heat around Jupiter.

Facing Uncertainty: How Technology Can Help You Travel With Confidence – Hamilton County Reporter – Hamilton County Reporter https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/facing-uncertainty-how-technology-can-help-you-travel-with-confidence-hamilton-county-reporter-hamilton-county-reporter/ By RYAN BRUBAKER Guest Columnist There is one major constant within the travel industry. No matter the generation, destination or span of a trip, the consumer wants to be able to travel with confidence. This has never been more relevant than in the present day. As many of us approach planning and taking part in travel, we can’t help but feel the weight of uncertainty. There is a fluctuating list of reasons for why consumers face these uncomfortable feelings – i.e., the potential of contracting an illness/disease, other health issues, travel costs, international tension, regional conflicts, extreme weather, risk of natural disasters, etc. Along with the fears that are often shared by a number of travelers, there are also a wide range of factors that could be causing individuals to experience their own unique form of travel anxiety. Perhaps you’ve previously had a negative experience while traveling or this is the first time that you’ve traveled alone. In any case, it is widely common for travelers in 2022 to crave a sense of safety and protection. With all this being said, I argue that in many ways, we are more prepared than ever before to travel safely. From a technological standpoint, this is 100 percent the case. While our parents and grandparents were tasked with traveling with the guidance from a travel agent and guidebooks, we have the ability to use resources such as Google Maps, Airbnb, blogs from other travelers, and so much more to get the most out of our trip. As a leader with Seven Corners, I am in a position to advocate for consumers to use insurance to protect the financial investment they have put into travel. I also have a platform to show consumers how technology can be a guide. Whether you’re traveling across the state, country or world, here are my top three tips that can help you travel with greater confidence. Certainty is created through research Just as you wouldn’t attend a job interview without properly researching the company and opportunity, you also wouldn’t want to find yourself in a new destination without any prior knowledge of its top attractions, dining options and available transportation. Two great resources that are sometimes overlooked include the city’s tourism website and its Chamber of Commerce site. Both typically outline information on local establishments, upcoming events, places to stay and parking availability. These platforms can also help you determine what activities are available and age appropriate for those traveling with you. Another way to learn more about your potential destination is through YouTube videos and TikTok as these showcase other individuals’ previous travel experiences in a given area and usually highlight their biggest takeaways from their trip. Your mobile device should be a close companion We often see consumers looking for travel opportunities when they need to unplug from the technology they use in their everyday lives. This is completely understandable; however, it is not the most realistic choice, particularly when traveling long distances or to new destinations. With a few clicks on our phone, we can share our new arrival time with loved ones, present our tickets for a flight, and take part in contactless check-in at a hotel. The industry itself has started to rely on technology more than ever before, partially due to the pandemic. In fact, data.ai reports from summer 2021 showed a 20 percent surge in travel/navigation app usage compared to previous months and times of year. Travel apps are available, and it is wise to take advantage of them. If you’re not sure where to begin, Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store have excellent lists of the top free and paid travel apps being used today. Use technologies that promote your safety Right now, there are a number of technologies that you can be using to help ensure your own or your group’s safety while traveling. Companies like Seven Corners offer 24/7 communication through multiple channels such as a mobile app, text message, WhatsApp and much more. This is a growing trend across the industry with numerous insurance, airline, residential booking and rideshare companies prioritizing round the clock communication with their customers. Apps like “Find My” allow you to share your location for a range of times with select individuals, helping you to monitor the whereabouts and stay connected with every member of your party. Resources like Sherpa are available to help you navigate the changing travel requirements and restrictions across the world. Finally, monitoring local news coming out of your destination’s area is a tried-and-true way to stay in the loop and safe while on vacation. A trip with your family to Disney World is filled with a completely different energy than a ski trip with your friends, a conference with colleagues or your student’s study abroad semester in Europe. In all these scenarios, safety should be your top priority, and technology is here to support you every step of the way. Ryan Brubaker serves as the Chief Information Officer and Executive Vice President of Operations for Seven Corners, a travel insurance company based in Carmel.

Schools In England Warn Of Crisis Of ‘heartbreaking’ Rise In Hungry Children – The Guardian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/schools-in-england-warn-of-crisis-of-heartbreaking-rise-in-hungry-children-the-guardian/ Children are so hungry that they are eating rubbers or hiding in the playground because they can’t afford lunch, according to reports from headteachers across England. The headteachers say the government is leaving schools to deal with a mounting crisis – a message amplified by a new survey on food poverty in schools, due to be published next month by Chefs in Schools, a healthy eating charity which trains chefs for school kitchens. It reveals that many schools in England are already seeing a “heartbreaking” increase in hungry children, even before winter and big energy bills force more families to choose between switching on the heating and buying food. One school in Lewisham, south-east London, told the charity about a child who was “pretending to eat out of an empty lunchbox” because they did not qualify for free school meals and did not want their friends to know there was no food at home. Community food aid groups also told the Observer this week that they are struggling to cope with new demand from families unable to feed their children. “We are hearing about kids who are so hungry they are eating rubbers in school,” said Naomi Duncan, chief executive of Chefs in Schools. “Kids are coming in having not eaten anything since lunch the day before. The government has to do something.” In England, all infant schoolchildren are entitled to free school meals from reception to year two. But beyond that, only children whose parents earn less than £7,400 a year are eligible, and 800,000 children living in poverty are missing out, according to the Child Poverty Action Group. Many of the schools Duncan’s charity works with are raiding already over-stretched budgets to feed hungry children who don’t qualify for free school meals. She wants all children from families on universal credit to qualify, a position also taken by teachers’ unions. “It’s absolutely heartbreaking for our chefs. They are actively going out and finding the kids who are hiding in the playground because they don’t think they can get a meal, and feeding them,” she said. Duncan said the survey reveals that teachers are buying toasters so that they can dish out breakfast to children who are too hungry to concentrate. One school in Streatham, south London, had a hardship fund that used to support 50 children but is now supporting 100. Paul Gosling, president of the National Association of Headteachers union, said: “The government knows that when kids turn up in the morning hungry and cold, schools will step in and help. But it’s not right that it’s being left to us with no extra support.” He said that with huge energy bills and an unfunded teacher pay rise, supporting desperate families would push hundreds of schools into deficit. Headteachers welcomed the government’s announcement last week that electricity and gas in schools would be capped at a lower “government-supported price”, knocking off £4,000 for a school paying £10,000 a month for energy. But they expressed anxiety that the cap is only being offered for six months, and warned that many schools will still be left with much higher bills than they budgeted for. Will Teece, headteacher at Brookvale Groby Learning Campus, a secondary academy school in Leicester, said parents had been ringing, asking whether the school would be offering free breakfast clubs or after-school clubs with food included. He warned: “At a time when there is much greater need for support for our families, we are in a much weaker position to be able to provide it.” Oxford Mutual Aid, a community group which delivers emergency food parcels, has had to cut its delivery days because its hundreds of volunteer packers, drivers and organisers cannot cope with the increase in requests for help, which include regular referrals from primary schools. Coordinator Muireann Meehan Speed said: “We are struggling to keep up with the demand. Every day I hear the level of distress people are in. Every day I talk to scared families who don’t know where to turn. But we can’t do more than we are already doing.” The group is hearing daily from local people who have never been unable to afford food before. “They aren’t choosing whether to heat or eat: they can’t afford to do either,” she said. Craig Johnson, founder of Launch Foods, a charity in Glasgow providing free lunches for 300 schoolchildren a day, said: “People are talking about an approaching crisis. There is already a crisis.” The charity, which drives silver trucks into primary schools and feeds everyone “with no stigma” using surplus food, has had to take its phone number off its website because it was receiving daily calls from people in places including Newcastle, Liverpool and London, asking if they could help feed children in their area. “I am getting so frustrated, telling people we can’t help them,” Johnson said. “There shouldn’t be a kid in England, Wales, Scotland or Ireland going hungry. It’s just wrong.” Michelle Dornelly, founder of Children with Voices, a charity that is feeding families on three estates in Hackney, east London, said they are struggling to cope with “a different level of need”. As well as children regularly going to bed hungry, she is worried about their growing anxiety levels. “I’m concerned about children going to school with no pens, no deodorant, no toothbrushes. All that affects self-esteem, and their self-confidence is really flagging.” Dornelly, who is on universal credit herself, says her charity doesn’t have enough storage space or freezers, and she worries about how much her women volunteers are taking on. “I love what I do, but I feel angry that we are left to do this without help from the government,” she said. “MPs should come and walk the streets of Hackney and find out what is going on.”

What Channel Is Patriots Vs. Ravens On Today? Time, TV Schedule For NFL Week 3 Game – Sporting News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/what-channel-is-patriots-vs-ravens-on-today-time-tv-schedule-for-nfl-week-3-game-sporting-news/ The Patriots and Ravens have something in common: If it weren’t for the Miami Dolphins, they’d be 2-0. Both teams have a win and a loss so far this season, with the losses coming to a shared foe in the Dolphins. The Patriots fell to Miami on the road in Week 1, while the Ravens were stunned at home in Week 2. New England’s loss was less eventful than Baltimore’s. They were never able to get anything going on offense in their season-opener, being held scoreless in the first half before ultimately losing 20-7.  However, the Patriots bounced back with a win in Week 2 in Pittsburgh. It was scrappy and certainly not pretty, but they held the Steelers’ offense in check throughout the day and made enough plays on offense to come away with a 17-14 victory. The highlight of the game was undoubtedly Nelson Agholor’s wild touchdown grab to give them the lead in the second quarter.  MORE: TV coverage, channels, scores for every NFL Week 3 game today Meanwhile, the Ravens are looking to bounce back after being shell-shocked by an outrageous Dolphins comeback last time out. Baltimore led 35-14 heading into the 4th quarter, with ESPN giving them a 98.7% win probability. Then, suddenly, the wheels came off. Miami quarterback Tua Tagovailoa exploded for four touchdowns in the final 13 minutes of the game to lead his team to a miraculous 38-35 win.  The collapse overshadowed another great day for Lamar Jackson, who had four touchdowns of his own (three passing, one rushing). Jackson was also stellar in the Ravens’ Week 1 win over the Jets, in which he found the end zone three times through the air. The 2019 MVP clearly isn’t slowing down, which can only be good news for Baltimore.  Now, the two AFC rivals clash once again with both teams looking to improve to 2-1 on the year. Will the Patriots get a win in front of their home fans, or can the Ravens show the rest of the league they’re still a force to be reckoned with? Calls Grow For Legal Measures To Protect Minors From Metaverse Sex Crimes The Korea Herald
Calls Grow For Legal Measures To Protect Minors From Metaverse Sex Crimes – The Korea Herald https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/calls-grow-for-legal-measures-to-protect-minors-from-metaverse-sex-crimes-the-korea-herald/ (123rf) Calls for measures to counter sex crimes in the metaverse are rising with an increasing number of predators targeting teenagers. Huh Kyung-mi, a professor of police administration at Keimyung University, said that legal measures are essential to respond to sexual exploitation in the metaverse in a paper published on Sunday. According to Huh, 70 percent of metaverse service users are teenagers, and criminal attempts on the metaverse platform, especially those that target youthful avatars, has been increasing. Perpetrators lure minors with virtual items and gradually lead the minors into having inappropriate conversations or filming and sending sexual content. Some cases are not even considered illegal under the current law, such as sexual harassment against virtual avatars. In some cases, crimes within the metaverse evolve into crimes in the real world. A man in his 30s who forced 11 minors he met through Zepeto – Asia’s largest metaverse platform operated by Naver Z – to film and send sexually explicit content of themselves for about a year since April 2021 was sentenced to four years in prison on Sept. 11. Amid continuing challenges, both the industry and the government are having difficulties in getting a detailed picture of the situation, as there is no efficient system for receiving reports about such crimes. The Korea Communications Commission and the Ministry of Justice have been trying to analyze metaverse crime issues since early this year. The KCC is conducting a survey to specify the scope of actions that can be interpreted as a crime. The digital sex crime committee under the Justice Ministry commented on the limit of the current law in January, recommending that criminal acts against virtual avatars and personal accounts should be considered no less than criminal acts against real human users. Professor Huh pointed out that the core of the controversy comes from the unfamiliar concept of the metaverse. “In order to curb sex crimes in the metaverse, social consensus on the nature of the metaverse should be made first — whether it is an extension of the real world or not. Discussion on a new legal structure to restrain the metaverse should follow,” said Huh said. By Lee Jung-Youn (jy@heraldcorp.com)

Southeast Asia’s Largest Bank DBS Launches Self-Directed Crypto Trading Amid Institutional Demand – Exchanges Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/southeast-asias-largest-bank-dbs-launches-self-directed-crypto-trading-amid-institutional-demand-exchanges-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ The largest bank in Southeast Asia, DBS, has launched self-directed cryptocurrency trading via its app. More customers are now qualified to access the bank’s digital asset exchange and trade cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ether. DBS Launches Self-Directed Crypto Trading DBS, the largest bank in Southeast Asia, announced Friday that it “has rolled out self-directed crypto trading via DBS digibank.” The announcement details: Eligible clients can now trade cryptocurrencies on DBS Digital Exchange (Ddex) through DBS digibank at their convenience. The DBS digital asset exchange currently supports the trading of four cryptocurrencies — bitcoin, bitcoin cash, ether, and XRP. Previously, crypto trading on the exchange was limited to corporate and institutional investors, family offices, and the bank’s private wealth management clients. With Friday’s launch, DBS explained: For a start, an estimated 100,000 investors in Singapore meet this criteria, and are eligible to access the services offered by DBS’ digital assets ecosystem. Sim S. Lim, an executive in the bank’s Consumer Banking and Wealth Management, opined: “Broadening access to Ddex is yet another step in our efforts to provide sophisticated investors looking to dip their toes in cryptocurrencies with a seamless and secure way to do so.” In August, DBS said that the trading volume on its digital asset exchange soared. “Investors who believe in the long-term prospects of digital assets are gravitating towards trusted and regulated platforms to access the digital asset market,” the bank said. The bank also recently entered the metaverse by partnering with The Sandbox. DBS Bank Group CEO Piyush Gupta said in March that he does not think cryptocurrency will become money but noted that “it can be an alternative to gold and its value.” Tags in this story DBS, DBS bank, DBS crypto exchange, dbs digital asset exchange, DBS self-directed crypto trading, dbs singapore, DBS Southeast Asia, self-directed crypto trading, self-directed cryptocurrency trading, Southeast Asia Bank, Southeast Asian largest bank What do you think about DBS launching self-directed crypto trading via its app? Analysis | Larry Page’s Flying Car Failure Is A Lesson For Us All – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/analysis-larry-pages-flying-car-failure-is-a-lesson-for-us-all-the-washington-post/ For a project so ambitious, the announcement about the end of flying-car startup Kitty Hawk Corp. was surprisingly terse. A single post on the company’s LinkedIn page on Wednesday stated: “We have made the decision to wind down Kittyhawk. We’re still working on the details of what’s next.”   The news was greeted with surprise by rival companies. Founded in 2010, Kittyhawk figured out early that it needed to make an aircraft as nimble as a car, rather than bolt some wings on an automobile. It helped pioneer a new type of aircraft called eVTOL, or electric vertical takeoff and landing — essentially a cross between a drone and a light aircraft — and hopes ran high when the deep-pocketed Google co-founder Larry Page came on board.  The dream wasn’t to be. Details on what went wrong for Kittyhawk have not been made public, but there are at least three sobering lessons to glean from its closure. Technology isn’t moving in the direction that we expect. The billionaire tech investor Peter Thiel highlighted the banality of tech’s evolution when he said in 2013 that, “We wanted flying cars, and got 140 characters instead,” referring to the then-character limit for tweets.  In the 20th century, people viewed the future through the exciting lens of science fiction: robot housekeepers from the Jetsons; or glass-domed houses and “meal pills” from the 1950s comic strip, “Closer Than We Think;” or flying cars from Back To The Future II. But predicting the path of technology is hard when our only reference point is the present, hence why Marty McFly used a fax machine in the film’s future world, and why Arthur Radebaugh’s 1950s comics featured items like paper and pens for writing “electronic Christmas cards.” Back then, the concept of digital information was impossible to fathom. Digital, networked information ended up becoming the biggest technological leap forward for the 21st century, an invisible force that put small, addictive computers in everyone’s pockets and re-wrote the dynamics of democracy itself. Trying to predict which technology will be as impactful next is still just as hard to fathom. It could be decentralized crypto networks that gives everyone a piece of web3, or a radically different kind of personal computing device, like smart contact lenses that project digital images onto our eyeballs. Silicon Valley thrives on chasing the bold ideas of eccentric entrepreneurs, but the fact is, the biggest ambitions are often too hard to make real. Moonshots usually fail. There’s a well-known trope among Google employees that’s deeply embedded in the company’s culture: Failure is good. The head of Alphabet Inc.’s X division, the company’s skunkworks R&D lab for churning out radical technological ideas, said in 2016 that the unit had killed about 100 projects in one year and celebrated “fast failing.” When a team ended a project, they’d get applause from their peers, X’s Chief Executive Officer Astro Teller said. “Hugs and high fives from their manager,” he added. “They get promoted for it.” (They could also get away with it thanks to Google’s $200 billion ad machine.) That is the natural process of turning a revolutionary idea into a blockbuster hit. But there have been few hits at X, and hyped-up projects like Google’s augmented reality glasses, smart contact lens for diabetics, or balloons that could beam Internet access to the developing world have been shut down. It’s easy to get lured by the thrill and promise of projects like flying cars — not least when breathless stock pickers insist their success is just around the corner — but they are called moonshots for a reason. When technology is hard to build, it’s much less likely to succeed. Big-name backers don’t necessarily solve big engineering challenges.   Though it’s unclear what precisely went wrong at Kittyhawk, the company likely couldn’t solve some fundamental engineering puzzles. One of its models, for instance, suffered a series of fires because engineers had cut out the protective shielding used in lithium-ion battery cells for cars, and bundled the cells together with tape, according to a 2019 investigative report in Forbes, increasing the risk of the battery igniting.  Engineers who brought up safety concerns were also brushed off by management who were eager to bring the company’s aircraft to market, according to Forbes. Kitty Hawk declined to comment in the Forbes report. Kitty Hawk had raised $75 million from investors including Page, according to Pitchbook, a market intelligence firm. But Page’s wealth and Google connections weren’t enough to keep the company alive. Neither was the cachet of being named after the North Carolina town where the Wright brothers’ held their first flying experiments. But someone will make eVTOL’s a reality, most likely as a kind of flying taxi operated by an airline or ride-share firm. Boeing and Airbus are building them, as is Uber and a raft of smaller companies, who are just as likely to crack the puzzle. As much as a billionaire backer inspires confidence, it doesn’t make a highly ambitious project any more feasible. Page’s Kitty Hawk project has made that all too clear.
