Businesses Urged To Turn On Same-Day Delivery Before November Online Sales Peak – Tech Business News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/businesses-urged-to-turn-on-same-day-delivery-before-november-online-sales-peak-tech-business-news/ Australia’s online shopping industry is reportedly now worth more than $47 billion. According to a recently released study, the market size has grown by 8.9 per cent in 2022, proving that the Australian appetite for online shopping continues to soar. The November online sales days – Click Frenzy (8-10 November 2022), Black Friday (25 November 2022) and Cyber Monday (28 November 2022) – are now considered a huge retail opportunity for businesses of all sizes – not just major retailers. Especially following the Covid-19 pandemic – when online shopping skyrocketed to unprecedented levels – Australians today have clearly embraced the convenience of online shopping, with same-day delivery services in large part responsible for what is now considered a permanent change in Australian shopping habits. Sherpa – an Australian start-up founded in 2014 – is the country’s largest same-day delivery provider by volume of deliveries. Essentially a technology platform that connects independent courier professionals with businesses, Sherpa specialises in same-day delivery and the CEO of Sherpa, Duncan Brett, says the company is gearing-up for another spike in demand this November online sales period. “Same day delivery is here to stay and businesses that aren’t embracing the benefits of e-commerce and same-day delivery are simply missing out on lucrative opportunities,” says Mr Brett. According to Statista, 62 per cent of Gen Z consumers intended to shop on the latest Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales, while almost half of Gen Y, more than a quarter of Gen Z and nine per cent of Baby Boomers planned to check out online. “We’re forecasting big demand for the end-of-year online sales period this year in particular, before we again see a boom in same-day delivery demand in the lead-up to Christmas. “Consumers today generally have a mentality that they “want it now”. Because Sherpa is synonymous with same-day delivery and we have set the timeframe bar so high, we are delivering a lot more during key retail periods, working with a lot more businesses and covering a much wider area of the country than ever before. “Sherpa now has more than 70,000 Australian business customers – from big retailers such as Woolworths, Dan Murphy’s and Chemist Warehouse, to SMEs trading across a spectrum of categories. We’ve completed more than seven-million same day deliveries, we have a national fleet of more than 11,000 drivers, and we operate across 21 Australian cities… and that has all happened in less than a decade!” adds Mr Brett. According to KPMG, 80 per cent of retail CEOs say customer expectations are increasing around delivery; they want more delivery options and online delivery speed.  Additionally, according to Invespcro, 80 per cent of shoppers want same-day shipping, while 61 per cent want their packages even faster — within 1-3 hours of placing an order. While only a few retailers were able to offer ultra-fast delivery in the past, that has all changed as a result of the gig economy and platform business model adopted by companies such as Sherpa. Sherpa’s suggested seven starter considerations for businesses that aren’t offering same-day delivery are: Make the call sooner rather than later! Your Go/No decision point on whether to enable same day delivery for this year’s November online sales period is on the verge of crunch time. Whether it’s to launch with a bang or just to dip your toe in the water by shoring up carrier redundancy during the peak online sales, you still have options available but don’t leave it too long to make the call. Assess whether your order management system supports a same-day delivery service. Click & Collect is the litmus test here – if you already have it in place, you are halfway there in terms of the internal processes required. Consider how you can can best fulfil the service. Do you have the space and staff bandwidth to deliver from your store network or perhaps an alternative arrangement such as directly from your distribution centre is more fitting to your business? Determine how you will manifest the delivery orders. Your budget for technology will likely steer your decision. It could be by manually uploading onto a web portal, or via a middleware platform or through API (Application Programming Interface). Set your service radius – How far from your store or distribution centre will your same day delivery service cover? If you want to on-demand deliver within a couple of hours, this will be a shorter distance by necessity than if you deliver up to 9pm and have most of the day for the delivery driver to travel further afield. Determine how much to charge your customers. Same-day delivery is a premium option, above your traditional standard and express services and thus, should be charged as such; potentially up to 25 per cent more than express. Your free delivery shopping basket threshold should be higher too. Plan your means of promoting the service. Will it be shouted about on your homepage and across your social media channels or simply kept to the ‘Shipping & Delivery’ section of your website to start? Should you consider advertising or PR activities to promote the service? September 24, 1825 – Frances Watkins Harper born as a free woman, African-American abolitionist, lecturer, poet, and author; she published her first book of poetry at age 20, and became the first American black woman to publish a short story, “Two Offers,” in the Anglo-African in 1859. Her novel Iola Leroy,  published in 1892, was widely praised.  She was part of the Underground Railroad in the 1850s, and was a public speaker for the American Anti-Slavery Society, and an advocate for woman suffrage and prohibition. In 1894, she was a co-founder of the National Association of Colored Women, and served as its first vice president. September 24, 1825 – Bhikaiji Cama born, Indian independence activist; she received a better-than-average education, and showed a flair for languages. At age 24, she married Rustom Cama, a pro-British lawyer who aspired to enter politics. It was not a happy marriage, and she spent her time on social and philanthropic projects. When famine and then plague hit, she volunteered as part of a team working out of the Grant Medical College to nurse the sick, then contracted the disease herself, but survived in a much weakened state. She left India in 1902 for medical treatment in London, where she met Shyamji Krishna Varma, an Indian nationalist well known for his fiery speeches in Hyde Park. Through him she became private secretary to Dadabhai Naoroji, president of the British Committee of the Indian National Congress, and supported the founding of the Indian Home Rule Society in 1905. She then went to Paris, and co-founded the Paris Indian Society. She wrote and distributed revolutionary articles for pro-nationalist weekly papers, which were smuggled into India. In 1907, she spoke about famine in India at the Socialist Congress in Stuttgart, Germany, and appealed for human rights, and autonomy for her country, unfurling a “flag of Indian Independence” she made, based in the 1906 Calcutta Flag. In 1909, Scotland Yard arrested several key activists living in Great Britain, and requested Cama’s extradition from France, but the French government refused to cooperate. The British government then seized Cama’s inheritance. Inspired by the campaign for women’s suffrage in Britain, in 1910 she spoke in Cairo, asking, “I see here the representatives of only half the population of Egypt. May I ask where is the other half? Sons of Egypt, where are the daughters of Egypt? Where are your mothers and sisters? Your wives and daughters?” However, she believed that India must first become independent, and then women could work for their rights. With the outbreak of WWI in 1914, the members of the Paris India Society were scattered, and some of them were deported. Cama, in poor health, was allowed to stay in Bordeaux, on condition that she report weekly to local police. She remained in exile in Europe until 1935, when she was paralysed by a stroke and gravely ill. She petitioned the British government to be allowed to return to India, but had to renounce seditious activities before she was allowed to leave. Cama arrived in Bombay in November 1935, and died in August 1936. September 24, 1873 – María de las Mercedes Adam de Aróstegui born, Cuban composer and pianist who worked mostly in Spain, and often gave concerts with Pablo Casals. September 24, 1890 – Woodruff Manifesto: Under pressure from the U.S government, Wilford Woodruff, president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issues an “authoritative and binding” statement renouncing plural marriage. September 24, 1898 – Charlotte Moore Sitterly born, American astronomer and astrophysicist; organized, analyzed, and published definitive books on the solar spectrum and spectral line multiplets. She worked as a human computer at the Princeton University Observatory after graduating from Swarthmore College in 1920. At the observatory, she collaborated with Professor Henry Norris Russell researching binary stars, stellar mass, and the classification of stars based on their spectra. They co-published the results of their five years of work at Princeton extensively. She then became part of a team at the Mount Wilson Observatory working on solar spectroscopy, identifying chemical elements in the Sun. Unable to study at Princeton because they did not accept women, she earned a Ph.D. in astronomy in 1931 from the University of California, Berkeley. Moore then returned to Princeton to continue her work with Russell, but as a research assistant. She identified technetium in sunlight, the first example of technetium naturally existing. In 1937, she married Bancroft W. Sitterly, a physics professor, but continued to publish under her maiden name. She was also honored in 1937 with the Annie Jump Cannon Award in Astronomy. From 1945 to 1989, she worked for both the National Bureau of Standards, which published her tables of atomic spectra and energy levels, and the Naval Research Laboratory. In 1949, she was the first woman elected as an associate of Great Britain’s Royal Astronomical Society, and in 1961, received the Federal Woman’s Award. She continued her research until her death in 1990 at the age of 91. September 24, 1898 – Charlotte van Pallandt born, Dutch sculptor and painter, best known for her portrait busts. She studied at the Ealing School of Art in Londin, then returned to the Netherlands, where she became a member of the Pulchri Studio. She married in 1919, but divorced in 1924. After spending time in Paris, she began sculpting. In 1928, she went to Italy, and in 1929, she stopped painting to focus entirely on sculpting. One of her sculptures won second prize at the Paris Exposition of 1937. During WWII, she remained in Amsterdam. In 1948, she had her first solo exhibition at the gallery of Santee Landweer in Amsterdam, which, at the age of 50, brought her major attention for the first time. She became a founding member of De Zeester, a circle of women artists.  In 1963, she was awarded the title Ridder in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau, and in 1968, she produced the notable bronze statue of Queen Wilhelmina which stands in front of Noordeinde Palace. In 1973 she was honored with the title “Officier in de Orde van Oranje-Nassau.” She died in 1997 at age 98. The Charlotte van Pallandt-prijs is now an annual award given to promising young sculptors.   September 24, 1901 – Alexandra Adler born, Austrian neurologist who emigrated to the U.S in 1935; she conducted a study in 1937 with Tracy Jackson Putnam on the brain of a multiple sclerosis victim. Illustrations from the study are frequently used in medical literature. Her detailed studies on 500 survivors of the 1942 fire at the Cocoanut Grove nightclub in Boston is noted as some of the earliest research on posttraumatic stress disorder. Adler discovered that many of the survivors suffered from unsettled grief, particular changes in personality such as guilt and diminished vitality, and an increase in sleep disturbances and anxiety. September 24, 1902 – Cheryl Crawford born, legendary independent theater producer; her successes include Porgy and Bess and Brigadoon.      September 24, 1914 – Esther Eng born, Cantonese-American film director; first woman director of Chinese-language films in the U.S., recognized as a pioneer who crossed boundaries of race, gender, language, and culture; at 19, she became a film producer when her father and his business partners formed a film production company; she began in 1936 as co-producer on the film Heartache, directed by Frank Tang. In 1937, she started directing  with National Heroine, about a woman pilot fighting for her country, then Ten Thousand Lovers, Storm of Envy and It’s A Women’s World which had an all female cast showcasing 36 women in different professions, and Golden Gate Girl. After making several other films, she went into the restaurant business in New York in 1950. Most of her films have been lost, except for Golden Gate Girl and one other she co-directed, only shooting the exterior scenes. September 24, 1916 – Ruth Leach Amonette born, American business executive and educator. In 1943, she became the first woman executive and first woman vice president at IBM, at the age of 27, one of the very few high-ranking women in corporate America. She had graduated from University of California, Berkeley with a degree in political science in 1937. In 1939, she was hired to work at San Francisco’s Golden Gate International Exposition, demonstrating IBM typewriters. IBM then sent her for training in service system work, and she was assigned to their Atlanta Georgia office. In 1940, she became a teacher for IBM’s Department of Education in Endicott New York, training women from all over the country in selling IBM products. Amonette was promoted to IBM Secretary of Education three months later, and then an IBM Vice President in 1943. In 1947, she contracted tuberculosis, and had to take a medical leave, but returned to work the same year. In addition to her work at IBM, she served on several boards, including the Camp Fire Girls, the New York Public Library, and the American Association of University Women.  She retired in 1953 at the age of 37, and got married in 1954. She was inducted into the Women in Technology International Hall of Fame in 1996. Her memoir, Among Equals, was published in 1999, the year that she died. September 24, 1931 – Elizabeth Blackadder born, Scottish painter and printmaker; first woman to be elected to both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy, noted for still lifes and landscapes, and her ...

I Was Completely Burned Out. Then, A 3-Word Setting On My IPhone Changed Everything – Inc. https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/i-was-completely-burned-out-then-a-3-word-setting-on-my-iphone-changed-everything-inc/ It wasn’t a matter of not liking what I do, or no longer finding it sufficiently challenging, or even a matter of not making enough money. All of those boxes were checked.   But after several years of working diligently through the pandemic, building a small business, and having the satisfaction of reaching millions of people through my work, I’d never really had the chance to unplug completely for any significant amount of time.  A day off here, a day off there, sure. Holiday visits with extended family? Yes, we did that. We even spent a week at the beach a couple of times.  But, even on these trips, I’d always find myself pecking away on my laptop after my family went to bed at night–catching up on just one more thing that had to be done.  Or else, checking my phone 10 times a day to see if things that needed to happen in my various work projects actually had happened. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan: I wasn’t getting a vacation. I was just getting a change of scenery. The paradox was puzzling Come to think of it, “checking my phone 10 times a day” is a true understatement. I probably don’t want to admit the actual number.  The point was, I saw warning signs, but I also faced a dilemma: On the one hand, my family and I clearly needed time away, unplugged to the maximum possible extent. On the other hand, I hadn’t yet built my business and my work to the point where it could run without me for days or weeks at a time. The paradox was puzzling, but maybe not unfamiliar. More so, because I was confident that getting away would allow me to rest my mind and come back new approaches to my daily challenges. But, it was precisely those daily challenges that made it seem like I couldn’t get away. Then, early this summer I found the answer in an unexpected place, while staring at my iPhone after a long day’s work, as the battery percentage fell below 20 percent. An alert flashed on the screen, giving me the option to turn on: “Low Power Mode.” ‘Low Power Mode’ How many times had I seen this warning appear over the years? How little thought had I given it? Just swipe the screen, watch the battery icon turn from green to yellow, and move on. But now, I laughed: “That’s what I need in my life,” I thought. “I don’t want to quit what I do. I don’t want my output to the world to go dark.”  I just want to turn on “Low Power Mode.” Mind blown.  Over the next few weeks, I used “Low Power Mode” as the metaphor that guided all of my preparations. I had already scheduled a trip away, but now I added a bit of buffer time before and after the actual travel, so that my calendar showed a full 21 days off in August and early September. Then, I set out to pare down everything I did professionally each day, figure out what was truly the “Low Power Mode” version — the minimum requirements to keep things going — and find ways to schedule that bare minimum ahead of time. Start with the minimum Probably the biggest example had to do with the email newsletter I write five days a week, called Understandably. Most days — every Monday through Friday, all year long — the newsletter includes both an original essay and a series of links to things going on that I think will help my readers understand the world. More than 160,000 people subscribe to it, and it’s a big part of my work. But, the truth is that I never have three weeks worth of newsletters set and ready to go ahead of time. (I wish!) So, necessity became the mother of invention. I told my readers what I intended to do, and even asked for permission in a way. Instead of shutting down, I told them, I planned to pull back: a shorter newsletter, fewer up-to-the-minute components, and even reruns. (This made a lot of sense, I realized, because my audience had grown to the point that the vast majority of my readers today weren’t around to have read some of the good work I did in the earlier days.) Anyway, I went ahead, and “Low Power Mode,” as I explicitly called it, meant three things: First, I was able to create and schedule my three weeks of content ahead of time. Second, paradoxically, the percentage of readers who decided to upgrade free subscriptions to the paid, premium edition of my newsletter went up about 60 percent during the three weeks I was gone. (My theory on this is that the “low power mode” products were shorter, but still had the same number of exhortations to upgrade.) Finally, most importantly, I was able to take a nice, long, badly needed vacation. Just as I’d hoped, my subconscious seems to have worked on some of the biggest challenges I’ve been facing, so that I came back excited about new solutions. Forget ‘quiet quitting’ A few weeks after I’ve returned, I still find myself thinking about the metaphor of Low Power Mode. I think it’s a powerful alternative to the two extremes we’ve seen so much written about during the last few years: First, hustle culture, which it seems had everyone working nonstop, as hard as they could, trying to achieve and make money before the music stops. Heck, we even had people bragging about how little sleep they got for a while. Second, the extreme other reaction: the great resignation or else, quiet quitting, with people deciding they’ve simply had enough and aren’t willing to participate any longer, almost no matter the cost. But on your device, Low Power Mode means slowing down certain processes, not updating as often, and generally using less power so that you stretch things out until you plug in again. Isn’t that what a lot of us want to do right now? Not quit and go live on an island somewhere–but instead, find a way to step back temporarily. Do only what’s absolutely required to keep things going for a while, rest and rejuvenate, and then return stronger. If borrowing the name of a setting on your iPhone makes it easier to accomplish, I think it’s well worth the label.

Emergency Declared In Florida As Tropical Storm Ian Strengthenss Business Standard
Emergency Declared In Florida As Tropical Storm Ian Strengthenss – Business Standard https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/emergency-declared-in-florida-as-tropical-storm-ian-strengthenss-business-standard/ Gov. Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for all of Florida as Tropical Storm Ian gained strength over the Caribbean and was forecast to become a major hurricane soon days as it tracked toward the state. DeSantis had initially issued the emergency order for two dozen counties on Friday. But he on Saturday expanded the warning to the entire state, urging residents to prepare for a storm that could lash large swaths of Florida. This storm has the potential to strengthen into a major hurricane and we encourage all Floridians to make their preparations, DeSantis said in a statement. We are coordinating with all state and local government partners to track potential impacts of this storm. US President Joe Biden also declared an emergency for the state, authorising the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to coordinate disaster relief efforts and provide assistance to protect lives and property. The president postponed a scheduled September 27 trip to Florida due to the storm. The National Hurricane Centre said Ian was forecast to strengthen before moving over western Cuba and toward the west coast of Florida and the Florida Panhandle by the middle of next week. The agency said Floridians should have hurricane plans in place and advised residents to monitor updates of the storm’s evolving path. Ian was expected to become a hurricane Sunday and a major hurricane as soon as late Monday. The storm had top sustained winds of 50 mph (85 kph) Saturday night as it swirled about 395 miles (630 kilometres) southeast of Grand Cayman, in the Cayman Islands. A hurricane warning was in effect for the island, and hurricane watches were issued for western Cuba. Ian forecast to begin rapidly intensifying, the hurricane centre reported. John Cangialosi, a senior hurricane specialist at the Miami-based centre said it wasn’t yet clear exactly where Ian will hit hardest in Florida. He said the state’s residents should begin preparing for the storm, including gathering supplies for potential power outages. Too soon to say if it’s going to be a southeast Florida problem or a central Florida problem or just the entire state, he said. So at this point really the right message for those living in Florida is that you have to watch forecasts and get ready and prepare yourself for potential impact from this tropical system. In Pinellas Park, near Tampa, people were waiting in line at a Home Depot when it opened at 6 am, the Tampa Bay Times reported. Manager Wendy Macrini said the store had sold 600 cases of water by the early afternoon and ran out of generators. People also were buying up plywood to put over their windows: Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it, Matt Beaver, of Pinellas Park, told the Times. The governor’s declaration frees up emergency protective funding and activates members of the Florida National Guard, his office said. His order stresses that there is risk for a storm surge, flooding, dangerous winds and other weather conditions throughout the state. Elsewhere, powerful post-tropical cyclone Fiona crashed ashore early on Saturday in Nova Scotia in the Atlantic Canada region. The storm washed houses into the sea, tore rooftops off others and knocked out power to the vast majority of two Canadian provinces with more than 500,000 customers affected at the storm’s height. Fiona had transformed from a hurricane into a post-tropical storm late Friday, but it still had hurricane-strength winds and brought drenching rains and huge waves. There was no confirmation of fatalities or injuries. He said: “Untrained meat inspectors (no expertise); inadequatenumbers of inspectors; weak and inadequate provisions in the law; poor enforcement of existing laws; and placing of abattoirs under local councils’ control, are parts of the problems causing spike in unsafe and unwholesome meat in the state.”     Aroso noted that Lagos NVMA has been making concerted efforts at improving meat hygiene in the state, one of which is regular media campaign, adding that it will continue to educate members of the public on the dangers of consuming unwholesome meat. Wyoming Live Updates Score, Results, Highlights, For Saturday’s NCAA Football Game – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/byu-vs-wyoming-live-updates-score-results-highlights-for-saturdays-ncaa-football-game-cbs-sports/ The Wyoming Cowboys have enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they must head out on the road. They will take on the BYU Cougars at 10:15 p.m. ET on Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium. Wyoming isn’t expected to win, but seeing as the odds didn’t stop them last game, maybe the squad has another upset up their sleeve. Things were close when the Cowboys and the Air Force Falcons clashed last week, but Wyoming ultimately edged out the opposition 17-14. Wyoming’s RB Titus Swen looked sharp as he rushed for one TD and 102 yards on 19 carries. Meanwhile, the afternoon started off rough for BYU last week, and it ended that way, too. Their bruising 41-20 defeat to the Oregon Ducks might stick with them for a while. BYU was down 38-7 at the end of the third quarter, which was just too much to recover from. QB Jaren Hall put forth a good effort for the losing side as he passed for two TDs and 305 yards on 41 attempts. The Cowboys are now 3-1 while the Cougars sit at 2-1. A pair of defensive stats to keep in the back of your head while watching: Wyoming enters the game with ten sacks, good for 11th best in the nation. As for BYU, they come into the matchup boasting the 30th fewest passing yards allowed per game in the nation at 178.7. Season Leaders passing A. Peasley592 YD, 3 TDS, 2 INTS A. And that’s the theme I have explored in my recently published paper, i.e., Revamping the Marketing World with Metaverse – The Future of Marketing,” Khatri said.  Previously, Khatri published his paper ‘How Digital Marketing along with Artificial Intelligence is Transforming Consumer Behaviour?’ in the International Journal for Research in Applied Science and Engineering Technology while another paper ‘Digital Marketing and Artificial Intelligence for Evaluating Powerful Customer Experience,’ published in International Journal of Innovative Science and Research Technology.

The Museum Of Curiosities: 130 Of The Weirdest Things Shared On This Twitter Page Bored Panda
“The Museum Of Curiosities”: 130 Of The Weirdest Things Shared On This Twitter Page – Bored Panda https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-museum-of-curiosities-130-of-the-weirdest-things-shared-on-this-twitter-page-bored-panda/ There are three things that we believe without a shadow of a doubt. First of all, Planet Earth is ruled by a shadowy cabal of Feline Overlords—The Illumeownati who spread their influence through cat pics. Secondly, pineapple definitely belongs on pizza, and there’s nothing you can say that’ll change our minds. And finally: fact really is stranger than fiction. The past is a far stranger land than many of us assume. We’re surrounded by weirdness every day on the internet, on the subway, and in our very own minds. But after taking a good long peek through the fuzzy black-and-white static into the decades and centuries that came before us, we can safely say that we’ve always been living in an extended special of The Twilight Zone. From weird vintage contraptions, knick-knacks, and clothes to bamboozling products, ads, and inventions, some of the strangest things that human history and creativity has to offer end up being shared on ‘The Museum of Curiosities’ Twitter page, run by the Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow musical group. Cue the creepy carnival music and grab a bag of popcorn, Pandas, we’re about to travel back in time for a heavy dose of Weirdness with a capital ‘W.’ Don’t forget your fave pics, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments. Just… don’t feed the clowns. Intrigued by the pics? Check out Monsieur Pompier’s socials and album, too. Their music has a pretty cool vibe. Bored Panda got in touch with Paul, aka Monsieur Pompier himself, and he was kind enough to tell us about the ‘The Museum of Curiosities.’ An incredibly cool thing is that he’s actually planning on turning it into a real-life museum! This is the very first time he’s revealed this publicly. “The big news is that I am turning the museum into a reality! Next year I am hoping to open my own real-life physical Museum of Curiosities here in my hometown of Dublin, Ireland. I can’t say much more about it for now, but if anyone would like to help make this dream a reality they can donate here.” Check out our full interview below, Pandas! More info: Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | Album | MonsieurPompier.com | Donate Paul, aka Monsieur Pompier, revealed to Bored Panda that originally, ‘The Museum of Curiosities’ was called ‘Vintage Oddities.’ “Then, after that, I used the account more as a vehicle for my band Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow. Over the past year or so I decided to go back to my roots with the account and focus more on weird curiosities and oddities of the past, especially as the idea to launch my own ‘real life’ museum was building day by day,” he said. “I took big inspiration from one of my favourite websites on the internet ‘The Museum of Ridiculously Interesting Things’ curated by Dr. Chelsea Nichols and Viktor Wynd’s ‘Museum Of Curiosities’ in London as well as a bunch of other museums both real and fictional who operate in the same strange world as me. I’m a magpie for anything oddball and unusual, especially from the past so I’m always on the lookout for stories about things like old medical devices, bad taxidermy, the occult, bad inventions, weird unsolved mysteries, and so on. Monsieur Pompier shared his thoughts with Bored Panda about why the Twitter account’s content resonates with so many people. “People are always looking for something outside of the ordinary, something beyond their reality or as an escape from mundanity. It’s probably similar to the success of ghost stories or horror movies, there seems to be a magnetism towards what frightens or unsettles us,” he said. “I think particularly now as we’re living through the sterility of the internet age, these strange physical objects of the past with fascinating back stories harness an even greater aura of mystery and shine a light on bygone times and customs.” Paul mused that when the people of the future look back on this era, they might actually see it as “the second wave of quack medicine, with self-medication and the power of pharmaceutical companies growing all the time.” “Elsewhere, some of the face masks and skincare treatments currently available very much hark back to the often mocked beauty treatments of the 1930s and ’40s. One thing I hope we will look back on with a great deal of cringe is the prevalence of the ‘laughing-crying’ emoji.” Finally, we were incredibly interested to hear about Paul’s band, Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow, their inspiration, and their passion for music. “Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow is my very eccentric rock group and sometimes cabaret act. We’ve been performing all around Europe and in our homeland of Ireland since 2018 with a rotating cast of characters including The Ear Fairy, Guts The Cat, The Crabbit, as well as newcomers such as Betty Bogweed and Sister Whispers. On stage, I attempt to sing my ridiculous songs whilst the ‘freaks’ interact with me or the audience as they interpret and act out the story of their individual songs,” he said. “Our shows are very surreal and often end up in complete chaos—it’s all about getting people out of their comfort zones. Last year, we were proud to release our debut album Teatime Terrors on Cleopatra Records and since then we’ve transformed into a fully-fledged four-piece live band. In many ways, the museum is an extension and evolution of the Travelling Freakshow, taking the concept to the next level.” Monsieur Pompier draws inspiration from horror stories, unsolved mysteries, psychedelia, experimental and new wave music, children’s television of the 1970s and ’80s. I enjoy taking mundane topics and blowing them up into something theatrical and grandiose—like a new song I’m working on called ‘Billy Breakfast’ about a neglected housewife who has an affair with her breakfast when the face in the pan comes to life.” At the time of writing, ‘The Museum of Curiosities’ had 17.4k loyal followers on Twitter. They focus on highlighting the unusual, the peculiar, and the low-key unsettling in their social media posts, and we think it works perfectly. We don’t know about you, Pandas, but we’re pretty big fans of vintage weirdness. It’s a lot of fun when you start digging up all the odd ideas and behaviors the people of the past lived with. It helps put our modern world into context and how, after a few decades, we too might seem like complete oddballs to the humanity of the future. ‘The Museum of Curiosities’ is the brainchild of Monsieur Pompier’s Travelling Freakshow troupe. “A nightmarish cabaret steeped in the surreal, Monsieur Pompier makes music about inside-out cats, hedgehog swallowers, and devious doctors,” the band writes on its website. The aim of the musical group is to “unite all oddballs and outcasts welcoming them into his midst with open arms.” In short, they’re all about inspiring others to embrace their own inner weirdness, and learning to recognize it—with a wide, toothy smile—in others. Created in 2017, the band signed up with Cleopatra Records in 2021. Their debut album, Teatime Terrors, is available in digital form, as well as in vinyl, which we think really suits the group’s vibe. Vintage weirdness is a fascinating topic, and one that we’ve touched upon a number of times here at Bored Panda. For instance, a single glance at how much the beauty industry has changed over the past couple of centuries can really make your jaw drop. Dr. Jane Nicholas, from St. Jerome’s University at the University of Waterloo, previously explained to Bored Panda that, as the world became more modern, more and more people moved to cities from the countryside. As such, it became difficult to know who everyone was, meaning that people began judging each other even more based on their appearances. This led to the beauty industry having even greater importance than before. “When dislocated from their context, what was typical in one time period seems strange in another. Today, we see the highly filtered, fully made up selfie as quite ordinary. When you pause to consider it though, it is interesting to think about how those reflect changes in technology (both digital and in cosmetics), as well as in dominant presumptions of what is considered beautiful. It can also be reflective of the democratization of techniques in lighting and makeup application that were historically reserved for insiders within modeling. Now, anyone can use them,” Dr. Nicholas explained to Bored Panda. “Using X-rays for hair removal [in the past], for example, also reflects the fact that technology emerges before the full impact of its use is known,” she said. “It’s quite ordinary today to inject a form of botulism into your face or to dress in the skin of another animal. Over time, though, as our collective beliefs and values change, these ordinary acts might come to be seen as extraordinary.” Meanwhile, psychologist Lee Chambers told Bored Panda that the audience enjoys analyzing at the darker, stranger aspects of the human condition because of how we’re wired. “When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards,” he said. “But in today’s safe and often sanitized world, we are rarely threatened significantly, and the ability to explore evil, frightening and gruesome entertainment is one of the few ways we can visit this part of humanity while remaining safe and comfortable. There is a level of novelty to it, it removes boredom quickly, and it helps us to discover our emotional limits,” he explained why, for instance, many people are so drawn to the true crime genre. Moscow Exchange Suggests Issuing Crypto Receipts For Those Afraid Of Blockchain – Exchanges Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/moscow-exchange-suggests-issuing-crypto-receipts-for-those-afraid-of-blockchain-exchanges-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ The Moscow Exchange has proposed to legalize the issuance of receipts for digital financial assets. The trading platform says this will allow custodians to offer clients who are not ready for distributed ledgers to essentially work with securities. MOEX also plans to become a licensed crypto exchange operator. Largest Russian Stock Exchange Gears Up to Enter Digital Asset Market The leading exchange for equities and derivatives in Russia has drafted new legislation that would authorize depositories to issue receipts for digital financial assets (DFAs). In current Russian law, the broad term ‘DFAs’ encompasses cryptocurrencies in the absence of a more precise definition, but mainly refers to digital coins and tokens that have an issuer. Under such arrangement, DFA receipts can be traded as securities, explained Sergey Shvetsov, who heads the supervisory board of the Moscow Exchange (MOEX). During the latest edition of the International Banking Forum, the official emphasized that the exchange “will naturally enter this market” and stated: We have prepared a project that allows you to issue receipts for digital assets, then these receipts are circulated as securities. MOEX has already filed the respective bill with the Central Bank of Russia (CBR) and will also coordinate the initiative with the Ministry of Finance. The legislation will provide those who are not ready to work with distributed ledgers and afraid of custodial risks an opportunity to transfer these risks and be able to issue securities, Shvetsov added. “In order for DFAs to develop, we want to propose that the market itself makes the choice – blockchain accounting or depositary accounting,” he further elaborated, reminding the audience that the Moscow Exchange also wants to obtain a license from the CBR to operate as a digital asset exchange. In August, MOEX announced its intention to launch a DFA-based product by the end of the year. “If such a law is adopted, Russian depositories will be able to accumulate DFAs on their accounts in the blockchain and give receipts against them to their clients. As soon as a customer needs the underlying asset, he would cancel the receipt and receive his digital asset on his blockchain account,” Shvetsov was quoted as saying by the Prime business news agency. Support has been growing in Moscow to permit the use of digital assets such as cryptocurrencies for international settlements amid sanctions, while it’s still unclear if regulators will allow their free circulation inside the country. In any case, Russia must create its own crypto infrastructure, according to the head of the parliamentary Financial Market Committee. Anatoly Aksakov recently said that the stock exchanges in Moscow and Saint Petersburg are ready to provide it. Bike MS Raises Millions, Cyclists Finish In Ocean City – OCNJ Daily https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/bike-ms-raises-millions-cyclists-finish-in-ocean-city-ocnj-daily/ More than 4,000 cyclists join together during the event to battle MS. By MADDY VITALE Adam Stein has had multiple sclerosis for four and a half years. He is just 29. After the diagnosis, Stein got on a regimen to keep up his health. “I follow a protocol for overcoming MS. It is a holistic approach to keep my health up to fight MS,” Stein said, adding that doctor-prescribed medications are also important. “It is not always easy.” Stein and his family were part of the Bike MS: City to Shore Ride on Saturday. They were among 4,000 cyclists who took the trek from Cherry Hill, Mays Landing and Hammonton to Ocean City to raise money for programs and research in hopes of finding a cure for MS. Cyclists and their teams raised $4 million as of Saturday afternoon for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and it was likely to increase throughout the day. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a potentially disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord, the central nervous system. Adam Stein with his girlfriend, Ellie Goetz, surrounded by their families and friend. From left, Rob and Sam Goetz, Elliot Stein, Eric and Diane Stein and Claudia Dorn. Stein’s girlfriend, Ellie Goetz, 28, also of Philadelphia, turned to look at Adam and said, “He is doing really good.” Her brother, Sam Goetz, and father, Rob Goetz, joined Stein’s brother, Elliot Stein, and parents, Diane and Eric Stein, to create, “Team Adam.” The families biked from Mays Landing, a 20-mile route to Ocean City in Bike MS. They even asked Claudia Dorn, of Mays Landing, who was biking in her first Bike MS ever, to join their team and she did. “It was very nice to ride with them and to see a young man with MS riding and doing so well,” Dorn said. “It was a wonderful experience.” There were two other routes, the one through Cherry Hill — a 75-mile and 100-mile route — and a 40-mile route from Hammonton. Ocean City is always the finish line for the thousands of cyclists who raise their hands in victory as crowds cheer them on each year. The finish line at Fifth Street and the Boardwalk is adjacent to the parking lot by the Sports & Civic Center. It was opened to cyclists who gathered with their families to chat, get something to eat and pick up T-shirts to commemorate the milestone. Barbara Anderson, 51, of Paramus, N.J., and her friend, Lynn Veenstra, 57, of North Haledon, N.J., participated in their first Bike MS. They left from the Hammonton route. Anderson was diagnosed with MS in 2018 and since then, she, like Adam Stein, has worked on the holistic approach to staying well. She focuses on a healthy lifestyle, which includes regular exercise. “When I first learned I had MS, I would wake up and wonder what was going to happen to me,” Anderson explained. “I am actually doing great. I stay healthy and active. It really gives me a new perspective on things.” For Veenstra, it was a personal goal of hers to join in something that would benefit her friend and others, as well as herself. “It really was two-fold why I did Bike MS,” she noted. “It was to raise money for MS and also I have had my own health issues, so it was a personal goal to get back to biking.” Anderson and Veenstra were part of the MOR Wealth Management team, one of the Top 5 fundraisers for the event, they said. Anderson was also an individual top fundraiser. “Honestly, donations were coming in through Facebook when I was riding over the bridge into Ocean City,” Anderson said. “It was such a cool feeling.” Dana Gold, a representative of Bike MS, said she was so excited by the number of new cyclists that joined Bike MS this year, approximately 800. Gold noted that the minimum fundraising amount needed to participate is $300, and many exceed that goal. She added that there is a robust “rookie ride” program to help new riders with raising funds and navigating the route. Gold said she believes that the reason for the impressive number of new participants has, in part, to do with the positive reputation of the Bike MS organization. “We have loyal teams, and we also have a whole lot of volunteers for the program,” she added. One of the loyal volunteers is longtime fundraiser and volunteer for Bike MS, Matt Ramer, of Philadelphia. Ramer raised the most money to fight MS for the 2021 event, as he did in 2018. He was also one of the top fundraisers for this year’s event, Gold noted. And each year he volunteers to take photos of the event. Marisa Hull, vice president of Bike MS, who watched as the riders were crossing the finish line, said that this year’s event was shaping up to be a major success, one of the biggest in its 43 years. “This is really one of the first full years since the COVID-19 pandemic,” Hull said of the event’s cancellation in 2020 during the height of the pandemic. “We are really excited about riders coming into Ocean City.” This is the second-largest Bike MS in the world.” Hull said that Ocean City as a community has truly welcomed the Bike MS participants and organizers. She added that the significance of the event can be far reaching. “Being a participant, you are helping people who are living with MS. You are helping the world,” Hull said. And for the riders, such as Adam Stein and Barbara Anderson, who have MS and participate in the event, Hull said this, “It inspires others to see someone with MS riding.” Stein said he hopes to be a part of the Bike MS event for many years to come. “I feel some sense of camaraderie and community being a part of the ride today,” he said. “I feel better than I have in years.” For more information about Bike MS and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, visit mssociety.donordrive.com.

The Bengals are off to an awful start just one season after reaching the Super Bowl and will look to rebound from the previous two weeks against a rebuilding Jets squad that mounted a comeback Week 2 win against the Cleveland Browns behind Joe Flacco and Garrett Wilson. Facebook Charity Initiative Provides Homeless People VR Rigs To Wander Streets Of Metaverse – Hard Drive https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/facebook-charity-initiative-provides-homeless-people-vr-rigs-to-wander-streets-of-metaverse-hard-drive/ BY Camden Brazile ON September 24, 2022 MENLO PARK, Calif. — Meta announced a new initiative to give back to the California community by providing local unhoused residents their own Meta-branded VR headset as a way to integrate them into Zuckerberg’s Metaverse project. “With how necessary and rapidly-advancing technology has become, so many members of the world are deemed archaic and left out of the modern trends,” Zuckerberg said. “With Meta’s new charity push, we sought to give unhoused people access to the most realistic, life-like world to explore completely free of charge. Conversely, this helps Meta expand the reality of its digital world, with online users now being hassled for digital currency by actual, real homeless people. Truly amazing.” Henry Right, a local homeless man chosen for Meta’s program, expressed his gratitude to the corporation for giving him a chance at civilized society.  “I was forced out of my home after losing my job, I thought I had lost everything,” Right said. “But after Mr. Zuckerberg gave me these goggles, I got to start all over again. Yes, things like businesses and private property are locked out to my avatar because of my unhoused profile, but it’s nice to be able to move up and down various street corners without having to leave my spot in the real world or get tired.” Facebook Philanthropy coordinator Moira Evans said the initiative is already seeing positive results.  “This promotion has been a smashing success so far,” said Evans. “Already users are reporting experiencing real, palpable fear walking downtown in the Metaverse at night, and our brilliant programmers have been able to code in every disease or deformity that the homeless users have into the digital realm.” At press time, Facebook was reported that after the charity event had concluded, all participants would be lucky enough to receive an itemized bill for their VR headset.

Star Trek: Lower Decks – 10 Other Franchises That Should Focus On Its Background Characters – Screen Rant https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/star-trek-lower-decks-10-other-franchises-that-should-focus-on-its-background-characters-screen-rant/ Star Trek: Lower Decks puts the focus on the background characters that wouldn’t traditionally be seen in regular Star Trek projects. It’s an opportunity to poke fun at the franchise through some meta-comedy, while also genuinely expanding the shared universe through some brilliant character arcs and threads that tie into other releases. Somehow because of the unique concept and approach Lower Decks, which recently enjoyed its third series, sometimes feels more Star Trek than other projects. Countless franchises may also benefit from this kind of world-building, through unexpected spinoffs that might just draw in audiences through their heart and humor. 10 Rick & Morty Rick & Morty features countless wacky dimensions and planets, full of whimsical and sometimes outright bizarre characters. Any one of them could be featured in their spinoff series and there’s always the potential for Rick & Morty to expand their sci-fi universe in this way. There are prime candidates like Birdperson that would make for an intriguing lead, but in the vein of Lower Decks, there are other avenues to explore, from the boring everyday life of an employee of the Galactic Federation to a Morty working in the Citadel (a plot thread which has been touched upon in the past). 9 Harry Potter Fantastic Beasts was an attempt to look at a lesser-known character in the Wizarding World, but completely missed the mark on what could have been achieved. There are numerous scenarios within the Harry Potter franchise that could lend themselves to a Lower Decks-style comedy. Whether they are a shop owner on Diagon Alley, a Hogwarts employee who works behind the scenes, or someone tasked with cleaning up the messes of wizards and witches in the Ministry of Magic, the very concept of the Wizarding World is perfect for launching niche fantasy spinoffs with minor characters. 8 Fast & The Furious The Fast & the Furious doesn’t on the surface offer the same opportunities as other franchises. However, imagine a character that’s witnessing the mad climactic heists and superhuman elements of this universe that are continuing to surface, each more chaotic than the last. There are certainly divisions of law enforcement or clean-up crews that will have to deal with the impact of Dom’s ‘family.’ That’s a concept that could really work; although there’s surely a chance to focus on low-level street racers as well, who usually fill up the background spots in larger Fast scenes. 7 Marvel Cinematic Universe The Marvel Cinematic Universe has briefly flirted with the notion that it might focus on lesser-known characters. While S.H.I.E.L.D. got its own series to explore the workings of the security agency, other entities like Damage Control haven’t been given the chance to expand on their own. The science fiction and fantasy elements of Marvel Comics lend themselves to a Lower Decks spinoff. Someone is having to clean up the mess of these superhero antics. Plus, there’s sure to be an interesting story to be told about being a thug or henchmen in the likes of Hydra. She-Hulkhas come the closest so far, looking at the universe from a law-focused narrative. 6 Men In Black Men In Black is one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of all time and yet there are still so many elements that fans don’t know about this fictional world. For the most part, audiences have been given a snapshot of what it’s like to work on the front lines, hunting down aliens. However, there’s definitely a lot of material to bring to the screen with regard to everyday life within the organization. The processing of new captives, the smaller diplomatic missions, and the logistics of mind-wiping everyone involved in an incident, are all examples of events that could populate a show. 5 James Bond James Bond continues to put the focus on the rest of MI6, if only for brief amounts of time. Moneypenny, M, Q, and the new 007 are all examples of other operatives that have been given the limelight alongside the titular protagonist. Surely they deserve their own series though. A James Bond spinoff could be really intriguing, even if it doesn’t necessarily focus on these named characters. There must be other agents going on exciting adventures, or fun threads to explore involving those who make all the gadgets alongside the Quartermaster. 4 Star Wars There are always smaller tales set within the galaxy far, far away that put the emphasis on the farmer, unnamed soldier, or perhaps diplomat. However, it’s rarely portrayed on screen, with the animated Star Wars shows doing a better job of capturing general life. There are plenty of opportunities to dive into concerning what it’s really like to live in the Star Wars universe. This kind of slice of life is an element that draws fans to The Mandalorian, but a comedy perhaps about working as a Stormtrooper, or within the Jedi Temple, might be a cool change of pace. 3 Jurassic Park Jurassic Park and Jurassic World actually introduced a huge range of characters. They never fully go into what it was like to work within these parks, as someone who isn’t the main protagonist. Nor did the sequel series actually investigate the world outside now that it is overrun by dinosaurs. The closest it came was the short film Battle at Big Rock which was both incredibly thrilling and compelling. There’s no reason that a live-action spinoff couldn’t continue on that same theme, perhaps an anthology about surviving in this brand-new landscape. 2 DC Comics Gotham Police Department is gaining its own series in the near future, and that’s a firm indication that DC Comics might be heading in the right direction when looking at Lower Decks-esque spinoffs. However, this isn’t a comedy in the same way Powerless was, which followed a similar concept. DC hasn’t quite managed to get it right thus far, but it’s certainly closer than other franchises. Life as a supervillain is also touched upon in the animated show Harley Quinnwhich manages to get everything right. These kinds of concepts are perfect, but DC could push them so much further, by really placing the spotlight on unknown or seemingly unimportant figures. 1 Pirates Of The Caribbean Pirates of the Caribbean has a genuinely rich landscape to explore but thus far the main focus has been Jack Sparrow’s adventures. Sure audiences have had the opportunity to see some other pirate empires in this cinematic universe, but it’s all through the lens of a few characters. What it’s like to work on one of these ships, or be a part of an establishment in Tortuga, can provide the kinds of comedy and lower-level character exploration that fans are looking for. The combination of realistic pirate lore and fantastical mythology is absolutely ripe for further storytelling. NEXT: The 10 Smartest Star Trek Characters In Lower Decks

The Last Of Us Show Trailer Release Cheekily Teased By Creators – Screen Rant https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-last-of-us-show-trailer-release-cheekily-teased-by-creators-screen-rant/ Creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann cheekily tease The Last of Us show trailer’s release ahead of the franchise’s annual celebratory day. Shortly after the first look being revealed for the series, creators Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann offer a cheeky tease of The Last of Us show’s trailer release. Based on Druckmann and Naughty Dog’s 2013 game of the same name, the upcoming post-apocalyptic drama centers on a smuggler named Joel as he travels across country with teenager Ellie, who may be the key to discovering a cure for the fungal infection that wiped out the world. Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey lead the cast of The Last of Us alongside Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Jeffrey Pierce, Anna Torv, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman and Storm Reid. Development on a Last of Us adaptation has languished in development hell for nearly a decade, with Druckmann having been set to write and Sam Raimi produce a film incarnation and an animated short film canceled by Sony. HBO landed the rights to the beloved game in early 2020 with Druckmann and Chernobyl‘s Craig Mazin attached to write the show together, leaving many hopeful for the adaptation to be faithful to the source material. Audiences got their first look at The Last of Us this past August and while a few months remain until it premieres, fans of the game may get proper footage for the show sooner than later. With just a few days remaining until the franchise’s annual celebration, Neil Druckmann took to Twitter to cheekily tease a major announcement for The Last of Us Day. Craig Mazin, co-creator of the HBO adaptation, responded with a similarly sly hint with a GIF of a quizzical Ellie, leaving many to wonder if it could be The Last of Us show trailer’s release. Check out the teasing interaction below: Could The Last of Us Show Trailer Premiere This Week? With no premiere date set for the show as of yet, it seems possible a Last of Us show trailer may not come in time for the franchise’s annual celebration. That said, given most reports have indicated the series is expected to arrive in early 2023, and Druckmann being the one to initiate the cheeky tease a major announcement coming during this year’s Last of Us Day, Mazin getting in on the fun seems to be a good indicator that some form of teaser will come in the near future for the show. Whether it be the official trailer or simply images for the long-awaited adaptation, chances seem high audiences are going to get a new look at The Last of Us show. Given there is still at least three months remaining until its premiere, it seems likely HBO would want to get audience feedback with The Last of Us trailer well in advance. If to look at the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog, whose initial marketing was slammed for the drastic changes made to its titular character, and the elongated development cycle of The Last of Us, it seems likely HBO would be eager to ensure audiences are just as excited in the approach to the material. Fans of the game will have to keep their eyes peeled when The Last of Us Day kicks off on September 26. Source: Craig Mazin/Twitter

New MiSci Exhibit An Ambitious Look At Advances In Communication Technology – The Daily Gazette – The Daily Gazette https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-misci-exhibit-an-ambitious-look-at-advances-in-communication-technology-the-daily-gazette-the-daily-gazette/ Humanity’s need to communicate has been a quest like no other and the technological advances that have affected how we do that is the basis for the new exhibit at the Museum of Innovation and Science. “Let’s Connect! Exploring Communication Technology” opened on Friday. “The exhibit focuses on the major changes over the years and how these innovations created those changes,” said Chris Hunter, vice president of collections and exhibitions. The exhibit, which is one of the largest the museum has produced, is broken into five parts. The first segment is communication without wires. Did you know that the human voice can carry 375 yards or that a shout in a calm open space can carry a little over a mile? But our ancestors a millenium ago needed to reach others in a more substantial way. “We have some small tablet seals from 2000 B.C. from Sumeria and an Egyptian scarab that has hieroglyphics on it,” Hunter said. Flags and torch systems eventually led to printing presses by the 1400s and then the first newspapers. The exhibit has a page on loan from the Liber Biblia Moralis from a German Bible of 1474. The second segment is communication with wires. This is all about the telegraph and Samuel Morse’s system of dots and dashes, which used electricity to send messages long distance. This inspired Alexander Graham Bell to use these electrical impulses to transmit the human voice in 1876 with his telephone. The third segment is about how radio captured the nation starting with the Capital Region’s own radio station WGY’s early dramas and the evolution into television. The fourth segment is how the use of radio waves has been applied beyond amateur radio to the federal government’s allocation of sections of the electromagnetic spectrum to various corporations and agencies. The final segment is about computers with a focus on satellite technology with mention of cellphones. While there is a “good chunk about Thomas Edison and the G.E. connection,” Hunter said, “a lot has to do with the human voice.” One of those examples was the use of air waves. Guglielmo Marconi invented radio in 1909 primarily for ships to be able to communicate with other ships while at sea. “When the Titantic sank in 1912, their distress signals went out but there was no regulation of air waves and all ships were on the same frequency,” Hunter said. “People were jamming the air waves with fake news that there was no distress, or that the ship had been rescued.” When rescue came it was too late, which eventually led to the establishment of the Federal Communication Commission in which today each ship has its own frequency just as each aircraft, wildlife organization, amateur radio operator or public broadband. Hunter said the outline of the exhibit came together quickly but the exhibit itself took about three years to organize. “The biggest challenge was to hone in on what to focus on and not bury people with too many cool facts or objects,” he said. Among the 150 objects are: a prototype of a 1964 radio antenna initially conceived by Roy Anderson in the 1960s for NASA that used a golf umbrella; a model of the first cellphones of 1983 as well as the most recent i-phone 4 from Apple; a 1960s Princess phone, which many of Hunter’s staff reminisced about. The toughest to track down, however, was an old wooden phone booth. “There are several glass and metal booths in the Adirondacks where cellphone reception is bad, but we got our 1960s wooden booth from a collector in Rochester,” he said. “What was funny is that without the internet we’d never have found it.” While there might be some nostalgia about many of these older objects for grandparents, the kids might enjoy playing with the up to 20 interactive exhibits. “Some you push a button, or you use a telegraph to tap keys,” Hunter said. Another shows how an audio bandwidth can alter the voice by filtering it to compress data in the use of cellphones. “The voice doesn’t sound the same over the lines because the device clips out the higher and lower frequencies,” he said. And even today there are more devices in the works with the fold-able cellphone and screen holographics, testament to man’s desire to find ways to send information faster and better, Hunter said. “Let’s Connect! But, like all of us, those patients are free to choose what they eat. The sugar tax has not stopped people eating junk food, though the effects are well known and cheaper, healthy food is available. Likewise walking, cycling and jogging are free, but despite many articles explaining why movement is good for you many choose not to exercise. It’s too easy to blame government for this. Obesity is something the majority of us can avoid if we make the decisions to do so — and those choices are ours to make. Suzanne Stringer, Aberfeldy, Perthshire Terrible battle As someone who

Quarterback Graham Mertz capped off a 10-play, 72-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to finally put a dent in the scoreboard. It was a very “Wisconsin” drive in which the offensive line generated plenty of room for Braelon Allen and provided enough protection for Mertz downfield. The defense still needs to get a stop or five, but at least Paul Chryst’s crew has a little momentum.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Williams in again 13:33 Q2: No. 3 Ohio State 28, Wisconsin 0 This is getting out of hand in a hurry. Miyan Williams punched it in from three yards out to make it a 28-0 game. That’s four touchdowns in four straight possessions for the Buckeyes, and Williams’ second of the night. This offense is a machine and, if Jim Knowles really has figured things out on defense, this could be the best Buckeyes team in a long time. Pinned Pinned Pinned First quarter stats Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Cade Stover having a DAY 3:55 Q1: No. 3 Ohio State 21, Wisconsin 0 Buckeyes tight end Cade Stover caught his second touchdown of the game late in the first quarter. CJ Stroud faked a handoff and bootlegged out to the right. He had a run-pass option and, when both Wisconsin defenders crashed, he tossed it over the top to Stover who was running free. Stover has four catches for 51 yards in the first quarter and has become another big weapon in what is one of the most dangerous offenses in the country. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Mertz makes a mistake 8:54 Q1: No. 3 Ohio State 14, Wisconsin 0 Teams can’t make mistakes against the Buckeyes, and Wisconsin QB Graham Mertz made a bad one on Wisconsin’s first drive. He threw WAY behind his receiver and was picked off by safety Tanner McCalister who brought it back to the Wisconsin 16-yard line. CJ Stroud hit Cade Stover on a designed rollout throwback across the field for a 13-yard score two plays later.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Stroud coming out HOT 12:13 Q1: No. 3 Ohio State 7, Wisconsin 0 Ohio State quarterback CJ Stroud came out on fire against the Badgers. He completed all three of his passes for 73 yards on the opening drive, with all three receivers finding open space on the six-play drive. Miyan Williams scored from one yard out to cash it in. That’s the last thing that Wisconsin needed to see. If Ohio State makes this a shootout, Wisconsin won’t be able to keep up. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned See More

(DimX), a Metaverse company developing a platform that radically simplifies the creation of immersive experiences, is hosting the Metaverse Creators Summit, a virtual learning event focused on next generation immersive storytelling to be held on November 16th, 2022. Registration is open at https://mcsummit.dev “Consider this event to be the Metaverse 101 for all who want to take part in the economic opportunities that this next evolution of the internet will provide,” said Scott Robertson, DimX CEO. “And, storytelling will be at the center of every great immersive experience. There will be something for everyone. For advanced developers, we will have a session on Unity’s Data-Oriented Technology Stack, a key enabling technology for complex Metaverse experiences, that lets your code run faster on multicore processors without the typical heavy programming headaches.” The virtual event includes two keynotes, eight lightning talks, two networking sessions, and a follow-on hackathon a few weeks later. Perhaps most valuable, facilitated networking will be organized in two formats: 1) Speed networking with quick introductions 2) Round table introductions, and a facilitated discussion about Ball’s keynote talk. Headlining the event is keynote speaker, Matthew Ball, author of The Metaverse: And How it Will Revolutionize Everything. About Ball’s work, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Fortnite-maker Epic Games, said: “Matthew Ball’s essays have defined, analyzed, and inspired the Metaverse for years. His book is an approachable and essential guide to the strategic, technical, and philosophical foundations of this new medium.” Respected as one of the best Metaverse thought leaders, Ball has delivered an exceptional overview of the history of the internet leading to the present situation. In part 3 of his book, Ball discusses the winners and losers, the business opportunities and the personal value we might realize as participants in the next evolution of the Internet. One thing appears clear. Immersive and engaging experiences will permeate people’s lives as the physical world is augmented with smart technology. Lives will improve if first-world learning experiences can be made available ubiquitously. The first 100 registrants at the Metaverse Creators Summit will receive a signed copy of Matthew Ball’s book. IOS 16 Review: Customization Unlocked Ars Technica
IOS 16 Review: Customization Unlocked Ars Technica
IOS 16 Review: Customization Unlocked – Ars Technica https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ios-16-review-customization-unlocked-ars-technica/ Operating systems — The lock screen gets a major overhaul. Samuel Axon – Sep 24, 2022 5:28 pm UTC Enlarge / The (customized) lock screen in iOS 16. Samuel Axon For the past couple of years, Apple’s annual iOS updates have laser focused on one feature for an overhaul while making smaller tweaks to everything else. Last year, Focus was the, well, focus. The year before that, it was the home screen. This time it’s the lock screen. You can now change fonts, add widgets, customize the information displayed, and pick from a wider variety of wallpaper. Apple has also more deeply integrated the lock screen with the Focus modes that were fleshed out in iOS 15. And it has laid the groundwork for something more than just notifications that third-party apps can show you before you unlock your phone. Given the increasingly iterative nature of iOS releases today—with many key features not arriving until months after the initial ship date of a new, whole-numbered version—we’re moving to leaner initial iOS reviews, with updates to come in additional articles over time. So today we’re going to look at the main new feature of iOS 16, but we’ll touch on a couple of other key features and changes, too. The lock screen While iOS 16 touches most aspects of using the iPhone in a variety of small ways, it is very much “the lock screen update.” That makes sense: Apple makes a lot of noise about shipping features that integrate hardware and software, and the iPhone 14 Pro’s new always-on display drives this emphasis on the lock screen. But there’s plenty here for users of other iPhone models that lack that always-on feature. Following up last year’s emphasis on Focus modes, and the previous year’s on home screen customization, this is the most significant move Apple has made on the customization front with the iPhone in, well, pretty much ever. I know what you’re going to say: aren’t these all features that have been part of Android for basically an eternity now? Yep, you’re right—mostly. In typical Apple fashion, there are some flourishes here that Android doesn’t touch, but as for functionality, this is mostly yesterday’s news for Android diehards. But what was already a win for Android users is largely a win for iOS users, too. It’s easy to see the influence of the Apple Watch on this update—the new widgets behave like complications, and the new lock screen acts like a Watch face. That sentence right there tells you just about everything you need to know about the new lock screen. Picture the Apple Watch and all the customizations, features, and limitations the Watch faces offer. Now make all that phone-sized. There you go, that’s the new iOS lock screen. This is the picker you get when you long-press on your lock screen. Samuel Axon You can swipe up to delete existing lock screens. To start playing with these customizations, you just long-press your finger on the lock screen. This brings you to an interface with horizontally scrolling cards, each one representing one of your custom screens. At the bottom, there are three important buttons. You can tap “Focus” to change the Focus mode that turns on when this lock screen is active. You can tap “customize” to change your widgets, fonts, wallpapers, and more. And there’s a “+” button to add a new custom lock screen to the row of cards. It starts with wallpapers When you hit the + button, a panel pops up to offer you a variety of wallpaper possibilities. These options fall into a few buckets. There are color gradient wallpapers, where you pick a general color theme and define some attributes of a simple gradient. (It looks nicer than it sounds, actually.) There are collections, which are a bit like Apple’s previous approach to iPhone wallpapers: premade patterns in a few different color options. You can also make a wallpaper out of emojis on a grid or in a pattern across the screen, and you can even pick which emojis to display. You can choose up to six emojis to include in the wallpaper, using Apple’s standard emoji-picking interface. This is the wallpaper picker panel you get when you start creating a new lock screen. Samuel Axon This is one of the premade wallpapers from Apple’s “collections”—the same sort of options Apple provided in prior iOS versions. Samuel Axon Another Apple pre-made choice. Samuel Axon Gradient wallpapers look surprisingly good, and are highly customizable. Samuel Axon Here’s a Chaotic Evil implementation of the emoji wallpaper. You can make Lawful Good ones, too. Or at least True Neutral. Samuel Axon My personal favorite bucket for wallpapers is the “Weather & Astronomy” category. These provide little in the way of customization, but they’re quite snazzy. The obvious one here changes the wallpaper visuals to match the live weather conditions in your area—and said visuals look like the ones that already paint the Weather app. There are also dynamic wallpapers for the Earth, moon, and solar system. The solar system one shows the actual current relative locations of the planets as they orbit the sun, while the Earth one shows your location on a globe with a green dot, amidst live-updating cloud cover that reflects conditions around the globe. The moon and Earth ones animate to different angles as you move from the always-on display to an active lock screen and then swipe for the home screen. It’s a fun effect, and the moon wallpaper in particular looks amazing on OLED iPhone screens. One variation of the Earth wallpaper. Samuel Axon This is the solar system one. Samuel Axon And this is the moon, which looks great on an OLED screen. Samuel Axon The live weather lock screen wallpaper. Samuel Axon But as neat as those are, I imagine most people will choose to go with the wallpapers that use photos from your library in the Photos app. Tapping “Photos” gives you a choice between individual photos on your phone. Using machine learning, the iPhone analyzes all the photos in your library so you can be presented with “Featured” suggestions, which I found to be mostly on the money. There are even subcategories for these featured suggestions, including people, pets, nature, and cities. And of course, you can browse your entire photo library and pick any image you’d like. There’s also “Photo Shuffle,” which is “a dynamic set of photos that shuffle as you use your iPhone throughout the day,” according to the tooltip. You can set the shuffle frequency to change on tap, on lock, hourly, or daily. Once again, it presents you with featured photos, and it lets you pick which categories to include—but you can still manually select each photo from your library. This is the manual photo wallpaper picker, with recommendations and categories. Samuel Axon You can customize photo shuffle by category, or go manually. Photo cutout on the lock screen is a neat feature. Samuel Axon This is as good a place as any to note that for photo wallpapers, Apple uses some neat AI tricks to cut out major objects in the image, like faces or buildings, and allows them to overlay bits of the time indicator, creating a neat effect. It’s shocking how well this works, actually. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work when you add widgets below the time. Except for that limitation, you can toggle this on and off at will. Once you’ve picked your wallpaper, you’re taken to the full lock screen customization view. Page: 1 2 3 4 Next →

Eden Prairie-Based Crypto Company Files For Bankruptcy – Bring Me The News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/eden-prairie-based-crypto-company-files-for-bankruptcy-bring-me-the-news/ Eden Prairie-based Compute North, which operates crypto-mining centers, has filed for bankruptcy. The company filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy in Texas Thursday, Bloomberg reports. It cited the increasing cost of electricity and the lag time between building the centers and revenue generation. Compute North owed as much as $500 to more than 200 creditors, according to Yahoo! Finance. In addition to the bankruptcy filing, the company’s CEO Dave Perrill also stepped down. Along with its Eden Prairie headquarters, Compute North also operates facilities in Texas, Nebraska and South Dakota. In a filing, Compute North Chief Financial Officer Harold Coulby said the company had taken out up to $300 million from one lender to finance its Texas and Nebraska projects, according to CoinDesk. “Facing the threat of ongoing degradation to the value of its business, including the potential termination of contracts that Compute North may be able to assign in a sale transaction, Compute North had no choice but to commence these Chapter 11 Cases in order to preserve and maximize the value of its assets,” he wrote. Bitcoin, the most widely used cryptocurrency, has also become increasingly difficult to mine, CoinDesk reported earlier this month. The cryptocurrency’s mining difficulty recently reached an all-time high.

The Last Of Us HBO Show Trailer Teased By Creators – ComicBook.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-last-of-us-hbo-show-trailer-teased-by-creators-comicbook-com/ The first full trailer for HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us may be released very, very soon. The Last of Us is one of the most acclaimed video games of all-time, receiving praise for its gripping and emotional story and complex characters. It is a game many point to when talking about the potential for storytelling in video games and helped seemingly give us a lot more cinematic, story-driven games. As a result of its success, Sony has been trying to figure out a way to adapt it for live action for quite some time. At one point, Sam Raimi was attached to direct a big-screen version of the game, but it eventually became an HBO TV series with Pedro Pascal as Joel Miller. We got out first glimpse at the HBO adaptation about a month ago, but fans have been waiting for a proper full trailer. It seems that it may finally be happening very soon. Over on Twitter, The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann noted that there are just two days until The Last of Us day (September 26th) and teased some news for fans. Craig Mazin, co-creator and writer of the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us, responded to Druckmann with a gif of Ellie. The two then exchanged gifs from Mazin’s other show, Chernobyl, and The Last of Us. Naturally, this has led many to expect a proper trailer for the show on Monday, though nothing has been confirmed. The series wrapped filming over the summer and is expected to release sometime in early 2023, so a trailer does make sense right about now. https://t.co/c8iwml0mfs pic.twitter.com/nFJZxzYtYl — Craig Mazin (@clmazin) September 24, 2022 For those that don’t know, The Last of Us day is basically an official fan celebration for the game. September 26th is the day of the virus outbreak in the world of the games. The day used to be called Outbreak Day, but was changed after the COVID-19 pandemic happened. The day is usually filled with merch and other stuff for fans, but it seems like we could get something big this year. 0comments Are you excited for The Last of Us on HBO?
