WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden will announce on Friday nearly $1.5 billion to fund access to medications for opioid overdoses, sanctions against traffickers, and increased funding for law enforcement, the White House said.
The Biden administration is keen to show it is taking action on a worsening nationwide opioid crisis, which according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data fueled more than 107,000 drug overdose deaths in 2021, a nearly 15% increase from the previous year.
“Our nation is facing 108,000 overdose deaths in just 12 months. That’s one life lost every five minutes around the clock,” said Dr. Rahul Gupta, director of National Drug Control Policy at the White House.

“The Biden-Harris administration is announcing several key investments and actions to reduce overdose deaths, ensure public health and law enforcement officials on the front lines have the resources they need, support people in recovery, and finally beat this epidemic,” Gupta told reporters on a press call.
Biden will announce nearly $1.5 billion in grants from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to states, tribal lands and territories, said Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, assistant secretary for mental health and substance use.

The funds will go toward treating substance-use disorders and removing barriers to key tools like naloxone, a medication that can reverse opioid overdoses, Delphin-Rittmon said.
The grants will also fund recovery support services, overdose education efforts, peer support specialists in emergency departments, and care for stimulant use and misuse disorders including cocaine and methamphetamine, she added.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration will release new guidance to ease restrictions on naloxone, said Gupta.
Currently, there are legal barriers limiting access to naloxone in some states, and in others it is not always available to those most at risk of an overdose because patients are more likely to receive a prescription if they had a prior diagnosis of opioid misuse or dependence along with an overdose than if they have had those diagnoses without an overdose.
Biden is also announcing an additional $12 million in funding for law enforcement in areas suffering the worst of drug trafficking, on top of $275 million announced in April, and sanctions on individuals and groups involved with drug cartels.

NORTHRIDGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Water conservation is a focus across California, but is there a way to keep large fields of grass green when water restrictions are leaving homeowners with dying grass?
Elaine Sibert, the CEO of Rain Systems, believes it’s possible and could make a huge difference for all of us.
“The cumulative savings with all of these different large turf areas would make an astronomical change in how much water is being used,” she said.
Rain Systems is a local company providing customers like Cal State Northridge with a 50-70% reduction in water needs for the spaces treated with their patented technology. Turf areas that remain green through our harsh summer.
Austin Eriksson, the director of Energy and Sustainability at CSUN, has seen the savings and the effectiveness of Rain Systems since 2015.
“It’s pretty green. It looks really good and if you were to go around campus and look at the locations that we have installed this at, you’d notice that they’re greener than the other locations and that’s simply because the water’s being held at the roots,” Ericksson said.
That is done through the use of hydrogels — polymers that have been around for nearly 50 years that can hold large amounts of water and are commonly used in the medical field and daily household products.
“I just became obsessed with using it in turf,” said James Sibert of Rain Systems.
Sibert’s “obsession” looks like a riding lawn mower, but uses 3-4,000 pounds of water pressure to make a tiny hole of water into the ground, and at virtually the same instant, blows a polymer into that same hole.
“Once they’re in the ground and they’re hydrated, they become hydrogels,” explains Elaine Sibert.
The polymer can hold up to 200 times its weight in water, is 100% biodegradable and can last for 3-5 years, allowing for water to be slowly absorbed at the turf’s roots, instead of being lost to evaporation or sinking too far below the surface.
“Every cemetery in the world should use this. Every football field in the world should use this. Every park in the world should use this. And most homeowners should use this,” James added.
CSUN is removing 900,000 square feet of grass to be replaced with drought resistant landscaping in the effort to be more water-wise. But a college campus is similar to other large spaces that needs some grass, and Rain Systems is offering a way to conserve while keeping those spaces beautiful.
“This allows us to come some of our grass green, especially in extreme drought conditions like we’re in right now… the hydrogels along with a slew of other strategies have helped us drop our water consumption 31% less water today than we were in 2019,” said Eriksson.
“Drought is an issue not only here in California, but all over the world. And different places are looking for solutions. We feel like we are, in some ways, just getting started,” Elaine added.

Consider These Black Heritage Tours For Your Next Vacation – TheTravel https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/consider-these-black-heritage-tours-for-your-next-vacation-thetravel/
One of the many beautiful things about slow travel is the opportunity to enjoy and learn about different cultures in their absolute authenticity, and that’s what Intrepid’s culturally enriching experiences in the USA are offering.
From learning Cajun cuisine from New Orleans’ only female-owned African American cooking school to enjoying a Native American river-to-table lunch in Warm Springs, Intrepid’s new experiences amplify and celebrate Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) perspectives in the United States.
Each new activity listed here has been made possible and successful by collaborations and partnerships with several BIPOC groups and representatives, such as the National Blacks in Travel & Tourism Collaborative and representatives from the Crow Nation and the Lakota tribes.
Why It Is Essential To Go On These Tours
General Manager of Purpose at Intrepid Travel, Sara King, defines regenerative travel as educating travelers on why it’s crucial to not just take from but also invest in the communities they visit. According to King, these tours aim to give people “deep information about Black history and culture” through firsthand experience.
“Travelers vote with their wallets every day they are on a trip, so it is best to ensure they stay in locally owned properties and support locally owned businesses, which Intrepid takes seriously. Keeping money in a community and supporting job creation and social and environmentally conscious businesses must become the norm,” King adds.
Stephanie Jones, Founder & CEO of the Cultural Heritage Economic Alliance, Inc. (CHEA), Founder of Black Cultural Heritage Tours, and the National Blacks in Travel & Tourism Collaborative, shed more insight on the significance of these tours for visitors.
“Our Black cultural heritage itineraries give transforming experiences for travelers wishing to get a fuller narrative about the Black experience, including the Civil Rights Movement,” Jones added.
“Travelers experience both historical and contemporary cultural experiences celebrating Black history, exploring historic places and becoming immersed in the rich Black culture through food, music, art, dance and meeting and hearing stories told by locals.”
Intrepid Travel has just introduced a new tour in Southeast Asia that focuses on the rich cultural heritage of West and Central Africa.
Within these tours are several new BIPOC-centric activities that enable visitors to gain a more diverse and inclusive perspective of America. The eight unique excursions offered by Intrepid Travel in 2022 include the following:

Additionally, travelers will witness a soul-stirring performance in Beaufort, where music and dance share the experience of enslaved Africans brought to South Carolina, indulge in a seafood boil with the locals, and attend Sunday worship at one of Savannah’s Black churches. This tour is one of the most impacting and culturally significant itineraries Intrepid has included in its new range of U.S. tours.

In this Q&A, you’ll hear from Dan Zavorotny, co-founder and COO of NutriSense, a platform using continuous glucose monitors and nutritional counseling to achieve better health outcomes. Dan shares the impact of combining real-time biometrics with actionable insights for chronic disease management and overall wellness.
Can you tell us about what you’re working on at NutriSense?
Dan Zavorotny: Our mission at NutriSense is to help anyone discover and reach their health potential. We utilize continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology, advanced analytics inside of our mobile app, and 1:1 dietitian coaching to offer insight into health that spans four pillars: nutrition, exercise, stress, and sleep.
By monitoring glucose in real-time, we provide personalized and real-time feedback on wellness habits and what one needs to do to improve their overall health.
What sets NutriSense apart from other solutions is our emphasis on the importance of uniting the efficiency and usability of our technology with the expertise of credentialed nutrition professionals. We believe that push notifications alone don’t produce real behavioral change — but having guidance from a health expert in combination with real-time data can.
That’s why it was imperative for us to ensure the counsel users receive on the platform comes from a real person with real experience in the field. We keep a laser focus on the member experience, ensuring that we build a solution that works, not a brand that looks flashy. We design our services to produce better wellness outcomes for our members, thus improving adherence.
How did you come up with the idea? What key insight led you to pursue this opportunity?
DZ: In my previous role in healthcare consulting, my job was to maximize profitability for hospitals and insurance companies. During my career, I noticed two troubling trends: The US spends more money on healthcare every year per capita, and we as a country are getting sicker every year due to preventable diseases (type II diabetes, heart disease, etc.) that are caused by poor lifestyle decisions.
I was on a trip to San Francisco for a healthcare conference and a childhood friend (now co-founder Alex Skryl) invited me out for dinner. He was wearing a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) in an effort to improve his metabolic health through more positive nutrition habits. While glucose monitoring wasn’t new to me, our conversation finally allowed me to see the opportunity to create immense value for a large segment of the US population.
Together, we had engineering prowess and business acumen and needed only to find someone to own the health expertise. Kara Collier, a registered dietitian nutritionist and now our VP of Health, was the perfect person to join our founding team.
How did you turn your idea into a company?
DZ: At the early stages, there are only two goals for a company: to build and to sell. Alex’s background is engineering, so he built, and with my expertise, selling fell under my purview.
The irony is I didn’t know how to sell. My background was exclusively in finance, so my skill set was seemingly not relevant. The first thing I did was conduct an online search for “how to get customers,” which, as you can imagine, resulted in hundreds of articles.
I dove in and started learning how to drive website traffic. Influencer marketing seemed like the fastest way to go on a low budget, and that turned out to be a great decision, as we gained 500 customers before we spent any money on paid media. To describe this early experience, I would use the word “GRIT.”
How big can this get? What’s the addressable market and how do you go about capturing it?
DZ: The addressable market for the type of personalized support we offer is widespread. We want to help anyone discover and reach their health potential, and to get there, we have to acknowledge that there are already 89M Americans who are prediabetic and 34M who have type II diabetes.
Further, the current global wellness market is estimated at more than $1.5T, according to McKinsey, with annual growth of 5–10% thanks to a rise in both consumer interest and purchasing power in a post-COVID-19 world.
This tells us there is a clear need for solutions to help people take control of their health, and NutriSense can give them a resource to do so.
Through continuous glucose monitoring, leveraging data-driven analytics, and offering access to credentialed nutrition professionals, we’re able to help people understand how their body functions in relation to food, stress, sleep, and exercise.
Our members want to learn about their bodies, both generally and in real time, so they can make better health choices. We solve the interrelated problems of capturing data from our bodies and interpreting what it means.
Who is the core customer? How are you acquiring customers? And how will you grow the customer base?
DZ: Our core customer is anyone looking to take control of their health and reach new lifestyle goals.
Currently, our members are a wide-ranging group of men and women that tend to be aged 30 and up. This includes people who realize they are missing information about how their body responds to changes in lifestyle decisions and/or are willing to invest in a tool that offers them a comprehensive view of their health.
Many are interested in monitoring blood glucose, living a healthy lifestyle with diabetes, and/or learning more about how their lifestyle and behavior affect their health. We also have Olympic and professional athletes on the platform.
While continuous glucose monitoring can be beneficial to any lifestyle, our ideal customer is someone who is focused on their health and is a.) committed to better understanding their body’s response to changes in habits, and b.) willing to take action against those insights.
As a company, we are less focused on the starting point of our members and more focused on how we can be a partner to them through every stage of their health journey.
Looking at your road map, what are some of the milestones you’re targeting over the next 3-6 months?
DZ: Through 2022, our main priorities are growing our membership and evolving our platform to take a more holistic approach to health — beyond glucose monitoring. We’re looking to build a wider range of tools to address four key pillars of health, including tracking additional markers of health.
Our platform is most effective for people who are already interested in putting effort into managing their health, so we plan to continue educating people and inspiring others to become more invested in their health too.
To achieve this, we are planning to add more experts to the platform to help track and analyze members’ data, including those with unique specialties. As we add these professionals, we will be better equipped to address the full range of factors impacting health.
Additionally, we plan to add new devices such as noninvasive glucose monitoring, CGM devices that last for longer periods of time, and continuous tracking for other metabolites.
Anything else you’d like to share with readers?
DZ: We believe that everyone should be able to take control of their health. Studies have shown that glucose plays a huge role in a person’s overall well-being — even in healthy people, elevated blood glucose levels can impact physiological pathways related to aging, cardiovascular health, kidney function, and, of course, the risk of developing a metabolic disorder like diabetes.
With NutriSense, members can take steps related to exercise and nutrition to manage their health based on both the insights they gain from wearing a CGM and having access to guidance from NutriSense professionals. This personalized approach with 1:1 coaching really makes all of the difference, especially when it comes to something as unique and personal as one’s health journey.
As we remain committed to helping people better understand their bodies, we want to also continue to build out our teams and hire strong talent. With that in mind, we’re hiring! You can learn more and apply here.

Metaverse Startup TerraZero Seeks TSX-V Listing Through Reverse Takeover BetaKit Canadian Startup News
Metaverse Startup TerraZero Seeks TSX-V Listing Through Reverse Takeover – BetaKit – Canadian Startup News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/metaverse-startup-terrazero-seeks-tsx-v-listing-through-reverse-takeover-betakit-canadian-startup-news/
TerraZero is owned by the parent company of crypto trader Netcoins.
A portfolio company of Netcoins parent company Bigg Digital Assets is preparing to go public on the TSX-V through a reverse takeover.
TerraZero Technologies, a metaverse development group, has signed a letter of intent with Whatcom Capital II Corp. that would see TerraZero become publicly traded following a reverse takeover.
TerraZero wants to develop, acquire, and finance what it described as the metaverse’s “most promising companies, entrepreneurs, and developers.” The startup also said it owns digital real estate, and provides offices and services within the metaverse.
Bigg, which invests in crypto products and companies, owns 30 percent of TerraZero.
Whatcom is a capital pool company that completed its initial public offering (IPO) on the TSX-V in 2021, going public with gross proceeds of $755,000.
Founded in 2021, TerraZero has 28 employees and consultants, and claims its clients include CBC, Salesforce, and PwC, among others.
While metaverse companies aren’t common on the TSX-V, TerraZero would not be the first. At least a couple of firms trade in exchange-traded funds on the TSX-V, with investments in a number of markets, including some in the development of the metaverse.
TerraZero founder and CEO Dan Reitzik called the company well-capitalized and revenue-producing. “I see the metaverse as simply the next version of the internet as we know it today, but instead of a 2D environment, it is a 3D environment providing greater engagement between brands and consumers, and between people themselves,” Reitzik said.

“There will soon be significant consolidation and opportunities in the metaverse and Web 3 space, and TerraZero will be positioned to capitalize on these as needed,” he added.
Besides TerraZero, Bigg includes the Blockchain Intelligence Group, Netcoins, and Luxxfolio as portfolio companies. Blockchain Intelligence Group monitors risk from crypto transactions, while Luxxfolio operates an industrial-scale cryptocurrency mining facility in the United States.
Netcoins is a crypto trading platform registered as a restricted dealer in Canada with the British Columbia Securities Commission (BCSC). Netcoins experienced a security breach in April that allegedly allowed a customer to fraudulently withdraw an estimated $1.58 million CAD.
Bigg announced in early September that it would launch an American subsidiary, Netcoins USA, based in Wyoming. The US subsidiary is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2022 in four states: California, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Virginia. Netcoins plans to launch additional states in Q1 2023 pending approvals.
Other Canadian startups are eyeing the metaverse, although not with aspirations of listing publicly. Montréal-based software startup Lighthouse Labs plans to build what it describes as “the open metaverse navigation engine” for blockchain-based virtual worlds after securing $9.1 million in seed funding in May.
The biggest player in the metaverse, Meta, announced in March that it plans to hire up to 2,500 employees across Canada over the next five years as part of a new Canadian engineering hub. The company noted that the Toronto hub will play an important role in the creation of Meta’s metaverse. However, since that announcement, Meta said it would have to slow down the rate of hiring, and has been making layoffs.
And as the biggest player in the metaverse, Meta hasn’t been doing terrifically well. A story in Quartz noted: “Ever since Facebook became Meta, things have not looked up. As Facebook user growth stalls and ad revenue slows, the metaverse’s sluggish pickup with clunky hardware isn’t making up for it. Meta’s stock has halved from a year ago.”
Mark Binns, Bigg’s CEO, remarked: “Bigg invested in TerraZero as an early stage private company knowing that our support, coupled with their leadership and vision, could create a true leader in the emerging Web 3 and metaverse space.”

IOS 16 Changes How You Record And Send Audio Messages On Your IPhone — Here’s How It Works Now – Gadget Hacks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/ios-16-changes-how-you-record-and-send-audio-messages-on-your-iphone-heres-how-it-works-now-gadget-hacks/
To record an audio message in the Messages app on iOS 15, you would tap and hold the audio messages button in the text entry field of the conversation. Then, you could let go to preview it before sending it or swipe up to send it right away. That’s no longer the case on iOS 16 for iPhone.
The audio messages button in the text entry field was replaced by a new Dictation button on iOS 16, so if you tried using that to send an audio message, you wouldn’t get anywhere. If you do try to long-press Dictation’s microphone icon, iOS will point out that the audio message button moved to the app drawer. Even if your app drawer is hidden, iOS will unhide it to show you the new button.
Don’t Miss: Apple Just Improved Messaging on Your iPhone with 26 New Must-Try Features
The change also appears on iPadOS 16.1 for iPad, which is still in beta.
Using the Audio Messages App
When you open the new Audio Messages app in the app drawer, its interface will replace your keyboard. You can swipe up or double-tap the expand icon to show the timeline, then swipe down or double-tap the collapse icon to minimize the view. In either view, you can send an audio message in two ways.
Option 1: Tap to Record
Tap the microphone button to start recording.
Tap the stop button when done.
Tap the play button to preview the audio message before sending it, the X icon in the text entry field to discard the recording, or the send button in the text entry field to send the audio message.
Option 2: Long-Press to Record
Touch and hold the microphone button to start and continue recording. While holding it down, the mic button becomes a send button.
Release your finger over the send button when done to send the audio message right away, or slide your finger out until the send button becomes an X, and release to discard the recording.
Receiving Audio Messages
When it comes to receiving audio messages, nothing has changed. You can still tap play or raise your iPhone (see below) to listen to the audio message. The messages disappear after two minutes unless you tap “Keep” to save them, which appears to both sender and recipient. It’s also possible to turn off “Expire” in Messages’ settings to remove the two-minute limit.
Don’t Miss: Every iPhone User Should Know These Hidden Moves in Apple’s Messages App
To enable Raise to Listen, go to Settings – Messages, scroll down to the Audio Messages section, and toggle on “Raise to Listen.” After it’s on, you can bring your iPhone to your ear to listen to incoming messages. After you listen to them, Raise to Listen will change to Raise to Talk, so you can bring your iPhone to your mouth and start recording a reply.

The Brazilian Federal Police began raids on six undisclosed crypto exchanges on Thursday in an investigation into tax evasion and money laundering involving the use of cryptocurrencies.
As part of Operation Colossus executed in conjunction with the Brazilian tax authority, the Federal Police is carrying out 101 warrants issued by a criminal court in São Paulo, according to an official police report. They include two arrest warrants and 37 search and seizure warrants.
In addition, the police ordered the freezing of roughly $238 million in assets and securities held by those under investigation, and they also seized an undisclosed amount of virtual assets held by 28 exchanges under investigation.
The investigations stemmed from a report conducted by Brazil’s Financial Intelligence, which found suspicious bank activity linked to the trading of crypto assets. The alleged crimes occurred between 2017 and 2021, but according to the Brazilian police they are ongoing.

U.S. House GOP Outlines Agenda In Bid For Control In The Midterms Maryland Matters
U.S. House GOP Outlines Agenda In Bid For Control In The Midterms – Maryland Matters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-house-gop-outlines-agenda-in-bid-for-control-in-the-midterms-maryland-matters/

U.S. House Republicans gathered inside a warehouse in Southwestern Pennsylvania on Friday to outline the legislation they’d try to enact if voters give them back control of that chamber following the November midterm elections.
Speaking from an HVAC factory in Monongahela, about an hour south of Pittsburgh, House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said the first bill he’d bring to the floor if elected speaker would repeal part of a Democratic law that boosted funding for the Internal Revenue Service.
“On that very first day that we’re sworn in, you’ll see that it all changes, because on our very first bill we’re going to repeal 87,000 IRS agents,” McCarthy said, using a number Democrats have repeatedly said isn’t an accurate representation of what the funding boost would do. “Our job is to work for you, not go after you.”
None of the proposals that were sketched out came with a price tag showing how much a Republican House would change spending compared to current levels. Republicans also said they’d “protect the lives of unborn children and their mothers” but did not detail exactly what nationwide abortion restrictions they’d bring to the floor, or how they’d address maternal mortality rates.
Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise, who would likely move from whip to majority leader if his party regains control, said Republicans would put forward bills to reduce inflation and bring down energy costs.
“We wanted to lay out a bold, conservative vision to show the country there’s hope again,” Scalise said. “The commitment to America is going to show the country, if you give us a Republican majority in the House, these are the things we will do.”
Democrats broadly panned the Republicans’ rollout of their plan.
House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Maryland Democrat, said during a speech in Pittsburgh that the House GOP’s “new platform, which isn’t new at all, is long on slogans and short on details.”
Campaigns underway
Democrats narrowly hold the House, maintaining 221 seats to Republicans’ 212 members, with two vacancies.
Both parties are pouring millions of dollars into swing districts throughout the country, hoping to convince voters that their vision for the country’s future is the best path forward following a tumultuous few years that included a pandemic, a Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection by Donald Trump supporters hoping to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, and record inflation.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade this summer, ending half a century of abortion as a constitutionally protected right, is also playing out on the campaign trail.
Democrats have repeatedly urged voters to reject GOP abortion policies by keeping them in control of both chambers of Congress, while Republicans have tried to sidestep the issue in some more contentious races.
Pennsylvania Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate John Fetterman has been highlighting Republican candidate Mehmet Oz’s relative silence on a new bill from South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham (R) that would cap most abortions at 15 weeks nationwide.
“Oz is a fraud who does not even have the guts to give a yes or no answer when it comes to how we would vote on the abortion ban bill that has been introduced in the U.S. Senate,” Fetterman said in a statement Friday. “He’s dodging this very real question and thinks Pennsylvanians won’t notice.”
That close race in the Keystone State and others likely drew both the Republicans and Hoyer to its southwest corner on Friday.
Four planks
The Republicans’ Commitment to America has four broad planks. Three focus on economic issues; national security and crime; and government transparency. The fourth includes health care, technology and education policy.
The economic category asserts that a Republican-held U.S. House would reduce government spending, though it declines to say where lawmakers would cut federal funding; boost domestic energy production; and expand U.S. manufacturing.
To address national security issues, the House GOP plans to “fully fund effective border enforcement strategies,” support 200,000 additional police officers through bonuses and “invest in an efficient, effective military.”
House Republicans say if voters give them back control of that chamber, they’d create a “future that’s built on freedom,” in part by preventing transgender women from competing in women’s sports and lowering health care prices by boosting competition.
The proposal also calls for the GOP to “save and strengthen” Social Security and Medicare, though it doesn’t provide any details about how they’d change the longstanding popular social programs that primarily serve the elderly.
Those two entitlement programs along with Medicaid are categorized as mandatory government spending, meaning they run mostly on autopilot and represent the fastest growing section of federal spending.
Abortion bills
Under the section on government accountability, Republicans tackle abortion without specifics, though during this session of Congress, House Republicans have introduced more than 100 bills addressing abortion in some way.
One bill, from Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Mike Kelly, would bar abortions after a fetal heartbeat is detected, typically about six weeks into a pregnancy and sometimes before a woman knows she’s pregnant.
The measure, which has 123 co-sponsors, has an exemption for abortions that are essential to save the life of the pregnant patient, but not for rape or incest.
Legislation from West Virginia Rep. Alex Mooney, backed by 166 co-sponsors, would “implement equal protection for the right to life” at the moment of fertilization.
The legislation doesn’t detail if or when women would be able to access abortions, including in cases of ectopic pregnancies, which are never viable, or miscarriages that sometime require the same medications or procedures as elective abortions.
A 20-week abortion ban, sponsored by New Jersey Rep. Christopher Smith, has the backing of 173 House Republicans. The proposal includes exceptions after 20 weeks of pregnancy if it’s the result of rape or incest, but only if the patient “has obtained counseling for the rape” or “has obtained medical treatment for the rape or an injury related to the rape.”
A child whose pregnancy is the result of rape or incest would be allowed an abortion after 20 weeks if the minor has reported the crime to a “government agency legally authorized to act on reports of child abuse”, or law enforcement, under Smith’s legislation.
Abortions after 20 weeks would also be legal if the pregnancy would endanger the patient’s life because of a physical illness or injury, but not “psychological or emotional conditions.”
Investigations promised
U.S. House Republicans at the rollout celebration Friday didn’t mention their abortion proposals, but did detail many other aspects of their plan for a GOP majority, including investigations.
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan pledged that various committees would hold investigations into the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan, the origins of COVID-19 and various actions by the U.S. Department of Justice.
“We are committed to doing the investigations that need to be done,” Jordan said. “After all, that is part of our constitutional duty, to do the oversight and make sure you, the country, we, the people, have the facts and the truth.”
On education policy, Louisiana Rep. Julia Letlow said Republicans would bring up her so-called Parents Bill of Rights, which would impose new national regulations on state and local education bodies.
The legislation would require local education agencies to post the curriculum for elementary and secondary schools on a public website, or widely disseminate it to the community if they don’t have a website.
Local education agencies would need to create annual report cards detailing all revenues and expenditures for the entire school system as well as each school.
“This is common sense legislation. It’s just about providing transparency for us,” Letlow said. “And so you, as a parent, should always—the first and foremost thing, be able to view your child’s curriculum.”
“And then secondly, if you don’t like what you find, if you don’t like what you see, you should be able to go to your school board and lawfully tell them this needs to change. You should have that right as a parent,” she added.
Parents would also be granted the right to know if states change their academic standards, to meet at least twice a year with their child’s teacher, to review the books and reading material in the school library, and to receive information about violence within the school.
Democrats push back
Hoyer, in Pittsburgh, said there were few specifics from Republicans “because the true details of Republicans’ agenda are too frightening for most American voters. Details matter, however.”
Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a statement that Republicans’ policy goals threaten “to criminalize women’s health care, slash seniors’ Medicare and raise prescription drug prices, and attack our free and fair elections.”
“These appalling proposals have long been advanced by right-wing politicians and are widely supported by the dark money special interests who call the shots in the GOP,” the California Democrat said.
“But this extreme MAGA agenda is way out of step with Americans’ priorities, who align with Democrats’ vision of putting People Over Politics: with lower costs, better-paying jobs and safer communities.”
President Biden, speaking at a Democratic National Committee event at the National Education Association headquarters in Washington, D.C., rebuked House Republicans’ plans, saying it was “a thin series of policy goals, with little or no detail.”
New Treatment Uses Regenerative Technology To Combat Low Back Pain Joplin Globe
New Treatment Uses Regenerative Technology To Combat Low Back Pain – Joplin Globe https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/new-treatment-uses-regenerative-technology-to-combat-low-back-pain-joplin-globe/
A system now offered by Freeman Health System provides a new approach to relieving lower back pain for those who haven’t been helped by other back pain procedures or have difficulty exercising.
The pain relief from ReActiv8 is accomplished by regrowing the lower back’s major stabilizing muscles primarily through the use of two little wires and a tiny battery pack, said Dr. Rebecca Sanders, a pain management physician for Freeman.
“People who have lower back pain who’ve had physical therapy, maybe they’ve tried medications and they’ve tried injections, and yet they continually have this cycle of severe low back pain — this procedure can help,” she said.
Lower back pain causes more disability around the world than any other condition, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
According to a recent survey, more than 72.3 million U.S. adults suffer from chronic low back pain. That’s a greater number of people suffering debilitating impact on quality of life than those who suffer from arthritis, diabetes or even heart disease.
Most lower back pain can be treated through physical exercise, medication or anti-inflammatory injections, avoiding ReActiv8 altogether. For some people, however, lower back pain can be crippling despite the long-standing treatments. That’s when Sanders will conduct an examination to see if a person’s stabilizing back muscles are doing their job. She’ll also order a magnetic resonance image of the patient’s lower back.
“On a normal MRI, you’ll see a nice gray muscle that looks healthy,” she said. For those with debilitating back pain, “their muscle has turned white, which basically means it’s died off.”
For years, she said, “we saw these (white muscle images) and really didn’t even have a treatment for it, so we really didn’t treat it,” meaning they prescribed stopgap measures like exercises and pain medication and needle shots. “People with chronic pain just became less active, they didn’t walk as much, and they just dropped their activities and enjoyment,” she said.
To regrow the lower back muscles, “we put in this little electrode, right on the nerve, and we program it to where the patient turns it on 30 minutes in the morning and 30 minutes at night,” Sanders said.
“Let’s say someone has a bad episode of back pain, and so the brain tells this muscle that it has to protect itself and it’s got to stop working, so the signal stops from the brain. And then, without that signal, the muscle just dies off.”
So what they’re doing “is putting that signal back in there, and it regrows,” she said. “Isn’t that awesome?”
On the MRI, “you’ll see that white, saggy muscle — it’s just all turned to fat — and then after a while of being used, you can see a healthy muscle there.”
The process takes time, but “most patients will see pain relief in about three months.”
Even better, “studies have been done where they have followed people up to three years now, and the thing that’s exciting to me is we see people’s relief increasing each year,” she said. “This is one of the few (procedures) where the research has shown that after three years, people are doing better than they were even at a year or three months after the procedure.”
Sanders is the only physician in a 100-mile radius making ReActiv8 available to her patients, according to Freeman Health System officials.
“One of the big things that motivates me in my day-to-day practice is that I always see people that I don’t have good options for, so I’m always searching for what are the newer options, what are the treatments that can reach populations of people that traditionally I have not been able to successfully alleviate their pain.”
There is hope this muscle regenerative feature can be applied eventually to other portions of the body where aches and pains are common.
“I think definitely a big focus of medical research is regeneration; I think all of us, from doctors to patients … are no longer enamored with Band-Aid treatments. I know there’s a lot of efforts for regenerative treatments, and, while it may not be the exact same technology, it’s a similar thought process,” Sanders said.

Answers to 25 common COVID-19 vaccine questions
Vaccinations for COVID-19 began being administered in the U.S. on Dec. 14, 2020. The quick rollout came a little more than a year after the virus was first identified in November 2019. The impressive speed with which vaccines were developed has also left a lot of people with a lot of questions. The questions range from the practical—how will I get vaccinated?—to the scientific—how do these vaccines even work?

The tourism website Visit Iceland is offering a promotion just in time for the fall travel season. As part of a campaign called “OutHorse Your Email,” a number of Icelandic horses will help people “disconnect from work and let the horses of Iceland reply to your emails while [they] are on vacation,” according to the website.
Vacationers can choose from one of three horses to craft their out-of-office messages. This includes horses named Litla Stjarna Frá Hvítarholti, Hrímnir Frá Hvammi and Hekla Frá ÞOrkellshóli, with each horse coming with its own composition style to consider. For example, one of the horses “types fast, but might take a nap,” the site states, while another is “friendly” and “trained in corporate buzzwords.” The last horse is described as “assertive” and “efficient” with “shiny hair” to boot.
A pair of videos on the site shows how the process works. In the clips, the horses are shown walking along the enlarged “horse keyboard” with each shot featuring a healthy dose of Icelandic scenery such as block rock beaches, waterfalls, streams, snow-capped expanses, mountains and more.
It’s important to note that the draft emails shown resulting from the horses’ typing skills didn’t produce any comprehensible language at first glance. For example, a portion of one of the typed email replies show states, “wFwhxsqjnzgmsrqaaaa.” Another example reply states, “”’bdqtde.”

2022 Presidents Cup Scores, Results: Live Coverage, Standings, Golf Updates, Schedule For Day 2 On Friday – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/2022-presidents-cup-scores-results-live-coverage-standings-golf-updates-schedule-for-day-2-on-friday-cbs-sports/
The United States takes a commanding 4-1 lead into Day 2 of the 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Golf Club. The U.S. looked right at home in Charlotte, and the Americans appear primed to win their 12th Presidents Cup if all goes according to plan. Adding to their dominance in foursomes on Thursday, they now shift their attention to four-ball where the U.S. side has drawn square with the International team since 2007.
The Internationals squad is sending out Adam Scott first, once again, despite the eldest member of the away team struggling mightily alongside Hideki Matsuyama on Day 1. He will be paired with his fellow Australian Cameron Davis as the pair aims to take down the American duo of Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth. In total, five four-ball matches will be contested as Trevor Immelman’s squad attempts to claw its way back into contention.
Despite all the naysayers, falling behind by three points early in the competition is not insurmountable for an away team as showcased by the U.S. in 2019 at Royal Melbourne. In Australia, the U.S. lost the first session at the exact same 4-1 score only to raise the Presidents Cup by week’s end with a 16-14 victory. While the likelihood of the International team replicating this feat is faint, it remains a possibility heading into the second day of event.

Keep an eye on the internationals’ putting
The visiting team made just one putt outside 15 feet on Day 1 and just three holes into fourball, they have already matched that total. Sam Burns and Sebastian Munoz traded birdies on the par-4 third to remain tied. Up ahead, Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth take a 1 UP lead thanks to a Thomas birdie.

2B3D Aims To Reduce Veteran Suicide In The Metaverse With Virtual Reality Mental Health Therapies Forbes
2B3D Aims To Reduce Veteran Suicide In The Metaverse, With Virtual Reality Mental Health Therapies – Forbes https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/2b3d-aims-to-reduce-veteran-suicide-in-the-metaverse-with-virtual-reality-mental-health-therapies-forbes/
By Christos Makridis
Metaverse platform 2B3D announced the first-of-its-kind “virtual reality medical environment,” which delivers live, free mental health services to military veterans via the metaverse. Owned and operated by military veterans, 2B3D is deploying new treatment via technology that has the potential to vastly improve the physical and mental health of veterans over the internet.
Facts about veteran suicide and mental health
There is a bipartisan recognition that urgent responses are needed to reduce veteran suicide in America. “Veteran suicide is still too high, but we are making progress… there is still work to do so that one day we are speaking of veteran suicide in the past tense,” said U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy on September 20. After the Taliban takeover last summer, Cassidy led a bipartisan group of senators advocating outreach to veterans who served in Afghanistan to provide mental health resources in response to an uptick in veteran suicide hotline calls.
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, which has only intensified over the past two years following a surge of mental health declines during the lock downs across states. But the incidence of suicide falls more heavily on some groups over others, especially veterans. “Veterans bear a disproportionate but preventable burden… veteran suicide-related deaths are also increasing at a greater rate than that of the general U.S. population: from 2001 to 2019, the rate of suicide among veterans increased nearly 36% relative to an increase of 30% in the general population,” said Christopher Jones, acting director of Public Health Service at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in a congressional testimony in June.
(Courtesy of 2B3D)
Suicide can be particularly difficult problem to prevent because it is often the result of a cluster of underlying factors, which may include any combination of mental health and substance abuse issues, economic and housing insecurity, loneliness and high stress. Post-traumatic stress disorder also increases the risk of a suicide attempt. A Veterans Affairs study on 60,000 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans found 13.5% of deployed and undeployed vets screened positive for post-traumatic stress disorder. It’s hard to tell how that figure compares with stress disorder rates in veterans from earlier armed conflicts, since the disorder wasn’t given its name until 1980. Conditions with the same basic symptoms and risk factors were called “Post-Vietnam Syndrome” and caused up to 25% of Vietnam veterans to require interventions and treatment.
Much needed remedies
One of the Department of Veteran Affair’s main responses to curb veteran suicide attempts is through a crisis line, namely a suicide prevention hotline. A person does not need to be enrolled in benefits to call these lines, so family members are often encouraged to call on behalf of a loved one who may be having suicidal thoughts or behaviors. However, the efficacy of a phone call to help someone in a life or death situation depends on the competency and availability of the person on the line.
Research into the suicide hotline by the Veterans Affair’s inspector general revealed that as many as a third of calls placed go unanswered. Frontline workers tasked with the responsibility of answering these calls have historically spent little time on the phone or requested to leave before their shift was over, causing calls to be rerouted to back-up centers where operators lacked sufficient training to address veterans in crisis. Hearing a busy signal exacerbates suicidal thoughts and other mental health challenges among veterans on the receiving line.
Although the House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill in 2016 requiring the Veteran’s Affairs to ensure that all telephone calls, text messages and other communications received by the crisis line are answered in a timely manner by an appropriately qualified person, finding enough of those qualified individuals remains a challenge. For example, there has been a lot of staff turnover, especially over the past two years, and the quality of care has changed in facilities.
While lack of skilled staff is a major roadblock in ensuring that veterans receive help, another challenge is the delivery mechanism: care must be accessible when the veteran needs it, which might happen at any time of the day, and the therapies must be enjoyable. Support should be integrated into veterans’ daily lives.
(Courtesy of 2B3D)
One potential solution is the use of chatbots that are powered by artificial intelligence, as the National Artificial Intelligence Institute at the Department of Veterans Affairs is pioneering through their partnerships with industry in technology sprints. Building reliable chatbots is a useful goal for veterans who have simple queries, but it may not be a substitute for therapy.
“These are problems that require humans interfacing with humans… the sooner we leverage technology to create virtual reality environments that emulate the human-to-human aspect of treatment, then we can augment that with proven treatments that can maximize artificial intelligence or machine learning. Right now the cart is in front of the horse,” said retired Col. Mark Schonberg, chief of staff at 2B3D.
2B3D’s upcoming beta launch
The prototype beta version for 2B3D’s metaverse environment for veterans simulates a typical analog medical clinic or center. The individual’s avatar walks into the facility and is then evaluated by one of the counselors. Depending on that evaluation, a subject could be referred to group counseling, scheduled a follow-up appointment in the real world, execute individual therapy sessions, or in extreme cases referred to 911 services. However, the crisis support aspect is simply one option within the virtual reality medical environment. The environment can become a place where disadvantaged veterans can spend time together and interact with others experiencing similar challenges.
2B3D’s solution also addresses substance use and addiction. Treatment protocols are initiated for addiction prior to, or simultaneously with, virtual reality treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder for best results. During the beta testing of the virtual reality medical environment, 2B3D partnered with BioCorRx, which is addressing the challenges of addiction treatment using a holistic approach of cognitive behavior therapy and prescribed medication. Select resources from BioCorRx’s library of digital cognitive behavior therapy modules will be discoverable to visitors to the Phase I environment and can be engaged with at any time.
(Courtesy of 2B3D)
Over half of today’s veterans flock to gaming to alleviate service-induced stress since they provide an engaging, suspense-filled, and interactive experience. The non-clinical and autonomous setting also encourages veterans to open up and share in ways they may be unwilling to do within the confines of a hospital facility.
“We are working to take already proven post-traumatic stress disorder symptom-reducing programs and not only duplicate them in virtual reality, but also gamify them to make healing fun… the first test patient in our current trials showed results of improved rebalancing of the brain by 34% of the brain overall and over 60% in damaged low functioning centers,” said Robert Bell, president of 2B3D.
By borrowing from the immersive environments and collaborative team aspects of games that are popular with veterans, a virtual reality medical environment can deliver support in a way that veterans already enjoy and are comfortable with at any hour of the day, with only a headset and the internet.
Technological improvements, such as expanded 5G coverage and satellite-based solutions like Starlink, and the expansion of artificial intelligence provide additional momentum for virtual reality.
“Today, we have much more data available to us that we can use to understand and identify suicidal ideation, crisis, and risk for self-harm—at the VA [Department of Veterans Affairs], for example, we have genomic information from the Million Vet Program and transcript data from crisis lines like the VA Veterans Crisis Line… new technology like artificial intelligence will never replace the expertise, intuition, and judgment of care teams, but it offers the promise of perspective—an additional safety net that can sift through big data and help us to learn and flag those who could be in need and connect them quickly to the care they need.” said Gil Alterovitz, director of the National AI Institute at the Department of Veterans Affairs.
The adoption of metaverse experiences will also come with a wide array of blockchain based complementary assets. 2B3D is already planning to deploy non-fungible tokens to ensure identity management seamlessly across platforms in virtual reality medical environment so that users can avoid the hassle and risk of sharing personal and identifiable information whenever they consent to releasing it for therapies. Whether it is group therapy or listening to live music, the metaverse will unlock new possibilities for human flourishing among veterans and individuals at large.
Ahead of its platform launch, 2B3D will have an non-fungible token sale in early Q4, details forthcoming via its website and social channels. The proceeds will be used to fund further development of its metaverse environments; extra funds will support the Forge Forward Project.

I have a nice camera with a decent zoom, but my surf breaks are too far from shore to capture, and a waterproof housing is out of my price range. Divers, paddlers, swimmers, and anglers who want to document your adventures — take note: the AxisGO is a great solution.
The quality of phone cameras these days is incredible and after doing some research, I discovered that there are a number of phone housings designed to protect your phone during your aquatic adventures. After scouring the internet and reading about the different options, the AxisGO seemed like the best bet in an accessible price range, so I ordered a case for my iPhone 13.
I live in Hawaii and am in the ocean every single day. Although I’ll give any water sport a try, my staples are surfing, standup paddling, snorkeling, and free diving.
In short: When I was in the market for a housing, I was looking for something that wasn’t too bulky to swim with during surfing and diving. I also wanted it to have a decent depth rating, so I could free dive with it and take on shallow-water scuba diving adventures. The AxisGO ($179 and up) ticked all my boxes. Here’s how it performed.
AquaTech AxisGO Housing Review
How to Use a Waterproof Housing
Designed specifically for iPhones, the AxisGO 13 works for the iPhone 13 Pro Max, the iPhone 13 Pro, and the iPhone 13. (AxisGO currently has models for the iPhone XR, 11, 12, and 13, with the 14 coming soon.)
To use, you simply insert your phone into the case. (If you have the iPhone 13 Pro, you first snap in the cradle and then insert your phone.) The waterproof housing provides access to all three lenses on the iPhone 13, and the glass lens port is scratch-resistant.
The housing features a rear touch membrane, which allows you to have full touch-screen access so you can easily use your favorite apps, take selfies, and instantly send your photos to your contacts. The AxisGO 13 supports the latest features of the new iPhone including Macro, Cinematic Mode, and RAW capture.
On the bottom of the housing, there are mounting points to attach the Bluetooth pistol grip and on the front, there are threads to attach the dome, both of which are accessories on offer.
When purchasing the AxisGO, you have the option to simply purchase the housing, a kit, or individual accessories. Accessories on offer are the AxisGO Dome, the Bluetooth pistol grip, a dome cover, a cleaning and scratch removal kit, an action mounting kit, a protective case, and a sport leash. The dome enables you to take stunning over/under shots, and the Bluetooth pistol grip allows you to take photos at the click of a button.
Testing the Waters With the AxisGO
(Photo/Rebecca Parsons)
Taking your phone in the water feels very counterintuitive, but with the AxisGO housing, my phone feels well protected. I typically am not a big fan of all the setup it takes to figure out, but the AxisGO was straightforward. There are even videos on the website to guide you through all of the features.
I like that you simply put your phone in the case, snap it shut, and you’re ready to go. The snap makes it easy to know when your phone is fully secure.
The touch screen doesn’t work as well as if your phone weren’t in the case, but you are able to access everything. And compared to other options out there, it works well. Many lower-price waterproof cases won’t have this touch screen feature.
I’m not usually one to purchase add-ons, but the accessories offered by AxisGO definitely enhanced the experience. The Bluetooth pistol grip made it easy to hang onto the housing while swimming and diving, and it was awesome to be able to take photos by simply clicking the button.
And the dome allows you to take over/underwater shots, which for me turned out really cool. I also am a fan of the sport leash because the housing is not buoyant, so it’s important to make sure your phone and housing stay in hand.
Drawback
There are other waterproof housing options out there, ranging from over $350 to $500 that do have better depth rates of 30-40m, but they also come at a higher price. We do wish the AxisGO had a slightly better depth rate. But for now, the 10m depth rate, price, and performance of the housing make it a great option.
AxisGO Housing: Conclusion
Is the AxisGO Housing for you? With a price tag of $179-219 (less than 200 bucks if you have an iPhone XR, 11, or 12), this housing is hard to beat. That price is definitely lower than a GoPro or Olympus Tough Underwater camera, or other housing options, and is definitely lower than buying a new phone if you take yours out on the water without protection (and drop it).
Overall, I’m a big fan of this housing case! It has all the features I want. It offers fun, compatible accessories, and it’s easy to use. In future models, I hope they’ll improve the depth rating so users can take it on deeper dives. I’m excited to take the AxisGO out more frequently and continue to work on my underwater photography skills.

Metaverse technology has continued to be the rage among big-name brands that are now dolling out million-dollar paychecks to so-called “chief metaverse officers” to think up their metaverse adoption strategy.
According to a Bloomberg report, brands such as Disney, Proctor and Gamble (P&G), LVMH, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Spanish telecom carrier Telefonica SA, and wedding-registry retailer Crate & Barrel are among giants that have invested in a CMO of recent.
These firms, while each having modified job descriptions for their CMO, are all making the appointment with a view not to be left behind in the adoption of the emerging technology. Hamza Khan, the co-lead of metaverse efforts at management and consulting firm McKinsey & Co., said:
“Brands need to get closer to their customers, and the metaverse is a channel to do that. Compared to the early days of e-commerce, this time around brands are a lot more active, a lot earlier.”
McKinsey estimates that annual global spending related to the virtual world could reach as much as $5 trillion by 2030. Analysis by Gartner Inc. supports the position that the metaverse is the next big innovation with its forecast that one in four people will spend at least an hour a day in the metaverse within a few years.
Despite the “digital FOMO” trend, companies are still treading cautiously in their metaverse adoption as the sector is yet to prove itself to be a big earner. Bloomberg found that it is presently not uncommon to see newly named chief metaverse officers having additional responsibilities in order not to constrain company resources, although their paychecks still run into millions in some cases.
Companies already rolling out metaverse adoption strategies
Companies globally have not stopped at eyeing metaverse technology, some have already initiated moves to establish a significant presence in the virtual world. So far in 2022, the number of metaverse-related trademark filings made by companies has exceeded the total number of such filings made in the whole of 2021 as reported by Fortune.
Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook completed its rebrand to Meta this year and has pivoted its business focus to metaverse technology, albeit to a rocky start. Others like Walmart, Starbucks, and McDonald’s to mention a few have formed partnerships with metaverse-native companies to launch NFT collections or other metaverse-related initiatives.
All these strides the metaverse sector has been making have been despite a broader market price slump that has seen the crypto market capitalization drop below $1 trillion from its all-time high of close to $3 trillion.

Investigation, Litigation Result In Settlement Requiring InterArch Inc. Fiduciaries To Pay More Than $2M | U.S. Department Of Labor – US Department Of Labor https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/investigation-litigation-result-in-settlement-requiring-interarch-inc-fiduciaries-to-pay-more-than-2m-u-s-department-of-labor-us-department-of-labor/
MOORESTOWN, NJ – The fiduciaries of an international design firm in Moorestown must pay more than $2 million to restore mismanaged assets to the company’s retirement plan and in penalties after the U.S. Department of Labor agreed to a settlement following an investigation and litigation.
An investigation by the department’s Employee Benefits Security Administration determined that InterArch Inc. and Shirley and Vernon Hill, fiduciaries of the InterArch Inc. Profit-Sharing Plan, violated their fiduciary duties under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. EBSA determined that – from at least Aug. 30, 2016, through the plan’s June 30, 2020, termination – the fiduciaries invested the plan’s assets in an undiversified manner in two companies to which the fiduciaries had significant ties. The plan’s position in the stock of one of the companies reached almost 70 percent of the plan’s portfolio before it fell drastically in value, resulting in millions of dollars in losses to the plan.
“The law requires fiduciaries to discharge their duties solely in the interests of plan participants and beneficiaries in a prudent manner, and to diversify plan investments so the risk of large losses is minimized,” said Employee Benefits Security Administration Acting Regional Director Cristina O’Brien, in Philadelphia. “Fiduciaries are also prohibited from using plan assets for their own interests.”
Following EBSA’s investigation, the department’s Office of the Solicitor in New York filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey alleging that InterArch and the two individual fiduciaries engaged in self-dealing and violated their duties of loyalty and prudence and their duty to diversify, which caused the plan to enter into prohibited transactions.
The court entered a consent judgment and order on Sept. 23, 2022, requiring InterArch Inc. and fiduciaries Shirley and Vernon Hill to pay $1,836,853, to plan participants and $183,685, in penalties to resolve the allegations. The judgment also bars the Hills from serving as fiduciaries of any ERISA-covered employee benefit plans in the future.
“The Employee Benefits Security Administration is satisfied that this settlement will result in a substantial recovery to plan participants of the losses that the fiduciaries’ actions caused,” added O’Brien. “Plan fiduciaries must ensure they comply with ERISA’s provisions to protect workers’ retirement income. EBSA is committed to ensuring the integrity of employee benefit programs and holding those who violate the law accountable.”
“This case demonstrates the U.S. Department of Labor’s ongoing commitment to recovering losses caused by plan fiduciaries’ failure to comply with the law,” said Regional Solicitor of Labor Jeffrey S. Rogoff in New York.
EBSA’s Philadelphia Regional Office conducted the investigation. Trial Attorney Amanda Wilmsen of the department’s Office of the Solicitor in New York negotiated the settlement for the department.
InterArch Inc. and the Hills will additionally pay approximately $1.1 million to the retirement plan to resolve a separate but related private class action lawsuit filed by a former employee and those similarly situated in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey on May 27, 2020. A proposed settlement was reached in the private class action lawsuit, which alleged similar ERISA violations as the department’s complaint.
In total, between the department’s settlement and the private class action lawsuit settlement, more than $3 million will be restored to the retirement plan.
InterArch Inc. is an international design firm specializing in architecture, interiors, and branding. The InterArch Inc. Profit Sharing Plan is a defined contribution profit sharing plan that was originally made effective as of Nov. 1, 1976, and was terminated as of June 30, 2020. The plan was funded primarily by employer contributions.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Five companies will test aviation products, ranging from autonomous service vehicles to a service designed to improve baggage delivery, at the Gerald R. Ford International Airport as part of a program designed to spur innovation and entrepreneurship.
The companies are splitting a $145,500 state grant designed provided by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Ford airport, Southwest Airlines and Stantec GenerationV, according to a news release from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC).
The effort is part of a program at the airport’s Ford Launchpad for Innovative Technologies and Entrepreneurship, also known as FLITE.
“We are thrilled to partner with this next round of companies through FLITE to offer them the opportunity to test their products in a real-world airport environment,” Tory Richardson, President and CEO of the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority, said in a press release.
“With thousands of passengers traveling through our airport every day, we can introduce startup companies to a global market, providing them with a vibrant workspace to scale their air travel technology solutions to further enhance the guest experience.”
This is at least the second batch of companies to test their products at the airport through the FLITE program. In January, the MEDC announced three companies — U.K.-based Aurrigo; Japan-based WHILL; and Switzerland-based Sunflower Labs — were receiving $50,000 each to test an autonomous wheelchair, a digital mapping program, and an outdoor security drone.
Here’s a look at the five companies that will be testing products at the airport this time around:
Aircraft Data Fusion: The company, based in Apple Valley, Minnesota, will be using “web-based cloud solutions to provide real-time passenger forecasting.” The company was founded in 2001 by “airline industry veterans who use their decades of experience to solve challenges related to information overload and the timely use of critical data,” according to a news release.
Dataspeed: The company, based in metro Detroit, will be testing an autonomous service vehicle. The company says its focus is on research and development of autonomous vehicles, and that the vehicle it will be testing at the airport is fully automated but also interactive in the event emergencies or other incidents occur. “This innovative approach provides significantly increased performance and cost savings that the commercial operations industry has yet to experience,” according to an MEDC news release.
EVA: The company, based in Syracuse, New York, will be retooling its drone infrastructure to “revolutionize baggage delivery,” according to a news release. The company’s services include “edge cloud capability, quantum key encryption, on-time delivery, e-commerce, and a logistics marketplace where businesses can meet drone operators to transport goods and more.”
Renu Robotics: The company, based in San Antonio, Texas, will be testing autonomous lawn mowers. The company says its vehicles “continuously monitor, control and send updates in the field, while allowing access on specific mobile screens to track performance.”
Spotter ID: The company, based in Grand Rapids, will be developing sensor technology to help travelers identify open parking spots. The company says its products have “the potential to change how drivers park through its innovative smartphone application, on-location sensors, and real-time data.” The idea is to help drivers find a parking spot more quickly.

Xcaret Tourist Bus Catches Fire With 25 People On Board The Cancun Sun
Xcaret Tourist Bus Catches Fire With 25 People On Board – The Cancun Sun https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/xcaret-tourist-bus-catches-fire-with-25-people-on-board-the-cancun-sun/
Last Updated 12 mins ago
A tour bus owned by the popular Xcaret Group recently caught on fire in the Cancun Hotel Zone, with 25 people on board. The fire was not caused by criminals, like a number of other buses and transport vehicles in recent days, but rather an electrical issue, according to preliminary assessments. Although the bus completely burned, it is important to note that nobody was injured during the accident.

The incident took place around 8:00 am on Tuesday, September 20th, in the main tourist area of the city. It didn’t take long for police and firefighters to arrive, but despite their efforts, the tourist bus was completely burned and unsalvageable. Authorities, at the time that the incident occurred, indicated that the fire was possibly caused by a short circuit in the vehicle’s electrical system.

Xcaret Group operates a very popular ecological park in Playa del Carmen and is developing a new theme park in Valladolid, which is in the Mexican state of Yucatan, only a couple of hours from Cancun. The company also has its hands in the hotel industry and is currently in the process of developing more hotels in the Riviera Maya region. They plan to expand the company’s portfolio with an additional eight hotels to be built over the next 10 years.
Many people who visit Cancun make the trip to Xcaret Park, which offers 50 different attractions to enjoy while visiting. Both nature activities, as well as cultural activities are available for visitors to the park. The park gives curious tourists the opportunity to learn about the area, with cultural presentations like the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular show, and adventurous visitors the chance to explore their wild side with activities like swimming in underground rivers, ziplining through the jungle, and exploring local cenotes.
Xcaret tourist buses transport parkgoers, who include transportation in their packages, to and from the hotels in the Cancun Hotel Zone. It is unclear if the fire took place while getting ready to take visitors to the park or if it occurred at the end of the trip while returning tourists to their hotel properties. Typically these buses are safe, as very few safety incidents have been reported in the past, and the buses have transported thousands of tourists to and from the park since the park’s opening in 1991.
This isn’t the first time that an Xcaret property has been in the news this year, as there was a shooting in an Xcaret hotel earlier in the year. While the media made a big deal of the shooting, and the U.S. State Department issued safety warnings to those traveling to Mexico following the attack, no tourists were injured during this incident either. The shooting turned out to be a hit on a member of a criminal organization who fled Canada and ended up in Quintana Roo.
The Mexican state of Quintana Roo is home to the popular vacation destination Playa del Carmen, which is where Xcaret Park is located. It is also home to Cancun, a city that receives millions of tourists every year, many of which make the two-hour trip to explore all that the park has to offer during their trip. For those that do not wish to take the park’s own transportation to and from the park, there are other options.
The local Ado bus line is one option, but service hours can make it difficult to plan the day. There is also the option of renting a vehicle to make the 2-plus hour trip from Cancun to the park. The Xcaret tourist bus does remain the best option, though, and should be considered a safe way to travel to the very popular ecological park, as the recent fire was a very isolated incident that was not caused by any intentional wrong, according to information available now.

Inside Florida Tennis: Love Serving Autism Receives FRPA Award – USTA Florida https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/inside-florida-tennis-love-serving-autism-receives-frpa-award-usta-florida/
The Florida Recreation & Park Association (FRPA) held their Annual Conference earlier in September, which recognized different parks and recreation organizations for their commitment to healthy living and community growth.
There were 17 awards in total given out and one of them went to Palm Beach Gardens Recreation for offering Love Serving Autism (LSA) to their diverse array of citizens.
Love Serving Autism’s mission is to “expand life skills, especially functional communication, through multidisciplinary specialized therapeutic tennis instruction to increase community inclusion and independence of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Developmental Challenges.”
The Love Serving Autism program was recognized with it’s innovation in Florida adaptive tennis.
A partner organization with USTA Florida, Love Serving Autism has seen an overwhelming amount of success in the adaptive tennis scene throughout the state of Florida. This success was rewarded at the Florida Recreation & Park Association Annual Conference.
When it was time to name the winner for the “Innovative Programming Diversity, Equity and Inclusion” Award, it was revealed that the Love Serving Autism’s Therapeutic Tennis Camp at Palm Beach Gardens Recreation won. Lisa Pugliese, the founder of LSA said the program is extremely thankful to be recognized for their hard work.
“On behalf of Love Serving Autism, we thank FRPA and the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis and Pickleball Center for embracing and celebrating inclusion for neurodiverse individuals in our community,” Pugliese said.
USTA Florida stands firmly that “Tennis is for all” and Love Serving Autism has done a tremendous job staying true to that motto. With their goal set to get participants to apply their newly learned skills throughout the community, LSA has gone above and beyond with their work in the state of Florida.
Love Serving Autism has been a massive asset to adaptive tennis in Florida and around the country, and USTA Florida congratulates them on this achievement.

Happy Friday, everyone! Thursday’s action was all about the youngsters putting together big-time performances led by Kyle Bradish — or as Cole Douglas Claybourn on Twitter referred to him as “Kyle good-ish” — he’ll be here all day ladies and gentlemen. Bradish was fantastic against the Astros on Thursday. He threw 8 2/3 innings of shutout ball and allowed just two hits, no walks and struck out 10 on 100 pitchers. His slider velocity was up as was his curveball velocity in this outing. Bradish made a conscious decision to all but abandon his fastball and the results were excellent.
Bradish has now racked up a 1.65 ERA over his last six starts, and no that is not a typo. He is 21% rostered.
We’ll dive into more of the action from Thursday, but first make sure you’re all caught up on everything going over on the site. On the Fantasy Baseball Today podcast from Wednesday, Frank and Scott broke down the value of Aaron Judge moving forward specifically as it pertains to where he might get drafted in 2023 Fantasy drafts. So Scott decided to take that exercise a step further by predicting the first two rounds of your 2023 drafts and picking a spot for where Judge will land. You can find his analysis behind each pick here.
Judge comes off the board at No. 1 overall, per Scott: “He was already thought to be the best power hitter in the game, and the mushier baseballs have driven that point home, creating enough disparity to justify a pick this high. Durability would be the only other concern.”
I also thought it was interesting to see how high Julio Rodriguez came off the board for Scott at No. 5 overall — he was truly the steal of the drafts in 2022 — the best value and breakout pick combined and alone: “He’s already producing 98th-percentile max exit velocities at age 21, and he’s clearly shown his willingness to run as the majors’ only 25/25 guy so far. This ranking bakes in continued improvement, but the risk seems fairly low.”
Juan Soto still made Scott’s top-10 at No. 8 overall, but something tells me he’ll fall outside of the top 10 next spring. From Scott: “Another exceedingly difficult player to rank, Soto has had a career that would stack up to anyone’s through age 23 and was considered the best hitter in baseball at this time a year ago. There aren’t obvious red flags to explain his struggles.”
Wong triple dong
Kolten Wong went absolutely nuts on Thursday evening. Wong collected three hits and all three of them were home runs! He has now racked up a Roto-friendly 15 homers and 15 stolen bases this season.
Thursday’s pitching standouts
Jack Flaherty gets back on track with a quality start vs. the Padres. He threw six innings and allowed just two earned runs with nine strikeouts. His fastball velocity was up as was his slider and curveball velocity. Despite striking out nine, he induced just 10 swinging strikes.
Brandon Woodruff dropped six innings of one run ball with three hits allowed and 11 strikeouts against the Reds on Thursday. He now has a 3.18 ERA on the season after turning things around fast.
Justin Verlander threw in another quality start with six innings of two-run ball allowing just six hits and zero walks.

Fantasy news, injuries and notes
For a complete recap of every injury, update and more, make sure you’re locked into the Fantasy Baseball Today podcast where Frank, Scott and Chris dive deep into every player note. For the CliffsNotes version, we’ll recap the biggest news and notes you need to know right here:
Julio Rodriguez exited Thursday’s game with that recurring lower-back injury. He’ll undergo an MRI Friday.
Jarred Kelenic was recalled Wednesday and could see more playing time if Julio is out. He’s 28% rostered
Ronald Acuña was scratched Thursday due to mid-back tightness.
Trevor Story was finally placed on the IL with that left heel contusion, retroactive to Sept. 19.
Aaron Boone said Wednesday that the Yankees will go with a closer-by-committee approach. I would imagine that includes Aroldis Chapman, Scott Effross (just activated) and Clay Holmes.
Freddy Peralta could return this weekend against the Reds. He’s been out since Sept. 8 with shoulder fatigue.
Santiago Espinal was placed on the IL with a left oblique strain.
Brandon Nimmo was removed Wednesday with left quad tightness. The MRI came back clean.
David Bednar was activated by the Pirates and could be available in shallow leagues. He’s 66% rostered.
Ryne Nelson was placed on the IL with right scapula inflammation.
Andrew Benintendi is not expected to return before the playoffs. He’s on the IL with a broken hamate bone.
Seiya Suzuki is not expected back this weekend as he awaits the birth of his child.
Yandy Diaz has missed three straight with left shoulder soreness but he did receive a cortisone shot recently.
Drew Smyly will likely make his next start Tuesday or Wednesday against the Phillies. He was scratched this week with left shoulder fatigue.
Mike Soroka was placed on the minor-league IL with right elbow soreness and will be shut down for the rest of the season. We have not seen him pitch since August 3, 2020 mostly because of Achilles injuries.
Trevor Rogers was officially placed on the IL with a left lat strain. He’ll miss the rest of the season.
Joey Wendle was placed on the IL with left hamstring tendinitis.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are the biggest on-ramp to the cryptocurrency market among countries in Central & South Asia and Oceania (CSOA) according to a new report.
Blockchain intelligence firm Chainalysis said in a new report that the Asian region received $932 billion worth of crypto from July 2021 to June 2022, thanks largely to NFTs.
The study found that web traffic from IP addresses tied to countries in the region to cryptocurrency services was majorly NFT-related. In Q2 of 2022 alone, 58% of CSOA IP addresses accessing crypto services visited NFT-related websites. Another 21% was to the websites of play-to-earn blockchain games – which are “intimately related” to NFTs as most in-game items are NFTs.
According to Chainalysis, the finding is not entirely surprising as the region is an innovative hub for blockchain-based entertainment. Several game-centric blockchain developers including Polygon, Immutable X, Axie Infinity, and STEPN operate out of countries in the region.
Similarly, on a per country level, countries in the region including Vietnam and the Philippines are among global leaders in blockchain gaming adoption. Meanwhile, the third most popular driver of grassroot blockchain adoption in the region was remittance.
On a global scale, the CSOA region emerged as the third largest crypto market while seven countries in the region – Vietnam, the Philippines, India, Pakistan, Thailand, Nepal, and Indonesia – made the top 20 crypto markets index.
Regulations still a drawback for broader crypto adoption in the region
Despite the success of the crypto market in the region, the industry still faces strict regulatory regimes that could have hampered its progress. The report highlighted India and Pakistan as examples of countries where regulations have stifled the growth of the crypto market in the region.
Earlier this year, the Pakistani central bank and government proposed to ban cryptocurrencies in the country. Since then, up to three committees have been set up to deliberate on the recommendation without reaching any decision so far.
In India, the government has long had a crypto-averse stance having previously proposed to ban the asset class. The government introduced a 30% tax regime for crypto gains in April that has seen crypto exchanges’ trading volumes drop amidst outcry that there are no regulations to guide the industry.
According to a Bloomberg report, these protests from the market have not been paid any heed by the Indian government which is now using the police to issue threats of arrest to crypto investors.
The less than favorable regulatory climate in several other countries in the region has taken a toll on the region’s ranking causing it to fall in Chainalysis’ global crypto adoption index from 2021.
