WASHINGTON – At the “Equity in Focus Summit” at the U.S. Department of Labor in Washington, speakers and panelists discussed the importance of gender and racial equity in policymaking and workforce development. on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022.
Co-hosted by the department’s Women’s Bureau and the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations, the event featured remarks by Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff, Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su and the department’s Women’s Bureau Director Wendy Chun-Hoon. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler offered pre-recorded remarks.
Discussions focused on promising policies and programs in use at the national, regional, state and local levels. Participants included representatives from the private sector, unions, local government, workers and other stakeholders who shared strategies on how to use federal funds to increase job quality and advance equity for women and communities of color.
“Working women deserve good jobs, a prosperous career and the ability to support and care for their families,” said Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su. “When women are given a chance – including to do work traditionally occupied by men – it is not only good for women, it is good for everyone. Equity and excellence go hand in hand.”
The discussion also highlighted the Biden-Harris administration’s investments through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS and Science Act, and the Inflation Reduction Act, which will emphasize gender and racial equality in job creation in trades and industries.
“The historic investments in our nation’s roads, bridges, broadband and clean energy will create high-quality union jobs,” said Women’s Bureau Director Wendy Chun-Hoon. “We must seize this moment to use these investments to create greater gender and racial equity for all of our nation’s workers.”

“Welcome to Dar Naima,” I exclaimed, as I ushered two Spanish tourists into the opulent parlor of a Moroccan guesthouse in Fez.
The visitors looked slightly perplexed — not because an American was greeting them, an origin story I would later share, but because of the man lurking in the doorway, his face several shades of agitation.
“He wants us to pay him, but we didn’t ask him to carry our luggage,” said one of the sisters, who were traveling around Morocco together.
I explained that porters linger in the parking areas outside the medina and will cart bags through the car-free zone, sometimes without asking first. To defuse the situation, I reached into my wallet, pulled out a 10-dirham coin and paid the man. He asked for 20, but I firmly shook my head, as I had seen my host do. He departed with a huff, and our guests sank into the cushioned couch with relief.
Less than 24 hours on the job — and in the country — I was already fulfilling several of my responsibilities as a work exchange volunteer. (I presumed paying off the disgruntled porter fell under “guest assistance.”) I had flown a red-eye from Washington to Casablanca and caught about a four-hour train to Fez for the primary purpose of helping out at the hostel — plus several fringe benefits. In return for pitching in wherever and whenever, I received free accommodations, daily breakfast and a sense of contentment knowing that, in some small way, I was alleviating the pain caused by the pandemic.
“We had to close for two years,” said Hannan Diab, the 42-year-old owner who, until several months ago, had been running the property single-handedly. “It has been so hard. We need more people to come.”
The global health crisis has ravaged the travel and tourism sector, causing debilitating hardships. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council, the industry lost almost $4.9 trillion and 62 million jobs in 2020. In 2021, the industry recouped more than 18.2 million jobs globally, but gaps remain. For instance, the July employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated 1.5 million openings in the U.S. leisure and hospitality market, a 74 percent fill rate. The American Hotel & Lodging Association does not expect staffing to return to 2019 levels for at least another two years.
“Demand is back, but hotels can’t fill rooms, because they don’t have the staff,” said Chip Rogers, the association’s president and chief executive. “A lot of people are leaving the industry.”
To attract employees, lodgings are raising wages, offering more flexible schedules and ramping up the benefits, such as covering continuing-education expenses. Others are compensating for the labor shortage by limiting housekeeping, streamlining food-and-beverage menus and relying more on technology, such as mobile check-in, digital keys and room service delivered by robots that resemble paper shredders with personality.
Smaller, independent lodgings without HR departments or a strata of managers can pursue more audacious hiring practices. Bob Monahan, who owns Hostel du Nord in Duluth, Minn., has employed former guests who overstayed their travel budgets. This summer, he welcomed a professor from Mexico City who responded to a “volunteer wanted” post on Worldpackers, a work exchange website.
“He was the best employee I’ve ever had,” Monahan said of the educator, who he said plans to return for a second stint in November.
Though not always advertised, many establishments around the world accept travelers as temporary workers on a quid pro quo basis. The arrangement — to change sheets or wash dishes for room and board — is a win for both sides. The hotel can plug holes in staffing, and for the traveler, the free accommodations and meals can lessen the sting of escalating expenses, which these days include such basic necessities as food and fuel.
“It won’t fill millions of jobs,” Donna Quadri-Felitti, the Marvin Ashner endowed director of Pennsylvania State University’s School of Hospitality Management, said of work exchange programs, “but it is a fun idea.”
To find a volunteer opportunity, you can cold-call — or email or DM — a property. I messaged Heb Hostel in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides and received this positive reply: “We ask for 20 hours of work (mostly cleaning with some reception) in exchange for free accommodation in a dorm, free laundry and access to the free food cupboard. Mostly dry foods and some veg.” For more expansive searches with a high rate of success, I also signed up for Worldpackers and its fraternal twin, Workaway.
“Before the pandemic, it was more budget travelers and people on sabbaticals,” Ricardo Lima, the chief executive and co-founder of Worldpackers, said from his home in Brazil. “Now, it is especially used by Gen Z and people who are asking, ‘How can I help?’ ”
Workaway, which was founded 20 years ago, and Worldpackers, which is approximately a decade younger, do not charge to browse. For no cost but eyestrain, you can scan pages of listings, which include such essential information as location, description of tasks, daily time commitment, sleeping accommodations (often shared) and preferred skills or personality type. To apply for a position, however, you must pay an annual membership fee ($49), plus create a profile that is equal parts dating bio and résumé.
The sites corral thousands of opportunities on six continents, such as helping maintain and sail an electric catamaran in New Zealand, care for rescue animals at a shelter on the Galápagos Islands or manage the social media accounts of a desert camp in Jordan. Sympathetic to the struggles of hoteliers, I focused on guesthouses and hostels needing an extra pair of hands in housekeeping or at the front desk.
On Workaway, I discovered a familiar face: a lodge and bakery in Talkeetna, Alaska, where I had spent a weekend chasing down the northern lights and baking pies. In the “Help” section, the owner wrote that she had trimmed the staff down to one (herself). I submitted a request but never heard back. The site’s support team told me this happens and to move on.
So I did, to British Columbia. I corresponded with an inn on Cormorant Island, but the manager later sent me an apologetic note informing me that our calendars were not aligned. A family near the Black Sea in Turkey invited me to their guesthouse to clean rooms, tend the garden, feed the animals and entertain their daughter, but I had to decline because of the region’s fraught political situation. I took a swig of coffee and sent out a second wave of applications — to a hostel on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, a boutique hotel in the Austrian Alps, an eco-resort in Costa Rica and a rental property owner in Greece. No matches.
I was about to suspend my quest when a cheer erupted in my inbox: “Andrea, you’ve been chosen to be part of Dar Naima Fes Team as a Worldpacker! Yeah!”
I returned the “Yeah!” in the form of a confirmation.
For two years, no guests slept in Dar Naima’s six private rooms or eight-bed dormitory. No visitors sat down for a traditional Moroccan breakfast on the rooftop terrace. No new voices filled the 600-year-old riad inhabited by five generations of one Fez family.
Pre-pandemic, a staff of three cared for up to 30 international guests. The hostel reopened in March, and one employee — the tireless Amina Tawssi — has been cooking and cleaning six days a week for a trickle of primarily European visitors.
“I hope we can get back to three staff in December,” Hannan, the owner, said one evening, when we were eating grapes and drinking mint tea under a periwinkle North African sky.
I was the fourth laborer to land on Dar Naima’s doorstep. My predecessor, a Colombian woman who stayed for a month, taught Spanish to Hannan and produced alluring videos for the property’s Instagram account. My assets, I soon discovered, were my strong legs and native tongue.
Hannan put me on breakfast duty, which, as I informed guests during check-in, “is served on the terrace between 9 and 10:30.” However, when adjusted for Moroccan time and the volunteer’s jet lag, breakfast actually started closer to half past the hour.
The staff had previously prepared the morning meal in the rooftop kitchen, which the riad’s restaurant also used before it temporarily shuttered. (Morocco last suspended air travel in November and restored service in February.) Hannan was waiting for a part to repair the fridge. This meant that Amina had to whip up breakfast in the second-floor kitchen, and I had to scale several flights of steep steps carrying a silver tray laden with a carafe of coffee, a silver pot of tea, breads with spreads and eggs in a ceramic tagine pot. I often had to repeat trips when Amina would notice my empty hands, pantomime “tray” and point to the stairs.
In addition to serving, I was also a sous chef. My first job was to fill the tagine condiment vessels with strawberry and apricot jams and margarine. I graduated to squeezing oranges for the juice (an electric juicer, thankfully, so no wrist strain to hamper my tray-carrying duties) and slicing baguettes purchased from the charmingly gruff vendor around the corner. Amina, who was warming to my presence in her personal space, taught me a few skills along the way, such as how to make the sacred mint tea. On my third morning, she presented me with my very own apron.
“This is the best breakfast I have had in Morocco,” a Russian guest named Alex said as I cleared his table. I passed the compliment on to the Arabic-speaking chef, giving a thumbs-up over the empty plates. (A possible misinterpretation of my charade: I nailed busing the tables.)

In some Tampa Bay-area schools, students use foam rollers and vibrating spheres to massage their muscles as they work toward goals for strength and flexibility. It’s all part of a new physical education curriculum from quarterback Tom Brady, whose vision for healthy living is fueling a fitness empire.
The arrangement with schools in Pinellas County, Florida, marks a foray into education for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar and his methods — including some that have been criticized as pseudoscience.
Physical education experts have raised questions about the approach’s suitability for school-age children. But the program — and its connection with the seven-time Super Bowl champion — has stirred student interest in fitness and nutrition, others say.
“My legs are lot more loose, and they’re not so heavy on me,” said Antoine James, an eighth-grader. “It really helps.”
A pilot project has embedded parts of the program in gym and health courses in 10 middle and high schools in the 96,000-student district. The TB12 Foundation, the charitable arm of Brady’s fitness business, is picking up the tab to train district staff and provide them with equipment.

The marketing boost for TB12, of course, is free.
Adults who embrace the “TB12 Method,” as Brady described it in a 2017 book, can meet with a trainer for $200 an hour at one of his company’s training centers. His product line includes a plant-based protein powder, electrolytes and vibrating rollers that sell for $160.
“I’m sure one of the benefits is to help students get better exercise habits and physical fitness habits,” said Karen Rommelfanger, an adjunct professor of neurology and psychiatry at Emory University. “But does it also start to enroll another generation of consumers for their product?”
In Pinellas County, the plan is to expand to the rest of its middle and high schools next year. If all goes well, Brady’s foundation is looking to use the program as a model for other districts.
“Today we kind of focus on a little bit older client for the most part,” said Grant Shriver, president and CEO at TB12, where the average client is around 40. “This just kind of gives us a little bit of a vision of how we could go approach just more people.”
The TB12 Foundation’s first partnership in education started in 2020 with Brockton Public Schools in Massachusetts, where Brady played for the New England Patriots. TB12 took a dozen of the district’s athletes to its training center free of charge. That effort later expanded to Malden Public Schools, also in the Boston area.
“I grew up where you lifted heavy weights and, you know, you gauge strength by how much you could bench press and how much you can squat. And this is completely different,” said Brockton Public Schools Athletic Director Kevin Karo. His district is now contracting to use some of the TB12 staff as strength and conditioning coaches for student-athletes.
Most of Brady’s advice is fairly mainstream, including an emphasis on a positive attitude, good nutrition and adequate sleep. But some of his guidance has faced skepticism. He famously attributed his propensity not to sunburn to his high water intake in his book. His trainer, Alex Guerrero, was investigated before joining Brady by the Federal Trade Commission over unsubstantiated claims that a supplement he promoted could cure concussions.
Brady, 45, describes his approach as a departure from the lift-heavy gym culture. He endorses instead exercise bands and something he calls “pliability,” which includes an emphasis on flexibility and massage.
“I feel like everything I’ve learned over the course of 23 years in football has and will allow me to continue to help people in different ways,” Brady said Thursday. “I think starting young is really important, educating people on what works as opposed to the way things have always been.”
Sports trainers have been moving toward a model that includes a mixture of strength training, flexibility and balance exercises, said Mike Fantigrassi, the senior director of product development for the National Academy of Sports Medicine, which certifies trainers. But he said he had concerns with the word “pliability” being taught in schools as though it was scientifically proven.
“It’s a term that they made up,” he said. “Some of this stuff is not rooted in good science. And if you’re bringing a curriculum into schools, I believe it should be rooted in good science.”
Brady is one of the world’s greatest athletes but does not have expertise in teaching children, said Terri Drain, a past president of the Society of Health and Physical Educators.
“I just am a little bit alarmed that a school district the size of this one would grab onto this celebrity program,” said Drain, who runs a nonprofit that provides professional development for health and physical education teachers.
On the diet front, Brady advises against foods in the nightshade family like peppers, tomatoes and eggplants because of inflammation concerns. Experts like Eric Rimm say a lot of Brady’s diet guidance is extreme and not backed by a “huge science base.”
Still, Rimm, a professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health, said there could be benefits.
“If you’re getting rid of the average eighth grade American’s diet and shifting to what he eats, yeah, that’s a lot healthier,” he said. “That’s fantastic.”
One upside is the Brady name makes students perk up in class, said Allison Swank, an eighth grade wellness teacher and a track coach in Pinellas County.
“They definitely know who he is and it’s exciting for them to be able to relate what we’re going to be doing to his program,” she said.
In pilot classes, students take baseline assessments to evaluate areas like their strength, conditioning and flexibility. They then set goals to pursue for improvement, said pre-K-12 health and physical education specialist Ashley Grimes.
She said districts around the county have reached out, asking what the program is about and if it’s something they could do, too.
The program doesn’t use Brady’s book as a textbook, stressed Ben Wieder, a member of the Pinellas Education Foundation, who uses TB12 himself and approached the foundation about bringing the program to the district.
“Tom Brady eats avocado ice cream. Like, we don’t teach eating avocado ice cream,” Wieder said. Most of the science-backed elements of the curriculum are in line with Florida education standards, he said. “I think if you were to go through the book. you’re probably talking 90, 95% of the content is universally accepted.”

Sept 23 (Reuters) – U.S. bond funds witnessed huge outflows in the week to Sept. 21 as caution over the pace and length of U.S. interest rate increases crept in ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy decision.
According to Refinitiv Lipper data, U.S. bond funds recorded outflows worth $7.33 billion in their biggest weekly net selling since Aug. 24.

The Federal Reserve raised its benchmark rate by 75 basis points on Wednesday, the third such rise in a row, and officials project rates hitting 4.4% this year, which was 100 bps higher than what the Fed had projected three months ago. read more

The 10-year benchmark treasury yield hit a 12-year high of 3.829% on Friday and it is set for an eighth weekly increase as investors position for more aggressive U.S. interest rate increases to come.
U.S. short/intermediate investment-grade, high yield, and general domestic taxable fixed income funds, all faced outflows, worth $3.59 billion, $1.81 billion and $692 million respectively.
However, government bond funds received $3.02 billion in a fourth straight week of inflows.

Meanwhile, U.S. equity funds secured $3.99 billion in net buying after facing outflows for four successive weeks.
Value funds, which invest in companies with cheaper valuations and stable growth, gained inflows of $731 million, while growth funds lured $321 million in their first weekly inflow since Aug. 10.
“Value funds are generally less interest rate sensitive than growth funds, which has led to less day-to-day volatility and better performance as rates moved up over the course of 2022,” said Michael Crook, chief investment officer at Mill Creek Capital Advisors.
“We expect value stocks to continue outperforming growth stocks until the Fed hiking cycle has finished, which might be well into 2023 or even 2024.”

Among sector specific funds, tech and utilities obtained $401 million and $272 million respectively, but financials recorded outflows of $1.81 billion.

, /PRNewswire/ — On Day 1 of HUAWEI CONNECT 2022 yesterday, Huawei, its partners, and representatives from public and private organizations held a session exploring how technology is vital to building a sustainable and inclusive world envisioned by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with case studies and analyses focusing on the Asia Pacific region.
As one of the most populous and diverse regions in the world, Asia Pacific is also set to be the fastest-growing economy across the globe, with COVID-19 accelerating digital transformation in Asia-Pacific faster than the global average.
“More and more governments and organizations are beginning to recognize the enabling role of technology in accelerating the achievement of SDGs goals”, said Jeffrey Zhou, President of Huawei ICT marketing. “Under Huawei’s vision and mission, we launched the TECH4ALL digital inclusion initiative in 2019 and with global partners’ programs and projects are ongoing in different countries.”
Zhou was followed by an opening statement from Richard Mahony, Global VP of Informa Tech, who shared how the traditional method of maintaining sustainability is not working and that technology-based solutions are now needed as an accelerator.
UNESCO’s speaker then gave an overview of the objectives of the 17 SDGs and approaches to achieving them by the set goal of 2030. “While it is fundamentally up to governments to implement the SDG agenda, the simple fact is that it will not be realized without the private sector,” said Mohamad Djelid, Director of UNESCO Office in Jakarta, Indonesia. “We all have a role to play in achieving the ambitious, but necessary, Sustainable Development Agenda by 2030.”
Digital inclusion was a key area discussed during the session. While the digital divide is gradually shrinking, ITU recently reported that 2.7 billion people in the world still remain offline. Due to a lack of network connectivity, digital skills, affordable devices, or a combination of these factors, too many people remain unable to access the digital tools that are necessary in today’s increasingly digital world. “No one should be left offline”, said Atsuko Okuda, Director of the ITU Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific. “Digital technology and ICT development can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.”
Huawei’ David Lu, President of Asia Pacific Strategy & Marketing Department, introduced the latest progress and the role of ICT in TECH4ALL projects globally, and especially in Asia Pacific, including the Digital Bus in Thailand, which is bringing connectivity and digital skills to rural children; the Digital Village program in Indonesia, which is providing affordable connectivity to rural communities via the RuralStar solution; and the introduction of remote 5G-powered healthcare for rural communities and information accessibility solutions for the elderly in Thailand. Mr. Lu mentioned, that through collaboration between technology companies and global organizations, the future for Asia Pacific will be bright and sustainable, achieving the goal of leaving no one behind.
Another key theme of the session covered how technology can boost nature conservation. Shawn Tan, Vice President of the leading green energy solutions provider, Sunseap, shared how the Singaporean company expects to offset 4,000 tons of CO2 per year with its innovative floating solar farm. The solution, which uses Huawei’s smart PV solution, is deployed offshore in Singapore.
Continuing the theme of environmental-protection, Malaysia’s Sarawak Forestry Corporation began the first pilot project with Huawei’s TECH4ALL, in collaboration with Sarawak Multimedia Authority, Forest Department Sarawak and Rainforest Connection, designed to protect one of the world’s oldest rainforests at 140 million years old, the Sarawak rainforests.
Huawei is running more than 45 TECH4ALL projects with more than 40 global partners, focusing on equitable and quality education, conserving nature with technology, developing inclusive healthcare, and achieving balanced development.

Vivian Davidson Hewitt, the late New Castle native who became the first Black librarian in Pittsburgh, will be honored by family and special presenters during a ceremony on Saturday.
Hewitt died May 29 at her home in Manhattan. She was 102.
The event will take place at 6 p.m. at The Confluence, at 214 E. Washington St. in New Castle.
New Castle Public Library director Andrew Henley said Hewitt, who was ordained by the late Queen Elizabeth II, will be honored by her family, Lawrence County, the City of New Castle, the NAACP and The Ministerium.
Henley said Hewitt and her family have deep roots in New Castle, growing up on the East Side.
At least two of her grandchildren will be attending, with her cousin to present a speech about Hewitt’s life.
The NAACP and The Ministerium will be presenting checks in Hewitt’s honor, with the city and the county to present proclamations honoring Hewitt’s life and accomplishments.
Hewitt was Pittsburgh’s first Black librarian and later became the first Black president of the Special Libraries Association. Among her many accolades, she was awarded the honorary title of Dame by Queen Elizabeth II in 2016.
She worked with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and later held positions in the libraries of Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University), the Rockefeller Foundation and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, in addition to working for the Crowell-Collier Publishing Company in New York City.

A new forecast by the University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization (UHERO) reveals a darker economic horizon for the state since its last forecast in May, due to the global economy slowing sharply, and the U.S. heading for a mild recession in the first half of next year.
Hawaiʻi may escape overall net job losses, thanks to the recovery of visitor travel from Japan, which is now underway. But high inflation, higher travel costs and the Fed’s interest rate hikes will still adversely impact Hawaiʻi households and businesses.
Highlights of the September 23 report:
The global outlook has worsened significantly since the last report. Persistently high inflation is causing central banks to raise interest rates more sharply than expected. Russia’s war with Ukraine has inflicted an energy crisis on Europe, which is now clearly headed for recession. China’s economy continues to suffer from its zero-COVID policy. Global growth has slowed to about 3% this year and will soften further in 2023.
The U.S. is not yet in a recession, but one is anticipated in 2023. In the face of 8%-plus inflation, the Fed will make additional large interest rate hikes, sharply reducing spending. High mortgage rates have already caused a downturn in the national housing market, and high inflation is eating into household budgets. While labor markets remain tight for now, U.S. growth is expected to manage just 0.3% next year.
COVID-19 has receded as a critical economic risk. The U.S. population has largely returned to business as usual. Barring an unexpectedly virulent resurgence, the biggest remaining concerns are the labor force impacts of long COVID and ongoing shutdowns in China.
Hawaiʻi’s visitor industry continues to make recovery progress. The international visitor market has made significant strides, adding to strong domestic travel. Japanese visitors are finally returning to the islands, even as a weak yen and high costs weigh on their vacation spending. The timing of Hawaiʻi’s international tourism recovery will provide a much-needed lift as growth in other sectors slows in 2023.
Although the Hawaiʻi labor market is tight, with unemployment just over 4%, the number of payroll jobs remains below pre-pandemic levels. The ongoing visitor industry recovery will support job gains in tourism-related areas next year, while many other sectors experience weakness. Aggregate job growth will slow from more than 5% this year to 1.7% in 2023.
Inflation in Hawaiʻi is running lower than on the continental U.S., but it is nevertheless inflicting pain on Hawaiʻi households and businesses. Nominal wage gains are not keeping up with rising prices. Together with the ending of pandemic-era federal support programs, this is dragging down real (inflation-adjusted) income. Total real income from all sources will drop more than 5% for this year as a whole and manage just over 1% growth in 2023, before firming.
Cost pressures will continue to challenge the construction sector in 2023. But despite a small pullback in employment this year, the industry will sustain a high level of activity, with key support from several very large public-sector projects that are currently in the engineering and design phase.
UHERO forecasts that while Hawaiʻi will likely escape an outright contraction in economic activity, it will still be adversely affected by softer global conditions, further interest rate hikes and temporarily high inflation. Significant downside risks exist, given the perilous path facing the U.S. and global economies.

Cynthia Dye talks about her latest design project for Dye Designs, Erbil Hills Golf Club, which will see the opening of the first championship golf course in the Kurdistan region of Iraq later this year. Do you follow a specific design style when working on a new project? How did the land you were presented with at Erbil Hills influence your thoughts?
The topography of the land was a major consideration in the layout of Erbil Hills. The site for this project has a large valley running through the whole length of it. The high end has a 3.5m storm drain under a new highway that connects the site to the upper valleys. The golf course is routed along a water detention system in the bottom of the valley. As a result, water can be seen on every hole, but it is not always in play.
The residential villas are located on the slopes overlooking the golf course. Most would think of Iraq as a flat desert, but this northern part in very fertile pasture and agricultural land. The large mountain range to the north is only 25 minutes’ drive away. It is very important to the Iraqis to see water and green, and at Erbil Hills there is a lot of both.

How does the experience of designing Erbil Hills compare to other projects you have previously worked on?
Erbil Hills reminds me of my experience working in Palm Springs in California. The climate and vegetation are very similar, with hot summers and the rest of the seasons perfect. There is lots of green grass, lakes, flowering trees and shrubs and palm trees. For these same reasons Palm Springs became the premier golfing destination in the US. Like most golf courses in Palm Springs, the golf course at Erbil Hills will be surrounded by properties. Erbil has a more natural setting than Palm Springs, with the golf course located in a valley and the villas on the slopes above. In Palm Springs a lot of earthworks were necessary to achieve this kind of setting.
What have been some of the biggest challenges so far in creating the golf course in Erbil and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge is timing. They started construction before the plan set was done. The design of storm drainage system going through the golf course had not been finished. I was always trying to catch up. There were even design changes to the masterplan during the construction phase.
The expansive water system circulation is very important and critical to the quality of the water. But it all got done and the finished product is going to be amazing. Thankfully, we had the golf course rough shaped and had a site review in December 2019 before the pandemic hit. Also, a lot of the materials were on site before the borders and airport closed.
Because the workers live on site they were able to continue working throughout the pandemic. One of the shapers was there for six months straight without leaving the site in order to get the shaping done. Because I was unable to get out there during Covid I had to use FaceTime to review the finish shaping of the holes and greens. That was tough because the reflection off the sand makes everything on site look flat. The landscape materials are being ordered and I like to stake the streets myself, so I hope to get over there soon.
What can Erbil Hills and the Kurdistan region learn from other local golf markets in terms of introducing and developing the game of golf?
The best way to introduce golf to a new market is to get the families involved. There are five sets of tees, wide fairways, and open approaches to the greens to accommodate all ages and levels of play at Erbil Hills. There is a large practice putting green that can be set up as a putting course for fun games. The driving range can also be set up as a par 3 course, which makes it fun for all. It will also be floodlit for night-time play and practice. Social golf events that are fun and exciting are key to introducing golf to new players.

Global miner Anglo American, together with the Anglo American Foundation, have pledged $15-million to support the Global Fund, aimed at ending HIV/Aids, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, and building resilient systems for health and pandemic preparedness.
The pledge was delivered in New York, during the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment.
Anglo American and the Anglo American Foundation’s combined $15-million contribution will fall under the Global Fund’s Digital Health Impact Accelerator Catalytic Fund – which will promote investment in community health systems to improve the quality of community health worker programmes through digitisation, for example through the improvement of the interoperability of health data systems.
Partners for this initiative include Zenysis and Novartis Foundation.
The health and wellbeing of employees and host communities is noted to form an integral part of Anglo American’s Sustainable Mining Plan.
Built around three major sustainability pillars of Healthy Environment, Thriving Communities and Trusted Corporate Leader, the plan is aligned with the attainment of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Thriving Communities focuses on creating better health, well-being, education, and employment outcomes for host communities, with considerable investments by the company and the Anglo American Foundation on long-term system-level change within priority focus areas, including healthy living.

More than a decade ago, Chautauqua County resident Warren Beyer recalled the horrors of growing up with a condition that many Americans have not had to worry about for decades. Beyer, at age 7, contracted poliomyelitis. It can lead to paralysis and, in a worst-case scenario, become fatal.
“Many of my muscles were affected, even my diaphragm so I could not breathe for myself,” he said while speaking at a Music on the Pier event in Dunkirk in 2011 that was dedicated to the Rotary mission of eradicating polio worldwide. He said his condition became so debilitating he was placed in an iron lung to help stimulate his breathing.
His recovery from the virus was filled with challenges. He remembered going through “intense physical therapy” for 18 months to two years. “It was extremely painful,” he said.
Beyer persevered — and went on to become a teacher in Dunkirk schools before later sharing a financial planning business with Dan Ryel in Fredonia. His story of struggle with the disease was something from the past — and becoming somewhat of a rarity in our nation.
Across the globe, efforts to end polio had been making significant strides.
Led by the work of international Rotary Clubs, including those in Chautauqua County, cases were dwindling on an annual basis. When the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988, polio was present in more than 125 countries and paralyzed about 1,000 children per day. Since that time, immunizations have reached nearly 3 billion children and accounted for a 99% decrease in cases while being prevalent in only two countries — Afghanistan and Pakistan.
But COVID-19 put a halt to that progress. With much of the world on lockdown — and international travel at a near-standstill — polio cases rose again with 31 countries currently noting at least one case.
A newcomer to the list included the United States with a confirmed case from July in Rockland County, which is north of New York City. Earlier this month, state Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a state of emergency after the poliovirus was detected in wastewater samples collected in Orange, Rockland, and Sullivan counties in April, May, June, July, and August.
Whether vaccine hesitation, which has been highly debated across the nation over the last two years due to the pandemic, has played a role in polio’s resurgence is unknown. “On polio, we simply cannot roll the dice,” state Health Commissioner Dr. Mary T. Bassett said earlier this month. “If you or your child are unvaccinated or not up to date with vaccinations, the risk of paralytic disease is real. I urge New Yorkers to not accept any risk at all. Polio immunization is safe and effective — protecting nearly all people against disease who receive the recommended doses. Do not wait to vaccinate.”
Polio’s reality could be witnessed in a number of Third World countries, where inadequate sanitation leads to a greater spread of the virus through contaminated water. Mothers with young children gather in large crowds for that magic drop of the oral vaccine in their infant’s mouth as a layer of protection against a potentially deadly ailment.
Here in New York, there appears to be less urgency. In announcing the state of emergency, numbers of those vaccinated against polio were revealed. Surprisingly, many counties are at a rate of less than 90%. Statewide, the percentage is 77 with Chautauqua County at 85%.
This month, the topic of polio was discussed at the county Health Board meeting. Christine Schuyler, public health director, noted her office has received calls from adults wanting to get the vaccine. “Right now there is no recommendation for this polio, so (health insurance isn’t) paying for it,” she said.
Billionaire Bill Gates, Microsoft founder, partnered with Rotary in 2013 through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to eliminate the virus in the last decade. He expressed alarm by America’s most recent case. “News that polio has been detected in New York wastewater samples is an urgent reminder: until we #EndPolio for good, it remains a threat to us all,” he said on Twitter. “The global eradication strategy must be fully supported to protect people everywhere.”
Three years ago, our world was within whiskers of putting polio to rest. COVID — and the ensuing debate over vaccinations — appears to have given that virus from the past a dangerous new life.

Hadean, which aims to build the infrastructure for metaverse environments, has raised $30 million in Series A funding in a round led by Molten Ventures and including Epic Games, the developer of online video game Fornite.
Other participants included 2050 Capital, Alumni Ventures, Aster Capital, Entrepreneur First and InQTe, Hadean said Friday.
“As an open platform for distributed cloud computing, Hadean can be considered the ‘infrastructure’ that powers the metaverse so it can become a reality,” the London-based company said.
The metaverse is a digital world created by the combination of virtual reality, augmented reality and the internet. While the technology is in its infancy, many believe it will profoundly change the worlds of gaming, social media and ecommerce. Last week, JPMorgan said in a research report that the metaverse-related economy of China alone could reach $4 trillion.

If you aren’t familiar, the El Faro was a cargo ship leaving Florida for Puerto Rico loaded with cars and containers in 2015. But hurricane Joaquin changed that forever. Through the misguidance of the Captain using weather reports that weren’t updated, El Faro was directly in the path of the hurricane. In fact, in the NTSB report, they had satellite imagery of El Faro near the eye of the storm.

I would say it’s the most personal thing I’ve ever done, yeah. The most ambitious and the most important, too.
Jay was a 1983 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and worked as a mariner for years before becoming an artist. Five of the El Faro victims also were MMA graduates, including the ship’s captain, 53-year-old Michael Davidson from Windham.
The names of all 33 people who perished when the El Faro sank in the Caribbean Sea during Hurricane Joaquin in October 2015 are etched into the sculpture. Deb Roberts lost her 25-year-old son in the tragedy. She says that the grief has lessened over the past seven years, but losing someone at sea is hard. There is no gravesite to go to. There is no place for flowers.

U.S. digital asset-focused bank Custodia has filed a lawsuit against the Federal Reserve (FED) Board of Governors and the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City over “unlawfully” delaying its application for a master account with the FED. The bank received major backing earlier this week after seven U.S. Congressmen submitted a friend of the court brief. The lawmakers urged a Wyoming court to dismiss the FED’s motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
The brief was filed by three Republican senators, including Cynthia Lummis, Steve Daines and Kevin Cramer, and four GOP members of the House of Representatives, including Warren Davidson, Ted Budd, Trey Hollingsworth, and William Timmons. A similar document has also been submitted by the state of Wyoming, Yahoo! Finance reported.
“For more than 19 months, Defendants have refused to act upon Custodia’s application for a master account with the Federal Reserve,” the company said in its lawsuit.
The bank says the sued institutions violated the one-year statutory deadline for processing its application. They also breached the schedule contained on the master account paperwork which says that such a decision should take five to seven business days. If Custodia secures a favorable ruling, this could accelerate similar registration procedures for other crypto businesses.
Lummis, who represents the state of Wyoming in the U.S. Senate, has established herself as a crypto-friendly lawmaker, paving the way for legislation that could stimulate the industry’s growth. Last June, together with Democratic senator representing the state of New York, Kirsten Gillibrand, she introduced a draft bill, dubbed the ‘Responsible Financial Innovation Act’ which makes “a clear distinction between digital assets that are commodities or securities”.
The bi-partisan legislative proposal aims to provide “digital asset companies [with] the ability to determine what their regulatory obligations will be,” according to the bill’s summary.
Custodia was set up in 2020 by Caitlin Long, a former executive at Morgan Stanley, and initially operated under the brand of Avanti. The bank declares its objective is to provide its business customers with a full range of banking and financial services with a focus on digital assets. Custodia is a Wyoming-chartered special purpose depository institution (SPDI).

WASHINGTON, Sept 23 (Reuters) – Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives rolled out an agenda on Friday aimed at tackling a range of priorities from inflation and crime to election accountability, which they hope will give them the upper hand against Democrats in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.
The agenda, called the “Commitment to America,” claims to show voters how Republicans would address problems they blame on President Joe Biden and the Democrats, should they succeed in winning the House majority.
Elements of the plan, which lawmakers spent months crafting, began to appear online on Thursday.

Much of the agenda entailed policy objectives such as curbing wasteful spending, supporting U.S. troops, putting parents in charge of their children’s education, protecting the unborn, and preserving women’s sports for those whose gender assigned at birth was female.
On the issue of crime, the agenda aims to put 200,000 more police on the streets by providing federal funding for recruitment and retention bonuses.
The agenda also pledged a host of investigations on issues including fentanyl addiction, COVID-19’s origins, Big Tech “censorship,” the U.S. Afghanistan withdrawal, “politicization” of the Justice Department and the border crisis.
But the plan offered few specifics and little detail about how Republicans would expect to achieve their goals while the White House – and possibly the Senate – remain in Democratic hands.
Control of the Senate is up for grabs in November. But Republicans are favored by nonpartisan election analysts to erase Democrats’ 221-212 House majority. Doing so would give them the power to block Biden’s legislative agenda and to launch potentially politically damaging investigations into his administration.
Democrats’ fortunes have improved in recent weeks. A national Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Sept. 12 found that 37% of Americans would prefer to vote for a Democratic congressional candidate, with 34% preferring Republicans and 15% still undecided.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the chamber’s top Democrat, poured scorn on the emerging agenda on Thursday, warning that Republicans wanted only to ban abortion nationwide, cut Medicare and Social Security, and raise taxes on working Americans.

The design of the upcoming Google Pixel Watch, the first smartwatch in the Pixel series, has been seen before. However, we never really had a closer look at a few design elements of the watch, including how thick the wearable’s bezels were.
The black bezels of the Pixel Watch in all its official and leaked images conveniently blended the display with the dial, making it impossible to gauge where the screen actually started. A new video released by Google, however, finally spills the beans on the matter.
The minute long-video showcases a number of features of the Google Pixel Watch including the unique locking mechanism for its straps, the various colour options and the textured crown. It also shows us that the bezels on the circular dial of the Pixel Watch are much bigger than we expected.
The section of the video that shows multiple watch faces on the watch has black areas around the dial’s perimeter that don’t really light up with any watch face. That’s likely because those are big black bezels and not part of the screen itself.
With bezels so chunky, no doubt Google has shown the watch with only darker watch faces so far, which somewhat help camouflage the large bezels. However, if this is the true bezel size of the watch, a lighter-coloured watch face would look terrible, reminiscent of early smartwatches from years ago.
A report by Digital Trends also points out that the Pixel Watch is set to be powered by an Exynos chipset from 2018 and could launch at a starting price of around $350 (about Rs 28,359), none of which help justify its seemingly outdated design.
The Pixel Watch is set to launch alongside the Pixel 7 series globally on October 6 next month. While the Pixel 7 series was recently confirmed to get an India launch, we still have no concrete availability details on the watch, but this should be confirmed on launch day.

Midterm elections are always a bit strange. On the one hand, there’s no presidential contest to reverberate down the ticket to state and local races, so the latter are able to stand on their own. At the same time, voters tend to express their feelings about the current administration at the midterm ballot box, especially in congressional races. But this year is especially weird, because not only is President Joe Biden’s performance a factor, but former President Donald Trump still looms over everything.
We scoured the West to bring you a sampling of notable — and hotly contested — races and referendums.
U.S. House of Representatives, at large:
Mary Peltola, D, vs. Sarah Palin, R., vs. Nick Begich, R., vs. Chris Bye, Libertarian
Peltola, who became the first Alaska Native to serve in Congress by winning a special election in August, will face Trump-backed Palin again in November.
Governor:
Katie Hobbs, D., vs. Kari Lake, R.
Hobbs, a veteran of Arizona politics, takes on former news anchor and Donald Trump-loyalist Lake in a bid to become the purple state’s first Democratic governor since 2009.
U.S. Senate:
Mark Kelly, D., vs. Blake Masters, R.
White nationalist and Trump-supporter Masters, bankrolled by arch-conservative venture capitalist Peter Thiel, hopes to unseat Kelly, who was elected in 2020.
Ballot measure:
Proposition 308 would repeal 2006’s Prop. 300, allowing non-citizen residents to receive in-state tuition.
Ballot measures:
Proposition 30 would increase the tax on personal income above $2 million by 1.75%, with the revenue going toward electric vehicle projects and wildfire prevention.
Proposition 26 would legalize sports betting at tribal casinos.
U.S. House of Representatives, 3rd District:
Lauren Boebert, R., vs. Adam Frisch, D.
Former Aspen City Councilman Frisch hopes to bring bipartisanship back to a district represented by gunslinging Trump protégée Boebert since 2020.
Ballot measures:
Initiative 58 would decriminalize certain psychedelic plants and mushrooms, including mescaline and psilocybin, and classify them as natural medicines.
Initiative 108 would dedicate one-tenth of 1% of state income tax revenues to fund housing programs.
Ballot Measure:
Proposition 1 would increase state income taxes on high-income individuals and corporations and allocate the revenue to public education.
U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District (newly formed):
Monica Tramel, D, vs. Ryan Zinke, R.
Zinke, a former congressman and Trump’s scandal-plagued first Interior secretary, takes on Tramel, a former Olympic rower who grew up on a Montana ranch.
U.S. House of Representatives, 2nd District:
Gabe Vasquez, D., vs. Yvette Herrell, R.
Former Las Cruces City Councilman Vasquez, a first-generation American who has worked on conservation and Borderlands issues, hopes to unseat fossil fuel-friendly Herrell in a district that includes the Permian Basin, the nation’s busiest oilfield.
Governor:
Steve Sisolak, D., vs. Joe Lombardo, R.
Former Clark County Sheriff Lombardo has swung rightward on gun control and immigration in his bid to unseat incumbent Sisolak.
Ballot measures:
The Equal Rights Amendment would prohibit discrimination on account of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, ancestry or national origin.
The Nevada Minimum Wage Amendment would increase the minimum wage to $12 per hour by 2024.
Governor:
Tina Kotek, D., vs. Christine Drazan, R.
A progressive Democrat takes on a moderate Republican to replace the term-limited Democratic governor, Kate Brown.
Ballot measures:
Measure 111 would add the following language to the state Constitution: “ensure that every resident has access to cost-effective, clinically appropriate and affordable health care as a fundamental right.”
Measure 114 would require permits for firearms and prohibit
ammunition magazines that can hold more than 10 rounds.
State House District 69:
Davina Smith, D., vs. Phil Lyman, R.
Smith (Diné) is vying to become the first Indigenous woman to serve in the Utah Legislature. She faces Lyman in the race to represent the state’s southeastern corner, which contains parts of three tribal nations and has long been a Sagebrush Rebellion hotspot.
U.S. House of Representatives, 4th District:
Dan Newhouse, R, vs. Doug White, D.
Newhouse, one of the few Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, is hoping to hang on to his seat in this conservative rural district that covers most of central Washington. He’s challenged by Doug White, a moderate Democrat.
U.S. House of Representatives, at large:
Lynnette Grey Bull, D., vs. Harriet Hageman, R.
Grey Bull (Northern Arapaho) is waging a “David and Goliath” campaign against Hageman, who unseated incumbent Rep. Liz Cheney in the primary. Grey Bull has been active in social justice campaigns, helping the homeless and bringing attention to missing and murdered Indigenous women. Hageman has spent most of her career fighting environmental regulations, earning her the moniker “Wicked Witch of the West.”

Despite rising costs and changing world events, international travel is poised to increase among affluent Americans over the next year, according to new research by MMGY Travel Intelligence. Today, the company released the findings of its Portrait of American International Travelersstudy, presented in collaboration with the United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA). Examining data from more than 2,000 respondents, the comprehensive national survey found that high-income, outbound U.S. travelers intend to take an average of 3.8 international vacations in the next 12 months, up 72% from 2.2 in 2019. Additionally, the average outbound traveler anticipates spending a total of $15,364 on international trips in the coming year – a 16% increase when compared to pre-pandemic spending predictions.
“It’s clear that there is a willingness and growing appetite to travel internationally, but the important thing for marketers to note is that the American traveler looks and acts quite differently than they did before COVID-19,” said MMGY Travel Intelligence Europe Managing Director Cees Bosselaar. “As international tourism ramps back up, destinations should continue to be mindful of the new concerns and challenges that today’s travelers face throughout the course of their journeys.”
Key findings from the third annual study include:
Although overall interest in foreign travel is up, the number of destinations U.S. travelers want to visit is down compared to pre-pandemic, suggesting that travelers have become more selective in their purchase decisions. Europe, the South Pacific, the Caribbean and Canada were the top four destinations cited by U.S. travelers as places they want to visit.
Indicating a shift in travel patterns, the study also noted an overall increase in interest in visiting less-crowded destinations and those that offer an abundance of outdoor activities.
Examining generational differences, the study found that American Millennials plan to go on more international trips than Boomers (5.7 vs. 1.5 in the next 12 months) though Boomers anticipate spending twice as much on each trip ($7,725 vs. $3,564).
Travel disruptions such as flight cancellations or delays reign supreme as the top concern for Americans traveling internationally. Concerns surrounding travel disruptions were shared equally across all generations, whereas other concerns such as inflation and COVID-19 appear to have more of an impact on younger travelers. Personal safety, as it relates to violence and unrest, and sustainability practices round out the top areas of concern for travelers.
“This study confirms that the sustainability efforts of a travel service provider or a destination are impacting travel decisions, primarily for younger generations,” said Terry Dale, President & CEO of USTOA. “Sixty-three percent of Millennials indicate that a travel service provider’s focus on sustainability impacts their travel decision-making.” Dale added that USTOA is using its milestone 50th anniversary in 2022 to look “50 years forward” to help its tour operator members initiate and grow sustainable and responsible practices to meet these evolving traveler expectations.

Presented in partnership with USTOA, the third annual national survey of American international travelers examines the travel behaviors, spending habits, preferences and motivators of 2,024 respondents surveyed in July 2022. After recovering from an illness or accident, it may be necessary to apply some discipline in order to achieve the best results. It might potentially take more time for you to restore your fitness if you dive back into your routines at full pace without giving your body a chance to rest and heal. Perhaps worse, it might result in a reinjury or relapse.
The risk for complications, such as myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle), for those referred to as long haulers who endure chronic COVID-19 symptoms, adds another degree of complexity to starting physical exercise again. Hence, it is important to inculcate working out slowly and gradually. In this article, we discuss how you can reincorporate a healthy workout routine post-covid.
Tips on safely exercising post-covid recovery:
1. Be slow and persistent
Your past level of activity will determine how you should begin exercising following COVID-19. For the majority of people, you should begin with a simple walking program and progressively increase your walking tolerance. Once you’ve done that for a few weeks, you can add in more strenuous cardio, but only to the point where your heart rate is somewhat higher than it was when you were walking. A stationary cycle, treadmill, or taking up a sport like swimming would be good places to start. If during the course of a few weeks you could gradually increase the intensity, handle it, and still feel fine, you may resume.
2. Avoid exercising if you are still experiencing symptoms
The most crucial thing to keep in mind is to avoid exercising when experiencing symptoms like fever, exhaustion, or shortness of breath. Instead, folks should hold off on exercising until they have been rid of symptoms for 7 to 10 days. Exercise is never advised if you are ill or experiencing the symptoms of an infection that is active. If you exercise when you have a viral illness that is already active, it could make it worse and cause other issues.
3. Regularly monitor heart rate
You must first determine your resting heart rate. It’s critical to understand where you are beginning from because this may have altered since your COVID-19 diagnosis. By checking your pulse, you can determine your heart rate in a variety of ways. Or, a heart rate monitor is a fantastic tool for physical activity if you would prefer to have a device providing you feedback.
4. Take your time
The likelihood of myocarditis following COVID-19 has gotten more attention. People should move slowly and pay attention to their bodies in consideration of this. When COVID-19 is present, it can cause severe inflammation throughout the body, some of which can harm the heart muscle and result in myocarditis. This may cause a ventricular arrhythmia, which could result in a heart attack, or it may cause an arrhythmia when the heart beats erratically. Patients should speak with their doctor before resuming vigorous activities or exercise if they have underlying past heart or pulmonary issues.
5. Try stabilising exercises
Yoga, Pilates, and core workouts are all excellent ways to revive your stabilising muscles, recover your range of motion, and get your body moving once more. Due to the drop in your activity levels, your core muscles have likely lost some of their capacity. As a result, be careful to breathe through your repetitions and focus all of your mental attention on making your movement powerful, solid, and conscious.
In conclusion, these small steps can be helpful in covid-19 recovery and provide your body with the right amount of break. Make sure to get follow-up tests and discuss with your doctor what is best for you.

Speak to people working in the metaverse and one descriptor follows it around: “It’s like the Wild West.” Make of that what you will. Is it a new frontier for people seeking their fortune? A lawless land? A place characterized by the unknown, removed from the rest of society? Perhaps all of the above. But one thing’s for sure — people in the Wild West weren’t dropping $650,000 in cryptocurrency on a digital yacht.
The metaverse — a growing number of immersive virtual online worlds where users live and play — has become a hotbed of real estate speculation. Investors are betting on it being an integral part of a possible paradigm shift in how we use the internet — a decentralized version called Web3, which its supporters argue will wrest control of the web from big tech companies and distribute power, privacy and security back to users.
According to consultancy firm McKinsey, corporations, venture capitalists and private equity invested $120 billion in the metaverse between January and May 2022, more than double the $57 billion invested in 2021.
But real estate values have had a rocky ride. Land prices in the four major metaverse platforms, The Sandbox, Decentraland, Cryptovoxels and Somnium Space, have fallen 50 to 80% this year, according to Winston Robson, CEO and co-founder of metaverse analytics company WeMeta. He pointed to problems in the real-world economy and the cryptocurrency market as contributing to the decline.
Look beyond the numbers, however, and you’ll find whole professions being shaken up, from architects and designers to developers and real estate agents. And far from being isolated to the metaverse, their ventures there are already impacting the real world.
Building for the future
George Bileca, CEO of Voxel Architects, studied architecture and design, and was working towards a career in car design when he was given some land in Cryptovoxels to play with. At the start of the pandemic, he used it to build a dealership to sell NFTs (non-fungible tokens) of digital cars designed by his friend. Two years later, Bileca has a team of 25 working full time in the metaverse.
Voxel Architects, headquartered in Portugal, has designed and built over 100 metaverse projects, said the CEO, including galleries for auction house Sotheby’s, fashion week venues and an NFT manufacturing plant for American artist Tom Sachs. Next up: an official Elvis Presley experience in The Sandbox and Decentraland.

Initially, the design process for metaverse buildings is much the same as in the real world, said Bileca. An architect or designer consults with a client, and sketches ideas, either on paper or computer. Once a design is agreed upon, it is 3D-modeled, using traditional design software, but conforming to the design spec of the metaverse it will populate (different metaverses use different building blocks, and have different texture and color ranges).
Then coding begins. “The build is only an empty carcass,” Bileca explained. “On top of that shell we add the functionality, like being able to open doors, to interact with artworks … to create custom (user interfaces), gameplay quests and many other interactive elements.” Once completed, it is deployed into a metaverse.

The studio charges an hourly rate for its work, with some projects running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars — the most expensive being close to $500,000 for designing, building and deploying a development in The Sandbox, says Bileca, who did not reveal the client.
Brand ambitions
Some are buying properties for recreational use; others are trying to generate revenue from their land. Some are building retail spaces or ticketed experiences; others are renting their land to brands trying to reach consumers in the metaverse. According to McKinsey, e-commerce in the metaverse could have up to a $2.6 trillion market impact by 2030.
LandVault claims to be the biggest land developer in the metaverse, renting its land to brands and developing campaigns for them. Just don’t call it advertizing, insists CEO Sam Huber. “In Web3 … the word actually doesn’t have a place,” he said. “What we’re building is not advertizing. It’s brand experiences, which is very different.”
He gave the example of playing a game in the metaverse, inside an arena bearing a Mastercard logo. “You can still play your game. That is not advertizing. That is not annoying. That is like real life,” he argued.
“(Online) advertising as we know it, intrusive … compromising user data and so on — that just doesn’t have a place in Web3.”

As with the real world, location has a large impact on rental price. Being in an area with high footfall, near a much-loved game or close to a prized asset (a celebrity’s house, for example) can be important. But some are making the case that good design has value too.
One advocate is Janine Yorio, CEO of Everyrealm. The metaverse development company, previously known as Republic Realm, has received $66 million in funding to date and is backed by celebrities including The Weeknd, Will Smith and Paris Hilton. Its luxury projects have generated headlines. In November 2021 Everyrealm bought 792 parcels of The Sandbox (the equivalent of about three square miles) for $4.3 million — still a record purchase. Around the same time it sold the $650,000 superyacht, the Metaflower, complete with DJ booth, helipad and hot tub for the discerning buyer.
The company’s latest venture is The Row, an upcoming invite-only community of 30 houses. Everyrealm invited artists including Daniel Arsham, Misha Kahn and Alexis Christodoulou to contribute designs. Alongside neoclassical buildings and giant cantilevers are alien shapes, fulfilling the promise of digital architecture unbound by the laws of physics.
“We really let the artists just have free rein,” said Yorio. The driving principal, she added, was “architecture so important and exclusive, that it becomes something that people look to as sort of a high watermark.”

Yorio cites Everyrealm’s Fantasy Island project — in which 100 private islands in The Sandbox sold out in a single afternoon in August 2021 — as an example of how these assets can appreciate. Sold at approximately $15,000 each, the CEO said they now trade for around $100,000, down from $250,000 at the height of the cryptocurrency and NFT market boom in late 2021.
Buyers of property in The Row will be purchasing architectural plans in the form of an NFT, which can be built and deployed on different platforms.

“We want to adhere to the ethos of decentralization,” Yorio said, but the sale model also speaks to the uncertainty that hangs over investing in the metaverse. “It’s very difficult to know which metaverse is going to be the most popular in one year or five years,” she said.
With the name of the development inspired by Billionaires’ Row in Manhattan, Everyrealm has enlisted the services of elite New York real estate brokers Oren and Tal Alexander to oversee sales.
The Alexander brothers are currently screening prospective buyers, said Yorio, with private sales starting in September. “We want to make sure that art goes to the right type of collectors, and not people that are looking to buy and flip and create that NFT hyper-speculation dynamic,” she explained. Prices were not disclosed to CNN.
Yorio disputed the idea The Row was an example of the metaverse heading towards social stratification. “This is about owning one of the first seminal works of three-dimensional inhabitable art in a new media. And I think that’s a very different conversation (to), ‘we’re building a country club that only 30 people can join,'” she argued.
The search for stability
The long-term value of metaverse property may also hinge on whether users decide to work as well as play there.
Pallavi Dean, CEO of Dubai-based design studio Roar, is already doing so, having bought company space in Decentraland. Dean wanted to showcase Roar’s work to clients and purchased four plots for around $60,000 in total in January 2022. “You have to have skin in the game before you convince other people,” she said. “I’m writing this off as marketing money.”
She’s already moved some of her business operations into the metaverse, hosting client meetings in Roar’s virtual office. In the next couple of months, she plans to run a training course from her metaverse meeting room.

Roar is also looking to generate revenue in the metaverse, building an NFT gallery, a retail space and floating pods which could become a hotel. Although Dean concedes she’s still waiting for her first rental and first NFT sale, she remains hopeful of future growth.

There have been quite a handful of crypto developments over the past few days including the announcement of Royal Enfield non-fungible tokens (NFT), introduction of a bill regarding crypto sanctions in the UK, JPMorgan Chase bank calling Bitcoin a scam, and others.
Royal Enfield NFT To Be Launched On Ethereum Blockchain Based Platform
Royal Enfield, the maker of the popular Classic 350, Bullet, and other motorcycles in India and abroad had announced its foray into Web 3.0 technology, NFT by partnering up with an Ethereum (ETH) based NFT platform called foundation.app.
In a release Royal Enfield said that they will launch their NFT collection featuring 10 exclusive winning artwork designs from the last two seasons of their Art of Motorcycling programme. All of these NFTs are priced at Rs 15,000 each. The NFTs will be released on October 3.
Puneet Sood, global head of apparel business at Royal Enfield, said, “Art Of Motorcycling is intended to give designers, artists, illustrators and motorcycling enthusiasts a platform to illustrate their love for motorcycling. United Kingdom Introduces The Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency bill
The U.K. has introduced this bill as originally promised in May by the Home Office, and it essentially makes it easier for law enforcement agencies to seize, freeze and recover crypto assets if they are used for various criminal activities like money laundering, drugs, cybercrime, and others.
“Domestic and international criminals have for years laundered the proceeds of their crime and corruption by abusing U.K. company structures, and are increasingly using cryptocurrencies,” Graeme Biggar, director general of the National Crime Agency, said in the statement, reported Coindesk.

JPMorgan Chase Bank Calls Bitcoin ‘Decentralised Scam’
Jamie Dimon, CEO, JPMorgan Chase Bank, one of the big 4 U.S. based banks, said in a U.S congressional hearing, “I’m a major sceptic on crypto tokens, which you call currency, like bitcoin. They are decentralised Ponzi schemes,” reported Bloomberg.
Dimon also argued that digital currencies are being used by an increased number of criminals in their illicit operations including sex trafficking and money laundering, among others.
Dimon, however, is quite vocal about the underlying technology behind these digital currencies i.e. blockchain, metaverse, others and said that these technologies are ral and can be deployed in both public and private use cases, permissioned or not.

Michael Saylor Says The Price Will Reach $69,000/Bitcoin In 4 Years
Michael Saylor is the co-founder and chairman of IT company MicroStrategy, which is the world’s largest corporate Bitcoin holder with about 1,30,000 BTC tokens in its reserves at an average price of $30,639. He said in an interview to Marketwatch, that Bitcoin could go back to the $68,990 levels sometime in the next four years and could also reach $5,00,000 levels in the next decade “if it matches the market cap of gold.”
Saylor also said that his company is also making developments on the Lightning network, which is a payment protocol layered on the Bitcoin network.
Ethereum Miners Rally Up To Dump Ethereum
Ethereum miners who no longer can mine Ethereum (ETH) tokens have reportedly sold more than 16,000 ETH tokens and are still left with about 2,45,000 ETH tokens. According to on-chain data analysed by Oklink, a blockchain analytics firm, miners dumped about 16,000 ETH tokens from September 12 to September 19 and this was worth more than $300 million.
Lucas Ontumuro, head of research, IntoTheBlock, in an interview to Coindesk, said that miners are moving onto other blockchains by taking their profit from ETH holdings out.
“Miners dumping their ETH is an overhang that we’ll have to get through over the coming months in order to resume up-only mode, but it will happen,” Lucas Campbell, editor of the Bankless newsletter on September 19 in a newsletter, reported Coindesk.
