Rushing ‘token Mapping’ Could Hurt Aussie Crypto Space — Finder Founder – Cointelegraph https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/rushing-token-mapping-could-hurt-aussie-crypto-space-finder-founder-cointelegraph/ Australian crypto entrepreneur and investor Fred Schebesta has described the Australian government’s prioritization of token mapping as “wonderful,” but warns that rushing it could lead to detrimental effects on the economy. Schebesta’s comments come after Australian Treasurer Jim Chalmers released a statement on Aug. 22 stating that the “treasury will prioritize token mapping work” in 2022 to show how “crypto assets and related services should be regulated.” Speaking to Cointelegraph, Schebesta believes Australia already has a “fledgling” crypto industry but needs to “align with the other major markets and their regulations.” Schebesta added that the “intricacies” of token mapping are not clear, and “things are changing as well.” Schebesta is an Australian entrepreneur and investor — best known as the co-founder of Finder, an Australian comparison website. Schebesta is also a co-founder of crypto investment fund Hive Empire Capital and an advisor for Balthazar, an NFT gaming platform. He explained that if “we rush” — the token mapping exercise could turn away crypto companies, particularly if there’s a “very different approach” to other countries. Schebesta stressed that it’s not the time to “rush it out,” but take the time “to just take it easy and really, really do some deeper analysis.” The token-mapping announcement from Australia’s new Labor government came three months after it came into power, breaking a long silence on how it would approach crypto regulation in the country. At the time, Treasurer Chalmers said the government wanted to reign in on the “largely unregulated” crypto sector. “As it stands, the crypto sector is largely unregulated, and we need to do some work to get the balance right so we can embrace new and innovative technologies,” he said.  Related: Australia’s new government finally signals its crypto regulation stance While many in the industry lauded the announcement as an “important step” for the industry, some were disappointed that there the country was not “further along” the path to regulatory certainty.  Australian lawyer Liam Hennessy, partner at Gadens told Cointelegraph that Australia has been at the “forefront of the crypto developments,” but worries that the country is “slowly falling behind the U.K. and U.S.” due to failure to create rules for those “in the crypto industry, in particular those in financial services.” Hennessy believes that while token mapping is vital, it shouldn’t be the primary focus for regulators.  “It should be secondary to actually creating some tax rules and regulations around licensing that we can give to our businesses that really need to hear it so they can compete with our global competitors.” He fears that Australia is falling into the trap of “thinking that a little bit of attention from the government will solve the problems,” which he believes that the token mapping exercise “to some extent, is being viewed as.” Schebesta said he spoke at a senate hearing in 2021 where he highlighted “Australia would have a huge influx of new businesses […] because it’s a safe, stable, and great regulatory place to build their business,” adding that “tens of thousands” of jobs would be created “in the next two to three years.”

South Korean President Overheard Insulting U.S. Congress As ‘idiots’ – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/south-korean-president-overheard-insulting-u-s-congress-as-idiots-the-washington-post/ South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol was caught on a hot mic Wednesday insulting U.S. Congress members as “idiots” who could be a potential embarrassment for President Biden if they did not approve funding for global public health. Yoon had just met with Biden at the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment Conference in New York City. There, Biden had pledged $6 billion from the United States to the public health campaign, which fights AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide. The funding would require congressional approval. “It would be so humiliating for Biden if these idiots don’t pass it in Congress,” Yoon was overheard telling a group of aides as they left the event. Video of the exchange quickly went viral in South Korea, where Yoon took office in May. Representatives for Yoon did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday. A spokesman for the National Security Counsel said in a statement Thursday it would “not comment on the hot mic comments.” “Our relationship with the Republic of Korea is strong and growing,” the statement said. “President Biden counts President Yoon as a key ally. The two leaders had a good, productive meeting on the margins of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday.” Park Hong-keun, the leader of the opposition Democratic Party in South Korea, criticized Yoon’s “foul language tarnishing the U.S. Congress” as “a major diplomatic mishap,” Agence France-Presse reported. Yoon and Biden were both in New York for the U.N. General Assembly, where they held discussions on the sidelines Wednesday. “The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen the U.S.-ROK alliance and ensure close cooperation to address the threat posed by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the White House said in a readout of their meeting. “The Presidents also discussed our ongoing cooperation on a broad range of priority issues including supply chain resilience, critical technologies, economic and energy security, global health, and climate change.” Min Joo Kim contributed to this report. West Virginia Vs. Virginia Tech: Live Stream, Watch Online, TV Channel, Prediction, Pick, Spread, Odds – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/west-virginia-vs-virginia-tech-live-stream-watch-online-tv-channel-prediction-pick-spread-odds-cbs-sports/ Virginia Tech and West Virginia will renew their regional and one-time conference rivalry when they battle Thursday night for the Black Diamond Trophy on a national stage in Blacksburg, Virginia. The two schools played every year from 1975 until 2005, including a run from 1991-2003 as members of the Big East. With the Mountaineers now in the Big 12 and the Hokies in the ACC, it’s taken some effort to keep this fierce rivalry going in the modern era.  Thursday night’s matchup is the second leg of a home-and-home agreement that already provided thrills with West Virginia beating Virginia Tech 27-21 in Morgantown last season, increasing the Mountaineers’ all-time series lead to 29-23-1. Though a lot has changed since that game, most notably a coaching change for the Hokies and new starting quarterbacks for both teams, the passion felt up and down both rosters to win this rivalry game has not lessened. Plus, considering how the season has started for both teams, there should be plenty of urgency to snag a victory in one of the true toss-up games on the schedule.  So while coaches Neal Brown and Brent Pry have just one combined appearance in the battle for the Black Diamond Trophy, there will be plenty of players and fans with intimate awareness of what’s at stake. Let’s get into the keys to the game and our official prediction.  West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech: Need to know JT Daniels leads the West Virginia offense: The 2017 Max Preps National Player of the Year is on his third college stop, having started and won games at USC, Georgia and now West Virginia. Daniels has six touchdowns and two interceptions through three games, and it hasn’t taken long for him to identify junior Bryce Ford-Wheaton as the most dynamic option in the passing attack. Ford-Wheaton is one of just two wide receivers in the Big 12 to have four touchdown receptions already this season, and his 6-foot-3, 224-pound frame allows Daniels to take some chances in one-on-one situations knowing the wideout has the better chance of winning 50-50 balls.  The Lunch Pail Defense is back: Pry got his start in coaching as a graduate assistant working under legendary Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster. In his return to Blacksburg, Pry has brought back the famous lunch pail that represents the group’s blue-collar approach. That defense is the strength of this team so far; the Hokies rank third in the country in rushing defense (42 yards per game), fifth in total defense (201 yards per game) and in the top 20 in scoring defense, allowing just 12.33 points per game. That rushing defense will be a key for Virginia Tech in this game as West Virginia freshman CJ Donaldson currently leads the Big 12 with six rushing touchdowns on the season.   Increased pressure on West Virginia after 1-2 start: While Virginia Tech is still very much laying the foundation of the Brent Pry era, things are much different for Brown and the Mountaineers in Year 4. The fact that this is a rivalry game adds extra pressure from the fans, especially in the wake of the heartbreaking loss to Pitt in the renewal of the Backyard Brawl. A loss here to Virginia Tech would drop West Virginia to 1-3, with two ranked opponents coming up next on the schedule in No. 22 Texas and No. 17 Baylor. Brown has led West Virginia to a bowl game in each of the past two seasons, and there are enough winnable games left on the schedule to think he can do it again in 2022. A loss here, though, makes that margin for error razor thin and cranks up the pressure from fans as the calendar flips to October.   How to watch West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech live Date: Thursday, Sept. 22 | Time: 7:30 p.m. ET Location: Lane Stadium — Blacksburg, Virginia TV: ESPN | Live stream: fuboTV (Try for free) West Virginia vs. Virginia Tech prediction, picks Virginia Tech has been somewhat of a fixture on Thursday night football, and the Hokies have had more success than not in these nationally televised opportunities, going 23-10 overall and 13-5 at home. Pry understands the value of these regional rivalries well, and while ACC Championship contention may be a few years away, this is one trophy that he can bring home to Hokie Nation right now. Virginia Tech gets it done, covering the spread in the process.   Prediction: Virginia Tech +1.5  Which college football picks can you make with confidence in Week 4, and which Top 25 favorite will go down hard? Visit SportsLine to see which teams will win and cover the spread — all from a proven computer model that has returned more than $3,300 in profit over the past six-plus seasons — and find out.

Clark County COVID-19 Infection Rate Dips The Columbian
Clark County COVID-19 Infection Rate Dips – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/clark-county-covid-19-infection-rate-dips-the-columbian/ Published: September 22, 2022, 2:57pm (iStock.com) Clark County’s rate of COVID-19 infections decreased slightly this week, as did rates of new hospitalizations, according to the latest data from Clark County Public Health. The county continues to remain in the low-risk category for disease transmission, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The COVID-19 activity rate, which measures new cases per 100,000 population over seven days, decreased from 78.3 last week to 75.3 as of Thursday, according to Clark County Public Health data. Though Clark County remains in the low-risk category, health officials still advise residents to use tools such as vaccinations, testing and mask wearing to continue to slow the spread, according to Lacy Fehrenbach, the chief of prevention, safety and health at the Washington State Department of Health. Clark County Public Health reported 383 new cases this week, pushing the total recorded cases to 105,199 to date. If you test positive for COVID-19 with an at-home test, health officials ask that you report it to the state’s COVID-19 hotline at 1-800-525-0127. The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least five days upon testing positive. There were eight deaths from COVID-19 reported this week, bringing the county’s total to 922 to date. Clark County hospitals were treating 42 people with or suspected of having COVID-19 as of this week, down from 51 last week. The rate of new hospital admissions over seven days decreased to 6 per 100,000 over seven days, down from 8.4 last week. Hospitals remain near capacity, with 97.5 percent of hospital beds occupied and 94.8 percent of ICU beds occupied. Patients with or suspected of having COVID-19 accounted for 8 percent of hospital beds and 10.3 percent of intensive care unit beds, according to Public Health data. Washington will no longer be in a state of emergency due to COVID-19 as of Nov. 1, according to Fehrenbach. That does not mean the end of COVID-19, she emphasized in a media briefing on Thursday. As flu season begins soon, health officials recommend anyone over the age of six get their flu vaccine, which can be received along with a COVID-19 vaccine or booster, according to Michele Roberts, assistant secretary for prevention, safety and health at the Washington State Department of Health.

The 16 Best Hikes On Oahu For Every Skill Level – U.S. News & World Report https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-16-best-hikes-on-oahu-for-every-skill-level-u-s-news-world-report/ Hiking is one of the best ways to experience the gorgeous island of O’ahu. Whether you’re looking for a light stroll or a challenging climb on your Hawaii vacation, the top O’ahu trails highlight the natural beauty of this island paradise. Treat yourself to jaw-dropping views of the vast Pacific Ocean and iconic landmarks as you trek past all kinds of indigenous and introduced flowers, plants and trees. You’ll also get to hear the sounds of both rare and common birds and other critters that live in the lush valleys and forested trails. Lace up your boots and hit the trails to be inspired by what nature has to offer on some of the best hikes on O’ahu. Hikers should be sure to proceed with caution and respect while venturing out onto the trails. Don’t veer off the paths, adhere to trail signs, check the weather beforehand, pack enough water, wear closed-toe shoes and check in at trailhead stations. It is also important to be considerate of the people, land and wildlife as you hike; visitors must remember to pack out what you packed in. (Note: Some of the following hikes and locations may be affected by the COVID-19 pandemic or trail conditions. New policies may be in place, including capacity restrictions, reservation requirements or mask mandates. Check with the Department of Land and Natural Resources for trail updates.) The Top Oahu Hikes for Every Skill Level Easy Hikes Puu Ohia (Mount Tantalus) Trail (Heather Goodman/Courtesy of Hawaii Tourism Authority) Approximate total length: 1 mileApproximate elevation gain: 350 feetTrail type: Out and back At just about a mile out and back, the Pu’u Ohia Trail is generally considered easy, although it’s not entirely flat. You’ll experience gradual elevation gain through a serene bamboo forest to get to the top of Mount Tantalus; look out for the iconic hibiscus flower. Recent hikers praise the trail for being shady but warn it can get slippery after rain. Some add that while the views along the hike are beautiful, there’s sometimes not much to see at the top because of overgrown bushes and trees. From the trail you can see the volcanic Lē’ahi (also called Diamond Head), downtown Honolulu, the Ko’olau Range and other peaks. The trailhead is easily accessible with parking available at the top of Tantalus Drive. This hike is part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network, which comprises 18 interconnected trails. Follow this route out and back or take connecting trails such as the Mānoa Cliffs Trail for a longer excursion. This is a popular area for hiking, birding and trail running. You can even bring your furry friend on a leash, but beware of hunting on the trail, as hunting dogs may be off-leash. Waimea Valley Trail Approximate total length: 2 milesApproximate elevation gain: 270 feetTrail type: Out and back Waimea Valley, which stretches from the mountains to the sea, is located on the North Shore. It is directly across from Waimea Bay, a legendary big wave surfing hot spot. This plot of land is home to numerous botanical gardens with thriving flora and fauna. Recent visitors comment that the flowers, in particular, are impressive. Waimea Valley awes tourists with its natural beauty and is revered by locals as a significant cultural and historic site. Explore the area on your own or as part of a free tour, but note that you will have to pay a fee to enter Waimea Valley. The paved Waimea Valley Trail – less than 2 miles round trip – winds through the world-class botanical gardens and past historical sites, leading to a natural 45-foot waterfall. Most of this popular trail is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, though it can be steep. For a fee, shuttle rides also take travelers to the waterfall turnaround area. Guests are often allowed to swim in the pool at the waterfall for a truebucket list activity; swimming access depends on daily conditions, and some visitors warn that the cascade isn’t always flowing, so check ahead if you plan to take a dip. Life vests are required for swimming and provided at no charge by lifeguards on duty. Diamond Head (Leahi) Summit Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2 milesApproximate elevation gain: 450 feetTrail type: Out and back The silhouette of Diamond Head, called Lē’ahi in Hawaiian, is probably what most people envision when they think of Hawaii. Did you know it’s an extinct volcanic crater and you can actually hike to the top? At just under 2 miles round trip, the steep Diamond Head Summit Trail is one of the most well-known hikes on the island. With nearly 3,000 visitors a day here, recent hikers warn it can get crowded. This trail is part of the 475-acre Diamond Head State Monument. The peak provides spectacular views of famous Waikīkī Beach and the expansive Pacific Ocean. To get to the summit, you have to endure about 200 steps and a few dimly lit tunnels. The trail and tunnels were originally built as part of the coastal defense system in O’ahu; atop the crater you’ll notice old military bunkers and a 1917 navigational lighthouse. This trail is easy to get to since Lē’ahi sits only a few miles east of Waikīkī. Reservations are required for out-of-state visitors, and the parking and entry fees must be paid online in advance. No dogs are allowed here. Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 500 feetTrail type: Out and back This hike is a relatively easy 2.5 miles round trip with about 500 feet of elevation gain. The paved trail leads to the 1909 red-roofed Makapu’u Lighthouse, which can be seen from the summit. Located within the Kaiwi State Scenic Shoreline, the Makapu’u Point Lighthouse Trail provides stunning views of Koko Head and Koko Crater, Makapu’u Beach, the small islands of Mānana (Rabbit Island) and Kāohikaipu, and Moloka’i on a clear day. Also keep your eyes open for migrating humpback whales in December through May; you may want to pack a pair of binoculars. Bring plenty of water and sunscreen, as hikers warn it can get hot on the exposed trail. The parking area with trailhead access is located off Kalaniana’ole Highway. Kaena Point Trail (from North via Farrington Highway) (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 225 feetTrail type: Out and back If you’re looking for a hike closer to the ocean, this is the one. The Ka’ena Point Trail hugs the coast along the westernmost point of O’ahu and offers dramatic ocean vistas. The 5-mile dirt trail, which used to be a railroad bed, is accessible to hikers and bikers, but leave your dog behind. Recent visitors commented that the trail, which is considered fairly easy, is rocky and there’s no shade; it can also be windy. Along the way, you may spot monk seals on the beach, but don’t get too close. While hiking in this area you’ll also find tide pools, natural stone arches, blowholes, seabirds and native vegetation. For an intermediate-level addition to your hike, climb up to the pillbox – a World War II-era observation structure. If you begin on the Mokulē’ia side, at the end you’ll arrive at the remote Ka’ena Point Natural Area Reserve; you can park at the end of the paved road before setting out. Easy to Moderate Hikes Manoa (Waihi) Falls Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 1.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 630 feetTrail type: Out and back Situated only a short drive from Waikīkī at the back of lush Mānoa Valley, the Mānoa Falls Trail is one of the most easily accessible waterfall hikes on O’ahu for all skill levels, meaning it’s also often heavily trafficked. This out-and-back trail – part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network – is about 1.7 miles total and has an elevation gain of about 630 feet. If you feel like you’ve just set foot on a tropical movie set when you hike this trail, that’s because you have: The trail has served as a filming location for shows like “Lost” and movies such as “Jurassic Park.” The dog-friendly trail (for pets on a leash) winds through a shipping container into a field, across a wooden footbridge framed by eucalyptus trees and past a freshwater pool, taking hikers through a lush rainforest before arriving at a viewing area of Mānoa Falls. There are a couple of rest stops along the way. Parents praise this hike as being family-friendly. To get to the trailhead, take Mānoa Road to Paradise Park and park either in the lot there or in the neighborhood, taking care not to leave valuables in your car. Due to the year-round rainfall in the area, the trail can be muddy, so wearing appropriate footwear is advised. Mosquitoes can also be found here as well, so it’s not a bad idea to carry bug spray. Makiki Valley Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 2.5 milesApproximate elevation gain: 800 feetTrail type: Out and back This out-and-back hike starts at the Hawaii Nature Center. Considered an easy to moderate trek, the Makiki Valley Trail is part of the Honolulu-Mauka Trail Network. As you wander along the path, you’ll encounter many types of vegetation, including banyan trees; native ti (also called ki) plants, which are used to make skirts for hula; and kukui trees, whose nuts were used by early Hawaiians to make leis. Near the end of the trail, travelers will climb along the side of the volcanic black cinder cone, Sugarloaf (Pu’u Kakea). Watch your footing on this hike, as the trail includes stream crossings and slippery rocks; past hikers do warn that it can be muddy. Visitors’ dogs must be on a leash on hiking trails. Waahila Ridge Trail (Getty Images) Approximate total length: 3 milesApproximate elevation gain: 960 feetTrail type: Out and back Located in the Wa’ahila Ridge State Park, the Wa’ahila Ridge Trail is about 3 miles long. At 80.86, Re Dives To New Low Against Dollar – The Indian Express https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/at-80-86-re-dives-to-new-low-against-dollar-the-indian-express/ The rupee fell 90 paise to a record low of 80.86 against the dollar on Thursday after the US Federal Reserve raised its interest rate by 75 basis points and hinted at more hikes in the future. Opening weakly at 80.27 over its previous close of 79.96 against the greenback, the rupee fell to an all-time intra-day low of 80.95, before ending at 80.86. On Thursday, foreign institutional investors net sold Rs 2,509.55 crore of shares in the domestic capital market, as per data available on BSE. Experts said that after the Fed action, the dollar index can see a significant increase and major market currencies, including the rupee, will be under pressure. “Federal Reserve sounded extremely hawkish. Following that, the US dollar rose significantly against almost all the currencies, and the rupee had to respond,” said Anindya Banerjee, vice president, currency derivatives and interest rate derivatives, Kotak Securities Ltd. “If we start seeing the rupee depreciating, then from a USD returns perspective for FPIs, India becomes unattractive. We could also witness a reversal of FPI flows in the near to medium term, which will increase market volatility,” said Naveen Kulkarni, chief investment officer, Axis Securities PMS. He added higher interest rates in the US will force major central banks, including in India, to raise interest rates to stem the pressure on their domestic currencies and with increased interest rates and cost of capital, market multiples can contract. Meanwhile, equity indices on Thursday retreated for the second straight session. The Sensex fell 337.06 points, or 0.57 per cent, to 59,119.72 and the Nifty by 88.55 points, or 0.50 per cent, to end at 17,629.80. Experts said despite the fall in the past many months, the rupee’s performance is much better than other major currencies. In a speech on September 5, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das said so far this year, the rupee has moved in an orderly manner and has held its own in a world of sharp depreciation across other emerging market economies’ and advanced economies’ currencies. “While the US dollar has appreciated by 11.8 per cent during the current financial year so far, the rupee has depreciated by 5.1 per cent, which is among the lowest in the world,” he had said. Although the Reserve Bank has been intervening in the forex market, it has always maintained that the aim is to curb volatility in the exchange rate and not to target any particular level. Forex traders suspect the RBI to have intervened in the foreign exchange market at the 80.80-80.85 levels on Thursday, which helped the rupee gain 20 paise during the trading session. However, towards the session’s end, it lost those gains, they said. Newsletter | Click to get the day’s best explainers in your inbox The RBI has been selling dollars from the forex reserves in order to maintain the rupee’s stability. From April 1 to September 9, the RBI has used around $55 billion from the forex kitty. “In recognition of the fact that there is a genuine shortfall of supply of forex in the market relative to demand because of import and debt servicing requirements and portfolio outflows, the RBI has been supplying US dollars to the market to ensure that there is adequate forex liquidity,” Das had said during a speech in July. “After all, this is the very purpose for which we had accumulated reserves when the capital inflows were strong. And, may I add, you buy an umbrella to use it when it rains!” The RBI’s monetary policy decision on September 30 is the next big event forex market participants will focus on.

Could it be Nebraska? Artificial turf or grass debate is picking up steam again. It has inspired intense debate in NFL circles since the heyday of AstroTurf. Players say that turf shortens their careers and adds to the injury risk already inherent in a contact sport. Team owners counter that synthetic surfaces cost less to maintain and offer the durability to host more money-making events. The NFL’s ultimate goal is an ambitious one. Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse A New Era For Brands Lexology
Milan Fashion Week And Fashion Law Trends: Fashion In The Metaverse – A New Era For Brands – Lexology https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/milan-fashion-week-and-fashion-law-trends-fashion-in-the-metaverse-a-new-era-for-brands-lexology/ From updating retail experiences, to wearable technology, innovation is continuously inspiring and influencing trends and fashions. Also, following Facebook rebranding into “Meta” in late 2021, the term “Metaverse” definitely entered the common vocabulary and fashion brands are continuously seeking to conquer this new innovative world. The Metaverse is a new virtual universe characterized by an augmented reality that combines aspects of the digital and physical worlds, allowing people to adopt new ways of digitally exploring their everyday life and living a second life through 3D avatars controlled by technology that incorporates the real into the virtual. In this innovative context, thus, companies need to find new ways to stay relevant and the rise of the Metaverse still represents a big challenge – but also a huge opportunity – for fashion brands. In fact, innovative technology within the fashion industry is more apparent than ever. Entering the Metaverse, fashion brands transform the purchasing experience, also taking inspiration from the physical retail in order to become “phygital”. In this new world, avatars can indeed visit new malls and fashion shops that offer digital garments to be bought with virtual currency, experimenting a new kind of hyper-realistic shopping that goes beyond the traditional physical in-shop experience. Over the course of the last year, a number of major brands have already taken a place in the Metaverse expanding their business in a variety of ways. In particular, Nike, Gucci and Forever 21 partnered with Roblox in 2021 and invited digital customers to embark on a unique trip respectively in Nikeland, Shop City or the virtual Gucci Garden. Also Balenciaga successfully accessed Web3 through a collaboration with Fortnite, creating an authentic and exclusive collection of Balenciaga x Fortnite looks that users can purchase for their gaming avatars. Similarly, Ralph Lauren partnered with South Korean social network App Zepeto to release a virtual fashion collection for its players. As part of fashion’s integration into the digital landscape, also the Fashion Week has gotten “phygital”. Brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Etro and Elie Saab took part in the first Metaverse Fashion Week that was run in Decentraland in 2022, featuring luxury brands, household names and digital-native designers promoting their collections at 3D catwalks and exclusive events. Alongside the development of more diverse worlds and fashion experiences, brands also exploit NFT projects and more 3D designer engagements. In particular, Dolce & Gabbana bagged the record for the most expensive suit ever sold, a digital Glass Suit, which fetched the Italian brand a cool $1 million late last year, whereas Gucci’s Queen Bee Dionysus virtual bag has been recently sold for 350,000 Robux (an in-game currency) meaning $ 4,000 (that is more than the bag’s real-life valuation). Louis Vuitton, instead, launched a new video game that allows players to hunt for 30 NFTs hidden within its digital world. Such NFTs then permit to gain access to various exclusive events organized by the luxury brand. If the Metaverse is plenty of new opportunities, it is also full of risks. In fact, companies operating in the Metaverse shall be ready to redefine their strategy to duly consider the relevant regulatory framework and the legal issues that may arise in this new age. In particular, the creation of new virtual worlds populated by our avatars may arise issues concerning the processing of the user-avatar’s personal data collected in the Metaverse, as well as regarding the regulation of the contractual relationship that may be established within it. In particular, brands must ensure that users and their avatars benefit from the protection reserved to them as consumers also in the virtual B2C retailing world. It is now a consolidated principle that consumers who buy online, wherever they are and whatever brand they are buying from, can benefit from the protection granted to them by the laws of their country of residence that are more favorable to the consumer himself, even though they may differ from those applicable to the seller. In light of the above, the same rules shall also be applied in the Metaverse to protect avatar-consumers. Entering the Metaverse is also about marketing a fashion brand to a new community made up of players and their avatars meaning consumers who are immersed in the Metaverse and likely willing to connect virtually with beauty and fashion brands. These can include influencers who, even in their virtual form, promote the most famous brands, sponsoring their products and services (the so-called “virtual influencers”). By way of example, Meta’s platforms now host more than 200 virtual influencers, including Nefele, the twins Eli and Sofi, Shudu, Lil Miquela, Noonoouri, Rozy and the virtual streamer CodeMiko that is well-known on Twitch. There are already many fashion brands that are turning to these virtual influencers to advertise their products. Examples include Rihanna, who chose Shudu to promote her cosmetics brand Fenty Beauty, as well as Prada, Chanel, and Fendi that have been collaborating with the famous Lil Miquela for years. This means that new forms of commercial communication are developing and brands shall not forget to comply with the legal requirements for advertising even in the Metaverse. In fact, from a self-disciplinary perspective, the transparency obligations to comply with are those already set forth in the Digital Chart Regulation, whereby even virtual influencers are required to explicitly declare the advertising nature of their contents published online, where it is the result of commercial agreements, identifying it through hashtags such as #ad, #adv or #sponsored or, alternatively, #suppliedby or #giftedby in the case of goods or services received without a compensation for their advertising. In this regard, the Italian Istituto dell’Autodisciplina Pubblicitaria (IAP) and the Italian Antitrust Authority (AGCM) have reiterated the principle that not declaring the advertising nature of a content means violating the Code of Marketing Communication Self-Regulation and engaging in an unfair business practice. Thus, the fundamental principle underlying all advertising regulations is the prohibition of hidden advertising and the need for commercial communications to be transparent, clear and fair. In addition, it is necessary to make the unreal nature of these characters on the platforms used to convey advertising messages explicit, so that the user is aware that he or she is interacting with an avatar and not a human. Indeed, companies should aim to develop technologies that are both ethically and morally reliable in order to be useful for society and commensurate with human needs. Therefore, although the metaverse represents an opportunity to evolve the manner in which companies interact with their customer/user base, it is fundamental that the new virtual world is able to provide avatars with the same legal protections gained by consumers in the physical world.

James Hogg Obituary (1941 2022) Alamo CA Legacy.com
James Hogg Obituary (1941 – 2022) – Alamo, CA – Legacy.com https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/james-hogg-obituary-1941-2022-alamo-ca-legacy-com/ On August 3, 2022, James D. (Jim) Hogg died peacefully at his home in Alamo at age 80, with his daughters, Katie and Sylvie, and grandchildren at his side. The cause was metastatic melanoma. Born October 17, 1941 in Columbus, GA, Jim was the only child in an Air Force family, living in multiple locations on the East Coast, and in Germany, throughout his childhood. Later, the family moved to Fresno, CA, where Jim went to Bullard High School (go Knights!) and graduated in 1959. He headed back East for college, graduating from the George Washington University in D.C. with a B.A. in political science in 1963. Passionate about culture and politics, Jim relished the excitement of living in D.C. in the ’60s – the civil rights movement, the music, the arts. He was there in the crowd at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King Jr. delivered “I Have a Dream” in August 1963. Later, Jim moved back to California and earned a J.D. at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. One evening in the late 1960s, Jim attended a seamanship class at the Venice Yacht Club, and there he met his wife, Marilyn, whom he would call “Mate”-wife and best friend-for 49 years. (Of course they were meant to be, as Jim had shown up to the sailing class in his knee-weakening Ford Falcon wagon, while Marilyn had driven her zippy Alfa Romeo Spider.) Jim and Marilyn raised two daughters, Katie and Sylvie, with many moves along the way, including Santa Monica, Laguna Beach, Saudi Arabia, Walnut Creek, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Dubai, and Alamo. He lived in the Bay Area for most of his life, though, and was always proud to call it home. As an international business manager for energy projects for much of his professional career, Jim traveled frequently to the Middle East, Far East, and Southeast Asia. His silver Halliburton suitcase, emblazoned with exotic airport and hotel stickers from so many overseas voyages, remains an object of veneration. Deep-thinking and curious, Jim amassed a wealth of knowledge on topics far and wide by devouring biographies, history and political books, the Washington Post, the New York Times and the New Yorker. He was always incredibly well informed, and would own you in any kind of current events debate. He was also painstakingly precise, and you always knew where he stood (with a twinkle in his eye) about the “right” way to do everyday things, from parking to pronouncing “Adidas” to buying pasta (always De Cecco, people. Come on!) He had the savoir-faire and class of another time, and there was deliberate style to everything he did. And he had the BEST head of white hair you’ve ever seen. Photography (and all gear and gadgets pertaining thereto!) was a lifelong passion of Jim’s as well as a great excuse to travel to places far and wide – Antarctica, Svalbard, Europe, Central America, the Southwest, Yosemite and even his own Alamo backyard – to capture shots that became family icons. Jim was a huge fan of music, with major audiophile cred and tastes ranging from classical, jazz, folk, and world music to country, rock, and 80s pop. He kept an open, unsnobby mind about music and gamely blasted Lady Gaga and The Weeknd for his grandchildren. He loved German cars (the exquisite design and attention to detail!), the Warriors and the Giants, good shirts and jackets, and pho Tai no. 17 from Kevin’s in Walnut Creek. He stayed up late watching classic movies, offbeat TV, sports, and British mysteries. He appreciated good writing and interesting language, and kept a journal of cool phrases from favorite shows and books. Jim adored his yellow Lab, Posey, his steadfast companion for the last few years of his life, and saw her through orthopedic surgery and rehab even as he was undergoing debilitating cancer treatment. (Posey lives happily on with Jim’s daughter Katie and her chocolate Lab.) Though Jim was perfectly fine spending time alone (and often preferred it), and cultivated a gruff, “Pale Rider”-style countenance for family photos-when everyone else was, you know, smiling-all of that belied how kind and empathetic he was, and what a kick he got out of life. He had an easy charm and a gut-splitting sense of humor-a little dark, a little dry, always smart-and so many classic, signature lines. When you hung out with Jim, you always had fun and felt a little cooler for your time with him. More than anything, Jim was a fiercely loyal family man, a devoted and loving son, husband, father, and grandfather, and will forever be a towering model of character, integrity, generosity, and wisdom for his daughters. He treasured his family, celebrated everyone’s uniqueness, and believed in them. He was an encourager when you were trying something new or hard, and shared sincere delight when you related your adventures and exciting news. He loved openly: he told you how he felt and was affectionate and present. As a dad and grandfather (“Gentoo”), he taught with a light hand-whether it was learning to throw a baseball, flying a drone, or stumbling as an adult, he quietly observed, gave select and precise and kind comments and suggestions and let you learn it yourself. Jim was ever evolving in his interests, ever absorbing the world and culture around him, and never lost his sharpness and wit, even when the cancer had finally spread to the point where-to quote a Gordon Lightfoot song-he was “down and shit out of luck.” He is survived by his daughters, Katie and Sylvie; son-in-law Tim; grandchildren Quint, Gemma, Sam, and Finn; and dog, Posey. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn, and parents Clare and Robert Hogg. We will all miss him dearly. Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 22 to Sep. 23, 2022.

U.S. FDA Advisers Recommend Ferring’s Fecal Transplant Therapy – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-fda-advisers-recommend-ferrings-fecal-transplant-therapy-reuters/ A worker sweeps outside of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) headquarters in White Oak, Maryland, U.S., August 29, 2020. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Sept 22 (Reuters) – A panel of U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisers voted in favor of Ferring Pharmaceuticals’ fecal transplant-based therapy to reduce the recurrence of a bacterial infection, bringing the first therapy of its kind closer to approval. The therapy, Rebyota, works by replenishing the good gut bacteria through samples of microbes distilled from faeces of healthy donors, delivered through an enema in this case. Besides Switzerland-based Ferring, other companies including Seres Therapeutics (MCRB.O), which is developing an oral treatment, are working on similar therapies based on fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com Although antibiotics are the first-line of treatment for C. diff, which causes about half a million infections in the United States per year, they can also kill the good gut bacteria that prevent recurrences. Rebyota targets Clostridium difficile, or C. difficile, a superbug responsible for infections that can cause serious and life-threatening diarrhea. While no FMT therapy has yet been approved by the FDA, it has become popular for treating recurring C. diff infections under the agency’s “enforcement discretion” provision. Ferring says that access to FMT therapies, however, remains limited, and is not standardized. “Right now, patients can get an FMT from their roommates, or if this get approval, they can get a defined FMT that has undergone some sort of quality control,” said Eric Rubin, a panel member who voted “yes”. Still, the votes were not unanimous and some panel members highlighted a lack of clear data that showed effectiveness against C. diff. Enrollment challenges led Ferring, which gained the drug through its 2018 purchase of U.S.-based Rebiotix Inc, to scrap one of its two planned late-stage trials. “This is very limited data,” said Amanda Cohn, who voted in favor but urged the FDA to seek post-marketing data from Ferring if the drug is approved. Governors Races Take On New Prominence With Higher Stakes The Washington Post
Governors Races Take On New Prominence With Higher Stakes The Washington Post
Governor’s Races Take On New Prominence, With Higher Stakes – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/governors-races-take-on-new-prominence-with-higher-stakes-the-washington-post/ HUTCHINSON, Kan. — Governors’ races often are overshadowed by the fight for control of Congress during midterm elections. But this fall, the nation’s political future hangs just as much on governors’ mansions as it does on Capitol Hill. With abortion rights, immigration policies and democracy itself in the balance, both parties are entering the final weeks before the Nov. 8 election prepared to spend unprecedented amounts of money to win top state offices. Those elected will be in power for the 2024 election, when they could influence voting laws as well as certification of the outcome. And their powers over abortion rights increased greatly when the U.S. Supreme Court in June left the question to states to decide. “Governors’ races matter more than ever,” said North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, chair of the Democratic Governors Association, the group working to elect Democrats to lead states. For Democrats, Cooper said, governors “are often the last line of defense” on issues that have been turned over to states, including gun laws and voting rights in addition to abortion. That’s been especially true in places with Democratic governors and Republican-controlled legislatures, such as Wisconsin and Kansas — states both parties have made top targets for victory in November. Democrats are leading Republican candidates in two important battleground states with GOP-led statehouses, Michigan and Pennsylvania. Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly is the only Democratic governor running for reelection in a state carried by former President Donald Trump in 2020. The former legislator won the office in 2018 against a fiery conservative after running as a moderate who promoted bipartisanship. She now faces three-term state Attorney General Derek Schmidt, who has repeatedly tried to tie her to President Joe Biden and criticized her as too liberal for the red state. Schmidt’s campaign has been hurt, however, by a third-party bid from a conservative state lawmaker. During a debate at the Kansas State Fair this month, Schmidt portrayed Kelly’s position on abortion as too extreme, telling a crowd she supports abortion without restrictions. Kansas has been the unlikely site of Democratic hopes in regard to abortion rights. In August, Kansas voters overwhelmingly defeated a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would have allowed the GOP-controlled Legislature to greatly restrict or ban abortion. Kelly opposed the measure, though she has tried to focus her campaign elsewhere. Schmidt said he respects the outcome of the vote but that the abortion debate isn’t over. “What was not on the ballot was Governor Kelly’s position,” he said. Throughout nearly two decades in elective politics, Kelly has opposed nearly every restriction on abortion now in Kansas law. But asked about Schmidt’s characterization of her position on abortion, she said, “You know, I have never said that.” Kelly hasn’t emphasized abortion as an issue, though many Democrats think it would help her. Instead, she has been touting the state’s fiscal strength and her work to lure businesses and jobs. “Maybe I’m not flashy, but I’m effective,” she said at the end of the state fair debate. In Wisconsin, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers warns voters that democracy is on the ballot this fall and notes he has vetoed more bills than any governor in modern state history, including measures Republicans pushed to change how elections are conducted. Evers faces businessman Tim Michels, who was endorsed by Trump. Michels has claimed the 2020 presidential election was rigged — a lie Trump has pushed in an effort to overturn his loss to Biden — and supports changes to voting and election laws in the state, a perennial presidential battleground. Michels is among several Trump-backed nominees who emerged from sometimes brutal GOP primaries. In some cases, more moderate or establishment Republicans warned that the far-right pick endorsed by Trump would struggle to win in a general election. Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, chair of the Republican Governors Association, acknowledged the intraparty turmoil during a discussion at Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Policy last week. “We’re a divided nation right now, and it is very tribal. And much of that crept into this cycle,” said Ducey, who is term-limited. The RGA doesn’t endorse in primaries. But as governor, Ducey endorsed businesswoman Karrin Taylor Robson for Arizona’s GOP nomination for governor. She lost to former TV news anchor Kari Lake, who had Trump’s backing. Ducey and Trump have feuded over the governor’s refusal to cede to Trump’s wishes and overturn the 2020 election results in his state. Lake has said she would not have certified Biden’s victory, even though it has been affirmed by multiple reviews. Cooper said the DGA will be “leaning in hard” in Arizona as well as in a tight contest in Georgia, where GOP Gov. Brian Kemp is facing Democrat Stacey Abrams, a former state legislative leader who lost a close 2018 race to him. In the primary, Kemp easily defeated former Sen. David Perdue, who was endorsed by Trump. Both the Democratic and Republican governors associations entered 2022 having raised record amounts of money — over $70 million each — in what they say is a sign that voters are increasingly focused on state races. Cooper attributed some of the increased interest to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. The RGA is bullish about defending Republican governorships in Arizona and Georgia, and is heavily focused on picking up a handful of blue states in the West, including Oregon and New Mexico. At the top of the list is Nevada, where Clark County Sheriff Joe Lombardo is among Republicans’ most prized recruits this election cycle and is challenging Gov. Steve Sisolak. In Oregon, GOP hopes rest on an independent candidate siphoning enough support from the Democrat and allowing the Republican to pull out a victory. Democrats, meanwhile, are confident they will take back governorships in Massachusetts and Maryland, two blue states currently led by moderate Republicans, after far-right Republicans won their party’s nominations. Pennsylvania, a top presidential battleground, is another state where the GOP nominee could hurt Republicans’ chances in November. GOP voters chose Doug Mastriano from a crowded field, picking a Trump-backed candidate who opposes abortion rights without exceptions, spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and organized bus trips to the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, the day of the violent insurrection. He faces Democratic Attorney General Josh Shapiro. Asked about the race during the discussion at Georgetown, Ducey was blunt. “Another axiom that we have at the RGA is that we don’t fund lost causes, and we don’t fund landslides,” he said. In Michigan, a swing state where Trump and his allies also tried unsuccessfully to overturn his 2020 loss, Trump-backed nominee Tudor Dixon won a chaotic GOP primary. Democrats have repeatedly criticized Dixon for her stance against abortion, including in cases of rape or incest. A measure to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution also will be on the November ballot, and Democrats are hoping it will help their candidates. First-term Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has millions more in her campaign fund than Dixon, but said after an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show that she was taking nothing for granted. “This is Michigan, and it’s always tight in Michigan,” she said. ___ Burnett reported from Chicago. Enjoy the crisp autumn weather while visiting Middletown’s Newport Vineyards, view some local wildlife at the Norman Bird Sanctuary, tackle some picturesque trails at the Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge, or feel the cool breeze of autumn at Pebble Beach. 5 Bristol Named after England’s town of Bristol, this Rhode Island seaport offers a variety of attractions, whether on land or sea! To see breathtaking sights of the Maritime—while getting some serious workout regime—rent a bike and cycle through the East Bay Bike Path, which can conveniently take cyclers from various Bristol attractions, including its downtown core. Otherwise, hiking is a great way to explore the fall foliage at Bristol, especially at Colt State Park! 4 New Shoreham Also known as Block Island, New Shoreham is the destination for travelers seeking breathtaking coastal views of the Atlantic, hiking excursions, and cozy small-town vibes. When in New Shoreham this season, visit the 150-year-old North Light Lighthouse or enjoy the peaceful sounds of crashing waves at the Frederick J. Benson Town Beach. Sitting on a small island in the region, travelers will have to take a ferry from Point Judith in Narragansett to get to New Shoreham. 3 Narragansett Narragansett offers some of the best surfing spots in New England, perfect for warmer weather. However, during the colder months, there are many other things to look forward to in this Rhode Island town! Often a favorite vacation destination for Rhode Island locals, travelers can easily book a stay at one of Narragansett’s hotels or inns, which conveniently overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Also, eateries—such as the Coast Guard House Restaurant—offer incredible views of the Maritime coastline! 2 Jamestown Jamestown provides a charm that can’t be missed this season. Stay a couple of nights at a cozy bed and breakfast or at an inn that overlooks the Newport Bridge. This coastal gem has a ton of landmarks just waiting to be explored, including Taylor Point, the Windmill Hill Historic District, the Jamestown Historical Society, and the Beavertail Lighthouse at the Beavertail State Park. 1 Westerly Being the southernmost town in Rhode Island, Westerly sits near the border with Connecticut. While in town, enjoy the fall foliage at Wilcox Park or go shopping at Westerly’s downtown core, which also includes attractions like Living Sharks Museum, the United Theatre, and the Tapped Apple Cidery and Winery. Outside the town core, tourists who visit Westerly during the weekends during the fall season can head to the Atlantic Beach Park for some ice cream or scenic sites of the Maritime coastline.

Rendering of the planned EPCAL development. / Courtesy of bld Architecture By: David Winzelberg September 22, 2022 One of the region’s largest-ever economic development projects is awaiting the transfer of 1,644 acres from one Riverhead agency to another.  On Wednesday, the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency accepted an application from Calverton Aviation & Technology to transfer the property in the Enterprise Park at Calverton from Riverhead’s Community Development Agency to its IDA, which would clear the way for CAT to finally close on its $40 million acquisition of the EPCAL land.  Once the land sale closes, CAT, which is headed by Triple Five Worldwide Group, is poised to begin its planned sprawling corporate campus on about 600 acres of the property, which will include tenants involved in industrial aviation, aerospace, transportation, technology and logistics, among others, according to documents presented to the IDA.  While the property is zoned to accommodate 9.8 million square feet of development, the purchase agreement with the town calls for CAT to build a minimum of 1 million square feet of development at EPCAL within the first five years. For that first phase of the project, the developer will invest more than $200 million, employ 235 construction personnel and create an additional 117 jobs, according to CAT’s attorney Peter Curry of Farrell Fritz, who added that the project will require IDA incentives to assist in the development.  According to an economic study presented to the IDA, tenants in the first phase of the development are projected to produce a $95 million payroll, with an average salary of $89,500. The overall economic impact of the first phase is estimated to add $167 million to the local economy.  “This milestone action by the IDA sets the stage for the next phase of EPCAL’s economic development, one that will create the Silicon Valley of the east,” Justin Ghermezian, a principal of CAT, said in a company statement. “To meet that responsibility, we bring decades of development experience to the challenge, committing considerable resources to ensure that this park will be an enormous economic success for the Town of Riverhead, our company, and, most importantly, the residents of the town.”  The developer is setting aside about 1,000 acres of “environmentally sensitive land” in its acquisition to conserve it. In addition, CAT will be allocating funds to provide new lighting on EPCAL ball fields as well as repair portions of the property’s 10,000-foot runway to ensure aviation activities can continue as required by future tenants.  It’s been more than two decades since the town took title to the 2,900-acre Calverton property, last used by the U.S. Navy and Northrop Grumman for testing F14s and other military aircraft. Besides the portion to be preserved as open space to protect the region’s environmental health, the balance of the property was always earmarked for economic development, which despite fielding several ill-fated proposals over the years, Riverhead is now in a position to deliver.    × Enjoy This Free Article We Have 2 More For You All You Need To Do Is Register To Receive Your 2 Additional Free Articles

2022 Presidents Cup Scores, Results: Live Coverage, Standings, Golf Updates, Schedule For Day 1 On Thursday – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/2022-presidents-cup-scores-results-live-coverage-standings-golf-updates-schedule-for-day-1-on-thursday-cbs-sports/ The 2022 Presidents Cup has arrived. After a long year of player-league alignment controversies, roster sorting by the captains and chatter about what to do to spice this event up in the future, there is actually golf to be played. While many are predicting a United States blowout, the magic of team golf at this level is that it almost always feels closer than it is for longer than it should. That wasn’t the case in 2017 when the U.S. side absolutely waxed the International team, but hopefully, with an amalgamation of big hitters, young stars and an us-against-the-world attitude, we get a Presidents Cup that’s at least interesting through most of Sunday’s singles matches. If you’re looking for where the event could turn, you don’t need to look past the first day. The U.S. has owned the International side in foursome matches over the last 15 years, doing the majority of their damage within this particular format. If that happens again — there’s no reason to believe it won’t — the red, white and blue will likely be off to the races. 2022 Presidents Cup scores, results Day 1 — Foursomes 1 Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele 1:05 p.m. Adam Scott & Hideki Matsuyama 2 Jordan Spieth & Justin Thomas 1:17 p.m. Corey Conners & Sungjae Im 3 Jordan Spieth & Justin Thomas 1:29 p.m. K.H. Lee & Tom Kim 4 Sam Burns & Scottie Scheffler 1:41 p.m. Cameron Davis & Si Woo Kim 5 Tony Finau & Max Homa 1:53 p.m. Mito Pereira & Taylor Pendrith CBS Sports will be with you the entire way updating this story with the latest from the first day of the Presidents Cup. Keep it locked here for live scores, updates and highlights. See New Posts Pinned Pinned Pinned Cantlay, Schauffele turning up the heat Winning four of the last five holes, the American leadoff batters are now 4-up through seven. The international team as a whole has yet to card a birdie — although that will change momentarily — and it is catching up to them. Matsuyama and Scott are against the ropes and will need to get going if they want to see the middle of the back nine. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Early matches going the way of the U.S. The internationals needed a big effort from the first two matches and it has yet to materialize. The Americans lead in both matches with Schaffuele and Cantlay commanding a 3-up lead through six holes and Spieth and Thomas 2-up through five. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Americans put a flag on the leaderboard Courtesy of a three-putt bogey from Matsuyama and Scott, the first match of the day has turned red through three. Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are 4-0-0 in their foursomes career and are well positioned to add to their lead as they face a great birdie opportunity on the par-3 fourth. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Spieth and Thomas avoid early deficit Able to get up-and-down from in front of the green, the American tied the opening hole against Sungjae Im and Corey Conners. There has yet to be any blood drawn as the third match just teed off with Cameron Young hitting a booming drive over the trees.  Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Foursome strategy Keep in mind who is teeing off on the first hole. Those who wield the driver on the opening hole will have the opportunity to strike the first putt on 14 of the holes. This makes sense when looking at Patrick Cantlay and Adam Scott teeing off first to kick off the Presidents Cup — both are great putters despite the stigma around Scott. Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Pinned Homa and Finau wrap up Day 1 This is a fun duo that could provide fireworks. They take on Taylor Pendrith and Mito Pereira which I find to be an odd pairing. If Pereira discovers his ball-striking from the PGA Championship — game on. However, it has abandoned him since the summer and while Pendrith is playing well, the 1-2 punch of Homa and Finau is likely to be too much to fend off. See More

After The Bell: The Metaverse Is Something To Watch Daily Maverick
After The Bell: The Metaverse Is Something To Watch Daily Maverick
After The Bell: The Metaverse Is Something To Watch –… – Daily Maverick https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/after-the-bell-the-metaverse-is-something-to-watch-daily-maverick/ The metaverse. What do we think of it? Is it meaningful at all? Ordinary life is hard enough; how difficult can imaginary life be? You can often tell when there is a lot of hype about a subject – its proponents claim that this or that trend is a BILLION-dollar industry.  The BILLION is always emphasised. But you know, toothpicks are also a BILLION-dollar industry. Yet, when it comes to the metaverse, it’s not quite that easy to dismiss.  Whatever you might think of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, he has been an extraordinary investor, recognising early on the value of Instagram and WhatsApp. When Facebook, Meta’s predecessor, bought Instagram, he paid $1-billion, which was generally thought at the time to be certifiably insane. At the time, the company had 17 employees. Instagram now constitutes about 44% of meta’s income – or about $10-BILLION dollars a QUARTER. And now Zuckerberg has become so enamoured of the metaverse that he changed the name of his company to indicate this is definitely the direction the company is going. Not only that, but the company has invested $10-billion, sorry, BILLION, so far in the effort.  Zuckerberg has told shareholders that the effort would bleed capital for the next three to five years, and some products wouldn’t be ready for 15 years. Ok, so this is long term. But why is he so confident? Business Maverick last week held a live event to discuss the metaverse, which was hosted by my colleague Ray Mahlaka. The speakers were Bright Khumalo of Vestact Asset Management and Richard Frank, chief technology officer at Flow Communication. You can catch the event here. The metaverse, as we all know without having to Google it, is a network of 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection which you access through a virtual-reality headset. There are in fact multiple metaverses – some for gaming, some for personal interaction, some for exercise and physical gaming. Visit Daily Maverick’s home page for more news, analysis and investigations The whole point of the metaverse is that it’s immersive; you are completely contained in the world. When you physically look around, you look around in the world. For some purposes, the utility of the metaverse is obvious; if you are playing a computer game, it’s just more fun if you are physically in it. For others, the utility is a bit more obscure. How much difference does it make to attend a work function in the metaverse rather than on Zoom? In some ways, the utility is recognisable, if a touch gimmicky. Meeting colleagues to brainstorm and interact in the metaverse might be more valuable than working remotely or even, in certain circumstances, meeting in person. Or it might be just an extra layer of complexity and irritation. You can see why the idea is interesting for Meta. One of the most popular virtual-reality headsets is the Meta Quest, which launches the company into the world of physical products, the avenue which has created so much value for Apple. Meta is also heavily invested in personal and group interaction in Facebook, where there is an urgency since the platform is starting to look a bit dated. You can see the attraction. Yet, this will not be a single-player dominated space, as Facebook largely was and, in many ways, still is. Microsoft, which has always had a strong gaming aspect, also has a headset and gaming applications. The competition between these two giants is ironically one of the things that underpins this unusual and varied subsector. Business Maverick’s event was sponsored by property group Lew Geffen, and it’s in the property sector that some wonderful and wacky stuff is happening in the metaverse. Virtual land sales hit a record high of $500-million in 2021, and were expected to reach more than $1-billion, sorry, $1-BILLION, in 2022. In one of the metaverses, Sandbox, a property company called Republic Realm said in June 2021 that it had bought a 16-acre plot for close to $1-million. Only five months later, prices for virtual land reached a new high. But sadly, they then collapsed this year, and are now down by three-quarters. Only this week, Nedbank announced that, in a collaboration with Africarare, Africa’s first metaverse, it has secured a 12×12 village in Ubuntuland on which to establish its presence as the first African financial services organisation to enter the metaverse.  The press release said Africarare “was highly sought after by companies and individuals wishing to capitalise on the multiple opportunities presented by the metaverse”. Hmm. Could be fun, but you do have to wonder. The press release said “early settlers” in Ubuntuland include MTN, World Data Lab and M&C Saatchi Abel. Not sure about that terminology, but whatever. One key question is whether people will part with their money in the metaverse, and for what. Clearly, for some things they will, like participating in games and sports. But would you pay the equivalent of the $500, more or less, it now costs to attend a Rolling Stones concert if you are attending virtually? To be honest, I wouldn’t. But would some people out there? You know, I think they would, particularly if they were able to get up close and move around. The metaverse is clearly something to watch. BM/DM

Twin Falls Canal Company To End Water Delivery Oct 14 – News Radio 1310 KLIX https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/twin-falls-canal-company-to-end-water-delivery-oct-14-news-radio-1310-klix/ TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KLIX)-Irrigators with the Twin Falls Canal Company will see water shut off mid-October. General Manager Jay Barlogi announced the headgates at Milner Dam will be closed on October 14. It’ll take several days before water stops flowing through the canal system. The Canal Company asks irrigators to inform their ditch riders if they are done using water so headgates can be closed to help conserve water in the reservoir. Barlogi wrote the reservoir system heading into the winter is low, “The Upper Snake River Reservoir System currently contains only 15% of its overall capacity. The two reservoir systems that the Twin Falls Canal Company hold storage rights in are American Falls Reservoir at 5% of total capacity and Jackson Lake Reservoir at 19% of total capacity.” He said at this point its hard to predict what the 2023 water year will be like, but given the current storage capacity they’ll need an above normal snowpack this winter. “We also know that we need to manage our water supply as efficiently as possible at the end of the current season to help with next year,” said Barlogi. Once the irrigation season is over winter maintenance will begin. The Worst Movies Based On Good TV Shows Sometimes horrible movies happen to bad television series. Here are the worst offenders.

Delio’s staking services expand its existing crypto-bank offerings, which include lending, deposits and deposit accounts, the company announced Thursday. The new service offering is powered by blockchain infrastructure provider Blockdaemon, which provides a suite of institutional staking products. Delio representative James Jung also clarified that the firm also plans “to offer a variety of crypto asset financial services for users outside of Korea.” Founded in 2017, Blockdaemon achieved unicorn status last year after securing $155 million in a Series B funding round. U.S. Drops Charges Against Massachusetts Judge In Immigration Arrest Case – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-drops-charges-against-massachusetts-judge-in-immigration-arrest-case-reuters/ Massachusetts District Court Judge Shelley Joseph (2nd L) stands beside her lawyer, Thomas Hoopes as he speaks to reporters outside of the federal courthouse in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S., April 25, 2019. REUTERS/Nate Raymond Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com BOSTON, Sept 22 (Reuters) – U.S. prosecutors on Thursday said they reached an agreement to drop criminal charges filed during the Trump administration against a Massachusetts judge accused of impeding a federal immigration arrest of a defendant in her courtroom. Federal prosecutors said they had agreed to dismiss the obstruction charges filed against Newton District Court Judge Shelley Joseph in exchange for the judge referring herself to a state commission tasked with investigating judicial misconduct. Prosecutors are also dropping obstruction charges against her former courtroom deputy, Wesley MacGregor, who entered into a deferred prosecution agreement to resolve a remaining perjury count. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com The announcement marked the end of a high-profile case brought during former Republican President Donald Trump’s administration that Joseph’s lawyers and supporters long called politically motivated. “This was a patently political indictment, blindly grounded in prosecutorial ambition,” Thomas Hoopes, Joseph’s lawyer, said. The case was filed in 2019 during clashes between Trump’s administration and local governments that resisted his immigration crackdown and courthouse arrests by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. Prosecutors claimed Joseph and MacGregor in 2018 helped a previously-deported state court defendant evade being detained by an ICE agent by allowing him leave their Newton courthouse through a rear door. Then-U.S. Attorney Andrew Lelling, a Trump appointee, first brought the case. His successor, Rachael Rollins, an appointee of Democratic President Joe Biden, as Boston’s district attorney sued to block immigration arrests at courthouses after Joseph’s indictment. Due to Rollins’ conflict, the case was reassigned to Rhode Island U.S. Attorney Zachary Cunha, leaving him to decide whether to move forward after a federal appeals court in February declined to toss the indictment. “I have concluded that the interests of justice are best served by review of this matter before the body that oversees the conduct of Massachusetts state court judges, rather than in a continued federal criminal prosecution,” Cunha said. Under Thursday’s agreement, Joseph made certain factual admissions that the Massachusetts Commission on Judicial Conduct can consider when deciding to recommend that the state’s top court discipline the judge. Seminole Heads To Venice In Battle Of Last Two Class 8A Champions – News-Press https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/seminole-heads-to-venice-in-battle-of-last-two-class-8a-champions-news-press/ Sanford-Seminole, the No. 1 team in Class 4M, already has wins against two of the top-ranked teams in Class 4S and will be looking for the hat trick at Venice. Seminole (4-0) travels to Venice (1-2, No. 4 Class 4S) on Friday in a matchup of the last two teams to state titles in Class 8A before the metro and suburban split this season. Seminole vs. Venice was the game many expected to see in the Class 8A state championship last fall, but the Seminoles fell to eventual state runner-up Apopka in overtime of the regional championship. Seminole’s resume this season includes wins against Kissimmee-Osceola and Treasure Coast. Venice, which is coming off a loss against national power St. Frances (Md.), narrowly beat Naples in Week 2 and lost on a late touchdown to Miami Northwestern in the season opener. According to MaxPreps, Venice plays the second-toughest schedule in the state this season. The game features several top senior recruits, including Venice edge rusher Damon Wilson, Venice defensive back Elliot Washington, Seminole wide receiver Darren Lawrence and Seminole quarterback Luke Rucker. 9 Tips For Cruising The Mediterranean With Costa TravelAwaits
9 Tips For Cruising The Mediterranean With Costa TravelAwaits
9 Tips For Cruising The Mediterranean With Costa – TravelAwaits https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/9-tips-for-cruising-the-mediterranean-with-costa-travelawaits/ Costa Cruises invited me on almost back-to-back European cruises, and I learned a lot. I visited some of the most desirable and wonderful cruise ports (Rome, Barcelona, Istanbul, Athens), and I was also one of under 25 people onboard from the United States. Talk about an immersive vacation! I’ve cruised a lot, and never had I been in situations where English was not the primary language or not spoken at all and guess what? It was actually cool not having the upper hand for a change. Here are nine tips for cruising the Mediterranean with Costa that will ease your apprehension and help you get the most out of your cruise vacation. Barcelona, Spain Photo credit: Catarina Belova / Shutterstock.com 1. Expect Full Immersion To reiterate. Costa Cruises will take you a bit out of your comfort zone if you are from the U.S. You will be fully immersed in a group of like-minded cruise-loving multicultural passengers, where there will sometimes be a language barrier. Of course, you won’t have trouble finding menus and newsletters in English, but often, activities are only in Italian (this is an Italian cruise line) and French. There are also a handful of other languages, too.  On my cruises, Costa was just starting itineraries, and they hadn’t been back to work after COVID for very long. The ships were only running at about 33-60 percent capacity, which meant that the cruise tours and excursions were limited. Remember that Costa cruise excursions are in different languages, more so than any other cruise I’ve been on. Once, I had to take a port excursion in Barcelona that was in two different languages, neither of which was in English. I had been there before and just wanted to get better pictures, so I took my chances and went anyway. One of the two tour guides spoke a bit of English, so he could advise when and where to meet during our free time. I couldn’t understand any of the narrated details, but I got what I came for. Another time, we had three different languages on our bus and tour. That meant the times spent in churches and points of interest were longer than expected, as the guide had to switch hats and explain the scenery to each group, but I took that time to wander around on my own and take pictures. 2. We’re Not In Kansas Anymore Being an American on a European-based cruise ship means adjusting to things the way they do them in said country, which in this case is Italy. Dinner times in the main dining room were 7:00 p.m. for the early seating and 9:30 p.m. for the late seating. The first night I went to the main dining room with a group of other cruise friends; we didn’t leave until almost midnight. I’m an American. We eat around 6 p.m., so that took some getting used to.  Pro Tip: There is no dinner buffet on Costa Cruises. The reason being is that Italians prefer to make the evening meal all about family and sitting down together as an experience, so to speak, rather than quick service.  There are lots of other restaurant options, many of which require an additional fee. We dined at our favorite restaurants (namely Heineken Star Club & Bistro) at earlier times on most nights. Nightlife is a big part of Italian culture, so expect the ship to get rockin’ around 11 p.m. and last until the wee hours of the night. That doesn’t mean loud, obnoxious drunks running around; quite the opposite. There were people of all ages (some even old enough to be my grandmother) dancing and having a grand time. Watching the Europeans enjoy the ship’s activities, DJs, dance parties, and festivities was a beautiful thing. Pro Tip: I never had trouble understanding the Costa staff, nor did they have difficulty understanding me. I did encounter someone in the reception area who didn’t speak English, but she kindly and quickly got a colleague to answer my question. The Trevi Fountain Photo credit: Melody Pittman 3. Add On The Pre Or Post Cruise If you are flying from the United States, it is a long way to Europe. I’m on the West Coast and flew to Rome once and Istanbul another. That is an 18-22 hour day, depending on flight connections. I highly recommend you add on Costa’s pre and post-cruise days. Not only will it give you time to sightsee on your own in the embarkation city, but the price for the extension is reasonable. This goes for after the cruise, as well. In Rome, we disembarked at 8 a.m. But, if you were staying for the post-cruise, you could hang out on the ship and enjoy the food, pool, and activities before being bussed to the fantastic hotel. We did have to leave our stateroom, though. The hotel was within walking distance of the Vatican, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon. Transfers were included.  We didn’t leave the ship until around 1 p.m. on our Istanbul disembarkation. It was fantastic having Costa Venezia almost all to ourselves. We had complimentary meals, our beverage cards still worked, and we just enjoyed the scenery. I felt it added some much-needed relaxation before our taxing trip back home. Main dining room – Costa Venezia Photo credit: Melody Pittman 4. Book Your Restaurant Reservations Early Costa Cruises include the main dining room and buffet with your cruise. The other restaurants (there is an abundance) have a fee associated with them. It could be $5-$10 for a great meal in the Heineken Bar, $2 for the fries my daughter and I were addicted to daily, $3 for a bowl of gelato, a nutella and banana crepe, or $25-$30 for a four-course hibachi style meal. I recommend you research the Costa Cruises website (or go to my website for a Costa food and restaurant guide) and check Cruise Critic to see what’s available. You can book some restaurants online before your cruise. If that isn’t an option, book them as soon as you board the ship. That way, you can be sure to eat at all the places you want to try; they will fill up.  Thermal pool Photo credit: Melody Pittman 5. Familiarize Yourself With The Thermal Spa Some people like me are spa junkies, and others shy away from the spa. If you aren’t familiar with the thermal suite, you should check it out. There will be a free walk-through on the day of embarkation. Pro Tip: New to the spa? A hot stone massage is good for first-timers.  You can purchase a day or a week-long thermal suite pass to enjoy its offerings in the Solemio Spa. The amenities include heated mosaic chaise loungers (a personal fave), rainfall showers, a fabulous sauna and steam room, a huge thermal pool, and… get this… a snow room. Snow room Photo credit: Melody Pittman Yep, my Costa Toscana cruise ship had a snow room with temperatures below freezing, where you could step inside to get cooled off instantly. I’m not a fan of cold, wintery weather at any time, but for some reason, after being in the hot thermal pool every day, it was a refreshing way to end my spa day. Can you imagine how incredible the photos were? I can’t remember the exact cost, though I think it was $50 per day or $199 per week-long cruise. However, they had a special deal where you could get the weekly pass and spa service for $130. I always schedule a facial or body treatment, which is nearly the same price, so this was a major score for me. Pro Tip: The thermal pool and heated lounger area have floor-to-ceiling windows, an excellent place for ultimate relaxation and watching the world go by. 6. Using The Costa App Costa has a snazzy smartphone app to keep track of your cruise days, reservations, and such. However, the app was unavailable for those from the United States during my cruises. Fingers crossed they will get that fixed soon. 7. Bring A Converter Our cruise stateroom had USB plug-ins and European outlets (220-240) but no 110-volt outlets (standard American). Luckily, we brought a plug adapter converter from home. Istanbul, Türkiye Photo credit: Melody Pittman 8. Board At Multiple Locations You can board Costa ships at multiple locations for the same cruise. Costa uses a ferry schedule, which is the term to describe making your round-trip cruise from multiple ports that the itinerary visits. So, if you’d rather spend more time in Naples or Savona, you could do the Mediterranean cruise I did from Rome, but board and disembark there. The Costa Venezia in Türkiye Photo credit: idiltoffolo / Shutterstock.com 9. Bring The Family Multigenerational cruises are the best; I’ve experienced them and made family memories for years. Costa has the Squok (the name of the kid programs) Restaurant for families traveling with children. Though I didn’t have my granddaughter on these cruises, I would have loved a family outing that catered to her age group. Fun Fact: Carnival Cruises is bringing the Costa Venezia ship to North America for cruises sailing from New York starting in 2023. The Costa Firenze will follow in 2024 for Long Beach itineraries.

The average Joe can’t function without coffee, survey says    A new survey has revealed that three in four US coffee consumers report being unable to go a single day without coffee. Market research firm OnePoll surveyed 2,000 US coffee consumers for confectionery company Kinder Bueno and found respondents averaged two coffee beverages a day. Nearly half of those surveyed (45%) consider coffee as more popular across the country as a result of remote working and overtime. Additionally, 54% reported their productivity depends largely on whether they have had a coffee or not.    Lavazza cements museum ties with statue acquisition     The Lavazza Group has strengthened its commitment to the art world after acquiring Giacomo Gianotti’s bronze statue La Petroleuse Vaincue for the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, France. The Italian sculpture, from 1887, portrays a ‘woman of the people’ bound in ropes, recalling the role of women in the revolutionary Paris Commune of 1871. The acquisition coincides with Lavazza Group joining the Paris museum’s community of art patrons.    Julius Meinl puts down roots in sustainable coffee     As part of its wider ambition to make the coffee value chain more sustainable, Austrian coffee roaster Julius Meinl is collaborating with conservation charity the Jane Goodall Institute to plant thousands of trees in Tanzania. Julius Meinl said a tree will be planted on behalf of every hospitality outlet that chooses to serve its responsibly sourced coffee on World Coffee Day on 1 October 2022. Founded in Vienna in 1862, Julius Meinl is one of the world’s oldest coffee roasters and is present in more than 70 countries.    Bad Ass Coffee lightens the load for Hawaii’s donkeys     Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii has announced its new Give A Hoof programme, which it says pays tribute to its namesake – the donkeys of Kona, Hawaii. The chain, which currently operates 30 stores across the US, has partnered with two non-profits, Longhopes Donkey Shelter and Leilani Farm Sanctuary, to support donkeys in rescue shelters. Starting on 19 September 2022, Bad Ass Coffee of Hawaii’s Donkey Week, the company has pledged $1 from every sale of its ‘Be A Badass’ shirts and travel mugs to support a donkey in need.     Oatly pours funding into US coffee sustainability projects    Swedish oatmilk maker Oatly has launched the second iteration of its Big Idea Grant for Coffee initiative, which seeks to fund and support US coffee companies with their sustainability projects. Oatly has pledged up to $400,000 in grant funding for the initiative with applications open until 28 October 2022. Winners from the inaugural grant in 2021 include California-based Academic Coffee, which converted their parking spaces to host pop-ups that feature local small businesses, and Vermont-based 1A Coffee which now powers all its operations via solar energy.

Detroit Lions Mailbag: Thoughts On Goff Hockenson And Early-Season Surprises Detroit News
Detroit Lions Mailbag: Thoughts On Goff Hockenson And Early-Season Surprises Detroit News
Detroit Lions Mailbag: Thoughts On Goff, Hockenson And Early-Season Surprises – Detroit News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/detroit-lions-mailbag-thoughts-on-goff-hockenson-and-early-season-surprises-detroit-news/ Welcome to another weekly Detroit Lions mailbag. Let’s see what’s on your mind this week: ► Question: T.J. Hockenson and Jared Goff seem to be out of sync, what gives? — @roarrestored1 ► Q: At what point should we be concerned over Hockenson not taking that next step in his career? — @DirtyJerzFinest ► Answer: I don’t think the connection between Detroit’s quarterback and top tight end merits much immediate concern. Hockenson has been targeted 14 times and caught seven passes. He’s also been assessed two drops. Assuming he hangs on to those, you’re talking about a catch rate of 64.3%, which is only a touch off his career number of 65.6% coming into the season. The drops, in general, are not great, but every professional athlete hits lulls. If Hockenson’s hands continue to be an issue several weeks deeper into the season, it merits a deeper dive into what’s going wrong, including any changes in routes he’s being asked to run within the new scheme implemented by coordinator Ben Johnson. On the grander front, Hockenson’s looming contract extension continues to be an interesting conversation. He’s proven to be an above-average pass-catching option during his career, and while the blocking has lagged behind, he’s committed to improvement and there have been some noticeable strides being made in that department. The bar keeps getting reset with several of the league’s young tight ends scoring extensions. Most recently, Dawson Knox netted a four-year pact from Buffalo worth an average of $13 million per season and more than $31 million guaranteed. That’s with career-highs of 49 receptions and only slightly-better blocking, according to Pro Football Focus. So Hockenson’s eventual deal is still tracking slightly above that, even if his production stays at pre-established levels. ► Q: Should Lions fans be encouraged by Goff’s play or skeptical that it may inevitably lead to a cap-monopolizing extension? What are the future ramifications of him playing well this season? — @NoExcuseCharlie ► A: Like every conversation regarding whoever quarterbacks of the Lions, it depends on which camp you reside in. There are those who are plenty confident Goff possesses enough ability to be the franchise’s long-term solution and an alternative group that doesn’t, despite his recent string of success dating back to last season. His resume speaks for itself, with two Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl appearance. I don’t need to tell you he can do it, because he’s already done it. But to suggest there’s no possible way for the Lions to upgrade the position would be equally naïve. For as good as Goff has been to start the year — posting a passer rating over 100 — he’s still having issues with his downfield accuracy, he’s putting too many passes in harm’s way and he doesn’t offer the threat of mobility that so many of the young quarterbacks entering the league do. Ultimately, the Lions will have to make a decision, but there isn’t a huge rush. Goff’s under contract through 2024, so they can comfortably sit back and continue to assess the situation through the late stages of next season, assuming the rebuild remains on track. Regardless, I’m sure we’ll be talking about it plenty between now and the next draft. ► Q: Without somehow trading back for Darius Slay, how can the Lions best replicate Philadelphia’s success in containing Justin Jefferson? — @evanderjoseph ► A: It’s going to have to be a joint effort because we’ve seen nothing to suggest the Lions will have any of their cornerbacks travel with Jefferson, who regularly lines up on both sides on the outside, as well as getting plenty of work from the slot. That means Jeff Okudah, Mike Hughes and Amani Oruwariye, if healthy, will all draw snaps covering the Vikings star wideout. Minnesota has enough weapons, including the always-lethal Adam Thielen, that you can’t double Jefferson every snap, but I would anticipate the Lions will have linebackers cheating to help on some underneath routes, as well as routinely rolling the safety to that side to help bracket Jefferson. ► Q: Do you think this offense is really this good or are they overachieving? — @OldSchoolSport7 ► A: It sounds funny saying it, but you can make an argument they’re underachieving, with how many points they’ve left on the field the first two games. Of course, we should understand that we’ll rarely see that near-perfect level of execution, but we now know the potential is there for a 40- or even 50-point outburst if everything clicks. Obviously, the injuries along the offensive line present significant concerns. Without Frank Ragnow or Jonah Jackson close to full strength, opponents will increasingly find ways to expose those cracks in Detroit’s armor. That said, the Lions have a ton of weapons at the skill positions and I have little doubt they can be a top-10 scoring offense the rest of the way. ► Q: Where did John Cominsky and Chris Board come from? I don’t remember them from the preseason at all, but both have been making plays. — @MichaelFickII ► A: The preseason is weird like that, with a greater focus on fundamentals over anything else. The ability to open up the call sheet when game-planning in the regular season has brought both the players you mention to the forefront because of their ability to contribute on the pass rush. Unfortunately, it’ll be a minute before we see Cominsky again. He suffered a hand injury requiring surgery and he will be sidelined indefinitely. As for Board, he’ll continue to log between 10-20 snaps per game and should continue to offer value both in coverage and as a blitzer, where he’s been highly disruptive to start the year. As for where they came from, Cominsky was a waiver claim after he was cut by Atlanta this spring. Big, athletic, with a non-stop motor, he was a hot commodity, with eight teams putting in a claim. Board spent the last four years with the Baltimore Ravens after going undrafted out of North Dakota State. A key special-teamer for the Ravens, he had seen his defensive role steadily grow before coming to Detroit. ► Q: Do you think the Lions would seriously consider replacing Goff with Lamar Jackson next season should he become available? — @DoctorOSP ► A: I’ve learned to never outright dismiss a possibility, but it’s difficult to see this scenario happening. The Ravens are probably going to slap a non-exclusive franchise tag on the QB, giving them the right to match any offer. And if they decline, the signing team has to send two first-round draft picks as part of the agreement. With Deshaun Watson’s $230 million guaranteed as the reported floor for negotiations with Jackson, you have to meet those demands, be willing to part with a pair of highly valuable draft assets and cut Goff, eating another $10 million cap hit. It’s a fun fantasy, but tough to see working in reality. ► Q: With the Lions’ success blitzing this year coupled with Cousins’ lack of success against the blitz, can we expect a heavy blitzing scheme this week? — @Markrollnfl ► A: The Lions have blitzed quite a bit, in both of their games, but it was definitely more effective against the Commanders than it was in the opener versus the Eagles. Still, Carson Wentz completed 10 of 17 throws for 91 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions when blitzed, while only being sacked once. But you’re right, Kirk Cousins struggled with the blitz on Monday night, and even if he hadn’t, I believe sending an extra rusher, particularly on third down, is part of coordinator Aaron Glenn’s identity. The Lions rank fourth in the NFL, blitzing 41.7% of the time, and there’s no reason to think that doesn’t continue this week. ► Q: How is Jameson Williams’ current rehab coming along? Is it still more likely that we’ll see him play after the bye week or is there a chance that we’ll see him get a few snaps in week 5? — @notishiiii ► A: While we haven’t checked in on Williams the last week, everything was progressing as expected throughout the offseason program. But while he is eligible to join the lineup in Week 5, it’s going to be a while longer than that. At the earliest, I could see the team opening up the rookie receiver’s practice window after the bye week (first practice, Oct. 19), and I’d fully expect the Lions to utilize the full three-week acclimation window to get his body right before activating him. All that to say, I’d pencil in a November debut for Williams. ► Q: Any idea why Austin Bryant didn’t play last week? — @FriedrichsJk ► A: When everyone is healthy, Bryant is behind Julian Okwara on the depth chart. Bryant being scratched was a reflection of Okwara finally being medically cleared to return after suffering a hamstring strain during training camp. Based on Dan Campbell’s comments this week, it sounds like Bryant is in line for another opportunity, helping replace Cominsky. ► Q: Now that the Lions are showing their abilities, is it time to cool it on the trickery and long shots? — @rollc2000 ► A: I don’t think you have to abandon gadget plays just because the team is getting more talented.
