US Judge Demands Tether Comes Up With Records To Show It Has Claimed Cash Reserves – Cryptonews https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/us-judge-demands-tether-comes-up-with-records-to-show-it-has-claimed-cash-reserves-cryptonews/ Source: Adobe/dennizn As part of the legal proceedings related to a market manipulation case that dates back to 2019, Katherine Polk Failla, a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, has ordered Tether’s parent company to provide financial records for its USDT stablecoin. The legal case originates from a complaint filed by a group of investors against iFinex, the entity behind Tether and crypto exchange Bitfinex. The plaintiffs claim that the business issued unbacked USDT with the aim to ramp up the prices of various cryptocurrencies, and thus manipulated the market. The New York judge has decided to accept the plaintiffs’ requests for production (RFPs) which require iFinex to release “any and all general ledgers, balance sheets, income statements, cash-flow statements, and profit and loss statements,” according to the available court documents. In her order, the judge said the “Court finds that Plaintiffs’ financial records RFPs are not overly broad, particularly given that Defendants have had opportunities to make sample productions of the financial records RFPs, but have failed to do so despite Plaintiffs’ agreement to such proposal”.  “Plaintiffs plainly explain why they need this information: to assess the backing of USDT with US dollars, and to allow a forensic accountant to assess the USDT reserve,” according to the judge. In response to the order, New York-based law firm Debevoise & Plimpton, which represents iFinex on the case, said that the plaintiffs’ requests demonstrate “their failure to actively prosecute their case, as well as their unwillingness to tailor their patently overbroad requests to documents that are relevant to their claims.” With this in mind, the defendant’s law firm has asked the court to deny plaintiffs’ request which it considers to be “unduly burdensome on their face, considering that Tether is the issuer of a stablecoin and Bitfinex is a cryptocurrency exchange.”

Emergency Assistance: Health Equity For Those Who Need It Most The Times Of Israel
Emergency Assistance: Health Equity For Those Who Need It Most The Times Of Israel
Emergency Assistance: Health Equity For Those Who Need It Most – The Times Of Israel https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/emergency-assistance-health-equity-for-those-who-need-it-most-the-times-of-israel/ On Monday, at the Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York, I joined Anil Soni, CEO of the WHO Foundation, to announce the creation of a Global Health Equity Fund launched by the WHO Foundation and OurCrowd. The Global Health Equity Fund is a $200 million financial-first impact venture capital investment fund that will focus on breakthrough technology solutions that can improve healthcare around the world. It will support the UN’s sustainable development goals, kick-start innovation and increase investment in the health sector. Its mission is to increase equitable access to medical care while also delivering competitive returns to investors. Our announcement triggered a wave of global news coverage, including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Reuters, CNBC TV Africa, TechCrunch and The Times of Israel. The fund was conceived in the wake of the continuing Covid-19 pandemic, which sent shockwaves through health systems across the world. It exposed chronic weaknesses – even in the world’s most developed countries – the under-funding of healthcare provision, and inequitable access to technology solutions, including vaccines, medicines and diagnostics. Even now, the extensive medical armory developed to fight Covid-19 remains unavailable to the majority of the population of low-income countries. Even before the coronavirus pandemic threw the weaknesses in our global health system into such sharp relief, the growing health inequity between different parts of the world – and even between different regions within countries – was becoming painfully clear. The pandemic was a wake-up call for many high-tech investors and opened their eyes to health inequity around the world. At the same time, those involved in BioTech and related companies were aware of the potential of innovative technology to save lives and deliver medical treatment to more communities via modern technology. Access to essential medical services and basic healthcare is declining rapidly in many countries of the world, irrespective of their wealth or development. High-income countries face mounting crises in their health systems with long waiting lists, inadequate emergency care and overburdened services. Low-income countries struggle to provide basic healthcare and are unable to meet the additional challenge of natural disasters and health emergencies. Beyond direct healthcare, the gap is widening between those with and those without regular access to clean water, fresh food, clean air, adequate waste services and the basic environmental conditions necessary for healthy living. In every country in the world, too many men, women, and children lack access to adequate healthcare because of income disparities and systemic barriers that perpetuate inequity. Despite clear models for successfully balancing economic return with equitable access, such as the provision of medicines for HIV and AIDS, the world failed to deliver solutions for Covid-19 to everyone, everywhere. It is imperative that we deploy solutions in response to that failure, including directing investment to innovation and aligning both to equity as a goal from the start. OurCrowd and our partners at the WHO Foundation believe it is time for a global healthcare transformation that will prioritize practical solutions to these critical and life-threatening challenges. We believe that the key to this transformation lies in technological innovation. To meet this urgent global need the Global Health Equity Fund will focus on developing solutions designed to provide health for all, while creating economic growth. This will be achieved by investing in MedTech, HealthTech and other technologies directly related to medical care, as well as technologies in AgTech, FoodTech and energy transition that help to reduce or eliminate health risks. OurCrowd has a track record in identifying healthcare and sustainability investments able to deliver value to patients, healthcare providers and investors. The collaboration with the WHO Foundation will assist the identification of additional promising investments and facilitate the commitment of investors and entrepreneurs to equitable access to these innovative technologies. An initial fund simulation based on existing relevant companies in the OurCrowd portfolio suggests a net IRR of 18% and a net multiple of 1.73x. Philanthropic causes The fund will be structured to ensure that a significant percentage of the fund’s carried interest will revert to the WHO Foundation to support its philanthropic causes. Associated with the fund is an Access Pledge, an innovation of the WHO Foundation to align investment with commitments by portfolio companies to ensure that their technology solutions are available, accessible, appropriate, and affordable for populations experiencing inequity, particularly in low- and middle-income settings. As part of the Access Pledge, companies will seek to develop a commercially viable Access Plan relevant to their business. The WHO Foundation and OurCrowd will appoint a global health advisory board to provide assistance to these companies so they can plan early for business models that combine economic return with equitable access. The Global Health Equity Fund will focus on healthcare and also on the industries that are direct determinants of health, including energy transition, food and agriculture, which together address markets worth trillions of dollars globally. The target portfolio companies will therefore not only innovate to improve medical care but will also work to mitigate current global health risks related to climate change, fossil fuels, and looming food and water shortages. The WHO Foundation and Our Crowd share the aim of acting as standard bearers within the investment and global health communities, demonstrating the viability of investing to get robust returns, and intended impact, with both goals benefiting from partnership across the private and public sectors. Jonathan Medved is the founder and CEO of OurCrowd, the world’s leading global equity funding platform for accredited investors, based in Jerusalem.

Federer has not competed since Wimbledon in July 2021. He has had a series of knee operations. Federer posted his news on Twitter. He says his farewell event will be the Laver Cup in London next week. That is a team event run by his management company. This announcement news comes just days after the end of the U.S. Open. That tournament was expected to be the last of 23-time major champion Serena Williams’ career. The timing of it all hardly could be more symbolic: All within a span of two weeks, Serena Williams plays what is believed to be her last match at age 40, Roger Federer announces he’ll be retiring at 41, Iga Swiatek wins her third Grand Slam title at 21, and Carlos Alcaraz gets his first at 19. After so much handwringing in recent years about what would become of tennis once transcendent superstars such as Williams and Federer leave the game, the sport does seem to be in good hands as it prepares to move on. Federer said Thursday he will exit after the Laver Cup next week. Williams lost in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sept. 2.

Inkeverse Launches Social Metaverse Product Targeted At Gen Z – Pandaily https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/inkeverse-launches-social-metaverse-product-targeted-at-gen-z-pandaily/ Chinese social networking firm Inkeverse is continuing its push into the metaverse with the launch of a new social product for overseas markets called “The Place.” As a 3D virtual social platform for Generation Z consumers in Europe and the United States, it provides users with immersive social experiences through virtual scenes and images, as well as through real-time audio interaction. This is the first overseas metaverse product launched by Inkeverse since changing its name from “Inke” in June this year. After logging in, users can customize the face and clothes of their virtual image freely, wander around in different scenes, interact with their partners in real time, and participate in online activities. One of the most important features of the metaverse is 3D immersion. In terms of user experience and UI design, The Place has strong immersion and real-time interaction functions. A diversified and rich entertainment scene has been added to meet social needs. Considering that the main users are Gen Z consumers in Europe and the United States, The Place features skateboarding and graffiti in nightclubs, music rooms, video rooms, and more. The team behind The Place is responsible for Web3 projects in Inkeverse. Project leader Liu Zhiqiang said that at present, social metaverse has many labels, such as virtual images, virtual scenes, games, combinination with hardware, and more. Apart from difficulties with infrastructure and technology, Liu believes that solving the needs of social interaction is the key, and that the fundamental logic of designing products is to grasp the needs of users. The secret to making a good product for overseas markets is to have a quick and accurate understanding of local cultural habits, popular elements, preferences, needs and so on. A considerable number of Inkeverse’s team members have rich experience and overseas study backgrounds. The project team will also find local young people to do part-time jobs, such as local research and feedback collection, so that the company can adjust the product strategy in real time. Inkeverse achieved revenue of 4.061 billion yuan ($573 million) in the first half of the year, up 0.7% year-on-year, according to the company’s first financial results report since changing its name. The net loss in H1 was 111 million yuan, compared with a net profit of 142 million yuan a year earlier. The company didn’t disclose operating data of its metaverse business. SEE ALSO: Social Metaverse Platform Soul Showcases Ling OS and NAWA Engine On May 16 this year, Inkeverse announced the start of its metaverse business by issuing over 1,000 NFTs jointly with HootLabs, an overseas NFT platform. Two days later, the industry’s first karaoke app based on metaverse was launched. On June 9, it launched a metaverse romance product called “Couple Planet,” allowing couples to create a private space in the metaverse. Inkeverse aims to increase the integration of socialization and metaverse, and to build a richer and multi-dimensional scene to meet the more subdivided needs of users.

Beam EScooter Review – Is It Safe To Ride In Malaysia? – TechNave https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/beam-escooter-review-is-it-safe-to-ride-in-malaysia-technave/ Why are we reviewing a Beam eScooter (a.k.a. Beam Saturn+, but let’s just call it the eScooter) and can you even buy this? Well, we are a tech media website, after all… And no, you can’t buy one here. To be frank, I was also surprised when Beam Malaysia contacted us to review it. But I guess it was to test out how well and safe the eScooter is due to increased usage in Malaysia recently. Before I get started, let me share the story of my first time using the Beam eScooter. The year was 2020, just before the pandemic happened, and I got invited by AMD to check out the Ryzen 4000 Series Processors in Texas. I used to have a Xiaomi Electric eScooter, so I’m quite experienced with them. And I was delighted to know that I could get around some areas in Texas with the Beam eScooter just outside of a hotel. This is one BIG BOI (so big that it’s almost impossible to fit into a car) I didn’t use it that much, though, because I had to pay in USD. But I still remember how big and sturdy it was. Compared with the Xiaomi Electric eScooter, the Beam eScooter is a lot more robust. I remember drifting on the wet road a bit when making a turn; you have to take my word for it because it was a pretty cool moment. Fast forward to today, the Beam eScooter is how I remembered it but with some new things. Now that I get to fully explore the whole vehicle, there are a couple of interesting features that I got to try, starting with the app. The Beam app is fairly straightforward, and by tapping at the Settings on the top left, you will see a bunch of options for you to get started. But since I’m reviewing it, I don’t have the customer rider feature to show you where and how you should pay for it. The Beam app home page The Tools in the Settings Still, the Tools in Settings are where most of the useful features are. You can do a bunch of stuff, such as diagnosing or inspecting the battery. But for me, the most important one is the lock and unlock function. So if you happen to park the scooter at a designated destination or random place where you’re scared it might get stolen, you can very much rely on this because it will set a speed limit (so nobody can ride away with it). Trust me, nobody is ever gonna bother stealing it. Although the speed limit is set when locked, you can still push the scooter but I doubt the thief would get very far (it’s like trying to push a dead cow, figuratively speaking). You can also rely on the Beam app to easily locate it since it’s already paired, so don’t fret. Additionally, you will find other functions like on/off for the headlight. But you don’t really need to use it that much because the Beam eScooter automatically switches it on if you’re riding at night. It has two brakes on each handle for some reason My thumb is too short to reach for the headlight switch lol Left: The headlight on the front; Right: An iPhone on the phone holder Left: The cupholder and speaker; Right: The stand holder and front wheel The red light behind shines quite brightly, and the wheels aren’t the air-pump type Let there be light In terms of riding experience, the Beam eScooter definitely feels safe. I’ve had my fair share of falls, from the Xiaomi Electric eScooter and a non-electrical type with almost uncontrollable speed (not recommended, no matter how cheap it is). Due to the weight, it’s able to stabilise speed and momentum quite well, even when taking a corner. I’m not sure how fast the Beam eScooter can go, but that doesn’t really matter. For safety, the micro vehicle has a limitation of 25km/h, no matter how hard you try. Even when going downhill, the scooter can detect the velocity and try to slow down. Personally, I find this very helpful as it helps prevent potential accidents down the road. Also, it’s powerful enough to go uphill, but not when it’s too steep. Before and after putting a cup of coke in the cup holder, I was really worried that it would spill, but thank goodness it didn’t The battery pack is huge! Fortunately, I don’t think you really need to worry about the battery performance. The Beam eScooter has a 15300mAh battery, so it has plenty of juice to go around, even when half-full. Even if you have the eScooter with you for the whole month (and you can’t turn the Beam eScooter off), you only need to charge it overnight once a week, and you’re good to go. Of course, it varies on how often you ride it.  All in all, Beam Malaysia is doing a good job of making the eScooter an enjoyable and safe riding experience. However, the same cannot be said for many Malaysian roads. Per Malaysian law, micro vehicles have been prohibited on the main roads. But even so, most Malaysian roads don’t exactly have the most pedestrian-friendly paths. Broken sidewalks, chairs and tables on the pathways, motorcycles parking illegally and many more. The best way to ride the scooters is in a park or around your neighbourhood. Wanna ride with me? But what do you think of Beam eScooter? Are you keen on taking it out for a spin with your friends and family? Indian Government Working On How GST Tax Could Be Applied To Crypto – Taxes Bitcoin News – Bitcoin News https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/indian-government-working-on-how-gst-tax-could-be-applied-to-crypto-taxes-bitcoin-news-bitcoin-news/ India’s ministry of finance is reportedly working on how the goods and services tax (GST) could apply to crypto transactions. “A better understanding of how cryptocurrencies fit into our legal system is the prerequisite for the decision on the GST rate,” a source told local media. India’s Goods and Services Tax Could Soon Apply to Crypto Transactions India’s finance ministry is reportedly working on a comprehensive goods and services tax (GST) regime, Livemint reported Monday. A source told the publication: We are still discussing the applicability of GST in the case of crypto assets. Right now, it is levied on services, so we need to see if crypto assets are declared as a good or service. Previously, local media reported that the government was considering imposing either an 18% or a 28% GST on crypto assets. However, the source was quoted as saying: “We can have a special rate for it. It may not necessarily be 18% or 28% — maybe somewhere between that. We have had a few discussions on it and will arrive at a decision soon.” Another source explained to the news outlet: A better understanding of how cryptocurrencies fit into our legal system is the prerequisite for the decision on the GST rate. The GST will only be applicable on the margin or service fees, and not on the entire value of the asset, the publication conveyed, adding that the government is also examining the treatment of certain transactions, like mining or airdropped crypto tokens. An Indian ministerial panel reportedly met at the end of June to discuss the GST tax on crypto transactions. However, the officials did not disclose any decision that came out of the meeting. The Indian government has already started taxing crypto income and transactions. A 30% tax on income from crypto assets went into effect on April 1. Additionally, a 1% tax deducted at source (TDS) on payment of crypto assets started applying on July 1. Meanwhile, the Indian government is also working on the country’s crypto policy. In an effort to become Financial Action Task Force (FATF) compliant, the government plans to finalize its stance on the legality of cryptocurrencies by early next year. Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has also urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to take a lead role in developing a global framework for cryptocurrency. Do you think India will impose a GST tax on crypto? Let us know in the comments section below. Alyssa Thomas On Tight Turnaround Helps Lead Short-Handed U.S. To Win Over Belgium In World Cup Opener ESPN
Alyssa Thomas, On Tight Turnaround, Helps Lead Short-Handed U.S. To Win Over Belgium In World Cup Opener – ESPN https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/alyssa-thomas-on-tight-turnaround-helps-lead-short-handed-u-s-to-win-over-belgium-in-world-cup-opener-espn/ 12:39 AM ET Associated Press SYDNEY — It’s been a whirlwind week for Alyssa Thomas. She went from losing in the WNBA Finals on Sunday to flying 10,000 miles to Australia a day later to play for the United States in the World Cup. Thomas had 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in her debut for the Americans, who beat Belgium 87-72 in the tournament opener on Thursday. After finding out she’d be on the U.S. roster, she never gave any thought to skipping the World Cup. “Excited to be a part of this, been waiting a long time,” the 30-year-old Thomas said. U.S. coach Cheryl Reeve was impressed with what Thomas was able to do with the short turnaround time. “It’s what I expected Alyssa to do, as it’s just what she does. She’s a competitor and knows how to (play),” Reeve said. “WNBA players don’t get enough credit for how well that they transition from overseas play to WNBA play to national team play.” Breanna Stewart scored 22 points and Jewell Loyd also scored 14 for the short-handed U.S. team, which was still missing Las Vegas Aces players A’ja Wilson, Chelsea Gray and Kelsey Plum. They were on their way to Australia after celebrating the franchise’s first WNBA championship with a parade on Tuesday. The trio is expected to be in Sydney on Friday. Thomas and her Connecticut Sun teammate Brionna Jones, who also arrived on Wednesday, were two of six players on the roster who hadn’t played for the U.S. in either the World Cup or Olympics. This team is very different from the one that won a third straight gold in Spain in 2018. Sue Bird is retired, and Diana Taurasi is out as well. Brittney Griner, who would have been on this team, has been held in Russia since February and last month was sentenced to nine years in prison on drug charges in a politically charged case. The U.S. government is trying to secure her release. These teams met in the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, with the Americans using a big third quarter to pull away and win by 16. The Americans jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead on Thursday before Belgium settled down to get within one. The U.S. lengthened the lead again behind Stewart and Loyd, and was up 48-39 at the half. The Americans went on a 12-4 run to start the third quarter and put the game away. The U.S. did a stellar job defensively on Belgian Emma Meesseman. The Chicago Sky star led the Olympics in scoring last year, averaging 26.8 points. She had four against the U.S, which has now won 23 consecutive World Cup games since losing in the 2006 semifinals to Russia. The Americans are three wins short of matching their record 26-game run from 1998 to 2006. Julie Vanloo scored 13 points to lead Belgium. “Really proud of this young team,” Meesseman said. “Sometimes we lacked focus but a lot to be proud of and looking forward to the next few games.” NEW NUMBER USA Basketball decided to have no one wear Griner’s No. 15 in this tournament. The Americans have used numbers 4 to 15 for a long time. Jones, who would have been 15, was wearing No. 16. SCOREBOARD Puerto Rico beat Bosnia and Herzegovina 82-58 for the country’s first-ever World Cup win. TRIPLE-DOUBLE WATCH Thomas, who had a triple-double in each of the last two games in the WNBA Finals, fell just short of getting the first one at the World Cup since Erika Dobrovicova did it in 1994 for the Slovak Republic against Spain. Assists and rebounds weren’t kept before 1994. TIP-INS The U.S. had 25 assists on 30 baskets. … The Americans forced 25 Belgium turnovers that led to 27 points. … Belgium hit 11 3-pointers to stay in the game. UP NEXT Belgium: Faces South Korea on Friday. U.S.: Plays Puerto Rico on Friday.

Man Convicted Of Shooting 2 Indiana Judges In Street Dispute – The Washington Post https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/man-convicted-of-shooting-2-indiana-judges-in-street-dispute-the-washington-post/ INDIANAPOLIS — A man who shot and wounded two southern Indiana judges outside an Indianapolis fast food restaurant in 2019 was convicted Wednesday on seven of eight felonies and one misdemeanor after a three-day trial. A jury convicted Brandon Kaiser of aggravated battery, multiple battery-related charges and carrying a handgun without a license. He was acquitted on one count of battery resulting in moderate bodily injury. David Margerum, Kaiser’s attorney, told WRTV-TV that Kaiser was taken into custody after the verdict. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 21. Clark County Circuit judges Brad Jacobs and Andrew Adams were shot during the early morning hours of May 1, 2019 in the parking lot of a downtown White Castle restaurant. Another judge, Sabrina Bell of Crawford County, was with Jacobs and Adams at the time. Kaiser claimed he was acting in self-defense against the group of judges, who were in town for a conference, and court documents claimed Bell flipped off Kaiser and his nephew. Adams accepted a plea agreement to plead guilty to battery resulting in bodily injury in September 2019. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors agreed to dismiss six additional charges against the judge. He received a suspended sentence of 365 days. The Indiana Commission of Judicial Qualifications filed disciplinary charges against the three judges involved. Jacobs and Bell were reinstated to the bench in December of that year after serving 30-day suspensions. Adams was ordered to serve a 60-day suspension. Bell resigned from the bench on July 15 after the Indiana Supreme Court suspended her when a special prosecutor filed felony charges against her related to a domestic dispute.

Vacation Rental Ruse: How An Idyllic Farmland Property Lured Many In The Chicago-Area For Thousands Of Dollars NBC Chicago

Vacation Rental Ruse: How An Idyllic Farmland Property Lured Many In The Chicago-Area For Thousands Of Dollars – NBC Chicago https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/vacation-rental-ruse-how-an-idyllic-farmland-property-lured-many-in-the-chicago-area-for-thousands-of-dollars-nbc-chicago/ It was branded as an outdoor adventure. Only a three-hour drive southwest of Chicago, customers could escape to the town of Farmington, Ill., staying at an eight-bedroom, 30-acre lakeside vacation rental retreat.  Surrounded by open farm land, online advertisements for “Norris Outdoor Adventure” showed water slides, a rope swing, games for the kids, and even more reassuring, a smiling, friendly and relatable owner dedicated to their every need. The rental was described as a dream find for many who were planning cross-country family reunions, even weddings at the space. But the dream wasn’t a reality. Instead, customers tell NBC 5 they had their reservations canceled, sometimes literally last minute as they were driving down to the property.  When customers called the owner for their refund, with contracts in hand laying out that very promise, they say the owner “ghosted” them, never to be heard from again. For months, NBC 5 Responds has investigated how a single vacation rental outside of Peoria took many Chicago-area families for thousands of dollars, and the mysterious owner behind the listing that these customers say is to blame.   That owner dodged our calls, emails and requests for comment over many months, offering no insight into what happened.   The complaints have gotten the attention of law enforcement in Farmington, who confirmed to NBC 5 they are actively investigating many complaints involving the property and its owner.  Records obtained through Freedom of Information Act requests paint a picture of a mountain of debt and despair, all centered around the spacious and charming property many hopeful customers now believe they will never see in person. It all started with one customer’s experience, and as NBC 5 continued to ask questions, the list grew to include many more. News articles show “Norris Outdoor Adventure” opened at this property in 2018 on Dee Bee Road in Farmington, Ill. Melissa Oskroba out of Naperville told NBC 5 earlier this year she discovered “Norris Outdoor Adventure” while surfing through the vacation rental website VRBO. “We were super excited about it,” Oskroba said. “[Norris] checked off all of our areas: eight bedrooms, water, yard for the kids. Affordable.” For five years now, Oskroba and seven other friends and their immediate families have gathered for Labor Day. But with the kids and attendance list growing each year, finding the right space proved to be harder than it sounds.   Clicking through the photos and videos of the property, Oskroba thought Norris seemed to be the perfect match for this cherished tradition. At $3,600 for three nights, and enough space for her entire party, Oskroba thought she hit the jackpot.  Photos shared online and taken by former customers show the lake amenities advertised at Norris Outdoor Adventure. That’s when she said she met Amy Shymansky, the owner of the property, and she felt a connection.   “It sounded like I was talking to my mom,” Oskroba recalls, noting that the experience was seemingly going so well, “I was about to call her to start locking up future years of reservations.”  Oskroba paid in full for a reservation this past Labor Day 2022, and months went by before the first curveball. That’s when Oskroba said Shymansky messaged to say she had yanked the property from VRBO so she could more closely vet her guests. But there was a silver lining: Shymansky would be listing the property herself, offering the same deal. Oskroba, worried she couldn’t find a place in time with the same number of bedrooms and space for her family and friends, booked directly with Shymansky. The deal included what Oskroba thought was protection: A contract with a clear cancellation policy, cancel a reservation 30 days or more prior to their reservation date, and they can expect a full refund. Oskroba reserved the property through Shymansky, not giving it a second thought until weeks later, when she tried to pull up the listing online. “It had that 404 no longer valid website message,” Oskroba said. “Then I started digging and within probably 15-20 minutes is when I came across Yelp that had a lot of complaints on there.” Customers on the business review website Yelp complained of falling into a trap Oskroba feared she was already in. “The owner has literally stolen my deposit for the use of this property,” one Norris customer wrote. Another said the owner, “took our money and never responded when we contacted her for keys.” “They will take your money, sign contracts, then ghost you,” a third customer wrote. Oskroba said she was beside herself.   “I just started crying,” Oskroba said. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, what am I going to do?’” Oskroba said she contacted Shymansky to formally cancel the reservation, but eventually, she too was ghosted. No more friendly contacts from the owner, and no word on her refund. Melissa Oskroba of Naperville, Ill. is one of many Norris customers who tell NBC 5 Responds they are owed thousands of dollars in refunds. Through her persistence, Oskroba decided to go another route: Find, organize and communicate with as many other Norris customers she could find online. Oskroba said many got back to her, and eventually, someone in the group contacted NBC 5 Responds for assistance, saying they too were out big money, with no R&R to show for it. Customers like Tinley Park grandmother Claudia Allred.  “I was determined,” Allred told NBC 5 Responds. “[Shymansky] is not going to keep my money!” Allred’s family had stayed at Norris once before in 2020, so she booked again for the following year. She too felt charmed by Shmansky, remarking she was like a “best friend.” But two days before her family was planning to make the second trip to the property in June 2021, Allred said Shymansky messaged her, canceling the reservation. To date, Allred said she has received no refund. Among the customers, NBC 5 also talked with two couples who were planning to have their weddings at the Norris property, but said they had their dream dates disappear, along with their deposits. “It was the first place we looked at and we fell in love,” said Jay Rudisill of BlueGrass, Iowa.  Jay Rudisill and his now-wife, Karen, visited the Norris property in-person and walked away thinking “that was where we were going to have our wedding.” The couple put down a $9,300 deposit, but as the months ticked by closer to their date, Jay Rudisill said Shymansky grew silent. Karen and Jay Rudisill tell NBC 5 Responds they were planning to have their wedding at the Farmington, Ill. property, until Shymansky stopped speaking with them. Seeing that as a red flag, the Rudisills decided to cancel their reservation, knowing they would likely have a fraction of their deposit taken. They said they never imagined it would be the full amount. “I’ve given up hope that I will ever see that money again,” Jay Rudisill told NBC 5, after he said Shymansky stopped returning his calls, emails and even letters demanding his money back. The couple eventually held their wedding on a relative’s property, but were left feeling scorned. When Allred heard about the Rudisills, and other customers in the self-named Norris “support group”, she said she couldn’t believe how many people were allegedly owed money from Shymansky. “I felt like, ‘Why, you dirty dog! You’re doing this to so many people!’” Allred told NBC 5. NBC 5 confirmed through contracts and customers’ communication with Shymansky six individual Norris customers who had their reservations canceled before staying at the property, and who were collectively owed more than $24,000. Some customers have taken Shymansky to court, where they prevailed and had to file liens on the Norris property in hopes of getting any of their money back.  Fulton County records show those liens have company, including a lien filed on the property by the IRS for more than $470,000. While the support group of customers was chasing Amy Shymansky for answers, so was NBC 5 Responds. For months, we tried contacting Shymansky by phone, through emails and by contacting many attorneys who have represented Shymansky in court over the years. Eventually, Trygve Meade, Shymansky’s most recent counsel, told NBC 5, “I’m sorry, but I haven’t been authorized by my client to make any comment on this situation. As a result, I have to decline.” At one point, some of the support group members of former Norris customers said Meade had contacted them personally, promising news would come about their refunds. But eventually, they said he too “ghosted them.”  One office that did return our calls was the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department, serving the idyllic farmland area where Norris Outdoor Adventure is located on Dee Bee Road. A spokesperson said investigators have “received complaints [about] Norris Outdoor Adventure, and are conducting an investigation.”  The trouble for Shymansky continues. NBC 5 Responds found a bench warrant active out of Peoria for Shymansky’s arrest, tied to an unrelated lawsuit and judgment not yet paid by the woman. State records show that the business license for Norris Outdoor Adventure was “involuntarily dissolved” back in 2019, after the company failed to file annual reports with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office. And most recently, court records show the former owner of the Farmington property, who sold it to Shymansky in a “contract for deed” transaction, prevailed in eviction court, with a Judge signing an eviction order forcing Shymansky to surrender and vacate the property by Aug. 26, 2022. Shymansky is currently appealing the Judge’s decision. Hearing this news hasn’t calmed the nerves of Shyman...

Laguna Niguels Stephanie Winstead: An Advocate For Business Owners The Epoch Times
Laguna Niguel’s Stephanie Winstead: ‘An Advocate For Business Owners’ – The Epoch Times https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/laguna-niguels-stephanie-winstead-an-advocate-for-business-owners-the-epoch-times/ Laguna Niguel resident Stephanie Winstead seeks one of the two open seats for city council in the upcoming Nov. 8 election. Her opponents are Melissa Caldwell, Ray Gennawey, Javad Mokhbery, Stephanie Oddo, and Jeff von Waldburg. Winstead has been active in the Laguna Niguel Chamber of Commerce, the city’s investment banking and audit committee as well as on the city’s Transportation and Parks and Recreation commissions. She completed her undergraduate work at UC Irvine and graduated from Chapman Law with a tax law emphasis. “I’ve been active in the city for over a decade … I’ve done so many things there are to do within the city, with the exception of sitting on the city council,” she told The Epoch Times. (Courtesy of Stephanie Winstead) Winstead’s activism with the city started when her father-in-law suggested she join the Chamber of Commerce, saying doing so would be good for her newly opened business. “I didn’t even know what the Chamber of Commerce was, [or] what it did,” she said. In 2009, after establishing her law practice, which specializes in of estate planning and will and trust child guardianship, she joined. She said it was “nice to be an advocate with business owners and make sure that Laguna Niguel remains a business-friendly city.” She also helped spearhead a program in 2020 which created more than 2,000 handmade Valentine’s day cards for veterans and active military members. Winstead is endorsed by former Laguna Niguel mayors Gary Capata, Robert Ming, and John Mark Jennings as well as by California State Assemblywoman and former Laguna Niguel Mayor Laurie Davies. She said if elected key issues she will address are funding and resources for public safety, supporting small businesses, maintaining a debt-free city with fiscal responsibility, preserving open spaces like parks and trails and continuing services that help senior citizens maintain healthy living. She said she first learned of Laguna Niguel when driving through the city on her way to Laguna Beach. “I had this feeling of this place feels like home, this is where I need to be,” she said. Winstead and her husband, Ray, ultimately moved to the city in 2009 after stints in Irvine, Laguna Hills, and Aliso Viejo. According to the city’s most recent filings, she has raised $33,000 in campaign contributions through the end of June. Campaign finance disclosure documents show she has raised about $27,000 from Jan. 1, 2021, through the end of June 2022, and has made a $14,000 personal loan to her campaign. Follow

Fantasy Football Week 3 Lineup Decisions: Starts, Sits, Sleepers And Busts To Know For Every Game – CBS Sports https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/fantasy-football-week-3-lineup-decisions-starts-sits-sleepers-and-busts-to-know-for-every-game-cbs-sports/ Dig into the players who might be tough start/sit calls in your lineup based on game film notes, stats, more Sep 21, 2022 at 11:09 pm ET • 19 min read USATSI Fantasy Football is all about the matchups. Even though you drafted your team with certain hopes and intentions, your weekly lineup decisions shouldn’t be determined by the order you picked your players in. You need to check who your players play and make sure you’ve got the right guys in — and the wrong guys out. It’s too early to be absolutely sure on which matchups will be easy and which ones will be tough, but we can take some educated guesses based on healthy personnel, defensive schemes, track records and key details of offenses. The things we know can help us minimize the impact of the things we don’t know. This should lead to better decisions being made. We’ll go through every game and highlight the players who aren’t obvious starts and sits (because you don’t need to be told to start Jonathan Taylor). You should feel more comfortable starting or sitting players based on the information given, and feeling comfortable with your Fantasy lineup before the games start is the best feeling in the world.   All lines from Caesars Sportsbook. Sit Him (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: Cooper has lined up wide almost exclusively through two weeks. He’s also run routes of 16-plus yards on just 4 of his 61 routes. It’s safe to say he’ll continue to need a lot of targets and a touchdown to be real good for Fantasy. Thing is, those are realistic possibilities. The Steelers have allowed three touchdowns, a 68% catch rate and 4.79 YAC/rec (yards after catch per reception) to outside receivers through their first two games. But improving their pass defense will be a point of emphasis after some breakdowns last week. I expect the Steelers to play plenty of man coverage with a safety hovering toward Cooper, and I don’t think they’ll blitz a ton (Jacoby Brissett has actually beaten the blitz a few times already this year). Cooper has seen a 35% target per route run share against man coverage this year, but with inefficient results (57% catch rate, 8.3 yards per catch).    Sit Him (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: The Dolphins have allowed a 78.3% completion rate and 200 yards allowed (second-most) to opposing tight ends through two weeks. But more than half of the yards went to hyper-targeted Mark Andrews last week; Knox just isn’t in the same class.  The matchup has been favorable for Knox in the past against the Dolphins, but even when he’s scored on them he’s maxed out at 11 PPR points.  Bust Candidate (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: This won’t be easy for Tagovailoa. Not that he’s a mess when he’s blitzed but he’s less effective then compared to not blitzed, and he’s specifically worse against zone coverage (64.4% completion rate, 87.3 QB rating) than man coverage (89.5% completion rate, 156.5 QB rating). The Bills have played zone coverage on just over 90% of their snaps through two weeks and have the second-best pass rush pressure rate (41.6%) so far in 2022. They’re going to try and get to Tagovailoa while keeping their defensive backs downfield so they don’t give up the big play.  It means Tagovailoa’s going to have to get rid of the ball quickly a good amount of the time. Against zone coverage and with 2.4 seconds or less to throw, Tagovailoa has completed 69.6% of his throws (29th-best) over 23 drop backs (fifth-most!) for 5.87 yards per attempt (20th-best) and no touchdowns (not good). He’s considerably more efficient when he has more time than that, but his completion rate is still an ugly 60% (21st best).  The Bills did a terrific job against Jaylen Waddle last year. Their results against Tyreek Hill when he was in Kansas City were great (under 75 yards per game) in the regular season; horrible in the playoffs (over 150 yards per game). Both figure to get a slew of targets.  Start Him in PPR (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: Cover-3 Captain Gus Bradley will bring his zone-heavy Colts scheme to keep Patrick Mahomes from throwing deep. In these situations, I love short-area targets like Smith-Schuster to come through for a volume-driven stat line.   Last week Smith-Schuster’s snaps were split evenly between the slot and out wide, a change from being more of an outside receiver in Week 1. My hunch is that Smith-Schuster will be even more in the slot this week to avoid coverage from Stephon Gilmore. Colts slot cornerback Kenny Moore has allowed an 81.8% catch rate on 11 targets through two games with a touchdown given up in each. Mahomes has thrown 17 passes this season against Cover-3, completing 89.5% of his throws for 271 yards. Smith-Schuster is tied with Travis Kelce for most receptions against that coverage scheme (four).  Sneaky Sleeper (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: We got Old Jameis Winston back, if only for one week. Winston went bonkers with the deep throws, averaging 13.22 Air Yards per pass attempt (tops among Week 2 starters by a mile, though not literally), but with two of his three interceptions coming on those long tosses. Last year Winston was pressured on 58.6% of his pass attempts by the Panthers, third-most for any team in any week in 2021. He threw two interceptions and zero touchdowns in a Panthers blowout win. The Panthers rank 10th in pass rush pressure rate through two weeks. So the bet is that Winston’s coaches reel him in with shorter, quicker throws, which are better suited for Landry even though Landry himself got some deep targets in Week 1.  Statistically, the Panthers pass defense has been great against receivers, but they’ve faced the Browns and Giants. Not that Landry is any better than Amari Cooper or Sterling Shepard, but the Saints will be a steeper test for them. And, for what it’s worth, the Panthers’ only pass-defense flaw so far this season has been a high catch rate allowed to slot receivers (88.2% ranks sixth-worst). Landry predominantly lines up in the slot. Start Him (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: Pierce took some positive steps forward last week, playing 63% of the snaps and two of three inside of 10 yards. While his vision and patience aren’t quite there yet, he flashed his power and burst on a number of runs last week. He was also helped by an improving Texans offensive line.  Meanwhile, the Bears were blown apart by the Packers, allowing 5.85 yards per rush and winding up bottom-six in pretty much every rush defense metric imaginable. Notably, it’s the second week in a row they’ve ranked poorly in yards before contact per rush allowed (1.79 yards on the season ranks seventh worst). Chicago has been especially beaten on edge runs (6.3 yards per carry allowed; 39.3% of runs resulting in a first down).  Flex Starter (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: This might be the game that makes or breaks Mooney. It’s Chicago’s first matchup of the year where Justin Fields shouldn’t be under serious pressure — his O-line has given up a pressure on nearly half of his drop backs. That’s why Fields isn’t throwing to anyone, not just Mooney.  But make no mistake, Mooney is getting open and would have had nice numbers already if Fields had better protection. That should happen against the Texans, who are 25th in pass rush pressure rate despite being tied for 10th in blitzes called.  The Texans are also bottom-10 in almost every single pass defense metric against wide receivers (including yards per catch, YAC/rec and tackles missed), save for two: Their 60.8% catch rate allowed is top-10 thanks to 11 passes defended (best in football). Start Him (Lineup Decisions) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: Cousins seemed very out-of-sync against Philadelphia. Many throws didn’t have his usual velocity and he seemed focused on getting rid of the ball as quickly as possible. He threw three deep passes, had one picked off and would have completed two if not for a bad drop by Irv Smith.  A matchup against the Lions should work out better — Cousins will be at home versus a pass defense that let up three touchdowns and 337 yards last week to Carson Wentz and 12.08 yards per catch overall (sixth-worst) through two weeks. Cousins has also put up at least 23 Fantasy points in three of his past four against the Lions.  Expect the Lions to dial up a lot of blitzes just as they have all season, but with zone coverage behind it. Cousins should be able to navigate past that with help from his offensive line. He should be good for at least 250 yards and a couple of scores, especially since he figures to get Adam Thielen more involved after barely connecting with him in Week 2 (or Week 1).  Sit Him (Lineup Decision) Projections powered by Sportsline What to know: The continued barrage of targets going to Amon-Ra St. Brown is putting a lid on Hockenson’s upside. Hockenson still has a not-bad 19.4% target share through two weeks, but he’s caught half of those targets for 9.14 yards per grab. Hockenson is also not running downfield much — of the 60 routes he’s run, only 10 have been 11-plus yards downfield and only one of those 10 routes resulted in a target. It means he’s much more of a short-area safety valve for Jared Goff and not a primary focal point.  That goes double inside of 10 yards, where he’s played 11 snaps but run just three routes and had zero targets.  The Vikings aren’t necessarily stalwarts against tight ends — they’ve allowed a 78.6% catch rate so far this season, which is bottom-five...

Dubai Metaverse Assembly: All You Need To Know The National
Dubai Metaverse Assembly: All You Need To Know – The National https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/dubai-metaverse-assembly-all-you-need-to-know-the-national/ The event will bring together experts to shape the future of the metaverse in the emirate Dubai’s Museum of the Future will embody the forward-thinking spirit of the UAE’s founding fathers, a senior Emirati minister said. Photo: UAE Government Media Office Beta V.1.0 – Powered by automated translation The inaugural Dubai Metaverse Assembly, first announced by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed, Crown Prince of Dubai, and organised by the Dubai Future Foundation, is set to take place on September 28 and 29. A host of global organisations will be in attendance, as Dubai showcases how it is at the cutting edge of future technology and will remain so in the future. What will happen at the event? The Dubai Future Foundation said that the assembly aimed to position Dubai as one of the best cities in the world by investing in promising economic opportunities, adopting and deploying metaverse technology, and developing digital infrastructure that supports global transformations and the digital economy. The assembly will establish a global platform for launching discussions that will help to identify the opportunities of the metaverse and harness its potential, state news agency Wam reported. It added that specialised workshops will bring together major companies, specialists and pioneers. This is with the objective of capitalising on metaverse technologies to create tangible outcomes and enhance the quality of life in both the real and virtual worlds. Who is attending? There will be more than 300 global experts and more than 40 specialised organisations discussing, exploring and shaping the future of the metaverse. The event will host the likes of the World Economic Forum, Meta, Mastercard, Emirates airline and Accenture. Demand for places at the event was “immense”, Hamad Al Shirawi, Dubai Future Foundation’s director of projects, told The National last month. “There’s been immense demand from the government, private companies, technology start-ups and innovators in Web3 locally and internationally,” he said. “We expect speakers from leading and most innovative global players in the metaverse-sphere to gather at the assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue around key topics such as the role of government; enabling factors for creating ecosystems on the metaverse; how Web3 technologies are enabling new business models and interactions on the metaverse; and how private entities are driving change in sectors such as gaming, art, education and finance.” Live streaming will be available to those unable to attend. What is the metaverse? The metaverse is where people, represented by avatars or three-dimensional likenesses, can interact in virtual worlds. It is part of Web3, the next evolutionary step of the internet, with blockchain, decentralisation, openness and greater user utility among its core components. The value of the global metaverse market is forecast to exceed $1.6 trillion by 2030 at a compound annual growth rate of more than 50 per cent, from an estimated $40 billion in 2021, Canada-based Precedence Research said. What about the Dubai Metaverse Strategy? This was announced in July and aims to create 40,000 jobs and add $4bn to the emirate’s economy in the next five years. We launched the Dubai Metaverse Strategy today, which aims to foster innovation in new technology. Dubai is home to over 1,000 companies operating in the metaverse and blockchain sector, which contributes $500 million to our national economy. pic.twitter.com/J1XRmd2ub3 — Hamdan bin Mohammed (@HamdanMohammed) July 18, 2022 Sheikh Hamdan said the plan was the “next revolution in the technological and economic field that will affect all aspects of life over the next two decades”. The initiative aims to double the number of blockchain companies and the metaverse by five times. As of July, there were 1,000 companies in Dubai working in the metaverse, Sheikh Hamdan said. Dubai has also formed a higher committee for future technology and digital economy, as it seeks to establish itself as a global hub for the future economy. In May, Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority said it had entered into the metaverse with the establishment of its Metaverse HQ, making it the first regulator to have a presence there. The authority was established in March by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, under the Dubai Virtual Asset Regulation Law, the first such law in the emirate. Where is the assembly being held? It will be at the Museum of the Future and Emirates Towers. Updated: September 22, 2022, 3:30 AM

Crypto Prices Sink During Seesaw Day The Fed decreed and crypto markets scrambled, sending assets higher in the initial hours following the U.S. central bank’s latest, hefty interest rate hike, and then spiraling. Bitcoin was recently trading at abut $18,500, a more than 2% decline over the past 24 hours, although the largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization dipped well below $18,400 at one point Monday (UTC), its lowest level since early June. A year ago, BTC’s price was more than double its current level. Ether was recently changing hands at roughly $1,250, a roughly 5.5% drop from the previous day. The price of the second largest crypto by market value has been tumbling in the aftermath of last week’s Merge, the landmark technological overhaul of the Ethereum network as investors prioritize its potential, longer-term benefits over immediate price impact. Investors will soon be eyeing next year’s Ethereum’s “Shanghai” upgrade, which will allow users to withdraw staked ETH. Other cryptos followed a similar price pattern, rising immediately after the rate announcement before plummeting, with EOS recently off more than 10% and YGG and ADA both down over 4%. Crypto prices tracked major stock indexes, which also seesawed during the day, rising early before plunging post-announcement. The tech-heavy Nasdaq and S&P 500, which has a robust technology component, each dropped 1.7%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) fell 1.8% as markets chewed over Federal Reserve comments indicating more harsh inflationary medicine to come. The declines did not sweep up exchange giant Coinbase and other crypto-exposed companies, which rose on the day. The Fed raised interest rates a robust 75 basis points for a third consecutive time after the most recent price data showed inflation remaining stubbornly high and the economy slowing more gradually than the bank had hoped, including a still torrid job market. The consensus among officials involved in the latest policy decision is for the bank to raise rates a total of 1.25% at its two remaining Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meetings this year. The Fed hopes to lower inflation to 2% from its current, near four-decade high over 8%. “My main message has not changed at all,” Fed Chair Jerome Powell said during a press conference, referencing his speech at the Fed’s Economic Symposium last month in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. “The FOMC is strongly resolved to bring inflation down to 2% and we will keep at it until the job is done.” The rate increase highlighted a day of concerning events for the global economy. Two-year Treasury yields, which have moved in opposite direction of crypto prices, soared over 4% following the Fed announcement, their highest level in 15 years. And home sales declined for a seventh straight month. With 30-year-fixed mortgage rates already soaring to 6% for the first time in almost 15 years, the drop-off should continue. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin ratcheted up macroeconomic uncertainty, announcing the call-up of 300,000 troops to bolster the country’s rapidly faltering invasion of the Ukraine. The unprovoked attack has affected energy prices and global supply chains. Yet inflation and monetary policy remained central for most crypto investors and observers of the space. Riyad Carey, a research analyst at crypto data firm Kaiko noted “a sharper price reaction to the CPI release than to the [Ethereum upgrade] Merge.” “I don’t foresee crypto, especially BTC and ETH, bucking the Fed’s influence any time soon,” he said. Biggest Gainers There are no gainers in CoinDesk 20 today. Biggest Losers What’s Next for Ethereum Post-Merge? Last week’s Ethereum Merge drew 40,000 viewers to one popular viewing party but the long-awaited shift to a faster, more environmentally friendly proof-of-work protocol did little to impress many traders. In a textbook sell-the-news scenario, they’ve sent ether prices tumbling more than 15% during the past week. The decline has dovetailed with plunging equity markets and rumblings about possible centralization of the Ethereum network in the Twittersphere. “Lido and Coinbase alone represent just under 45% of total validation,” Paul McCaffrey, crypto strategist at KBW, highlighted in an email to CoinDesk. “Lido leads at 30.1% with ~ 4.16M ETH, followed by Coinbase at 14.5% with 2M ETH.” Ether’s decline has raised fundamental questions about Ethereum’s future, and while optimism runs high about the platform’s potential long-run benefits, some prominent observers also have concerns that the Merge will create new obstacles. A lure for ESG investors? McCaffrey said he remained “in the bullish camp” over the medium-to-long term, as more network validators join the network and alleviate such concerns over time. “The Merge represents a landmark industry event and has the potential to draw ESG investors into the mix who will appreciate the energy efficient angles and the opportunity ETH brings to the masses (especially the unbanked),” he explained. Others shared the sentiment, stating that they viewed the Merge as a long-term indicator of strong fundamentals despite recent price hiccups. “The Merge could be more of a longer-term playout in the price as the upgrade is likely to attract more institutions, which could benefit ETH/USD price over a longer term,” Austin Kimm, director of strategy at Choise, said. “Ethereum is still the granddaddy of all blockchains with approximately half of all tokens being created on and using the network.” Elsewhere, Anto Paroian, executive director at the crypto hedge fund ARK36, told CoinDesk that Ethereum’s “big test” had only just begun. “Although the proof-of-work and the proof-of-stake blockchains have successfully merged, only now would it be possible to discover the full impact of the Merge on the vast ecosystem of apps built on top of the Ethereum blockchain,” Paroian said, referring to the billions of dollars worth of cryptocurrencies locked up on Ethereum-based applications. “This includes the DeFi space which is currently valued at around $56 billion. We should all be prepared for strong downside volatility in case of any glitches and previously unforeseen mishaps,” Paroian noted. Apart from the near-term market and technological impact, some observers say ether is likely to receive legal scrutiny in the coming months due to the rewards that the network awards to users to run nodes, or specialized blockchain software, to process transactions on Ethereum. “(There’s) the possibility of recognizing ETH as a security token. On the one hand, after the transition to PoS, the coin will have signs of security, such as, for example, the expectation of making a profit. And many financiers say that such an outcome is possible,” Serhii Zhdanov, CEO of crypto exchange EXMO, said in a Telegram message. Zhdanov warned that such an outcome would create a “disaster for ordinary users,” one that could even see “delisting of its token from crypto exchanges” in the worst-case scenario. U.S. Appeals Court Says Trump Criminal Probe Can Resume Classified Records Review – Reuters https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/u-s-appeals-court-says-trump-criminal-probe-can-resume-classified-records-review-reuters/ Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends a rally in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, U.S., September 3, 2022. REUTERS/Andrew Kelly Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com WASHINGTON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department can resume reviewing classified records seized by the FBI from former President Donald Trump’s Florida home pending appeal, a federal appellate court ruled on Wednesday, giving a boost to the criminal investigation into whether the records were mishandled or compromised. The Atlanta-based 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals granted a request by federal prosecutors to block U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s stay barring them from using the classified documents in their probe until an independent arbiter, called a special master, vets the materials to weed out any that could be deemed privileged and withheld from investigators. The appeals court also said it would agree to reverse a portion of the lower court’s order that required the government to hand over records with classification markings for the special master’s review. Register now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com “We conclude that the United States would suffer irreparable harm from the district court’s restrictions on its access to this narrow—and potentially critical—set of materials, as well as the court’s requirement that the United States submit the classified records to the special master for review,” the three-judge panel wrote. The decision is “limited in nature,” the panel wrote, as the Justice Department had asked only for a partial stay pending appeal, and that the panel was not able to decide on the merits of the case itself. The three judges who made the decision were Robin Rosenbaum, an appointee of Democratic former President Barack Obama, and Britt Grant and Andrew Brasher, both of whom were appointed by Trump. Trump’s lawyers could potentially ask the U.S. Supreme Court, whose 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by him, to intervene in the matter. In filings on Tuesday, Trump’s lawyers urged the court to keep the stay in place and to allow them under the supervision of the special master, U.S Judge Raymond Dearie, to review all of the seized materials, including those marked classified. A Justice Department spokesperson did not have an immediate comment. Attorneys for Trump could not be immediately reached for comment. In an interview on Fox News Wednesday night, Trump repeated his claim without evidence that he declassified the documents and said he had the power to do it “even by thinking about it.” The FBI conducted a court-approved search on Aug. 8 at Trump’s home at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, seizing more than 11,000 documents including about 100 marked as classified. The search was part of a federal investigation into whether Trump illegally removed documents from the White House when he left office in January 2021 after his failed 2020 re-election bid and whether Trump tried to obstruct the probe. Cannon, a Trump appointee herself, appointed Dearie to serve as special master in the case at Trump’s request, despite the Justice Department’s objections about a special master. Cannon tasked Dearie with reviewing all of the materials, including classified ones, so that he can separate anything that could be subject to attorney-client privilege or executive privilege – a legal doctrine that shields some White House communications from disclosure. However, Trump’s lawyers have not made such claims in any of their legal filings, and during a hearing before Dearie on Tuesday, they resisted his request to provide proof that Trump had declassified any records. read more Although the appeals court stressed its ruling was narrow in scope, it nevertheless appeared to sharply rebuke Cannon’s ruling from top to bottom and many of Trump’s legal arguments. “[Trump]has not even attempted to show that he has a need to know the information contained in the classified documents,” the judges wrote. “Nor has he established that the current administration has waived that requirement for these documents.” The Justice Department previously also raised strong objections to Cannon’s demand that Dearie review the seized records for documents possibly covered by executive privilege, noting that Trump is a former president and the records do not belong to him. While it voiced disagreement, however, the Justice Department did not appeal that portion of Cannon’s order. It is not clear if prosecutors may separately seek to appeal other parts of Cannon’s ruling on the special master appointment. “We decide only the traditional equitable considerations, including whether the United States has shown a substantial likelihood of prevailing on the merits, the harm each party might suffer from a stay, and where the public interest lies,” the appeals court said. Clark County Council OKs Creation Of Department To Manage Jail The Columbian

Clark County Council OKs Creation Of Department To Manage Jail – The Columbian https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/clark-county-council-oks-creation-of-department-to-manage-jail-the-columbian/ Sheriff candidates: Councilors made decision without enough input Published: September 21, 2022, 5:20pm The Clark County Law Enforcement Center. (The Columbian files) Despite requests from the public, including Clark County sheriff candidates Rey Reynolds and John Horch, to postpone its decision, the Clark County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved creating a new Jail Services department that will take over management of the county jail. County Manager Kathleen Otto said this is only the first step in a lengthy process. A timeline for the transition has yet to be created but should be made available in the coming weeks. “We all know the jail has had numerous issues. However, it seems with 50 days to go until the election, with three new councilors coming in and a new sheriff, that this issue should be discussed further,” Horch told the council. With the proposal to transfer management of the jail from the sheriff to a Jail Services department brought forward last week, Horch said stakeholders haven’t had time to consider all the issues. Reynolds also voiced his objections to the management change and asked the council to wait until after the November general election. “I’m completely against this jail takeover at this time,” he told the council. Reynolds said there are well-known, major issues at the jail but said “this is not the answer” to those problems. “This will diminish the capacity of our law enforcement, which is already abysmal. If you vote to take away the jail from the sheriff, it will take away from the voice of the people who elect the sheriff to run law enforcement and the jail in the county,” Reynolds said. One lingering question is why the management change was proposed last week. When asked, Otto said in an email sent Monday that there have been several conversations over the years about a transition, but she didn’t explain further. “This transition will allow countywide resource allocations and partnerships; therefore, the sheriff can focus specifically on law enforcement in our community,” Otto told the council. “This model has been proven successful with other large jurisdictions within the state, including Spokane, King County and SCORE (South Correctional Entity), which provides jail services to six cities just south of Seattle.” Otto said another benefit would be the creation of an advisory board that includes representatives from law enforcement, other jurisdictions and mental health providers. Several individuals commenting during Tuesday’s meeting raised concerns about the county privatizing management of the jail and whether the change was being made to generate revenue for the county. “No employee will be displaced as a result of this potential transition. It is not being recommended to privatize the jail,” Otto said at the meeting. “No one has mentioned the word ‘privatization’ until tonight. I don’t know where that came from,” Councilor Gary Medvigy said. “I assure all in the room, especially those who are working in corrections, we’re looking at solutions and models of other counties.” Medvigy said the council wants to have the safest and best possible working environment that also benefits inmates. In an interview Tuesday, Horch said he was still waiting to see details for the transition and had many questions, but his main concern is the impact the move would have on sheriff’s office employees. “I want to make sure no current sheriff’s office employees lost their jobs, and there are safe working conditions for the people who work here and also for the inmates,” Horch said. “Is this best for the public?” If elected, Horch said, he would work with the county council and manager to ensure that the change in management is done effectively and safely. He said he wouldn’t be surprised to see the transition take up to a year to complete. In addition to all the activities related to housing inmates, such as providing meals and medical care, jail staff have to coordinate transfers to and from other jurisdictions, transfer inmates to the courthouse for hearings and trials, coordinate with federal authorities, and more. Horch said ensuring that those activities continue to be done correctly will require significant coordination. “There’s a lot of moving parts. It’s not just putting a new patch on. There are so many different areas,” Horch said. Reynolds did not respond to requests for comment. Councilor Richard Rylander said that while it might appear to the public the transition has been rushed and was only recently brought forward, that is not the case. “My perception is there has been investigative work — work in the background prior to my joining the council,” he said. “There’s been effort there, and it’s not just we suddenly have to do something today. It’s been coming.” No timeline yet The next step for the county, according to Otto, will be to develop a transition plan and timeline. “If approved tonight, we will start that conversation tomorrow and start bringing people to the table. We have not developed a timeline because we didn’t want to put the cart before the horse before we had this conversation,” Otto said. She said Spokane’s transition took about eight months to finish, although other counties have completed it sooner. “I don’t want to put a specific time on this, because we want to get it right. We want to ensure continuity of service; we want to make sure our employees there are heard, that the sheriff is at the table, that human resources is there, the public is there,” she said.

Vietnamese Fans Foot Big Bills For Football World Cup Tours – VnExpress International https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/vietnamese-fans-foot-big-bills-for-football-world-cup-tours-vnexpress-international/ By Thanh Thuy  &nbspSeptember 21, 2022 | 04:43 pm PT The official logo for the 2022 Qatar World Cup is seen on the Doha Tower, in Doha, Qatar, September 3, 2019. Photo by Reuters/Naseem Zeitoun Travel agencies say tours to Qatar for the 2022 World Cup at prices ranging from VND170 to 320 million ($7,260-13,500) per person have nearly sold out. Tran Thanh, 43, in Hanoi, a big fan of Argentine striker Lionel Messi, said that after he failed to book a hotel room in Doha, he contacted tour operators to buy a package to watch a match between Argentina and Mexico during the World Cup competition. However, tour packages involving his favorite match were sold out, so he was considering watching another match. A VnExpress survey found tour prices to Qatar during the World Cup season can cost up to VND320 million per person for a four-day itinerary, including entry tickets to watch a match. Travel agencies said the prices include an itinerary to discover Qatar that costs VND150 million while the entrance fee to watch a World Cup match ranges from VND20 to 150 million depending on the match and seat position. The prices are the highest ever for World Cup packages, the agencies acknowledged. In 2018 when the World Cup was held in Russia, a similar tour only cost VND80 to 100 million. “The costs of hotel rooms, air tickets and visa fees were raised immediately after FIFA announced the World Cup would be held in Qatar. It was also very difficult for tour operators to reach an agreement with partners,” said Nguyen Hai, who is in charge of selling Qatar tours for Hanoi-based Dat Viet Tour. “Due to limited hotel options, we had to pay a higher price for early reservation,” Hai added. Despite expensive tour prices and willingness to foot big bills, many Vietnamese fans have not been able to book the tour desired. Hai said that for each match, his company only provides a maximum of 25 seats; and some “hot” matches were sold out a few months ago, leaving many Vietnamese football fans disappointed. A representative of HCMC-based tour operator Vacation Travel said that they had already sold out 15 tour packages to Qatar to watch the World Cup matches with prices starting at VND199 million per person. HCMC-based agency Hong Ngoc Ha Travel has sold tours to more than 200 customers so far and they have transferred 100% of the ticket prices. The reason many Vietnamese fans choose to buy a package tour is that booking a hotel on their own during the peak tourism season is next to impossible. Ngo Tran Hai An, a freelance reporter who will cover the 2022 World Cup, said that he could not book a hotel room in Doha for the World Cup season. “The capital Doha is quite small and most of the hotels are full. Some people have to go to Dubai to stay or rent a room, though this would be inconvenient and cost more, there is no other choice,” said An. The 2022 World Cup will take place from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar. It is expected that nearly 2 million people will travel to Doha during the event. Qatar had earlier announced all foreign nationals seeking to enter Qatar as visitors will need to carry a “Hayya” Card as of November 1, 2022. Visitors must hold match tickets in order to qualify for the Hayya, which can be applied for online. For foreign nationals entering Qatar as visitors, the Hayya card will serve as both an entry permit and a stadium access pass. In addition to holding FIFA tickets, foreign visitors will also need to confirm their accommodations in order to obtain a Hayya. Rolison, a Republican who has been the mayor of Poughkeepsie since 2016, told the audience that “The one-party rule in Albany isn’t working,” when it comes to regulating business, creating energy policies, and keeping the public safe.  Prior to becoming mayor, the lifelong Poughkeepsie resident served on the Dutchess County Legislature for 12 years, including a tenure as the body’s chairman. Julie Shiroishi speaking to members of the Dutchess County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Shiroishi, a Beacon resident since 2007, had a career in newspaper and book publishing until transitioning to a freelance writer to spend more time with her young children. In 2019 she became the Chief of Staff for Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson.  Shiroishi stayed with Jacobson until May of this year when she decided to make her first run for public office.  “It was a tremendous opportunity to have worked in state government,” Shiroishi said.  “I’ve had the opportunity to see how state government works and I have had the opportunity to help constituents.” Rolison blamed state policies for the rise in crime across New York.  The mayor intimated that changing the laws would help reduce crime and giving businesses a chance to thrive in a safe environment.  “There is a crime problem in this state,” he said, adding “bail reform has limited the capabilities of police officers to do their jobs of keeping the public safe.” Shiroishi called on the need for changes in public education.  The need, according to Shiroishi, is for middle-school students to be presented with opportunities and training that make them ready to enter the regional workforce when they graduate high school.  “Too many people are graduating from college with hundreds of thousands of dollars of debt,” she said, noting that many jobs in the region do not require college degrees and still pay good wages. The new 39th senate district includes the Dutchess County municipalities of Beacon, Beekman, East Fishkill, Fishkill, LaGrange, Pawling, City of Poughkeepsie, Town of Poughkeepsie, Union Vale, and Wappinger.  In Putnam County, the district includes Philipstown and Putnam Valley.  In Orange County, the Towns of Montgomery and Newburgh along with the City of Newburgh are in the 39th senate district.

Reduce Your Stroke Risk With These 7 Tips AARP
Reduce Your Stroke Risk With These 7 Tips – AARP https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/reduce-your-stroke-risk-with-these-7-tips-aarp/ But among all genetic risk profiles — low and high — those who followed Life’s Simple 7 had a 30 to 43 percent lower risk of stroke than those who did not adhere to the behaviors. That corresponds to nearly six additional years lived free of stroke. “This study shows that you could do an amazing amount of risk reduction by living a healthy lifestyle, regardless of your genetic status,” says Cheryl Bushnell, M.D., a neurologist at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, who was not involved in the study. “That’s really the bottom line.” See more Health & Wellness offers Lowering your risk for stroke can have additional health benefits too, research shows. For example, it can help protect your brain, since stroke is one of the strongest known risk factors for dementia, according to a report from AARP’s Global Council on Brain Health. “When you adopt these healthy cardiovascular behaviors,” Fornage says, “you essentially maintain your brain health and do good for your heart as well.” Nationwide about 10 percent of the 50-plus population, or 7.6 million people, have suffered a stroke at some point in their lives, Bushnell says, citing statistics from the AHA’s annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics report. But the risk, she notes, increases “dramatically” with age: 2.5 percent of adults ages 40 to 59 have suffered a stroke, versus 6 percent of those ages 60 to 79 and 13 percent of those over age 80. As for how many people are genetically at risk for stroke, “that’s a difficult thing to answer,” Bushnell says, adding that researchers have identified 32 distinct genes associated with stroke. “The interesting thing, though, is that most of them are linked in some way to other factors, like blood pressure or cholesterol,” she says. In other words, lifestyle plays a role in triggering stroke, even for those with a genetic predisposition. The damaging effects of stroke However a stroke occurs, it can have dramatic consequences. “It’s often long-term disability, but it can be death,” Fornage says. In fact, stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What goes wrong depends on the type of stroke and the part of the brain that’s affected, Bushnell says. Sometimes stroke attacks vision or leaves a person with tingling or weakness. Some people, after a stroke, have difficulty swallowing, or get a frozen shoulder, or stiffness and spasms in a weak limb. “It’s not something that anybody wants to have to deal with long-term,” she adds. And that first stroke can cause more complications, because now the person is often moving less, which can lead to infection, heart disease and more blood clots. “Having a stroke is a life-changing event,” Bushnell says.

MAYVILLE — The lawyers representing a New Jersey man accused of stabbing famed author Salman Rushdie last month at Chautauqua Institution will be provided the names and contact information of potential witnesses. But that information cannot be shared with their client, Hadi Matar, until just prior to trial. Following a closed hearing Wednesday, Chautauqua County Court Judge David Foley granted a protective order at the request of District Attorney Jason Schmidt. The DA had sought to shield the names and contact information of potential witnesses due to concerns over their safety following the Aug. 12 attack at Chautauqua. Schmidt has alluded to a fatwa that was issued on Rushdie’s life for a book he wrote in 1988, “The Satanic Verses.” Matar’s attorney, Public Defender Ned Barone, opposed the protective order and has stated multiple times that prosecutors have failed to show that potential witnesses faced a threat. Barone, though not Matar, was inside the courtroom during Wednesday’s hearing, which lasted about a half hour. Afterward, and with Matar present, Foley granted Schmidt’s request for the protective order. “I do find that Mr. Schmidt has made a good cause showing of a risk of potential threats or intimidation,” Foley said. “I am mindful of the fact that Mr. Matar does need to participate and to be able to discuss matters with Mr. Barone and the defense team regarding the discoverable material.” Foley said prosecutors will have to provide the contact information on “factual witnesses” to the defense team. Those include “live witnesses to the incident, those individuals who rendered aid to Mr. Rushdie, rendered aid to Mr. (Henry) Reese, assisted in subduing Mr. Matar, medically treated Mr. Rushdie, medically treated Mr. Reese, provided hospital transport services for Mr. Rushdie and Mr. Reese, and to individuals who observed Mr. Matar prior to and immediately following the incident, excluding any law enforcement officers who responded to the scene.” While Barone and his defense team will be provided the information shortly, Foley said it cannot be shared with Matar until just prior to the trial. Schmidt will have to turn over redacted information that Matar can review. Today’s breaking news and more in your inbox

The Metaverse, Cryptocurrency And NFTs Set To Revolutionise Retail – ChannelLife New Zealand https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/the-metaverse-cryptocurrency-and-nfts-set-to-revolutionise-retail-channellife-new-zealand/ BigCommerce has released its Global Consumer Report: Current and Future Shopping Trends, a consumer survey designed to give retailers insight into current and emerging trends shaping the way consumers buy from brands. According to the researchers, the metaverse, cryptocurrency and NFTs are poised to revolutionise commerce in some form or another, while personalised shopping experiences and incentives, such as free shipping and discounts, are key factors driving purchases. Fashion and apparel was by far the most popular category for online shoppers. Key insights from the survey revealed: More than half of consumers shop online at least once a week (55%), with fashion and apparel as the most purchased items. As for discounts, they prefer free shipping above anything else. Consumers who use buy now, pay later (BNPL) do so because they say it helps to fit purchases into their budget. Consumers want personalised shopping experiences and advertisements, and are most willing to share their email, gender and name with brands. Honesty and transparency are the brand values consumers look for most, but providing fair wages and benefits to employees was a close second. The majority of consumers (84%) rated sustainability as important when making a purchasing decision. Almost half (46%) of consumers are willing to shop on the metaverse, and of those, 51% are interested in buying both virtual and physical goods. Lisa Eggerton, Chief Marketing Officer at BigCommerce, says, “BigCommerce is powered by innovation that gives our merchants the competitive advantage to outperform their competition and thrive in the new era of ecommerce. These findings show technological advances are reshaping the shoppers journey and providing new and better ways for brands to engage with their customers. The future of commerce is here, and brands have a vibrant opportunity for remarkable growth.” The report uncovered many consumers are shopping online multiple times per week, with 55% of respondents indicating they shop online at least once a week if not more. Of course this shouldn’t be that surprising considering people are shopping on Google more than a billion times a day. As for what consumers are buying online, the report shows that fashion and apparel was by far the most popular category (80%), with electronics coming second (56%) and entertainment and media in third (55%). When consumers were asked which payment methods they’ve used when shopping online, 16% said they’ve used BNPL. Helping consumers fit purchases into their budget was revealed as a primary reason for choosing BNPL. In fact, of those who’ve used BNPL, 34% were more likely to complete a purchase if BNPL was an option, while 49% would find it easier to complete a purchase if BNPL was an option. Digging deeper into shopper motivations, the survey sought to understand how personalisation impacts the decision to buy, as well as what information consumers are willing to share in order to get a personalised shopping experience. 37% of respondents were willing to share data depending on what information was requested, while 30% said it depended on brand and 28% were not willing at all. The survey also revealed that metaverse, cryptocurrency and NFTs are all poised to revolutionise commerce in some form or another. When it comes to metaverse shopping, consumers were about evenly split between willing (46%) and not willing (52%). Yet, a small percentage (2%) had already shopped on the metaverse. Unlike the metaverse, the majority of consumers say they don’t have a good understanding of NFTs, with 26% saying they don’t even know what NFTs are. When asked which payment methods were used when shopping online, 5% of consumers said they have used cryptocurrency. While most people weren’t yet using cryptocurrency, of those who do, a strong majority (66%) preferred it as a payment method. Eggerton concludes, “Our aim in sharing data from the Global Consumer Report is to help brands across these regions better understand consumer buying behaviours. Brands must put consumers at the heart of everything they do or risk losing market share.”

Apple Just Improved Messaging On Your IPhone With 26 New Must-Try Features Gadget Hacks
Apple Just Improved Messaging On Your IPhone With 26 New Must-Try Features Gadget Hacks
Apple Just Improved Messaging On Your IPhone With 26 New Must-Try Features – Gadget Hacks https://clarkcountynewsnow.com/apple-just-improved-messaging-on-your-iphone-with-26-new-must-try-features-gadget-hacks/ If you haven’t noticed yet, there are a lot of new features hiding in your iPhone’s Messages app, and some of them are things users have been requesting for a long time. While iMessage is getting a lot of attention by letting us edit and unsend messages, it’s only just the start of a pretty big update. Some of the new tools and enhancements that come with iOS 16 take direct aim at messaging competitors like Messenger, Signal, Telegram, and WhatsApp, while others take advantage of other services available on iOS, like Siri, Dictation, and Focus. There’s carrier-specific spam reporting, more Memoji options, cool Siri tricks, helpful measurement conversions, and even a few secret actions that’ll be useful in any conversation. Don’t Miss: Your iPhone’s Contacts App Just Got Its Biggest Update Ever Most of these changes also appear on iPadOS 16 for iPad and macOS 13 Ventura for Mac, which are still in beta. 1. Edit Messages You can now edit iMessages after sending them. It’s a helpful tool that can help you quickly correct spelling snafus, auto-correct mistakes, and other erroneous content without bombarding people with follow-up messages to explain the issue. A message can be edited up to five times within 15 minutes of sending it. After five edits or 15 minutes, the option will disappear from the quick actions menu. When edited, an “Edited” label will appear under the message. You or the recipient can then tap “Edited” to view the history of changes. It only works with iMessage, so you can’t correct anything in SMS chats. And recipients using older Apple software will see each edit as a separate iMessage. Full Guide: How to Edit Your Sent iMessages to Fix Spelling Errors and Other Mistakes 2. Unsend Messages Taking back a message you sent is another new feature. When you select “Undo Send” from the quick actions, it shows a “poof” animation that “pops” when the sound is on, disappearing from the conversation for good. It only works in iMessage conversations, and you only have up to two minutes to unsend the message. When you unsend an iMessage, an alert will say “You unsent a message” where the message was. On the other end, it will say, “[Your Name] unsent a message.” Recipients using older Apple software will continue seeing the iMessage you attempted to take back. Full Guide: How to Take Back iMessages You Already Sent So Your Recipients Never See Them 3. Mark Messages as Read or Unread I’ve been waiting for this feature for a long time: the ability to mark messages as unread. That way, you don’t forget to return to that message or group of messages later when you have time to respond. When you mark a message as unread, you only mark it unread on your end. So it’ll still say when you initially read the message if you have “Send Read Receipts” enabled. If you want to skip reading a message but wish to label it as read, you can do that too. The feature works for both iMessage and SMS/MMS texts. To mark messages as read or unread, swipe right on the conversation from the list view (which previously would pin chats). You can also long-press a discussion and choose “Mark as Unread” or “Mark as Read,” which comes in handy for pinned conversations. And you can use the “Edit” button, pick “Select Messages,” choose the discussions, and hit “Read” or “Unread.” If you have “Filter Unknown Senders” enabled in your Messages preferences, you’ll also see a new “Unread Messages” section when you tap “Filter” to switch between unknown and known senders. Full Guide: How to Mark Texts and iMessages as Unread on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac 4. Show and Recover Deleted Messages Similar to Notes, Photos, and Mail, iOS 16 gives you a “Recently Deleted” section in the Messages app. It’s like a trash bin on your computer or email account, only for texts and iMessage. Deleted messages will be wiped from Apple’s servers automatically after 30 days. You can manually erase deleted content sooner too. You can also recover messages if you accidentally delete something or change your mind. Tap “Edit” in the conversations list, then “Show Recently Deleted” to view, delete, or recover content. If you have “Filter Unknown Senders” enabled in your Messages preferences, tap “Filter” and open the “Recently Deleted” folder. Full Guide: How to Erase or Recover Deleted Texts and iMessages on Your iPhone, iPad, or Mac 5. Mark SMS/MMS as Spam You could always report iMessages from unknown senders as junk to Apple, but you had to report SMS and MMS texts as junk to your carrier, which isn’t always the most straightforward task. Now, Apple’s included the “Report Junk” feature for SMS and MMS texts, which reports the message as spam to Apple and a supported carrier. Not all carriers support the feature, so if you don’t see it, that’s why. 6. Mention Suggestions When you’d use the @ symbol to mention someone in a group chat — or even if you just spelled their name out without the @ sign — iOS 15 wouldn’t show you anything except the color change animation when you hit enter. You could also tap the name in the text field to show their profile picture. That all still applies on iOS 16, but now you’ll also see the person’s name and profile icon in the suggestions on the keyboard. 7. More Memoji Styling Options If you like using Memoji, more customization options are available on iOS 16. Specifically, there are 14 new hairstyles, three updated hairstyles, nine new nose designs, a bonnet headwear option, and three new neutral lip colors. Full Guide: Memoji Gets a Big Update on iOS 16 — Here’s Everything That’s New 8. New Expressions for Memoji Stickers What kind of update would it be without something new for Memoji?! On iOS 16, six new expressive poses exist for all your custom Memoji. As long as you have “Memoji Stickers” enabled in your keyboard settings, these options will be available in their usual “Frequently Used” spot to the left of the emoji. You can also access them via the Memoji Stickers button in the app drawer. 9. Assign Any Memoji Sticker as a Contact Picture Before, there were 12 unique sticker poses for Animoji and Memoji when using them as profile pictures for contacts or as your iMessage photo, but you couldn’t use any of the stickers available from Memoji Stickers. That’s no longer the case. Now, you can use any of those unique poses for profile photos or any one of the available Memoji Sticker options. You’ll see the ones you’ve assigned to contacts in the Message app. As before, you can change profile pictures for your contacts right from the Messages thread; Tap the user at the top of the conversation, choose “info,” then “Edit,” tap the profile image, and choose the Memoji you want. To change your iMessage photo, go to Settings – Messages – Share Name and Photo. 10. More Poses for Contact Pictures Speaking of unique sticker poses for contact photos and profile pictures, there are three more unique poses available. While you won’t get to message them to people in chats, you can still assign the poses to your profile or a contact’s profile. 11. Unread Messages Alerts in the Contacts Widget While it’s not a Messages-only feature, the updated Contacts widget will now tell you if you have any unread messages or missed FaceTime or phone calls from them. More Info: Contacts Shows Unread Messages/Missed Call Alerts in the Widget 12. SharePlay While Messaging Apple introduced SharePlay starting with iOS and iPadOS 15.1, which lets you share synchronized experiences in other apps with other people over FaceTime. Now, you can also share synchronized activities in other apps via Messages. You could watch a movie together, listen to music, play a game, and work out side by side while chatting in Messages, to name just a few examples, complete with shared playback controls. To start a SharePlay, bring up the share sheet for the content, tap “SharePlay,” and choose the contacts to invite. Then, instead of tapping “FaceTime,” tap “Messages” and send the message. You’ll each see a “Start” button in the floating SharePlay controls when they join. Don’t Miss: Every App You Can Use FaceTime’s SharePlay Feature with Right Now Image via Apple 13. Richer Collaboration on Projects Starting with iOS 16, you can work on projects more efficiently with coworkers, students, and collaborators from within Messages. To invite a person or group in Messages to collaborate on your project, you select them from the share sheet, then send the invite. Everyone in that chat gets immediate access to start working on the project in real time. You’ll get notifications for any changes to the document you miss, and new activity will be at the top of the conversation in Messages. You can tap “Show” to jump to the document and see the changes. From the project, you can return to Messages or start a FaceTime call with everybody. Richer collaboration via Messages works with Apple apps like Keynote, Numbers, Pages, Notes, Reminders, and Safari (for Tab Groups). Third-party developers can use Apple’s Messages Collaboration API to include support for the feature in their apps. Image via Apple While not yet available in the betas, Apple will also use Messages Collaboration in its new Freeform product. The new whiteboarding app will let everyone with access to a shared project make notes on a digital whiteboard canvas, draw diagrams, embed images, and more. It’s “coming later this year.” 14. New Audio Messages App On iOS 15, you could record and send voice messages via the audio button in the text entry field of conversation. The option in the text entry field is now for dictation on iOS 16, and there’s a new app just for audio messages, available from the Messages app drawer. A microphone button appears when you tap the icon ...
