Rhizome | Art in Your Pocket 2 : Media Art for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad Graduates To The Next Level
In the summer of 2009, I wrote an article here at Rhizome about the burgeoning activities of media artists creating new works or updating versions of their older interactive screen-based projects for Apple's iPhone and iTouch mobile devices. As the article made its way throughout the blogosphere, comments surfaced ranging from criticism of the "closed world of Apple's App Store and iPhone devices" to a championing of the availability of inexpensive multi-touch technology now available to artists who had been waiting for a platform that could adequately display and allow for the type of interaction their projects demanded. A year after the article came out, the draw of these devices and their potentially expansive audience has become even more irresistible to artists enough so that several more "apps" have surfaced. The following article catalogs several new iPhone works which have emerged over the past year, works that are pioneering the next generation of portable media art.

New Media Initiatives » Building the Walker’s mobile website with Google AppEngine, part 1
Over the summer, our department made a small but significant policy change. We decided to take a cue from Google’s 20% time philosophy and spend one day a week working on a Walker-related project of our choosing. Essentially, we wanted to embark on quicker, more nimble projects that hold more interest for our team. The project I decided to experiment with was making a mobile website for the Walker, m.walkerart.org.

ConnectTweet - Groups and businesses are made up of many people, ConnectTweet combines your voices on Twitter.
ConnectTweet facilitates your voices combining. More on why I built ConnectTweet here. For example... say people at the front lines inside your company add a #tag to their company relevant tweets, ConnectTweet can suck them up and post them to @yourorg's Twitter account allowing the company's followers to clearly see the human voices on the inside. ConnectTweet allows the contributors to your central Twitter stream to continue to use their personal accounts that they are familiar with, no new logins to remember. This approach also allows your organization's followers to discover the Twitter streams of the unique individuals that make up your company.

What we launched as an experimental feature for the Documents List Data API last year is now available on the upload page: check the “Convert text from PDF or image files to Google Docs documents”, upload your scanned images (JPEG, GIF, PNG) or PDFs, and Google Docs will extract text and formatting from the scans for you to edit away.

Mattress Factory | Weblog: QR Codes : A Visitor's Resource Guide
As a follow-up to Lindsay's post from yesterday, I thought I'd provide some background and resources for visitors who might like to participate with the QR technology we've recently rolled-out in the galleries. The symbol you see to the below is a QR code, or two-dimensional bar code that contains information. QR codes can be read by most 3G mobile phones with a camera and bar code-reading application. The "QR" stands for "Quick Response," because the information contained in the code can be quickly, easily and reliably accessed in a matter of seconds. In an attempt to reduce the quantity of printed gallery guides we produce, we've placed several of these codes throughout the museum. Each code contains different information; some access video of artists talking about the piece the visitor is viewing or video of the artist installing the work, some display still images and background information, while others contain short anecdotal text messages about the pieces they are near.

HackCollege - Student-Powered Lifehacking
Lectures are boring and inefficient. Long hours spent studying hand-written notes is very 1994. Anyone graduating today needs to know not how to operate a computer, but when. The fault is both with the students and the teachers. HackCollege is changing education. HackCollege is educating the students of the world about effective, open source software, putting techno-political arguments in everyday language, and creating a cult of "Students 2.0." If we can change the way 1 percent of college students and faculty in the world view education and technology, we've done our job.

Building a Better Submission Form - Open Blog - NYTimes.com
f you participated in our invitation to photograph a “Moment in Time” earlier in May, you used our new photo submission software, which we call Stuffy. Built to enable users to upload media files — and to allow our producers to review uploaded files quickly — Stuffy uses a “NoSQL” storage engine to make customized forms simple. In the application, a form serves two purposes: to tell the application what fields to display in the form, and to collect submissions for the application. So we made the move to a simple NoSQL storage engine — a schema-less, fully customizable data store. Each document can have its own set of fields, but there’s none of the traditional overhead of relational database systems. Document-oriented databases also offer speed and scalability, which is a high priority for NYTimes.com.
