Viberary
Viberary
Viberary is a search engine that recommends you books based not on genre or title, but vibe by performing semantic search across a set of learned embeddings on a dataset of books from Goodreads and their metadata. It returns a list of book recommendations based on the vibe of the book that you put in. So you don't put in "I want science fiction", you'd but in "atmospheric, female lead, worldbuilding, funny" as a prompt, and get back a list of books. This project came out of experiences I had where recommendations for movies, TV, and music have fairly been good, but book recommendations are always a problem. Here is my (@cogdog) attempt and the results have a good vibe! https://viberary.pizza/search?query=Smart+talking+animals

Real-Real-World Programming with ChatGPT – O’Reilly
Real-Real-World Programming with ChatGPT – O’Reilly
If you’re reading this, chances are you’ve played around with using AI tools like ChatGPT or GitHub Copilot to write code for you. Or even if you haven’t yet, then you’ve at least heard about these tools in your newsfeed over the past year. So far I’ve read a gazillion blog posts about people’s experiences with these AI coding assistance tools. These posts often recount someone trying ChatGPT or Copilot for the first time with a few simple prompts, seeing how it does for some small self-contained coding tasks, and then making sweeping claims like “WOW this exceeded all my highest hopes and wildest dreams, it’s going to replace all programmers in five years!” or “ha look how incompetent it is … it couldn’t even get my simple question right!” I really wanted to go beyond these quick gut reactions that I’ve seen so much of online, so I tried using ChatGPT for a few weeks to help me implement a hobby software project and took notes on what I found interesting. This article summarizes what I learned from that experience. The inspiration (and title) for it comes from Mike Loukides’ Radar article on Real World Programming with ChatGPT, which shares a similar spirit of digging into the potential and limits of AI tools for more realistic end-to-end programming tasks.

MastoGizmos -- Exploration and Search Tools for Mastodon
MastoGizmos -- Exploration and Search Tools for Mastodon
Mastodon is a decentralized social network, meaning its content is scattered across many servers across the Internet. There is no one place that indexes all Mastodon's information and makes it searchable. But that doesn't mean there's no way to search Mastodon's content. Its servers are indexed by Google, after all. Further, Mastodon's API, its use of RSS feeds, and the availability of other tools like Instances.Social mean that it's possible to build search tools that reach across the fediverse. Across the entire fediverse, into every nook and cranny? No. But I think you'll be surprised at how much you find. Created by the wizards from @ResearchBuzzh@researchbuzz.masto.host

Tiny Awards, a celebration of the small, playful, and heartfelt web - Waxy.org
Tiny Awards, a celebration of the small, playful, and heartfelt web - Waxy.org
In May, the creators of two of my favorite newsletters, Naive Weekly and Web Curios, reached out to see if I’d consider joining the selection committee of Tiny Awards, a tiny prize to honor websites that “best embodies the idea of a small, playful and heartfelt web.” I loved the idea and quickly accepted. There were some additional rules: sites must have launched in the last 12 months, work on mobile and desktop without requiring an app or download, made by individuals or a group of creators (i.e. not agencies or brands), and should be primarily non-commercial. Nominations were free and open to the public, unlike some other web awards, and the selection committee ended up reviewing over 270 submissions, which we narrowed down to a shortlist of 16 finalists, a wonderfully eclectic collection of websites.

explain xkcd
explain xkcd
is a site that explains many of the obscure references in Randall Munroe's amazing xkcd webcomic (https://xkcd.com/). This is a fantastic example of a fan/crowd-sourced effort to add context and meaning to a body of work, much enabled because the xkcd comic is shared openly under a Creative Commons license. explain xkcd was originally a blog, created in July 2009 by Mike and mostly written by Jeff (@jeff_underscore), who posted explanations of xkcd comics, occasionally helped by his friend Berg (@ActuallyBerg) and by Mike. The blog gradually developed a significant following, and much interaction happened in the comments, especially for complex comics, where commenters pieced together all parts of Randall's epic comics which would have taken way too much time for Jeff to do alone. Eventually, several people in the comments started calling for the blog to be converted to a wiki, allowing its followers to chime in with corrections and even full explanations when Jeff would have less time. While other xkcd wikis had been attempted before, none had managed to gain enough traction. explain xkcd, on the other hand, had a sizable community of commenters, which gave it better chances of pulling it off. In December 2011 Jeff trialled a new project where people could submit explanations for old comics (published prior to the start of the blog), which he posted with due credit. After a while, Jeff decided to make the switch and on 10 July 2012 this wiki was created. The announcement was made on the blog a few days later. The wiki has been gradually collecting explanations for all 2795 xkcd comics and everything xkcd-related. h/t to Jan Gondol for referencing in OEG Connect

Emerging Architectures for LLM Applications | Andreessen Horowitz
Large language models are a powerful new primitive for building software. But since they are so new—and behave so differently from normal computing resources—it’s not always obvious how to use them. In this post, we’re sharing a reference architecture for the emerging LLM app stack. It shows the most common systems, tools, and design patterns we’ve seen used by AI startups and sophisticated tech companies. This stack is still very early and may change substantially as the underlying technology advances, but we hope it will be a useful reference for developers working with LLMs now. h/t to @opencontent for sharing in twitter

It's a tool that brings attention and understanding to how color contrast can affect different people with visual impairments. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) covers a wide range of recommendations for making Web content more accessible. Just a tiny part of making the web more accessible is accommodating for those with a form of blindness or low vision. The standard grading system is a great start, but I thought I'd try to humanize the people who are affected by the different grades.

Global CTX Mosaic of Mars
Global CTX Mosaic of Mars
The Bruce Murray Laboratory for Planetary Visualization has completed a 5.7 terapixel mosaic of the surface of Mars rendered at 5.0 m/px. Each pixel in the mosaic is about the size of a typical parking space, providing unprecedented resolution of the martian surface at the global scale. The mosaic covers 99.5% of Mars from 88°S to 88°N. The pixels that make up the mosaic can all be mapped back to their source data, providing full traceability for the entire mosaic. The mosaic is available to stream over the internet and to download, as described below. All data in the mosaic come from the Context Camera (CTX) onboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). (This is cool, but I also have to test my cooltech tagging syustem!)

The Infinite Conversation
The Infinite Conversation
As of late 2022, it's cheap and easy to produce AI-generated content that is superficially good and surprisingly similar to "the real thing". This applies to videos resembling celebrities (commonly known as Deepfakes) or, as in the case of the Infinite Conversation, speech. This project aims to raise awareness about the ease of using tools for synthesizing a real voice. Right now, any motivated fool can do this with a laptop in their bedroom. This changes our relationship with the media we consume online and raises questions about the importance of authoritative sources, breach of trust and gullibility. Will this technology lead to a massive proliferation of sub-optimal-quality content? Should we simply distrust anything we see online? As new tools are developed to help identify generated content, I recommend maintaining a skeptical stance, particularly when the source/channel of information doesn't seem reliable and when the claims seem preposterous or outrageous. Ultimately, I don't see this as a technical problem, but as a human one. We all share a duty to educate the coming generations about the new paradigm while focusing on forming compassionate individuals who would not misuse these awesome powers. As an AI optimist, I remain hopeful that we will be able to regulate ourselves, and that we will take experiments such as the Infinite Conversation for what they are: a playful way to help us imagine what our favorite people would do, if we had unlimited access to their minds. Art and Philosophy, here exemplified by Bavarian director Werner Herzog and Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Žižek, can guide us while navigating these treacherous waters. h/t @grantpotter
