This Voice Does Not Exist
This Voice Does Not Exist
Hello, friend. This website presents computer-generated voices, none of which are real. They are created by an artificial intelligence. We invite you to take a listen. This website presents a variety of aspects regarding audio synthesis, deepfakes, and deepfake detection. Maybe most importantly, we show results of current state-of-the-art audio synthesis algorithms: We create a set of sentences which are spoken by an artificial intelligence (AI). However, the AI does not simply reproduce audio recordings based on the training data; it creates entirely new speakers. Thus, for every sentence you hear, the corresponding speaker (along with its vocal tonality) does not exist!

Riffusion
Riffusion
You've heard of Stable Diffusion, the open-source AI model that generates images from text? Well, we fine-tuned the model to generate images of spectrograms. The magic is that this spectrogram can then be converted to an audio clip. It can generate infinite variations of a prompt by varying the seed. All the same web UIs and techniques like img2img, inpainting, negative prompts, and interpolation work out of the box. Idyll
Idyll
Idyll can be used to create explorable explanations, write data-driven stories, and add interactivity to blog engines and content management systems. The tool can generate standalone webpages or be embedded in existing pages. Choose from built-in themes or provide custom CSS. Idyll starts with the same principles as markdown, and uses a lot of the same syntax. If you want text to appear in your output, just start writing. The real power of Idyll comes when you want to use JavaScript to enrich your writing. Special syntax allows you to embed JavaScript inline with your text. Idyll comes with a variety of components that can be used out-of-the-box to create rich documents.

Mellotron | Sodaphonic
Mellotron | Sodaphonic
he Mellotron acted as a primative sample playback device as it used recordings of actual strings, choirs, and flutes. When a key was pressed, a piece of magnetic tape was pulled over a playhead to hear the recorded sound. Here, the Mellotron has been recreated in the browser, obviously not using tape but the latest technology available - the Web Audio API and Dolby Digital Plus. Each sample has been recorded directly from an original Mellotron, coverted to 5.1 surround sound, and presented here in the Dolby Digital Plus format. Enjoy!

NUKEMAP by Alex Wellerstein
NUKEMAP by Alex Wellerstein
The NUKEMAP is aimed at helping people visualize nuclear weapons on terms they can make sense of — helping them to get a sense of the scale of the bombs. By allowing people to use arbitrarily picked geographical locations, I hope that people will come to understand what a nuclear weapon would do to places they are familiar with, and how the different sizes of nuclear weapons change the results. There are many different political interpretations one can legitimately take away from such results. There is not intended to be a simple political "message" of the NUKEMAP. (h/t to Steve Foerster)

Victorian-Era People Who Never Existed: These Portraits Were AI-Generated | PetaPixel
An artist used the latest version of AI image generator Midjourney to create these ultra photorealistic images of people in the 19th century. Mario Cavalli shared the remarkable images he created with the machine learning artificial intelligence tool and tells PetaPixel that they are straight from Midjourney with no Photoshop work. “Midjourney v4 came out recently, I think it is currently the best [image generator] around,” says Cavalli. “The faux Victorian images are purely text prompt driven. I built on and adapted prompts developed by Everton Lisboa and Ben Roffelson.”

How to Post to Mastodon From Anything Using IFTTT
How to Post to Mastodon From Anything Using IFTTT
I finally managed to hook up IFTTT to Mastodon to auto-post from another site! I use IFTTT as glue for linking several services together including sharing interesting links from Pocket when I’m offline: I can add a tag in the app on my tablet, and then when it syncs that tag up to the cloud, IFTTT will pick it up and create the share post on whichever service I’ve tagged it for.* I also use it to post from RSS and WordPress to publish new blog posts to services that aren’t available in Jetpack. (note if this sends to both twitter and mastodon, I am cooking with my IFTTT!)

App creates time-lapse videos with a smartphone | Cornell Chronicle
App creates time-lapse videos with a smartphone | Cornell Chronicle
An app developed by Cornell researchers uses augmented reality to help users repeatedly capture images from the same location with a phone or tablet to make time-lapse videos – without leaving a camera on site. Time-lapse photography, which involves combining photos taken over long periods of time, provides a powerful way to visualize phenomena such as changing seasons or the movement of the sun. Traditionally, photographers would leave a camera on a tripod for the duration of the event, but researchers working with Abe Davis, assistant professor of computer science in the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, have developed a more convenient method. Their iOS app, ReCapture, is now freely available in the Apple app store.
