The art of storytelling | Pixar in a Box (Khan Academy)
What makes a story great?  What makes someone a good storyteller?  Storytelling is something we all do naturally, starting at a young age, but there’s a difference between good storytelling and great storytelling.  In this lesson you’ll hear from Pixar directors and story artists about how they got their start and what stories inspire them, and you’ll begin to think about what kinds of stories you might want to tell.

6 Truly Free Online Image Editors for Photoshop Effects (No Limitations)
Plenty of free image editors online do wondrous things like remove backgrounds from photos or upscale picture sizes. But usually, these have some restrictions. You'll find limitations like only editing five images in the free account or exporting images at a really low resolution. So we set out to find free online image editors with no restrictions or limitations that don't affect a normal user. With these tools, you'll be able to remove backgrounds or watermarks, clear out one object from a photo, upscale images to a higher resolution with no loss, and even batch-edit multiple photos.

The Code4Lib Journal – Lantern: A Pandoc Template for OER Publishing
The Code4Lib Journal – Lantern: A Pandoc Template for OER Publishing
Lantern is a template and workflow for using Pandoc and GitHub to create and host multi-format open educational resources (OER) online. It applies minimal computing methods to OER publishing practices. The purpose is to minimize the technical footprint for digital publishing while maximizing control over the form, content, and distribution of OER texts. Lantern uses Markdown and YAML to capture an OER’s source content and metadata and Pandoc to transform it into HTML, PDF, EPUB, and DOCX formats. Pandoc’s options and arguments are pre-configured in a Bash script to simplify the process for users. Lantern is available as a template repository on GitHub. The template repository is set up to run Pandoc with GitHub Actions and serve output files on GitHub Pages for convenience; however, GitHub is not a required dependency. Lantern can be used on any modern computer to produce OER files that can be uploaded to any modern web server.

The Greats is a project of Fine Acts - a non-profit creative studio for global social impact. We believe in the power of art and play. In our work, we think about ways to make people care and act, and we create novel avenues to empower activism.

Mechanical Watch – Bartosz Ciechanowski
Mechanical Watch – Bartosz Ciechanowski
In the world of modern portable devices, it may be hard to believe that merely a few decades ago the most convenient way to keep track of time was a mechanical watch. Unlike their quartz and smart siblings, mechanical watches can run without using any batteries or other electronic components. Over the course of this article I’ll explain the workings of the mechanism seen in the demonstration below. You can drag the device around to change your viewing angle, and you can use the slider to peek at what’s going on inside

OpenBenches
OpenBenches
There are blue plaques to commemorate the famous and influential figures of the past. For everyone else, there are memorial benches. A quiet reminder of the people gone but not forgotten. A spot to rest your weary legs and give silent thanks to “Alice – who loved this park”. OpenBenches.org is a site dedicated to those benches. Take a photo of a bench’s plaque and upload it to the site. It will automatically be added to the map.

Wikipedia / Wikimedia Commons Attribution Generator
This tool makes it easy to reuse images from Wikipedia and the free media archive Wikimedia Commons. (Please note: The current English version of the Attribution Generator is based on a near-verbatim translation of the initial German text snippets, which were drafted with the copyright law of Germany in mind. Especially the parts explaining legal concepts might thus differ from the copyright law situation of other countries.) This tool is designed to help comply with the license conditions and simplify the use of freely licensed content. The tool automatically compiles all relevant license information in to a so-called license notice that has to be published or displayed as closely to the image as reasonably possible (depending on the publication type the license notice can also be placed at another common position e.g. within picture credits in a book or in the opening or final credits of a video). The tool leads you through a short dialogue and compiles all the information that is relevant for generating a correct license notice for your individual use case. After having answered these few questions you can quickly and easily copy the license notice in various formats and paste it into your publication. Currently, the tool covers the re-use in digital and printed works, being the most frequent forms of use. Other uses (e.g. exhibitions, broadcasts, live performances) remain unconsidered for the time being. The tool supports images from Wikipedia and the free media archive Wikimedia Commons that are released under Creative Commons licenses.

The power of seeing only the questions in a piece of writing | by Clive Thompson | Feb, 2022 | UX Collective
The power of seeing only the questions in a piece of writing | by Clive Thompson | Feb, 2022 | UX Collective
I’ve been watching how writers use questions lately, and thought: Hmmm, it’d be cool to see only the questions in a piece of prose. I probably started down this line of thinking because last fall I created a little web tool that removes everything but the punctuation from a piece of writing. That tool wound up being a pretty intriguing type of literary x-ray: I discovered, for example, that I use a ton of parentheticals (and way too many m-dashes). Since I already had the code for that, it wasn’t too hard for me to program a version focuses on questions instead. So here it is — “Only The Questions”, hosted on Glitch …

City of Women London
City of Women London
What would your daily commute look like if it celebrated remarkable women and non-binary people who have shaped our city? Instead of jumping off at Bond Street, Notting Hill Gate, Warren Street, Paddington, Euston Square, Waterloo, Bank or Lancaster Gate, what if you were invited to mind the gap at Audrey Hepburn, Claudia Jones, Virginia Woolf, Mary Seacole, Noor Inayat Khan, Agnes Beckwith, Boudica or Jung Chang? City of Women encourages Londoners to take a second glance at places we might once have taken for granted by reimagining the iconic Underground map. Brought to you by Reni Eddo-Lodge, Rebecca Solnit, and Emma Watson, this new map celebrates the lives of women and non-binary people who have left a lasting impact on the city. Launched on International Women’s Day 2022 in partnership with Transport for London, City of Women replaces the names of familiar stations with household names and unsung heroes from arts, sports, activism, science, media, law, medicine and beyond. Find out more about the lives that have shaped London as this map grows daily over the course of Women’s History Month 2022...

Include diagrams in your Markdown files with Mermaid | The GitHub Blog
A picture tells a thousand words, but up until now the only way to include pictures and diagrams in your Markdown files on GitHub has been to embed an image. We added support for embedding SVGs recently, but sometimes you want to keep your diagrams up to date with your docs and create something as easily as doing ASCII art, but a lot prettier. Mermaid is a JavaScript based diagramming and charting tool that takes Markdown-inspired text definitions and creates diagrams dynamically in the browser. Maintained by Knut Sveidqvist, it supports a bunch of different common diagram types for software projects, including flowcharts, UML, Git graphs, user journey diagrams, and even the dreaded Gantt chart. Working with Knut and also the wider community at CommonMark, we’ve rolled out a change that will allow you to create graphs inline using Mermaid syntax, for example:

The Changing Room Illusion | Best Illusion of the Year Contest
The Changing Room Illusion | Best Illusion of the Year Contest
The Changing Room Illusion is an example of “graduate change blindness,” a phenomenon in which observers are unable to notice changes to the world around them when those changes occur gradually. In virtually all prior cases, gradual change blindness is studied by changing individual objects (e.g., a chimney disappearing or a facial expression shifting). While trying to prepare a novel example of this phenomenon for students, I realized that I could change dozens of items change without observers noticing. Overall, this illusion highlights how people may actually perceive and remember far more of the world around them than they intuitively realize. h/t Jason Kottke https://kottke.org/22/02/the-best-optical-illusions-of-the-year

Relax and listen to the sounds of a randomly selected forest from around the world. People around the world recorded the sounds of their forests, so you can escape into nature, and unwind wherever you are. Take a breath and soak in the forest sounds as they breathe with life and beauty! And while you are here, why not help to grow what keeps us alive? Climate change and governments are destroying our forests. Let’s leave some trees for our grandchildren to climb and make the steps to restore our planet.
