Reducing the cultural bias of AI with one sentence | Cornell Chronicle
Reducing the cultural bias of AI with one sentence | Cornell Chronicle
Cultural values and traditions differ across the globe, but large language models (LLMs), used in text-generating programs such as ChatGPT, have a tendency to reflect values from English-speaking and Protestant European countries. A Cornell-led research team believes there is an easy way to solve that problem. The researchers tested five versions of ChatGPT and found that what they call “cultural prompting” – asking the AI model to perform a task like someone from another part of the world – resulted in reduced bias in responses for the vast majority of the over 100 countries they tested. The findings suggest there could be an easy way for anyone to control AI models to align with their cultural values, they said, to reduce the cultural bias in these widely used systems. “Around the world, people are using tools like ChatGPT directly and indirectly via other applications for learning, work, and communication,” he said, “and just like technology companies make localized keyboards on laptops to adapt to different languages, LLMs need to adapt to different cultural norms and values.” Kizilcec is senior author of “Cultural Bias and Cultural Alignment of Large Language Models,” which published Sept. 17 in PNAS Nexus https://academic.oup.com/pnasnexus/article/3/9/pgae346/7756548

Large language models, explained with a minimum of math and jargon
Today almost everyone has heard about LLMs, and tens of millions of people have tried them out. But, still, not very many people understand how they work. If you know anything about this subject, you’ve probably heard that LLMs are trained to “predict the next word,” and that they require huge amounts of text to do this. But that tends to be where the explanation stops. The details of how they predict the next word is often treated as a deep mystery. One reason for this is the unusual way these systems were developed. Conventional software is created by human programmers who give computers explicit, step-by-step instructions. In contrast, ChatGPT is built on a neural network that was trained using billions of words of ordinary language. As a result, no one on Earth fully understands the inner workings of LLMs. Researchers are working to gain a better understanding, but this is a slow process that will take years—perhaps decades—to complete. Still, there’s a lot that experts do understand about how these systems work. The goal of this article is to make a lot of this knowledge accessible to a broad audience. We’ll aim to explain what’s known about the inner workings of these models without resorting to technical jargon or advanced math. We’ll start by explaining word vectors, the surprising way language models represent and reason about language. Then we’ll dive deep into the transformer, the basic building block for systems like ChatGPT. Finally, we’ll explain how these models are trained and explore why good performance requires such phenomenally large quantities of data.

H5P Pedagogy Guide
H5P Pedagogy Guide
From Penn State University -- The purpose of the H5P Pedagogy Guide is to explore the pedagogical timing—the instances—suitable for H5P interactive functionalities. In face-to-face teaching, there are naturally designated moments where you pause to pose formative comprehension queries, encourage reflection, allow students to engage individually, or facilitate interaction with concepts or procedures. In online, hybrid, or self-paced digital formats, H5P can help you provide similar interactivity at the moment of interactive need. In short, we saw (and had!) a need that we did not find was being met elsewhere: a categorization of H5P stimuli that is both learner-centered and teaching-centered. For learners, this guide is our attempt to provide learner-centered descriptions of selected H5P interactions. For educators, this guide is our attempt to link H5P interactivity to teaching intent.

Recently, an anonymous AI hobbyist discovered that an image synthesis model called Flux can reproduce someone's handwriting very accurately if specially trained to do so. I decided to experiment with the technique using written journals my dad left behind. The results astounded me and raised deep questions about ethics, the authenticity of media artifacts, and the personal meaning behind handwriting itself.

Access to premium AI services is a significant concern for students | Wonkhe
Perhaps the most pressing issue highlighted in the focus group report and the survey data is the question of access to premium AI services. Naima found significant student concerns around the disparities in evidence. This disparity creates an uneven playing field, where academic success could be influenced by a student’s ability to afford advanced AI tools. As one focus group participant put it, “students’ academic help may be determined by their financial resources rather than their academic competence.” The advanced tools and resources available to those who can afford these services can potentially impact academic performance.

How to Monetize a Blog
How to Monetize a Blog
Maintaining a blog can be a lot of work. A single article can take weeks of research, drafting and editing, collecting and producing included materials, etc. It’s not unusual to seek some form of compensation for it, and those rewards require initiative. With a good monetization strategy, it can become a fairly lucrative venture. So let’s talk about monetizing a blog, starting with the most obvious and perhaps easiest avenue: display advertising.

AI worse than humans at summarising information, trial finds
A test of AI for Australia's corporate regulator found that the technology might actually make more work for people, not less. Artificial intelligence is worse than humans in every way at summarising documents and might actually create additional work for people, a government trial of the technology has found. Amazon conducted the test earlier this year for Australia’s corporate regulator the Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) using submissions made to an inquiry. The outcome of the trial was revealed in an answer to a questions on notice at the Senate select committee on adopting artificial intelligence.

An Introduction to Open Educational Resources and Their Implementation in Higher Education Worldwide | Weizenbaum Journal of the Digital Society
The digitization of (higher) education has exposed copyright infringement issues, as the unauthorized use of copyrighted materials has become more visible. This article explores the importance of open educational resources (OER) in higher education, focusing on their development, how they are understood, and the opportunities they offer. OER are defined as learning materials released under open licenses, allowing no-cost access, reuse, adaptation, and redistribution. The article discusses the OER movement, its milestones, and its integration into educational practice. It also presents arguments for OER: they enable free access to education, improve teaching practice, diminish legal issues, and foster open science. In addition, it highlights criticisms, including resistance from traditional publishers and concerns about marketing influence. The article concludes by examining current OER implementation in higher education and its promise of innovation. While OER are increasingly adopted, proprietary resources still dominate. The article emphasizes the need for educators to use open licenses meaningfully and innovatively and presents research on OER acceptance and usage. The monitoring of OER development in higher education is essential, but approaches may vary across countries.

Raw dog the open web!
Monoculture is winning. The Fortune 500 has shrink-wrapped our zeitgeist and we are suffocating culturally. But, we can fight back by bookmarking a web page or sharing a piece of art unsanctioned by our For Your Page. To do that we must get out there and raw dog that open web. In our current digital landscape, where a corporate algorithm tells us what to read, watch, drink, eat, wear, smell like, and sound like, human curation of the web is an act of revolution. A simple list of hyperlinks published under a personal domain name is subversive. Curation is punk. So get out there and find the parts of the web that aren't for sale. Use any search engine that isn't Google dot com. Sift through the corporate blogs and AI-generated prose until you find that speck of gold.

This is a project to commemorate the domains we've parked and lost. Goodbye.domains is a place to leave a public note about our parked ideas we've let expire. The moment we decide not to renew a domain is a difficult and often deeply emotional experience. When that unexpected, cold reminder email from our registrar comes, the decision to stop renewing one of our websites is a critical moment. Perhaps the idea is no longer relevant to our lives, maybe our priorities shifted, our sense of humor changed, or the website turned out different than we expected. Or maybe we still love the site, but can no longer afford to keep renewing it. While we post our active links everywhere, there's currently no place to publicly list our expired domains and dwell on all those projects we once wanted to share with the world. T

Escolha Livre (Free Choice)
Escolha Livre (Free Choice)
This guide aims to point out a range of free and open software and services, and open resources that can help school actors, particularly teachers and students, and is available in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. We don’t aim to be a huge catalog of free software or to list all the open content repositories. Escolha Livre is the result of a collective curation to select and suggest software and content that is easy to install and use, that dialogues with teaching practices and that in many cases can replace closed and proprietary software and repositories currently in use. We also want to help teachers and students think about a more Open Education which, among other principles, has the ethical, pedagogical and technical imperative of supporting free software. The Pocket Guide to Open Education (in Portuguese) is a quick and easy read on the subject. Escolha Livre, in its 2024 version, is a realization of the UNESCO Chair in Distance Education in collaboration with the Open Education Initiative, with financial support from the project “Boas práticas em redes na implantação e implementação dos sistemas de informação para a infância e a adolescência” (PNUD/UnB/FUNAPE). h/t @tamiel https://mastodon.online/@tamiel/112995751137318667

Hewlett Foundation Open Education Strategy (April 2020)
Hewlett Foundation Open Education Strategy (April 2020)
Open educational resources (OER) offer a promising solution to the perennial challenge of delivering high levels of student learning at lower cost. But OER offer much more than just cost savings. Well- designed, customizable, openly licensed materials can engage students and energize educators in ways that enable more responsive teaching and better learning. Our foundation's goal has always been to make such materials broadly and equitably available in order to expand and equalize access to knowledge and high-quality educational opportunities. The Hewlett Foundation began supporting OER in 2002, and early efforts were geared toward an initial goal of seeing the use of OER develop and spread. We created legal and technical infrastructure, including tools to make OER easier to find. We worked to strengthen key institutions within the budding OER field, while backing advocacy efforts to unlock OER funding at the state and national levels. Further, we championed the development of guidelines and standards to improve the discovery, interoperability, and accessibility of OER. By its 10th anniversary, the OER field had grown significantly and gained international support. Since OER was still not widely used in classrooms, however, the foundation shifted its grantmaking to promote the use of OER to address specific challenges. At the K-12 level, we helped districts move towards using openly licensed instructional materials to align with the newly released Common Core State Standards. At the higher education level, we addressed the steeply rising costs of college textbooks which led students either to go without or to borrow class materials - by coupling support for the development of open textbooks for high-enrollment courses and even entire degree programs along with a variety of efforts to promote faculty adoption of openly licensed textbooks.

Generative AI is ripping the humanity out of things. Built on a foundation of theft, the technology is steering us toward a barren future. We think machine learning is a compelling technology with a lot of merit, but the path generative AI is on is wrong for us. We're here for the humans. We're not chasing a technology that is a moral threat to our greatest jewel: human creativity. In this technological rush, this might make us an exception or seem at risk of being left behind. But we see this road less travelled as the more exciting and fruitful one for our community.

AI Pioneers – A network for pioneers of AI in Education
AI Pioneers, is an Erasmus+ Forward Looking, cross-sectoral project aims at promoting the use and teaching of artificial intelligence (AI) in adult education and vocational training (VET). UNESCO recognizes the potential of AI to accelerate the achievement of global education goals by reducing barriers to learning access, automating management processes, and optimizing methods to improve learning outcomes. The European Digital Action Plan highlights that digital technology, when used effectively, can support high-quality and inclusive education for all learners. As AI continues to transform education, our project aims to build a network of AI Pioneers, including trainers, stakeholders, policy-makers, and educational planners, to act as reference points for the design and implementation of future educational projects related to AI. Our objectives include developing policy recommendations, toolkits, and implementation guidelines for AI Pioneers, identifying and piloting use cases of AI in education, and developing guidelines for ethical and trustworthy use of AI in education. To achieve these objectives, we will involve stakeholders throughout the AI system’s life cycle, fostering training and education so that all stakeholders understand the issues in developing ethical and trustworthy approaches to the use of AI in education. We will also develop a supplement to the DigCompEDU Framework that describes the skills and competences of teachers and trainers related to AI in education.
