Performance of ChatGPT on USMLE: Potential for AI-Assisted Medical Education Using Large Language Models | medRxiv
Performance of ChatGPT on USMLE: Potential for AI-Assisted Medical Education Using Large Language Models | medRxiv
We evaluated the performance of a large language model called ChatGPT on the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE), which consists of three exams: Step 1, Step 2CK, and Step 3. ChatGPT performed at or near the passing threshold for all three exams without any specialized training or reinforcement. Additionally, ChatGPT demonstrated a high level of concordance and insight in its explanations. These results suggest that large language models may have the potential to assist with medical education, and potentially, clinical decision-making.

Catch Me If You Can | History of Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner
“Beep, Beep!” While the Road Runner didn’t have much else to say to Wile E. Coyote, he frequently displayed his ability and intelligence when outwitting his foe in the Warner Bros. cartoon. Many Americans grew up watching the animated rivalry and constant duel between Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner – making it one of the most classic confrontations of all time. To revisit the far-out efforts between these two timeless characters, we studied the 40 main episodes created over the show’s history to see just how far Coyote was willing to go to capture the Road Runner, and just how short (or far) he fell. Want to know how many ACME products Coyote purchased over the years – and what they might have cost him? Continue reading to find out.

The Promptist Manifesto - deeplearn.art
The Promptist Manifesto - deeplearn.art
This artistic manifesto – to my knowledge the first one to be associated with what is called “AI Art” and also written by an “AI” – was published first in May 2021 on the Latent Space discord server. At that time I together with other artists were thinking about an umbrella term for a possible new art movement whose representatives employed machine learning models trained with contrastive language-image techniques for imagery generation. The obvious moniker “Clip art” wasn’t entirely satisfactory. As this artistic technology keeps on spreading and developing and is now catching the public attention everywhere, there is no better time to present the manifesto for the world at large. So for the benefit and entertainment for all Promptists, past, present and future, here is our Manifesto of 2021, written by GPT-3

How to Read an AI Image - by Eryk Salvaggio
How to Read an AI Image - by Eryk Salvaggio
Every AI generated image is an infographic about the dataset. AI images are data patterns inscribed into pictures, and they tell us stories about that dataset and the human decisions behind it. To begin answering these questions, I've created a loose methodology. It's based on my training in media analysis at the London School of Economics, drawing from Roland Barthes and Judith Williamson. Typically we use media analysis for film, photographs, or advertisements. AI images are not films or photographs. They're infographics for a dataset. But they lack a key, and information isn't distributed along an X and Y axis. How might we read unlabeled maps? Can a methodology meant to understand how human, unconscious assumptions and ideologies circulate through communication help us understand, interpret, and critique the inhuman outputs of generative imagery? Here's my first crack and describing the method I’ve been using. That's why AI images can become “readable” as objects. In media studies, we understand that image-makers unconsciously encode images with certain meanings, and that viewers decode them through certain frames. Images draw their power from intentional assemblages of choices, steered toward the purpose of communication.

Good riddance to the Open Gaming License | by Cory Doctorow
Good riddance to the Open Gaming License | by Cory Doctorow
Last week, Gizmodo’s Linda Codega caught a fantastic scoop — a leaked report of Hasbro’s plan to revoke the decades-old Open Gaming License, which subsidiary Wizards Of the Coast promulgated as an allegedly open sandbox for people seeking to extend, remix or improve Dungeons and Dragons: https://gizmodo.com/dnd-wizards-of-the-coast-ogl-1-1-open-gaming-license-1849950634 The report set off a shitstorm among D&D fans and the broader TTRPG community — not just because it was evidence of yet more enshittification of D&D by a faceless corporate monopolist, but because Hasbro was seemingly poised to take back the commons that RPG players and designers had built over decades, having taken WOTC and the OGL at their word. Gamers were right to be worried. Giant companies love to rugpull their fans, tempting them into a commons with lofty promises of a system that we will all have a stake in, using the fans for unpaid creative labor, then enclosing the fans’ work and selling it back to them.

Taccle AI – Improving skills and competences of VET teachers and trainers in the age of Artificial Intelligence
Taccle AI – Improving skills and competences of VET teachers and trainers in the age of Artificial Intelligence
The European project ‘Improving the Skills and Competences of VET teachers and trainers in the age of Artificial Intelligence’ brings together partners from five countries to provide initial training and continued professional development for VET teachers and trainers in Artificial Intelligence. The project will seek to support VET teachers and trainers in extending and adapting open curriculum models for incorporating AI in vocational education and training. Furthermore, the project will develop an Open Massive Open Online Course in AI in education in English and German, open to all teachers and trainers in VET in Europe. The course materials will be freely available for other organisations to use for professional development. It follows the tradition of previous successful TACCLE-projects. AI is particularly important for vocational education and training as it promises profound changes in employment and work tasks. Not only are some jobs vulnerable and new jobs likely to be created but there will be changing tasks and roles within jobs, requiring changes in initial and continuing training, for those in work as well as those seeking employment. This will require changes in existing VET content, new programmes such as the design of AI systems in different sectors, and adaptation to new ways of cooperative work with AI. If teachers are to prepare young people for this new world of work, and to excite young people to engage with careers in designing and building future AI ecosystems, then VET teachers and trainers themselves require training to understand the impact of AI and the new needs of their students. There is an urgent need for young people to be equipped with a knowledge about AI, meaning the need for educators to be similarly equipped is imperative. This requires cooperation between policy makers, organisations involved in teacher training, vocational schools and occupational sector organisations, including social partners.

Barry Lopez on Storytelling and His Advice on the Three Steps to Becoming a Writer – The Marginalian
One of the most poignant, precise takes on the power and secret of storytelling I have ever encountered comes from Barry Lopez (January 6, 1945–December 25, 2020), whose vast and varied body of work illuminates with uncommon radiance the interleaving of nature and human nature — the way our relationship with Earth and the universe shapes our relationship with ourselves and each other. “It is through story that we embrace the great breadth of memory, that we can distinguish what is true, and that we may glimpse, at least occasionally, how to live without despair in the midst of the horror that dogs and unhinges us.”

Arty Bots – B.J. Best
In 2020, I was fortunate to be able to talk with Google Design about the Arty Bots project.  Listen to the podcast if you’d like to learn more about the bots and the art they create. * Arty Bots are Twitter bots that make original images and Tweet them.  Many can also modify an image sent to them.  Some results are shown above. Below are some thoughts about the nature of art bots and the ArtyBot family, and I describe each bot in more detail at the end.  But, if you’d like to jump right to them on Twitter, they are: @ArtyAbstract, @ArtyBots, @ArtyCrush, @ArtyCurve, @ArtyEdit, @ArtyFractals, @ArtyImpression, @ArtyLetters, @ArtyMash, @ArtyNegative, @ArtyOriginals, @ArtyPetals, @ArtyPolar, @ArtyShapes, @ArtyTiles, @ArtyTriangle, and @ArtyWinds.

How to Add a Contact to the Home Screen on iPhone
How to Add a Contact to the Home Screen on iPhone
At the core, iPhones are communication devices. So it makes sense that you’d want to put the people you talk to the most front and center. We’ll show you how to create home screen shortcuts for your favorite contacts. Surprisingly, Apple doesn’t make it clear that it’s even possible to do this. The functionality is buried in the powerful Shortcuts app. It takes a bit of work to set up, but it’s not super complicated. Let’s get started.

DigiLit Fun: Digital Literacy, Learning the fun and frugal way
The goal of this 10-week professional development curriculum is to develop a teacher’s 21st-century digital literacy skills to enhance their effectiveness in the classroom. Within the playful medium of digital storytelling, students are invited to take on the role of a teacher teaching a course at the Nissaba School of Sorcery- a context recognizable from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry created by J.K. Rowling (1997). They are learning a new form of “digital magic” to develop needed digital literacy skills in preparation for a lesson exchange program with a non-magical school.

Go To Hellman: Creative Works *Ascend* into the Public Domain
Go To Hellman: Creative Works *Ascend* into the Public Domain
I'd heard that phrase used before, and maybe used it myself. But why "fall"? Is the public domain somehow lower than the purgatory of being forgotten but locked into the service of a copyright owner? I don't think so. I think that when a work enters the public domain, it's fitting to say that it "ascends" into the public domain. If you're still fighting this image in your head, consider this example: what happens when a copyright owner releases a poem from the chains of intellectual property? Does the poem drop to the floor, like a jug of milk? Or does it float into the sky, seen by everyone far and wide, and so hard to recapture?

The End of Programming | January 2023 | Communications of the ACM
I believe the conventional idea of "writing a program" is headed for extinction, and indeed, for all but very specialized applications, most software, as we know it, will be replaced by AI systems that are trained rather than programmed. In situations where one needs a "simple" program (after all, not everything should require a model of hundreds of billions of parameters running on a cluster of GPUs), those programs will, themselves, be generated by an AI rather than coded by hand.
