I’m Taking Ownership of My Tweets—zachleat.com
I’m Taking Ownership of My Tweets—zachleat.com
I’ve invested a lot into Twitter and I’ve received a lot of value from Twitter. I’ve made a lot of friends and professional connections on the site. I’ll be sad when Twitter goes away. Without a doubt, it will go away. It’s only a question of when. I fully expect my personal website to outlive Twitter and as such have decided to take full ownership of the content I’ve posted there. In true IndieWeb fashion, I’m taking ownership of my data. This project has now been open sourced as Tweetback https://www.zachleat.com/web/tweetback/

Susan Kieffer (PhD '71), Geologist | Heritage Project
Understanding the nature of volcanoes and geysers, both here on planet Earth and elsewhere in our solar system, requires mastery of the underlying physics—specifically fluid dynamics and thermodynamics. In Sue Kieffer's long and varied research career, she has mixed theory, observation, and field work to contribute fundamentally to our understanding of any kind of geological condition that is hot, and/or, flows. Kieffer completed her PhD on shock waves and meteorite impacts at Caltech in 1971, and she has held faculty appointments at UCLA, the University of Arizona, the University of British Columbia, the University of Illinois, and a research appointment at the United States Geological Survey. Her numerous honors include election to the National Academy of Sciences, a MacArthur Fellowship, the Penrose Medal from the Geological Society of America, and Caltech's Distinguished Alumni Award. Keen on science communication and conveying her findings to a broader audience, Kieffer is the author of The Dynamics of Disaster, which surveys natural disasters from the perspective of fundamental science.

Historical analogies for large language models
Historical analogies for large language models
How will large language models (LLMs) change the world? No one knows. With such uncertainty, a good exercise is to look for historical analogies—to think about other technologies and ask what would happen if LLMs played out the same way. I like to keep things concrete, so I’ll discuss the impact of LLMs on writing. But most of this would also apply to the impact of LLMs on other fields, as well as other AI technologies like AI art/music/video/code.

GitHub Copilot: Perfect for cheating in CompSci exercises? • The Register
Microsoft's AI code-suggestion tool GitHub Copilot is showing itself to be so capable that educators may have to rethink how they teach computer science. University of Massachusetts Amherst computer science professor Emery Berger earlier this month published a blog post warning educators that "students armed with [Copilot] will be bringing Uzis to a knife fight." His concern is that Copilot will render traditional programming exercises – part of computer science training but by no means all of it – pointless because Copilot knows all the answers.

With AI making decisions that impact not only businesses but also individuals, it’s crucial that we approach this technology with caution and consideration 🤔. In this post, we explore 100 different use-cases for ChatGPT. From improving customer service, 📞 automating mundane tasks 📝 or going full Nazi and killing the CEO of OpenAI, ChatGPT has the power to revolutionize the way we work and live. Or fucking disrupt everything. We must also remember that as AI becomes more advanced, this could slowly lead to a world where we will have AI-owned companies that are run entirely by AI 🤖.

International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP)
International Music Score Library Project (IMSLP)
The ultimate goal of the IMSLP is to gather all public domain music scores, in addition to the music scores of all contemporary composers (or their estates) who wish to release them to the public free of charge. However, another main goal of IMSLP is to facilitate the exchange of musical ideas outside of compositions: for example, the analysis of a particular piece of music. Therefore, feel free to create/edit a page with your analysis of a particular piece (please use the "Discussion" link on the work page of that particular piece). For general discussions, and IMSLP-related questions, score requests, etc. you can use the forums. We hope to build a growing community of dedicated musicians and music lovers, who can use this site as a platform for enjoying music.

Free Learning
Free Learning
Free running* invites participants to use creativity, skill and strength to find new ways to navigate a landscape. It is fun, engaging and highly motivating for those who participate. It takes a space (urban or otherwise) and turns it on its head, drawing new function from an existing, very fixed, form. In much the same way, Free Learning aims to provide students with an intellectual landscape through which they can playfully discover their own path. It promotes creativity, individuality, team work, freedom and taking responsibility.

On Bullshit, And AI-Generated Prose | by Clive Thompson
On Bullshit, And AI-Generated Prose | by Clive Thompson
There’s a word for prose and speech that exist mostly just to fill the space. Why is the AI getting basic facts wrong? It’s probably because AI models like this do not appear to actually understand things. Having been trained on oodles of text, they’re great at grokking the patterns in how we humans wield language. That means they autocomplete text nicely, predicting the next likely phrases. They can grasp a lot of context. But human intelligence is not merely pattern recognition and prediction. We also understand basic facts about the world in an abstract fashion, and we use that understanding to reason about the world. AI like GPT-3 cannot reason very well because it doesn’t seem to truly know any facts. It is, as the scientist Gary Marcus notes, merely the “king of pastiche”, blending together snippets of language that merely sound plausible.

The 99 Cameras Club
The 99 Cameras Club
Sharing the legacy of an unreasonable camera collector. My father was a collector.  And like any real collector he was not a reasonable man. He was a man of many passions that he turned into vast collections of “things”. Being an engineer, most of his interest revolved around intricate technical devices that include chrome, small gears and moving parts (such as watches, mechanical calculators or typewriters). Among all his collections, he dedicated most of his attention to his collection of vintage cameras.  He passed away in 2020 at 80 years old leaving a collection of over 2000 cameras based mostly in Switzerland. The 99 Cameras Club is my tribute to his dedication and a way to share his passion with the world.

Fair Use Checklist | Columbia University Libraries
Fair Use Checklist | Columbia University Libraries
The Fair Use Checklist and variations on it have been widely used for many years to help educators, librarians, lawyers, and many other users of copyrighted works determine whether their activities are within the limits of fair use under U.S. copyright law (Section 107 of the U.S. Copyright Act). The four factors form the structure of this checklist.  Congress and courts have offered some insight into the specific meaning of the factors, and those interpretations are reflected in the details of this form.

Errol Morris’s Secret Weapon for Unsettling Interviews: The Interrotro
Errol Morris’s Secret Weapon for Unsettling Interviews: The Interrotro
The ingenious design behind Errol Morris’s indelible trademark of showing people making eye contact with the camera. By shooting through a simple two-way mirror with a video monitor mounted under the camera lens, Morris can film his subject and make eye contact with him/her from the exact same angle. But that’s only half of it. The real genius of the Interrotron is that it’s a two-way street: the same mechanism gives the interviewee continuous eye contact with Morris, as well.

Converting Your Twitter Archive to Markdown
Converting Your Twitter Archive to Markdown
there is help in the form of a Python script called Twitter Archive Parser, a project started by Tim Hutton. This script does the following: It converts the tweets in your archive to markdown with embedded images, videos and links. It replaces t.co URLs with their original versions. It copies used images to an output folder, to allow them to be moved to a new home. Afterwards, it asks if you want to try downloading the original size images using downloadbetterimages.py.

hCaptcha brings a modern, privacy-focused approach to stopping bots. We show CAPTCHA challenges that are difficult for bots but easy for people by collecting difficult-to-label data from machine learning problems, and using it to distinguish whether a website or app visitor is human.
