No Copyright Intended - Waxy.org
"These "no copyright infringement intended" messages are everywhere on YouTube, and about as effective as a drug dealer asking if you're a cop. It's like a little voodoo charm that people post on their videos to ward off evil spirits. How pervasive is it? There are about 489,000 YouTube videos that say "no copyright intended" or some variation, and about 664,000 videos have a "copyright disclaimer" citing the fair use provision in Section 107 of the Copyright Act."

RIP Jean-Claude Bradley, Open Innovator | explorations in the ed tech world
"I learned haphazardly via Twitter the other day that Jean-Claude Bradley had passed away quite recently, am still reeling a bit from this news, despite never having met him in person.  When Open Education Resources were becoming a thing, JC Bradley was one of the first people I had heard about actually innovating his teaching around an idea of open."

" Gardner Campbell, invited me to speak at the University of Mary Washington’s Faculty Academy on Instructional Technologies. There I met an inspired team of thinkers and doers who were pioneering the academic use of what we now call cloud technology. UMW isn’t a wealthy school; there wasn’t a big budget for IT; that was a constraint well embraced. Gardner’s dream team found their way to BlueHost where, for $8/month, they could spin up web servers, wikis, and most importantly the blogs that have become central to the intellectual life of the school. "At Maptia, we believe that if people from every country, every culture, and every background shared the stories of their lives and of their travels, then the world would be a more understanding and empathetic place. We also believe that this would encourage people to get out there and make the most of their short time on this planet. Our mission is to gather these stories together and create the most inspirational map in the world."

Science Forward
"Science Forward is a new type of undergraduate science seminar, helping students to see science as a lens on the world, a way of approaching questions and challenges. The course focuses on the critical thinking skills in use across the scientific disciplines, which we have summarized as the “science senses.” Starting with critical issues in the contemporary world, from climate change to the social and economic implications of artificial intelligence, the course encourages active learning and inquiry-based instruction."

Why Spreadsheets? | Public Affairs Data Journalism at Stanford University
"If you want to be one of those independent collectors of data – because you're paying attention to something that the government or society just isn't – then get used to using spreadsheets. Your ability to be smart at organizing information is going to be just as important as passion (if not much more important) when it comes to accomplishing your goal. Slate's attempt to track gun-related homicides is one such spreadsheet-based do-it-yourself data project. For this quick walkthrough, we're going to track the places we like to eat."

When our current students graduate, they will go to work in a world that is different than the one we live in today. So those of us who work in educational technology partner with professors to prepare students for–we don’t know what. This web site is about one of the ways we do that.

photofoundation
photofoundation is a community for people with a passion for photography who want to use their images to support good causes. Photography is everywhere. 500 billion photographs will be taken this year – a testament to our collective desire to take pictures and to understand the world through a lens. We think there’s a great opportunity to make the most of this and create a new way to support good causes. We seek contributions of inspiring images through our website or mobile app. We then curate these contributions to create a valuable library of original images. Charities can access these images for free, and commercial organisations can also buy them, supporting good causes at the same time. Your images are yours forever, but you can share the rights to your images with us. This is what makes photofoundation work. Upload your images to the platform and we can put them to work on your behalf.

Flickrit - create an embeddable Flickr slideshow in seconds
Flickrit - create an embeddable Flickr slideshow in seconds
Flickrit makes the process simple – we're talking a minute or two. First, you determine the size of your slideshow, using either traditional pixel dimensions or a width-to-height ratio that allows your photos to expand or shrink depending on screen size. Next, pick the Flickr photos you want to include by specifying a user ID, set / album ID, keyword, tag or group ID. Once you click on the big green "Generate embed code" button, you'll be presented with code to copy and paste over to your site, along with a preview of how the slideshow will look. If you want, you can also tinker with some additional options, including thumbnails, playback speed, sorting criteria and transition effects.

The Birth of the Internet Troll
The Birth of the Internet Troll
"Trolls are shitting all over our internet. You can hardly search for something as innocuous as "dog" on Google without coming across inflammatory attacks on every possible dog-related opinion under the sun. All horrible things have to crawl before they can walk/crush spirits, though. Even trolls. And while the term "troll" has become wildly muddied, it did have to come from somewhere. We decided to try and find out just where that dark, acerbic origin story began."

JuxtaposeJS
"JuxtaposeJS helps storytellers compare two pieces of similar media, including photos, and gifs. It’s ideal for highlighting then/now stories that explain slow changes over time (grown of a city skyline, regrowth of a forest, etc.) or before/after stories that show the impact of single dramatic events (natural disasters, protests, wars, etc.). It is free, easy to use, and works on all devices. All you need to get started are links to the images you'd like to compare."

archive.today - webpage capture
"archive.today is your personal Wayback Machine! It takes a "snapshot" of a webpage that will always be online even if the original page disappears. This can be useful if you want to take a "snapshot" a page which could change soon: price list, job offer, real estate listing, drunk blog post, ... It saves a text and a graphical copy of the page for better accuracy. It also shortens URLs much like tinyurl, goo.gl and bit.ly do."

"Lens flares seem to catch a bad rap. While some are simply a stylistic element (and some are even mistakes), there are plenty of thoughtful and symbolic uses of light scattering through the lens. Here is a compilation showcasing the many different types and uses of lens flares in a variety of films. "

Yes, You Really Can Use WordPress To Build Apps
"Not only has WordPress itself evolved into a more suitable tool for app development, but there’s also a slew of new plugins and services available that make it even easier to build web and mobile apps. Thanks to these developments, WordPress is a relatively easy and affordable option for app development. In this article, I will explain the key questions and concerns you need to address before starting any WordPress app project. I will also introduce you to some options to address these issues. "

Open Education - Schools Extranet
Open Education - Schools Extranet
"Open Educational Resources (OER) are learning materials (including presentations, revision guides, lesson plans) that have been released under an open licence, so that anyone can use, share and build on them for free.  Many openly licensed resources are available for schools to use and develop – but many schools are not familiar with open licensing and OER.   At a time when schools increasingly work with and rely on digital and web based materials, understanding how copyright works, and making the most of all available resources, is essential for staff and schools. Creating Open Educational Resources allows schools connect and collaborate with others through sharing work. Sharing can also help promote the great work school staff and schools are doing."

Adding Distraction Free Reading to WordPress - WPExplorer
"Remember when WordPress introduced distraction free writing, way back in 3.2? It’s an amazing feature, one that allows you to forget about everything else and focus on writing. But how about the readers? If you’re a purist and like consuming your content with no side dishes of ads, latest posts lists, newsletter forms, social media widgets and what nots, you’re probably a fan of either Evernote’s Clearly, Pocket, Reeder or any other similar app. Not saying all side dishes are bad, just that sometimes ignoring them and focusing on nothing but content feels good and makes for a delicious “infomeal”."
