[murmur]
[murmur]
[murmur] is a documentary oral history project that records stories and memories told about specific geographic locations. We collect and make accessible people's personal histories and anecdotes about the places in their neighborhoods that are important to them. In each of these locations we install a [murmur] sign with a telephone number on it that anyone can call with a mobile phone to listen to that story while standing in that exact spot, and engaging in the physical experience of being right where the story takes place. Some stories suggest that the listener walk around, following a certain path through a place, while others allow a person to wander with both their feet and their gaze.

On Judging the World Press Photo Multimedia Awards 2014: Part Two: 20 Tips When Making A Documentary Film | The United Nations of Photography
"The process of viewing so many pieces of documentary film work created by so many people from so many countries for so many different reasons inevitably but somewhat bizarrely produces repetitive themes of construction, approach and delivery. I hate using the word ‘zeitgeist’ but it seems appropriate as somehow or other global aesthetic trends to visual storytelling do seem to come in chronological waves; this was certainly the case with this year’s World Press Photo Multimedia Awards." You may agree with what I have to say, recognize your self and work in some of what I have to say or feel that my observations are either too harsh or not harsh enough. Whatever your feelings are I hope that the following twenty observations are enjoyable, useful and points from which to continue the debate that leads to the creation of great work.

Through the Glass: Now & Then: Seeing the Future from the Past
Through the Glass: Now & Then: Seeing the Future from the Past
"I've always been fascinated by the Then & Now photos you see on the internet, where a person is holding an old photo up to the same scene today. After writing a series of then and now pictorials for the blog, I was thinking about a way to do combine then and now photos that's a little different than what I've already seen.  What resulted was a project where I hold photos of the present against scenes of the past.  It's interesting to look at a scene as if you were seeing the future from that moment.  My hand is meant to be in the scene from the past, therefore I tinted or colored it for each photo to match the scene.  Before creating the scenes, I photographed my hand against a white background (to make it easier to mask), and gathered public domain photos from WikiMedia Commons that were similar to photos I already had."

"They’re one of rock’s greatest bands. They’re also one of rock’s worst… when it comes to properly crediting their sources of inspiration. Led Zeppelin’s many incidents of copyright infringement are legendary. There are those who have called it outright theft, and have sworn in a court of law that Led Zeppelin (primarily Jimmy Page and Robert Plant) have repeatedly taken credit for writing music that wasn’t their’s to take credit for. And, many of those cases have been vindicated."

NEWFOTOSCAPES | Photographic Encounters
Photography has never been a more dominant and embedded part of contemporary culture than it is now. The Internet, digital technology and social media have amplified our ability to connect and build communities, and sharing and communication of images has facilitated an exponential growth in picture capture and digital distribution. NEWFOTOSCAPES seeks to navigate the evolving topography surrounding the image in the twenty-first century; offering a focused eye on the contemporary creative author-curator and image-maker and on the possibilities afforded by an increasingly complex professional landscape. Jonathan Shaw advocates a new way of thinking about photographic production and education in a post-digital era. NEWFOTOSCAPES is a collection of curated texts arising from a series of in-depth conversations with key stakeholders in, and influential commentators on, photography; including Andy Adams (Flakphoto), David Campbell, Charlotte Cotton, Dónall Curtin, Nathaniel Pitt, Mishka Henner, Francis Hodgson, Dewi Lewis, Stephen Mayes and Katrina Sluis. Perspectives and views cover a wide range of topics such as; agencies, appropriation, archives, community, curation, governance, licensing, mobile, networked-image, open education, photobooks, power and value.

Why I Follow Somerset Maugham’s Three Storytelling Rules – Community Expressions, LLC
Why I Follow Somerset Maugham’s Three Storytelling Rules – Community Expressions, LLC
"It’s no secret that I’m leery (and weary) of posts entitled The Six Secrets to Storytelling Success, The Seven Rules, The Three Best Practices, The Twenty Must-Dos… or that I’m dismayed by folks trade-marking storytelling processes and terms that are, actually, just plain old common sense and age-old practices. When people ask me for rules, for best ways, for the one true answer, I quote Somerset Maugham: “There are three rules for writing the novel.  Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”"

Visual Storytelling
Visual Storytelling
In this day and age, a picture is worth more than just a thousand words. When it’s genuine, when it’s relevant yet eternal, when it’s so powerful that it goes beyond sight and delves into your senses — that’s the kind of image that’s worth a million. And it only takes an instant to read. How can your visuals tell an epic story?

Using WordPress as a CMS
Using WordPress as a CMS
"Today, I was honored to present at the WPSummit again. I talked about how WordPress can be used as a content management system (CMS). If you’d like to view the presentation with my presenter notes, you can press the “s” key on your keyboard when the presentation loads up, and it will open a new window with the notes. If you’d like to print the presentation as a PDF, you can do that, as well. Unfortunately, it does not print with the notes (I’m working on trying to find a solution for that). One of the key elements I forgot to mention during my last slide about plugins was the ability to integrate Google Custom Search Engine (CSE) into WordPress. That will improve your search capabilities within WordPress quite a bit, making search perform much faster and more accurately, as well as making it easier to use search across a multisite installation. You may have to roll your own integration to use your CSE in WordPress, but it’s fairly simple to do so if you use the mu-plugins directory to store your PHP code, and you hook into the get_search_form filter. Also, I forgot to mention a handful of additional plugins that can be really helpful in using WordPress as a CMS. Following are the plugins that I like to highlight for CMS usage:"

Why Most People's Charts & Graphs Look Like Crap
Why Most People's Charts & Graphs Look Like Crap
"Data visualization is a powerful tool to communicate complex information in an engaging way. By visualizing information, our brains can synthesize and retain content more effectively, increasing its impact. But if data isn’t properly visualized, it can do more damage than good. The wrong presentation can diminish the data’s message or, worse, misrepresent it entirely. That’s why good data visualization relies on good design. And it’s about more than just choosing the right chart type. It’s about presenting information in a way that is easy to understand and intuitive to navigate, making the viewer do as little legwork as possible. Of course, not all designers are data visualization experts, which is why much of the visual content we see is, well, less than stellar. Here are 10 data visualization mistakes you’re probably making and the quick fixes to remedy them."

Celebration Of Vintage and Retro Design | Smashing Magazine
Celebration Of Vintage and Retro Design | Smashing Magazine
"Retro and vintage designs are often considered as being outdated, looking old, unattractive and dull. That’s not true. Although compared to modern design, retro is mostly a completely different realm, it has a large variety of benefits modern graphic designers often tend to overlook. And that’s a pity. Because we, as designers, can learn a lot from it. Nostalgic designs arise feelings, awake memories and better manage to involve broad range of readers even although they don’t really realize it. Furthermore, retro can look cool and offer readers or visitors something they haven’t expected at all. So why not try to impress them with some impressive vintage art for a change?"

The Secret History of Hypertext - Alex Wright - The Atlantic
The Secret History of Hypertext - Alex Wright - The Atlantic
"When Vannevar Bush's "As We May Think" first appeared in The Atlantic's pages in July 1945, it set off an intellectual chain reaction that resulted, more than four decades later, in the creation of the World Wide Web. In that landmark essay, Bush described a hypothetical machine called the Memex: a hypertext-like device capable of allowing its users to comb through a large set of documents stored on microfilm, connected via a network of "links" and "associative trails" that anticipated the hyperlinked structure of today's Web. Historians of technology often cite Bush's essay as the conceptual forerunner of the Web. And hypertext pioneers like Douglas Engelbart, Ted Nelson, and Tim Berners-Lee have all acknowledged their debt to Bush's vision. But for all his lasting influence, Bush was not the first person to imagine something like the Web."
