So, you are using the awesome Jetpack for WordPress plugin, the Carousel module that comes with it, but (just like me) you don't want the comments section below the images when the carousel is active. Here's what you need to do.
Curious Wanderings of Batman in the American Southwest - My Modern Metropolis
In this delightful series of black and white photographs by French artist Rémi Noël, Batman is imagined in a number of tongue-in-cheek scenarios. These photos are almost like a glimpse into the life of a retired Batman living out the rest of his days in the desert landscapes of the Southwest. Whether he is sunbathing by the pool, waiting for his cape to finish washing at the laundromat or learning a new recipe, Batman still appears stoic and majestic in his surprising surroundings.

Absolute Horizontal And Vertical Centering In CSS | Smashing Coding
We’ve all seen margin: 0 auto; for horizontal centering, but margin: auto; has refused to work for vertical centering… until now! But actually (spoiler alert!) absolute centering only requires a declared height* and these styles
How to use WordPress 3.5 Media Uploader in Theme Options | Codestag
WordPress 3.5 is just released with a number of major changes. The one I love most is HiDPI display support, WordPress looks so beautiful on my MacBook Pro Retina display. Besides, after the update was released I considered upgrading my StagFramework to the WordPress 3.5 standard, going ahead I implemented media uploader and color picker along with a couple of new functions in WP 3.5. So as you all know that WordPress has got a new media uploader so why not to use it our theme options, WordPress theme developer would be happy working with this because it has got less hassle than previous media uploader; you don’t need to do any enqueue any script like we did before wp_enqueue_script('media-upload');. So let’s go ahead and see how can we achieve this.
Using the WordPress 3.5 Media Uploader within plugins - Mike Jolley
This week whilst working on WooCommerce 2.0 beta I was faced with the task of rewriting the media unloaders to use the fancy new interface in 3.5 instead of the tired old thickbox modal windows used in earlier versions. This was no easy task mainly due to the lack of documentation available for the new system, but I persevered and wanted to share my experiences in this post.
Transom welcomes Ira Glass, the Pied Piper of public radio (the getting people to travel with him part, not the drowning rats and disappearing children part). Ira is a radio hero because of the way he listens, and the way his listening summons stories you remember. He is a champion for the Many Voices that public radio’s mission says it values. This American Life is not the voice of record, but a record of the voices around us. The stories are as fully strange and hopeful and funny and harsh and romantic as America itself…and occasionally all at the same time. They sprawl outside the usual standard-issue broadcast confines, telling about the way it actually was, what it felt like, what really happened. Ira is their shepherd, their piper. But it was not always that way. Ira’s Transom Manifesto, which will appear in serialized form over the course of his time with us, begins with his utter lack of talent at this work. We think Ira’s failures will give you hope.
Create online manuals for your business | ScreenSteps
If you find yourself using 2–3 different software tools just to create a knowledge base article, you know how frustrating the experience can be - authoring a single help article can require a separate screen capture application, image editor, text authoring tool and FTP client. ScreenSteps combines everything you need into a single application. No more fussing with multiple applications - just open ScreenSteps and start writing.
Basics of Creating a Scroll Kit Narrative | Miriam Posner's Blog
My Digital Labor, Urban Space, and Materiality class will be using the drag-and-drop framework Scroll Kit to create multimedia “device narratives.” Here’s the tutorial I’ve created to teach them to use Scroll Kit. You’re welcome to download these instructions as a PDF or as a Word document, in case you’d like to modify them. This is my first Scroll Kit tutorial; the second covers the parallax effect. With Scroll Kit, you can create multimedia works in a scrolling format suitable for long-form narratives. It’s easy to drag and drop elements to create interesting effects. Your project will have a unique Scroll Kit URL, so you can share your project widely (or you can export the code).
Open Access and the Paywall | KateGreenPhotography
An unlikely relationship. Seemingly more like arch-enemies in the digital economic landscape as Open Access activists freely oppose the paywall which restricts the everyman to information that apparently “wants to be free”.
TGM Plugin Activation - the Best Way to Include Plugins with WordPress Themes (and Other Plugins)
TGM Plugin Activation is a PHP library that allows you to easily require or recommend plugins for your WordPress themes (and plugins). It allows your users to install and even automatically activate plugins in singular or bulk fashion using native WordPress classes, functions and interfaces. You can reference pre-packaged plugins, plugins from the WordPress Plugin Repository or even plugins hosted elsewhere on the internet.
If we’re going to talk a bit about membership plugins for WordPress, we need to start with the most obvious – there are a lot of options out there. Want me to cut to the chase? Let me “bottom-line” it for you. The good news is that unlike a few years ago, many of them have improved to the point where they all offer a lot of the same features. That’s great news because it hasn’t always been the case. That said, which one is the best? Which one wins?
Since WordPress 3.0 was released we’ve had quite a few inquiries about the possibility of having the same menu across a network. This morning I had a bit of time to pull together a small plugin that accomplishes that. Basically what it does is cache a menu on the main site and display it on the subsites.
New Feature: What's Going On in This Picture? - NYTimes.com
For our new “What’s Going On in This Picture” feature, we’ll collaborate weekly with Visual Thinking Strategies (V.T.S.). In this video, Philip Yenawine, one of the founders of the organization, conducts a live V.T.S. discussion about a work of art. How do you make sense of what you see when you look at an image, especially if that image comes with no caption, headline, links or other clues about its origins? What can constructing meaning from an image teach you? That’s what we hope students will figure out together through our new feature, one that focuses on Times photojournalism, visual literacy and critical thinking by asking viewers to think about one interesting photograph a week. We’ll be working with a program used in schools across the country called Visual Thinking Strategies, choosing the images and experimenting with running a virtual discussion about them on the blog together. Typically, V.T.S. centers on live classroom discussion of works of visual art, so attempting
Tips for using stories in E-Learning | Aurion Learning
In keeping with the storytelling theme from our previous blog post; using storytelling for learning, we discussed how stories can be used for learning and what makes a good story. Often overlooked, stories are a great resource for learning. They are authentic, easy to remember and are a great way to describe an experience. Storytelling itself is the oldest form of communication and for the majority it is the medium through which we can communicate meaningfully with one another. At Aurion HQ, we are avid fans of storytelling and in particular using stories for learning (not that you could tell!) We will soon be launching a new online tool called Storee that will change the way we tell and share stories. It’s been proven that our brain organises information in story form, allowing us to connect and make sense of things. One of the first things we do upon meeting others is to share a story; indeed as humans, much of our communication is made up of stories.
The Neuroscience of Your Brain on Fiction - NYTimes.com
AMID the squawks and pings of our digital devices, the old-fashioned virtues of reading novels can seem faded, even futile. But new support for the value of fiction is arriving from an unexpected quarter: neuroscience. Brain scans are revealing what happens in our heads when we read a detailed description, an evocative metaphor or an emotional exchange between characters. Stories, this research is showing, stimulate the brain and even change how we act in life.
Weathertronic.com was launched in 2009 with one goal in mind. I wanted to produce a forecast that was less cluttered and generally more usable than what I saw available online. One of the major issues with forecasting is there is so much data available that it's easy to get carried away trying to present it all, or alternatively to boil it down to the current temperature and a forecast icon which is slightly less useful than a nearby window. I think there's a middle ground. You won't find a top ten list of foliage drives or parka clad journalists reporting from shore in the middle of a hurricane here, I honestly don't think that's why you're checking the weather in the first place. Weathertronic is dedicated to giving you just the weather you need.
The 20 Most Powerful Storytelling Videos of 2013 | Visual.ly Blog
Animated videos are quickly becoming a leading medium of choice for impactful story telling. That’s hardly surprising, considering how difficult it is to grab – and hold! – the attention of an audience these days. Consider this: in a study published back in 2008, nearly half of new web page visits lasted only 12 seconds, and another 17%: less than four seconds. What are the chances that we spend even less time than that now, five years later and with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and countless new blogs and websites throwing fresh content at us 24/7? Video is one way to rise above all this noise and deliver your message in a way that leaves a lasting impression. We saw many fantastic animated videos released in 2013. Below are 20 of the best that showed on Visual.ly this year.
