How We Made The Mechanical MOOC - Freerange Learning With a Mechanical Guide
How We Made The Mechanical MOOC - Freerange Learning With a Mechanical Guide
At P2PU, we’d been talking to our collaborators at MIT OpenCourseWare and had been struggling with the problem of how to move learners in a cohort through the exciting new world of the MOOC. “I’d read a blog about using RSS feeds, as a kind of time-release capsule for OER material, which would send learners a reminder, and thought it was a really interesting idea, but I knew that RSS was a bit too esoteric for many students, and it didn’t solve the cohort problem,” says Steve Carson, Head of External Relations at MIT OpenCourseWare. The solution, we soon realised, would look a little bit like a mailing list sign-up, without a platform per se, which would allow organisers to loop in the various component parts and run what is essentially a headless MOOC; no instructor was placed at the centre, and after a certain number of signups was reached, the MOOC itself would trigger messages to everyone in the group.

How I Almost Blew My Big Chance by Forgetting Everything I Know About Innovation - The Discipline of Innovation
Back in May, Nilofer Merchant connected me up with her editor Sarah at Harvard Business Review Blogs, suggesting to her that I’d be a good addition to the stable there.  After a couple of discussions, Sarah and I agreed that it would be good to work together.  We discussed a couple of ideas for posts, and then it was over to me to start writing. And then, I. Completely. Froze. Up. So that wasn’t so good. I’d run straight into The Resistance.  Or the lizard brain. Make something, see what works, then iterate until it gets good. That’s what I teach all the time, and that’s what I had to do here. So, finally, I did. I wrote one crappy post and sent it off. And then, once I had done that, I had two really good ideas in short succession, and wrote those up over the weekend and sent those off too.

How to Easily Create Glitch Art | Front Row Society
How to Easily Create Glitch Art | Front Row Society
Are you a sucker for high saturation, wild color combinations, neon, heavily rendered inorganic imagery? Then our Digital Glitch design challenge is for you! But that’s not all – for the first time ever, this competition is open to placement prints- which means your design doesn’t have to be a repetitive pattern! Ok, now that you are up to speed with the basics, get ready to find an image you love and destroy it! In this month’s tutorial, we’re going to convert common images into abstract, colorful patterns without using any design software. We’re simply going to corrupt the files by altering their code and giving them a twist. Now don’t be scared – you don’t need to be a tech expert! All you need is a computer, an image to glitch and a plain-text program such as TextEdit (Mac) or WordPad (Windows). So why don’t you all have a go at it?

The Historian's Macroscope: Big Digital History
Welcome to Big Digital History: Exploring Big Data through a Historian’s Macroscope, a co-written manuscript by Shawn Graham, Ian Milligan, and Scott Weingart. Over the next few months, and into April 2014, we’re going to be writing this book in public. The book will be published by Imperial College Press, a forward-thinking publisher of scientific texts and monographs, which has allowed us to write using the CommentPress platform. If you click on the ‘blog’ button above (the pushpin icon), you’ll find us posting about the process of writing itself.

Dog Songs: Mary Oliver on What Dogs Teach Us About the Meaning of Our Human Lives | Brain Pickings
Mary Oliver is not only one of the sagest and most beloved poets of our time, a recipient of a Pulitzer Prize and a National Book Award, but is also among literary history’s greatest pet-lovers. Dog Songs (public library) collects her most soul-stirring poems and short prose celebrating that special human-canine relationship and what it reveals about the meaning of our own lives — a beautiful manifestation of Oliver’s singular sieve for extracting from the particularities of the poetic subject the philosophical universalities of the human condition to illuminate what it means to live a good life, a full life, a life of purpose and presence.

After the recent omnibus of definitions of science by some of history’s greatest minds and definitions of philosophy by some of today’s most prominent philosophers, why not turn to an arguably even more nebulous domain of humanity? Gathered here are some of my favorite definitions of art, from antiquity to today.

The Different Ways Men And Women Talk On Facebook | Popular Science
Ugh, how stereotypical can we be? In a study of the different words used by various demographics of Facebook users in their status updates, women talked most about shopping and their hair, while men posted about sports, video games and war.  This is according to a new study from researchers at the University of Pennsylvania's Positive Psychology Center, who analyzed 700 million words, phrases and topics pulled from the Facebook status updates of 75,000 volunteers. They looked for which words distinguished men from women, old from young, extraverts from introverts.

Local Audio Recorder: Demo
This is a basic demonstration of using a JavaScript callback to perform client-side processing on recorded audio. Once you record an audio clip and "upload" it, an HTML5 audio tag will be added below the recorder to allow you to play it back. If your browser supports the download attribute on links, the link below the player will trigger a download - otherwise, it'll simply link to the audio file.

Looking at Our Hometowns - NYTimes.com
What would happen if you asked high school students to help create a 21st-century portrait of the country by turning their cameras on their neighborhoods, families, friends and schools? You would have “My Hometown” — a vibrant document of 4,289 images submitted by teenagers in school- or community-based photography programs across the United States, including rural villages and urban neighborhoods, wealthy suburbs and blue-collar Rust Belt towns. While participants only photographed their own communities, together, the images create an important and lasting document of America today as seen by teenagers. They are published today in an interactive feature that opens with a selection of 145 photographs and is also searchable by state and by photographer. Many of the images will be archived at the Library of Congress in the Prints and Photographs Division. The project was inspired by our belief in the power of photography as an educational tool, and by a desire to help young people co

UTF-8: The Secret of Character Encoding - HTML Purifier
UTF-8: The Secret of Character Encoding - HTML Purifier
Character encoding and character sets are not that difficult to understand, but so many people blithely stumble through the worlds of programming without knowing what to actually do about it, or say "Ah, it's a job for those internationalization experts." No, it is not! This document will walk you through determining the encoding of your system and how you should handle this information. It will stay away from excessive discussion on the internals of character encoding. This document is not designed to be read in its entirety: it will slowly introduce concepts that build on each other: you need not get to the bottom to have learned something new. However, I strongly recommend you read all the way to Why UTF-8?, because at least at that point you'd have made a conscious decision not to migrate, which can be a rewarding (but difficult) task.

In this tutorial, I’ll show you, line by line, how to build a photo wall by pulling your pictures from Flickr using the Flickr API, jQuery, Ajax and JSON. The script I wrote places the following information over the image to which it relates: title, author, comment count, tag listing, location with a link to a map of those coordinates and the description.

Archiving Digital Audio
Archiving Digital Audio
I’m not much for editing audio. Those that know me and my workflow will see that for the last few years I have mainly used the classic Audioboo app. Recording straight into my phone with a standard mic windshield over one end. I subscribe to my own Audioboo podcast feed in iTunes to grab the mp3 to my hard drive and also use IFTTT to auto copy the mp3 from my feed into dropbox. This ensures my audio is in three different places. Four if you include my time machine backup. Occasionally though I will record using a solid state recorder. Especially if I am off the beaten track, outside areas with a GSM signal, needing longer recording times, looking for high quality stereo audio or just compiling long form audio for a later release. In those instances I can end up with numerous audio files in need of archival and storage. Here is a brief guide as to how I do it:

Hauntologists mine the past for music's future - Boing Boing
Hauntologists mine the past for music's future - Boing Boing
You may argue that pop culture has always drawn heavily on nostalgia, and you’d be right, but things have changed. What was once a dim memory, a wobbly VHS tape, a slice of warped vinyl, or a bootleg DVD or CD trading hands amongst enthusiasts has become a towering digital midden so huge that it threatens to impede our view of the future. The growth of online media channels means that the near-entirety of our cultures’ pasts have been excavated and placed on display for anyone to watch, hear, or read in an instant. Hence, hauntology.
