Peer Into The Past: The mascot of 162 Battery of the 16th Field...
The mascot of 162 Battery of the 16th Field Regiment, Korea 1952 It is believed that this dog was acquired in Japan and went across on a troop ship to Korea. Barry Buchanan remembers he was still there when they shifted their reserve postions in 1954. Gunfire never seemed to worry the dog.
Our goal is to help nonprofits get started with telling their story digitally – through photo and video. Our focus will be mostly on video, but the same concepts can be applied to photos. Keep in mind, pictures still tend to get the most interaction and attention on social networks like Facebook and Twitter. Video continues to grow and is increasingly relevant for nonprofits, but there is a little more that goes into a creating video.

MōVI - This New Camera Stabilizer Could Change Cinematography Forever - YouTube
A new piece of filmmaking gear was just announced that could completely re-invent the complex process of camera stabilization. It's currently being tested and endorsed by Vincent LaForet, who's given us a little taste of what it's capable of. The product is called MōVI, created by Freefly, longtime maker of crazy camera-drone equipment and stabilizers. LaForet is presenting a short film and behind-the-scenes video to illustrate its abilities, which consists of a completely custom-made gimbal and 3-axis gyroscope that digitally stabilizes the camera (a Canon 1DC in this case). It looks to be very light and portable, a far cry from giant metal arms, vests, and weights that almost the entire camera support world is based on.
Streisand effect - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Streisand effect is the phenomenon whereby an attempt to hide or remove a piece of information has the unintended consequence of publicizing the information more widely, usually facilitated by the Internet. The term is a modern expression of the older phenomenon that banning or censoring something often makes that item or information more desirable, and leads to its being actively sought out to a greater extent than it would have otherwise been.
Anatomy of a Mashup: Definitive Daft Punk visualised
In order to explain the layering and interplay that goes into something like a Girl Talk album or The 139 Mix Tape I decided to take my own mashup of Daft Punk's discography – Definitive Daft Punk – and reveal its entire structure: the cutting, layering, levels and equalisation of 23 different songs. By dividing up the sound data for each song and computing its appearance in realtime, the resulting visualisation gives you an understanding of the unique anatomy of this particular mashup. The entire piece is composed from the latest HTML5 and CSS3 technology (canvas, audio, transforms & transitions) so you'll need a newer browser to view it in. I recommend Chrome because it pulls off the best performance with my mangled code. All of the waveform and spectrum visualisation is performed in realtime, so your browser is rendering a music video on the fly! Hopefully it gives you a new insight into the artform of the mashup, otherwise you can just stare at the pretty shapes. Categories
What if you could give a book to everyone on earth? Get an ebook and read it on any device, in any format, forever? Give an ebook to your library, for them to share? Own DRM-free ebooks, legally? Read free ebooks, and know their creators had been fairly paid? At Unglue.it, you can pledge toward creating ebooks that will be legally free, worldwide. These books have already been traditionally published, but they're stuck: legal restrictions keep you from being able to enjoy and share them. Unglue.it gets them unstuck. Authors and publishers decide what amount lets them freely share their books with the world while still making a living. We raise that fee here through crowdfunding: people like you chipping in. When campaigns succeed, the rights holders get paid, and they issue a free electronic edition under a Creative Commons license. What if you could give your favorite book to the world?

A conversation with Rohit Khare about syndication-oriented architecture | Jon Udell
Now Rohit and KnowNow are pitching a new buzzphrase, Syndication-Oriented Architecture, and a new acronym, SynOA. We are admittedly pushing the envelope when it comes to variations on the -OA theme, but I can’t help myself, I like this one for two reasons. First, the idea of syndication needs all the marketing help it can get. We’ve been at this for almost a decade and it hasn’t really caught on in the way it deserves to. Second, it’s just so obviously the right thing on so many levels, one of which happens to be information flow within the enterprise.
Before tossing away old seed or ordering new seeds from your favorite seed catalog you should test the older seeds you have to save you a bit of time and money. Testing older seed germination rates can save you from wasting time, seed starting soil and supplies on seeds that may not sprout. A seed germination test is really simple and can be done by any home gardener with items you already have around the home.
Why you need production quality sound on videos | Learn 4 Life
It doesn’t take much to make the sound on a video much, much better; here’s a little (squashed!) teaser vid of a 5 minute video I’m making for TeachMeet later this month – the original sound is from the Logitech 920 camera – the second section is with the sound from a powered XLR Mic into an iPad. The iPad is a wonderful sound production machine. All you need are the right tools. Judge for yourself here:
Born in 1940, computer scientist Alan Curtis Kay is one of a handful of visionaries most responsible for the concepts which have propelled personal computing forward over the past thirty years — and surely the most quotable one. He’s the man who said that “The best way to predict the future is to invent it” and that “Technology is anything that wasn’t around when you were born” and that “If you don’t fail at least 90 percent of the time, you’re not aiming high enough.” And when I first saw Microsoft‘s Surface tablet last June, a Kay maxim helped me understand it: “People who are really serious about software should make their own hardware.”
Gears of War writer Tom Bissell on video games and storytelling : The New Yorker
For the first time, it seemed to me like video games might hold possibilities for the telling of stories in a newly sophisticated way. It turns out that the evolution of storytelling in video games is substantially more complicated than I imagined.
Dina Kelberman's "ongoing tumblr blog in which batches of images and videos that I cull from the internet are compiled into a long stream-of-consciousness. The batches move seamlessly from one subject to the next based on similarities in form, composition, color, and theme. [... ] I feel that my experience wandering through Google Image Search and YouTube hunting for obscure information and encountering unexpected results is a very common one. My blog serves as a visual representation of this phenomenon. This ability to endlessly drift from one topic to the next is the inherently fascinating quality that makes the internet so amazing."
Make Things Do Stuff aims to mobilise the next generation of digital makers. The world is becoming increasingly digitised and filled with products that change the way we connect and interact with each other. It is more important than ever to help people use this technology creatively and harness the power of the web for their own means. We want to help people to make the shift from consuming digital technologies, to making and building their own. Because when all kinds of different people start hacking, re-mixing and making things with technology, the possibilities get really interesting.
LadioCast automation (AppleScript) « Possibly not spam
Playing music is fun, LadioCast is an awesome tool that lets you broadcast ANY audio from your soundcard to an icecast server. It also lets you mix from multiple sources. Being a simple tool it doesn't grab it's own metadata info or anything fancy like that. There are several common ways to update this info and they're covered other places online. Below I've included my own ladiocast_update script that adds a bit extra to the metadata mix.

SocialTech: Cetis 2013 Keynote - Digital Citizenship: Underpinning Open Education
While the numbers of high quality open learning resources and opportunities online are increasing, we shouldn't take for granted that this will always be the case or underestimate the significant barriers that exist exist in terms of access. There are many, many issues around access. Infrastructure, connectivity, devices, skills, confidence. Today I'm going to focus on digital literacy and in particular, digital citizenship, as critical agendas in terms of supporting access and protecting gains in open education, and enabling participation in society. I'm also going to be talking to you from the future :) Cetis's remit focuses on the post 16, Further & Higher Education sectors, but I'm going to be specifically looking at school level education - young people under 17 year old who we want to support in continuing their engagement with education successfully.
I’ve created Learn about Film because I think everyone can learn filmmaking. You don’t have to be an expert with lots of expensive gear. You can make short videos that people will really want to watch. The basics of making a film are the same, whether you’re a writer creating a fiction film, a student making a factual video for a school or college project, or a small business owner or campaigner making an ad. Great filmmaking isn’t about equipment. It’s about knowing how to use film to tell your story in the clearest, most effective way you can. So this site focuses on the storytelling rather than the gear.
So, a group of Russians went to Egypt and climbed the Great Pyramide. According to their story, they arrived there early while the complex was open, then waited in shadows till the visitor hours are over and the night came down, so later they climbed on the top and made photos.
Deal With It: the art and science of creating GIFs | The Verge
The great GIFs of our time are short, seamless, and salient. Technically speaking, there’s not a lot to master to make top-shelf animations; you’ll need to hone a few skills to nail image fidelity, file size, and framerate, and there are plenty of tools available to help streamline the process. But true masters eventually transcend technique, and you’ll need to fully enter the world of the GIF – to exploit its possibilities by knowing its limits. You’ve got to be the GIF.
How to Get RSS Feeds for Twitter Searches, Lists and Timelines
Twitter is permanently retiring the Twitter API v1.0 sometime later this month and, to the end user, what it means is that all the existing Atom and RSS feeds of Twitter will stop working once the old API is turned off. With API v1.1, Twitter has completely switched from XML to JSON format and the other big change is that all requests to the Twitter API must now be authenticated with OAuth. In simple English, you can no longer subscribe to any of the Twitter streams – be it search results, timelines of users, their favorites or even Twitter Lists – in your RSS Reader.
Nieman Storyboard - A project of the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard
Our attempt to give narrative journalists access to the best teachers and practitioners has extended to the publication of books and transcripts, and a popular annual conference, which ended in 2009. Telling True Stories: A Nonfiction Writers Guide, edited by Kramer and Wendy Call, features more than 90 essays and short pieces adapted from those conferences. The essays share the insights of 52 of the country’s top writers and editors; they take the reader from story idea through publication, and on to writing books and building a career as a narrative writer. You can some of this work in our Essays on Craft section. Along with our featured Notable Narratives, Storyboard points visitors to impressive work being produced today via weekly lists of stories worth reading (or watching, or hearing).
my goal: to help rid the world of ineffective graphs, one exploding, 3D pie chart at a time In school, we learn much about language and math. In language, we are taught how to tell stories. In math, we are taught how to make meaning out of numbers. But it's rare that the two are paired: we don't learn how to make stories out of numbers or how to enable data to speak. This means we often rely on our tools to help us understand best practices. And our tools allow us to easily do some very bad things (e.g. 3D, pie charts, meaningless color).
