Puppet Making with Jim Henson: A Primer | Open Culture
Puppet Making with Jim Henson: A Primer | Open Culture
Give Jim Henson 15 minutes of your time, and the father of the Muppets will teach you how to make your own puppets, using nothing other than household items – socks, potatoes, tacks, tennis balls, rubber bands, wooden spoons, and the rest. This primer originally aired on Iowa Public Television back in 1969, not long before Henson joined a fledgling TV production, Sesame Street, where he helped create the most famous puppets of our generation: Oscar, Ernie, Kermit, Bert, Cookie Monster, Big Bird and the rest. Though recorded 40+ years ago, the advice is simple and timeless. The man knows of what he speaks…

or when your favorite song just isn't long enough. This web app lets you upload a favorite MP3 and will then generate a never-ending and ever changing version of the song. It does what Infinite Gangnam Style did but for any song. It never stops? - That's right. It will play forever. How does it work? - We use the Echo Nest analyzer to break the song into beats. We play the song beat by beat, but at every beat there's a chance that we will jump to a different part of song that happens to sound very similar to the current beat. For beat similarity we look at pitch, timbre, loudness, duration and the position of the beat within a bar. There's a nifty visualization that shows all the possible transitions that can occur at any beat.

Rhizome | GIFABILITY
Rhizome | GIFABILITY
Unlike other GIF types, frame-capture GIFs plainly collect and endlessly repeat a single pop cultural moment from movies, TV shows, sporting events, political occasions, newscasts, cartoons, or even video games. As GIFs are silent, text is used to share dialogue or help shepherd the meaning of a GIF. Frame-grab GIFs are low-quality, incessantly mobile things, they can be awkwardly cropped and their focus is always obviously legible. Somewhat counter to this are what Daniel Rourke has termed art GIFs,[2] which, while also frequently sourced from movies or television, contain higher resolutions and have a self-consciously highbrow pretention, usually focusing on subtler, “artistic” moments.

Digital storytelling: How to tell a story that stands out in the digital age? | The Museum of the Future
Digital storytelling: How to tell a story that stands out in the digital age? | The Museum of the Future
To address the most important issue first: there is no such thing as digital storytelling. There’s only storytelling in the digital age, and frankly speaking this isn’t much different from storytelling in the age of hunters, gatherers, dinosaurs and ICQ. This doesn’t mean it cannot be challenging to tell a story people react upon online. On any given moment, hundreds of stories are unfolding around you, on Facebook, Twitter, and in niche social spaces. Many of them are much more interesting than anything a museum can possibly offer, at least, in the right here right now (because Justin Bieber might have really died this time, and you don’t want to be the last person to retweet that, do you?). So, how do you tell a story in the digital age that stands out, captures people’s attention and gets them to act, engage with your institution?

the Degree Confluence Project
The goal of the project is to visit each of the latitude and longitude integer degree intersections in the world, and to take pictures at each location. The pictures, and stories about the visits, will then be posted here. overview The project is an organized sampling of the world. There is a confluence within 49 miles (79 km) of you if you're on the surface of Earth. We've discounted confluences in the oceans and some near the poles, but there are still 10,156 to be found.

Architecture for Dogs
Architecture for Dogs
Architecture for Dogs, invented by architects and designers, is an extremely sincere collection of architecture and a new medium, which make dogs and their people happy. By looking at the diagrams or pictures or watching the videos, people all over the world can make these themselves. Dogs are people’s partners, living right beside them, but they are also animals that humans, through crossbreeding, have created in multitudes of breeds. Reexamining these close partners with fresh eyes may be a chance to reexamine both human beings themselves and the natural environment. As our first project, we present 13 pieces of architecture. Please take the time to carefully examine the details of these elaborately designed ingenious structures, and because it’s free to download the blueprints, if you find one you like, make it yourself for your dog.

The Whole Internet Has Been a Prelude to This Mashup of LCD Soundsystem and Miles Davis
The Whole Internet Has Been a Prelude to This Mashup of LCD Soundsystem and Miles Davis
Some of the most exceptional contributions to modern culture were admittedly produced while on too little sleep and too much Internet, and this simple-yet-stellar mashup/sync-up of LCD Soundsystem's "New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down" and Miles Davis' Elevator to the Gallows score is no exception. Late one night in London, united by their inability to sleep, Alessandro Grespan and his "ex flatmate and secret lover" Eleonora Rossi came together "in a spontaneous randomly perfect collaboration" to unite these two cosmically-linked pieces of music. "No editing or other tricks, just 2 youtube videos played at the same time," Grespan writes. You can try it yourself here.

11 Weirdly Spelled Words—And How They Got That Way - Mental Floss
Why is English spelling so messed up? We get the same sounds spelled different ways (two, to, too), the same spellings pronounced different ways (chrome, machine, attach), and extra letters all over the place that don’t even do anything (knee, gnu, pneumatic). There aren’t always good reasons for these inconsistencies, but there are reasons. Here’s a brief look at the history of English spelling told through 11 words.

Fool's World Map | Fool's USA Map
Fool's World Map | Fool's USA Map
This is a project visualizing the world map which many fools in the world imagine. If you can see this map comfortably, you are definitely a fool. One day, a Texan asked me a question when I lived in U.S.. The question was "How many hours does it take to go to Japan by car?". (true story) He didn't know where Japan is, and even bofore that, he didn't know that Japan is an island. And then, I thought. "What kind of world map is pictured in his mind?" This was a beginning to think that it might be fun to gather those mixed up recognitions of countries and visualize it as a world map imagined by the fools in the world.

What is Narrative, Anyway? | Poynter.
What is Narrative, Anyway? | Poynter.
The other day, a reporter asked me, ”What is narrative, anyway?” I should have had a ready answer at my fingertips (but it was early in the morning and I hadn’t opened my can of Red Bull). I mumbled something about an attempt to impose order on the chaos of the human condition (as I said, it was early and …). Then it occurred to me that we throw the word “narrative” around pretty freely these days. Yet here was a veteran, sophisticated reporter who was keenly interested in producing this thing she heard everyone talking about, but honestly wasn’t sure what it meant. At that moment, I wished I could have been like Woody Allen in “Annie Hall” when he trots out Marshall McLuhan to demolish a movie line bore. I could have said, “Well, let’s ask…” So I did the next best thing, which was to ask a lot of smart people — reporters, writers, editors, authors, teachers — for their answers.

the short story of my day
the short story of my day
Since having kids I don’t have time to read. It’s gotten so bad that I read in the toilet – even standing up peeing (which mostly works out okay). Novels are impossible. These past two years I’ve started many more than I’ve finished. Inspired by a borrowed book of short stories by Shirley Jackson I hit upon a plan: I’ll read one short story a day, every day, for a year and blog it here. I’ll include the first paragraph of every story I read, and, if I have time, a few thoughts on the story.

Stanley Kubrick's Photographs of New York
Stanley Kubrick's Photographs of New York
His pictures are rife with an air of wonderment. Loser vs victor. Circus freaks, and paper boys. Organized chaos. The poses and situations of the subjects he captured, speak of a New York filled with the eclecticism it has spent decades parading and perfecting. 25 photos were hand selected out of 10,000 negatives for the currently running show at The Museum of the City in New York. What is being displayed is Kubrick’s 1940s New York, a New York we now get to experience as well: a city seen through the lens of a young master.

Day to Night: One Image Captures a Day in New York
Day to Night: One Image Captures a Day in New York
What would it be like to see into the past and future at the same time… at least for one day? If we could see into the day and night with one glance what would it reveal? These incredible captures of New York city answer those questions, allowing us to look into the 4th dimension and giving us an eye into nearly an entire day from one angle. The metropolitan city, its parks, architecture and street life are displayed in one frame, fading from one side to the other. Photographer Stephen Wilkes captured the images from a fixed position, capturing images over up to a 15 hour period and later stitching them together into the seamless whole that you see here. The series, appropriately called Day to Night, tells the story of a city which bustles around the clock: people remain in the images both bright and dark. What does change are the activities presented: Coney Island transforms from a suntanning mecca to a brightly lit carnival, while h
