Cool Hand Luke - A Tribute
Cool Hand Luke - A Tribute
It is the story of an untamable rebel confined to two years of hard labor on a southern chain gang for cutting the heads off of parking meters; a side of the story that we are left to guess about when Luke describes the act as settling an old score. But the real purpose of this lens is not to rehash every detail of this classic film, but to encourage you to see it if you haven't and revisit it if you have. As an artist and a writer I think that one of the single most important steps to growing and getting better is recognizing and appreciating great work. Below you will find some film clips as well as original art from some great artists that were inspired by the movie.

Two Restless Calderas: Santorini and Long Valley | Wired Science | Wired.com
It is very easy to be distracted by Yellowstone as the only caldera in town, but there are plenty of other caldera systems worldwide — many of which have been much more active in geologically recent times (last 10,000 years) than Yellowstone. Two of these “restless calderas” include Santorini in the Aegean Sea off of Greece and Long Valley in eastern California. Both have had massive eruptions — the most famous being the ~1600 B.C. Minoan eruption of Santorini (technically, the island is Santorini and the volcano is Thera) and the Bishop Tuff eruption of Long Valley ~760,000 years ago. They have also both seen eruptions since the “big one” — Santorini as recently as 1950 and Long Valley in ~1350 (as part of the Mono-Inyo Crater chain).

The YouTube Data API allows client applications to retrieve and update YouTube content in the form of Google Data API feeds. Your client application can use the YouTube Data API to fetch video feeds, comments, responses, and playlists, as well as query for videos that match particular criteria. You can also use the API to make authenticated requests to modify this information and to upload new video content to the site.

Use the YouTube API with PHP
The YouTube video sharing site allows Web application developers to access public content through its REST-based developer API. The SimpleXML extension in PHP is ideal for processing the XML feeds generated by this API and using them to build customized PHP applications. This article introduces the YouTube Data API, demonstrates how you can use it to browse user-generated video content; access video metadata, comments and responses; and perform keyword searches.

Nik's Learning Technology Blog: Getting Learning out of the Classroom with Augmented Reality
For a while now I have been expounding the wonders of augmented reality (See: Augmented Reality and Web 3.0) , so I thought it was time at last to give some examples of how we can actually get students using this technology and to show how it can superimpose the Internet onto their physical world. So here are some teaching suggestion which exploit two augmented reality type apps and gives students some reading, listening and speaking practice, as well as a bit of exercise.

The New Aesthetic
The New Aesthetic
For a while now, I’ve been collecting images and things that seem to approach a new aesthetic of the future, which sounds more portentous than I mean. What I mean is that we’ve got frustrated with the NASA extropianism space-future, the failure of jetpacks, and we need to see the technologies we actually have with a new wonder. Consider this a mood-board for unknown products.

Bionic Teaching: Is it a Lie?
Bionic Teaching: Is it a Lie?
So I actually taught a 55 minute class Monday. I’d give myself a C- but I think the underlying concept and the examples are decent and worth sharing. Here’s the idea. Essentially it’s easier and easier to tell convincing lies in a digital environment. I’m stealing from Dan Meyer here. I asked the kids to tell me one thing they knew was true and then one thing they knew was false.  The next request was for a statement that was sort of true or sort of false.

The Ed Techie: What I learnt from a photo a day
I've blogged on this before, after I had done my first year of a photo a day, using Flickr. I stopped that in July 2011, and found that I wasn't taking any photographs. So after some encouragement from Karen Cropper to try blipfoto, I started again in Oct 2011. Today I ran a session at the OU along with Juliette Culver on what I learnt from a photo a day. It was a fun workshop and went down well.

Wikidata aims to create a free knowledge base about the world that can be read and edited by humans and machines alike. It will provide data in all the languages of the Wikimedia projects, and allow for the central access to data in a similar vein as Wikimedia Commons does for multimedia files. Wikidata is proposed as a new Wikimedia hosted and maintained project.

Verite Timeline
Verite Timeline
Beautifully crafted timelines that are easy, and intuitive to use. Timeline is also great for pulling in media from different sources. It has built in support for pulling in Tweets and media from Twitter, YouTube, Flickr, Vimeo, Google Maps and SoundCloud. More media types will be supported in the future. Creating one is as easy as filling in a Google spreadsheet or as detailed as JSON.

Makematics
Makematics
Topics like linear algebra, topology, graph theory, and machine learning are becoming vital prerequisites both to doing daily work in these fields and, more importantly, to inventing, popularizing, and teaching the new creative tools that are rapidly arising. Without them, artists are forced to wait for others to digest this new knowledge before they can work with it. Their creative options shrink to those parts of this research selected by Adobe for inclusion in prepackaged tools. Instead of the themes and concerns of creative work driving the selection of tools from a growing technical cornucopia, artists find themselves turned into passive users of tools that are already curated, contextualized, and circumscribed by others. So, I want to do something about this. I want to figure out a way to teach myself and others these more advanced mathematical and computational concepts with a specific eye towards applying them in creative technology. For example, I want to be able to read SIGG

Computer science for the rest of us; Professors say ‘computational thinking' should be taught as a fundamental skill | | The Bulletin
Reading, writing and — refactoring code? Many professors of computer science say college graduates in every major should understand software fundamentals. They don't argue that everyone needs to be a skilled programmer. Rather, they seek to teach “computational thinking” — the general concepts programming languages employ. In 2006, Jeannette Wing, head of the computer science department at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, wrote a manifesto arguing that basic literacy should be redefined to include understanding of computer processes. “Computational thinking is a fundamental skill for everyone, not just for computer scientists,” she wrote. “To reading, writing and arithmetic, we should add computational thinking to every child's analytical ability.”

This Creepy App Isn’t Just Stalking Women Without Their Knowledge, It’s A Wake-Up Call About Facebook Privacy [Update] | Cult of Mac
Girls Around Me isn’t an app you should use to pick up girls, or guys for that matter. This is an app you should download to teach the people you care about that privacy issues are real, that social networks like Facebook and Foursquare expose you and the ones you love, and that if you do not know exactly how much you are sharing, you are as easily preyed upon as if you were naked. I can think of no better way to get a person to realize that they should understand their Facebook privacy settings then pulling out this app.
