Interactive Dynamics for Visual Analysis - ACM Queue
Interactive Dynamics for Visual Analysis - ACM Queue
The goal of this article is to assist designers, researchers, professional analysts, procurement officers, educators, and students in evaluating and creating visual analysis tools. We present a taxonomy of interactive dynamics that contribute to successful analytic dialogues. The taxonomy consists of 12 task types grouped into three high-level categories, as shown in table 1: (1) data and view specification (visualize, filter, sort, and derive); (2) view manipulation (select, navigate, coordinate, and organize); and (3) analysis process and provenance (record, annotate, share, and guide). These categories incorporate the critical tasks that enable iterative visual analysis, including visualization creation, interactive querying, multiview coordination, history, and collaboration. Validating and evolving this taxonomy is a community project that proceeds through feedback, critique, and refinement.

So do you remember that movie about a little boy who finds an alien and rides a bike across the moon trying to escape federal agents? Well, this is not that movie. If you would like to know what the Iconic Mickey is going on around here, it’s my final design assignment for the week! Yay, I did it! AND I used GIMP again. Look at me in my hot pants. Oh I’m fancy alright.

“Name… That… Single!!!” | Aspiring2b.Me
Does it sound completely redundant as a human being to say I love music? Doesn’t everyone love something they consider music? Iconic sounds shape who we become and how we see our world. This assignment brought two of my favorite things together: Music and Minimalism. Trying to represent a song with no words, just simple shapes and pictures was a challenge. But I had the perfect song idea! See my picture below and guess in the comments if you think you know which song it represents.

RIP: A Remix Manifesto
RIP: A Remix Manifesto
Immerse yourself in the energetic, innovative and potentially illegal world of mash-up media with RiP: A remix manifesto. Let web activist Brett Gaylor and musician Greg Gillis, better known as Girl Talk, serve as your digital tour guides on a probing investigation into how culture builds upon culture in the information age. Biomedical engineer turned live-performance sensation Girl Talk, has received immense commercial and critical success for his mind-blowing sample-based music. Utilizing technical expertise and a ferocious creative streak, Girl Talk repositions popular music to create a wild and edgy dialogue between artists from all genres and eras. But are his practices legal? Do his methods of frenetic appropriation embrace collaboration in its purest sense? Or are they infractions of creative integrity and violations of copyright?

Ghostly Lullaby Dream Story | Aspiring2b.Me
Ghostly Lullaby Dream Story | Aspiring2b.Me
For the audio dream story assignment, we were to create the story of a dream using again only sounds from freesound.org. This dream has a creepy vibe of perhaps the spirit of a mother and child rocking and humming a lullaby. Its slightly abstract, vague, and brief (as many of my dreams are). I did actually get around one of the rules by uploading a sound I created to freesound.org (the sound of me humming the lullaby). So I credit myself for the first track I layered. The second sound was the rocking chair from stevelalonde who recorded an old rocking chair in movement on the wooden floor of an apartment in Montreal. The third track I layered was a very subtle quiet piano song by sonsdebarcelona which I found quite beautiful.

d3.js
d3.js
D3.js is a small, free JavaScript library for manipulating documents based on data. D3 allows you to bind arbitrary data to a Document Object Model (DOM), and then apply data-driven transformations to the document. As a trivial example, you can use D3 to generate a basic HTML table from an array of numbers. Or, use the same data to create an interactive SVG bar chart with smooth transitions and interaction.

The hard part of minimalism is not in the fabrication, obviously. The hard part is figuring out what contains the most information in context yet contains the least information out of context. And if you have seen the movie, then I hope you think the poster is as brilliant as I thought it was when the idea came to me. And if you haven’t seen the movie, you should.

For the last of my 4 stars I decided to put my years of Spanish classes to work. The joke I found didn’t have a title unfortunately, so I just picked out a line from it that I thought would work well. I recorded that myself, downloaded the guitar music track and the laughter. The music track wasn’t long enough to cover the entire joke so I had to copy, paste, and slide it together. Then I amplified the reading and decreased the volume on the music track.
