Amazing Stories of Openness (ETUG Spring Workshop, June 2011)
(June 2, 2011, Nelson BC) While the Open Education movement focuses on institutional issues, a large ocean exists of powerful individual accomplishments simply from tapping into content that is open for sharing and re-use. As colorful as old covers of “Amazing Stories” magazine, this presentation shares moving, personal stories that would not have been previously possible, enabled by open licensed materials and personal networks.

The Canucks Fan Who Drove 1,000 Miles For A Game, Partied With The Owner, Drank With Beautiful Women, Nearly Died, And Got Comped For Game 5 - Deadspin
This is the totally true* story of Danny, a 24-year-old Canucks fan who on the spur of the moment decided to drive from Vancouver to San Jose for Game 4 of the Western Conference Finals, and ended up wandering the streets in a hospital gown with no memory of the preceding nine hours. *Events have been reconstructed to the best of our abilities through the help of Danny's friends, other fans present, the Canucks, and a day-after collection of cell phone photos.

Historical Tweets
Most people think Twitter was “created” in 2006.  These are same people who think Richard Gere created Buddhism in the 1990′s.  Just before Madonna created yoga.  Folks, like the sun, moon, and stars, Twitter has always been.  This site proves it beyond a shadow of a doubt. Books have been ruining history. So many unnecessary words.  Now, with Historical Tweets, historys most amazing men and women can be fully understood, a mere 140 characters at a time.

Toward the Glass Bead Game - a rhetorical invention
Toward the Glass Bead Game - a rhetorical invention
A realization of Hesse's Glass Bead Game is presented. By associating small images ("beads" and "tiles") with ideas described in ordinary prose, a new vocabulary of glyphs is developed; these glyphs are later assembled in special ways, such that their spatial arrangement asserts symbolic relationships between the corresponding ideas. In particular, arrangements take the form bead-tile-bead, signifying subject-predicate-object assertions. Arranging and connecting multiple bead phrases on a two-dimensional grid allows large groups of related assertions to be made in a compact and appealing visual space, and the communication of rich symbolic connectivity less lengthy and cumbersome than it would be with prose. The entire structure, including narrative, bead phrases, and imagery is represented in the technical forms of the Semantic Web; all beads and tiles are labeled with URIs, and bead phrases become reified RDF.

Looking Through the Lens (Northern Voice 2011)
Looking Through the Lens (Northern Voice 2011)
a presentation for Northern Voice 2011, May 14, 2011, Vancouver, B.C. The mechanics and art of photography unveil an intriguing metaphor for thinking about learning and our world view. For a photographer, the operation of cameras-- exploiting apertures, shutter speeds, optics, -- coexist with the artistic skills of pre-visualization, framing, composition. It is no longer a field dominated by pros with expensive gear, we can all make photographic art, damnit. Taking the metaphor farther, creating an engaging learning experience is much more than point and shoot or flipping the settings into automatic mode. Photography is a beautiful example of how you can get better at doing something just by regularly doing (and sharing) your craft. Regular acts of photography, such as the Daily Shoot, are a model of informal learning that works.

The Story Matters
The Story Matters
The specific example I used this last festival was last year’s motorcycle trip to New York.  If you remember, I did this massive 5,500 mile trip to New York and back.  The primary reason to head out there was my 30th high school reunion.  Since it was such an epic trip, I brought my primary photography gear which includes a Nikon D3.  It’s a lot of stuff.  Interestingly enough, not a single compelling image from that trip was shot with that camera.  In fact, 100% of my keepers were shot with my phone, my iPhone.  And, all the images were processed with apps in my phone. The convenience of the phone perched right on my dash board far out-weighed the far superior sensor of my full-framed camera.  In fact, I captured images that simply would’ve been lost if I didn’t have immediate access to a camera.  So, what’s so important about having such an immediate use camera?  It’s great for collecting imagery that will be used in a story about the trip.

The Importance of Personal Projects
The Importance of Personal Projects
What changed my outlook and made my passion for photography stronger than ever? I challenged myself to work on special projects such as a 52 week project, I gave myself some self assignments on weekends such as doing more street photography, limiting myself to one lens, trying new techniques, challenging myself to experimenting in genres that were outside my comfort zone, etc.

5 Reasons Why Shooting With a Rangefinder Will Make You a Better Street Photographer
Recently I have been shooting quite a bit with my rangefinder, and it has truly helped my street photography from both a technical and artistic point of view. Although rangefinders can be expensive, I believe that they can be a great investment. There are many strengths that rangefinders have over many other traditional types of cameras when it comes to street photography. In this blog post I will best outline my thoughts on how shooting with a rangefinder will make you a better street photographer.

Your Camera Wants You To Be Average
Your Camera Wants You To Be Average
I’m going to let you in on a secret but first I need you to put your camera away. You see, cameras are becoming smarter and smarter every year as the ability to pack more and more information and programming into their circuits becomes available thanks to the march of progress. I don’t want your camera catching whiff of this conversation. That’s because the honest truth is your camera wants you to be average. More precisely, your camera wants your pictures to be average. Let me explain with a bit of backstory.

Don’t be an Idiot | Guy Tal Photography Web Journal
Don’t be an Idiot | Guy Tal Photography Web Journal
Almost since the first photographic image was made, artists choosing to work in the medium of photography faced an uphill battle for recognition of the legitimacy of their work and its acceptance as a fine art. Photography had been derided as being the product of machines and chemicals rather than the expressive minds of artists, and for offering no more than simple representations of reality, rather than having the freedom to convey nuanced and abstract concepts. I will spare you the history lesson and evolution of the art through Pictorialism, Group f/64, etc. Just look up the terms for more evidence of the ongoing struggle. Perhaps the strongest articulation of the disconnect can be found in Gore Vidal’s words: “For half a century photography has been the ‘art form’ of the untalented. Obviously some pictures are more satisfactory than others, but where is credit due? To the designer of the camera? To the finger on the button? To the law of averages?”

photographing strangers
Some time ago, I received the following message from a friend: "Okay, this may be way off-base, but what is the etiquette of photographing interesting-looking strangers while traveling?  Do you ask permission first?  What if you don't speak the language? Do you take stealth photos?  Only shoot strangers from behind?" All very valid questions, and unfortunately, as with most questions you ask a lawyer, the answer is "it depends."  And since I've been traveling quite a bit lately (and many more trips are to come in the relatively near future), for this Occasionally Technical Tuesday I thought we'd talk about some issues to take into consideration when taking photographs of total strangers (however, when it comes to taking photographs of your own uncooperative companions, you're on your own).

20+ Brilliant and Advanced jQuery Effects
Every new technology has its own comparisons with its competitors as jQuery is closely compared with Flash. Flash was the technology used by many web designers a while ago, but now its the turn of jQuery to add the special effects or interactivity to a website. jQuery makes it easier to create sophisticated custom effects and animations compared to Flash and also jQuery takes a lead when it comes to SEO. Some of the stunning effects which jQuery can produce are sliding in different directions, adding ease to animations, effects like flip-in, sorting, zoom-in effects in photos, panning, creating a Photo shoot effect, slider effects and many more.So we present you some of the links that shows you the demos of various brilliant and advanced effects and it gives you a clear picture in itself without the help of any tutor.
