Photography can be both a noun and a verb. It is both the act of, and the product of, capturing images through photographic processes. When someone asks “what do you recommend to help me get better at photography” – I think they are meaning photography-as-noun. They want their photographs to look better. They want to take better pictures. But, what they really mean, whether they realize it or not, is how to improve photography-as-verb. How to “get better” at taking pictures. How to be a better photographer.

If We Ditch The LMS, What Else Could We Re-think?
If We Ditch The LMS, What Else Could We Re-think?
So if we take the Social Learning Environment Manifesto seriously and re-imagine the LMS as a personal teaching environment (PTE), what other parts of education could we re-think along with that?  There are two ideas that I want to look at – one is how to re-think the entire structure of colleges if we were to use PTEs instead of LMSs, and the other is what if the PTE was actually a browser instead of a website.  I’ll get to re-thinking college structure in the next post (because I am still chewing on that one), but first I want to ponder using a browser instead of a website. In the past, I have thought about using the browser as an LMS, but it seems like the whole Opera Unite concept never really took off.  But I was looking at the new Rockmelt browser and the thought kind of hit me – this could be the new online classroom – open, outside of the walled garden, and flexible.

The OAuthpocalypse and Keynote Tweet
The OAuthpocalypse and Keynote Tweet
Keynote Tweet is a simple AppleScript utility that allows you to send tweets from your Keynote presentations. Keynote Tweet uses the curl command-line utility to submit tweets to the Twitter API. Unfortunately there is no easy way to implement OAuth using the curl command-line. It also appears that it would be very difficult to implement OAuth directly in AppleScript. One solution to making Keynote Tweet work again is to replace curl with twurl. twurl is a curl-like command-line utility for the Twitter API written in Ruby. twurl’s installation and OAuth setup is simple. The twurl syntax is not identical to curl’s, but it is simple to swap twurl out for curl in the Keynote Tweet AppleScript. Simply change the call to curl:

Spring Revival: Alternate Reality Game Breathes New Life into Old Course by Ben Betts : Learning Solutions Magazine
Spring Revival: Alternate Reality Game Breathes New Life into Old Course by Ben Betts : Learning Solutions Magazine
Nick Barclay was a man on a mission: re-define the opening week of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Management at Warwick Business School. The Diploma is an entry-level business management qualification targeting the Exec Ed market. Designed to give a solid grounding in business for graduates without a business degree, the course already had a successful seven-year track record, but it was time for an update. Nick stalked the corridors of the business school, keen for new ideas. He was no stranger to experiential learning and when he’d gone looking for ideas for the diploma, one key message had come back to him: gamification.

Formatting ebooks - EPUB Straight to the Point
Formatting ebooks - EPUB Straight to the Point
EPUB Straight to the Point explains how to create ebooks in the standard EPUB format, starting with tools you may already be familiar with: Microsoft Word and Adobe InDesign, and how to use either one (not to mention the documents you may already have in those formats) to generate the files necessary for creating an EPUB format ebook. But because neither of those programs creates a fully valid EPUB file, the book also takes a closer look at the inner workings of an EPUB format file, and shows you how to use a text editor to complete the EPUB file, including the creation of a cover and navigational table of contents.

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds. - Ralph Waldo Emerson
n case you’re wondering, in Emerson’s time and today’s, the term “hobgoblin” symbolizes the unknown. A hobgoblin is a mischievous or malicious little critter, most commonly from fairy tales. The significant term in this quote is in the “foolish consistency.” Emerson, above all, advocated self awareness and independent thought, sometimes challenging that authority should not be accepted unless validated by a brutally honest inner truth.

Marshall McLuhan
Marshall McLuhan
To students of Marshall McLuhan who have experienced the frustration of scribbling illegible notes in the narrow margins of a paperback, the rationale for a Hypertext Field Guide to Understanding Media will be obvious. It is one of those works that cries out for commentary, prompting a return to the oral tradition of manuscript culture; and there is not a more flexible medium for entering marginal notes and the simulation of manuscript culture than an HTML document.

The Director's Blog: Olin Library's Mobile Ready Website
Over the last few weeks, Paul Gindlesperger has been building a mobile ready website for us. As readers of this blog know, I think smartphones will play a significant role in the future of access to the digital library, so I am delighted that we can now provide access to our services and information resources for our users from these devices. The big issue for us now is to make sure the vendors we work with are also making their resources "mobile-friendly." This is a work in progress. Frankly, most of the databases and publishers have not made enough progress on this yet as you will see if you try and do any searching and reading of documents on the site. While I am at ALA Midwinter in San Diego, I will talk to vendors about this issue. In the meantime, in a continuing series of posts from guest authors I have asked Paul to describe the process of developing the site and some of the issues he faced

Considerations for Creative Commons Licensing of Open Educational Resources: The Value of Copyleft
Considerations for Creative Commons Licensing of Open Educational Resources: The Value of Copyleft
Creative Commons licenses are important instruments for sharing open educational resources. This article will focus on the debate over two of the most widely used and contentious licenses: Attribution and Attribution-ShareAlike. Drawing on lessons from the open source community, rhetorical theory, and my own perspectives as an advocate of copyleft, I offer some insight into the debate over these licenses, with particular emphasis on how Attribution-ShareAlike can help to build a sustainable education commons.

Using learning analytics to understand student behavior and inform faculty development programs |
Using learning analytics to understand student behavior and inform faculty development programs |
With all of this content comes a staggering amount of data about how it is being used; traditionally they data is from web hits, the learning management system and students surveys. Beginning in Autumn quarter of 2010, the College of Nursing instituted a significant upgrade to the ways we are capturing lectures, and as part of that, were able to implement a new piece, analytics. The analytics collects much of the data that we were collecting manually and brings some additional data that will allow us to understand more about our students.

Designing mLearning
Designing mLearning
Mobile devices are here, there, and everywhere. Can we use them to support learning? The answer is a definite “yes”! Mobile provides a new channel for learning -- whether it be formal or informal -- and offers unique properties for just-in-time, just-in-place learning. But it’s not about augmenting learning, it’s about augmenting performance. Because mobile is not about courses, but instead supports a broad definition of learning, including innovation, collaboration, research, design and more, generating new products, services, and problems solved. Whether providing needed tools, augmenting learning, or connecting individuals, mobile is a powerful new tool for supporting performance.

More On Instagram (or why Facebook hasn’t won everything)
More On Instagram (or why Facebook hasn’t won everything)
nstagram’s magic seems to lie a bit deeper.  In talking to friends of mine who are Instagram addicts, one trait seems to be coming up over and over again.  Most of them did not consider themselves serious photographers pre Instagram (by serious photographers, I mean people that would deliberately go out of the way to capture a special shot). Not the case now.  Now my friends are pulling their cars over and putting themselves in otherwise dangerous situations to capture the perfect shot. Somehow, it seems that Instagram is able to bring out the photographer in people that had never considered themselves photographers before.

3Gear Systems "Gestural user interfaces for the rest of us"
3Gear Systems was founded in 2010 by Robert Wang while he was a graduate student at MIT. Robert's thesis research explored novel computer interfaces based on 3-D motion capture. Inspired by early work in virtual reality, Robert sought to bring 3-D gestural interfaces to the masses. Thus 3Gear Systems was born. 3Gear's mission is to develop application specific gestural interfaces that are competitive with the mouse and keyboard in usability. Our experience with computer vision technology allows us to deliver a comfortable and enjoyable user experience, avoiding obstructive sensors or bulky gloves typically used in motion capture. Our focus is on empowering users by enabling them to transfer the gestures they already know from the physical world to explore and manipulate a virtual world.
