Enabling a Participatory Culture using Creative Commons Licenses | Beth’s Blog
I invited Gautam John who works with Pratham Books to write a guest post about their social publishing strategy where he briefly touched upon their  use of Creative Commons licenses.  In this post, shares more about how his organization uses Creative Commons licenses and why he thinks it is important for your organization to consider it too.

Stanford Vis Group | Narrative Visualization: Telling Stories with Data
Data visualization is regularly promoted for its ability to reveal stories within data, yet these "data stories" differ in important ways from traditional forms of storytelling. Storytellers, especially online journalists, have increasingly been integrating visualizations into their narratives, in some cases allowing the visualization to function in place of a written story. In this paper, we systematically review the design space of this emerging class of visualizations. Drawing on case studies from news media to visualization research, we identify distinct genres of narrative visualization. We characterize these design differences, together with interactivity and messaging, in terms of the balance between the narrative flow intended by the author (imposed by graphical elements and the interface) and story discovery on the part of the reader (often through interactive exploration). Our framework suggests design strategies for narrative visualization, including promising under-explore

Achieve Results with E-Learning Analytics
We all seek the ROI — return on investment — when it comes to e-learning, yet we often find it a challenge to identify and, more importantly, explain the metrics behind this return on investment. Can we create metrics to validate the impact of e-learning to our company's bottom line? Especially with our LMS? In a simple word: Yes. Understanding Learning Analytics, a ground breaking new report from Brandon Hall Research authored by Gary Woodill, Ed.D., Brandon Hall Senior Analyst, identifies and explains the processes, methods, and statistics behind creating such metrics.

The Rise of Collaborative Consumption « emergent by design
The Rise of Collaborative Consumption « emergent by design
The general theme of the book is that we’re shifting away from a society of hyper-consumption and equating personal self-worth with amount of material good accumulated, and instead to a world where our ability to access and exchange resources, develop a reputation, and build community and social capital takes precedence in how we choose to express who we are and what we choose to define us. The authors give hundreds of examples of how people are finding new ways to share and exchange value – what they call “collaborative consumption” – using social lending platforms (Zopa, LendingClub, Prosper), open barter networks (ITEX, Bartercard), peer-to-peer coworking and currencies (Hub Culture), reuse networks (Freecycle), car sharing (ZipCar, GoGet), bike sharing (BIXI), swap trading (SwapTree), and peer to peer rentals for plots of land (Landshare, a room for the night (Airbnb), or any other item you could imagine (Zilok).

News: The New Diagnostics - Inside Higher Ed
About a week into any class at Rio Salado College, officials can make a pretty good guess as to which students will succeed and which ones will not. The Arizona community college, where more than half of the 64,000 students pursue their degrees online, has devised a system of predictive modeling that officials believe can forecast, with 70 percent accuracy, how likely it is that a student will achieve a “C” grade or higher (the threshold for transferable credits) in a given course. The tool -- one of several of its kind -- is intended to help instructors to identify at-risk students early enough that they can intervene.

UIUC University LibraryGaming Initiative
The UIUC Gaming collection was created to support a wide variety of campus interdisciplinary programs, scholarly research, and student needs involving video games. The collection supports disciplines such as psychology, speech communications, computer science, information science, literature, and others which are investigating the technology, game world structure, narratives, and social interactions generated involved in video games. The collection also supports the needs of students interested in gaming for class projects and related activities, including many registered student organizations dedicated specifically to gaming. The collection goals include creating a primary source archive of vintage and contemporary games....

Welcome to the HardPlay website! This site focuses on Chris & Jerremie's research into digital game-based learning and serious games. Basically, can we modify Half-Life 2, make an engaging and immersive experience with a good narrative, and have players learn some information skills in the process? We're still getting everything organized, like grants ($$$), but decided to put our progress into the public space anyway.

Data Analytics on our Open Access e-Book | George Veletsianos
Last August, I announced the publication of Emerging Technologies in Distance Education, a book I edited for AU Press that was published concurrently in print (for purchase) and in e-book format (as a free download). I am very excited (and surprised) to announce that Athabasca University Press is gearing up for a re-print! First of all, thank you to all of you who bought a copy, thus providing support to AU Press to continue publishing free versions of their books online. I am surprised because I haven’t paid any attention to the printed version of the book. I’m also surprised by how quickly this happened (3 months – this could also mean that only a small number of books was printed). Either way, my interest on the printed version stops at the printed book’s ability to finance the free dissemination of the electronic version. I am more interested on the book’s reach and impact and a snapshot of these factors is provided below:

Facebook, Twitter and The Two Branches of Social Media
Facebook, Twitter and The Two Branches of Social Media
People have used the terms “social media” and “social network” almost interchangeably over the years. It’s inaccurate to say that they’re the same thing, though. In fact, I argue that social networking is a branch of social media, and can itself be further broken down into two distinct branches — the social network and the information network. It’s with this distinction that I attempt to explain the relationship between Facebook and Twitter, and why I believe they are not destined for a clash of the titans. Instead, they represent two different sides of the same coin.

Handheld computers are everywhere. From mobile phones to handheld games, it's a very familiar sight to see people of all ages gazing into screens that they can hold. Schools are discovering that handhelds like iPod touch and iPad make great learning tools. In fact, handhelds can play a big part in project based learning. Not only do projects motivate students because they use exciting handheld technology, but they also lend themselves to student voice and choice. Watch or read below to be inspired to bring project based learning into your classroom, learn strategies for creating effective driving questions, and see how an iOS handheld can play a role in the the planning, research/investigation, and presentation of projects.

How schools are putting the iPad to work | Business Center | Macworld
Universities and schools around the nation—and even the world—are distributing iPads to students and faculty to start the new school year. Some are using the device to lure talented freshmen; others hope faculty and students will merely experiment with the tablet as a learning tool. But a few educators are betting the iPad will herald a revolution in the classroom, once-and-for-all displacing musty textbooks in favor of a mobile multimedia device that can engage students in new and innovative ways. Here are some examples of how educators are putting the iPad to work this year:
