Software Studies is a new research field for intellectual inquiry that is now just beginning to emerge. The very first book that has this term in its title was published by The MIT Press in June 2008 (Matthew Fuller, ed., Software Studies: A Lexicon). In August 2008 The MIT Press approved Software Studies book series, with Matthew Fuller, Noah Wardrip-Fruin and Lev Manovich as editors. The Software Studies Initiative was founded to help the development of this field
MONK is a digital environment designed to help humanities scholars discover and analyze patterns in the texts they study (see the table at the bottom of this page for detailed information on what is in the MONK datastore, and terms of availability). The MONK project has been generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, from 2007-2009, and InCommon integration has been supported in 2009 by the CIC Library Directors. All code produced by the project is open source. MONK has a publicly available instance with texts contributed by Indiana University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia, and Martin Mueller at Northwestern University:
nteractive graphics that engage a mass audience. Realtime displays of social media streams. Visualizations that let experts find hidden patterns. Let your data do the talking.

Because I recently left a job at one of the most prominent publications in the world, people often ask me about my opinions on the cavalcade of publications rushing to the iPad — those apps designed and developed by newspapers and magazines principally to deliver their print content — and the chances I see for their success. So here it is
Future of Location Based Augmented Reality Story Games | PERSONALIZE MEDIA
I am spending most of my time at the moment developing and conceiving AR Games for clients and my own company MUVEDesign. Also in my lecturing/consultancy roles across transmedia and multi platform in Sydney such as at the Australian Film TV and Radio school earlier in the year and at the moment at MetroScreen, I would say that more than half the projects, being collaboratively created as part of curriculum, have a strong, story based Augmented Reality component. I posted last year on these emerging AR entertainment services but there are still not that many ‘story rich’ examples created for market. So is there a future for these new forms? A hybrid combination of story, social location gaming all delivered on the latest camera based smart phones? Read on for some case studies and a couple of my own examples.

Urban Games, Storytelling with Augmented Reality, The Big ARNY, and “Inside AR:” Talking with Thomas Alt, Metaio | UgoTrade
Today Metaio is holding Inside AR in Munich, Germany. Metaio (the picture above shows Metaio co-founders Thomas Alt and Peter Meier), is behind some of the best known commercial and industrial AR experiences of recent years. But as important as the many AR projects they have executed are the AR tools that Metaio has made available to developers. Metaio’s AR products and tools have played an important role in bringing AR to a wider public, and given many developers the opportunity to explore AR. Inside AR is a great opportunity to see what these AR pioneers will be up to in the coming months. I could not make it to Munich this year. But, fortunately, I had the opportunity to talk with Thomas Alt, recently. In this conversation – see below, I got a chance to discuss what was going on inside AR with Metaio.

To examine how every story fits together, News Dots visualizes the most recent topics in the news as a giant social network. Subjects—represented by the circles below—are connected to one another if they appear together in at least two stories, and the size of the dot is proportional to the total number of times the subject is mentioned.

Mobile Learning Institute at the Smithsonian | New Learning Institute
The Pearson Foundation has provided a three-year gift to the Smithsonian to develop, host, and support innovative education programs for teens and teachers. Called The Mobile Learning Institute at the Smithsonian, youth programs aim to bring greater engagement with world-class museum collections and expertise by blending them with digital media applications and practices with which young people are already familiar. Using mobile phones with data plans, a social network, and game structures like scavenger hunts and other quests, students frame their experiences of museum objects by making their own connections among them.
