Social Networks in Action - Learning Networks @ UOW
SNAPP is a software tool that allows users to visualize the network of interactions resulting from discussion forum posts and replies. The network visualisations of forum interactions provide an opportunity for teachers to rapidly identify patterns of user behaviour – at any stage of course progression. SNAPP has been developed to extract all user interactions from various commercial and open source learning management systems (LMS) such as BlackBoard (including the former WebCT), and Moodle. SNAPP is compatible for both Mac and PC users and operates in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Safari.

Guerilla Narratives
Guerilla Narratives
This practical workshop will introduce participants to a range of ideas for using personal technologies to enhance the teaching and learning experience through student-generated content production and geo-location services. Participants will be introduced to new narratives using the mobile phone as a tool for data recording, media production and content sharing, and emerging web services as means of aggregating content from multiple platforms. Taking a ‘guerilla narrative’ approach to rapid learning design, participants will then work in groups to produce learning activities which take advantage of the devices in students’ pockets. Each group will produce 3 'snapshot' ideas - audio, image and video - for using mobile technologies in the classroom. Using their own mobile phones participants will record their snapshots/learning activities, producing media artefacts which can then be uploaded and shared with the wider community via the session wiki.

Tablet computers: what's here, and what's coming - CSMonitor.com
This is an updated list of all the tablets being talked about right now, broken down by their likelihood of actually making it to consumers' hands. The four categories are "It's Here" for tablets that have hit the market or have an impending release date; "It's Coming" for tablets that have some kind of projected release date; "It's Likely" for tablets that manufacturers have talked about releasing but aren't completely official yet; and "It's Cancelled" for tablets that were previously expected but are no longer in development.

Introducing The Atlantic Tech Canon - Alexis Madrigal - Technology - The Atlantic
Nearly every topic has a canon, a set of classics that you need to know. These works are recognized as key touchpoints of analysis and understanding. Technology, though, seems to resist that sort of thing. We think of it as something that is changing too fast for anything to remain relevant for long.

Official Google Blog: Google Instant, behind the scenes
Yesterday we introduced Google Instant, a change to make search fast and interactive by showing you results instantly as you type. With Instant we’ve turned search from a static HTML page into an AJAX application, just as we did with Google Maps and Gmail. You can learn more about Google Instant in yesterday’s blog post, but we also wanted to share a peek behind the scenes into some of the engineering challenges we faced in design and infrastructure.

Artdaily.org - The First Art Newspaper on the Net
Artdaily is the outcome of 44 years of writing, editing, and in summary, communicating. I ask permission of our readers and visitors for writing in first person. This newspaper is the reason for fighting daily to communicate to those that are in the art world or that enjoy it. We believe, in part, that we have reached this, nevertheless, there is a lot to be done, much more. Our goal will always be unreachable as the internet world always offers new things. And to be up to date, we have to, fortunately, work every day, be alert and with open eyes. If Artdaily was established in 1996, being The First Art newspaper on the Net, it was not our first work in this field.

Open Educational Tools: Affordance and educational games
Open Educational Tools: Affordance and educational games
If affordances are properties of the environment relative to an animal then we can state that we can design affordances in a toy, because they would be properties of the toy relative to a learner. But if affordances are relations then we can no longer say that we can design affordances in a toy directly. We can only say that we design features of a toy that may afford learning in individuals with particular abilities. At the same time I believe that we can also say that we can teach individuals to develop particular abilities to exploit the features in an educational toy that affords learning. For me at least, thinking of affordance as relations will allow me to represent it as links in a network, and the features of the environment would be partition of nodes. Affordances could then be thought of as connections and would be useful in the application of the learning theory Connectivism. Is affordance applicable only to a real life environment and not to a digital environment?

Licenses/NC - Definition of Free Cultural Works
Licenses/NC - Definition of Free Cultural Works
One particular licensing option, however, is a growing problem for the free culture community. It is the allow non-commercial use only (-NC) option. The "non-commercial use only" variants of the Creative Commons licenses are non-free, and can in one way make the situation worse than the traditional copyright model: many people can or will make the licensing choice only once. In a collaborative context, license changes can be difficult or even impossible. It is therefore crucial that the choice is an informed one.

Collaborative Futures
Collaborative Futures
Despite these words, the true nature of collaborative culture as a form of creative expression in the context of digital and network technologies has remained elusive, a buzzword often falling prey to corporate and ideological interests. This book was first created by 6 core collaborators, as an experimental five day Book Sprint in January 2010. Developed under the aegis of transmediale.10, this third publication in the festival's parcours series resulted in the initiation of a new vocabulary on the forms, media and goals of collaborative practice.

Mappiness, the happiness mapping app
Mappiness, the happiness mapping app
  • Though everyone's welcome to take part, mappiness was originally intended for the UK only. Because of this, the "Don't beep before" and "Don't beep after" times in the app settings are always UK times, wherever in the world you are. The UK (or 'London') time zone is the same as GMT/UTC from November to March, and GMT/UTC+1 from April to October. Services like Every Time Zone can help you work out your beep times in this time zone. We're particularly interested in how people's happiness is affected by their local environment — air pollution, noise, green spaces, and so on — which the data from mappiness will be absolutely great for investigating For example, if you're in California, set "Don't beep before" to 4pm and "Don't beep after" to 6am in order to be beeped between 8am and 10pm your time. mappiness maps happiness across space in the UK mappiness is a free app for your iPhone It's part of a research project at the London School of Economics

Langwitches Blog » Creating School Information Network Channels
At MJGDS, we have created a Social Network Channel Committee comprised of the Head of School, Director of Marketing & Communication, Librarian, Tech Director & 21st Century Learning and myself. We are working out who is responsible to update what? How can we work as a team? How can we streamline, integrate and minimize having to update on multiple channels by maximizing embedding and feed options. Lately I have been working with iThoughts HD app on my iPad to create flowcharts as I am taking notes of a conversation, lecture or reading a book. It allows me to email the chart as an image or pdf file in addition to emailing a text outline. See below the notes from our first committee meeting.
