LucyPhone.com - Never Wait on Hold Again
Everyone hates waiting on hold for Customer Service. LucyPhone makes it easy to look up Customer Service numbers and place Customer Service calls. Just pick a company to call and give Lucy a number to call you back on. If you can't find the company you are looking for, no worries... you can also have Lucy connect you to any toll-free number. While Lucy waits on hold for you, the app shows you the status of the call. You can also re-join the call if you want to resume your place in the queue!

Losing Libraries
Losing Libraries
Public libraries in the U.S. are in trouble.  A LOT of trouble.  We hope this map will help raise public awareness about the devastating cuts to libraries and assist libraries in similar circumstances counteract cuts. The maps represent various types of cuts, staff layoffs and furloughs, reduced services and hours and more that are happening to public libraries in the U.S. We are attempting to track not only recent cuts, but cuts that go as far back as 2008. If you look at the map by year, you will see that there are more and more markers on the map.

Epub Format Construction Guide - HXA7241 - 2007
Epub Format Construction Guide - HXA7241 - 2007
This is a guide for making IDPF Epub ebooks/publications. It is mostly an annotated example: this document itself in Epub form. Not all details/variations are mentioned, but enough to obviate need of the specifications for normal use. And it is for making entirely conformant publications. Included also is a description of optional extra styling for a particular reader (but still completely conformant). You need an understanding of and ability to make XHTML/CSS and XML documents.

The Importance of Mobile Phones in Education - Articles - Educational Technology - ICT in Education
Teenager Ethan Davids describes how essential his phone is to him. As a student who has experienced some very rowdy and distracting classes, I know that mobile phones can cause huge distractions for not only students, but teachers as well. I am also aware that mobile phones can be a danger to the school environment; however I believe they can still have their benefits in the classroom.

Television Tropes & Idioms
Television Tropes & Idioms
What is this about? This wiki is a catalog of the tricks of the trade for writing fiction. We dip into the cauldron of story, whistle up a hearty spoonful and splosh it in front of you to devour to your heart's content. Tropes are devices and conventions that a writer can reasonably rely on as being present in the audience members' minds and expectations. On the whole, tropes are not clichés. The word clichéd means "stereotyped and trite." In other words, dull and uninteresting. We are not looking for dull and uninteresting entries. We are here to recognize tropes and play with them, not to make fun of them.

Scientometrics 2.0: Toward new metrics of scholarly impact on the social Web
Scientometrics 2.0: Toward new metrics of scholarly impact on the social Web
The growing flood of scholarly literature is exposing the weaknesses of current, citation–based methods of evaluating and filtering articles. A novel and promising approach is to examine the use and citation of articles in a new forum: Web 2.0 services like social bookmarking and microblogging. Metrics based on this data could build a “Scientometics 2.0,” supporting richer and more timely pictures of articles’ impact. This paper develops the most comprehensive list of these services to date, assessing the potential value and availability of data from each. We also suggest the next steps toward building and validating metrics drawn from the social Web.

Bridging Offline/Online: Tweetups | Beth’s Blog
The benefits of hosting a Tweetup include deeper relationships,  lead generation, or more exposure.    It can be a good way to meet your Twitter followers or identify who in your existing audience is using Twitter. Tweet Ups are perfectly suited for performing arts organizations that may have pre-concert Tweet Ups or a museum that is offering a “young professionals event.”     A quick search of museum tweet up show many results including the recent Hubble and Holst, with a private showing of the Hubble 3D IMAX at the Houston Museum of Natural Sciences and a special performance by Houston Symphony musicians.

ARIS Mobile Media Learning Games
ARIS Mobile Media Learning Games
Over the last two years, a group of researchers here at the University of Wisconsin’s Games, Learning and Society research group have been experimenting with making mobile games that teach. Along the way, we have developed an open tool for creating these mobile games. Our goal is now is to provide educators who want to use place based / inquiry / narrative / gaming activities in their curriculum with a tool that can help them build it. The ARIS engine allows game designers to place virtual items, characters and pages in physical space using the iPhone’s GPS or a little barcode that can be placed on a wall or near an object. By giving the players a story and a number of quests, games can be built that involve a mix of physical and virtual activities.

What Identities Are We Using to Sign in Around the Web? [INFOGRAPHIC]
What Identities Are We Using to Sign in Around the Web? [INFOGRAPHIC]
The days of having a separate login and password for each online service we use are behind us. Now, you can log into most sites and services using your social network’s ID. The most popular social identities are Facebook, Google, Yahoo, and Twitter, but are they always being used in the same way? The infographic below, courtesy of social optimization platform Gigya, shows that users trust different identities on different services. For example, users are most likely to log on to entertainment sites via Facebook, but when it comes to news sites, the login of choice is Twitter. Furthermore, the infographic shows what profile data is available to services after users log in using various online identities.
