I’m doing my Masters Degree in Education Media Design and Technology and for class this month we had write and perform an educational song. I was inspired by recently reading “Presentation Zen” by Garr Reynolds and “Slide:ology” by Nancy Duarte and decided to do a song about good PowerPoint slide design. I’m terrible at rapping, but hopefully the message still got through.
Instructor uses GoAnimate for university students (Early Admission Students) and asked them to choose an area in grammar that Chinese speakers often have difficulties with, such as prepositions, vocabulary (commonly misused words), tenses, and so on. First, I gave them a short animated example. Then I asked them to create a story (approx. 3 minutes long) where a grammar error occurs and causes a misunderstanding, and, eventually, the discovery of the grammar rule and a solution to the misunderstanding.

Views: 'Rebundling' Liberal Education - Inside Higher Ed
In 2009 a group of 42 researchers, educators, and entrepreneurs met together at the invitation of Union Square Ventures, a venture capital firm, to discuss how the Web could transform education. A major theme of the daylong discussion, which took place under the theme "Hacking Education," was "unbundling," the process through which online distribution of digital media and information breaks apart and erodes existing industries. At the center of "unbundling" are new technologically-enabled relationships that democratize access to the means of production and collectively create plenty where scarcity once existed.

IT Conversations | O'Reilly Media Gov 2.0 Summit | Clay Shirky
In 2009, Apps For Democracy invited people to freely create applications using raw data generated by the federal government. Within 30 days there were over 40 working applications produced, and Apps For Democracy continues to be a success. However the 2005 L.A. Times wikitorial regarding the War in Iraq ended up at the opposite extreme in less than 48 hours, as debates turned into "flame wars" and indecent disrespect. Clay Shirky discusses the difference between these efforts to engage the public, and briefly unpacks three important points to keep in mind when attempting to harness collaborative participation: The nature of the "Contract with the Users"; the need to accomodate the unpredictability of the users; and the danger of "Heisenberg's press release".

Looking for Whitman: A Grand, Aggregated Experiment « bavatuesdays
The premise of the course is Professor Matt Gold’s brainchild (you can read his overview of the course here), and when he asked me to be a part of the project early on I jumped at the prospect because I firmly believe it’s an important opportunity to illustrate how social media can re-imagine the possibilities for sharing amongst and between students of a similar topic from a wide range of institutions. It in many ways frames the importance of an open and porous ecosystem of sharing not just within a single institution, but across many. It builds upon and amplifies an experiment like UMW Blogs by bringing a number of different institutions into a larger, focused conversation around a particular theme or topic. And while the courses all still run a face-to-face model at their respective universities, a large majority of the work will be happening online and between faculty and students from entirely different campuses.

On Changing One’s Mind about Schooling « Larry Cuban on School Reform and Classroom Practice
Such a three-tier system in the U.S., I concluded, maintains social stability (and inequalities) yet, and this is a mighty large “yet,” good teachers and schools even in the lowest tier of schools can promote positive intellectual, behavioral, and social change in many children and youth . The irony, of course, is that current policymakers from President Obama through local school board presidents and superintendents still mime John Dewey’s words and act as if schools can, indeed, reform society. Knowledge gained from decades of experience as a teacher, administrator, and researcher have made me allergic to utopian rhetoric about the role of schools in society. I have become skeptical of anyone spouting words about schools being in the vanguard of social reform.

iLibrarian » A Quick Guide to the Green Screen Effect
I am getting ready to teach a completely online version of my course on Web 2.0 technology at San Jose State University this summer, and I’ve been thinking about how I can create engaging lectures for my students. So, my latest project has involved learning about how to use the green screen technique, also known as blue screen or chroma key, in my videos. The technique is used to remove a green or blue screen from the background of the filming area and replace it with any static image, motion background, or video clip. It can often be seen in television weather forecasts. And it will allow you to create all sorts of effects.

There are certain categories that everyone seems to fall into on Facebook. We posted a similar cartoon about the 6 Types of Twitter Users this week and sure enough, we found that we fell into at least one of the categories. As far as Facebook goes though, the categories are a bit different. Which type of Facebooker are you? If you’re one of these, you may suck at Facebook.

How Web-Savvy Edupunks Are Transforming American Higher Education | Fast Company
The edupunks are on the march. From VC-funded startups to the ivied walls of Harvard, new experiments and business models are springing up from entrepreneurs, professors, and students alike. Want a class that's structured like a role-playing game? An accredited bachelor's degree for a few thousand dollars? A free, peer-to-peer Wiki university? These all exist today, the overture to a complete educational remix. The architects of education 2.0 predict that traditional universities that cling to the string-quartet model will find themselves on the wrong side of history, alongside newspaper chains and record stores. "If universities can't find the will to innovate and adapt to changes in the world around them," professor David Wiley of Brigham Young University has written, "universities will be irrelevant by 2020."
Wikipedia:WikiProject Murder Madness and Mayhem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The University of British Columbia's class SPAN312 ("Murder, Madness, and Mayhem: Latin American Literature in Translation") contributed to Wikipedia during Spring 2008. Our collective goals were to bring a selection of articles on Latin American literature to featured article status (or as near as possible). By project's end, we had contributed three featured articles and eight good articles. None of these articles was a good article at the outset; two did not even exist.
Edupunk is an approach to teaching and learning practices that result from a do it yourself (DIY) attitude.[1][2] The New York Times defines it as "an approach to teaching that avoids mainstream tools like PowerPoint and Blackboard, and instead aims to bring the rebellious attitude and D.I.Y. ethos of ’70s bands like The Clash to the classroom."[3] Many instructional applications can be described as DIY education or Edupunk.
The Glass Bees « bavatuesdays (the birth of edupunk)
I don’t believe in technology, I believe in people. And that’s why I don’t think our struggle is over the future of technology, it is over the struggle for the future of our culture that is assailed from all corners by the vultures of capital. Corporations are selling us back our ideas, innovations, and visions for an exorbitant price. I want them all back, and I want them now! Enter stage left: EDUPUNK! My next series of posts will be about what I think EDUPUNK is and the necessity for a communal vision of EdTech to fight capital’s will to power at the expense of community. I hope others will join me.

Library Attack » Blog Archive » LibPunk Essay Contest Essay: How I walk the contradictions
I’ve been thinking about the meaning of LibPunk for a while, and trying to determine how I could be both LibPunk and a professional librarian. It’s not to say that it’s not possible, but where do I draw the lines? Well, I think the easiest line is no profanity in professional arenas. It can really hurt the message and gives people an excuse to discount my ideas. This is a tricky one though because the professional arena is sort of shifting all over, but it’s something I’m trying hard to maintain. Really though it’s an attitude and belief that I don’t have to accept the status quo. I’m sensitive to the fact that we can learn from the past (I have studied history), but that doesn’t mean that I have to be tied to it.
The Open Educator as DJ - Towards an Actual Practice of Educational Remix (Scott Leslie)
The metaphor of "Teacher as DJ" isn't new - as Wiley noted (http://opencontent.org/blog/archives/227), ever since the phrase "Rip, Mix, Burn" entered the popular consciousness via Apple's advertising campaign, it began to be applied to how educators might approach digital educational resources. But with the ever increasing number of quality free open educational resources, the advent of 'mashups' as a widespread model of innovation both artistic and commerical, as well as the new breeds of online media tools and alternative interfaces, the "Educator as DJ" is fast moving from high level metaphor to practical art. This presentation will dig deeper into this metaphor and demonstrate live what the actual practice of the open educator as DJ might look like. So get ready to dance!
