Subversive Teaching
Subversive Teaching
Good teaching is subversive because, among other things, it challenges students to think, to question things as they are, to envision and consider possibilities. To be "subversive", we must encourage students to think beyond the conventional wisdom of popular culture.

David Truss :: Pair-a-dimes for Your Thoughts » beg for foregiveness
Sometimes we have to be political, sometimes we have to follow protocol, and sometimes we have no choice but to ask for permission. That said there are times when it really is better to just do it… and beg for forgiveness should the need arise. If you are going to take this approach in your classroom here are two rules and a suggestion. - – - – - Rule 1: You are choosing this path because you believe it is best practice. Rule 2: Your choice of path is safe for students to take. Suggestion: Share your idea with someone you believe will support you in the interest of the rules above.

Learning From The Experts | Life is not a race to be first finished
Learning From The Experts | Life is not a race to be first finished
Our highlight from last week was a Skype conversation with @NZWaikato’s class at Melville Intermediate in Hamilton. Every year at Appleby we take time to learn our mihi (Maori greeting). Drawing, as we do at Appleby School, from a predominately European background I find it difficult to put the learning into a authentic context. I recorded the various test calls we made along the way while Myles beavered away behind the scenes to get the technology to work. After a number of trials we eventually got the connection going, much to the delight of both classes. Myles did well to get the audio going on his antiquated equipment but in the end couldn’t get the video to go. On the strength of the experience he has since gone out and bought a new webcam. The video below shows the progression of the call from our end.

I’m doing a presentation where I’m talking about Feed2JS and I don’t have any examples of libraries using it. I know you all are out there because Feed2JS gets mentioned lots and lots. Can a few of you post urls of library sites where you are using it and let me know what piece of the page is being generated via Feed2JS?

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) and the Academic Technology Advisory Committee (ATAC) invite you to attend our next pecha kucha-style event. Eight short, entertaining presentations will be given by faculty, staff, and students on the topic “Open UMN," followed by Q&A. Presentations will be Web cast, and a recording of the presentations will be published online. "At its core, the notion of open content is to take advantage of the Internet as a global dissemination platform for collective knowledge and wisdom, and to design learning experiences that maximize the use of it" (2010 Horizon Report). Over the past couple of years, discussions about open education, open content, open access, open source and open universities have burgeoned to the point that the 2010 Horizon Report predicts one year or less for time-to-adoption of open content in institutions of higher education.

PechaKucha 20x20
PechaKucha 20x20
PechaKucha Night was devised in Tokyo in February 2003 as an event for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. It has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world, inspiring creatives worldwide. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It's a format that makes presentations concise, and keeps things moving at a rapid pace.

Using PowerPoint to Play Educational Games
Using PowerPoint to Play Educational Games
PowerPoint is a flexible tool which allows for a variety of classroom applications beyond displaying lecture content. Many creative instructors leverage PowerPoint's multimedia and hyperlinking capabilities to create games that they and their students play in class. Games motivate students, hold their attention, and introduce excitement, spontaneity, and fun into a class session. They are particularly useful for review or as a novel way to present course content. Some PowerPoint games are variations of famous television game shows, while others are adaptations of board games, sporting events, or familiar activities. All make use of hyperlinks between slides to simulate the format and play of the game

Later today we’ll publish a lesson about the use of PowerPoint in the classroom, inspired by the much-e-mailed article, “We Have Met the Enemy and He Is PowerPoint.” As we were writing the lesson, we tweeted a question for teachers, “Do you use PowerPoint in the classroom? How?”

I have been working with PowerPoint, the ubiquitous presentation software, as an art medium for a number of years. It started off as a joke (this software is a symbol of corporate salesmanship, or lack thereof) but then the work took on a life of its own as I realized I could create pieces that were moving, despite the limitations of the "medium." I have shown these pieces in galleries and museums and most recently have produced a book with a DVD (Envisioning Emotional Epistemological Information) as means of presenting these curiosities.

Point Counter Point: How to Use (and Avoid Misusing) PowerPoint - The Learning Network Blog - NYTimes.com
Point Counter Point: How to Use (and Avoid Misusing) PowerPoint - The Learning Network Blog - NYTimes.com
Is PowerPoint a valuable tool, or does it stifle critical thinking and innovative presentation of material? How can information be presented visually using PowerPoint without falling into the trap of simplistic bullet-point prose? In this lesson, students examine perspectives on effective and ineffective uses of PowerPoint, then develop a set of rules for effective use of this tool for their class projects and presentations. They then create PowerPoint slides and a prose narrative on the same subject and compare the impact of each on the intended audience.

PowerPoint: Non-linear Presentations
PowerPoint: Non-linear Presentations
What would you do if you had to make a presentation to a group on a rather broad topic and you are not sure exactly what they want to learn? One solution is to make a non-linear PowerPoint presentation. A "non-linear" presentation gives the presenter the option to "jump" over slides to specific groups of slides.

Develop an interactive story with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007
Students can design an interactive story using hyperlinks in Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007. When readers run the slide show, they decide how the story progresses by clicking buttons that link them to different slides. Students can work in small groups (or by themselves if they are older) to create their interactive stories.

Can BP Tweet Its Way To A Better Image? : NPR
Public Relations expert Chris Lehane has been dubbed the "Master of Disaster" for his work for the Clinton White House. He says social media sites provide a great outlet for companies in times of crisis, but they also introduce additional pitfalls to the crisis management game. He says BP has been good about using 21st century technology to spread its messages, but the company lost credibility when those messages didn't stand the test of time. "I think BP did a very good job at identifying the communication outlets that exist in the new digital world," Lehane says. "But I think they have fallen into the age-old, crisis 101, do not do list, which is to rush out information that turns out not to be accurate."

Smithsonian Commons Prototype
Smithsonian Commons Prototype
In July, 2009 we completed a Smithsonian Web and New Media Strategy that describes an updated digital experience, a new learning model that helps people with their "lifelong learning journeys," and the creation of a Smithsonian Commons, a new part of our digital presence dedicated to stimulating learning, creation, and innovation through open access to Smithsonian research, collections and communities. The Smithsonian Commons will, in many ways, be the platform through which we accomplish the Four Grand Challenges articulated in the Smithsonian Institution Strategic Plan. The purpose of this prototype is to help the Smithsonian community understand and discuss the attributes and benefits of the Smithsonian Commons in terms of its impact on real users. The prototype project was conceived as a rapid, research and development process to advance our understanding of the Smithsonian Commons, what its goals and benefits are, how to talk about it, and how to fund and build it.
