As We May Think - The Atlantic (July 1945)
As We May Think - The Atlantic (July 1945)
In this significant article Vannervar Bush holds up an incentive for scientists when the fighting has ceased. He urges that men of science should then turn to the massive task of making more accessible our bewildering store of knowledge. For years inventions have extended man's physical powers rather than the powers of his mind. Trip hammers that multiply the fists, microscopes that sharpen the eye, and engines of destruction and detection are new results, but not the end results, of modern science. Now, says Dr. Bush, instruments are at hand which, if properly developed, will give man access to and command over the inherited knowledge of the ages. The perfection of these pacific instruments should be the first objective of our scientists as they emerge from their war work. Like Emerson's famous address of 1837 on "The American Scholar," this paper by Dr. Bush calls for a new relationship between thinking man and the sum of our knowledge.

About The New Media Reader
About The New Media Reader
The new media field has been developing for more than 50 years. This reader collects the texts, videos, and computer programs—many of them now almost impossible to find—that chronicle the history and form the foundation of this still-emerging field. General introductions by Janet H. Murray (author of Hamlet on the Holodeck) and Lev Manovich (author of The Language of New Media), along with short introductions to each of the selections, place the works in their historical context and explain their significance. The texts are from computer scientists, artists, architects, literary writers, interface designers, cultural critics, and individuals working across disciplines. They were originally published between World War II (when digital computing, cybernetic feedback, and early notions of hypertext and the Internet first appeared) and the emergence of the World Wide Web (when these concepts entered the mainstream of public life).

Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology: The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America
Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology: The Digital Revolution and Schooling in America
In Rethinking Education in the Age of Technology, Allan Collins and Richard Halverson argue that the knowledge revolution has transformed our jobs, our homes, our lives, and therefore must also transform our schools. Much like after the school-reform movement of the industrial revolution, our society is again poised at the edge of radical change. To keep pace with a globalized technological culture, we must rethink how we educate the next generation or America will be left behind. This groundbreaking book offers a vision for the future of American education that goes well beyond the walls of the classroom to include online social networks, distance learning with anytime, anywhere access, digital home schooling models, video-game learning environments, and more.

In movies like Dead Poets Society and Dangerous Minds, one heroic teacher single-handedly transforms an entire school system's dysfunctions. It's a nice storyline perpetuated by Hollywood, but far from reality in most schools. "We need to let go of the idea that heroic individuals will change schools," says Richard DuFour, an education consultant who specializes in creating professional learning communities in schools. "Instead of looking for superheroes, we need to work collectively to help everyone be successful."

Sign Generator Fun, Over 500 Sign Generators
A "sign generator" is an online widget that allows you to change the letters in various photos of signs (road signs, people holding signs, product parodies) to make personalized images/graphics and ecards. Simply choose an image template (below is a huge list of over 500 sign generators) and change the text messages in the pictures (downloadable, printable and e-card sendable). All templates have been pre-laid out so that the new text you embed will be in the proper area (well close enough for all intense and purposes, you can adjust the paragraph right/left/up/down, change fonts/color, even semitransparent text), this make your image creating easier and less time consuming. You can also use your own images with a similar tool on

Where Do We Find the Time? Social Networking Use Up 82%
As a matter of fact, according to Nielsen, we're spending 82% more time on social networking sites than we did just a year earlier. Up from just over three hours a day in 2008, we now spend, on average, about five and a half hours a month on social networking sites, with Facebook taking the lead by far in this category.

There is simply no better solution to broadcast to Ustream, Livestream (formerly Mogulus), etc.. for mac users other than Wirecast. If you're currently using the basic broadcaster from Ustream to broadcast you will literally be absolutely stunned at the quality difference and frame rates. Your show will instantly go from looking like something shot in your basement to something that's professional (at least from the standpoint of frames per second and actual picture quality.... lighting, graphics, transitions and shot angles are still your job).

Media Scholarship in the Liberal Arts
Media Scholarship in the Liberal Arts
This report contains a summary of grant-related activities, case studies of a variety of multimodal assignments, reflections and recommendations from faculty, and a wealth of online resources developed to support media scholarship across the liberal arts curriculum. The collective experiences of faculty, students, instructional technologists, and librarians are synthesized to develop a framework used to analyze critically the value of media-intensive assignments to pedagogy. We explored the impacts on faculty time, student engagement, and institutional resources (personnel and equipment). The relevance of these issues to our peers at other liberal arts colleges, and across higher education in general, is discussed.

Open for Learning: The CMS and the Open Learning Network | in education
Open for Learning: The CMS and the Open Learning Network | in education
The course management system (CMS) reinforces the status quo and hinders substantial teaching and learning innovation in higher education. It does so by imposing artificial time limits on learner access to course content and other learners, privileging the role of the instructor at the expense of the learner, and limiting the power of the network effect in the learning process. The open learning network (OLN)—a hybrid of the CMS and the personal learning environment (PLE)—is proposed as an alternative learning technology environment with the potential to leverage the affordances of the Web to dramatically improve learning.

The Art Of Storytelling
The Art Of Storytelling
The Art of Storytelling website was created by The Delaware Art Museum to allow online visitors to engage with our collections in a unique and creative way. Beyond experiencing our rich variety of art works in the traditional museum setting, this online project - the Art of Storytelling - allows visitors to create their own pictures and stories inspired by works in the museum. These visitor creations can then be shared, both as an email to a friend and published to this site as an entry for all to experience. In addition to creating pictures and writing stories, visitors with microphones enabled on their computers can also record their stories for others to hear. Please explore the site, hear and see what others have created and submit your own story on the Art of Storytelling website.

YouTube: Guide to advanced features - Internet Applications & Software
YouTube: Guide to advanced features - Internet Applications & Software
Video-sharing site YouTube is the perfect service to start with because it's massively popular and incredibly simple to use, but also has a few powerful features that are tucked away. This guide is to help you learn how to use some of these advanced features and to serve as a simple reference page. For the sake of simplicity we're only covering searching, viewing and sharing. We've skipped uploading since it's pretty straightforward and made simple with the service's recently launched multi-file uploader. We're also not including any third-party downloading tools because that is against YouTube's terms of use and is already an official first-party feature on some content.
