Shareable: Cory Doctorow on the Shareable Future of Book Publishing
In this PublishingPoint interview, Cory describes a new shareable book project he's launching in which he serves as author, publisher, distributor and bookseller--and involves dozens of collaborators. "He also shares his thoughts about the ways in which traditional roles in publishing are becoming blurred," says PublishingPoint. "And he touches on strategies that have made the popular on-line community Boing-Boing (where he serves as co-editor) so successful, including how he and his co-editors started Boing-Boing at almost no cost." It's a fascinating overview of state-of-the-art cultural production in the age of sharing:
Shareable tells the story of sharing. We cover the people, places, and projects that are bringing a shareable world to life. And share tools and tips to help you make a shareable world real in your life. In a shareable world, things like car sharing, community gardening, and cohousing bring us together, make life more fun, and free up time and money for the important things in life. When we share, not only is a better life possible, but so is a better world. They show that a new world is emerging where everyone can share, where the more you share the more respect you get, and where life works because everyone is motivated to help each other. We tell this story because a shareable world might be just what we need to enjoy life to the fullest and restore the planet in the process. And it's being built by ordinary people right now. Shareable is your invitation to join the fun of building a new world.

I am one of the 'presenters' at the JISC 09 online conference. I don't actually present, but instead have been asked to create a short video for the session looking at Do educational institutions have a future? Graham Attwell and Rob Howe are the other presenters. We had a chat about the session and I mentioned that I had considered doing an interview with a future version of myself, as a means of exploring the issues.

Something I've done a lot of for Wizard and ToyFare magazine were these mash-up comic strips where I'd take popular genre characters from comics, sci-fi, and draw them in the style of a classic newspaper comic strip. Most of the gags and strip ideas were generated by the editorial staff and I was just hired to illustrate them, but a few were ideas I pitched myself. They were pretty fun and emulating (or at least doing a passable likeness) of the original art styles was a real challenge.

Nathan and his Open Ideals » Orbot: An Anonymous Proxy for Android using Tor
I’d like to make this post without much fanfare. Just looking to share information on the work I’ve been doing with the fantastically radical team over at the Tor Project, as part of my work on the Guardian Project. We have successfully ported the native C Tor app to Android and built an Android application bundle that installs, runs and provides the glue needed to make it useful to end users…. secure, anonymous access to the web via Tor on Android is now a reality.

NSFW: Weezer, plane crashes and everything else that’s worrying about the real-time web
And that’s when the real-time web – for all the attention it’s getting right now – starts to look less like a brave new world, and more like the path to a hideous dystopia. A world where our reaction to any event, no matter how serious, is influenced, not by what’s right, but by how it will play with our micro-audience. An audience that, thanks to Google and Microsoft’s wholehearted support of the real-time web, is about to get even bigger and more tempting.
