David After Dentist | Know Your Meme
On January 30th, 2009, Youtube user booba1234 posted the video David After Dentist. The video stars the user’s son David, just after having oral surgery to remove an extra tooth during the summer of 2008. According to Booba1234, David was very nervous about the surgery and so his father decided to videotape a before-and-after to make him feel better. Following the surgery, young David was high as a kite, and the rest… is history. Within just a week of its posting, David After Dentist racked up over five million views, numerous remixes, and many, many reposts of the original. At the time it was one of the fastest-growing viral videos to date (not adjusted for internet inflation)

Voice has a big advantage over SMS and data transmissions because it channels spoken language directly. People of varying literacy levels are able to use voice technology with keypad and voice navigation, and this means applications can be run in local languages. Users can issue commands and requests and thus communicate more effectively. The downside of using voice comes on the receiving end. Voice data is much harder to process than text or other data. It requires considerable technical effort (or a lot of people power) to parse and separate voice data. Even then, the accuracy isn't perfect. Searching through voice data also remains a near-impossible feat. On top of that, airtime costs tend to run higher with voice than for text message. Yet, even with these challenges, there are several notable projects that leverage the voice capabilities of mobile phones to deliver important information in interesting ways.

Ipseity Personal Branding Wordpress Theme – Human3rror – I Break Stuff.
“Ipseity” means selfhood, or individual identity. I couldn’t think of a better name for the theme (and I wanted something original). It’s powered by Wordpress, it’s super light weight, around 150kb total file size (without background images), only 3 .php files, 1 .css file, and 2 essential .gifs (the arrow keys), and a js folder for the side-scrolling action. It’s also easily styled with H1/H2/H3 tags and you can add images… heck, you could even make it a photo portfolio with style!

Helvetireader is a userscript that pares down Google Reader to what I consider to be the essentials. In particular, it's made for looking at just unread feeds in the expanded view, using Keyboard Shortcuts instead of on-screen buttons. It’s not going to suit how everyone uses Google Reader, so you can take the CSS and personalise to your hearts content!

IEBlog : Preventing Operation Aborted Scenarios
Nearly a year-and-a-half ago, I blogged about an error that can occur on some websites that generate content via script. This content can cause Internet Explorer’s HTML parser to get into an unrecoverable state, which makes it doubly-hard to find and diagnose why this error is happening. When this state occurs, the HTML parser cannot continue, and simply throws up its hands and admits: “Operation aborted!”

The Wired Campus - Google Hands Out Cellphones, Hoping Students Will Build Better Apps - The Chronicle of Higher Education
Google has donated cellphones to 11 colleges and universities for use in introductory computer-science courses this fall, hoping that students will build some interesting applications for the company's cellphone software. Each college has received 20 HTC phones loaded with Google’s Android operating system, which the company says allows students with no programming experience to create applications for sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Storytelling and Web 2.0 Services: A synthesis of old and new ways of learning
Storytelling was for a long period the only way people had to learn from each other’s experiences. Even today there are still some cultures which have a strong storytelling tradition. In this article we present the outcomes and experiences we acquired during the realization of several EU educational projects in which we combined storytelling and Web 2.0 services.

Jules Verne published his novel at the dawn of industrialised globalisation, when the steam engine and the colonial conquests of Europe made it possible for the first time to circumnavigate the planet in relative comfort, and in less than three months. In the 125 years since, the pace of globalisation has accelerated exponentially. This flood of globalisation has carried the economic and environmental crises to almost every corner of the world. Are these crises an inevitable part of human nature? Or is it possible to shape a new connected consciousness to tackle global problems collectively and equitably? Welcome to new the social ecology of the 21st century. Welcome to mobile banking from a New York taxi cab direct to rural Kenya. Welcome to the wild wondrous web of blogs, podcasts, mailing lists and streaming video from camera phones the size of credit cards. All instant and all the time. The world has changed. We have changed.

Petabytes on a budget: How to build cheap cloud storage | Backblaze Blog
At Backblaze, we provide unlimited storage to our customers for only $5 per month, so we had to figure out how to store hundreds of petabytes of customer data in a reliable, scalable way—and keep our costs low. After looking at several overpriced commercial solutions, we decided to build our own custom Backblaze Storage Pods: 67 terabyte 4U servers for $7,867. In this post, we’ll share how to make one of these storage pods, and you’re welcome to use this design. Our hope is that by sharing, others can benefit and, ultimately, refine this concept and send improvements back to us. Evolving and lowering costs is critical to our continuing success at Backblaze.
