Pay attention to augmented reality — NevilleHobson.com
Is augmented reality going to be the Next Big Thing? A lot of people think so, as all the increasing talk is helping the topic rapidly ascend the Technology Trigger in Gartner’s 2009 hype cycle for emerging technologies published last month. I wrote about this topic in July. Now it’s one I keep seeing popping up everywhere.

Lifestreaming: Evolving the Model from Import and Aggregate to Hub and Spokes - The Steve Rubel Lifestream
Lifestreaming started out initially as a model that revolved around importation and aggregation: a place to roll-up all your streams. But that's changing. Now that Facebook acquired Friendfeed and the noise on Twitter is at near cacophonous levels, I am seeing a new model emerge for lifestreaming. This one centers on using a site as your hub, having it syndicate out to all your spokes (where you engage around it) and then bringing some of the conversation back to your site. It also seems to help people focus their content in more useful ways.
IBM Press room - 2009-08-28 IBM Scientists First to Image the “Anatomy” of a Molecule - United States
IBM (NYSE: IBM) scientists have been able to image the “anatomy” -- or chemical structure -- inside a molecule with unprecedented resolution, using a complex technique known as noncontact atomic force microscopy. The results push the exploration of using molecules and atoms at the smallest scale and could greatly impact the field of nanotechnology, which seeks to understand and control some of the smallest objects known to mankind.

Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) is a secure and seamless bridge between a company’s existing IT infrastructure and the AWS cloud. Amazon VPC enables enterprises to connect their existing infrastructure to a set of isolated AWS compute resources via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection, and to extend their existing management capabilities such as security services, firewalls, and intrusion detection systems to include their AWS resources. Amazon VPC integrates today with Amazon EC2, and will integrate with other AWS services in the future. As with all Amazon Web Services, there are no long-term contracts, minimum spend or up-front investments required. With Amazon VPC, you pay only for the resources you use.

2 In 3 IT Managers Have Cloud Funding -- Cloud Computing -- InformationWeek
IT managers disagree on a definition of cloud computing, but they agree that it's either already in their budgets or soon will be. And they expect to share responsibility for cloud computing with application developers and business stakeholders. Those were two of the conclusions that came out of a June survey by Applied Research - West, on enterprise adoption of cloud computing. The survey was sponsored by F5 Networks, a network access and interoperability vendor. The survey found that 66% of 250 IT managers interviewed by telephone said they have dedicated budget funds for the cloud. In addition, 71% said they expect cloud computing budgets to grow over the next two years.
Sony And Google Try To Take On The Kindle With Open Books
Sony is trying to fight this advantage by being more open and thereby attracting other large players into its sphere of influence. It’s biggest ally in this fight is Google, whose M.O. is to attack closed industries with open technologies. Today, Google is making available more than one million public domain books in the open ePub format, which also happens to be the linchpin of Sony’s open strategy. Yesterday, at the unveiling of Sony’s latest electronic book reader at the New York Public Library, the head of its ebook division, Steve Haber, emphasized: “”You want a ubiquitous experience: open, open open.” He repeated the mantra in the way that Steve Ballmer says, “Developers, developers, developers,” except he said it a little softer since he was in a library. As I’ve mentioned, the key to its open strategy is Sony’s commitment to adopt the ePub format, which is an open format for electronic books.

Official Google Blog: More books in more places: public domain EPUB downloads on Google Books
Starting today, you'll be able to download these and over one million public domain books from Google Books in an additional format. We're excited to now offer downloads in EPUB format, a free and open industry standard for electronic books. It's supported by a wide variety of applications, so once you download a book, you'll be able to read it on any device or through any reading application that supports the format. That means that people will be able to access public domain works that we've digitized from libraries around the world in more ways, including some that haven't even been built or imagined yet.
Augmented Traffic Views for Android could be the coolest AR app we’ve seen yet : Boy Genius Report
While the app name isn’t overly creative — Augmented Traffic Views — the application itself is fantastic. Built for the Android platform, Augmented Traffic Views combines a layer of AR above the device’s camera view with live traffic camera images and traffic data. Simply hold the Android handset up and the AR layer displays all available traffic camera points in the direction you’re looking. Tap one to see the most current available image taken by the cam. The app also packs some added features, such as an automated predictive tracking mode that will pop up traffic cam images ahead while you’re driving. Brilliant. Potentially dangerous, but brilliant. For the time being, Toronto is the only city covered by the app and there’s no word on when it might be available to the public. Hit the jump for the video and keep your fingers crossed that the developer decides to bring his work stateside to hit some major US metro areas as well.
